Contribution: A novel proactive and collaborative learning paradigm was proposed to engage learners with different backgrounds and enable effective retention and transfer of the multidisciplinary artificial intelligence (AI)-cybersecurity knowledge. Specifically, the proposed learning paradigm contains: 1) an immersive learning environment to motivate the students for exploring AI/ machine learning (ML) development in the context of real-world cybersecurity scenarios by constructing learning models with tangible objects and 2) a proactive education paradigm designed with the use of collaborative learning activities based on game-based learning and social constructivism. Background: Increasing evidence shows that AI techniques can be manipulated, evaded, and misled, which can result in new and profound security implications. There is an education and training gap to foster a qualified cyber-workforce that understands the usefulness, limitations, and best practices of AI technologies in the cybersecurity domain. Efforts have been made to incorporate a comprehensive curriculum to meet the demand. There still remain essential challenges for effectively educating students on the interaction of AI and cybersecurity. Intended Outcomes: A novel proactive and collaborative learning paradigm is proposed to educate and train a qualified cyber-workforce in this new era where security breaches, privacy violations, and AI have become commonplace. Application Design: The development of this learning paradigm is grounded in the pedagogical approaches of technology-mediated learning and social constructivism. Findings: Although the research work is still ongoing, the prototype learning paradigm has shown encouraging results in promoting the learners' engagement in applied AI learning.

Abstract In this study delafloxacin resistance mechanisms in Escherichia coli strains were analyzed. Delafloxacin is a new fluoroquinolone, that is approved for clinical application however, resistance against this agent is scarcely reported. In our study 37 E. coli strains were included and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed for ciprofloxacin, delafloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, ceftazidime, cefotaxime, imipenem. Six delafloxacin resistant E. coli strains were selected for whole-genome sequencing and all of them exhibited resistance to other fluoroquinonlones and showed an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase phenotype. The six delafloxacin resistant E. coli strains belonged to different sequence types (STs) namely, ST131 (2 strains), ST57 (2 strains), ST162 and ST15840. Each delafloxacin resistant strain possessed multiple mutations in quinolone resistance-determining regions (QRDRs). Notably, three mutations in gyrA Ser83Leu, Asp87Asn and parC Ser80Ile were in strains of ST162, ST57 and ST15840. However, the two strains of ST131 carried five combined mutations namely, gyrA Ser83Leu, Asp87Asn, parC Ser80Ile, Glu84Val, parE Ile549Leu. Association of delafloxacin resistance and production of CTX-M-15 in ST131, CMY-2 in ST162 and ST15840 was detected. In this study a new ST, ST15840 of clonal complex 69 was identified. Our results demonstrate, that at least three mutations in QRDRs are required for delafloxacin resistance in E. coli.

In engineering, DIC is a widely used measurement technique. Its major advantage is that it provides real-time results (displacements, accelerations, stresses, strains, deformations) of the surface under examination relatively quickly and without contact. However, its application in medicine, biomechanics, and the field of criminalistics is novel. The present research focuses mainly on the frontier areas of forensics and medicine. The research aims to define the test boundary conditions and preparatory activities to measure the surface of the animal and then human skin. Injuries caused by low-energy ballistic bullets, blunt-force trauma, and cuts and punctures caused by knives and/or blades will be investigated. The present research focuses on puncture injuries in animal skin. The main challenge is to create a speckle pattern on the surface that can track deformation well. The research is about developing and validating this. The GOM ARAMIS measurement system was applied for the measurements. This paper demonstrates that a suitable preparation, painting procedure, and measurement setup has been established to measure the above effects, i.e., to identify displacements and deformations of up to tenths of a millimeter with sufficient accuracy. The evaluation of the results will also show that this method could be used in forensic applications, the automotive industry, medical orthopedics, and the textile industry.

