This thesis explores the differences in UI performance between Jetpack Compose, a modern declarative UI toolkit, and traditional XML in the context of UI design for native Android applications. The aim is to provide developers with insights into the potential tradeoffs associated with each approach, particularly in terms of the end user experience. In order to achieve this, a series of benchmark tests were conducted on two prototype applications: one developed with XML and the other with Jetpack Compose, in order to evaluate the UI performance in various scenarios of real-world use cases. The data collected was subsequently analyzed and discussed, in order to evaluate which UI design approach delivers better performance for the end user. The test results indicate that Jetpack Compose and XML excel at different use cases. Jetpack Compose is demonstrated to have faster app startup time and rendering time for navigation and animation, whereas XML delivers smoother and faster rendering time when scrolling through a layout. Notably, Jetpack Compose has also shown an improvement in UI performance since previous works were conducted. Syftet är att förse utvecklare med insikter om de potentiella avvägningar som är förknippade med varje tillvägagångssätt, särskilt när det gäller slutanvändarupplevelsen. För att uppnå detta genomfördes en serie prestandatester på två prototyp applikationer: en utvecklad med XML och den andra med Jetpack Compose, för att utvärdera användargränssnitt-prestandan inom olika scenarier av verkliga användningsfall. Den insamlade datan analyserades och diskuterades sedan för att utvärdera vilken användargränssnitt-design metod som levererar bättre prestanda för slutanvändaren. Testresultaten indikerar att Jetpack Compose samt XML presterar bättre vid olika användningsfall. Jetpack Compose har visat sig ha snabbare applikations starttid och renderingstid för navigering och animering, medan XML ger smidigare och snabbare renderingstid vid skrollning genom en layout. Framför allt har Jetpack Compose dessutom visat en förbättring i användargränssnitt-prestanda sedan tidigare arbeten utfördes.

Außerdem hat sich in den letzten Jahren die Entwicklung von Android-Apps stark gewandelt, insbesondere die UI-Entwicklung hat sich mit der Einführung von Jetpack Compose drastisch verändert. Früher wurden Android-Apps mit der Programmiersprache Java entwickelt und die Benutzeroberfläche wurde mit XML gemacht. Mit der Umstellung auf die Programmiersprache Kotlin und Jetpack Compose wurde eine neue Generation der Android-App-Entwicklung eingeleitet. In Anbetracht dieser Tatsachen, konzentriert sich diese Arbeit auf die Veränderungen, welche die Android-Entwicklung unterzogen ist. Anhand der in dieser Arbeit enthaltenen Informationen wird deutlich, dass die neue Art der Entwicklung von Android Anwendungen in Bezug auf Leistung und Kodierung vorteilhaft ist. Furthermore, in the last couple of years Android app development has undergone a major change, especially UI development has changed drastically with the introduction of Jetpack Compose. Previously, Android apps were developed with the programming language Java and the user interface was created with XML. With the shift to the programming language Kotlin and Jetpack Compose being the user interface toolkit, Android app development started a new generation. Considering those facts, this thesis focuses on the changes Android development has undergone in the previous years and giving an introduction to Jetpack Compose. With the information provided in this thesis, it is clear that the new way to develop Android applications is beneficial in terms of performance and coding. However, research has shown that the former technique should not be ignored since it can help with problem-solving in the development phase because of the amount of material available.

