The aim of this research is to provide bioclimatic design suggestions to improve the thermal comfort of people in hot and humid climates according to the BWh (hot desert climate) Köppen climate classification. The city of Minia is considered one of Egypt’s hot desert regions. This study considered two main variables to achieve thermal comfort according to air velocity and temperature. To select the best bioclimatic design tactic, the findings are reviewed and plotted on the Climate Consultant (CC) Bioclimatic Chart and the Mahoney Table (MT). The proposed procedures are presented as figures relating to the approaches and are examined independently. We conclude that specific bioclimatic design strategies have been applied through the extensive study presented in this paper for Minia City, which can be exported to other regions with comparable climates. These strategies are practically and effectively considered functional architectural approaches that can improve thermal comfort for people. The two tools CC and MT are compared based on 27 recommended strategies that can be achieved according to the bioclimatic parameters that were studied. They agreed with 30% as good natural ventilation, passive solar heating with a high percentage that reached 10% for each. Where there is a difference of 20 recommendations to 70%, this represents other factors or recommendations such as shading with which it is proposed in MT as well as other parameters.

The presented study deals with the space located in the attic of an older building after reconstruction. Originally, the attic space was not used, as it did not have sufficient headroom. The reconstruction was designed in such a way that the entire original pitched roof was gradually raised by 1.2 meters in parts, creating a full-fledged space under the pitched pitched roof. The visual connection of the interior space with the exterior was ensured by continuous strips of vertical windows around the perimeter of the building, each window measuring 600x600 mm. The space is also illuminated by several skylights at roof level, which, although they ensure sufficient penetration of daylight from above into the interior, at the same time allow for considerably unpleasant overheating. The task was to find a way to optimize the size of transparent surfaces and determine the accumulation of building structures in order to achieve an acceptable cumulative effect of daylight and overheating, i.e., permissible increase in indoor air temperature in summer. It means trying to theoretically design a suitable and comfortable interior space in the attic in an already existing building.

Discarded medical face masks endanger the environment worldwide. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of a shredded face mask (SFM) at 0% (control mix), 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% by volume of concrete in the form of pieces that were 1 cm wide and 2 cm long on the properties of fresh and hardened concrete. After performing experimental testing on the materials, finite element masonry prisms with dimensions of 400 × 200 × 560 mm3 were modeled on the ANSYS platform. Four prisms with different fabric contents were numerically examined to study the compressive behavior, and 12 prisms with three different mortar joints were analyzed under an incremental horizontal load in the presence of four vertical displacements of 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, and 4.5 mm. The results revealed that increasing the SFM content in concrete led to a decrease in fresh and hardened concrete properties, including density, slump, split‐tensile strength, and compressive strength, by 9.5%, 20%, 24%, and 34%, respectively, compared with the control concrete at 0.5%. Moreover, the addition of 0.5% SFMs to the prism bricks reduced the maximum compressive load, deflection, and strain energy by 24%, 10%, and 39%, respectively. Altering the mortar type and vertical load affected the lateral cyclic behavior of the prisms. Compared with the M3 prism subjected to the same axial displacement, the M2 prism had 21.36%, 11%, 27.2%, and 10.48% higher lateral peak load, lateral peak displacement, equivalent stress, and strain energy, respectively. Furthermore, the lateral stiffness of the prism increases as the axial pressure increases. The lateral peak load of the M3 prism measured at 1.0, 3.0, and 4.5 mm axial displacement was raised by 60%, 142%, and 182%, respectively, as compared with the same prism at 0.5 mm axial displacement. The outcome provides a feasible concept for reusing masks in concrete construction with controllable strength deterioration on the masonry prism at 0.5% recycled SFM, resulting in attractive responses of these composites at the nonstructural scale [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper could be considered as a general overview of current examples of realization, research, in architecture which could be called parasitic. Also, as an outline of possible new perspectives on current issues through the biomimicry design philosophy. The aim was also to clearly articulate the intent of the research I am dealing with while opening up a discourse on the subject.