How important are learning strategies or personal attributes for learning outside of domain-specific knowledge or twenty-first-century transversal skills when predicting academic success in higher education? To address this question, we conducted a longitudinal study among 1,681 students at one of the leading universities in Hungary. Students took four tests and questionnaires when they entered the university. They measured knowledge from their previous studies (reading and mathematics), twenty-first-century skills like problem-solving and non-cognitive variables in learning strategies, motivation and attitudes. In the next five years, we followed their academic progress with the aim of detecting cognitive and non-cognitive predictors of academic success toward obtaining a degree and developing training programmes for the most important predictors to boost the probability of academic success. The overarching model, which was controlled for students' socio-economic background, determined 18.4% of the variance in later academic success. Domain-specific knowledge from previous studies and learning motivation emerged as the strongest predictor, learning strategies proved to be the most stable of the other mediating factors as an independent predictor, and twenty-first-century transversal skills proved to be unimportant in earning a university degree. Results highlight the importance of transforming higher education so that it is consistent with the expectations of the twenty-first-century labour market, a future-fit education in Hungary.

The buckling and post-buckling behavior of a nonlinear discrete repetitive system, the discrete elastica, is studied herein. The nonlinearity essentially comes from the geometrical effect, whereas the constitutive law of each component is reduced to linear elasticity. The paper primarily focuses on the relevancy of higher-order continuum approximations of the difference equations, also called continualization of the lattice model. The pseudo-differential operator of the lattice equations are expanded by Taylor series, up to the second or the fourth-order, leading to an equivalent second-order or fourth-order gradient elasticity model. The accuracy of each of these models is compared to the initial lattice model and to some other approximation methods based on a rational expansion of the pseudo-differential operator. It is found, as anticipated, that the higher level of truncation is chosen, the better accuracy is obtained with respect to the lattice solution. This paper also outlines the key role played by the boundary conditions, which also need to be consistently continualized from their discrete expressions. It is concluded that higher-order gradient elasticity models can efficiently capture the scale effects of lattice models.

Abstract Background Working memory (WM) impairment is a common phenomenon after stroke; however, its management in rehabilitation is less researched. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to provide a quantitative synthesis of the impact of computerised cognitive training (CCT) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on WM span in post-stroke individuals. Methods The literature search in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library focused on randomized controlled trials testing the effect of CCT and tDCS on treated stroke patients as compared to untreated controls. Neuropsychological instruments such as Digit Span Forward/Backward and Visual Span Forward Tests defined the outcome of WM span. After extracting study characteristics and quality assessment using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool, we conducted a meta-analysis and meta-regression using standardised mean differences. Results The search yielded 4142 articles, nine of which (N = 461) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. In the case of CCT, we found significant improvement in Digit Span Backward Test (Z = 2.65, P = 0.008; 95% CI [0.10, 0.67]) and Visual Span Forward Test performance (Z = 3.05, P = 0.002; 95% CI [0.15, 0.69]), while for tDCS, we could not find a sufficient number of studies for the analysis. Furthermore, no significant moderating factor was found in the meta-regression. Conclusions In conclusion, CCT appears to be a suitable choice to enhance WM span performance after stroke. However, further research is needed to investigate the effect of tDCS due to the limited number of studies. Trial registration The meta-analysis was conducted according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) standards with a PROSPERO registration protocol (ID: CRD42023387182).

Abstract Background Migraine has been associated with functional brain changes including altered connectivity and activity both during and between headache attacks. Recent studies established that the variability of the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal is an important attribute of brain activity, which has so far been understudied in migraine. In this study, we investigate how time-varying measures of BOLD variability change interictally in episodic migraine patients. Methods Two independent resting state functional MRI datasets acquired on 3T (discovery cohort) and 1.5T MRI scanners (replication cohort) including 99 episodic migraine patients (n3T = 42, n1.5T=57) and 78 healthy controls (n3T = 46, n1.5T=32) were analyzed in this cross-sectional study. A framework using time-varying measures of BOLD variability was applied to derive BOLD variability states. Descriptors of BOLD variability states such as dwell time and fractional occupancy were calculated, then compared between migraine patients and healthy controls using Mann-Whitney U-tests. Spearman’s rank correlation was calculated to test associations with clinical parameters. Results Resting-state activity was characterized by states of high and low BOLD signal variability. Migraine patients in the discovery cohort spent more time in the low variability state (mean dwell time: p = 0.014, median dwell time: p = 0.022, maximum dwell time: p = 0.013, fractional occupancy: p = 0.013) and less time in the high variability state (mean dwell time: p = 0.021, median dwell time: p = 0.021, maximum dwell time: p = 0.025, fractional occupancy: p = 0.013). Higher uptime of the low variability state was associated with greater disability as measured by MIDAS scores (maximum dwell time: R = 0.45, p = 0.007; fractional occupancy: R = 0.36, p = 0.035). Similar results were observed in the replication cohort. Conclusion Episodic migraine patients spend more time in a state of low BOLD variability during rest in headache-free periods, which is associated with greater disability. BOLD variability states show potential as a replicable functional imaging marker in episodic migraine.