Welches Architekturmuster eignet sich am besten, um möglichst viel Code zwischen Android und iOS unter Verwendung von Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile (KMM) zu teilen? In dieser Arbeit wird eine Architektur für mobile Applikationen vorgestellt, die es Entwicklerinnen und Entwicklern ermöglicht, den Großteil des Codes mittels KMM zu teilen und gleichzeitig eine plattformspezifische Benutzeroberfläche beizubehalten. Dazu wurden die drei Architekturmuster Model View Controller (MVC), Model View ViewModel (MVVM) und Model View Intent (MVI) miteinander verglichen. Der Schwerpunkt des Vergleiches lag dabei auf den Anforderungen für die gemeinsame Nutzung von Code mittels KMM. Der Vergleich hat gezeigt, dass mit MVC nur ein kleiner Teil des Codes gemeinsam genutzt werden kann, da die Kopplung zwischen den Komponenten zu stark ist. Mit MVVM und MVI hingegen ist es möglich, alles bis zur Präsentationsschicht gemeinsam zu nutzen. Im Unterschied zu MVVM verwendet MVI jedoch eine einzige Eigenschaft, um den gesamten Zustand einer Benutzeroberfläche zu beschreiben. Da die Beobachtung von Zuständen in KMM von iOS-Seite aus derzeit einige Behelfslösungen erfordert, wurde MVI als die am besten geeignete Basisarchitektur gewählt.Im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit wird das MVI-Muster für eine Proof-of-Concept Implementierung einer mobilen Android- und iOS-Applikation verwendet. Für die gemeinsame Nutzung von Code kommt KMM zum Einsatz. Der Implementierungsteil konzentriert sich dabei darauf, wie die Präsentationsschicht implementiert werden kann, so dass eine gemeinsame Nutzung ermöglicht wird. Zu diesem Zweck wurden bereits bestehende Ansätze kombiniert und eine verbesserte Methode, um ein ViewModel für iOS zur Verfügung zu stellen, wird präsentiert. Die vorgeschlagene Lösung verwendet eine einzige Kotlin StateFlow-Eigenschaft, um den Zustand der Benutzeroberfläche zu beschreiben. Außerdem wird die Verwendung mit SwiftUI ermöglicht. Which architectural pattern is suited best to share as much code as possible between Android and iOS, using Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile (KMM)? This thesis introduces a mobile app architecture that enables developers to share the majority of code with KMM, while keeping a native User Interface (UI) for both platforms. For this purpose, the three architectural patterns Model View Controller (MVC), Model View ViewModel (MVVM), and Model View Intent (MVI) were compared. The comparison focused on the needs for code sharing with KMM. The results showed that with MVC only a minor part of the code can be shared. This is because the coupling between the components is too strong. With MVVM and MVI, on the other hand, it is possible to share everything up to the presentation layer. However, unlike MVVM, MVI uses a single property to describe the entire state of an UI. Since observing states in KMM from the iOS side currently requires some workarounds, MVI was chosen as the most suitable base architecture.In the second part of this thesis, the MVI pattern is used for the implementation of a proof-of-concept mobile Android and iOS application where KMM is used for code sharing. The implementation part focuses on how the presentation layer can be implemented in order to be shared as well. For this purpose, already existing approaches were combined and an improved method for exposing a ViewModel to iOS is presented. The proposed solution uses a single Kotlin StateFlow property to describe the UI state and also enables usage with SwiftUI. Moreover, the implementation suggests a solution for how navigation can be triggered from the shared code and how the localization of strings can be shared.It showed that with the proposed architecture, over 80% of the iOS and even over 90% of the Android business logic (measured by the number of lines of code) could be shared for the chosen prototype application. Es gibt verschiedene Möglichkeiten, Anwendungen zu entwickeln, wobei sich die native Entwicklung darauf konzentriert, Anwendungen mit einer optimalen Leistung zu entwickeln und die nativen Funktionen und Fähigkeiten des Betriebssystems zu nutzen. Im Gegensatz dazu ermöglicht die hybride Entwicklung den Einsatz einer einzigen Codebasis für mehrere Plattformen. Diese Arbeit vergleicht die native Android-Entwicklung mit Kotlin und Jetpack Compose zu der hybriden Android-Entwicklung unter Verwendung des Apache Cordova-Frameworks. Das Ziel besteht darin, den Anwendungsbereich, die Vor- und Nachteile sowie die Performance dieser beiden Ansätze in der Entwicklung von mobilen Android Anwendungen zu analysieren und zu bewerten. Die Ergebnisse dieser Forschung liefern wertvolle Erkenntnisse und Richtlinien für Entwickler, um den für ihre Android-Anwendungsprojekte geeignetsten Ansatz auszuwählen. Darüber hinaus wurde eine Anwendung mit beiden Ansätzen entwickelt, um die Benutzerfreundlichkeit und die Leistung hinsichtlich Startzeit, Speicherverbrauch, RAM- und CPU-Auslastung zu testen. Dennoch bietet die Verwendung des Apache Cordova-Frameworks eine schnelle und unkomplizierte Möglichkeit, eine mobile App für verschiedene Plattformen zu erstellen und kann somit eine durchaus geeignete Option darstellen. As a result, there is a significant desire to improve the user experience and make it as pleasant as possible, as well as an increasing demand for various applications to meet the evolving needs of smartphone users. There are different ways to develop applications, native development focuses on building applications optimised for performance and take advantage of the native features and capabilities of the operating system. Whereas hybrid development offers developers the use of a single codebase for multiple platforms. This thesis compares native Android development with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose to hybrid Android development using the Apache Cordova framework. The objective is to analyse and evaluate the advantages, disadvantages, the area of application and overall performance of these two approaches in mobile Android application development. The findings of this research provide valuable insights and guidelines for developers in choosing the most suitable approach for their Android application development projects. Moreover, an application with both approaches was developed to test the user-friendliness and the performance in regard to starting time, storage consumption, RAM and CPU exhaustion. Based on the literature research and the comparison of the apps developed utilising both methodologies, it is clear that the native application produces a superior quality final product overall. However, the application delivered utilising the Apache Cordova framework is a quick and easy way to build a mobile app for multiple platforms and may be a viable solution.

Concurrency and distribution have become essential for building modern applications. However, developing and maintaining these apps is not an easy task. Communication errors are a common source of problems: unexpected messages cause runtime errors, and mutual dependencies lead to deadlocks. To address these issues, developers can define communication protocols that detail the structure and order of the transmitted messages, but maintaining protocol fidelity can be complex if carried out manually. Session types formalize this concept by materializing the communication protocol as a type that can be enforced by the language’s type system. In this thesis we present the first embedding of session types in Kotlin: we propose a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) for multiparty ses- sion types that lets developers write safe concurrent applications, with built-in validation and integrating code generation in the language’s framework. Nesta tese apresentamos o primeiro embedding de tipos de sessão em Kotlin: propomos uma Linguagem de Domínio Específica para tipos de sessão com múltiplos participantes que permite aos programadores a escrita de aplicações concorrentes seguras, incorporando validação e integrando a geração de código no framework da linguagem.

La motivació darrere el desenvolupament de l'aplicació és que Magic: The Gathering té una base de jugadors creixent que comença a jugar, i construeixen baralles per a jugar al joc. El joc creix en complexitat, el que converteix les aplicacions de recursos en imprescindibles per a dissenyar baralles amb les que jugar. Aquest projecte consisteix en una anàlisi de mercat, i un disseny i implementació d'una aplicació de construcció de baralles per a Magic: The Gathering. L'aplicació permet als usuaris cercar cartes utilitzant múltiples filtres, i combos de cartes també. Es poden construir baralles, i d'aquesta manera l'usuari té una aplicació tot-en-un que s'ajusta a les seves necessitats. Una aplicació d'Android ha estat desenvolupada en Kotlin i integra llibreries externes, a més d'usar una API externa. Les diferents capes de l'aplicació han estat separades per a facilitar l'expansió del projecte en el futur. The motivation behind the development of this application is that Magic: The Gathering has a growing player base that is starting to play the game, and construct decks to play the game. The game is growing and becoming more complex, which makes resource applications a must-have to design decks to play with. This project consists of a market analysis and a design and implementation of a deck building application for Magic: The Gathering. The application allows users to search for cards with multiple filtering options, and card combos as well. Decks can be built so the user has an all-in-one application that fits their needs. An Android application has been developed using Kotlin and integrating multiple external libraries, as well as using an external API. The different layers of the application have been separated to facilitate the expansion of the project in the future.

