41. Properties of biodegradable foam composites made from coconut residue as a function of the reinforcing phase of cassava starch.

Abstract

The large amount of coconut residue produced by coconut producers and manufacturers has harmed the environment. Coconut waste was converted into coconut residue flour (CRF), which was used as a reinforcing material for biodegradable packaging development in order to decrease waste problems and increase the value of the circular economy. The effects of CRF content, ranging from 0 to 25 wt%, on the properties of foam-type composites made from cassava starch containing 10 wt% spent coffee grounds (SCG) were investigated. Flexural strength was raised to 2.53 MPa by adding CRF at 25 wt%. A thicker outer layer and denser foam structure were observed when the proportion of CRF in the samples was increased. The density of all samples was found to be 0.34-0.41 g/cm3, which was in the same range as other starch-based foam composites. The water resistance of the samples was marginally enhanced by adding more CRF. The water absorption index (WAI) and water solubility index (WSI) of the samples were in the ranges of 5.10-8.95% and 2.16-5.05%, respectively. The soil burial test at 30 days showed that the weight loss of the samples increased from 74.88 to 100% with increasing CRF due to the high susceptibility of CRF to microbial spoilage. Based on the findings of this study, CRF could be a promising and environmentally friendly reinforcing material for biodegradable foam composites that could be used to replace expanded polystyrene in dry food packaging. Abstract

Conventional drug delivery systems often cause side effects and gastric degradation. Novel drug delivery systems must be developed to decrease side effects and increase the efficacy of drug delivery. This research aimed to fabricate hydrogel beads for use as a drug delivery system based on basil seed mucilage (BSM), sodium alginate (SA), and magnetic particles (MPs). The Taguchi method and Grey relational analysis were used for the design and optimization of the hydrogel beads. Three factors, including BSM, SA, and MPs at four levels were designed by L-16 orthogonal arrays. BSM was the main factor influencing bead swelling, drug release rate at pH 7.4, and release of antioxidants at pH 1.2 and 7.4. In addition, SA and MPs mainly affected drug loading and drug release rate in acidic medium, respectively. Grey relational analysis indicated that the composition providing optimal overall properties was 0.2 vol% BSM, 0.8 vol% SA, and 2.25 vol% MPs. Based on the findings of this work, BSM/SA/MPs hydrogel beads have the potential to be used as a pH-sensitive alternative material for drug delivery in colon-specific systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Vitrimers have gained a great deal of attention from researchers, yet research on its application is still lacking. This study, a novel bio‐based vitrimer was developed from epoxy (EP) and bio‐based curing agents, that is, cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and citric acid (CA), and then reinforced by carbon fiber. The vitrimers with different ratios of acid to epoxy (R ratio) at 0.30–0.40 contained ester and ether linkages. All EP/CA/CNSL vitrimers showed the stress relaxation over 70–100°C due to transesterification. The vitrimers were applied as polymer matrices for the carbon fiber composites and then used as repair patches. By using the carbon fiber‐reinforced vitrimer with the R ratio of 0.30, patch repair on a damaged alloy sheet revealed that approximately 98% of the tensile strength of the damaged alloy sheet was recovered. The vitrimer can be dissolved from carbon fiber composite to recover carbon fiber. The recovered carbon fiber retained good tensile strength compared to the pristine composite. Based on this study, the EP/CA/CNSL vitrimers showed the comparable thermomechanical properties with the epoxy vitrimer cured by the petroleum‐based curing agent. Abstract

In this research, the effects of foam content on mechanical property, thermal property and sound absorption of cellular lightweight geopolymer concrete (CLGC) were studied. The geopolymer mixtures were made with 15 M NaOH solution, sodium silicate/NaOH ratio (NS/NaOH) of 1.00, sand/ash ratio of 1.25, liquid/fly ash ratio of 0.4. The foam contents were varied from 2-12 %wt. The 28-day compressive strength of CLGCs of 2.7-57.8 MPa, unit weight of 844-2100 kg/m³, water absorption of 1.36-31.25%, porosity of 2.82-49.42%, thermal conductivity of 0.13-1.62 W/mK, and sound absorption coefficients of 0.05-0.5 were obtained. The CLGCs with 4% foam content, 28-day compressive strength of 38.9 MPa and unit weight of 1815 kg/m³ is suitable for structural lightweight concrete complying to the requirements of ASTM C330/C330M-17a. Whereas the mix with 8 and 10 % foam contents with compressive strengths of 7.60 and 6.1 MPa, and unit weights of 1210 and 1060 kg/m³ are suitable for use as masonry lightweight concrete block in accordance with ASTM C331/C331M-17.
