Magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.7Ti0.3O3 (LSMO/PMN–PT (001)) has been probed in the past years to identify the underlying mechanism behind it. PMN–PT, which is well known for its excellent piezoelectric properties, also exhibits ferroelectricity. This motivates our interest to differentiate which effect is dominant for this 'voltage control of magnetism'. Here, we present results for the ME coupling at different temperatures: 300 K and 80 K. In this article we discuss and explain, how the nature of ME coupling is influenced by different parameters such as magnetic field, electric field, directional dependence (hard axis, easy axis) and temperature. Owing to large lattice mismatch between LSMO and PMN–PT, the strain-mediated coupling is strongly prevalent, however the change in strain behaviour from butterfly loop to linear loop is observed as a function of temperature. ME measurements are performed along hard axis [100] and easy axis [110] of LSMO in the presence of remanent magnetic field which showcases the pure influence of electric field on the system, resulting in a combination of strain- and charge-mediated coupling. The magnetic depth profile is probed by polarized neutron reflectometry as a function of electric field which demonstrates the existence of an interlayer with reduced nuclear scattering length density and reduced magnetic scattering length density at the interface. The significance of neutron spin adiabaticity in the data analysis of polarized Grazing Incidence Small Angle Neutron Scattering (GISANS) is discussed, with the aim of minimizing the number of simulation parameters of complex magnetic models within the neutron scattering cross-section. We illustrate how an estimate of the neutron polarization direction and adiabaticity can be obtained by magnetic field and neutron ray-tracing simulations and compare the results with measurements of the magnetic field map for the beamline used in the GISANS experiment. We show how small deviations from the neutron polarization direction with respect to the magnetic field vector at the sample position significantly affect the data analysis, and how this can be considered within the magnetic model of the scattering cross section using the Distorted Wave Born Approximation.

The present study focuses on structural and dynamical properties of the catalytic layer for high-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells (HT-PEFC). The catalytic layer is a composite material containing nanoporous carbon, poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) and platinum (Pt) nanoparticles. The structure of the catalyst is investigated using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) following different preparation steps of the electrodes: pure carbon support, platinum/carbon (Pt/C) powder and finally, complete catalytic layer. The structural properties of the Pt/C powder containing different amounts of Pt are discussed along with the size distribution of Pt particles and their arrangement on the surface of the carbon support. Following the preparation sequence of the catalytic layer based on the Pt/C powders the electrodes with different final Pt loadings are analyzed in details. Investigation of the structure of the catalytic layer is accompanied by the study of nanosecond dynamics of the phosphoric acid (PA) in the catalytic layer containing different amount of Pt by means of neutron backscattering spectroscopy. The structure of the catalytic layer is mostly determined by the structure of the catalytic powder and does not vary significantly with Pt loading in the electrode. We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of $\lbrack$ Er|Tb $\rbrack$ multilayers by different scattering methods. Diffuse X-ray scattering under grazing incidence reveals the interface structure in $\lbrack$ Er|Tb $\rbrack$ bilayers and trilayers, indicating vertically correlated roughness between the Er and Tb interfaces. The magnetic properties of $\lbrack$ ErnEr|TbnTb $\rbrack$ superlattices have been studied as a function of the superlattice composition (indices denote the number of atomic layers). Coupled ferromagnetic structures exist in all investigated samples. The phase transition temperature varies with the Tb layer thickness. Modulated magnetic order is short range for all samples beside the $\lbrack$ Er20|Tb5 $\rbrack$ superlattice, the sample with the smallest Tb layer thickness. We observe dipolar antiferromagnetic coupling between single ferromagnetic Tb layers in all samples, with the onset of this ordering depending on the Tb layer thickness. Due to competing interactions, exchange coupling is limited to the interface near region. Therefore long range modulated magnetic order is observed in the $\lbrack$ Er20|Tb5 $\rbrack$ superlattice only, where the interface regions overlap. The distinct differences to the magnetic structure of an Er0.8Tb0.2 alloy film are explained by a highly anisotropic arrangement of neighbouring atoms due to the correlated roughness. We put forward a new presentation of the theory of off-specular scattering of polarized neutrons from magnetic multilayers within the distorted wave Born approximation developed by one of the authors. In this presentation, a clear separation is made between (1) the structure factors, model dependent, and (2) the optical coefficients and the efficiencies of the polarizer and the analyzer, model