Abstract

In this paper, a preliminary evaluation study is conducted, which aiming to investigate the radar cross-section (RCS) value that is capable to be used as an input parameter for Artificial Neural network (ANN) backpropagation for foreign object debris (FOD) size classification. The experimental work procedure for dataset acquisition is described. The FOD simulator is used as the FOD target which is made of metal cylinder shape with nine various dimensions and its RCS is defined by using Maxwell’s equation. The location varying backscattered electromagnetic field from each target is measured for RCS calibration purposes. It is found that by using the received signal from radar, which is the RCS of the target and its locations, it can be utilized as input parameters of backpropagation algorithms. The ANN classification application is to define its size by the ranges; small (-30.99 to -21 dBsm), medium (-20.99 to -11 dBsm), and large (-10.99 to 0 dBsm). The interference signal getting from measurement (22.46 to 25.2 dBsm) exhibited good reflectivity behavior. The acquired input showed to be useful for ANN for FOD size classification. 26. The TRMM Precipitation Radar: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract

Although studies on the feasibility of spaceborne weather radar date back to the 1960's, it was only with the launch of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Satellite in November 1997 that the first weather radar was placed into low earth orbit. The long delay between the initial concept and implementation was caused not only by the demanding requirements of active sensors such as mass, power, and reliability, but because of scientific and technological challenges. For example, the demand for adequate spatial resolution arises from the need to resolve the horizontal structure of convective storm cells and to avoid surface contamination of the rain return at off-nadir angles. To achieve a horizontal resolution on the order of 4 km from low earth orbit with a modest antenna size of 2 m requires the use of a much higher frequency (Ku-band) than those typically used for ground-based weather radars (S- and C-band). Higher frequencies are subject to higher attenuation. As Hitschfeld and Bordan (1954) showed in their classic paper, attenuation correction with a single-wavelength radar is inherently unstable at high attenuations unless the drop size distribution and the radar constant are known precisely. Since these conditions are seldom met, much work over the last decade has been devoted to formulating and testing alternative methods of attenuation correction. The operational method used in the TRMM radar processing is discussed in section 3 of the paper.

Abstract

What is known and objective This study aimed to elucidate the pharmacokinetics of erlotinib in Japanese patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer ( NSCLC) and to investigate the relationship between erlotinib exposure and the occurrence of interstitial lung disease ( ILD)-like events. Methods Population pharmacokinetics analysis was performed using nonlinear mixed-effects modelling software ( NONMEM) based on 348 plasma samples from 97 patients obtained in two phase II clinical studies. Individual empirical Bayesian estimates ( EBEs) of apparent oral clearance ( CL/F) and Cmax were compared between the patients who developed and did not develop ILD-like events. Results A 1-compartment model with first-order absorption and first-order elimination was used to describe the plasma concentrations of erlotinib. The estimated population pharmacokinetics parameters were as follows: 4·71 L/h for CL/F, 163 L for apparent volume of distribution (Vc/F) and 1·97 h−1 for absorption rate constant ( Ka). Total bilirubin ( TBIL) and alpha 1-acid glycoprotein ( AGP) were identified as statistically significant covariates for CL/F. No differences in CL/F and Cmax were observed between the patients with ILD-like events and those without ILD-like events. What is new and conclusions A population pharmacokinetics model of erlotinib was developed and validated in Japanese patients. There was no relationship between exposure of erlotinib before the occurrence of ILD-like events and the occurrence of ILD-like events when erlotinib was administered at the same dosage. The high plasma concentration of erlotinib reported in patients after the onset of ILD-like events may be explained by CL/F decrease which occurs along with increasing levels of AGP which was identified as a covariate for CL/F. 48. Portable continuous glucose monitoring systems with implantable fluorescent hydrogel microfibers.

Abstract

We present a portable glucose monitoring system comprised of an implantable fluorescent-hydrogel sensor, wearable photo detector, microcontroller, wireless device and software for transdermal, continuous glucose monitoring. Although we showed the potential of the fluorescent-hydrogel fibers for applying to long-term, implanted glucose monitoring, “true” continuous glucose monitoring with a portable monitoring system has yet to be realized. In the system that we propose here, the calculated glucose values show a good correlation with the actual blood glucose concentrations. The portable device attached to the ear of a rat and measured the fluorescence intensity for three days. 49. Nano-patterned hydrogel reduced inflammatory effects in subcutaneous tissue.

Abstract

We present a nano-patterned poly-acrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel that can reduce inflammatory effects after subcutaneous implantation. Although hydrogel is considered as an excellent biomaterial for implants due to its biocompatibility, hydrogel still induces inflammation after implantation. To enhance biocompatibility for subcutaneous implantable sensors, we modified hydrogel surface with nano-patterns using simple molding process. To test the anti-inflammatory effect, we implanted the samples to rat's back. Since macrophages play an important role in the immune response and development of encapsulation after inflammation reaction, we counted macrophages neighboring the implanted nano-patterned hydrogels after 3 and 7 days and measured thickness of encapsulation after 21 days from implantation. We found that the sample with the line-and-space pattern of 600 nm in space successfully suppressed the inflammation reaction.
