The described cases are from Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The collective message delivered by the examined cases is that e-government is becoming an integral part of the respective countries' life, with a by-product being an increase in the society's cyber-literacy. The paper's thesis is that, at the undergraduate degree level, four courses need be included on the utilisation of cyberpower, while at the individual course level, the syllabi must contain deliverables that are web-researched and web-presentable. In addition, the student-faculty response time needs to be minimised to maintain an efficient and effective teaching-learning environment.

The large multicomponent K-complex (KC) and the rhythmic spindle are the hallmarks of non-rapid eye movement (NREM)-2 sleep stage. We studied with magnetoencephalography (MEG) the progress of light sleep (NREM-1 and NREM-2) and emergence of KCs and spindles. Seven periods of interest (POI) were analyzed: wakefulness, the two quiet "core" periods of light sleep (periods free from any prominent phasic or oscillatory events) and four periods before and during spindles and KCs. For each POI, eight 2-s (1250 time slices) segments were used. We employed magnetic field tomography (MFT) to extract an independent tomographic estimate of brain activity from each MEG data sample. The spectral power was then computed for each voxel in the brain for each segment of each POI. The sets of eight maps from two POIs were contrasted using a voxel-by-voxel t -test. Only increased spectral power was identified in the four key contrasts between POIs before and during spindles and KCs versus the NREM2 core. Common increases were identified for all four subjects, especially within and close to the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). These common increases were widespread for low frequencies, while for higher frequencies they were focal, confined to specific brain areas. For the pre-KC POI, only one prominent increase was identified, confined to the theta/alpha bands in a small area in the dorsal caudal part of ACC (dcACC). During KCs, the activity in this area grows in intensity and extent (in space and frequency), filling the space between the areas that expanded their low frequency activity (in the delta band) during NREM2 compared to NREM1. Our main finding is that prominent spectral power increases before NREM2 graphoelements are confined to the dcACC, and only for KCs, sharing common features with changes of activity in dcACC of the well-studied error related negativity (ERN). ERN is seen in awake state, in perceptual conflict and situations where there is a difference between expected and actual environmental or internal events. These results suggest that a KC is the sleep side of the awake state ERN, both serving their putative sentinel roles in the frame of the saliency network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, students' performance prediction has been identified as one of the most essential and challenging research topics for educational institutions. The necessity for exploitation and analysis of data originating from several educational contexts has led to a widespread implementation of familiar machine learning methods trying to effectively analyse students' academic behaviour and predict their performance. The early detection of low performers is of major importance for open universities seeking to decrease dropout ratios, improve educational outcomes and provide high quality education. This paper introduces an ensemble of classification and regression algorithms for predicting students' performance in a distance web-based course. Several state-of-the-art machine learning methods have also been applied to compare the efficiency of our method. A plethora of experiments have been conducted for this purpose, using data provided by the Hellenic Open University. The proposed ensemble combines classification and regression rules and is as accurate as the powerful ensembles, while the produced model remains comprehensive. Summary: We studied slow (≤2.5 Hz) nonevolving generalized periodic epileptiform discharges (GPEDs) in the electroencephalogram (EEG) of comatose patients after cardiac arrest (CA) in search of evidence that could assist early diagnosis of possible hypoxic nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) and its differentiation from terminal brain anoxia (BA), which can present with a similar EEG pattern. We investigated the topography of the GPEDs in the first post‐CA EEGs of 13 patients, using voltage‐mapping, and compared findings between two patients with NCSE and GPEDs > 2.5 Hz (group 1), and 11 with GPEDs ≤ 2 Hz, of whom six had possible NCSE (group 2) and five had terminal BA (group 3). Voltage mapping showed frontal maximum for the negative phase of the GPEDs in all patients of groups 1 and 2, but not in any of the patients of group 3, who invariably showed maximization of the negative