In the present work, the properties of Al2O3 nanocomposite prepared via spark-plasma sintering and reinforced with 0.5-2 wt % graphene are studied. Samples with different graphene contents are subjected to measurements of density, microhardness, coefficient of friction of composite-ruby, and frictional wear rate of composite. The fracture and wear track surface are inspected via fractography, and the composite as a whole is examined via X-ray diffraction. The graphene additive is established to increase the microhardness and to decrease the frictional wear rate by two orders of magnitude on account of absence of flaking of grains. Al2O3-13%TiO2 coatings were deposited on stainless steel substrates from conventional and nanostructured powders using atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). A complete characterization of the feedstock confirmed its nanostructured nature. Coating microstructures and phase compositions were characterized using SEM, TEM, and XRD techniques. The microstructure comprised two clearly differentiated regions. One region, completely fused, consisted mainly of nanometer-sized grains of γ-Al2O3 with dissolved Ti+4. The other region, partly fused, retained the microstructure of the starting powder and was principally made up of submicrometer-sized grains of α-Al2O3, as confirmed by TEM. Coating microhardness as well as tribological behavior were determined. Vickers microhardness values of conventional coatings were in average slightly lower than the values for nanostructured coating. The wear resistance of conventional coatings was shown to be lower than that of nanostructured coatings as a consequence of Ti segregation. A correlation between the final properties, the coating microstructure, and the feedstock characteristics is given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The simple oxides like titania, zirconia, and ZnO are famous with their antibacterial (or even antimicrobial) properties as well as their biocompatibility. They are broadly used for air and water filtering, in food packaging, in medicine (for implants, prostheses, and scaffolds), etc. However, these application fields can be broadened by switching to the composite multicomponent compounds (for example, titanates) containing in their unit cell, together with oxygen, several different metallic ions. This review begins with a description of the synthesis methods, starting from wet chemical conversion through the manufacturing of oxide (nano)powders toward mechanosynthesis methods. The morphology of these multicomponent oxides can also be very different (like thin films, complicated multilayers, or porous scaffolds). Further, we discuss in vitro tests. The antimicrobial properties are investigated with Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria (like Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus ) or fungi. The cytotoxicity can be studied, for example, using mouse mesenchymal stem cells, MSCs (C3H10T1/2), or human osteoblast-like cells (MG63). Other human osteoblast-like cells (SaOS-2) can be used to characterize the cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation in vitro. The in vitro tests with individual microbial or cell cultures are rather far away from the real conditions in the human or animal body. Therefore, they have to be followed by in vivo tests, which permit the estimation of the real applicability of novel materials. Further, we discuss the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms determining the antimicrobial properties and biocompatibility. TiNbZrTa alloys are promising for multidisciplinary applications, such as refractory and biomedical purposes, due to their high thermal stability and non-toxicity. Hardness and elastic modulus are among the key features for their adequate industrial applications. The influence of porosity and Ti/Ta ratio were investigated on TiNbZrTa alloys produced by three different processing routes, i.e., (i) blend element and posterior press and sintering (BE + P&S); (ii) mechanical alloying with press and sintering (MA + P&S); and (iii) arc melting and casting. Porosity decreased in the following order: casting < MA + P&S < BE + P&S. The total porosity of alloys increased with increasing Ta contents, i.e., by lowering the Ti/Ta ratio. However, the Ti/Ta ratio did not considerably affect the bonding energy or the elastic modulus. Hardness was increased significantly in dense alloys compared to porous ones. However, porosity and Ti/Ta ratio did not show a clear trend in hardness among the porous alloys.

Multilayered structures are a promising route to tailor electronic, magnetic, optical, and/or mechanical properties and durability of functional materials. Sputter deposition at room temperature, being an out-of-equilibrium process, introduces structural defects and confers to these nanosystems an intrinsic thermodynamical instability. As-deposited materials exhibit a large amount of internal atomic displacements within each constituent block as well as severe interface roughness between different layers. To access and characterize the internal multilayer disorder and its thermal evolution, X-ray diffraction investigation and analysis are performed systematically at differently grown Ag-Ge/aluminum nitride (AlN) multilayers (co-deposited, sequentially deposited with and without radio frequency (RF) bias) samples and after high-temperature annealing treatment. We report here on model calculations based on a kinematic formalism describing the displacement disorder both within the multilayer blocks and at the interfaces to reproduce the experimental X-ray diffraction intensities. Mixing and displacements at the interface are found to be considerably reduced after thermal treatment for co- and sequentially deposited Ag-Ge/AlN samples. The application of a RF bias during the deposition causes the highest interface mixing and introduces random intercalates in the AlN layers. X-ray analysis is contrasted to transmission electron microscopy pictures to validate the approach.
