Abstract The purpose of this study was to clarify sex differences in the inhibition of sympathetic vasomotor outflow which is caused by the loading of cardiopulmonary baroreceptors. Ten young males and ten age-matched females participated. The participants underwent a passive leg raising (PLR) test wherein they were positioned supine (baseline, 0º), and their lower limbs were lifted passively at 10º, 20º, 30º, and 40º. Each angle lasted for 3 min. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) was recorded via microneurography of the left radial nerve. Baseline MSNA was lower in females compared to males. MSNA burst frequency was decreased during the PLR in both males (− 6.2 ± 0.4 bursts/min at 40º) and females (− 6.5 ± 0.4 bursts/min at 40º), but no significant difference was detected between the two groups (P = 0.61). These results suggest that sex has minimal influence on the inhibition of sympathetic vasomotor outflow during the loading of cardiopulmonary baroreceptors in young individuals.

In the present study, a tandem-bicycle ergometer was developed, because it is believed that such an ergometer can be used to eliminate differences in signaling between single- and tandem-exercise in cardiorespiratory responses, and is able to quantify interdependence in one load. It is necessary to verify whether cardiorespiratory responses to submaximal exercise are the same between single and tandem-bicycle ergometers. Accordingly, we compared cardiorespiratory variables during exercise in three conditions: 1) with a general bicycle single saddle using a general bicycle ergometer, 2) with a tandem bicycle front saddle using a tandem ergometer, and 3) with a tandem bicycle rear saddle using a tandem ergometer. Eleven healthy males participated in this study. The subjects exercised for 15 min at three intensities (1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 kp) in each condition. The pedaling rate was constantly kept at 60 rpm. Heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (VO2), and the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured during the last minute of each intensity. There were no significant differences in the variables HR, VO2, and RPE at each load among the three conditions. The ranges of coefficient of variation (CV) values were 3.0 - 4.8%: HR and 4.2 - 5.1%: VO2. It was reported that between-day CV for HR and VO2 during treadmill running was 1.0 - 10.7% and 1.9 - 11.6%. Given these CV values of present and previous studies, it can be seen that physiological response is stable during developed tandem-bicycle ergometer exercise. These results suggest that cardiorespiratory responses to exercise are at comparable levels between a normal bicycle ergometer and the newly developed tandem-bicycle ergometer.

This is a brief review of recent evidence concerning the influences of respiratory muscle fatigue on the circulatory response to exercise, endurance exercise performance and associated peripheral locomotor muscle fatigue. Inspiratory muscle fatigue enhances muscle sympathetic vasomotor outflow and blood pressure during exercise. As a consequence, blood flow and oxygen transport to the working limbs are reduced, and this exacerbates the development of peripheral muscle fatigue and compromises endurance performance. These effects are relevant for healthy humans performing high intensity endurance, and, even at mild intensities, for patients with pulmonary disease and heart failure.

We hypothesized that, compared with young males, young females have a smaller decrease in blood flow to the inactive limb, accompanied by a smaller increase in arterial blood pressure, during dynamic exercise with increased inspiratory muscle work. Young males and females performed dynamic kneeextension and -flexion exercises for 10 min (spontaneous breathing for 5 min and voluntary hyperpnoea with or without inspiratory resistance for 5 min). Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and mean blood flow (MBF) in the brachial artery were continuously measured by means of finger photoplethysmography and Doppler ultrasound, respectively. No sex differences were found in the ΔMAP and ΔMBF (Δ: from baseline) during exercise without inspiratory resistance. In contrast, the ΔMAP during exercise with inspiratory resistive breathing was greater (P < 0.05) in males (+31.3 ± 2.1 mmHg, mean ± SE) than females (+18.9 ± 3.2 mmHg). The MBF during exercise with inspiratory resistance did not change in males (–4.4 ± 10.6 mL/min), whereas it significantly increased in females (+25.2 ± 15.4 mL/min). These results suggest that an attenuated inspiratory muscle-induced metaboreflex in young females affects blood flow distribution during submaximal dynamic leg exercise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is reduced during low-intensity dynamic leg exercise in young males. It is suggested that this inhibition is mediated by loading of the cardiopulmonary baroreceptors. The purpose of this study was to clarify the impact of age on MSNA during dynamic leg exercise. Nine younger males (YM, mean ± SD, 20 ± 1 years) and nine older males (OM, 72 ± 3 years) completed the study. The subjects performed two 4-min cycling exercises at 10% of their heart rate reserve using a cycle ergometer in a semirecumbent position (MSNA and estimated central venous pressure (eCVP) trials). MSNA was recorded via microneurography of the left radial nerve. The CVP was estimated based on peripheral venous pressure, which was monitored using a cannula in the right large antecubital vein. The magnitude of the increase in mean arterial blood pressure during leg cycling was larger in OM (+9.3 ± 5.5 mmHg) compared with YM (+2.8 ± 4.7 mmHg). MSNA burst frequency was decreased during cycling in both YM (-8.1 ± 3.8 bursts/min) and OM (-10.6 ± 3.3 bursts/min), but no significant difference was found between the two groups. The eCVP increased during exercise in both groups, and there was no difference in the changes in eCVP between YM (+1.1 ± 0.4 mmHg) and OM (+1.2 ± 0.7 mmHg). These data indicate that inhibition of sympathetic vasomotor outflow during low-intensity cycling appears inOMas seen in YM. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) decreases during leg cycling at low intensity because of muscle pump-induced increases in venous return and loading of the cardiopulmonary baroreceptors. However, MSNA increases during leg cycling when exercise is above moderate intensity or for a long duration, suggesting that the sympathoinhibitory effect of the cardiopulmonary baroreflex can be overridden by a powerful sympathoexcitatory drive, such as the skeletal muscle metaboreflex. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that high-intensity muscle metaboreflex activation attenuates muscle pump-induced inhibition of MSNA during leg cycling. MSNA (left radial nerve) was recorded during graded isolation of the muscle metaboreflex in the forearm with postexercise ischemia (PEI) after low (PEI-L)- and high (PEI-H)-intensity isometric handgrip exercise (20% and 40% maximum voluntary contraction, respectively). Leg cycling (15-20 W) was performed alone and during each PEI trial (PEI-L+Cycling, PEI-H+Cycling). Cycling alone induced a significant decrease in MSNA burst frequency (BF) and total activity (TA). MSNA BF and TA also decreased when cycling was performed during PEI-L. However, the magnitude of decrease in MSNA during PEI-L+Cycling [ΔBF: -19 ± 2% (P < 0.001), ΔTA: -25 ± 4% (P < 0.001); mean ± SE] was less than that during cycling alone [ΔBF: -39 ± 5% (P = 0.003), ΔTA: -45 ± 5% (P = 0.002)]. More importantly, MSNA did not decrease during cycling with PEI-H [ΔBF: -1 ± 2% (P = 0.845), ΔTA: +2 ± 3% (P = 0.959)]. These results suggest that muscle pump-induced inhibition of sympathetic vasomotor outflow during low-intensity leg cycling is attenuated by muscle metaboreflex activation in an intensity-dependent manner. Previous studies have shown that muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is reduced during low- and mild-intensity dynamic leg exercise. It has been suggested that such inhibition is mediated by loading of the cardiopulmonary baroreceptors and that this effect is overridden by muscle metaboreflex activation with higher-intensity exercise. However, limited data are available regarding the interaction between the cardiopulmonary baroreflex and the muscle metaboreflex. