Abstract La‐decorated Bi2O2CO3 (BCO‐La) microspheres are synthesized using a facile wet chemical strategy for sensing low‐concentration nonanal (C9H18O) at room temperature. These BCO‐La gas sensors are applied to evaluate agricultural product quality, specifically for cooked rice. The sensitivity of the BCO‐6La sensor significantly surpassed that of the pure BCO sensor, achieving a response value of 174.6 when detecting 30 ppm nonanal gas. Notably, the BCO‐6La sensor demonstrated a faster response time (36 s) when exposed to 18 ppm of nonanal. Additionally, the selectivity toward nonanal gas detection is higher (approximately 4–24 times) compared to interfering gases (1‐octanol, geranyl acetone, linalool, hexanal, 2‐pentyfuran, and 1‐octen‐3‐ol) during cooked rice quality detection. The gas sensing mechanism and the factors contributing to the enhanced sensing performance of the BCO‐La microspheres are demonstrated through in situ FT‐IR spectra and DFT analysis while the realistic detection scenario is carried out. In a broader context, the reported sensors here represent a novel platform for the detection and monitoring of gases released by agricultural products during storage.

Abstract Dysregulation of the transforming growth factor‐β (TGF‐β) signaling pathway regulates cancer stem cells (CSCs) and drug sensitivity, whereas it remains largely unknown how feedback regulatory mechanisms are hijacked to fuel drug‐resistant CSCs. Through a genome‐wide CRISPR activation screen utilizing stem‐like drug‐resistant properties as a readout, the TGF‐β receptor‐associated binding protein 1 (TGFBRAP1) is identified as a TGF‐β‐inducible positive feedback regulator that governs sensitivity to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and promotes liver cancer stemness. By interacting with and stabilizing the TGF‐β receptor type 1 (TGFBR1), TGFBRAP1 plays an important role in potentiating TGF‐β signaling. Mechanistically, TGFBRAP1 competes with E3 ubiquitin ligases Smurf1/2 for binding to TGFΒR1, leading to impaired receptor poly‐ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. Moreover, hyperactive TGF‐β signaling in turn up‐regulates TGFBRAP1 expression in drug‐resistant CSC‐like cells, thereby constituting a previously uncharacterized feedback mechanism to amplify TGF‐β signaling. As such, TGFBRAP1 expression is correlated with TGFΒR1 levels and TGF‐β signaling activity in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues, as well as overall survival and disease recurrence in multiple HCC cohorts. Therapeutically, blocking TGFBRAP1‐mediated stabilization of TGFBR1 by selective inhibitors alleviates Regorafenib resistance via reducing CSCs. Collectively, targeting feedback machinery of TGF‐β signaling pathway may be an actionable approach to mitigate drug resistance and liver cancer stemness.

Stroke-related sarcopenia (SRS) is characterized by progressive systemic muscle loss and decreased function and is thought to be primarily affected by catabolic-anabolic imbalance, but there is a lack of specific treatment. Our study evaluated whether β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) improves SRS through regulation in protein synthesis and proteolysis. BHB reduced infarct volume, increased muscle mass and muscle fiber cross-sectional area. Delayed administration of BHB, when the infarct volume was stable, improved the balance beam score and time of rotarod and the above SRS indicators. Mechanistically, BHB increased the total contents of H3K9bhb in gastrocnemius muscles of tMCAO mice and enhanced the endogenous binding of H3K9bhb with Foxo3a promoter in response to the transcription inhibition of Foxo3a. Our study indicated BHB alleviated SRS, which was partly mediated by H3K9bhb, and then inhibited FOXO3a. BHB also promoted protein synthesis, muscle regeneration and proliferation to maintain protein metabolic homeostasis and ultimately ameliorated SRS.

In the early-stage diagnosis of lung cancer, the low-concentration (< 5 ppm) volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are extensively identified to be the biomarkers for breath analysis. Herein, the urchin-like sodium (Na)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoneedles were synthesized through a hydrothermal strategy with the addition of different contents of citric acid. The Na-doped ZnO gas sensor with a 3 : 1 molar ratio of Na+ and citric acid showed outstanding sensing properties with an optimal selectivity to various VOCs (formaldehyde (HCOH), isopropanol, acetone, and ammonia) based on working temperature regulation. Specifically, significantly enhanced sensitivity (21.3@5 ppm) compared with pristine ZnO (~7-fold), low limit of detection (LOD) (298 ppb), robust humidity resistance, and long-term stability of formaldehyde sensing performances were obtained, which can be attributed to the formation of a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies (20.98%) and the active electron transitions. Furthermore, the improved sensing mechanism was demonstrated by the exquisite band structure and introduction of the additional acceptor level, which resulted in the narrowed bandgap of ZnO.

Abstract Discerning weak electric fields has important implications for cosmology, quantum technology, and identifying power system failures. Photonic integration of electric field sensors is highly desired for practical considerations and offers opportunities to improve performance by enhancing microwave and lightwave interactions. Here, we demonstrate a high-Q microcavity electric field sensor (MEFS) by leveraging the silicon chip-based thin film lithium niobate photonic integrated circuits. Using the Pound-Drever-Hall detection scheme, our MEFS achieves a detection sensitivity of 5.2 μV/(m $$\sqrt{{{{{{{{\rm{Hz}}}}}}}}}$$ Hz ), which surpasses previous lithium niobate electro-optical electric field sensors by nearly two orders of magnitude, and is comparable to atom-based quantum sensing approaches. Furthermore, our MEFS has a bandwidth that can be up to three orders of magnitude broader than quantum sensing approaches and measures fast electric field amplitude and phase variations in real-time. The ultra-sensitive MEFSs represent a significant step towards building electric field sensing networks and broaden the application spectrum of integrated microcavities.

ObjectivesTuberculosis (TB) remains a significant concern in terms of public health, necessitating the timely and accurate diagnosis to impede its advancement. The utilization of oral swab analysis (OSA) presents a promising approach for diagnosing pulmonary TB by identifying Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) within oral epithelial cells. Due to disparities in the diagnostic performance of OSA reported in the original studies, we conducted a meticulous meta-analysis to comprehensively assess the diagnostic efficacy of OSA in pulmonary TB.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive investigation across multiple databases, namely PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), and Wanfang China Science and Technology Journal Database to identify relevant studies. Out search query utilized the following keywords: oral swab, buccal swab, tongue swab, tuberculosis, and TB. Subsequently, we employed STATA 16.0 to compute the combined sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and diagnostic odds ratio for both the overall and subgroup analyses.ResultsOur findings indicated that OSA has a combined sensitivity of 0.67 and specificity of 0.95 in individuals with pulmonary TB. Subgroup analysis further revealed that among adult individuals with pulmonary TB, the sensitivity and specificity of OSA were 0.73 and 0.93, respectively. In HIV-negative individuals with pulmonary TB, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.68 and 0.98, respectively. The performance of OSA in detecting pulmonary TB correlated with the bacteria load in sputum. Additionally, the sensitivity for diagnosing pulmonary TB using tongue specimens was higher (0.75, 95% CI: 0.65–0.83) compared to cheek specimens (0.52, 95% CI: 0.34–0.70), while both types of specimens demonstrated high specificity.ConclusionsTo conclude, oral swabs serve as a promising alternative for diagnosing pulmonary TB, especially in adult patients. In addition, tongue swabs yield better sensitivity than cheek swabs to identify pulmonary TB patients.Systematic review registrationidentifier: CRD42023421357.