Ziel dieser Bachelorarbeit ist es, dem Leser und Leserin die Kompatibilität von Tensorflow Lite, einer Erweiterung von Tensorflow, mit dem Betriebssystem Android zu erläutern und zu analysieren. Die Beispielcodes im Thema werden in Android Studio erklärt und ihre Anwendungsfälle analysiert. Mit der Entwicklung der Technologie verwirklichen die Menschen heute viele ihrer Wünsche durch die Nutzung digitaler Produkte. Der Transport zwischen den Ländern ist kürzer und die Kommunikation ist jetzt sehr einfach. Die Leute bekommen ihre Termine ohne zu lange Wartezeiten und können in kürzerer Zeit auf das gewünschte Produkt zugreifen. Zweifellos spielt künstliche Intelligenz bei deren Realisierung eine sehr wichtige Rolle. Beispielsweise kann in Krankenhäusern, Hotels oder Einkaufszentren eine Produkt- oder Terminabfrage mit einem Programm erfolgen, das das menschliche Gehirn nachahmt. Auch Tensorflow, eine Open-Source-Plattform für maschinelles Lernen, spielt auf diesem Weg eine große Rolle. The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to explain and analyze the compatibility of Tensorflow Lite, an extension of Tensorflow, with the Android operating system to the reader. The sample codes in the theme will be explained in Android Studio and their use cases will be analyzed. With the development of technology, people now realize many of their wishes by using digital products. Transportation between countries is shorter, and communication is now very easy. People get their appointments without waiting too long and can access the product they want in a shorter time. Undoubtedly, artificial intelligence plays a very important role in the realization of these. For example, a product or appointment query can be made in hospitals, hotels or shopping centers with a program that imitates the human brain. Tensorflow, an open-source platform for machine learning, plays a huge role in this path as well. Announced by Google in 2017, this library attracted a lot of attention from the developers. Ease of use and easy to understand are one of the reasons for its popularity. Tensorflow lite, a tool set developed for more efficient operation on mobile devices, embedded systems and IoT devices, appears as an extension to Tensorflow and enables artificial intelligence applications to be integrated into these areas. In this thesis, an Android application will be created to detect the face masks we use due to Covid-19, focusing on object detection, which is one of the use cases of Tensorflow.

A domain-specific language (DSL) is a language developed for and tuned to a specific domain. Two main types of DSLs are distinguished: external DSLs, which require an external development system and execution engine, and internal DSLs, which are embedded in a host language. In this thesis, the language features of the two programming languages Kotlin and Scala are analyzed and compared with respect to the support of internal DSLs. The comparison is performed based on three case studies: The first case study implements a DSL for specifying the behavior of state machines. The second case study shows the implementation of a DSL for combinator parsers. The third case study deals with Exposed, a DSL developed by JetBrains that provides operators for creating SQL statements. For the first two case studies, DSLs in both languages are implemented and compared. In the last case study, the existing DSL in Kotlin is analyzed and a similar DSL is created in Scala. The comparison shows that both languages have powerful but rather different features for creating DSLs. This leads to specific styles of how DSLs are created in the respective languages, and trying to implement a DSL in one language in the same way in the other language often proved difficult or impossible. By the case studies, the thesis works out how the languages features of the two languages can be used for DSL building, shows their limitations, shows how equal problems are solved in the two languages and qualitatively compares the power of the two languages for DSL building. Es werden zwei Haupttypen von DSLs unterschieden: externe DSLs, die ein externes Entwicklungssystem und eine Ausführungsmaschine benötigen, und interne DSLs, die in eine Hostsprache eingebettet sind. In dieser Arbeit werden die Spracheigenschaften der beiden Programmiersprachen Kotlin und Scala im Hinblick auf die Unterstützung von internen DSLs analysiert und verglichen. Der Vergleich wird anhand von drei Fallstudien in beiden Sprachen durchgeführt: In der ersten Fallstudie wird eine DSL zur Spezifikation des Verhaltens von Zustandsautomaten implementiert. Die zweite Fallstudie zeigt die Implementierung einer DSL für Kombinator-Parser. Die dritte Fallstudie befasst sich mit Exposed, einer von JetBrains entwickelten DSL, die Operatoren zur Erstellung von SQL-Anweisungen bereitstellt. Für die ersten beiden Fallstudien werden DSLs in beiden Sprachen implementiert und verglichen. In der letzten Fallstudie wird die bestehende DSL in Kotlin analysiert und eine ähnliche DSL in Scala erstellt. Der Vergleich zeigt, dass beide Sprachen über mächtige, aber sehr unterschiedliche Features zur Erstellung von DSLs verfügen. Dies führt zu spezifischen Stilen, wie DSLs in den jeweiligen Sprachen erstellt werden, und der Versuch, eine DSL in einer Sprache auf die gleiche Weise in der anderen Sprache zu implementieren, erwies sich oft als schwierig oder unmöglich. Anhand von Fallstudien wird erläutert, wie die Sprachfeatures der beiden Sprachen für eine DSL-Erstellung genutzt werden können, es werden ihre Grenzen aufgezeigt, es wird gezeigt, wie dieselben Probleme in den beiden Sprachen gelöst werden können, und es wird ein qualitativer Vergleich der Leistung der beiden Sprachen bei der DSL-Erstellung vorgenommen. As more and more companies use the internet to grow their businesses and sales, it is crucial to have a fast and responsive site that keeps customers on the site. Hence, comparing two web frameworks with respect to response time is vital, as it is a significant part of delivering the page. The comparison will help developers to choose between Express.js and Ktor. Our research shows how the two frameworks, Ktor and Express.js, compare in response times for static and dynamic pages for a set of concurrent users. The comparison will explain how the frameworks’ response times change when having a different number of concurrent users and delivering static vs. dynamic content. An experiment with Locust was conducted to obtain the data needed to show the differences in response time for the two frameworks. Additionally, a literature study was conducted to find the best way to structure the servers, design the tests, and find information on how the frameworks should perform. We found that Express.js has an overall better response time than Ktor. At the same time, it was found that the Object Relational Mapper used with Ktor affected result more than the Object Relational Mapper used with Express.js. Hence, we conclude that Express.js is the better choice, but since both frameworks had low response times, we would say that even Ktor is a valid choice.