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that cardiopulmonary baroreflex-mediated inhibition of MSNA is attenuated during high-intensity muscle metaboreflex activation. In nine young men, MSNA (right peroneal nerve), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and thoracic impedance were recorded. Graded isolation of muscle metaboreflex activation was achieved via postexercise ischemia (PEI) following low (PEI-L)-, moderate (PEI-M)-, and high (PEI-H)-intensity isometric handgrip performed at 20, 30, and 40% maximum voluntary contraction, respectively. Lower-body positive pressure (LBPP, +10 Torr) was applied at rest and during PEI, to load the cardiopulmonary baroreceptors. Handgrip exercise elicited intensity-dependent increases in MSNA and MAP that were maintained during PEI, indicating a graded muscle metaboreflex activation. LBPP at rest significantly decreased MSNA burst frequency (BF: -36.7 ± 4.7%, mean ± SE, P < 0.05), whereas MAP was unchanged. When LBPP was applied during PEI, MSNA BF decreased significantly at PEI-L (-40.0 ± 9.2%, P < 0.05) and PEI-M (-27.0 ± 6.3%, P < 0.05), but not at PEI-H (+1.9 ± 7.1%, P > 0.05). These results suggest that low- and moderate-intensity muscle metaboreflex activation does not modulate the inhibition of MSNA by cardiopulmonary baroreceptor loading, whereas high-intensity metaboreflex activation can override cardiopulmonary baroreflex-mediated inhibition of sympathetic vasomotor outflow. In the current study, light- to moderate-intensity muscle metaboreflex activation did not modulate the suppression of muscle sympathetic nerve activity by cardiopulmonary baroreceptor loading, whereas high-intensity muscle metaboreflex activation attenuated the cardiopulmonary baroreflex-mediated inhibition of muscle sympathetic nerve activity. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the influence of inspiratory resistive breathing during exercise under hypoxic conditions on muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and blood pressure (BP). Six healthy males completed this study. The subjects performed a submaximal exercise test using a cycle ergometer in a semirecumbent position under normoxic [inspired oxygen fraction (FIO2) = 0.21] and hypoxic (FIO2 = 0.12- 0.13) conditions. The subjects carried out two 10-min exercises at 40% peak oxygen uptake [spontaneous breathing for 5 min and voluntary breathing with inspiratory resistance for 5 min (breathing frequency: 60 breaths/min, inspiratory and expiratory times were set at 0.5 s each)]. MSNA was recorded via microneurography of the right median nerve at the elbow. A progressive increase in MSNA burst frequency (BF) during leg-cycling exercise with inspiratory resistance in normoxia and hypoxia were accompanied by an augmentation of BP. The increased MSNA BF and mean arterial BP (MBP) during exercise with inspiratory resistive breathing in hypoxia (MSNA BF, 55.7 ± 1.4 bursts/min, MBP, 134.3 ± 6.6 mmHg) were higher than those in normoxia (MSNA BF, 39.2 ± 1.8 bursts/min, MBP, 123.6 ± 4.5 mmHg). These results suggest that an enhancement of inspiratory muscle activity under hypoxic condition leads to large increases in muscle sympathetic vasomotor outflow and BP during dynamic leg exercise. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the influence of inspiratory muscle fatigue on muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and blood pressure (BP) response during submaximal exercise. We hypothesized that inspiratory muscle fatigue would elicit increases in sympathetic vasoconstrictor outflow and BP during dynamic leg exercise. The subjects carried out four submaximal exercise tests: two were maximal inspiratory pressure (PImax) tests and two were MSNA tests. In the PImax tests, the subjects performed two 10-min exercises at 40% peak oxygen uptake using a cycle ergometer in a semirecumbent position [spontaneous breathing for 5 min and with or without inspiratory resistive breathing for 5 min (breathing frequency: 60 breaths/min, inspiratory and expiratory times were each set at 0.5 s)]. Before and immediately after exercise, PImax was estimated. In MSNA tests, the subjects performed two 15-min exercises (spontaneous breathing for 5 min, with or without inspiratory resistive breathing for 5 min, and spontaneous breathing for 5 min). MSNA was recorded via microneurography of the right median nerve at the elbow. PImax decreased following exercise with resistive breathing, whereas no change was found without resistance. The time-dependent increase in MSNA burst frequency (BF) appeared during exercise with inspiratory resistive breathing, accompanied by an augmentation of diastolic BP (DBP) (with resistance: MSNA, BF +83.4%; DBP, +23.8%; without resistance: MSNA BF, +19.2%; DBP, -0.4%, from spontaneous breathing during exercise). Some recreational activities, such as hiking or crosscountry running, are performed at altitude. Recent studies have reported a reduction of arterial blood pressure in patients with metabolic syndrome (16,23). From these studies, it has been supposed that exposure to hypoxia could be used to reduce cardiovascular risk factors (1,24).
