Using consumer socialization theory, this study examined the associations between perceived influence of parents, peers, employment, and media and spending behaviors of emerging adult college students from three different regions of the US: Northeast, South Atlantic, and Mountain regions. Data from the Emerging Adult Financial Capability Study (N = 2,322) were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Greater parental and employment influences perceived by the students were linked with more responsible spending behaviors, while greater peer and media influences were associated with less responsible spending behaviors. This study highlights the importance of the home and the workplace as the nexus for financial learning. This knowledge can help focus efforts to help future emerging adult college students learn responsible spending behaviors.

Abstract Aims To estimate the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), expanded MACE, and MACE or Death across Fibrosis- 4 score (FIB-4) categories in people with type 2 diabetes and to determine whether efpeglenatide’s effect varies with increasing FIB-4 severity. Materials and methods AMPLITUDE-O trial data were used to estimate the relationship of FIB-4 score categories to the hazard of MACE, expanded MACE, and MACE or death. Interactions on these outcomes between baseline FIB-4 score, and between FIB-4 score and efpeglenatide were also assessed. Results Baseline FIB-4 score was available for 4059 participants (99.6%) allowing subdivision of the population in tertiles. During a median follow-up of 1.8 years, numerical increases in the incidence of all 3 outcomes did not change significantly across tertiles of FIB-4 score (P for trend ≥ 0.25) with negligible relationship of the score to incident outcomes (MACE HR, per 1 SD higher score, 95% CI: 1.00, 0.89–1.13). Efpeglenatide’s effect on all MACE outcomes did not vary across FIB-4 tertiles (all interaction p values ≥ 0.64). Conclusions In high-risk people with type 2 diabetes, the degree of liver fibrosis, as estimated by FIB-4 score, was not related to incident cardiovascular outcomes. The beneficial effect of efpeglenatide on these outcomes is independent of FIB-4 category.

To date, research on mixed-reality simulation (MRS) has focused on various skills including applied behavior analysis, but studies have not evaluated the role of preservice teachers' perceived knowledge, confidence, usefulness, or actual practice related to data collection. To address this gap, we conducted two separate MRS studies, one for behavioral data collection, and one for sharing academic progress in an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting. Results of both studies indicate participants' perceptions of their knowledge and confidence significantly increased as well as their actual knowledge or performance. Qualitative findings provide insight into how participants perceived the authenticity of the simulation experiences as well as suggestions regarding dosage and implementation. Limitations, implications for teacher education, and future research are discussed.

Although approximately a third of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) also experience a mental health concern, caregivers often miss early identification of these issues. In this perspective piece, we present an outline for a mental health literacy program that can enhance existing training approaches for caregivers of individuals with IDD. We describe three processes of the Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy (MHAA) curriculum and detail how it provides a strong preventative model to train caregivers to increase their mental health literacy. In describing these processes, we provide illustrative examples and conclude by providing a brief vignette that highlights how this process could be used by caregivers to help reduce mental health concerns in individuals with IDD.

Mental health literacy (MHL) training is essential in college environments. These programs are commonly delivered in-person via workshops or for-credit courses. Campuses now seek high-quality online options. We compare the effectiveness of a for-credit MHL course against a comparison course, focusing on whether online asynchronous delivery was as effective as in-person synchronous delivery. This quasi-experimental pretest/posttest treatment/comparison study included 1049 participants across five semesters (pre-COVID-19) who were 18 years or older and self-selected enrollment in a Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy (MHAA) course (treatment; n = 474) or a general lifespan development course (comparison; n = 575). Using linear mixed effect modeling, changes in MHL were compared across groups and across online/in-person modalities. Students in the treatment group significantly increased their MHL knowledge ([beta][subscript Identifying] = 0.49, p < 0.001; [beta][subscript Locating] = 0.32, p < 0.001; [beta][subscript Responding] = 0.46, p < 0.001) and self-efficacy ([beta] = 0.27, p < 0.001), and treatment effects did not differ across modalities. With increased concern regarding mental health issues of isolated college students during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study supports the efficacy of delivering MHL courses online.

