This study applies the WaTEM/SEDEM model, a watershed-scale model based on the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), to enhance sustainable watershed management by identifying high-erosion-risk areas for targeted mitigation at various scales. It focuses on identifying potential errors in using statewide or worldwide land use data layers derived from remote-sensing algorithms and inaccuracies in the spatial distribution of cropland and soil types resulting in misinterpretation of sediment yields. These model limitations emphasize the need for field validation and precise input data, particularly stream data, to improve the reliability of these models. The study examines hydrologic rainfall-runoff processes in Tennessee's 182 km2 Oostanaula catchment using various data sources, including the National Land Cover Database (NLCD), the European Space Agency WorldCover dataset (ESA), and manual field surveys. Three modeling scenarios were evaluated, with and without stream topology corrections, using the WaTEM/SEDEM model. It details the global data used, the methodology of the field survey, the simulation and validation of data, and the critical point identification. Significant discrepancies in long-term sediment transport predictions were found, depending on the land use data source. We report on an experiment performed at the FLASH2 free-electron laser (FEL) aimed at producing warm dense matter via soft x-ray isochoric heating. In the experiment, we focus on study of the ions emitted during the soft x-ray ablation process using time-of-flight electron multipliers and a shifted Maxwell–Boltzmann velocity distribution model. We find that most emitted ions are thermal, but that some impurities chemisorbed on the target surface, such as protons, are accelerated by the electrostatic field created in the plasma by escaped electrons. The morphology of the complex crater structure indicates the presence of several ion groups with varying temperatures. We find that the ion sound velocity is controlled by the ion temperature and show how the ion yield depends on the FEL radiation attenuation length in different materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interaction of an intense laser pulse with a solid target produces large number of fast free electrons. This emission gives rise to two distinct sources of the electromagnetic pulse (EMP): the pulsed return current through the holder of the target and the outflow of electrons into the vacuum. A relation between the characteristics of laser-produced plasma, the target return current and the EMP emission are presented in the case of a massive Au target irradiated with the intensity of up to 3 × 1016 W/cm2. The emission of the EMP was recorded using a 12 cm diameter Moebius loop antennas, and the target return current was measured using a new type of inductive target probe (T-probe). The simultaneous use of the inductive target probe and the Moebius loop antenna represents a new useful way of diagnosing the laser–matter interaction, which was employed to distinguish between laser-generated ion sources driven by low and high contrast laser pulses.

Non-point sources of water pollution caused by agricultural crop production are a serious problem in Czechia, at present. This paper describes a new approach for the mutual delineation and assessment of different pollution sources where the critical points method is used to identify the origin of contamination and the source areas. The critical points, i.e., sites presenting the entry of quick surface and drainage runoff into waters, are classified into three (for surface pollution sources using a WaTEM/SEDEM model) or four (subsurface = drainage sources via the catchment-measures need index) categories, respectively. This enabled us to prioritize the most endangered areas at different scales, ranging from the third-order catchments to very small subcatchments, and to design the appropriate combination of control measures to mitigate surface and drainage water runoff, with these being the main drivers of associated pollution. This methodology was applied to a study conducted in the Czech Republic within the entire Vltava River basin, with a total area of 27,578 km2, and utilized in depth to assess a 543 km2 catchment of the Vlašimská Blanice River. When the effect of the designed surface runoff control measures system had been assessed for sediment transport through outlet profiles of the fourth-order catchments, the average reduction reached 43%. The total reduction in the subsurface transport of nitrogen within the fourth-order catchments was 24%. The approach and results are planned to be projected into river basin management plans for the Vltava River basin. Nevertheless, a thorough reassessment of current legislations and strategies is needed to enable the broader adoption of mitigation measures and sustainable management patterns within agricultural landscapes. In the Czech Republic, the Universal Soil Loss Equation provides the basis for defining the soil