Abstract Multimode fiber (MMF) lasers are emerging as a remarkable testbed to study nonlinear spatiotemporal physics with potential applications spanning from high energy pulse generation, precision measurement to nonlinear microscopy. The underlying mechanism for the generation of ultrashort pulses, which can be understood as a spatiotempoal dissipative soliton (STDS), in the nonlinear multimode resonators is the spatiotemporal mode-locking (STML) with simultaneous synchronization of temporal and spatial modes. In this review, we first introduce the general principles of STML, with an emphasize on the STML dynamics with large intermode dispersion. Then, we present the recent progress of STML, including measurement techniques for STML, exotic nonlinear dynamics of STDS, and mode field engineering in MMF lasers. We conclude by outlining some perspectives that may advance STML in the near future.

Abstract Background Dendritic cells (DCs) are most potent antigen-processing cells and play key roles in host defense against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection. In this study, hub genes in DCs during MTB infection were first investigated using bioinformatics approaches and further validated in Monocyte-derived DCs. Methods Microarray datasets were obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Principal component analysis (PCA) and immune infiltration analysis were performed to select suitable samples for further analysis. Differential analysis and functional enrichment analysis were conducted on DC samples, comparing live MTB-infected and non-infected (NI) groups. The CytoHubba plugin in Cytoscape was used to identify hub genes from the differentially expressed genes (DEGs). The expression of the hub genes was validated using two datasets and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in human monocyte-derived DCs. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to validate interferon (IFN) secretion. Transcription factors (TFs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) that interact with the hub genes were predicted using prediction databases. The diagnostic value of the hub genes was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC) values. Results A total of 1835 common DEGs among three comparison groups (18 h, 48 h, 72 h after MTB infection) were identified. Six DEGs (IFIT1, IFIT2, IFIT3, ISG15, MX1, and RSAD2) were determined as hub genes. Functions enrichment analysis revealed that all hub genes all related to IFN response. RT-qPCR showed that the expression levels of six hub genes were significantly increased after DC stimulated by live MTB. According to the results of ELISA, the secretion of IFN-γ, but not IFN-α/β, was upregulated in MTB-stimulated DCs. AUC values of six hub genes ranged from 84 to 94% and AUC values of 5 joint indicators of two hub genes were higher than the two hub genes alone. Conclusion The study identified 6 hub genes associated with IFN response pathway. These genes may serve as potential diagnostic biomarkers in tuberculosis (TB). The findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms involved in the host immune response to MTB infection and highlight the diagnostic potential of these hub genes in TB.

Abstract Stemming is one of the main concerns in blast of rock engineering due to its impact on explosion energy consumption and rock excavation performance. In this study, blast-induced rock fragmentation under different stemming conditions is numerically studied using combined numerical modelling and image processing. After careful determination the parameters of constitutive material models, the developed numerical model in LS-DYNA is verified based on the blast testing results including rock fracturing and fragment size distribution (FSD). The calibrated constitutive models are then used to model the pressure variation and rock disintegration produced by blasting with different stemming structures. The size data of simulated rock fragmentation are obtained by image-processing the cut surfaces of the numerical model with the program ImageJ, and the blast-created rock FSD is characterized using a three-parameter generalized extreme value function. The effects of the combination of explosive, air/sand deck and stemming on blast-induced rock fragmentation are quantitatively analysed, considering various stemming modes, stemming lengths and air/sand deck lengths. The results show that the blast-created fragment size decreases with an increase in stemming length, a decreasing in air/sand deck length, replacement of top stemming (stemming at borehole collar with air deck) with bottom stemming (stemming directly contact explosive) and alteration of air deck to sand deck, while the FSD range exhibits the opposite tendency. Bottom stemming is recommended for practical blasting due to its efficiency in rock fragmentation and robustness with respect to stemming length.

Duck adenovirus Type 3 (DAdV-3) severely affects the health of ducks; however, its pathogenicity in chickens remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the pathogenicity and major pathological changes caused by DAdV-3 in chickens. Viral DNA was extracted from the liver of the Muscovy duck, and the fiber-2 and hexon fragments of DAdV-3 were amplified through polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The evolutionary tree revealed that the isolated virus belonged to DAdV-3, and it was named HE-AN-2022. The mortality rate of chicks that received inoculation with DAdV-3 subcutaneously via the neck was 100%, while the mortality rate for eye–nose drop inoculation was correlated with the numbers of infection, with 26.7% of chicks dying as a result of exposure to multiple infections. The main symptoms exhibited prior to death were hepatitis–hydropericardium syndrome (HHS), ulceration of the glandular stomach, and a swollen bursa with petechial hemorrhages. A histopathological examination revealed swelling, necrosis, lymphocyte infiltration, and basophilic inclusion bodies in multiple organs. Meanwhile, the results of quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) demonstrated that DAdV-3 could affect most of the organs in chickens, with the gizzard, glandular stomach, bursa, spleen, and liver being the most susceptible to infection. The surviving chicks had extremely high antibody levels. After the chickens were infected with DAdV-3 derived from Muscovy ducks, no amino acid mutation was observed in the major mutation regions of the virus, which were ORF19B, ORF66, and ORF67. On the basis of our findings, we concluded that DAdV-3 infection is possible in chickens, and that it causes classic HHS with ulceration of the glandular stomach and a swollen bursa with petechial hemorrhages, leading to high mortality in chickens. The major variation domains did not change in Muscovy ducks or in chickens after infection. This is the first study to report DAdV-3 in chickens, providing a new basis for preventing and controlling this virus.

In the construction process of tunnel inlet sections, the rock mass can sustain unsymmetrical pressure due to asymmetrical terrain on the two sides of the tunnel. The fact that the inlet sections are usually under shallow buried conditions with strongly weathered rock mass exacerbates the issue. This paper discusses optimization strategies of the initial support of a shallow buried tunnel based on the analytical results of asymmetrical loading characteristics. Numerical simulation is performed with particle flow code (PFC) using the Jianshanji tunnel project as an example. The simulation results show that the bench excavation has slightly less total deformation than the full-section excavation but the deformation range is wider, especially in the tunnel arch. Both lining support and slope reduction treatments can effectively improve rock deformation, with lining support demonstrating better performance in controlling deformation and adjusting stress distribution. Based on the simulation results, the bench excavation and lining support are used in the actual project, and the corresponding optimization control measures were adopted to address deformation issues, including crushed-stone backfilling for compression resistance, advanced grouting reinforcement, and grouting. The field data show that the tunnel stability is effectively improved by adopting the optimization schemes, which further validates the effectiveness of the proposed unsymmetrical control method.

