Chinese children routinely outperform American peers in standardized tests of mathematics knowledge. To examine mediators of this effect, 95 Chinese and US 5-year-olds completed a test of overall symbolic arithmetic, an IQ subtest, and three tests each of symbolic and non-symbolic numerical magnitude knowledge (magnitude comparison, approximate addition, and number-line estimation). Overall Chinese children performed better in symbolic arithmetic than US children, and all measures of IQ and number knowledge predicted overall symbolic arithmetic. Chinese children were more accurate than US peers in symbolic numerical magnitude comparison, symbolic approximate addition, and both symbolic and non-symbolic number-line estimation; Chinese and U.S. children did not differ in IQ and non-symbolic magnitude comparison and approximate addition. A substantial amount of the nationality difference in overall symbolic arithmetic was mediated by performance on the symbolic and number-line tests.

Children display an early sensitivity to implicit proportions (e.g., 1 of 5 apples vs. 3 of 4 apples), but have considerable difficulty in learning the explicit, symbolic proportions denoted by fractions (e.g., "1/5" vs. "3/4"). Theoretically, reducing the gap between representations of implicit versus explicit proportions would improve understanding of fractions, but little is known about how the representations develop and interact with one another. To address this, we asked 177 third, fourth, and fifth graders (M = 9.85 years, 87 girls, 69% White, 19% low income) to estimate the position of proportionally equivalent integers and fractions on number lines (e.g., 3 on a 0-8 number line vs. 3/8 on a 0-1 number line, Study 1). With increasing age, children's estimates of implicit and explicit proportions became more coherent, such that a child's estimates of fractions on a 0-1 number-line was a linear function of the same child's estimates of equivalent integers. To further investigate whether preexisting integer knowledge can facilitate fraction learning through analogy, we assigned 100 third to fifth graders (M = 10.04 years, 55 girls, 76% White) to an Alignment condition, where children estimated fractions and integers on aligned number lines, or to a No Alignment condition (Study 2). Results showed that aligning integers and fractions on number lines facilitated a better understanding of fractional magnitudes, and increased children's fraction estimation accuracy to the level of college students'. Together, findings suggest that analogies can play an important role in building a coherent understanding of proportions.

Memory for numbers improves with age. One source of this improvement may be learning linear spatial-numeric associations, but previous evidence for this hypothesis likely confounded memory span with quality of numerical magnitude representations and failed to distinguish spatial-numeric mappings from other numeric abilities, such as counting or number word-cardinality mapping. To obviate the influence of memory span on numerical memory, we examined 39 3- to 5-year-olds' ability to recall one spontaneously produced number (1-20) after a delay, and the relation between numeric recall (controlling for non-numeric recall) and quality of mapping between symbolic and non-symbolic quantities using number-line estimation, give-a-number estimation, and counting tasks. Consistent with previous reports, mapping of numerals to space, to discrete quantities, and to numbers in memory displayed a logarithmic-to-linear shift. Also, linearity of spatial-numeric mapping correlated strongly with multiple measures of numeric recall (percent correct and percent absolute error), even when controlling for age and non-numeric memory. Results suggest that linear spatial-numeric mappings may aid memory for number over and above children's other numeric skills.

Impairment in the psychological balance between autonomy and connectedness--referred to as dysfunctional individuation--can interfere with wellbeing and contribute to mental health difficulties. Dysfunctional individuation may reflect problems in earlier parent-child relations, and may account for the relationship between such experiences and psychological distress. However, the prominence of dysfunctional individuation emergent from parental responsiveness, and its link with distress symptoms, may differ according to age and gender. The present study examined associations between perceived parental support, psychological distress, and dysfunctional individuation--including the mediating effect of the latter--among outpatients seeking mental health care. Moderation by age and gender was also examined. A sample of 219 patients completed study assessments. Correlations and conditional process modelling examined associations, including indirect effects of parental responsiveness, with moderation by age and gender, on psychological distress through dysfunctional individuation as a mediator. A significant three-way interaction was observed between perceived parental responsiveness, age, and gender in relation to dysfunctional individuation. Examination of mediation revealed significant moderated moderated mediation, in that the indirect effects of parental responsiveness--through dysfunctional individuation--were significant for younger women and older men. These findings indicated conditional age and gender effects on the role of dysfunctional individuation in mediating perceived early parental responsiveness and psychological distress. Thus, dysfunctional individuation may be a salient clinical concern among patients--particularly younger women and older men--with histories of diminished parental responsiveness. As a cheaper alternative to the industrial Pt electrode used in quantum-sensitized solar cells, the electrophoresis process is employed to create the low-cost FTO/PbS cathode. For structural cubic and sizes ranging from 40 nm to 200 nm, structure and morphology were investigated using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The conversion efficiency of solar cells is significantly impacted by the calcination temperatures of cathodes at 100 ℃, 150 ℃, 200 ℃, and 300 ℃ under vacuum. The FTO/PbS cathode electrode was therefore calcined at 150 ℃ with a maximum efficiency of 3.938%. This happens as a result of the complete fusion of PbS nanoparticles with crystal at 150 ℃, which reduces resistance and increases electron lifetime compared to other temperature combinations.