protection strategy. Field rainfall simulators were used to define the actual cover-management factor values of the most extensively seeded crops in the Czech Republic. The second purpose was to assess rainfall-runoff ratio for different crops and management to contribute to the debate of water retention effectiveness during approaching climate change. The methodology focused on multi-seasonal measurements to cover the most important phenological phases. The rainfall intensity was 60 mm·h−1 for 30 min and a plot size of 16 m2. More than 380 rainfall simulation experiments provided data. Soil conservation techniques proved to have a significant effect on runoff reduction. Conventionally seeded maize can reduce the runoff ratio to around 50%. However, cover crops combined with reduced tillage or direct seeding can reduce the runoff ratio to 10–20% for 'dry' conditions and to 12–40% for 'saturated' conditions. Conventionally seeded maize on average loses 4.3 Mg·ha−1 per 30 min experiment. However, reduced tillage and direct seeding reduce soil loss to 0.6 and 0.16 Mg·ha−1, respectively. During the interaction of high intense laser pulse with solid target, a large amount of hot electrons is produced and a giant Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) is generated due to the current flowing into the system target–target holder, as well as due to the escaping charged particles in vacuum. EMP production for different target materials is investigated inside and outside the target chamber, using monopole antenna, super wide-band microstrip antenna and Moebius antenna. The EMP consists in a fast transient magnetic field lasting hundreds of nanosecond with frequencies ranging from MHz to tens of GHz. Measurements of magnetic field and return target current in the range of kA were carried out by an inductive target probe (Cikhardt J. et al. Rev. Sci. Instrum. 85 (2014) 103507).

The exposure of a target to a focused laser beam results in the occurrence of a time-varying current between the target itself and the grounded vacuum chamber. This current is composed by three distinct phases, namely the ignition phase, in which the laser pulse drives the electron emission, while electrons coming from the ground through the target holder balance the positive charge generated on the target. The active phase appears at post-pulse times and it is characterized by the presence of peaked structures in the time-resolved current, representing characteristics of the target composition. Lastly, the afterglow phase is determined by a current of electrons flowing from the target to the ground. During the active phase of the target current resulting from polymers ablation with an UV KrF laser, negative target current peaks are observed, whose origin is still unknown. We investigate the dependence of these current structures on the dimensions of the target, using ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene disks of different thickness.

The Czech landscape has undergone various changes over the last 100 years and has been mainly adapted agriculturally for economic purposes. This has resulted, among other things, in reservoirs being clogged with sediment. The Vrchlice Reservoir was built in 1970 to supply drinking water for around 50,000 inhabitants, and increased sedimentation has been detected in the reservoir in recent years. Water erosion and sediment transport were modeled with WaTEM/SEDEM. Sediment volumes were measured in eight ponds across the watershed for calibration purposes. Modeled results from ponds in watersheds covered mostly with arable lands generally corresponded with the measured values. Although in forested watersheds, the measured sediment volumes greatly exceeded modeled sediment yields, indicating high uncertainty in using USLE-based models in non-agricultural watersheds. The modeled scenarios represented pre-Communist, Communist, and post-Communist eras. For these periods WaTEM/SEDEM was used to evaluate three isolated effects: the effects of various crops on arable lands, the effects of farmland fragmentation, and finally the effects of changes in land use. The change in crops proved to be an important factor causing high siltation rate (potential 23% reduction in sediment yield for historical periods), and land fragmentation played the second important role (potential 15% reduction in sediment yield can be reached by land fragmentation). Across all scenarios, the lowest sediment yield and reservoirs siltation rates were obtained from the pre-Communist and Communist crop share under current land use conditions, and current land use with farmland fragmentation implemented, as it was re-constructed for the pre-Communist era. Intense electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) accompany the production of plasma when a high-intensity laser irradiates a solid target. The EMP occurs both during and long after the end of the laser pulse (up to hundreds of nanoseconds) within and outside the interaction chamber, and interferes with nearby electronics, which