In the assessment of food quality, geranyl acetone plays a crucial role as a volatile organic compound (VOC) biomarker for diverse agricultural products, while the ultralow concentration detection meeting application requirements has been barely studied. Herein, an iron (Fe)-doped WO3−x gas sensor was employed for greatly sensitive, selective, and scalable geranyl acetone detection. The results proved that precisely-regulated oxygen vacancy (OV) and sophisticatedly-active electron transition of Fe-doped WO3−x nanoparticles were fulfilled by modifying the doping amount of Fe3+, leading to the prominently enhanced sensitivity (23.47 at 6 ppm), low limit of detection (LOD) (237 ppb), optimal selectivity, and outstanding long-term stability. Furthermore, the enhancing mechanism of gas sensing performance was substantiated through density functional theory (DFT) calculation, while the practical application for the evaluation of spoiled cooked rice was conducted as well. This study demonstrates a reliable method for detecting a VOC biomarker in cooked rice, which can ensure food security and improve palatability of cooked rice.

In the present study, a numerical model is first calibrated against the crack networks and pressure attenuation data in laboratory blasting test. Then, based on the calibrated numerical model, two-hole plane models are developed and used to perform a series of simulations of smoothwall blasting in deep tunnelling subjected to in-situ stress. The evolutions of rock fracture and excavation damage zone in the roof/floor and sidewalls under different far-field hydrostatic pressure and anisotropic in-situ stress conditions are numerically investigated. The findings in numerical modelling are also analytically interpreted with the stress distributions around the designed tunnel perimeter and perimeter borehole. The numerical and analytical results show that the variations of rock cracking and excavation damaged zone induced by smoothwall blasting with in-situ stress are mainly attributed to the high tangential compressive stress concentration around the remaining rock after inner primary blasts and the tensile stress acting on the wall of perimeter hole, which control the crack propagation and initiation respectively. At last, the implications of findings for practical smoothwall blasting in deep tunnelling are discussed.

Chemiresistive gas sensors have gained popularity in various fields including industry, agriculture, medical treatment, and the environment, thanks to the advancements in nanoscience and nanotechnology. To produce high-performance gas sensing devices, it is crucial to develop new sensing layers. Among zero to three-dimensional nanostructures, one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures have attracted significant attention due to their large surface-to-volume ratio, stretchable charge channels, and favorable assembly environment. This review aims to systematically discuss recent advances in novel sensing materials based on 1D nanostructures such as nanorods, nanoribbons, nanowires, nanofibers, and nanotubes. The 1D sensing materials encompass metal oxide semiconductors, metal–organic frameworks, conducting polymers, carbon-based materials, and complex composites. The review also delves into the design ideas, preparation methods, the relationship between structure, morphology and performance, and enhanced sensing mechanisms. Finally, the review summarizes the current state of the art for chemiresistive gas sensors based on 1D nanostructures and provides a brief outlook on future development perspectives.

Annona is a genus of family Annonaceae within the magnoliids and plays a crucial role in revealing the evolution of magnolias. Annona species provide important fruit resources. Here, we report a chromosome-level genome assembly of A. montana, an edible and ornamental fruit species. Integration with other genomes provides clear evidence that the magnoliids were sisters to eudicots, and the ASTRAL trees showed discordance in the phylogenetic position of magnoliids, which might be caused by incomplete lineage sorting (ILS). Whole genome duplication (WGD) analysis showed that the common ancestor of A. montana and Liriodendron chinense experienced a WGD event, and this WGD event occurred after the splitting of Magnoliales and Laurales. We identified the gene family expansions and contractions in Annonaceae. Based on the identification of MADS-box gene families, we inferred the pathway integrators of morphological regulation, the occurrence of florescence and the development of fruit in A. montana. In addition, we identified key sugar transporter genes and the key enzyme genes related to sugar accumulation in A. montana fruit. The gene function analysis indicated that starch and cell wall degradation might be the main reasons for the softening of A. montana fruit. Furthermore, aromatic alcohols were suggested be the main volatile aromatic compounds in A. montana fruit. Our results provide the genetic basis of fruit development, softening, aroma, and sugar accumulation in A. montana and the evolution and diversification of Annonaceae.

Abstract Rice (Oryza sativa L.), as the main refined grain in China, has attracted much attention in terms of quality. Rice is usually consumed after cooking, and it is a commonly staple food. Nowdays, people's requirements for cooked rice focus more on the taste characteristics and quality. Furthermore, aroma is one of the primary sensory reference points, which is the most intuitive way for people to judge cooked rice. By integrating and analyzing the researches of cooked rice aroma identification in recent five years, this paper expounds the extraction and identification methods (sensory evaluation method, GC-MS, SPME, MOS sensors, electronic nose, etc.) of the flavor substances in cooked rice, as the processing methods and properties of cooked rice, and the volatile organic compounds of cooked rice under different conditions are summarized as well. Abstract A kind of gold-coated glass nano-cone-tips (GGNCTs) is developed as an arrayed optical antenna for highly receiving and converging incident lightwaves. A local light field enhancement factor (LFEF) of ~ 2 × 104 and maximum light absorption of ~ 98% can be achieved. The near-field lightwave measurements at the wavelength of 633 nm show that the surface net charges over a single GGNCT make a typical dipole oscillation and the energy transmits along the wave vector orientation, thus leading to a strong local light field enhancement. An effective detection method by near-field coupling an arrayed GGNCT and complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) sensor for highly efficient imaging detection is proposed. The lightwave detection at several wavelengths, including typical 473 nm, 532 nm, 671 nm, and 980 nm, shows a notable characteristic that a better capability of the net charge distribution adjusting and localized aggregating can be obtained at the absorption peak of the GGNCT developed and a stronger signal detection achieved. The research lays a foundation for further developing a light detector with an ideal optoelectronic sensitivity and broad spectral suitability, which is based on integrating GGNCTs as an arrayed optical antenna with common sensors.

Abstract Background Peptide proteolysis-targeting chimeras (p-PROTACs) with advantages of high specificity and low toxicity have emerged as a powerful technology of targeted protein degradation for biomedical applications. FOXM1, a proliferation-associated transcription factor, is overexpressed in a variety of human tumors as a key driver of tumorigenesis and cancer progression, and is a potential anticancer therapeutic target. However, FOXM1-targeting p-PROTACs has not been researched. Methods Here, we first analyzed the expression of FOXM1, GLUT1 and PD-L1 in liver cancer through database and clinical samples of patients. FOXM1-targeting peptides, selected by screening phage display library, are verified its targeting effect by immunofluorescence and CCK-8 test. The novel p-PROTAC degrader of FOXM1 is chemically synthesis, named FOXM1-PROTAC, by linking a FOXM1-binding antagonistic peptide, with the E3 ubiquitin ligase recruitment ligand Pomalidomide and with the cell membrane penetrating peptide TAT. Its degradation effect on FOXM1 was detected by Western blotting, qPCR, and we verified its effect on the behavior of cancer cells by flow cytometry, scratch assay, and Transwell in vitro. The tumor xenografted mice model was used for evaluating FOXM1-PROTAC therapeutic response in vivo. Finally, we detected the expression of GLUT1 and PD-L1 after FOXM1-PROTAC degraded FOXM1 by using Western Blotting and hippocampal detectors and dual immunofluorescence. Results We found that the novel FOXM1-PROTAC efficiently entered cells and induced degradation of FOXM1 protein, which strongly inhibits viability as well as migration and invasion in various cancer cell lines, and suppressed tumor growth in HepG2 and MDA-MB-231 cells xenograft mouse models, without detected toxicity in normal tissues. Meanwhile, FOXM1-PROTAC decreased the cancer cells glucose metabolism via downregulating the protein expression levels of glucose transporter GLUT1 and the immune checkpoint PD-L1, which suggests involvement of FOXM1 in cancer cell metabolism and immune regulation. Conclusions Our results indicate that biologically targeted degradation of FOXM1 is an attractive therapeutic strategy, and antagonist peptide-containing FOXM1-PROTACs as both degrader and inhibitor of FOXM1 could be developed as a safe and promising drug for FOXM1-overexpressed cancer therapy.