Together with the natural environment, the built, artificial environment represents a barrier to the wind fluxes. Especially in the densely built cities, the wind flow pattern and the wind speed are considerably altered by buildings, which can lead to zones of an accelerated wind and turbulent flow. Incorporating the wind into the early conceptual stage of architectural design, this reciprocal interaction of the built environment and the wind fluxes can be analyzed and controlled to create zones of calmer wind around buildings. Presently, building envelopes are designed to withstand extreme load cases, which, however, demands thicker and bulkier structures. The subject of this study is a proposal and investigation of a lightweight, adaptive building envelope, which is able of a local, passive morphing in the wind. This local shape change leads to creating a textured, dimpled building surface; the final shape depends on the wind direction and force. The wind-induced dimpled surface influences the wind flow around the building, as well as surface wind pressure acting on the building, and the drag force. The analysis of three fundamental building shapes using the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation is performed for the variants with and without the proposed adaptive envelope. Concluding from the wind simulations, the wind flow can be decelerated, the turbulence reduced, and calmer zones around buildings can be created, by certain conditions. Moreover, the envelope, morphing with the instant wind force, can contribute to the reduction of the surface wind suction on buildings. Strikingly, the dimpled geometry of the wind-adaptive envelope can decrease the wind drag force by up to 28.4 %, which is again dependent on the global form, as well as the initial wind speed.

The paper provides information on the solution of project supported by the Scientific Grant Agency of VEGA of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of Slovak Republic and of the Slovak Academy of Sciences of Slovak Republic. There is project: VEGA 1/0674/18. This research project is programmed for the years 2018 to 2021. In this paper are presented information on the results obtained in 2019, solution of this project objectives and project solution. The results are presented in realized publications. We focused mainly on the presentation of major publications, articles in domestic and foreign journals, articles in conference proceedings with an emphasis on publications that are indexed in the WOS and SCOPUS databases.

There are problems with historical buildings when changing the thermal insulation properties of buildings. The Energy Efficiency Act exempted historic buildings from certification. Not all old, historic buildings have monument protection. It is necessary to take into account the above mentioned facts in case of renovation and reconstruction of an old building. Otherwise, a normal building is approached and a building of historical value is treated differently. Methods hidden insulation, which preserves the authenticity of cultural monuments and real estate in the heritage areas, is a current challenge of heritage practice. The sustainability of the operation of historic buildings ultimately means the preservation and appropriate use of the heritage fund. Fortunately, the list of such interventions that do not jeopardize the monumental values or the use of the building is gradually increasing. This is mainly due to modern, increasingly sophisticated materials and technologies. In this paper we offer a basic overview of the most frequently used and practice-tested interventions in historical buildings, but we focus on details.