may lead to the disruption or malfunction of plasma diagnostic devices. This contribution reports a correlation between the frequency spectrum of the EMP and the distortion of Thomson parabola tracks of protons observed at the kJ-class PALS laser facility in Prague. EMP emission was recorded using a simple flat antenna. Ions accelerated from the front side of the target were simultaneously detected by a Thomson parabola ion spectrometer. An understanding of splash erosion is the basis to describe the impact of rain characteristics on soil disturbance. In typical splash cup experiments, splashed soil is collected, filtered, and weighed. As a way to collect additional data, our experiments have been supplemented by a photogrammetric approach. A total of three soils were tested across three sites, one in the Czech Republic and two in Austria, all equipped with rain gauges and disdrometers to measure rainfall parameters. The structure from motion multiview stereo (SfM‐MVS) photogrammetric method was used to measure the raindrops impact on the soil surface. The images were processed using Agisoft PhotoScan, resulting in orthophotos and digital elevation models (DEMs) with a resolution of 0.1 mm/pix. The surface statistics included the mean surface height (whose standard deviation was used as a measure of surface roughness), slope, and other parameters. These parameters were evaluated depending on soil texture and rainfall parameters. The results show a linear correlation between consolidation and splash erosion with a coefficient of determination (R2) of approximately 0.65 for all three soils. When comparing the change in soil volume with rainfall parameters, the best correlation was found with the maximum 30‐minintensity (I30), resulting in R2 values of 0.48 (soil A, silt loam, 26% clay), 0.59 (soil B, silt loam, 18% clay), and 0.68 (soil C, loamy sand, 12% clay). The initial increase in the sample volume for the lowest splashed mass corresponds with the increase in the clay content of each of the soils. Soil A swells the most. Soil B swells less. Soil C does not swell at all and consolidates the most. We derived the relationship between the photogrammetrically measured change in surface height and the splash erosion (measured by weight) by accounting for the effect of the clay content. In the European Union, soil erosion is identified as one of the main environmental threats, addressed with a variety of rules and regulations for soil and water conservation. The by far most often officially used tool to determine soil erosion is the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and its regional adaptions. The aim of this study is to use three different regional USLE-based approaches in three different test catchments in the Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria to determine differences in model results and compare these with the revised USLE-base European soil erosion map. The different regional model adaptations and implementation techniques result in substantial differences in test catchment specific mean erosion (up to 75% difference). Much more pronounced differences were modelled for individual fields. The comparison of the region-specific USLE approaches with the revised USLE-base European erosion map underlines the problems and limitations of harmonization procedures. The EU map limits the range of modelled erosion and overall shows a substantially lower mean erosion compared to all region-specific approaches. In general, the results indicate that even if many EU countries use USLE technology as basis for soil conservation planning, a truly consistent method does not exist, and more efforts are needed to homogenize the different methods without losing the USLE-specific knowledge developed in the different regions over the last decades. Modern non-contact methods for data acquisition are becoming widely used for monitoring soil erosion and for assessing soil degradation after rainfall events. Photogrammetric methods are especially favored to obtain a detailed and precise digital surface model (DSM) of the surveyed area. This paper introduces the algorithm and its Python implementation as a tool for ArcGIS software, which makes efficient automatic calculations of the volume of erosion rills or gullies. The input parameters are a DSM, and the rill edge polygon. The method was tested on an artificially created rill, where the result acquired using presented method was compared to the real volume. The comparison showed that the algorithm may underestimate the volume by 10-15%. In addition, the influence of the position of the rill edge polygon was tested on two DSMs of erosion rills. The resulting volumes of the rills, calculated on the basis of eight different edge polygons, varied by 5%. The algorithm also automates interpolation of the surface prior to erosion, which simplifies its usage in firstly monitored regions. Field observations and consecutive modelling of soil erosion events proved to be essential for understanding and predicting erosion