BackgroundMethodsResultsConclusionsPrevious research has demonstrated that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience a variety of barriers in accessing mental health care and that family caregivers often play an integral role in helping individuals with IDD navigate these systems. However, little research has focused on family caregivers’ perceptions of accessing mental health services.To better understand their perspectives, we analyzed responses to an open-ended question about challenges to accessing mental health resources for adults with IDD from 208 family caregivers. Responses were analyzed using a team-based approach to qualitative data analysis.We identified five themes that capture both systematic issues and personal or interpersonal challenges that reduce access to high quality mental health care among adults with IDD. In addition to the barriers, we also identified some accounts of families succeeding in accessing adequate mental health care.We offer practical implications for research, policy, and practice that can help reduce barriers to mental health care for adults with IDD. Terminal nucleotidyltransferases add nucleotides to the 3′ end of RNA to modify their stability and function. In Caenorhabditis elegans , the terminal uridyltransferases/poly(U) polymerases PUP-1 (aka CID-1, CDE-1), PUP-2, and PUP-3 affect germline identity, survival, and development. Here, we identify small RNA (sRNA) and mRNA targets of these PUPs and of a fourth predicted poly(U) polymerase, F43E2.1/PUP-4. Using genetic and RNA sequencing approaches, we identify RNA targets of each PUP and the U-tail frequency and length of those targets. At the whole organism level, PUP-1 is responsible for most sRNA U-tailing, and other PUPs contribute to modifying discrete subsets of sRNAs. Moreover, the expression of PUP-2, PUP-3, and especially PUP-4 limits uridylation on some sRNAs. The relationship between uridylation status and sRNA abundance suggests that U-tailing can have a negative or positive effect on abundance depending on context. sRNAs modified by PUP activity primarily target mRNAs that are ubiquitously expressed or most highly expressed in the germline. mRNA data obtained with a Nanopore-based method reveal that the addition of U-tails to nonadenylated mRNA is substantially reduced in the absence of PUP-3. Overall, this work identifies PUP RNA targets, defines the effect of uridylation loss on RNA abundance, and reveals the complexity of PUP regulation in C. elegans development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article "Do nonglycaemic effects such as weight loss account for HbA1c lowering with efpeglenatide?: Insights from the AMPLITUDE‐O trial" published in Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism explores the impact of the GLP‐1 RA efpeglenatide on HbA1c levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The study found that efpeglenatide significantly reduced HbA1c levels by 1.46% within 3 months, along with other positive effects on weight, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other health markers. However, the analysis revealed that less than 12% of efpeglenatide's effect on HbA1c could be explained by its impact on weight loss and other nonglycaemic factors. The study suggests that the glycaemic effect of efpeglenatide is primarily due to its incretin-related effects, with weight loss playing a modest role. [Extracted from the article]

Bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, therefore there is an urgent need for new classes of antibiotics to fight antibiotic resistance. Mammals do not express Na -acetyl-L-ornithine deacetylase (ArgE), an enzyme that is critical for bacterial survival and growth, thus ArgE represents a promising new antibiotic drug target, as inhibitors would not suffer from mechanism-based toxicity. A new ninhydrin-based assay was designed and validated that included the synthesis of the substrate analog N5, N5-di-methyl Na-acetyl-L-ornithine (kcat/Km = 7.32 ± 0.94 χ 104M-1s-1). This new assay enabled the screening of potential inhibitors that absorb in the UV region, and thus is superior to the established 214 nm assay. Using this new ninhydrin-based assay, captopril was confirmed as an ArgE inhibitor (IC50 = 58.7 μM; Ki = 37.1 ± 0.85 μM), and a number of phenylboronic acid derivatives were identified as inhibitors, including 4(diethylamino)phenylboronic acid (IC50 = 50.1 μM). Selected inhibitors were also tested in a thermal shift assay with ArgE using SYPRO Orange dye against Escherichia coli ArgE to observe the stability of the enzyme in the presence of inhibitors (captopril Ki = 35.9 ± 5.1 μM). The active site structure of di-Zn EcArgE was confirmed using X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and we reported two X-ray crystal structures of E. coli ArgE. In summary, we describe the development of a new ninhydrin-based assay for ArgE, the identification of captopril and phenylboronic acids as ArgE inhibitors, thermal shift studies with ArgE + captopril, and the first two published crystal structures of ArgE (mono-Zn and di-Zn). Background Patients resuscitated from out‐of‐hospital circulatory arrest (OHCA) frequently have cardiopulmonary resuscitation injuries identifiable by computed tomography, although the prevalence, types of injury, and effects on clinical outcomes are poorly characterized. Methods and Results We assessed the prevalence of resuscitation‐associated injuries in a prospective, observational study of a head‐to‐pelvis sudden‐death computed tomography scan within 6 hours of successful OHCA resuscitation. Primary outcomes included total injuries and time‐critical injuries (such as organ laceration). Exploratory outcomes were injury associations with mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation and survival to discharge. Among 104 patients with OHCA (age 56±15 years, 30% women), 58% had bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and total cardiopulmonary resuscitation time was 15±11 minutes. The prevalence of resuscitation‐associated injury was high (81%), including 15 patients (14%) with time‐critical findings. Patients with resuscitation injury were older (58±15 versus 46±13 years; P

College honors courses provide an opportunity to tackle controversial topics in an atmosphere that encourages active learning, critical thinking, and open discussion. This venue is particularly appropriate for examining the debate about teaching intelligent design (ID) in public school science classes. A one-credit honors enrichment seminar taught at the University of North Carolina Wilmington provides a model, with associated successes and challenges, for addressing the controversy. This interdisciplinary course consisted primarily of discussions based on a set of weekly readings that presented contrasting viewpoints on evolution and naturalism, ID, theology, and educational issues. In preparation for each class, students constructed charts contrasting the views of each writer on key points presented in the readings and summarizing their own responses. Discussion focused on a set of questions arising from the readings and designed to provoke debate. The "Kitzmiller v. Dover" decision served as a final case study; each student prepared a final paper defending or criticizing Judge Jones' decision in the Dover court case. Prior to the course, some students had not heard of ID and many had limited knowledge of evolution. The course improved student knowledge of evolution, ID, and the issues involved in the controversy, preparing them to make informed political decisions. Challenges included the uneven level of knowledge about evolution among students in this non-science course and the time constraints of a 1-credit course. In addition, because I had decided to serve as a facilitator and not press my opinions, misconceptions were more difficult to correct, although the variety of disciplines represented by the students allowed them to correct one another.

