12. Middle-Class Music Making? Social Class, 'Race,' and Their Intersections in the Practice of School Popular Music

Abstract

This article explores how social class, "race," and their intersections manifest in Finnish popular music education (PME) through an exploration of popular music practices in one upper elementary music classroom where I worked as a teacher-researcher. By engaging with systems reflexivity, I illustrate how social class, racialization, and their intersections work together with the social system of PME to maintain inequalities. I argue that in the popular music classroom, identity work is especially required from the students who belong to racialized and lower-class groups. Furthermore, I argue that PME (re)produces a Eurocentric practice of "school popular music" that favors middle-classness and Whiteness. I suggest that moving towards genuinely multivocal and democratic music education entails questioning popular music as an eminent democracy maker. Alternatively, democracy might be fostered by considering the intersectional identities of the students--a process for which systems reflexivity serves as a useful tool.

13. Knotworking -- Not Working: Interprofessional Collaboration and Co-Figuration of Pre-Service Special Education Teachers

Abstract

The growing expectations and demands for teacher education highlight the need to provide future teachers with more knowledge and to prepare teachers as expert collaborators who can learn from each other. This qualitative case study based on video-recorded reflective assignments investigated how Finnish pre-service special education teachers' experiences in relational interprofessional work within institutional boundary spaces -- the so-called knotworking -- contributed to the evolution of their professional agency. The results indicate that interprofessional collaboration during teacher education was challenging and orienting themselves as students was the principal way teachers negotiate their role within boundaries.

14. Multifaceted Investigation of Occupational Wellbeing Profiles among Guidance Counsellors

Abstract

Educational guidance counsellors' wellbeing at work was studied based on the circumplex model of occupational wellbeing. The main aim was to identify what kind of occupational wellbeing profiles (OWP) representing different levels and combinations of burnout, work engagement, workaholism and job satisfaction existed in this group. Data were collected via e-surveys in two separate samples: Sample 1 in 2019 (n = 211) and Sample 2 baseline in 2020 (n = 343) and follow-up in 2021 (n = 176). Latent profile analysis revealed altogether three OWPs: Satisfied-Engaged (68% in 2019, 53% in 2020, 56% in 2021), Workaholic-Engaged (28%, 42%, 33%) and Burned-out (4%, 5%, 11%). In addition, results concerning Sample 2 with a longitudinal design showed a decline in occupational well-being during the COVID-19.

25. Parents' Competence, Autonomy, and Relatedness in Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs in Emergency Remote Teaching during COVID-19 Lockdown

Abstract

Actions to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as emergency remote teaching (ERT), affected the lives of school children, their parents, and schooling in spring 2020. Rapid changes in routines due to lockdown and ERT were challenging, especially for many children with special needs (SEN). This article focuses on parents' perspectives regarding their basic psychological needs, i.e. competence, autonomy, and relatedness, in relation to the schooling of their children with SEN. Questionnaire data consisted of the views of 120 parents who described 179 resources and 151 challenges concerning their basic psychological needs during ERT of their children. Data were analysed following the principles of theoretical categorising. According to the results, parents experienced their pedagogical as well as intra- and interpersonal competence as resources to support the child in ERT. The greatest challenges concerned relatedness between parents and children as well as between parents, school, and other professionals. The study suggests schools and teachers to develop instructions to support teacher--parent interaction and learning of all children to cope with ongoing and future remote and face-to-face teaching for children with SEN.

26. Learning and Agency for Sustainability Transformations: Building on Bandura's Theory of Human Agency

Abstract

How to secure a sustainable future is currently one of the key challenges across society. Bandura's theory of human agency provides important insights into this question by recognising the role of individual, proxy and collective agency in initiating action and change. In this article, we conceptualise sustainability agency and discuss psychological features and competencies that are relevant for supporting agency in sustainability education. Agency may manifest in different forms and contexts: countless actions in individual lives, communities, and local, national and global scenes can contribute to sustainability. This range of opportunities to be engaged in sustainability transformations can be better acknowledged in sustainability education in formal, non-formal and informal learning settings by broadening and clarifying the targets and indicators of successful sustainability education. Consequently, sustainability education and related participation in advancing sustainability can become more inclusive and meaningful for actors with diverse backgrounds.

Abstract

Purpose: Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is increasingly important in work and workplace learning. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of IPC that are relevant for learning and developing at work. Design/methodology/approach: We examine IPC in the discussion data of health care professionals when designing, implementing and evaluating developmental tasks. Qualitative content analysis is carried out on temporally sequential task trajectories, considering IPC from the perspective of the objects and goals of IPC task activity in developmental efforts. Findings: The developmentally relevant characteristics of IPC are crystallized in the concepts of coordination, co-creation and community building, which play different, interdependent roles in development efforts. We show their interplay and how they complement each other in practice. Research limitations/implications: Our findings regarding IPC characteristics are to be interpreted as working hypotheses and resources for further research. Practical implications: Understanding the dynamics of IPC is useful for renewing work practices. Attention to the interplay and complementarity of IPC characteristics may help in the design and implementation of effective and sustained development efforts. Originality/value: The dynamics of IPC in developmental settings have not been sufficiently studied. This paper proposes three developmentally relevant and intertwined characteristics of IPC for scholars of workplace learning.

48. Student Teachers' Change Agency in Education for Sustainable Development

Abstract

Previous research shows that teachers are key players in supporting agency in the face of the biggest global challenges of our time, such as climate change and pollution, as teachers educate societies' future decision-makers. The aim of this study was to analyze student teachers' perceptions of change agency and sustainable development. In this qualitative case study, the writings of student teachers (n = 116) were studied in the context of sustainable development education. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings of the research confirmed previous studies showing that student teachers' perceptions of sustainable development were quite narrow. The results indicated that the student teachers wrote mainly about social dimensions of sustainable development; few of them considered economic or environmental dimensions of sustainable development. The results provided new information about the current state of student teachers' perceptions of change agency in the teacher education context. Teacher education should focus more on a holistic view of sustainable development aspects. These findings might be useful in implementing teacher education curricula.