Large-diameter bored piles can safely transmit loads from structures by skin friction to the surrounding soil strata and end bearing at the bedrock layer, thereby providing a high compressive capacity. High-Strain Dynamic Testing (HSDT) provides a unique alternative technique to traditional Static Load Testing (SLT) for determining the static compressive resistance of the bored piles, considering its quicker performance and significant cost reductions. This article's main objective is to numerically explore the performance of large-diameter bored piles during the HSDT and to understand their dynamic behavior under an axial compressive impact force. This research is based on testing pile foundations for reinforced concrete mixed-use towers in the coastal zone of New Alamein City, Egypt. The tested pile is a 1.20 m diameter bored pile. Numerical modeling is performed to simulate both the HSDT and the SLT for two piles at the same site. Non-linear axisymmetric finite element modeling is employed to validate both test records and develop some sort of matching between the two tests. As lumped models, the developed numerical models use the signal-matching process, which is conducted by varying and adopting the strength parameters and deformation characteristics of the ground or soil deposit and the soil–pile interface. The predicted load-displacement curves, developed from analyzing dynamic records employing the Modified Unloading Point (MUP) method, are consistent with the field records. The verified non-linear models are utilized to accomplish a comparative parametric analysis to better understand the drop-mass system aspects. The analysis results emphasize the significance of employing adequate impact energy (i.e., dropping height and mass) to move the pile top to a sufficient extent to mobilize its full resistance. However, a longer impact duration, i.e., larger mass, is more effective for achieving a deeper high-strain wave. The impact load should be developed by a larger drop mass with a lower drop height, not a smaller drop mass with a higher drop height. The results also indicate that, for relatively longer piles, the skin friction of the upper layers surrounding the pile shaft is fully mobilized, whereas the skin resistance of the lower layers is not fully mobilized, regarding the stress wave phenomenon effect. Hollow-core precast prestressed reinforced concrete (HCPPRC) slabs have been widely available since the 1980s in different structures due to many advantages. Since no shear reinforcement is arranged in HCPPRC slabs before casting, concrete itself provides the shear resistance, especially in the zones close to the supports, which are the most popular regions for shear failure. This experimental study aims to investigate some shear strengthening techniques for HCPPRC slabs, including using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets, concrete topping, filling 50% of the slab voids in shear zones with concrete, filling all shear zone voids with concrete, steel through anchors in shear zones, and mixing between filling 50% of the slab shear zone voids in addition to using steel anchors. The experimental program consists of two control specimens and six shear-strengthened specimens that were tested using two-line loads up to failure. Cracking load, cracking deflection, ultimate load, maximum deflection, and failure mode are recorded and discussed for all specimens. The results show that filling 50% and 100% of shear voids with concrete increases slab concrete strength by about 79% and 61.45%, respectively, while using steel through anchors decreases slab concrete strength. Moreover, filling 50% of the shear voids is the best technique for strengthening the shear capacity of HCPPRC slabs due to increasing the cross-section area of the slab's shear strength. Nowadays, among many existing reinforced concrete (RC) columns, it is impossible to find samples that work only as centrally compressed members – their vast majority work as eccentrically compressed members. On the other hand, the significant volumes of reconstruction in Ukraine will require studies of the work of various RC structures strengthened under different load levels. In addition to choosing the method of strengthening itself, the relevant tasks will be studies of bearing capacity, crack resistance, reliability (including residual resource) of structures, etc. This article presents the method of crack resistance experimental study of eccentrically compressed RC members. The proposed method was tested on unstrengthened (ordinary) and strengthened (in a stretched zone) RC columns; the results of experimental studies for ordinary and strengthened samples were also obtained. The columns were strengthened with a composite material (from many carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers) – the Sika Carbodur S512 strip. The feature of the crack resistance study of columns was that they were strengthened under the initial load level of 30 %. As a result of experimental research on the samples strengthened under load, we stated that the width of the crack decreased on average by about 36 % (at the comparable values of the active load). In turn, the average maximum length of cracks decreased to about 50 % of the height of the cross-section (for unstrengthened samples, this value was approximately 80 %), and the eccentric compressive ultimate load was increased by about 33 %. Historical building envelope is characterized by a large accumulation that impact is mainly by changing the inner surface temperature over time. The minimum value of the inner surface temperature is set Code requirements. In the case of thermal technology assessment of building envelope contemplates a steady state external temperature and internal environment, thereby neglecting the heat accumulation capacity of building envelopes. Monitoring surface temperature in real terms in situ shows the real behavior of the building envelope close to reality. The recorded data can be used to create a numerical model for the simulation.

The subject of the study presents the measurement of temperatures on surfaces of glass systems of existing structures and the surfaces of experimental glass systems obtained by dynamic simulation. Measurements were made in the test cells of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Technical University of Košice. The partial results of which are the basis for the comparison of the currently installed and experimentally designed glass systems using spectrally selective films. The proposed mathematical-physical model was simplified by replacing the sash, frame and its components with a homogenous element with minimal shape modifications, while this does not have a significant effect on the simulation results. The choice of the proposed glass system respects the need for reduction of solar gains in summer and heat losses in buildings in winter through the weakest part of the building envelope and indicates future energy savings in relation to cooling and heating costs with a view to optimizing light and thermal comfort.