phase posteriorly. Morphology, amplitude, and duration of the GPEDs varied across the groups, without distinctive features for possible NCSE. These findings provide evidence that, in hypoxic coma after CA with slow GPEDs, anterior topography of the maximum GPED negativity on voltage mapping may be a distinctive biomarker for possible NCSE contributing to the coma. We used tomographic analysis of MEG signals to characterize regional spectral changes in the brain at sleep onset and during light sleep. We identified two key processes that may causally link to loss of consciousness during the quiet or "core" periods of NREM1. First, active inhibition in the frontal lobe leads to delta and theta spectral power increases. Second, activation suppression leads to sharp drop of spectral power in alpha and higher frequencies in posterior parietal cortex. During NREM2 core periods, the changes identified in NREM1 become more widespread, but focal increases also emerge in alpha and low sigma band power in frontal midline cortical structures, suggesting reemergence of some monitoring of internal and external environment. Just before spindles and K-complexes (KCs), the hallmarks of NREM2, we identified focal spectral power changes in pre-frontal cortex, mid cingulate, and areas involved in environmental and internal monitoring, i.e., the rostral and sub-genual anterior cingulate. During both spindles and KCs, alpha and low sigma bands increases. Spindles emerge after further active inhibition (increase in delta power) of the frontal areas responsible for environmental monitoring, while in posterior parietal cortex, power increases in low and high sigma bands. KCs are correlated with increase in alpha power in the monitoring areas. These specific regional changes suggest strong and varied vigilance changes for KCs, but vigilance suppression and sharpening of cognitive processing for spindles. This is consistent with processes designed to ensure accurate and uncorrupted memory consolidation. The changes during KCs suggest a sentinel role: evaluation of the salience of provoking events to decide whether to increase processing and possibly wake up, or to actively inhibit further processing of intruding influences. The regional spectral patterns of NREM1, NREM2, and their dynamic changes just before spindles and KCs reveal an edge effect facilitating the emergence of spindles and KCs and defining the precise loci where they might emerge. In the time domain, the spindles are seen in widespread areas of the cortex just as reported from analysis of intracranial data, consistent with the emerging consensus of a differential topography that depends on the kind of memory stored. This article reviews the contribution of pharmacologically induced acute and chronic animal models to our understanding of epilepsies featuring non-convulsive generalized seizures, the typical and atypical absence seizures. Typical absences comprise about 5% of all epilepsies regardless of age and the atypical ones are even more common. Although absence epilepsy was thought to be relatively benign, children with childhood epilepsy (CAE) turn out to have a high rate of pretreatment attention deficits that persist despite seizure freedom. The phenomenon of the absence seizure has long attracted research interest because of the clear temporal relationship of the conspicuous EEG rhythm of 3 Hz generalized spike and wave discharges (GSWD) and the parallel transient “loss of consciousness” characterizing these seizures which is time-locked with the GSWD. Indeed, clinical epileptologists, basic scientists and neurophysiologists have long recognized in GSWD a unique electrographic and behavioral marker of the genetic predisposition to most types of epilepsy. Interestingly, the subject is still controversial since it has recently been proposed that both classification terms of CAE currently in use: idiopathic and primary generalized, be abandoned – a point of debate. During Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep (NREM) the brain is relatively disconnected from the environment, while connectedness between brain areas is also decreased. Evidence indicates, that these dynamic connectivity changes are delivered by microstructural elements of sleep: short periods of environmental stimuli evaluation followed by sleep promoting procedures. The connectivity patterns of the latter, among other aspects of sleep microstructure, are still to be fully elucidated. We suggest here a methodology for the assessment and investigation of the connectivity patterns of EEG microstructural elements, such as sleep spindles. The methodology combines techniques in the preprocessing, estimation, error assessing and visualization of results levels in order to allow the detailed examination of the connectivity aspects (levels and directionality of information flow) over frequency and time with notable resolution, while dealing with the volume conduction and EEG reference