Android-Entwicklung ist ein florierender Markt. Immer mehr Menschen nutzen Smartphones und auf diesen eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Anwendungen. Diese Anwendungen brauchen einen Weg Daten zu persistieren. Dazu gibt es in Android unterschiedliche Lösungen, beispielsweise Shared Preferences und online Datenbanken. Die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit stellt zwei dieser Techniken vor, nämlich SQLite mit der Room Bibliothek und die Cloud Firestore Datenbank von Google. Anfänger*innen in der Android-Entwicklung stellen die primäre Zielgruppe der Thesis dar. Zunächst wird eine Einführung in grundlegende Android App Komponenten und Konzepte gegeben. Dabei werden das Model-View-ViewModel Design Muster, Lifecycle von Komponenten, LiveData, asynchrone Programmierung, Coroutine und Flow behandelt. Anschließend wird der Fokus auf Datenbanken gelegt. Hierbei werden nach einer Einführung zu SQL- und NoSQL-Datenbanken sowohl SQLite mit Room als auch Cloud Firestore näher beleuchtet. Abschließend folgt eine Illustration der tatsächlichen Implementierung der zwei Datenbank anhand von ClassroomDuel, einem Projekt der Autorin. Zusammenfassend lässt sich feststellen, dass bei der Auswahl der Datenbank der konkrete Anwendungsfall zu berücksichtigen ist. Wird eine Anwendung nur offline genutzt und ist die Datenmenge gering, so ist SQLite mit Room ausreichend. Falls die Daten jedoch geteilt werden sollen und in Echtzeit verfügbar sein müssen, ist Cloud Firestore eine bessere Wahl. Android Development is a thriving market. An increasing number of people are using smartphones with a variety of applications. Most of these need a way to persist data. There are different ways to achieve this in Android, amongst them shared preferences and thirdparty databases. The bachelor thesis at hand introduces two of these persistence techniques, SQLite with the Room persistence library and the Cloud Firestore database from Google. Novice Android developers constitute the primary target audience for this thesis, as it provides a detailed overview of the Android App Architecture components and the basic concepts necessary for understanding the implementation of the two databases. This includes among others the Model-View-ViewModel design pattern, the Lifecycle of Activities, LiveData, asynchronous programming, coroutines and Flow. Additionally, an introduction to the relational and non-relational database models and the SQL and NoSQL databases is provided. The final part of the thesis focuses on the implementation of these databases and it is presented with plentiful code snippets from the author‘s project called ClassromDuel. At the end, which database is preferable is heavily dependent on the use case. When the application is only used offline and the amount of persisted data is small, SQLite with Room is sufficient. However, when data is shared and needed in real-time, Cloud Firestore is a better choice.

This article presents an application for demonstrating the risks of granting unsafe authorizations on Android devices. These permissions allow the application to access sensitive user data. The application uses practical examples to illustrate what user data can be abused by enabling permission. Nowadays, the security of user data is a growing topic. Therefore, mobile users themselves must be aware of the risks they expose themselves to by granting permissions.

Diese Bachelorarbeit betrachtet das Zusammenspiel von Medienapparchitektur, Kernqualitäten von Apps, und Material Design. Android bietet Schlüsselkomponenten und Dokumentationen, um Medienapps entsprechend zu Qualitätskriterien und Designfragen zu gestalten. Das Ziel dieser Bachelorarbeit ist es zu zeigen, dass das Befolgen dieser Richtlinien hilft, Apps dahingehend zu verändern, dass sie mehr Funktionalitäten und qualitativ mehr angemessen sind. Recher- chiert wurde mithilfe der offiziellen Android und Kotlin Dokumentation. Das Ergebnis wird mit Klassendiagrammen und Codeversionenvergleich präsentiert. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die Android Leitfäden sich sowohl intellektuell als auch technisch bereichernd darstellen, um Apps zu entwickeln. This thesis examines the interaction of media app architecture, core app qualities and Material Design. Android offers key components and documentation to design media apps according to quality guidelines and design questions. The goal of this thesis is to show that following these guidelines helps altering apps to include more functionality and more appropriate quality. Research is based on the official Android and Kotlin documentation. The resulting work is shown with class diagrams and comparison of code versions. As an overall conclusion, the Android guidelines show to be both intellectually and technically profitable for developing apps.

Students in STEM fields often need to propose and develop programming solutions of different levels of complexity, for various scientific, technical, and engineering problems. In order to solve such tasks, they must have sufficient general programming skills and the knowledge of some standard programming language, such as C/C++, C#, Python, Java, Kotlin, JavaScript, Pascal. Alternatively, specialized programming languages and computing tools such as Matlab, Scilab, or GNU Octave, may be better suited for solving some of the problems and could sometimes be considered as a first choice. In this paper, the authors discuss the use of the nonstandard integer data types, so- called big integers, being able to store and handle large integer values that can be only represented with more than 64 bits. They analyse the possibilities of using those data types in education and programming practice for the well- known general-purpose languages: C/C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, and Pascal, as well as for the specialized high-level programming tools like free Matlab alternatives - Scilab and GNU Octave. For the languages without direct support for the big integers, the authors examine the possibility of inclusion of the freely available libraries, which include such types. After that, they measure and analyse the performance of the calculations with the big integer types on the standard Windows based, computing platform by using the fast- growing benchmark functions, such as factorials. The obtained results are presented, discussed, and compared.