Abstract Today, antibiotic therapies that previously worked well against certain bacteria due to their natural sensitivity, are becoming less effective. Honey has been proven to inhibit the biofilm formation of some respiratory bacteria, however few data are available on how the storage time affects the antibacterial effect. The activity of black locust, goldenrod, linden and sunflower honeys from three consecutive years (2020, 2021, 2022) was analyzed in 2022 against Gram-negative (Haemophilus influenzae, H. parainfluenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive (Streptococcus pneumoniae) bacteria using in vitro microbiological methods. After determining the physicochemical parameters of honey, broth microdilution was applied to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of each honey type against each bacterium, and crystal violet assay was used to test their antibiofilm effect. The possible mechanism of action was explored with membrane degradation test, while structural changes were illustrated with scanning electron microscopy. Honeys stored for one or two years were darker than fresh honeys, while older honeys had significantly lower antibacterial activity. The most remarkable inhibitory effect was exerted by linden and sunflower honeys, and P. aeruginosa proved to be the most resistant bacterium. Based on our results, honey intended for medicinal purposes should be used as fresh as possible during a treatment.

The high dropout ratios that characterize STEM fields can be explained by several factors, one of which is the employment of students during their studies. Our research aims to explore the impact of student employment on persistence and academic performance in STEM fields. During our research, we used the data of the Hungarian subsample of the PERSIST 2019 database (N=1045). According to our results, IT trainings are more resistant to the negative effects of employment than other trainings, as students working in this field did not differ from their non-employed peers in terms of either persistence or academic progress. Concerning the science, engineering, and non-STEM training, employment had a significant negative effect on academic performance, but it was primarily compensated by being employed in study-related jobs in science training, which also had a favorable effect in non-STEM training courses. However, in the field of engineering, employment in the profession reinforced this adverse effect too. In the field of informatics, study-related work also had a negative impact. Based on our results, we think it is worth considering the broader spread of dual training courses in higher education, during which students can complete an internship at a company or partner organization in addition to theoretical training.

Based on several field investigations, many molluscan shells and chondrichthyan teeth, together with other invertebrate and actinopterygian remains were found from the marine Bangkok Clay deposits in Ongkharak, Nakhon Nayok, at a depth of ~ 5–7 m below the topsoil surface. Animal macrofossils recovered from these Holocene marine deposits were identified and their chronological context was investigated in order to reconstruct the paleoenvironments of the area at that time. The majority of marine fossils recovered from the site consist of molluscs, with a total of 63 species identified. Other invertebrate species include a stony coral, a mud lobster, barnacles, and a sea urchin. The vertebrates are represented by fish remains, including carcharhinid shark teeth from at least nine species, stingray and trichiurid teeth, and one sciaenid otolith. The molluscan fauna indicates that the paleoenvironments of the area corresponded to intertidal to sublittoral zones, where some areas were mangrove forests and intertidal mudflats. The fish fauna is dominated by the river shark Glyphis, indicating freshwater influences and possibly occasional brackish conditions. The carbon-14 analysis of mollusc and charcoal remains shows that deposition of the marine sediment sequence began during the mid-Holocene, spanning approximately from 8,800 to 5,300 cal yr BP. This study provides in-depth insights into the diversity of fishes, marine molluscs, and other invertebrates from the Bangkok Clay deposits, supporting the existence of a marine transgression onto the Lower Central Plain of Thailand during the mid-Holocene.

The Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO) is a global warming event mainly recognized in the marine domain and described less in the terrestrial environment. Here we present a comprehensive geochemical record of the MECO from the Escanilla Formation, a fluvial sedimentary succession in the southern Pyrenees, Spain, based on a suite of sampled paleosols, fluvial stromatolites, and pedogenic nodules. Our multiproxy approach involves using carbon and oxygen stable isotope compositions to identify the regional preservation of the MECO, calculate chemical weathering intensity and mean annual precipitation, perform clumped isotopes on carbonates, and identify clay mineralogy assemblages of paleosols. Results indicate that the Middle Eocene interval in the southern Pyrenees was characterized by low weathering rates under warm and arid climatic conditions. This is further supported by the presence of smectite, palygorskite, illite, and chlorite, which suggest seasonal rainfall but under generally dry conditions resulting in weak chemical weathering. Importantly, a negative organic carbon isotopic excursion indicates the regional, terrestrial impact of the MECO, highlighting that fluvial sedimentary successions even in active foreland basins can represent particularly interesting terrestrial archives of past changes in global climate.

The eradication of bacterial biofilms remains a persistent challenge in medicine, particularly because an increasing number of biofilms exhibit resistance to conventional antibiotics. This underscores the importance of searching for novel compounds that present antibacterial and biofilm inhibition activity. Various types of honey and essential oil were proven to be effective against a number of biofilm-forming bacterial strains. The current study demonstrated the effectiveness of the relatively unexplored fennel honey (FH), fennel essential oil (FEO), and their combination against biofilm-forming bacterial strains Pseudomonas aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli, with a series of in vitro experiments. The authenticity of FH and FEO was checked with light microscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, respectively. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined using the microdilution method, and antibiofilm activity was assessed with crystal violet assay. Structural changes in bacterial cells and biofilms, induced by the treatments, were monitored with scanning electron microscopy. FEO and FH inhibited the biofilm formation of each bacterial strain, with FEO being more effective compared to FH. Their combination was the most effective, with inhibitory rates ranging between 87 and 92%, depending on the bacterial strain. The most sensitive bacterium was E. coli, while P. aeruginosa was the most resistant. These results provide justification for the combined use of honey and essential oil to suppress bacterial biofilms and can serve as a starting point to develop an effective surface disinfectant with natural ingredients.

Clinical and preclinical evidence has demonstrated an increased risk for neuropsychiatric disorders following prenatal cannabinoid exposure. However, given the phytochemical complexity of cannabis, there is a need to understand how specific components of cannabis may contribute to these neurodevelopmental risks later in life. To investigate this, a rat model of prenatal cannabinoid exposure was utilized to examine the impacts of specific cannabis constituents (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol [THC]; cannabidiol [CBD]) alone and in combination on future neuropsychiatric liability in male and female offspring. Prenatal THC and CBD exposure were associated with low birth weight. At adolescence, offspring displayed sex-specific behavioural changes in anxiety, temporal order and social cognition, and sensorimotor gating. These phenotypes were associated with sex and treatment-specific neuronal and gene transcriptional alterations in the prefrontal cortex, and ventral hippocampus, regions where the endocannabinoid system is implicated in affective and cognitive development. Electrophysiology and RT-qPCR analysis in these regions implicated dysregulation of the endocannabinoid system and balance of excitatory and inhibitory signalling in the developmental consequences of prenatal cannabinoids. These findings reveal critical insights into how specific cannabinoids can differentially impact the developing fetal brains of males and females to enhance subsequent neuropsychiatric risk.

The aim of the research is to examine student employment, which plays an important role in the lives of university students. According to previous research results, paid work is characterized by an increasing tendency, with occasional and holiday work being characteristic of students, as well as regular work during the semester too. Current research focuses on the characteristics of gainful employment in the Hungarian-Romanian border region. The database PERSIST 2019 (N = 2199) was used, the research took place in higher education institutions in the eastern region of Hungary and in higher education institutions bordering the country. We investigate the differences between the demographic, social and institutional backgrounds of working students. We also analyze the relationships between effectiveness, engagement and student employment. According to our results there are differences between the institutions both in the frequency of employment and in the horizontal fit of work. Hungarian students take up work more often than Romanian students, but study-related work is more typical for Romanian students. However, paid work does not hinder the academic performance of the students and the building of relationships within the institution, it even has a positive impact on the students' university career.