and sediment transport. An experimental approach often utilizes a large variety of rainfall simulators. In this technical note a complex methodology is introduced, using a mobile rainfall simulator developed at the Czech Technical University in Prague. An experimental setup with two watered plots (16 + 1 m2) was established, which enables simultaneous measurements in two scales and monitoring of surface runoff, flow velocity, infiltration, sediment subsurface flow, vegetation cover effect suspended solids and phosphorus transport, surface roughness and surface evolution under rainfall and other variables. The simulator is built on a trailer transportable by car with folding arm carrying four FullJet WSQ nozzles operating independently. The configuration and water pressure 0.7 bar leads to the total watered area 2.4 x 9.6 m. Average drop size (d50) reaches 1.75 mm for 0.7 bar pressure. Christiansen uniformity index CU reaches 85%. This study is focused on the historical evolution of a heavily eroded field with discontinuous grass cover on a major thalweg (ephemeral gully). Tens of parcels originally formed a protective pattern in the study area, and the thalweg was permanently covered with grass. During the period of collectivization, the field structure had been unified into a compact 34 ha parcel, which resulted in the formation of ephemeral gullies after every heavy rainfall event. Historical and recent aerial photographs were used to analyze the erosion occurrences, vegetation degradation connected with the erosion processes, and the land-use pattern. The visual erosion pattern assessment has indicated that in this field, rills and other erosion objects have repeatedly developed in the same locations in different time periods. The soil erosion hazard was also modelled by the new Czech erosion model Atlas EROZE. A comparison between the modelling results and the assessment of real visual data shows that areas at risk can be identified by both these methods. In addition, the land-use pattern was modelled using two different scenarios. The results suggest that soil erosion can be significantly reduced by segmentation of the field into smaller plots. Number of erosive rains, kinetic energy of erosive rains and factor of erosive efficiency of rains according to the USLE methodology were assessed by two methods of erosive rains determination. The first method (VAR1) defined erosive rains by intensity ≥ 0.4 mm· min-1; total ≥ 12.5 mm and the second method (VAR2) by intensity ≥ 6 mm· 15 min-1; total ≥ 12.5 mm. Database contained one minute precipitation data from four automatic stations in the Czech Republic for the period of 2000-2005. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a statistically highly significant difference between the annual number of erosive rains determined by the two methods. The rains simultaneously complying with two following criteria (30 min intensity lower than 15 mm·h−1 and sum of 40 mm) were not generally classified as erosive rains according to VAR2. The number of erosive rains determined by VAR2 most often reached 40 to 50% of VAR1 results. Two-way ANOVA proved highly significant differences between the kinetic energy values for the erosive rains determined by VAR1 a VAR2. According to VAR2 the rains with kinetic energy lower than 3 MJ·ha −1 are generally not considered as erosive rains. The results of kinetic energy of the erosive rains determined by VAR2 most often reached 60 to 70% of VAR1 results. Two-way ANOVA has not proved a statistical difference between annual values of R factor of erosive rains determined by the two methods. According to VAR2 the rains with R factor lower than 5 are in general not included into annual R factor value. The results of annual R factor values of erosive rains determined by VAR2 are about 25% lower than the results of VAR1. Correlation between number of erosive rains, kinetic energy of erosive rains and annual R factor value assessed by both methods showed a statistically significant relationship. The conversion formulas between results of the two methods (VAR1 and VAR2) were derived by linear regression. As conclusion we can state that when using present automatic stations in R factor analyses, we have to be aware of overestimating the erosivities compared to historical data based on ombrograms, where only low temporal resolution data were available. For the Czech Republic to recover from the effects of past mismanagement, it is necessary to determine how its landscape management can be improved holistically by reinforcing the small water cycle. We conducted a scenario analysis across four time periods using SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) to determine the effects of land use, land management, and crop rotation shifts since the 1800s in what is now the Czech Republic. The 1852 and 1954 land-use scenarios behaved the most similarly hydrologically across all four scenarios, likely due to minimal landscape transformation and the fact that these two scenarios occur prior to the