Fernunterricht hat in den letzten Jahren an Popularität gewonnen, hauptsächlich aufgrund der Covid-19-Pandemie. Pädagogische Trends zeigen einen Wandel hin zu einem schülerzentrierten Klassenzimmer, dem verstärkten Einsatz von Technologie und einer flexibleren Art des Lernens. In dieser Arbeit liegt der Fokus auf dem aufstrebenden Feld des mobilen Lernens in Kombination mit dem Konzept der Gamification. Mobiles Lernen bietet den Schülern mehr Möglichkeiten, zum Beispiel kann es überall verwendet werden, passt gut in verschiedene Lernumgebungen und kann an spezielle Bedürfnisse angepasst werden. Heutzutage verfügen mobile Geräte über eine große Rechenleistung und angemessene Bildschirmgrößen, sodass sie erfolgreich im Lernprozess eingesetzt werden können. Gamification nutzt Elemente, die in Spielen vorhanden sind, und implementiert sie in Nicht-Spielkontexten, um die Benutzer zu motivieren und einzubeziehen. Es gibt zahlreiche Gamification-Elemente und eine Vielzahl von Anwendungsfällen, auf die sie angewendet werden können. Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Verwendung solcher Elemente in Android-Anwendungen mit dem Fokus, Studenten bei der Prüfungsvorbereitung zu helfen. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, erweitert die Literaturrecherche das Konzept der Gamification mit verschiedenen Experimenten zum Engagement der Schüler und gibt einen Einblick in mögliche Szenarien von gamifizierten Klassenzimmern, Websites und Android-Anwendungen. Die meisten Umfragen lassen auf positive Effekte von Gamification-Elementen, wie erhöhtes Engagement und bessere Leistung, schließen. Einen weiteren Einblick in die einzelnen Gamification-Elemente gibt das Projekt ClassroomDuel. Es ist eine Quiz-basierte Android-Anwendung mit dem Ziel, Informatikstudenten beim Lernprozess zu helfen. Der Timer, das Punktesystem, die Rangliste und die Kampfelemente werden ebenfalls mit Kotlin-Code-Snippets illustriert, während der Avatar, die Abzeichen und die Teamelemente nur als zukünftige Arbeit im Projekt eingeführt werden. Alles in allem sorgen Gamification-Elemente für mehr Spaß beim Lernen und unterstützen die extrinsische Motivation der Schüler, was bedeutet, dass Schüler sich motivierter fühlen, Aufgaben zu erledigen, wenn sie dafür eine Belohnung bekommen, selbst wenn dies nur virtuell ist. Remote education has gained popularity in recent years, mostly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Pedagogical trends are showing a change toward a student-centered classroom, the increased use of technology, and a more flexible way of learning. In this thesis, the focus is on the emerging field of Mobile learning combined with the concept of gamification. Mobile learning offers more possibilities for the students, for example, it can be used anywhere, it fits well in different learning environments, and it can be customized for special needs. Nowadays, mobile devices have great computational power and adequate screen sizes, so they can be successfully utilized in the learning process. Gamification makes use of elements that are present in games and implements them in non-game contexts to motivate and engage the users. There are numerous gamification elements and a vast amount of use cases they can be applied to. This thesis contemplates the use of such elements in Android applications with a focus on helping students with exam preparation. To achieve this goal, the literature survey extends the concept of gamification with different experiments on students´ engagement and it gives an insight into possible scenarios of gamified classrooms, websites, and Android applications. Most of the surveys conclude with the positive effects of gamification elements, such as increased engagement and better performance. The ClassroomDuel project gives further insight into the individual gamification elements. It is a quiz-based Android application for helping Computer Science students in the learning process. The timer, point system, leaderboard, and combat elements are also illustrated with Kotlin code snippets, while the avatar, badges, and team elements are only introduced as future work in the project. All in all, gamification elements create a more fun way to learn and support the extrinsic motivation of students, meaning that students feel more motivated to do some tasks if they get a reward for it, even if it is only a virtual one.

Визначена проблема відсутності програмного забезпечення для ідентифікації характеристик низькоякісного коду в проектах Android, що розроблені з використанням мови програмування Kotlin. Проведено огляд сучасних підходів до виявлення анти-шаблонів в програмному коді. Виконано аналіз методів, що використовуються для знаходження проблем з кодом для Android проектів. Розглянуто відомі підходи до ідентифікації: DECOR та Paprika. Зроблено висновки про важливість знаходження недоліків у програмному коді для розробки мобільного програмного забезпечення та його майбутнього обслуговування. Запропоновано підхід до ідентифікації антипатернів у програмному коді Kotlin для Android проектів. Представлено алгоритм ідентифікації неякісного коду. Технологія визначення характеристик неякісного коду включає чотири етапи: збір метрик про програмну систему, що аналізується, побудова моделі якості, конвертація моделі якості в графове представлення та ідентифікація наперед визначених антипатернів. Збір метрик, що включає пошук як Android-специфічних, так і об’єктноорієнтованих метрик Чидамбера та Камерера, пропонується реалізувати через синтаксичний аналіз вихідного коду та його конвертацію в абстрактне синтаксичне дерево з використанням бібліотеки KASTree. Впровадження бібліотеки KASTree пропонується через шаблон проектування Адаптер. Побудова моделі якості реалізується засобами інструменту Paprika, що доповнено низкою введених метрик. З метою забезпечення швидкості та якості виконання складних запитів для ідентифікації антипатернів використовується конвертація моделі якості саме в графове представлення. Безпосередньо ідентифікація антишаблонів за допомогою запитів використовує в якості основи різн оманітні шаблонні правила, у тому числі правила Католіно. Для представлення правил у вигляді запитів використовуються можливості застосування мови запитів Cypher до графової бази даних. Результати роботи можуть бути використані при розробці програмного забезпечення для ідентифікації неякісного коду в мобільних застосунках, що написані мовою Kotlin, а також при дослідженні антипатернів в мобільній розробці з використанням даної мови.

To date, logic-based technologies are either built on top or as extensions of the Prolog language, mostly working as monolithic solutions tailored upon specific inference procedures, unification mechanisms, or knowledge representation techniques. Instead, to maximise their impact, logic-based technologies should support and enable the general-purpose exploitation of all the manifold contributions from logic programming. Accordingly, we present 2 P-Kt , a reboot of the tu Prolog project offering a general, extensible, and interoperable ecosystem for logic programming and symbolic AI.