assessment. The high temporal and frequency resolution of the methodology will allow the association between the microelements and the dynamically forming networks that characterize them, and consequently possibly reveal aspects of the EEG microstructure. The proposed methodology is initially tested on artificially generated signals for proof of concept and subsequently applied to real EEG recordings via a custom built MATLAB-based tool developed for such studies. Preliminary results from 843 fast sleep spindles recorded in whole night sleep of 5 healthy volunteers indicate a prevailing pattern of interactions between centroparietal and frontal regions. We demonstrate hereby, an opening to our knowledge attempt to estimate the scalp EEG connectivity that characterizes fast sleep spindles via an "EEG-element connectivity" methodology we propose. The application of the latter, via a computational tool we developed suggests it is able to investigate the connectivity patterns related to the occurrence of EEG microstructural elements. Network characterization of specified physiological or pathological EEG microstructural elements can potentially be of great importance in the understanding, identification, and prediction of health and disease. Mounting evidence for the role of sleep spindles in neuroplasticity has led to an increased interest in these non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep oscillations. It has been hypothesized that fast and slow spindles might play a different role in memory processing. Here, we present a new sleep spindle detection algorithm utilizing a continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and individual adjustment of slow and fast spindle frequency ranges. Eighteen nap recordings of ten subjects were used for algorithm validation. Our method was compared with both a human scorer and a commercially available SIESTA spindle detector. For the validation set, mean agreement between our detector and human scorer measured during sleep stage 2 using kappa coefficient was 0.45, whereas mean agreement between our detector and SIESTA algorithm was 0.62. Our algorithm was also applied to sleep-related memory consolidation data previously analyzed with a SIESTA detector and confirmed previous findings of significant correlation between spindle density and declarative memory consolidation. We then applied our method to a study in monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins, examining the genetic component of slow and fast sleep spindle parameters. Our analysis revealed strong genetic influence on variance of all slow spindle parameters, weaker genetic effect on fast spindles, and no effects on fast spindle density and number during stage 2 sleep. K-complexes and sleep spindles often grouped together characterize the second stage of NREM sleep and interest has been raised on a possible interaction of their underlying mechanisms. The reported inhibition of spindles power for about 15 seconds following evoked K-complexes has implications on their role in arousal. Our objective was to assess this inhibition following spontaneous K-complexes. We used time-frequency analysis of spontaneous K-complexes selected from wholenight EEG recordings of normal subjects. Our results show that spindles are most often observed at the positive phase following the peak of a spontaneous KC (70%). At latencies of 1-3 s following the peak of the K-complex, spindles almost disappear. Compared to long-term effects described for evoked KCs, sleep spindle power is not affected by spontaneous KCs for latencies of 5-15 s. Observation of the recurrence rate of sporadic spindles suggests that the reduction of power at 1-3 s most likely reflects a refractory period of spindles lasting for 1-2 s, rather than an effect of KCs. These results suggest that the mechanisms underlying spontaneous KCs do not affect spindle power as in the case of evoked KCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Although adenosine is widely assumed to be an endogenous anticonvulsant its role in epileptogenesis is still contradictory. Using slices from the dorsal (DH) and the vental (VH) rat hippocampus and extracellular recordings from the CA3 field we aimed to determine the effects of endogenous adenosine on the expression and long-term maintenance of epileptiform activity induced by blockade of adenosine receptors types A1 (A1R) and A2 (A2R) under conditions of low magnesium. We found that the A1Rs blockade induced persistent epileptiform discharges (PED) more frequently in VH (by 52%) than in DH (by 31%). The induction of PED upon an additional blockade of A2Rs increased in VH (by 48%) but decreased in DH (by 74%). Remarkably, the increment in VH was prevented by a blockade of NMDARs. A blockade of A2Rs increased the NMDAR-mediated component of evoked synaptic potential in both VH and DH (by ∼100%) but suppressed the non-NMDAR-mediated component in DH but not VH. A blockade of A1Rs induced PED equally in DH (76%) and VH (80%) via a NMDAR-independent mechanism. A blockade of A2Rs under blockade of A1Rs and NMDARs reduced the PED to 17% in DH and to 38% in VH. These findings show that A2Rs play a different role in the long-term maintenance of epileptiform activity between DH and VH and suggest that endogenous activation of A2Rs facilitates NMDAR-independent induction of PED in both hippocampal poles, but suppresses NMDAR-dependent induction of PED in VH. Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in chronic liver disease is characterized by neuropsychiatric and motor disturbances and associated with a net increase of inhibitory neurotransmission. Though many studies, mostly carried out in animal models, have linked dysfunctions of single neurotransmitter systems with the pathogenesis of HE, reports concerning neurotransmitter receptor alterations are controversial. Little is known about the situation in humans. We carried out a multireceptor assessment of HE-associated changes in neurotransmitter receptor densities and affinities in human post-mortem brain samples. Dissociation constants and densities of different binding sites for glutamate, GABA, acetylcholine, norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine and adenosine were determined by in vitro binding assays and quantitative receptor autoradiography in the motor cortex and putamen of HE and control brains. HE cases do not build a homogeneous group, but differ concerning direction and intensity of binding site density divergences from control values. The acetylcholine M2 binding site dissociation constant was significantly higher in HE brains. Nicotinic acetylcholine and adenosine type 1 and 2A densities were significantly down-regulated in the putamen of HE brains. Our data suggest that neurotransmitter alterations are probably not the primary key factor responsible for the neuropsychiatric and motor disturbances associated with HE. Copyright © 2009 S. Abstract: The implication of high-frequency network oscillations (HFOs) in brain pathology resides in as yet unclear mechanisms. Employing field recordings from ventral hippocampal slices and two models of epileptogenesis (i.e. establishment of interictal-like persistent bursts), we found that HFOs associated with epileptiform bursts and excitatory synaptic transmission were co-modulated during epileptogenesis. NMDA receptor-dependent epileptogenesis in CA3 was consistently accompanied by long-lasting strengthening in synaptic transmission (by 94±17%, n =5) and HFOs (frequency, power and duration increased by 24±8%, 57±18% and 33±10%, respectively). Co-modulation of synaptic transmission and HFOs was also observed in NMDA receptor-independent epileptogenesis, although in individual experiments either enhancement or depression of both phenomena was observed. Pathological HFOs >200 Hz were unequivocally present in persistent bursts induced by NMDA receptor-dependent but not NMDA receptor-independent mechanisms. The duration of pathological HFOs associated with persistent bursts but not of HFOs associated with bursts before the establishment of epileptogenesis was linearly and strongly correlated with the duration of bursts (r =0.58, P <0.0001). We propose that interplay between spontaneous synchronous bursting and long-lasting synaptic potentiation accompanying certain forms of epileptogenesis may underlie long-lasting potentiation of HFOs, whose quantitative aspects may reliably signal the degree of network changes involved in epileptogenesis. Hippocampal functions appear to be segregated along the dorso-ventral axis of the structure. Differences at the cellular and local neuronal network level may be involved in this functional segregation. In this study the characteristics of CA1 recurrent inhibition (RI) were measured and compared between dorsal (DH, n = 95) and ventral (VH, n = 60) hippocampal slices, using recordings of suprathreshold field potentials. RI strength was estimated as the percentile decrease of the population spike (PS) amplitude evoked with an orthodromic stimulus (at the Schaffer collaterals) when preceded by an antidromic stimulus (at the alveus). Varying the interpulse interval (IPI) between the two stimuli, we estimated RI duration. Alvear stimulation produced significant PS suppression in both VH and DH at every IPI tested, from 10 to 270 ms. Moreover, gradually more oblique DH (but not VH) slices displayed increasing RI, which at IPIs ≤125 ms was reversibly abolished by the GABAA receptor antagonist picrotoxin (10 μM). The GABAA-mediated RI, measured under the blockade of GABAB receptors, was weaker, decayed faster and lasted less in VH compared to DH slices, regardless of the slice orientation. Specifically, in VH compared to DH, the PS suppression at 20 ms was 34.4 ± 4.5% versus 69.9 ± 6.5% ( P < 0.001), the time constant of RI decay was 29 ± 2.4 versus 87.5 ± 13.6 ms ( P < 0.01) and the duration was 50 versus 125 ms ( P < 0.001). Thus, GABAA-mediated