Experiential learning can be an effective way to teach many concepts, and evolution is no exception. We describe the pedagogical techniques, class structure and learning objectives, travel logistics, and impact of three undergraduate honors-level experiential learning seminars that combined teaching topics related to evolution with a field trip to the Galápagos Islands. One class took place in Spring 2002 focusing on animal behavior, biodiversity, and evolution (13 students), and the other two were held in Spring 2009, with one seminar focusing on international environmental policymaking (3 students) and the other on how the natural history of the Galápagos influenced the development of Darwin's thought (7 students). Qualitative comments from students illustrate both short and long term impact of the class on learning about evolution.

AbstractObjective: To assess possible moderating variables that influence the effectiveness of a college-based mental health literacy curriculum, Mental Health Awareness and Advocacy (MHAA). Participants: Students at a Western University in the United States (MHAA treatment group: N = 474; Comparison group: N = 575). Methods: Using a non-randomized, quasi-experimental design over six semesters (2017–2019), students in the treatment and control groups reported on key demographic factors, experiences with mental health, and their knowledge, self-efficacy, and behaviors related to mental health literacy in a pretest/post-test format. Linear mixed effects models were used to assess moderation. Results: MHAA curriculum’s efficacy varied based on participants’ current depression and anxiety levels, whether they had prior personal experience with a mental health concern, whether they had been diagnosed with a mental health concern, and whether they had experienced suicidal thoughts. Conclusions: Reducing anxiety and depression among students may increase the efficacy of the MHAA program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Students of color, especially Black males identified as having emotional behavior disorders (EBD), are overrepresented in exclusionary practices. Exclusionary practices, such as in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, and expulsion, negatively impact academic and social–emotional–behavioral outcomes for all students, especially students with EBD. This article identifies the overlapping principles of culturally responsive teaching and culturally responsive pedagogy as theorized by Gay and Ladson-Billings so that teachers of students of color identified with EBD can better support the specific learning needs of their students. These principles are explicitly applied to behavior-specific praise and error corrections, two evidence-based classroom behavioral management practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Direct Support Professionals (DSP) work closely with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and can play an important role in helping these individuals get treatment when they are also experiencing mental health concerns (MHC). We employed a systematic review search techniques to identify 15 empirical articles that assessed the outcomes of training programs for DSP that addressed aspects of mental health among individuals with I/DD. There was a wide diversity in the trainings, including both staff and individuals with I/DD focused trainings, workshop formats and intervention formats, and trainings varying in length. Each article found benefits of the training improved knowledge and confidence for the DSP and/or decreased mental health issue symptoms or behaviors for individuals with I/DD. The research reviewed contained various strengths in methodology including mixed methods designs and long follow-up periods; however, there were also pervasive limitations that reflect a need for the field as a whole to devote a more concentrated and collaborative effort to providing high-quality training on the mental health aspects of individuals with I/DD for DSP. Aims: To estimate the incidence of a major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) and a composite kidney outcome across estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine albumin‐to‐creatinine ratio (UACR) levels, and to determine whether efpeglenatide's effect varies with these indices. Materials and Methods: AMPLITUDE‐O trial data were used to estimate the relationship of eGFR, UACR, and Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) category to the hazard of MACE and the kidney composite. Interactions on these outcomes between eGFR and the UACR, and between each of these variables and efpeglenatide were also assessed. Results: Baseline eGFR and UACR were available for 3983 participants (mean age 64.5 years). During a median follow‐up of 1.8 years, the hazards of MACE and the kidney composite for the lowest versus highest eGFR third were 1.6 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.2, 2.2) and 2.3 (95% CI 1.9, 2.8), respectively. The hazards for the highest versus the lowest UACR third were 2.3 (95% CI 1.8, 3.1) and 18.0 (95% CI 12.7, 25.5), respectively, and for the high‐ versus low‐risk KDIGO categories the hazards were 2.4 (95% CI 1.8, 3.1) and 16.0 (95% CI 11.6, 22.0), respectively. eGFR and UACR were independent determinants of both outcomes, but negatively interacted with each other for the kidney outcome. Efpeglenatide's effect on both outcomes did not vary with any kidney disease measure (all interaction p values ≥0.26). Conclusions: In high‐risk people with diabetes, eGFR, UACR, and KDIGO category have different relationships to incident cardiovascular and kidney outcomes.