The goal of the present paper is to investigate whether any objectively defined and statistically significant changes can be discovered in one of the longest homogenized instrumental temperature records in East-Central Europe. Thus, it is hoped that the present analysis will add to earlier attempts and elucidate the persistence of the warming period observed in the early 20th century. Similar to the global tendency, the Early Twentieth Century Warming (hereinafter, ETCW) period can be identified between 1931 and 1951 in the annual mean temperature time series of Keszthely, a small town in Hungary. The Mann-Kendall trend test was used to determine whether a monotonic trend was present, as it is not possible to regard the residuals of the linear trend as normally distributed. A significant rising trend can be observed in the warming period in spring of the years between 1925 and 1951. In case of summer and autumn, this period cannot be characterized as having any significant identifiable trend. A rise in the mean can, however, be recognized. Overall, the specific regional manifestation of the global ETCW may clearly be illustrated in this study via detailed statistical analysis of the temperature records for Keszthely, a location with one of the longest temperature records in Hungary. However, other regions surrounding Hungary show similar climatic trends, emphasizing the fact that the behaviour presented here is not unique to Central and Eastern Europe.

Abstract Fatty acids (FAs) play important roles as membrane components and signal transduction molecules. Changes in short chain FA (SCFA) composition are associated with gut microbiota modifications. However, the effect of bacteria-driven changes on the detailed FA spectrum has not been explored yet. We investigated the effect of antibiotics (ABx) and/or probiotics, in four treatment groups on rat stool FA composition. Principal component analysis indicated that the chromatogram profiles of the treatment groups differ, which was also observed at different time points. Linear mixed effects models showed that in the parameters compared (sampling times, treatments. and their interactions), both the weight percentage and the concentration of FAs were affected by ABx and probiotic administration. This study found that the gut microbiome defines trans and branched saturated FAs, most saturated FAs, and unsaturated FAs with less carbon atoms. These results are among the first ones to demonstrate the restoring effects of a probiotic mixture on a substantial part of the altered total FA spectrum, and also revealed a previously unknown relationship between gut bacteria and a larger group of FAs. These findings suggest that intestinal bacteria produce not only SCFAs but also other FAs that may affect the host’s physiological processes.

Abstract The report of a half-quantized thermal Hall effect and oscillatory structures in the magnetothermal conductivity in the Kitaev material α-RuCl3 have sparked a strong debate on whether it is generated by Majorana fermion edge currents, spinon Fermi surface, or whether other more conventional mechanisms are at its origin. Here, we report low temperature thermal conductivity (κ) of another candidate Kitaev material, Na2Co2TeO6. The application of a magnetic field (B) along different principal axes of the crystal reveals a strong directional-dependent B impact on κ, while no evidence for mobile quasiparticles except phonons can be concluded at any field. Instead, severely scattered phonon transport prevails across the B−T phase diagram, revealing cascades of phase transitions for all B directions. Our results thus cast doubt on recent proposals for significant itinerant magnetic excitations in Na2Co2TeO6, and emphasize the importance of discriminating true spin liquid transport properties from scattered phonons in candidate materials.

Since the introduction of 3D mapping systems, the use of x-rays in electrophysiology procedures has significantly decreased. The goal of this study was to analyze the frequency of x-ray use in pediatric electrophysiology in relation to age or body mass, indication for the procedure, and arrhythmia substrate. Th is retrospective, cross-sectional study included all pediatric procedures in two centers, Gottsegen Cardiovascular Center, Budapest, Hungary and Sestre milosrdnice University Hospital Center, Zagreb, Croatia. Patient data included weight, age, sex, presence of structural heart disease, indication for the electrophysiology study, arrhythmia substrate, and x-ray use. A total of 914 participants were analyzed, mean age 13.25 years and mean mass 53.20 kg. Of all procedures, 62.04% were performed without and 37.96% with fluoroscopy. Th ere were no statistically significant differences in the frequency of x-ray use when comparing the groups by sex (p=0.181), age (p=0.380) or mass (p=0.120). Deterministic and stochastic models play an important role in engineering, economics, and the natural sciences. Despite this, the development of stochastic modelling skills in engineering students is less emphasized, and this part of modelling knowledge is less well founded in secondary education. The concept of sustainable education is based on the idea that education is driven by the implication and energy of the students and teachers and their natural energy for learning is continuously renewed. In this article, we describe an approach that uses simple tools to highlight the role and importance of the stochastic approach in engineering and also serves as a model for developing application skills that equip learners with the knowledge and values needed to build a more sustainable and resilient future for all.