Young children's estimates of numerical magnitude increase approximately logarithmically with actual magnitude. The conventional interpretation of this finding is that children's estimates reflect an innate logarithmic encoding of number. A recent set of findings, however, suggests that logarithmic number-line estimates emerge via a dynamic encoding mechanism that is sensitive to previously encountered stimuli. Here we examine trial-to-trial changes in logarithmicity of numerosity estimates to test an alternative dynamic model (D-MLLM) with both a strong logarithmic component and a weak response to previous stimuli. In support of D-MLLM, first-trial numerosity estimates in both adults (Study 1, 2, 3, and 4) and children (Study 4) were strongly logarithmic, despite zero previous stimuli. Additionally, although numerosity of a previous trial affected adults' estimates, the influence of previous numbers always accompanied the logarithmic-to-linear shift predicted by D-MLLM. We conclude that a dynamic encoding mechanism is not necessary for compressive mapping, but sequential effects on response scaling are a possible source of linearity in adults' numerosity estimation.

Mycotoxins occur singly or as co-contaminants and are primarily present in carbohydrate-rich foods such as cereals and cereal-based products. To effectively monitor mycotoxin co-contamination in cereals and cereal-based products, the simultaneous analysis of mycotoxins and their derivatives is required. Therefore, we coupled cleanup with LC-MS/MS for the rapid and robust quantitation of 35 analytes in wheat samples, including ergot alkaloids (EAs), which are rarely included in such analyses. To investigate the effects of different mycotoxin types on adsorbents, various dispersive solid-phase extraction sorbents were evaluated; a C18 end-capped sorbent exhibited the most effective cleanup performance. The method was validated by analyzing samples fortified with the mycotoxins at three concentration levels. The results exhibited high linearity, high recoveries, and repeatability. The methodology was applied for commercial cereal samples. The cereal samples were found to be 74% contaminated, and two samples measured levels of EAs at 609.63 μg/kg and 294.93 μg/kg, exceeding the limits defined by the EU for rye milling products. These findings highlight the validity of our novel method and the necessity of continuously monitoring mycotoxin levels in cereals to ensure food safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Despite conflicting findings on the association between socioeconomic status and drinking, little is known about the impact of deprivation as a measure of inequality on alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Methods We used the Korea Welfare Panel Study, a longitudinal survey conducted from 2012 to 2022, and included 1569 Korean adult participants. Deprivation (at least one including food, housing, medical, educational, and credit deprivation) was measured by self-report and divided into four categories according to the change in deprivation experience from the previous year to the following year. AUD was measured using the Korean version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test scale. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals and adjusted for confounders. Results Among 1569 participants, worsened deprivation and consistent deprivation were positively associated with AUD compared to non-deprivation. In particular, worsened deprivation was more likely to be associated with AUD in participants with low household income, high school education level, and economic activity. Conclusion We found that worsened deprivation and consistent deprivation were associated with AUD. Deprivation should be considered as a health policy intervention to improve drinking problems. Patients with unstable angina present clinical characteristics of atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability, contrary to chronic coronary syndrome patients. The process of athersclerotic plaque destabilization is also regulated by microRNA particles. In this study, the investigation on expression levels of microRNAs inhibiting the expression of proteins that protect from atherosclerotic plaque progression (miR-92a inhibiting KLF2, miR-10b inhibiting KLF4, miR-126 inhibiting MerTK, miR-98 inhibiting IL-10, miR-29b inhibiting TGFβ1) was undertaken. A number of 62 individuals were enrolled—unstable angina (UA, n = 14), chronic coronary syndrome (CCS, n = 38), and healthy volunteers (HV, n = 10). Plasma samples were taken, and microRNAs expression levels were assessed by