Building skins are persistently exposed to changes in the weather, including the cases of weather extremes, increasing in frequency due to global climate change. As a consequence of the advancements of digital design tools, the integration of the weather conditions into the design process is much smoother. The impact of the ambient conditions on buildings and their structures can be digitally analyzed as early as in the conceptual design stage. These new design tools stimulate original ideas for shape-changing building skins, actively reacting to the dynamic weather conditions. In the paper, a digital design method is introduced, leading towards the design of a building skin, able of the passive shape adaptation when subjected to the wind. The designed building skin consists of a tensegrity structure where the tensioned elements are substituted by a tensile membrane, creating a self-equilibrated building skin element. In the previous research, a small prototype of this wind-adaptive element was created. The computer simulations are employed to predict the adaptive behavior of a bigger, full-scale building skin element. The before-mentioned building envelope becomes an active player in its surrounding environment, passively reacting to the wind in real-time, thanks to the geometric and material properties. Due to the local shape changes caused by the wind force, the wind can be perceived unconventionally through the adaptive building structure.

The article provides an analysis of removing moisture from the soil masonry walls. The chemical pressure insulation may be considered as one of the alternatives. This paper describes the chemical waterproofing and points to a case study, which is a small church in the town of Košice. Renovation of the church took place in two stages, made using pressure chemical insulation for chemical grouting of envelope masonry. The appropriateness and effectiveness of the applied chemical methods can be seen in the conclusions of this contribution.

Europe is experiencing a demographic change, resulting in a change in social structure. People are living longer and birth rates are declining. This changing structure in Europe poses special challenges for housing designers and builders. A new approach in the design of real estate must be created and implemented that caters for the future needs of the occupants of the living space in all phases and allows residents to remain self-sufficient in their "home" for as long as possible. In the earliest stages of design, the typical requirements for each phase of life of future, potential residents must already be considered. This is especially true for people with special protection needs, such as those with visual or hearing impairments.

When building physics simulations are done initial conditions express the actual hygrothermal state of building envelope. For the temperature field simulations initial condition is represented by the initial temperature in the body profile at the start of heat transfer. In-structure temperature varies quickly so temperature initial conditions are often neglected. Nevertheless in specific cases initial conditions have to be taken into an account even when simple temperature field simulations are done. The contribution shows various temperature initial conditions determination for insulated construction of outdoor test cell. Comparison of measured and calculated temperature profiles in structure shows correctness of start-up pre-calculation initial condition consideration