Currently, the majority of apps running on mobile devices are Android apps developed in Java. However, developers can now write Android applications using a new programming language: Kotlin, which Google adopted in 2017 as an official programming language for developing Android apps. Since then, Android developers have been able to: a) start writing Android applications from scratch using Kotlin, b) evolve their existing Android applications written in Java by adding Kotlin code (possible thanks to the interoperability between the two languages), or c) migrate their Android apps from Java to Kotlin. This paper aims to study this last case. We conducted a qualitative study to find out why Android developers have migrated Java code to Kotlin and to bring together their experiences about the process, in order to identify the main difficulties they have faced. To execute the study, we first identified commits from open-source Android projects that have migrated Java code to Kotlin. Then, we emailed the developers that wrote those migrations. We thus obtained information from 98 developers who had migrated code from Java to Kotlin. This paper presents the main reasons identified by the study for performing the migration. We found that developers migrated Java code to Kotlin in order to access programming language features (e.g., extension functions, lambdas, smart casts) that are not available with Java for Android development, and to obtain safer code (i.e., avoid null-pointer exceptions). Curs acadèmic: 2020/2021 En este documento se incluye la memoria del Trabajo Final de Grado que ha sido desarrollado en el transcurso de la estancia en prácticas en Cuatroochenta. El proyecto que se ha desarrollado durante la estancia ha consistido en una aplicación móvil orientada a la realización de publicaciones por parte de gente que esta aprendiendo sobre un tópico y desean recibir una retroalimentación sobre el trabajo que han realizado. Asimismo, los usuarios de la aplicación también podrán realizar otro tipo de acciones como consultar los rankings o sus datos del perfil. El proyecto es una aplicación Android Nativa. Es por ello que ha sido desarrollado en Kotlin y XML, para la gestión de la lógica y de las vistas respectivamente. Además el desarrollo ha seguido la metodología ágil SCRUM, en la cual se han ordenado las diferentes historias estimadas y ordenadas en una product backlog. En proyecto ha sido realizado conjuntamente con otro compañero encargado de la parte del Backend, con el cual se ha tenido que trabajar para analizar y diseñar el sistema sobre todo durante las primeras fases del desarrollo.

In recent years, with more than 3 million applications on its official store, Google’s Android has dominated the market of mobile operating systems worldwide. Despite this success, Google has continued evolving its operating system and its toolkits to ease application development. In 2017 Google declared Kotlin as an official Android programming language. More recently, during the Google I/O 2019, Google announced that Android became ‘Kotlin-first’, which means that new API, libraries, and documentation will target Kotlin and eventually Java and Kotlin as preferred language to create new Android applications. Kotlin is a programming language that runs on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and it is fully interoperable with Java because both languages are compiled to JVM bytecode. Due to this characteristic, Android developers do not need to migrate their existing applications to Kotlin to start using Kotlin in these applications. Moreover, Kotlin provides a different approach to write applications because it combines object-oriented and functional features. Therefore, we hypothesize that the adoption of Kotlin by developers may affect different aspects of Android applications’ development. However, one year after this first announcement, there were no studies in the literature about Kotlin. In this thesis, we conducted a series of empirical studies to address these lacks and build a better understanding of creating high-quality Android applications using Kotlin. First, we carried a study to measure the degree of adoption of Kotlin. Our results showed that 11% of the studied Android applications had adopted Kotlin. Then, we analyzed how the adoption of Kotlin impacted the quality of Android applications in terms of code smells. We found that the introduction of Kotlin in Android applications initially written in Java produces a rise in the quality scores from 50% to 80% according to the code smell considered. We analyzed the evolution of usage of features introduced by Kotlin, such as Smart cast, and how the amount of Kotlin code changes over applications’ evolution. We found that the number of instances of features tends to grow throughout applications’ evolution. Finally, we focused on the migration of Android applications from Java to Kotlin. We found that 25% of the open source applications that were initially written in Java have entirely migrated to Kotlin, and for 19%, the migration was done gradually, throughout several versions, thanks to the interoperability between Java and Kotlin. This migration activity is challenging because: a) each migrated piece of code must be exhaustively tested after the migration to ensure it preserves the expected behavior; b) a project can be large, composed of several candidate files to be migrated. In this thesis, we present an approach to support migration, which suggests, given a version of an application written in Java and eventually, in Kotlin, the most convenient files to migrate. We evaluated our approach’s feasibility by applying two different machine learning techniques: classification and learning-to-rank. Our results showed that both techniques modestly outperform random approaches. Nevertheless, our approach is the first that proposes the use of machine learning to recommend file-level migrations. Therefore, our results define a baseline for future work. Since the migration from Java to Kotlin may positively impact the application’s maintenance and that migration is time-consuming and challenging, developers may use our approach to select the files to be migrated first. Finally, we discuss several research perspectives opened by our results that can improve the experience of creating high-quality Android applications using Kotlin.; Android de Google domine le marché des systèmes d’exploitation mobiles dans le monde entier. Malgré ce succès, Google continue à faire évoluer son système d’exploitation et ses kits d’outils pour faciliter le développement des applications. Kotlin est le langage de programmation officiel d'Android. Il s’exécute sur la machine virtuelle Java (JVM) et il est entièrement interopérable avec Java car les deux langages sont compilés en bytecode JVM. En raison de cette caractéristique, les développeurs Android n’ont pas besoin de migrer leurs applications existantes vers Kotlin pour commencer à l’utiliser dans ces applications. De plus, il propose une approche différente pour écrire des applications car il combine des fonctionnalités orientées objet et fonctionnelles. Par conséquent, nous émettons l’hypothèse que l’adoption de Kotlin par les développeurs Android peut affecter différents aspects du développement des applications Android. Cependant, un an après cette première annonce, il n’y avait aucune étude dans la littérature sur Kotlin. Dans cette thèse, nous avons mené une série d’études empiriques pour combler ces lacunes et développer une meilleure compréhension de la création d’applications Android de haute qualité à l’aide de Kotlin. Tout d’abord, nous avons réalisé une étude pour mesurer le degré d’adoption de Kotlin. Nos résultats ont montré que 11% des applications Android étudiées avaient adopté Kotlin. Ensuite, nous avons analysé l’impact de l’adoption de Kotlin sur la qualité des applications Android en termes de défauts de code. Nous avons constaté que l’introduction du code Kotlin dans les applications Android initialement écrites en Java produit une augmentation des scores de qualité de 50% à 80% selon les défauts de code considérés. Nous avons analysé l’évolution de l’utilisation des fonctionnalités introduites par Kotlin, telles que Smart cast, et comment la quantité de code Kotlin change au fil de l’évolution des applications. Nous avons constaté que le nombre d’instances de fonctionnalités a tendance à augmenter tout au long de l’évolution des applications. Enfin, nous nous sommes concentrés sur la migration des applications Android de Java vers Kotlin. Nous avons constaté que 25% des applications open source initialement écrites en Java ont complètement migré vers Kotlin, et pour 19%, la migration s’est faite progressivement, sur plusieurs versions, grâce à l’interopérabilité entre Java et Kotlin. Cette activité de migration est difficile car : a) chaque morceau de code migré doit être testé de manière exhaustive après la migration pour s’assurer qu’il préserve le comportement attendu; b) un projet peut être énorme, composé de plusieurs dossiers candidats à migrer. Dans cette thèse, nous présentons une approche de prise en charge de la migration, qui propose, étant donné une version d’une application écrite en Java et éventuellement, en Kotlin, les fichiers les plus pratiques à migrer. Nous avons évalué la faisabilité de notre approche en appliquant deux techniques d’apprentissage automatique différentes : la classification et l’apprentissage par rang. Nos résultats ont montré que les deux techniques surpassent légèrement les approches aléatoires. Toutefois, notre approche est la première à proposer l’utilisation du machine learning pour recommander des migrations au niveau des fichiers. Par conséquent, nos résultats définissent une base de référence pour les travaux futurs. Comme la migration de Java vers Kotlin peut avoir un impact positif sur la maintenance de l’application et que la migration est longue et difficile, les développeurs peuvent utiliser notre approche pour sélectionner les fichiers à migrer en premier. Enfin, nous discutons de plusieurs perspectives de recherche ouvertes par nos résultats qui peuvent améliorer l’expérience de création d’applications Android de haute qualité à l’aide de Kotlin.