The 2022 International Conference—Bamboo: A Very Sustainable Construction Material & the 3rd World Symposium on Sustainable Bio-Composite Materials and Structures—was held from November 8 to December 13, 2022. This conference was led by INBAR and INBAR Bamboo Construction Task Force and co-organized by 37 other national and international institutions. More than 80 experts from over 20 countries delivered speeches or presentations to approximately 1400 participants from 81 countries and shared the latest research and development on bamboo and timber construction with them. The conference convened global architects, engineers, forestry experts, researchers, entrepreneurs, and policy makers to present the potential uses and suitability of bamboo, timber, and other biomaterials as conventional construction materials in modern society. This paper summarizes the key deliberations and findings of the diverse research, including the state-of-practice and the means of moving the state-of-the-art forward. Further actions on training, standardization, and research were urged to be taken to promote this industry.

BackgroundThe association between the intake of dietary n3 and n6 fatty acids and the risk of stroke is subject to debate. The primary objective of the present research was to establish the correlation in a large sample of American adults.MethodsUsing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2018, the association of the intake of dietary n3 and n6 fatty acids with stroke events was analyzed in a sample of 29,459 adults. The intake of n3 and n6 fatty acids intake was assessed though two 24-h dietary recalls. Stroke outcomes were identified based on the responses provided in self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression was fitted to evaluate the correlation of dietary n3, n6 fatty acids intake with stroke events.ResultsSubjects in the highest tertile (T3) of dietary n3 (OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.49-0.93), n6 (OR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.45-0.95) fatty acids intake were found to have obviously lower risk of stroke compared to those in the lowest tertile (T1), but the n6:n3 ratio was not found to be associated with a stroke event. Results from stratified analysis demonstrated that dietary n3 fatty acids had an inverse correlation of stroke in both male and female, but dietary n6 fatty acids only had this correlation in male. Moreover, findings were made that the interaction was significant in terms of age in the subgroup analysis, and the negative relationship between the intake of dietary n3 and n6 fatty acids and stroke event were particularly pronounced among participants aged ≥60.ConclusionsThe present results suggested that increased dietary n3, n6 fatty acids intake correlated with a lower risk of stroke.

An unusually persistent and heavy rainfall event occurred in Hainan Island from 1 to 9 October 2010, in association with one extended tropical depression (TD) over the South China Sea (SCS). Based on rain-gauge precipitation, satellite altimetry, in situ Argo profile, air–sea enthalpy flux, and reanalysis data, this study investigates the impact of warm ocean anomalies in the SCS on the formation and intensification of the extended TD, and their reinforcing effect on TD-related heavy rainfall. The TD intensified and migrated northward to the vicinity of Hainan Island. A thicker-than-normal warm subsurface layer that was present beneath the positive sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies contained a sufficient upper-ocean heat content to effectively restrain the TD’s self-induced SST cooling effect, and available enthalpy fluxes were therefore sufficient to support the maintenance of the TD. The composite analyses confirm the reinforcing effect of warm oceanic anomalies in the central SCS off the south-central coast of Vietnam on heavy rainfall in Hainan Island, with the composite precipitation of “Warm eddy” cases being significantly larger in Hainan Island and northern Vietnam than that of the “Normal” cases, using reanalysis and remote sensing precipitation data over 29 years (1993–2021).

Ecosystem services are the beneficial goods and services that ecosystems provide to humans. Urbanization is an important feature of human social development. While promoting economic and social development, it also brings about land degradation, resource depletion, environmental pollution and other problems, intensifying the transformation of natural ecosystems into semi-natural and artificial ecosystems, ultimately leading to the loss of ecosystem service functions and declining value. The study of the impact of urbanization on the value of ecosystem services is of critical importance for the conservation of ecosystems and sustainable development. This study examined the spatio-temporal patterns of urbanization’s impacts on ecosystem service value in the Yellow River Basin from the perspective of spatio-temporal heterogeneity. Findings: (1) Both the ecosystem service value (ESV) and urbanization level (UL) in the Yellow River Basin were on the rise on the whole, but they were significantly spatially negatively correlated and mainly characterized by the high–low spatial clustering of “low ESV–high UL” and “high ESV–low UL”. This negative correlation was gradually weakened with the transformation of the urbanization development mode and ecological restoration projects in the Yellow River Basin. (2) The impacts of the five urbanization subsystems on the value of ecosystem services were diverse. Landscape urbanization had a negative impact on the value of ecosystem services in all regions; economic urbanization and innovation urbanization changed from having a negative to a positive impact; and demographic urbanization and social urbanization had both a positive and a negative impact. (3) To promote the coordinated development of ecological environmental protection and urbanization in the YRB, this paper proposes to change the urbanization development model, implement ecological restoration by zoning, and formulate classified development plans. This study compensates for the shortcomings of current studies that ignore the different impacts of urbanization subsystems on ecosystem service value and lack sufficient consideration of the spatio-temporal heterogeneity characteristics of urbanization and ESVs, enriches the theoretical understanding of the interrelationships between natural and human systems in basin areas, and provides a scientific basis for the rational formulation of urban planning and ecological protection policies in the region, which is of great theoretical and practical significance.

2021 International Collaboration on Bamboo Construction was held from September 1 to December 1, 2021. The practice was held by the College of Civil Engineering of Nanjing Forestry University, University College London, International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation (INBAR) and co-organized by 6 international institutions and national companies of China. Two main bamboo structures were setup by the teachers and students in the campus of Nanjing Forestry University. More than 50 students attended the practice, including international students from different countries. The practice was held to deliver the feasibility and applicability of bamboo in various geometries and different spans, and different areas. Innovative technologies like BIM Revit Architecture and Sketchup were used for the design of bamboo structures. The main principle of the practice was that the raising of bamboo structures should be simple using a minimum of materials aside from bamboo. The results of the project contributed to the popularization of the use of bamboo in the architecture, engineering and construction sectors.