qRT-PCR. As a result, the UA patients presented significantly increased miR-10b levels compared to CCS patients (0.097 vs. 0.058, p = 0.033). Moreover, in additional analysis when UA patients were grouped together with stable patients with significant plaque in left main or proximal left anterior descending ("UA and LM/proxLAD" group, n = 29 patients) and compared to CCS patients with atherosclerotic lesions in other regions of coronary circulation ("CCS other" group, n = 25 patients) the expression levels of both miR-10b (0.104 vs. 0.046; p = 0.0032) and miR-92a (92.64 vs. 54.74; p = 0.0129) were significantly elevated. In conclusion, the study revealed significantly increased expression levels of miR-10b and miR-92a, a regulator of endothelial protective KLF factors (KLF4 and KLF2, respectively) in patients with more vulnerable plaque phenotypes. A three-dimensional large eddy simulation model is used to simulate the turbulent flow dynamics around a circular pier in live-bed and clear-water scour conditions. The Navier–Stokes equations are transformed into a σ-coordinate system and solved using a second-order unstructured triangular finite-volume method. We simulate the bed evolution by solving the Exner-Polya equation assisted by a sand-slide model as a correction method. The bedload transport rate is based on the model of Engelund and Fredsœ. The model was validated for live-bed conditions in a wide channel and clear-water conditions in a narrow channel against the experimental data found in the literature. The in-house model NSMP3D can successfully produce both the live-bed and clear-water scouring throughout a stable long-term simulation. The flow model was used to study the effects of the blockage ratio in the flow near the pier in clear-water conditions, particularly the contraction effect at the zone where the scour hole starts to form. The scour depth in the clear water simulations is generally deeper than the live-bed simulations. In clear-water, the results show that the present model is able to qualitatively and quantitatively capture the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes near the bed. In comparison to the wide channel situation, the simulations indicate that the scour rate is faster in the narrow channel case.

Low-cost nanoscale copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHF), a good selective adsorbent for cesium (Cs+) removal, was prepared using the chemical co-precipitation method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) were conducted to determine the CuHF morphology. Copper hexacyanoferrate, Cu13[Fe(CN)6]14.(2K).10H2O, has a cubic structure (space group F-43m) in the range of 10-30 nm and a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 462.42 m2/g. The removal of Cs+ and Sr2+ is dependent on pH; the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of CuHF is achieved at a pH = 6. From the Langmuir model, qmax = 143.95 mg/g for Cs+ and 79.26 mg/g for Sr2+, respectively. At high concentrations, Na+, Ca2+, and K+ ions have very little effect on Cs+ removal, and Na+ and K+ ions have a higher affinity for removing Sr2+ than Ca2+ at all concentrations. CuHF has a high affinity for alkaline cations in the order: Cs+ > K+ > Na+ > Ca2+ > Sr2+, as proposed and discussed.

Many years after the introduction of quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs), publications related to it have been widely disseminated in scientific archives. In this study, a bibliometric analysis was conducted to examine the bibliographic content of publications indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded database from 2000 to 2021. Over the past two decades, 1557 articles have been published in the field of QDSSCs, covering studies on the photoanode, cathode, and electrolytes of the system. The most active journal, Electrochimica Acta, has published 6.48% of the total number of publications. The three most productive nations are China, South Korea, and India, accounting for 47.4%, 13%, and 9%, respectively, of publications from the top 20 nations. Through keyword analysis, our findings suggest that scholars have focused on controlling the optical and electrochemical properties of active materials, studying power conversion mechanisms, and investigating other internal kinetic mechanisms of QDSSCs. The authors and institutions are also classified based on their scientific performance over the past two decades to determine the intellectual base. This study assesses the general progression in QDSSC research and may provide baseline information to help scholars identify research trends in the field of QDSSCs.
