The aim of our analysis was to explore how drug treatments are used in Hungary and how they are compatible with international practice. The inpatient and prescription database of the National Health Insurance Fund Administration of Hungary was used to study the frequency of certain chemotherapy protocols and duration of therapies during a 3-year period (2008–2010). During the study period, 12,326 lung cancer patients received first-line chemotherapy, a third of those (n=3,791) received second-line treatment, and a third of the latter (n=1,174) received third-line treatment. The average treatment duration was between 3 and 4 months. The first-line treatment of non-small-cell lung carcinoma mainly consisted of platinum treatment in combination with third-generation cytotoxic agents. A downward trend of gemcitabine, still the most common combination compound, was observed, in parallel with a significantly increased use of paclitaxel, and as a consequence carboplatin replaced cisplatin. Among the new agents, the use of pemetrexed and bevacizumab increased. Pemetrexed appeared mainly in second-line treatment, while erlotinib appeared also in second-line but mostly in third-line treatments. The first-line treatment of small-cell lung carcinoma consisted of a platinum–etoposide combination, while in the second-line setting topotecan was the most commonly used drug. According to our results, the chemotherapeutic combinations and sequencing are in accordance with international and national recommendations. Further detailed analysis of the available data may help to obtain a more accurate picture of the efficacy of lung cancer treatments as well. We report the discovery of WTS-2 b, a typical hot Jupiter in an unusually close 1.02-day orbit to a K-dwarf star. This is the second planet to be discovered in the infrared light curves of the WFCAM Transit Survey (WTS) and is only one-and-a-half times the separation from its host star at which is would be destroyed by Roche lobe overflow. The predicted remaining lifetime of the planet is just 38 Myrs, assuming a tidal dissipation quality factor of Q'* = 106. The magnitude of Q'* is largely unconstrained by observations, thus WTS-2 b provides a useful calibration point for theories describing how frictional processes within a host star affect the tidal orbital evolution of its companion giant planets. It is expected that stars with large convective envelopes are more efficient at dissipating the orbital energy of the planet, and WTS-2 b provides an observational constraint in the sparsely populated K-dwarf regime. In addition, despite its relatively faint magnitude, the favourable size ratio of the WTS-2 star-planet system and the predicted hot equilibrium temperature of the planet will make it possible to characterise the planet's atmosphere via secondary eclipse measurements using existing ground-based instrumentation.

We present an analysis of the photometric variability of M dwarfs in the WFCAM Transit Survey, selected from spectral types inferred by their WTS and SDSS colours, with periods detected using a Lomb-Scargle Periodogram Analisys. We estimate population membership of these objects from their tangential velocities and photometric parralaxes. Examples of M dwarfs with variable light curve morphologuies are found. We discuss possible causes for this and make use of models of spotted stars in our interpretation of the results.

We report the discovery of WTS1 b, the first extrasolar planet found by the WFCAM Transit Survey. For one of the most promising transiting candidates, high-resolution spectra taken at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) allowed us to estimate the spectroscopic parameters of the host star, a late-F main sequence dwarf (V = 16.13), and to measure its radial velocity variations. The combined analysis of the light curves and spectroscopic data resulted in an orbital period of the companion of 3.35 days, a planetary mass of 4.01 ± 0.35 MJ, and a planetary radius of 1.49 +0.16-0.18 RJ. WTS1 b has one of the largest radius anomalies among the known hot Jupiters in the mass range 3–5 MJ.

The Wide Field Camera Transit Survey is a pioneer program aimed to search for extra-solar planets in the near-infrared. The standard data reduction pipeline of the program uses aperture photometry to construct the light curves. We alternatively apply the difference imaging method for the most complete field in the survey and carry out a quantitative comparison between the photometric precision of both methods. We also report an implementation on the box-fitting detection algorithm, which performs a trapezoid-fit to the folded light curve. Subsequently we apply a set of selection criteria to the light curves to search for transit candidates, incorporating a parameter to characterize the shape of the transit. We carry out a detailed analysis of 11 candidates and provide a classification scheme to separate binary from planet candidates. Furthermore we report the detection of five faint extremely-short period eclipsing binary systems with periods shorter than 0.23 days and one candidate M-dwarf/M-dwarf eclipsing binary.