2021 International Online Seminar - Bamboo: A Very Sustainable Construction Material was held in November 2021. This was led by INBAR and co-organised by other 16 national and international institutions. Nineteen senior experts from 10 countries delivered presentations and shared the latest research and development on bamboo construction to approximately 900 participants from 74 countries. The seminar called upon global architects, engineers and landscape designers to rethink time-tested traditional bamboo architectural forms and related technologies, and use innovative ideas to reshape the global built environment. This paper summarizes the findings of this Seminar, highlighting that while bamboo is growingly accepted as a construction material, considerable efforts are needed to promote bamboo as a mainstream material. The state-of-practice is summarized and means of moving the state-of-the-art forward are discussed. Architects and engineers using bamboo all over the world should work together to contribute to the basic work of bamboo architecture research, standardization and industry development.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Fibromodulin (FMOD) is the main proteoglycan that contributes to extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling by binding to matrix molecules, thereby playing an essential role in tumor growth and metastasis. There are still no useful drugs that target FMOD for CRC treatment in clinics. Here, we first used public whole-genome expression datasets to analyze the expression level of FMOD in CRC and found that FMOD was upregulated in CRC and associated with poor patient prognosis. We then used the Ph.D.-12 phage display peptide library to obtain a novel FMOD antagonist peptide, named RP4, and tested its anti-cancer effects of RP4 in vitro and in vivo. These results showed that RP4 inhibited CRC cell growth and metastasis, and promoted apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo by binding to FMOD. In addition, RP4 treatment affected the CRC-associated immune microenvironment in a tumor model by promoting cytotoxic CD8+ T and NKT (natural killer T) cells and inhibiting CD25+ Foxp3+ Treg cells. Mechanistically, RP4 exerted anti-tumor effects by blocking the Akt and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways. This study implies that FMOD is a potential target for CRC treatment, and the novel FMOD antagonist peptide RP4 can be developed as a clinical drug for CRC treatment.

ObjectivesIn this study, we conducted a systematic review to determine tuberculosis (TB) incidence due to immunotherapy with programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1)/PD ligand (PD-L1) blockade in cancer patients.MethodsWe searched PubMed, Cochrance Library, Excerpt Medica Database (Embase), ClinicalTrials.gov, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), Wanfang and China Science and Technology Journal Database to identify studies between January 1, 2000 and April 30, 2021, on the reports of TB cases in patients treated with PD-1/PD-L1 blockade. Methodological quality of eligible studies was assessed, and random-effect model meta-analysis was performed to generate the pooled incidence estimate of TB cases in patients undergoing PD-1/PD-L1 therapy.ResultsWe initially identified 745 records, of which 27 studies ultimately met the inclusion criteria and were included in our meta-analysis. A total of 35 TB cases occurred among patients treated with PD-1/PD-L1 blockade. Nivolumab (51.4%) was the most frequently used PD-1/PD-L1 blockade for cancer treatment. In addition, pulmonary TB was the most common form of tuberculosis seen in 77.1% cases. Clinical outcomes were recorded in 18 patients, of whom 77.8% were cured or achieved remission, and 22.2% were died of TB. Pooled analysis determined that the TB rate in this population was 2,000 cases per 100,000 persons, and the estimated rate for TB associated with PD-1/PD-L1 blockade was 35 times higher than that in the general population.ConclusionTo conclude, our results demonstrate that the clinical use of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors significantly increases risk of TB reactivation. An extremely high mortality rate due to TB disease is noted in the patients with PD-1/PD-L1 blockade.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most abundant post-transcriptional modification and involves a series of important biological processes. Therefore, accurate detection of the m6A site is very important for revealing its biological functions and impacts on diseases. Although both experimental and computational methods have been proposed for identifying m6A sites, few of them are able to detect m6A sites in different tissues. With the consideration of the spatial specificity of m6A modification, it is necessary to develop methods able to detect the m6A site in different tissues. In this work, by using the convolutional neural network (CNN), we proposed a new method, called im6A-TS-CNN, that can identify m6A sites in brain, liver, kidney, heart, and testis of Homo sapiens, Mus musculus, and Rattus norvegicus. In im6A-TS-CNN, the samples were encoded by using the one-hot encoding scheme. The results from both a 5-fold cross-validation test and independent dataset test demonstrate that im6A-TS-CNN is better than the existing method for the same purpose. Abstract Background Brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability in survivors of cardiac arrest, where neuroinflammation is believed to play a pivotal role, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Pyroptosis is a pro-inflammatory form of programmed cell death that triggers inflammatory response upon infection or other stimuli. This study aims to understand the role of microglial pyroptosis in post-cardiac arrest brain injury. Methods Sprague-Dawley male rats underwent 10-min asphyxial cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation or sham-operation. Flow cytometry analysis, Western blotting, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), co-immunoprecipitation, and immunofluorescence were used to evaluate activated microglia and CD11b-positive leukocytes after cardiac arrest and assess inflammasome activation and pyroptosis of specific cellular populations. To further explore the underlying mechanism, MCC950 or Ac-YVAD-cmk was administered to block nod-like receptor family protein 3 (NLRP3) or caspase-1, respectively. Results Our results showed that, in a rat model, successful resuscitation from cardiac arrest resulted in microglial pyroptosis and consequential inflammatory infiltration which was mediated by the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome. Targeting NLRP3 and caspase-1, the executor of pyroptosis, with selective inhibitors MCC950 and Ac-YVAD-cmk treatment significantly prevented microglial pyroptosis, reduced infiltration of leukocytes, improved neurologic outcome, and alleviated neuro-pathological damages after cardiac arrest in modeling rats. Conclusions This study demonstrates that microglial pyroptosis mediated by NLRP3 inflammasome is critically involved in the pathogenesis of post-cardiac arrest brain injury and provides a new therapeutic strategy.

In the field of correlation filter object tracking, the traditional template-update method easily causes template drift, so it performs poorly in complex scenes. To enhance the robustness of the template, a novel incremental multi-template update strategy is proposed in this paper. We find that reliability varies among all historical filters and that highly reliable filters are key to achieving accurate tracking. The incremental multi-template update strategy combines the local maximum-reliability filter template with the historical filter template incrementally, which is obviously different from the traditional update method. We apply this strategy to two trackers with superior performance. The experimental results of three test benchmarks, including the VOT2016, OTB100 and UAV123 datasets, show that the performance of our trackers is superior to that of the state-of-the-art trackers.

Status epilepticus (SE) is a neurological emergency usually accompanied by acute cerebral edema and long-term cognitive impairment, and is characterized by neurodegeneration and aberrant hyperphosphorylated tau protein (p-tau) aggregation. The glia-lymphatic (glymphatic) system plays a central role in facilitating the clearance of metabolic waste from the brain, but its relationship with cerebral edema and cognitive dysfunction after SE is unclear. We hypothesized that cerebral edema after SE might impair glymphatic system function through compression, thus leading to impaired removal of metabolic waste, and ultimately affecting long-term cognitive function. Our results showed that glymphatic system function was temporarily impaired, as evidenced by 2-photon imaging, MRI enhancement, imaging of brain sections, and astrocytic water channel aquaporin 4 (AQP4) protein polarization. The severity of cerebral edema on MRI correlated well with glymphatic system dysfunction within 8 days following SE. Moreover, when cerebral edema was alleviated by glibenclamide treatment or genetic deletion of Trpm4, post-SE glymphatic system function recovered earlier, along with fewer p-tau–deposited neurons and neuronal degeneration and better cognitive function. These findings suggest that SE-induced cerebral edema may cause glymphatic system dysfunction and render the post-SE brain vulnerable to p-tau aggregation and neurocognitive impairment.