RI may control the CA1 excitatory output less effectively in VH compared to DH. The observed dorso-ventral differences in RI contribute to the longitudinal diversification of the structure and may underlie to some extent the region-specificity of hippocampal functions. Advances in hardware and software have made possible the reconstruction of brain activity from non-invasive electrophysiological measurements over a large part of the brain. The appreciation of the information content in the data is enhanced when relevant anatomical detail is also available for visualization. Different neuroscientific questions give rise to different requirements for optimal superposition of structure and function. Most available software deal with scalar measures of activity, especially hemodynamic changes. In contrast, the electrophysiological observables are generated by electrical activity, which depends on the synchrony of neuronal assemblies and the geometry of the local cortical surface. We describe methods for segmentation and visualization of spatio-temporal brain activity, which allow the interplay of geometry and scalar as well as vector properties of the current density directly in the representations. The utility of these methods is demonstrated through displays of tomographic reconstructions of early sensory processing in the somatosensory and visual modality extracted from magnetoencephalography (MEG) data. The activation course characteristic to a specific area could be observed as current density or statistical maps independently and/or contrasted to the activity in other areas or the whole brain. MEG and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activations were simultaneously visualized. Integrating and visualizing complementary functional data into a single environment helps evaluating analysis and understanding structure/function relationships in normal and diseased brain. The present study shows that adult rat transverse slices from the ventral hippocampus perfused with standard medium persistently generate spontaneous synchronous field potentials. In CA1 st. pyramidale this regular ventral hippocampus spontaneous synchronous activity (VHSSA) was positive with mean amplitude 0.18±0.02 mV (n=80 slices) and occurred every 0.48±0.02 s. Simultaneous intracellular recordings from CA1 pyramidal neurons demonstrated that concomitant hyperpolarizations invariably occurred in association to this field activity and could thus constitute its electrical generators. These hyperpolarizations, had mean amplitude 2.7±0.6 mV, duration at half amplitude 44.8±6.6 ms, they reversed at −72.6±1.5 mV (n=10 cells), they effectively suspended the depolarization-induced tonic neuronal firing of all ten pyramidal neurons and they were reversibly abolished, together with field potentials, by the GABAA receptor antagonist bicuculline (5 μM, n=4). VHSSA was also dependent on fast glutamatergic transmission, since it was blocked by the antagonist of AMPA/kainate receptors 6-Cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione disodium (10 μM, n=3). We propose that, under standard in vitro conditions, synchronous GABAA-mediated hyperpolarizing potentials are spontaneously generated in pyramidal neurons presumably resulting from the phasic quasi-rhythmic discharge of a local interneuronal network of ventral hippocampus. This study demonstrates that transverse slices taken from the ventral hippocampus of adult rats perfused with a medium of normal ionic composition sustain spontaneous periodic field potentials due to the synchronous activity of a population of neurons. This ventral hippocampus spontaneous synchronous activity (VHSSA) in CA1 stratum pyramidale consisted of positive potentials (∼0.12 mV, 55 ms) occurring at a frequency of 2.8 ± 0.2 Hz for hours without interruption. VHSSA was most frequently observed in slices taken 1–3 mm from the ventral end of hippocampus, and was absent in slices taken from tissue more than 4.5 mm away from it. Stimulation of Schaffer collaterals primed the appearance of potentials, which were similar to VHSSA and clearly distinguishable from excitatory postsynaptic potentials. In view of the known relative proneness of ventral hippocampus to epilepsy, we perfused ventral slices with high-[K+]o medium (8 mM). Albeit reduced in amplitude, VHSSA persisted during the high-[K+]o induced interictal-like epileptiform activity. We could not document any temporal relationship between the two phenomena. Low concentrations of the antagonist of γ-amino-butyric acid receptors, type A, bicuculline (2–3 μM), which enhanced the high-[K+]o induced epileptiform activity, reversibly blocked the VHSSA. We conclude that under standard in vitro conditions small circuits in the ventral hippocampus are most often and for long periods of time engaged in synchronous quasi-rhythmic low-frequency activity, generated locally by mechanisms substantially differing from those supporting epileptiform discharges.