independent. It therefore permits an easy plugging in of any particular model of structural and magnetic correlations. For a test, we show simulations of off-specular scattering from magnetic domains in multilayers exhibiting anti-ferromagnetic coupling, a situation encountered in the literature. We show a measurement of off-specular polarized neutron scattering from an Fe/Cr/Fe trilayer inside which a second-order neutron resonance has been excited, i.e. where the probability to find a neutron was maximum at both Fe/Cr interfaces. Simulating the data in the framework of the Distorted Wave Born Approximation showed the presence of structural and magnetic fluctuations. Magnetic fluctuations in the vicinity of the Fe/Cr interfaces can be explained if one considers the anti-ferromagnetic structure of Cr and structural roughness. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) studies have been performed on granular multilayers [Co80Fe20(tn )/Al2O3 (3nm)] m . For a non-percolating superferromagnetic (SFM) sample (tn =1.3nm) no spin-flip (SF) scattering was observed, measured at various points of the hysteresis, confirming that the magnetization reversal is achieved merely by domain nucleation and growth. For a percolated sample (tn =1.6nm) an oscillating magnetization depth profile from FeCo layer to FeCo layer along the multilayer stack was observed around the coercive field. The competition between long-range dipolar, short-range Néel and external field interactions apparently give rise to such a modulated magnetization depth profile in these magnetic multilayers. Discontinuous metal-insulator multilayers (DMIMs) of [CoFe(tn)/Al2O3]m containing soft ferromagnetic (FM) Co80Fe20 nanoparticles embedded discontinuously in a diamagnetic insulating Al2O3 matrix are ideal systems to study interparticle interaction effects. Here the CoFe nanoparticles are treated as superspins with random size, position and anisotropy. At low particle density, namely nominal layer thickness tn = 0.5 nm, single-particle blocking phenomena are observed due to the absence of large enough interparticle interactions. However at 0.5 nm 1.4 nm physical percolation occurs between the particles and the samples are no longer discontinuous and then termed as metal insulating multilayers. Competition between long- and short-ranged dipolar interactions leads to an oscillating magnetization depth profile from CoFe layer to CoFe layer with an incommensurate periodicity. The surface layer of an epitaxial Fe/Cr multilayer system has been structured lithographically into stripes with 1 μm period. Polarized neutron reflectometry and diffuse scattering under grazing incidence measurements show strongly enhanced domain formation compared to the unstructured sample. By controlling the chemical composition and the spatial organization of nanoparticles, hybrid nanocomposites incorporating ordered arrangements of nanoparticles could be endowed with exotic physical and chemical properties to fulfill demands in advanced electronics or energy-harvesting devices. However, a simple method to fabricate hybrid nanocomposites with precise control of nanoparticle distribution is still challenging. We demonstrate that block copolymer-based nanocomposites containing well-ordered nanoparticles with various morphologies can be readily obtained by adjusting the nanoparticle concentration. Moreover, the structural evolution of nanocomposite thin films as a function of nanoparticle loading is unveiled using grazing-incidence transmission small-angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy. The morphological transformation proceeds through a phase transition from perforated lamellae to in-plane cylinder layout, followed by structural changes. The successful achievement of a variety of morphologies represents an effective and straightforward approach to producing functional hybrid nanocomposites for potential applications in various functional devices.

Double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) fragments exhibit noncovalent attractive interactions between their tips. It is still unclear how DNA liquid crystal self-assembly is affected by such blunt-end attractions. It is demonstrated that stiff dsDNA fragments with moderate aspect ratio can specifically self-assemble in concentrated aqueous solutions into different types of smectic mesophases on the basis of selectively screening of blunt-end DNA stacking interactions. To this end, this type of attractions are engineered at the molecular level by constructing DNA duplexes where the attractions between one or both ends are screened by short hairpin caps. All-DNA bilayer and monolayer smectic-A type of phases, as well as a columnar phase, can be stabilized by controlling attractions strength. The results imply that the so far elusive smectic-A in DNA rod-like liquid crystals is a thermodynamically stable phase. The existence of the bilayer smectic phase is confirmed by Monte-Carlo simulations of hard cylinders decorated with one attractive terminal site. This work demonstrates that DNA blunt-ends behave as well-defined monovalent attractive patches whose strength and position can be potentially precisely tuned, highlighting unique opportunities concerning the stabilization of nonconventional DNA-based lyotropic liquid crystal phases assembled by all-DNA patchy particles with arbitrary geometry and composition., (© 2021 The Authors.