We summarize the contribution of the HATNet project to extrasolar planet science, highlighting published planets (HAT-P-1b through HAT-P-26b). We also briefly discuss the operations, data analysis, candidate selection and confirmation procedures, and we summarize what HATNet provides to the exoplanet community with each discovery.

The WFCAM Transit Survey (WTS) has been obtaining data on the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope since 2007. The WTS targets about 8,000 M dwarfs over several square degrees of sky, and aims to find low-mass eclipsing binaries and planets, down to the size of the Earth, transiting M dwarf stars with periods up to a few days.

On low-lying soils with a high clay content and poor water conductivity, excess water regularly appears after almost every rainy winter causing soil degradation, which leads to yield failures and/or losses. To outlet the harmful excess surface, waters needs appropriate ameliorative and agrotechnical operations. Among them, scraping represents a suitable intervention into soil structure involving the complete conversion of the micro-topography of the land. The humus content of the soil is a determining factor in terms of soil fertility; therefore, it must be preserved even when drastic tillage operations are carried out on a plot. Our research aimed to assess the effect of scraping on the humus content of the soil on three plots with a heavy textured Vertisol endangered by excess waters. Scraping was used on these plots to create a homogeneous topography and surface with a slight slope to get rid of excess water when it appears. It was established that scraping did not cause humus loss on a plot scale, and it resulted in an evener organic matter distribution, hence a potentially more homogenous yield within the ameliorated plots.

Fully automatic software, developed in-house, segmented arterial and venous pulmonary vessels and quantified volume and tortuosity on inspiratory and expiratory scans. The association between vessel volume normalised to lung volume and tortuosity versus lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 sec [FEV1]), air trapping (residual volume to total lung capacity ratio [RV/TLC]), transfer factor for carbon monoxide (TLCO), disease severity in terms of Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) group D, and mortality were analysed by linear, logistic or Cox proportional hazard regression.Results: Complete data were available from 138 patients (39% female, mean age 65 years). FEV1, RV/TLC and TLCO, all as % predicted, were significantly (p < 0.05 each) associated with expiratory vessel characteristics, predominantly venous volume and arterial tortuosity. Associations with inspiratory vessel characteristics were absent or negligible. The patterns were similar for relationships between GOLD D and mortality with vessel characteristics. Expiratory venous volume was an independent predictor of mortality, in addition to FEV1.Conclusion: By using automated software in patients with COPD, clinically relevant information on pulmonary vasculature can be extracted from expiratory CT scans (although not inspiratory scans); in particular, expiratory pulmonary venous volume predicted mortality.Trial Registration: NCT01245933.Keywords: COPD, computed tomography, pulmonary vasculature, vessel volume, vessel tortuosity, lung function

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to report a monoinstitutional multidisciplinary experience about the use of multiparametric imaging to identify the areas with higher risk of relapse in localized prostate cancer, with the purpose of allowing a biologically planned target dose escalation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective evaluation of patients diagnosed with prostate cancer who received treatments at our Interventional Oncology Center with interstitial interventional radiotherapy from 2014 to 2022. Inclusion criteria were histologically confirmed localized prostate cancer; and National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) risk class unfavorable intermediate or high/very high risk. The diagnostic work-up included multiparametric Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), multiparametric Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), Positron Emission Tomography Computed Tomography (PET-CT) with choline or PSMA (or alternatively bone scan). All patients were assessed and received one treatment with interstitial high-dose-rate interventional radiotherapy (brachytherapy) delivering external beam radiotherapy (46 Gy). All procedures were performed using transrectal ultrasound guidance under general anesthesia and the prescribed doses were 10 Gy to the whole prostate, 12 Gy to the peripheral zone and 15 Gy to the areas at risk. RESULTS: We report the data of 21 patients who were considered for the statistical analysis with a mean age of 62.5 years. The mean PSA nadir was 0.03 ng/ml (range 0-0.09). So far, no biochemical nor radiological recurrences have been recorded in our series. Regarding acute toxicity, the most commonly reported side effects were G1 urinary in 28.5% of patients and G2 urinary in 9.5%; all recorded acute toxicities resolved spontaneously. CONCLUSIONS: We present a real-life experience of biologically planned local dose escalation by interventional radiotherapy (brachytherapy) boost, followed by external beam radiotherapy in patients with intermediate unfavorableor high/very high risk. The local control and the biochemical control rates are proved to be excellent and the toxicity profile tolerable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