The execute-order-validate approach to blockchain consensus, most notably implemented by Hyperledger Fabric, facilitates highly scalable execution of smart contract – in Fabric terminology, “chaincode” – invocations in cross-organizational blockchains; at the expense of requiring multi-version concurrency control conflict handling during block validation. Consequently, the system-level goodput can be significantly lower than throughput. Although several solutions have been proposed for handling and avoiding conflicts in Hyperledger Fabric, a systematic and holistic approach is missing. We introduce the notion of conflict-controlled operation, propose a novel taxonomy of its means based on the codified principles of dependable computing, and categorize the known approaches. Based on this taxonomy, we identified the critical gaps in the state-of-the-art. Design-time conflict prevention is one such gap, and we propose the application of a model-driven engineering process for this purpose. For the last storage mapping stage of the process, we propose entity attribute partitioning for conflict prevention, describe a data mapper-style chaincode layer, and empirically evaluate our solution.

Abstract Freshwater lakes in most inhabited areas of the world are threatened by water quality issues. Standard water conservation measures have shown efficiency in the past; however, polluted lakes have only partially recovered from eutrophication. Our knowledge is still incomplete about the sensitivity of these lakes to different anthropogenic sources and to the changes in their internal processes due to global warming. In this article, we present a database comprising sediment data from Lake Balaton (Hungary), which can facilitate further analysis helping to better understand the internal processes and changes occurring in the lake. The published dataset includes the following parameters measured in 4211 lake bed sediment samples: pHKCl, calcium carbonate (CaCO3), organic carbon (Corg), total nitrogen (Ntotal), soluble phosphorus (AL-P2O5) and soluble potassium (AL-K2O), magnesium (Mg2+), zinc (Zn2+), copper (Cu2+) and manganese (Mn2+). We are confident that our database serves as a strong basis for further research relating to freshwater lakes influenced by human activities.

Abstract Background Burnout is still one of the leading mental health problems. According to research results over the past decades, healthcare workers, including paramedics, are considered a high-risk group. In concordance with these results, the available resources need to prioritize monitoring paramedics’ mental health. Methods In our study, we investigated whether the available test batteries measuring burnout could be reduced while maintaining their effectiveness. We reduced the 21-item Burnout Measurement and the 8-item version of the Psychosomatic Symptom Scale using the data of 727 Hungarian paramedics. We selected the top four items of the questionnaires that were significantly correlated with the original Burnout Measure Index and the Psychosomatic Scale Index. The classification efficiency of the shortened list of items was based on the initial risk categories of the Burnout Measure and its sensitivity was analyzed using Binary Logistic regression and ROC curves. We then used Two-Step Cluster Analysis to test the ability of the shortened Burnout Measure Index to develop new risk categories. The reliability indicators were also explored. Results The results show that the Burnout Measurement can be reduced to 4 items with a classification efficiency of 93.5% in determining the level of burnout. The 5-item reduction of the Psychosomatic Symptom Scale can classify subjects to the appropriate intervention level for burnout with an efficiency of 81.6%. The ROC analysis suggests that the shortened questionnaires have an excellent separative ability to discriminate between the initial risk groups. Three new risk categories were also identified as a result of the cluster analysis. Conclusion The shortened scales may be proven effective in resource management, which could significantly quicken the assessment of burnout in the future. The abbreviated scale is also suitable for classifying subjects into risk categories. However, further research is needed to see whether the shortened scales can be used as a diagnostic tool.