A faulty concurrency system may have an impact in the user experience of the software product and consequently to the company that owns that product. The main goal of this research is to understand the impact of concurrency in Android development and further help developers/companies to discretise the best approaches for concurrency. The research initially centres on the importance of concurrency in Android applications as well as the main approaches for concurrency/threading in Android development. It further illustrates why some asynchronous programming approaches do not fit modern Android development. This allowed the research to concentrate on the most relevant approaches to concurrency and consequently produce more pertinent results for the current state of Android development. After acknowledging Kotlin Coroutines and RxJava as the most relevant approaches to concurrency for Android (at the time of writing this document), this research moved on with the development of a case study application. This application was implemented using both Kotlin Coroutines and RxJava while reusing as much code as possible. There is a single module dedicated to the main user interface of the application and two modules (one for Kotlin Coroutines and one for RxJava) dedicated to concurrently run the necessary steps for each feature and further propagating the necessary data to the user interface. This allowed a clear separation of the specific code needed to perform the same features with Kotlin Coroutines and RxJava, facilitating its later comparison. The design of this application and its features required prior assessment of common use cases for concurrency in Android to form a fitting case study. With the intent of assessing the impact of using Kotlin Coroutines and RxJava in Android applications, we discretised the main software quality attributes to consider for Android development. By taking this step, we were able to focus mainly on the Performance and Maintainability of an Android application and understand how the usage of both Kotlin Coroutines and RxJava affects these attributes. The impact of each library in the performance and maintainability of an Android application was measured using software metrics that were provided by a combination of static analysis, benchmarks, and profiling tests. The process of designing the set of tests, setting up the required tools and the overall development of the test environment for this research is also explored in this document. The results for Kotlin Coroutines and RxJava were then illustrated, compared, and interpreted to fulfil our objective of understanding if, at the time of writing this document, there is a more sensible approach to concurrency for Android development according to our set of tests. The results for our set of tests and case study application revealed that RxJava and Kotlin Coroutines do not differently compromise the performance and maintainability of an Android application, for what developers and companies should not be limited when choosing between these libraries.

Diese Bachelorarbeit bietet dem Leser eine Einführung in die Bibliotheken und Klassen, die zusammen die Android Architecture Components bilden sowie einen Einblick, wie diese Komponenten miteinander verwendet werden können. Da die Android Architecture Components erst 2017, beziehungsweise 2018, veröffentlicht wurden, stellen sie eine recht neue Sammlung an von Google entwickelten Programmierfunktionen dar. Sie zielen darauf ab, den Entwicklungsprozess mobiler Applikationen für die Android Plattform zu erleichtern. Die Komponenten umfassen die Bibliotheken Lifecycle, Room, Paging, Navigation und WorkManager sowie die Klassen LiveData und ViewModel. Über diese Bibliotheken und Klassen Bescheid zu wissen sowie darüber, wie diese miteinander interagieren, kann dem Entwickler dabei helfen, Programmieraufgaben zu bewältigen, die, laut einer von Google durchgeführten Umfrage, von vielen in der Branche als schwierig bezeichnet werden. Problembereiche, die in dieser Umfrage festgestellt wurden und von den Android Architecture Components behandelt werden, umfassen das Management von Lebenszyklen, Persistenz, Multi-Threading, Hintergrundaufgaben, Navigation und Paging. Neben textlichen Beschreibungen bietet die vorliegende Arbeit Auflistungen von Code geschrieben in Kotlin sowie grafische Visualisierungen der Funktionsweisen der Komponenten. Als Methodik wurde eine Literaturrecherche angewandt, im Zuge derer unterschiedliche Medientypen zurate gezogen wurden. Die Quellen setzen sich aus Büchern, Fachartikeln sowie online Quellen, die offiziell von Google zur Verfügung gestellt werden, nämlich Konferenzvorträge und die offizielle Dokumentation, zusammen. In this bachelor thesis, the reader will get a detailed introduction to the libraries and classes making up the Android Architecture Components as well as an insight into how the components can interact with each other. Having been released only in 2017 and 2018 respectively, the Android Architecture Components represent a rather new set of programming features created by Google. They aim to simplify the process of developing mobile apps for the Android Platform. The components comprise the libraries Lifecycle, Room, Paging, Navigation and WorkManager as well as the classes LiveData and ViewModel. Knowing about these libraries and classes as well as how they interact with one another can assist the developer in tackling programming tasks that are, according to a survey conducted by Google, regarded as difficult by many in the industry. Issues detected in this survey and dealt with by the Android Architecture Components comprise the management of Lifecycles, Persistence, Multi-threading, Background Jobs, Navigation and Paging. Apart from textual explanations, this thesis provides code listings written in Kotlin as well as graphical visualizations of the components’ workings. The methodology used is a literature survey consulting different types of media. The sources encompass books, scientific papers as well as online resources offered officially by Google, namely conference talks and the official documentation.