China is still among the 30 high-burden tuberculosis (TB) countries in the world and TB remains a public health concern. TB can be a cause of mental illness, with prolonged treatment and several anti-TB drugs leading to extreme mental health problems such as depression and anxiety in TB patients. To investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among TB patients, and to explore whether drug resistance is a covariate for depressive and anxiety symptoms, a total of 167 pulmonary tuberculosis patients were enrolled in this study, which was conducted from January 1 to September 30, 2020. Data were collected, using a structured questionnaire with a demographic component, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), General Health Questionnaire 20 (GHQ-20), the Tuberculosis-related Stigma Scale (TSS) and the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS). Association between demographics, disease/treatment characteristics, stigma, social support, and anxiety/depression symptoms were investigated either based on Pearson's correlation coefficient or group comparisons based on independent t-test (or Mann-Whitney U-test) Multiple linear stepwise regression analysis was used for determining the predictors of anxiety and depression. The results showed that multi-drug resistance pulmonary tuberculosis patients were associated with anxiety challenges. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that self-esteem accounted for 33.5 and 38% of the variation in anxiety and depression, respectively. This shows that among tuberculosis patients, self-esteem is the factor that could most explains the depression and anxiety symptoms of patients, suggesting that we may could through improving the environment, society, and family respect and tolerance of tuberculosis patients, thereby improving the mental health of tuberculosis patients.

The building and construction industry is a traditional industry that features high-capacity investment, long return period, high environment impact, and low technology demand in the past decades. With the fast development of technology and the demand for environmental sustainability, it is inevitable for the building and construction industry to embrace the revolution of technology. Intelligent construction is developed in light of advanced technologies including advanced computing technology, 3D design and manufacturing, automation and control, sensing, unmanned aircraft, and autonomous intelligence. It is also closely integrated with using perceived, analytical, decision-making coordination for building construction with perceived intelligent execution technology in the processes. Currently, there is no consensus definition on “intelligent construction” despite its rapid development. This paper reviews existing and current development in intelligent construction focusing on the following three aspects: (a) new structural forms, which are innovative and with potential or are being applied to automated and mass manufacturing/construction; (b) automated and intelligent construction system; and (c) advanced structure sensing and monitoring technology. These three components do not compromise the entire aspects for intelligent construction, but they have no doubt are the core elements for intelligent construction towards future building systems.

Accurate measurement of drill bit position and direction is the main technology to realize automation and intelligence in oil drilling field. In recent years, with the rapid development of complex drilling technologies such as high deviation wells, directional wells and horizontal wells, higher requirements have been put forward for measurement technology, especially for real-time monitoring of bit attitude and position during the drilling process. Therefore, for the past few years, the measurement while drilling (MWD) system has been widely recognized and developed rapidly in precision targeted drilling. among them, strap-down inertial navigation system (SINS) consisting of accelerometer and gyroscope is the key of down-hole measurement while drilling. To solve the problem of accumulated errors in SINS, in this paper, a positioning error correction method based on kinematic constraint-aided (KC) SINS zero velocity updated (ZUPT) model is proposed. Firstly, based on the acceleration and angular velocity information measured by SINS, empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and wavelet de-noising reconstruction are performed for MWD signals. Secondly, the static detection model of the drill bit is established by using the reconstructed signal. Thirdly, using drilling technology to analyze the motion attitude of the bit, the KC model of the down-hole bit is established. By analysis the alternating effect of the KC model and the ZUPT model in the process of the bit movement and stop, the ZUPT model of the SINS is established. Finally, experimental verification is performed by building a drilling platform. The experimental results show that the maximum positioning error of the proposed positioning model is 0.15 m within 300 s. Comparing with a single KC model and a single ZUPT model, the bit positioning accuracy is improved to 92.6%, which effectively suppresses the original cumulative error, and verifies the feasibility of the proposed method.

Interleukin-35 (IL-35) is a heterodimeric cytokine composed of Epstein-Barr virus-induced gene 3 (EBI3) and IL-12p35 that has recently been shown to play diverse and important roles in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Owing to its immunosuppressive activity and ability to promote tumor growth and progression, IL-35 is widely recognized as a key mediator of TME status. Immune cells are key mediators of diverse tumor-related phenotypes, and immunosuppressive cytokines such as IL-35 can promote tumor growth and metastasis in TME. These influences should be considered together. Since tumor immunotherapy based on immune checkpoint blockade remains ineffective in many patients due to tumoral resistance, a new target or efficacy enhancing factor is urgently needed. Suppressing IL-35 production and activity has been demonstrated as an effective factor that inhibits tumor cells viability, and further investigation of this cytokine is warranted. However, the mechanistic basis for IL-35-mediated regulation of immune cells in the TME remains to be fully clarified. In the present review, we explore the roles of IL-35 in regulating immune cells within the TME. In addition, we highlight IL-35 as a specific immunological target and discuss its possible relevance in the context of immunotherapy. Lastly, we sought to summarize potential future research directions that may guide the advancement of current understanding regarding the role of this important cytokine as a regulator of oncogenesis.

The high in situ stress can significantly affect the blast-induced rock fragmentation and cause difficulties in deep mining and civil engineering where the drilling and blasting technique is applied. In this study, the rock crack propagation induced by blasting under in situ stress is first analyzed theoretically, and then a numerical model with a decoupled charge in LS-DYNA is developed to reveal how the initiation and propagation of rock cracks are under high in situ stress. Through simulation, the mechanisms of blast-induced crack evolution under various hydrostatic pressures and nonhydrostatic pressures are investigated, and the differences in crack evolution with specific decoupling coefficients are compared. According to the simulation, three damage zones, i.e., the crushed zone, the nonlinear fracture zone, and the radial crack propagation zone, are formed, and the radial crack evolution is greatly suppressed by the high in situ stress which has no much influence on the crack propagation in the crushed and the nonlinear fracture zones. The velocity of crack propagation is slightly reduced, and the process of crack propagation is stopped early when the rock is subjected to high in situ stress. Furthermore, the numerical analysis indicates that the crack grows preferentially in the direction of maximum principal stress, and the radial crack propagation is predominantly controlled by the preloaded pressure, which is vertical to the crack propagation direction. Based on the numerical results, it is suggested that the optimal decoupling coefficients for rock cracking are 2.65, 1.87, 1.37, and 1.22 for 0, 10, 20, and 30 MPa, respectively. This study provides not only an analysis of the rock crack evolution under high in situ stress but also a reference for resolving excavation difficulties in deep mining.

A concrete structure built on rock foundation works together with the connected rock mass, which has a significant effect on the mechanical behaviors of the concrete structure. To study the effect of lithology on the mechanical and damage behaviors of concrete in a concrete-rock combined specimen (CRCS), first, a test method for measuring the concrete part (concrete in CRCS) is adopted, then, uniaxial compression tests on seven types of specimens are performed and acoustic emission (AE) events are simultaneously monitored. Test results show that the low-strength concrete part plays a major role in the fracture behavior of CRCS. When the CRCS is failed, a sudden stress drop happens in CRCS, and the rock part (rock in CRCS) experiences a rapid axial strain recovery and intensifies the failure of the concrete part. The load-bearing and deformation capacities of the concrete part increase with the strength of the rock part, but the rock part shows the opposite behaviors under the influence of the concrete part. Furthermore, the damage of CRCS is mainly formed in the concrete part, and the damage extent of the concrete part is positively correlated with the strength of the rock part. Finally, a damage constitutive model of the concrete part is established and validated. This model can be used to accurately describe the effect of lithology on the mechanical response of the concrete part under uniaxial compression loading.