The use of Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) increased in the field of civil engineering throughout the last few decades. UHPFRC is being used considerably on a large scale in megastructure applications. High compressive and tensile strength permits reconstruction and optimization of the structural members. At the same time, its improved durability properties make it easier to extend the life of the design and can be used as thin layers, cladding, repairs, and column coverings. Although UHPC has an extremely high compressive strength, it exhibits very brittle fracture behavior compared to normal strength concrete (NSC). Since the ductility and fracture toughness of UHPC can be enhanced by adding fibers, the addition of fibers to production adds innovative features to UHPFRC structures and opens up new application areas for UHPFRC. The aim of this study is to investigate the axial behavior of square reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with UHPFRC jackets. Nineteen specimens were cast (1000 mm in height and a cross-sectional area of 150 × 150 mm, whose interface treatment methods were prepared through vertical grooving (VG), horizontal grooving (HG), and without grooving (NG), with the jacket thickness (20 mm and 40 mm) and the number of strengthened sides of the column (two, three, and four sides). The results show a brittle failure for all strengthened specimens. The UHPFRC-reinforced RC columns with vertical grooving (VG) showed a higher ultimate load capacity compared to the columns with horizontal grooving (HG) and the columns without grooving (NG). The horizontal grooving (HG) gives a better result than the jacket without grooving (NG) and increases the cohesion area between the jacket and the column for two and three of the RC columns' strengthened sides. But, in the case of strengthening the columns on four sides, the effect of confining the jacket to the column appears, and the grooving causes weakness in the body of the original column so that the jacket without grooving (NG) gives a better result than the jacket with horizontal grooving (HG). This paper presents a detailed analysis of the research into modern thermal energy storage systems dedicated to autonomous buildings. The paper systematises the current state of knowledge concerning thermal energy storage systems and their use of either phase change materials or sorption systems; it notes their benefits, drawbacks, application options, and potential directions for future development. The rapid proliferation of studies on installation systems, new composites, and phase change materials requires a systematisation of the subject related to short- and long-term thermal energy storage in building structures. This paper focuses on assessing the validity of the current improved thermal energy storage solutions for buildings with very high energy efficiency standards and buildings that are energy-independent. The paper presents the current results of the energy and economic analyses of the use of heat storage systems in buildings. This paper shows the optimal heat storage systems for autonomous buildings. Most of air heating and ventilating systems for passive houses inlet air in floors. It is assumed that a natural motion of air is led upwards, and so the right stratification of temperature in the space is ensured. However, in the case of excellently insulated buildings it is possible to assume that an upper inlet of air is also able to ensure the required layering of temperature. Within the experiment an influence of upper and down air inlet for temperature stratification in the space was followed. Night sensors of indoor air temperature are placed for measurement purposes. Measurements are done in the long term. The results from measurements show that both, vertical and horizontal stratification of temperature in rooms of passive houses are equal regardless of the fact, which system of air inlet is used.