widespread incorporation of subsurface tile drainages across the landscape. Additionally, the crop rotation of 1920–1938 reinforces the small water cycle the most, while that of 1950–1989 reinforces the small water cycle the least. Diversified crop rotations should be incentivized to farmers, and increasing the areas of forest, brush, and permanent grassland should be prioritized to further reinforce the small water cycle. It is necessary to foster relationships and open communication between watershed managers, landowners, and scientists to improve the small water cycle and to pave the way for successful future hydrological modeling in the Czech Republic. Recent progress in ultrashort-pulse high-power laser technology has resulted in the production of extremely high light intensities approaching 1020 W/cm². The great non-linear forces generated by the laser pulse during its interaction with plasma can be used to accelerate electrons and ions to energies from hundreds of keV to hundreds of MeV over distances of only microns. This creates the prospect of construction of compact laser-based particle accelerators and their application in material science, medicine, nuclear physics, and inertial confinement fusion. In this paper, the results of our recent studies on fast ion generation in plasma produced by an intense 1-ps laser pulse, performed using the terawatt Nd:glass laser at Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser Microfusion (IPPLM) in Warsaw, are briefly reviewed. The properties of fast proton beams generated from thin foil targets of various structures as well as the heavy ion fluxes emitted from massive high-Z targets are discussed. The possibility of producing picosecond ion beams of ultrahigh ion current densities (> 1010 A/cm² close to the target) is considered. The most important features of fast ion generation in the plasmas produced by ultrashort (1 ps) and long (0.5 ns) laser pulses are also compared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emission of multiply charged ions and soft x-rays from the plasmas produced by laser pulses focused on (111) surface of Fe and Fe-2 mass % Si single crystals is investigated for wavelengths of 1064 and 248 nm and intensities up to ≈1×1010 W/cm2. It is demonstrated that the Si admixture in the Fe plasma results in a higher emission of Feq+ ions (1≤q≤4) but in a markedly lower x-ray emission. The relation of wavelengths and pulse durations of laser beams used is figured in the fluence dependence of the ion emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accelerated soil erosion by water has many offsite impacts on the municipal infrastructure. This paper discusses how to easily detect potential risk points around municipalities by simple spatial analysis using GIS. In the Czech Republic, the WaTEM/SEDEM model is verified and used in large scale studies to assess sediment transports. Instead of computing actual sediment transports in river systems, WaTEM/SEDEM has been innovatively used in high spatial detail to define indices of sediment flux from small contributing areas. Such an approach has allowed for the modeling of sediment fluxes in contributing areas with above 127,484 risk points, covering the entire Czech Republic territory. Risk points are defined as outlets of contributing areas larger than 1 ha, wherein the surface runoff goes into residential areas or vulnerable bodies of water. Sediment flux indices were calibrated by conducting terrain surveys in 4 large watersheds and splitting the risk points into 5 groups defined by the intensity of sediment transport threat. The best sediment flux index resulted from the correlation between the modeled total sediment input in a 100 m buffer zone of the risk point and the field survey data (R2 from 0.57 to 0.91 for the calibration watersheds). Correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) of the modeled indices and their relation to 11 lumped characteristics of the contributing areas were computed (average K-factor; average R-factor; average slope; area of arable land; area of forest; area of grassland; total watershed area; average planar curvature; average profile curvature; specific width; stream power index). The comparison showed that for risk definition the most important is a combination of morphometric characteristics (specific width and stream power index), followed by watershed area, proportion of grassland, soil erodibility, and rain erosivity (described by PC2). The emission of multiply charged Cuq+ ions from a plasma produced by 308 nm excimer laser is analyzed with respect to the distance from the irradiated target. The critical zone, outside which the charge states of ions of the expanding plasma are frozen, was determined to be approximately 20 cm from the target. This value was estimated using a charge-freezing criterion expressed by a distance dependence of the total charge carried by the ions Q∝L-2, which describes the dilution of plasma by its expansion into a vacuum without collisional recombination processes.