The increasing water use for human activities is threatening the health of ecosystems. Most previous studies on water scarcity mainly centered on human society. In this study, we developed a new indicator, ecological water scarcity (WS _eco ), that considers water quantity, water quality, and environmental flow requirements. WS _eco was assessed at the provincial level in China. The results show that northern China suffered more severe WS _eco than southern China. In addition, the WS _eco level decreased in 65% of provinces from 2016 to 2019, implying the great achievement of China’s effort in saving water and reducing pollution. The main driving factor of WS _eco in most provinces was pollution rather than human water use. The findings of this study demonstrate the spatial distribution, temporal dynamics, and driving factors of WS _eco in China. The results can be used to guide efforts for ecological restoration and sustainable water management in different regions.

In this paper, a prototyped plenoptic camera based on a key electrically tunable liquid-crystal (LC) device for all-in-focus polarimetric imaging is proposed. By using computer numerical control machining and 3D printing, the proposed imaging architecture can be integrated into a hand-held prototyped plenoptic camera so as to greatly improve the applicability for outdoor imaging measurements. Compared with previous square-period liquid-crystal microlens arrays (LCMLA), the utilized hexagonal-period LCMLA has remarkably increased the light utilization rate by ~15%. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed imaging approach can simultaneously realize both the plenoptic and polarimetric imaging without any macroscopic moving parts. With the depth-based rendering method, both the all-in-focus images and the all-in-focus degree of linear polarization (DoLP) images can be obtained efficiently. Due to the large depth-of-field advantage of plenoptic cameras, the proposed camera enables polarimetric imaging in a larger depth range than conventional 2D polarimetric cameras. Currently, the raw light field images with three polarization states including I0 and I60 and I120 can be captured by the proposed imaging architecture, with a switching time of several tens of milliseconds. Some local patterns which are selected as interested target features can be effectively suppressed or obviously enhanced by switching the polarization state mentioned. According to experiments, the visibility in scattering medium can also be apparently improved. It can be expected that the proposed polarimetric imaging approach will exhibit an excellent development potential.

Acer Linn. is a highly divergent species morphology in the maple family (Aceraceae). It is one of the genera facing a very difficult taxonomic situation. The phylogeny of the genus and the taxonomic system under the genus remain unclear. The use of electrochemical fingerprints for plant phylogenetic study is an emerging application in biosensors. In this work, leaves of 18 species of Acer Linn. with an exo-taxa were selected for electrochemical fingerprint recording. Two different conditions were used for improving the data abundance. The fingerprint of all species showed a series of oxidation peaks. These peaks can be ascribed to the oxidation of flavonols, phenolic acids, procyanidins, alkaloids, and pigments in plant tissue. These electrochemical fingerprints can be used for the identification of plant species. We also performed a phylogenetic study with data from electrochemical fingerprinting. The phylogenetic tree of Acer is divided into three main clades. The result is in full agreement with A. shangszeense var. anfuense, A. pictum subsp. mono, A. amplum, A. truncatum, and A. miaotaiense, belonging to the subsection Platanoidea. A. nikoense and A. griseum were clustered together in the dendrogram. Another group that fits the traditional classification results is in the subsection Integrifolia.

Emerging evidence suggests that fibromodulin (FMOD), an extracellular matrix protein, is associated with cancer, and yet little is known about the regulation of FMOD expression and its role in cancer metastasis. Aspirin, a classic anti-inflammatory drug, has been indicated to offer anticancer benefits, but its action targets and mechanisms remain obscure. In the present study using cell lines, animal model and database analysis, we show that FMOD is crucial for breast cancer cell migration and invasion (BCCMI) via activation of ERK; expression of FMOD is regulated positively by the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, wherein the β-catenin/TCF4/LEF1 complex binds the FMOD promoter to transcribe FMOD. Aspirin inhibits BCCMI by attenuating Wnt/β-catenin signaling and suppressing FMOD expression via inhibiting deacetylation of β-catenin by histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) leading to β-catenin phosphorylation and cytoplasmic degradation. Moreover, expression of the transcriptional complex components β-catenin/TCF4/LEF1 is upregulated by the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, constituting positive feedback loops that amplify its signal output. Our findings identify a critical role of FMOD in cancer metastasis, reveal a mechanism regulating FMOD transcription and impacting tumor metastasis, uncover action targets and mechanism for the anticancer activity of Aspirin, and expand the understanding of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and tumor metastasis, which are valuable for development of cancer therapeutics.

Intestinal microbiota is now widely known to play key roles in nutritional uptake, metabolism, and regulation of human immune responses. There are multiple studies assessing intestinal microbiota changes in response to chemotherapy. In this study, microbial phylogenetic molecular ecological networks (pMENs) were firstly used to study the effects of chemotherapy on the intestinal microbiota of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Based on the random network model, we demonstrated that overall network structures and properties were significantly changed by chemotherapy, especially in average path length, average clustering coefficient, average harmonic geodesic distance and modularity (P < 0.05). The taxa in the module tended to co-exclude rather than co-occur in CRC patient networks, indicating probably competition relationships. The co-exclude correlations were decreased by 37.3% from T0 to T5 in response to chemotherapy. Significantly negative correlations were observed in positive/negative OTU degree and tumor markers (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the topological roles of the OTUs (module hubs and connectors) were changed with the chemotherapy. For example, the OTU167, OTU8, and OTU9 from the genera Fusobacterium, Bacteroides, and Faecalibacterium, respectively, were identified as keystone taxa, which were defined as either “hubs” or OTUs with highest connectivity in the network. These OTUs were significantly correlated with tumor markers (P < 0.05), suggesting that they probably were influenced by chemotherapy. The pMENs constructed in this study predicted the potential effects of chemotherapy on intestinal microbial community co-occurrence interactions. The changes may have an effect on the therapeutic effects. However, larger clinical samples are required to identify the conclusion.

Intervertebral disc (IVD) is an immune-privileged organ that lacks immunocytes, such as macrophages or neutrophils; therefore, it is unclear how IVD immunological defense against bacterial infection occurs. Here, we demonstrated that nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs), the vital machinery for maintaining the homeostasis of IVD, exerted microbicidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus via induction of phagolysosome formation. Moreover, we found that the Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2)/mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) signaling pathway is critical for bacterial phagocytosis and phagolysosome formation of NPCs. These findings demonstrated for the first time that NPCs could function as non-professional phagocytes against S. aureus infection, thereby enhancing antimicrobial defense against bacterial infections in IVDs.

In recent years, there has been a rapid rise in the development of engineered bamboo materials, which have the potential to play an important role as alternatives to conventional building materials. Despite the growing diversity of bamboo products available on the market, the international standardization of both bamboo products and their constituent elements is limited, and a lack of universal nomenclature is recognized as one of the main constraints on developing standards. Similar or identical terminology is used interchangeably to describe different bamboo elements, processes, or products across sectors and continents. In some cases, translated colloquial names are misleading and scientifically inaccurate, which forms a barrier to global collaboration and research, creates ambiguity, and potentially limits trade. The present work aims to address this gap by proposing a set of appropriate terms in English that accurately describe and differentiate between currently produced engineered bamboo products and their constituent elements, accompanied by parallel terms in Chinese and Spanish. From these, new categories of engineered bamboo building materials are proposed for the Harmonized System of product codes. This paper highlights current ambiguities and provides terminology together with clear definitions of the main primary elements, processing steps, and products.