In this study, hybrid nonlinear finite element models (FEM) were developed to examine the flexural performance and the ultimate load capacity of bonded and unbonded two-way reinforced concrete post-tensioned (PT) slabs that were pre-strengthened with external carbon-fiber reinforcement polymer (CFRP) laminates. Full 3D simulations, using ANSYS models, have been created for five different slab samples that were selected from a previously available experimental study. The model results were assessed to enable further numerical analysis. The result calibration included measurements of first crack loads, ultimate loads, deflections, strains in the extreme fiber of concrete, strains in CFRP laminates, and failure modes. The results proved a good correlation between FEM output and experimental ones. Based on this, the influencing parameters that affect plate stiffness, as well as the bending capacity of PT slabs, were examined by performing a detailed parametric study. The parameters included real-life load simulation, cable-to-CFRP strength contribution, and CFRP laminate location selection. The results demonstrated that strengthening using CFRP laminates have significantly increased the ductility index of both bonded and unbonded PT concrete slabs by 62.18% and 59.87%, respectively. In addition, strip strengthening locations near supports are much more effective than in the middle of slabs. Additionally, the CFRP strengthening contribution is very considerable in slabs with low PT ratios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The classroom space located in the attic of an old building is the subject of this study. The building was renovated and new spaces were created in the unused attic to expand classrooms. The original space under the sloping roof was not used because its internal headroom was not suitable. During the restoration, the entire original truss was raised gradually (in parts) by 1.2 m. This created a space with an entire area that can be used for classrooms. Continuous strips of vertical windows measuring 860/600 mm were installed in the space which enable a visual connection between the interior space and the exterior. At roof level, there are also two rows of skylights above each other which ensure enough daylight is present but create unpleasant overheating in the summer. The purpose of this study is to find a way to optimize the shading of transparent surfaces and the heat accumulation of building structures in order to achieve suitable interior conditions in the attic. This task was achieved by shading the windows in the attic. Shaded windows decrease illumination by 82% compared to unshaded ones. The percentage decrease in illumination is more significant than the decrease in the maximum temperature due to overheating. Additionally, the maximum temperature in the attic drops by only 31% if vertical and skylight windows are shaded with external blinds compared to unshaded windows. The minimum air temperature reached in the attic also drops by 26%. In order for users in the attic space to feel comfortable, it is necessary to use HVAC equipment in addition to the design of suitably built structures and window shading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The adoption of green building technology has become significant for ensuring sustainable development; it has become the main step to a sustainable future. The designs for green buildings include finding a balance between comfortable home construction and a sustainable environment. Moreover, the application of emerging technology is also used to supplement existing methods in the development of greener buildings to preserve a sustainable built environment. The main problem of this research is how to tackle the environmental parameters balance based on new techniques that are being used for green building optimization. To mitigate the cumulative effect of the constructed climate on human wellbeing and the regular ecosystem, the most popular goals for green buildings should be planned. This can be achieved by efficient use of natural resources such as energy, water, and other resources and minimizing waste. This will contribute to the security of occupant health, enhancement of work performance, emissions control, and improvement of the environment. In the construction of green buildings, several criteria that may contradict, interrelated indistinct and of qualitative and/or quantitative environment are broadened to utilize. This paper provides a detailed state of the art analysis on improving existing practices in green architecture/building using analytical hierarchy process (AHP) techniques to tackle the environmental balancing values based on optimal strategies and designs by green solutions to help make the best possible option from numerous options. The main goal of this paper is to evaluate the effect of color changes on the interior surfaces of a selected hall on the level of daylight, represented by the DF factor. A single-story hall was chosen as the reference building, in which daylight falls through the side windows and a skylight at roof level. Measurement of the level of daylight in the real state of the building (in situ) was carried out. The measurement took place when the external boundary conditions of the measurement were met (external state of the sky). A survey was conducted among users, in which they considered the visual perception of the environment and what colors would be suitable for the walls, ceiling, and floor in the working environment of the hall. The evaluation of the respondents who considered the color of the floor was interesting, and several agreed that the floor should be brown. After debugging the model for the simulation based on the actual state of the measurement, simulation calculations were performed with selected surface colors in the interior of the hall. Computational simulations were performed for changing calculation boundary conditions. Daylight Factors (DF) (%) were evaluated, namely minimum, maximum, and average DF values for 15 selected simulations. The calculations were performed in the RADIANCE simulation program. Simulations included the change in the surface color of the simulated wall and the current ceiling surface color, the color of the simulated ceiling surface and the current wall surface color, and the color of the simulated wall and ceiling at the same time. The floor color did not change during the evaluation; it was considered brown. Based on the evaluation of AHP, evaluations of the significance and comparability of colored areas were performed. The value of the average DF was chosen as the most important, the less significant minimum DF value was chosen, and the maximum DF value was considered in the last place. The results show that white, gray, green, or yellow walls, white ceiling, and brown floor were rated as the most suitable for the interior surfaces in the considered hall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies the Egyptian building design strategies for different building envelope shapes based on the green building design using the DesignBuilder program by simulating the outdoor climate conditions depending on the Egyptian meteorological data. The simulated results are applied to Minia City