Kotlin is a relatively new language that has received much attention since its first stable release in February 2016. Despite the fast growth of the language, there is a lack of libraries to provide an intuitive, typed abstract syntax tree (AST). Recognizing the utility of user-friendly ASTs with support for various analysis and transformation tasks, we make a first contribution towards bringing one for Kotlin with KtSpoon. Kotlin’s interoperability capabilities with Java enables exploitation of Java’s mature echo system and we propose the use of the Spoon library with its Java metamodel as a base for a model of Kotlin. We show the feasibility of this approach with KtSpoon, which is implemented through small additions to the Spoon metamodel. It consists of a tree builder that outputs a Spoon AST from Kotlin source code and a pretty-printer that prints it back to source code. Through an empirical study, we find out that KtSpoon accurately can represent the full Kotlin language. We conclude that while it is possible to model the Kotlin language with small modifications to the Spoon metamodel, it will likely require a partial reimplementation for it to be an intuitive model for developers. Kotlin är ett relativt nytt språk som har fått mycket uppmärksamhet sedan dess första stabila version släpptes i Februari 2016. Trots att språket vuxit snabbt så saknar det fortfarande ett bibliotek som tillhandahåller ett intuitivt och typat abstrakt syntaxträd (AST). Nyttan av användarvänliga abstrakta syntaxträd motiverar oss att ta ett första steg mot att skapa ett sådant för Kotlin med KtSpoon. Kotlins interoperabilitet med Java möjliggör nyttjandet av Javas omfattande ekosystem och vi föreslår därför användandet av biblioteket Spoon och dess metamodell av Java som grund för en modell av Kotlin. Genom skapandet av KtSpoon visar vi att det är möjligt att modellera kod skriven i Kotlin med små tillägg i Spoons metamodell. KtSpoon består av en trädbyggare som skapar ett AST från källkod skriven i Kotlin samt en skrivare som skriver tillbaka det till källkod. Genom en empirisk studie finner vi att det är möjligt att modellera hela språket Kotlin med små förändringar av Spoons metamodell, men att det sannolikt krävs en ny implementation av modellen för att den ska vara intuitiv för utvecklare att använda sig av.

Die effiziente Speicherung von Daten ist ein wichtiges Thema für mobile Applikationen, da kaum eine App funktionieren kann, ohne zumindest eine gewisse Menge an persistenten Daten zu speichern. Daher soll diese Bachelorarbeit den LeserInnen eine theoretische wie auch praktische Einführung in Datenbanksysteme bieten, wobei der spezielle Fokus hier auf dem Gebiet der Entwicklung mobiler Applikationen liegt. Der praktische Teil der Bachelorarbeit ergibt sich aus einer Literaturrecherche und stellt einen Überblick über relationale sowie verschiedene Arten von nicht-relationalen Datenbanksystemen dar. Die Arbeit bietet außerdem einen praktischen Einblick in dieses Thema, da drei Datenbanksysteme ausgewählt wurden, um implementiert und dann verglichen zu werden. Die vielfältige Auswahl setzt sich zusammen aus SQLite, einer relationalen, eingebetteten Variante, ObjectBox, einer nicht-relationalen, eingebetteten Möglichkeit und der Firebase Realtime Database, einer Echtzeitdatenbank und zweiten nicht-relationalen Opti-on, die in der Cloud gehostet wird. Zusammenfassend kann gesagt werden, dass die Beispielapplikation, die für die Android Plattform mit Kotlin entwickelt wurde, mit allen drei genannten Varianten erfolgreich umgesetzt werden konnte. Ein Ergebnis, das der Vergleich der Datenbanksysteme hervorbrachte, ist, dass die Adaptierung der originalen Applikation, die mit SQLite und Room umgesetzt wurde, zu ObjectBox viel schneller realisiert werden konnte als die Umsetzung der Firebase Realtime Database. Efficient storage of data is an important matter for mobile applications as hardly any app can get by without having to store at least some kind of persistent data. Therefore, this bachelor thesis will provide the reader with a theoretical as well as a practical introduction to database systems with special focus on the field of mobile app development. The theoretical part of the thesis has been put together by conducting a literature survey and presents an overview of relational as well as different types of non-relational database systems. The thesis also offers a practical insight into the topic, as three database systems were selected to be implemented and then compared. This diverse choice comprises SQLite, a relational, embedded option, ObjectBox, a non-relational, embedded possibility and the Firebase Realtime Database, a second non-relational option that is hosted in the cloud. In conclusion, it was possible to successfully implement the sample application, which was developed for the Android platform and written in Kotlin, with all of the options mentioned above. One result that the comparison of the database systems revealed was that adapting the original app version, which was realised with SQLite and Room, to ObjectBox was accomplished much quicker than implementing the Firebase Realtime Database.

This talk is gonna be about the scenery framework, a framework we have developed for visualising geometry and large volumetric data (TB+) using Kotlin and Vulkan or OpenGL. Coroutines, Kotlin's conciseness and syntactic sugar enabled the efficient codebase of scenery to integrate with popular image processing tools, and support Virtual Reality rendering, both on headsets and on distributed multi-projector systems like CAVEs. We'll show code, demos, lessons learned, and demonstrate how we use the framework in a visualisation software for end users, sciview, that we have also developed.