As a unique electric-optics material, liquid crystals (LCs) have been used in various light-control applications. In LC-based light-control devices, the structural alignment of LC molecules is of great significance. Generally, additional alignment layers are required for LC lens and microlens, such as rubbed polyimide (PI) layers or photoalignment layers. In this paper, an electrically controlled liquid crystal microlens array (EC-LCMLA) based on single-crystal graphene (SCG) coupling alignment is proposed. A monolayer SCG with high conductivity and initial anchoring of LC molecules was used as a functional electrode, thus no additional alignment layer is needed, which effectively simplifies the basic structure and process flow of conventional LCMLA. Experiments indicated that a uniform LC alignment can be acquired in the EC-LCMLA cell by the SCG coupling alignment effect. The common optical properties including focal lengths and point spread function (PSF) were measured experimentally. Experiments demonstrated that the proposed EC-LCMLA has good focusing performance in the visible to near-infrared range. Moreover, the plenoptic imaging in Galilean mode was achieved by integrating the proposed EC-LCMLA with photodetectors. Digital refocusing was performed to obtain a rendering image of the target.

With the rapid economic development, manufacturing enterprises are increasingly using an efficient workshop production scheduling system in an attempt to enhance their competitive position. The classical workshop production scheduling problem is far from the actual production situation, so it is difficult to apply it to production practice. In recent years, the research on machine scheduling has become a hot topic in the fields of manufacturing systems. This paper considers the batch processing machine (BPM) scheduling problem for scheduling independent jobs with arbitrary sizes. A novel fast parallel batch scheduling algorithm is put forward to minimize the makespan in this paper. Each of the machines with different capacities can only handle jobs with sizes less than the capacity of the machine. Multiple jobs can be processed as a batch simultaneously on one machine only if their total size does not exceed the machine capacity. The processing time of a batch is determined by the longest of all the jobs processed in the batch. A novel and fast 4.5-approximation algorithm is developed for the above scheduling problem. For the special case of all the jobs having the same processing times, a simple and fast 2-approximation algorithm is achieved. The experimental results show that fast algorithms further improve the competitive ratio. Compared to the optimal solutions generated by CPLEX, fast algorithms are capable of generating a feasible solution within a very short time. Fast algorithms have less computational costs.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a growing health problem throughout the world. Strong evidences have supported that gut microbiota can influence tumorigenesis; however, little is known about what happens to gut microbiota following surgical resection. Here, we examined the changes of gut microbiota in CRC patients after the surgical resection. Using the PCoA analysis and dissimilarity tests, the microbial taxonomic compositions and diversities of gut microbiota in post-surgery CRC patients (A1) were significantly different from those in pre-surgery CRC patients (A0) and healthy individuals (H). Compared with A0 and H, the Shannon diversity and Simpson diversity were significantly decreased in A1 (P < 0.05). Based on the LEfSe analysis, the relative abundance of phylum Proteobacteria in A1 was significantly increased than that in A0 and H. The genus Klebsiella in A1 had higher proportions than that in A0 (P < 0.05). Individual variation was distinct; however, 90% of CRC patients in A1 had more abundances of Klebsiella than A0. The Klebsiella in A1 was significantly associated with infectious diseases (P < 0.05), revealed by the correlation analysis between differentiated genera and metabolic pathway. The Klebsiella (Proteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Enterobacteriales, Enterobacteriaceae) in A1 was significantly linked with lymphatic invasion (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the PCA of KEGG pathways indicated that gut microbiota with a more scattered distribution in A1 was noticeably different from that in A0 and H. The nodes, the links, and the kinds of phylum in each module in A1 were less than those in A0 and H, indicating that gut microbiota in A1 had a relatively looser ecologcial interaction network. To sum up, this pilot study identified the changes of gut microbiota in post-surgery CRC patients, and highlights future avenues in which the gut microbiota is likely to be of increasing importance in the care of surgical patients.

Background Sudden cardiac arrest (CA) often results in severe injury to the brain, and neuroprotection after CA has proved to be difficult to achieve. Herein, we sought to investigate the effects of metformin pretreatment on brain injury secondary to CA and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Methods and Results Rats were subjected to 9‐minute asphyxial CA after receiving daily metformin treatment for 2 weeks. Survival rate, neurologic deficit scores, neuronal loss, AMP‐activated protein kinase (AMPK), and autophagy activation were assessed at indicated time points within the first 7 days after return of spontaneous circulation. Our results showed that metformin pretreatment elevated the 7‐day survival rate from 55% to 85% and significantly reduced neurologic deficit scores. Moreover, metformin ameliorated CA‐induced neuronal degeneration and glial activation in the hippocampal CA1 region, which was accompanied by augmented AMPK phosphorylation and autophagy activation in affected neuronal tissue. Inhibition of AMPK or autophagy with pharmacological inhibitors abolished metformin‐afforded neuroprotection, and augmented autophagy induction by metformin treatment appeared downstream of AMPK activation. Conclusions Taken together, our data demonstrate, for the first time, that metformin confers neuroprotection against ischemic brain injury after CA/cardiopulmonary resuscitation by augmenting AMPK‐dependent autophagy activation.

The presence of water strongly affects rock properties and would be related to a series of geological disasters. To understand water saturation effects on the mechanical behavior of different rock types and interpret the underlying mechanisms of differences in water sensitivity, three kinds of rocks, namely sandstone, granite and marble, were selected for tests. Uniaxial compression experiments were conducted on specimens under oven-dried and water-saturated conditions. Acoustic emission (AE) techniques were also applied to monitor and record AE signals during tests. Experimental results reveal that water weakens the mechanical parameters of the three tested rocks, such as uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), elastic modulus and critical strain. The sandstone undergoes the greatest weakening with the addition of pore water, the mechanical properties of the granite exhibit relatively minor reductions, while the marble is the least affected by water saturation. The water-weakening degree of rock properties depends on the porosity as well as the mineralogy, especially the proportion of quartz and swelling clays. Moreover, after water saturation, the failure pattern of the sandstone and the granite tends to transform into the shear-dominant mode from the tensile one in dry state, probably due to frictional reduction. However, the water presence does not change the failure mode of the marble.

Ultraviolet (UV) photodetection has drawn a great deal of attention in recent years due to a wide range of civil and military applications. Because of its wide band gap, low cost, strong radiation hardness and high chemical stability, ZnO are regarded as one of the most promising candidates for UV photodetectors. Additionally, doping in ZnO with Mg elements can adjust the bandgap largely and make it feasible to prepare UV photodetectors with different cut-off wavelengths. ZnO-based photoconductors, Schottky photodiodes, metal–semiconductor–metal photodiodes and p–n junction photodetectors have been developed. In this work, it mainly focuses on the ZnO and ZnMgO films photodetectors. We analyze the performance of ZnO-based photodetectors, discussing recent achievements, and comparing the characteristics of the various photodetector structures developed to date.