as one of the hotdesert climate regions in Egypt. The research is performed on the hottest day in summer according to the analysis of climatic data overall months using the climate consultant tool. This research studies two main variables to characterize the quantitative relationships between the building form and the Natural Ventilation (NV) of thermal comfort to be achieved, which are mixed-mode maximum wind speed, and natural ventilation setpoint temperature. The research focuses on two output parameters, which are air velocity and pressure, relating to natural outdoor ventilation. The simulation findings revealed that the circle form offers the best case, which has a significant role in achieving thermal comfort that optimized the value between the two major parameters in building design, while the worst case is the U-shaped building based on the same two optimized values. Finally, the usage of natural ventilation, simultaneously with choosing the suitable building geometry, is principal for adapting the current outdoor air velocity and pressure, thus reducing the energy consumption of buildings. Practical application: This paper studies the relationship between building form and natural ventilation to achieve outdoor thermal comfort and its effects on buildings. The study assesses the wind speed and temperature parameters using the DesignBuilder tool. The study suggests a combination between natural ventilation and choosing the suitable building form to adapt the air velocity and pressure to reduce the energy consumption of the buildings. In the climate change era, the tendency to utilize computer-aided strategies in architectural design enables the incorporation of the influences of ambient conditions into the design process. Such a design strategy can consequently contribute to creating nature-based, sustainable architectural, and urban solutions. In this paper, it will be shown that the built environment can be designed, already from the first concepts, to affect and consequentially improve the local wind microclimate by addressing the unfavorable wind effects and proposing solutions for transforming them into an advantage. Utilizing the iterative Research Through Design (RTD) approach, the proposed data-driven wind-oriented shape optimization is introduced in a case study located in Stockholm. Three complex architectural shapes, resulting from the wind-oriented design approach, are parametrically designed in Grasshopper for Rhino and subsequently analyzed in a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) plug-in Swift for Grasshopper. The paper provides information on the solution of project supported by the Scientific Grant Agency of VEGA of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of Slovak Republic and of the Slovak Academy of Sciences of Slovak Republic. There is project: VEGA 1/0674/18. This research project is programmed for the years 2018 to 2021. In this paper are presented information on the results obtained in 2019, solution of this project objectives and project solution. The results are presented in realized publications. We focused mainly on the presentation of major publications, articles in domestic and foreign journals, articles in conference proceedings with an emphasis on publications that are indexed in the WOS and SCOPUS databases. The linkage of individual design skills and computer-based capabilities in the design process offers yet unexplored environment-adaptive architectural solutions. The conventional perception of architecture is changing, creating a space for reconfigurable, "living" buildings responding, for instance, to climatic influences. Integrating the element of wind to the architectural morphogenesis process can lead toward wind-adaptive designs that in turn can enhance the wind microclimate in their vicinity. Geometric relations coupled with material properties enable to create a tensegrity-membrane structural element, bending in the wind. First, the properties of such elements are investigated by a hybrid method, that is, computer simulations are coupled with physical prototyping. Second, the system is applied to basic-geometry building envelopes and investigated using computational fluid dynamics simulations. Third, the findings are transmitted to a case study design of a streamlined building envelope. The results suggest that a wind-adaptive building envelope plays a great role in reducing the surface wind suction and enhancing the wind microclimate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper highlights the problems that are associated with daylight use in industrial facilities. In a case study of a multi-story textile factory, we report how to evaluate daylight (as part of integral light) in the production halls marked F and G. This study follows the article in the Buildings journal, where Hall E was evaluated (unilateral daylight). These two additional halls have large areas that are 54 x 54m and are more than five meters high. The daylight is only on the side through the attached windows in envelope structures in the vertical position on the hall. In this paper, we want to present two case studies of these two production halls in a textile factory in the eastern part of Slovakia. These are halls that are illuminated by daylight fromtwo sides through exterior peripheral walls that are against or next to each other. The results of the case studies can be applied in similar production halls illuminated by a "double-sided" (bilateral) daylight system. This means that they are illuminated by natural illumination through windows on two sides in a vertical position. Such a situation is typical for multi-storied industrial buildings. The proposed approximate calculation method for the daylight factor can be used to predict the daylight in similar spaces in other similar buildings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Different behavior of the construction materials in dynamic boundary conditions causes deformations of thermal field of the window structure detail in envelope structure. Numerical thermal field analysis verified by the experimental measurement in experimental outdoor chambers is used for recognize the real heat-air-moisture behavior in the various structures. Window sill of brick walls is one of the most critical places in a connection of two envelope types objectively. Architecture is mostly perceived as a static, unchanging and rigid element without an ability to react to the changing environment around it and the specific conditions of its location. The digital approach to architectural design has already shown that it is possible to create architectural prototypes that react to the external inputs by changes in their material properties or even in the shape. The conventional, stationary architecture is not able to react to the environmental factors, nor to the changing needs of building occupants, which brings architects, designers, and engineers to the issue of movement in architecture. This paper describes selected adaptive materials and structures used in architecture. An adaptive shape is designed and analyzed using a combination of 3D modeling tool Rhinoceros and the visual algorithmic plug-in Grasshopper, together with the extension for Grasshopper, Kangaroo.
