Abstract The present study aimed to identify nutrients (UPLC-PDA-ESI-MS/MS, HPLC-RI method) and biological activities (antioxidant activity to reduce Fe3+ and ABTS·+, pancreatic lipase inhibitory effect, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase, anti-bacterial) of 14 highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) cultivars (Northern type) as well as a principal component analysis (PCA) to assess the variation of these properties in the context of biodiversity. Most of the cultivars in this research have been first presented in this paper. Phytochemical profiling of the tested highbush blueberry fruit revealed 75 bioactive compounds, including 5 macroelements, 7 microelements, 7 monophosphate nucleotides, 15 anthocyanins, 1 phenolic acid, 14 flavonols, 11 essential amino acids, 8 non-essential amino acids, 2 sugars, 7 organic acids. The PCA showed that the profile and contents of the analyzed compounds as well as their anti-bacterial, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity potentials depended significantly on the tested cultivars. Thus, the study provides comprehensive data on cultivar-specific biodiversity and correlations that can be used to design novel extracts rich in polyphenolic, amino acids, and/or minerals extracts from the selected cultivars of highbush blueberry as natural and alternative sources to fulfill the growing industry demand for supplements, pharmaceuticals, and nutraceutical products.

In a 56-day experiment, the effects of selenium-enriched yeast (SeY) on the growth, enzymatic activity of the gastrointestinal tract, oxidative stress parameters, and selected immunological parameters of sterlet, Acipenser ruthenus (L.), were analyzed. The concentration of selenomethionine (SeMet) from SeY in the feed was 0 mg kg−1 (C), 0.7 mg kg−1 feed (S1), 1.4 mg kg−1 feed (S2), and 2.1 mg kg−1 feed (S3). Statistically significant differences were found in the final fish body weight between the control and groups S1 and S3. A significant increase in lipase activity was found in the initial section of the small intestine of fish from group S3. The highest activity of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase was recorded in the liver of fish from group S2. Analyses of non-specific humoral response parameters showed an increase in ceruloplasmin activity in group S1. The lowest active dose of SeMet derived from yeast tested in this study that stimulated humoral immunity and fish growth was 0.7 mg kg−1 feed (S1).

Maya crosses have always inspired a sense of wonder in the modern observer, because they have been considered animate persons with whom people establish and maintain intersubjective relationships and whom they cherish and nurture. In this study, drawing on my ethnography of “dressing the cross”, an Easter ceremony, I suggest that what separates Maya traditionalism from globalizing modern Maya Spirituality is a particular form of “hierarchical animism”.

Abstract The goal of this study was to evaluate the intensity of autophagy and ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis processes occurring in myocardium of left ventricle (LV) in subsequent stages of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) to determine mechanisms responsible for LV mass loss in a monocrotaline-induced PAH rat model. LV myocardium samples collected from 32 Wistar rats were analyzed in an early PAH group (n = 8), controls time-paired (n = 8), an end-stage PAH group (n = 8), and their controls (n = 8). Samples were subjected to histological analyses with immunofluorescence staining, autophagy assessment by western blotting, and evaluation of ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis in the LV by immunoprecipitation of ubiquitinated proteins. Echocardiographic, hemodynamic, and heart morphometric parameters were assessed regularly throughout the experiment. Considerable morphological and hemodynamic remodeling of the LV was observed over the course of PAH. The end-stage PAH was associated with significantly impaired LV systolic function and a decrease in LV mass. The LC3B-II expression in the LV was significantly higher in the end-stage PAH group compared to the early PAH group (p = 0.040). The measured LC3B-II/LC3B-I ratios in the end-stage PAH group were significantly elevated compared to the controls (p = 0.039). Immunofluorescence staining showed a significant increase in the abundance of LC3 puncta in the end-stage PAH group compared to the matched controls. There were no statistically significant differences in the levels of expression of all ubiquitinated proteins when comparing both PAH groups and matched controls. Autophagy may be considered as the mechanism behind the LV mass loss at the end stage of PAH.

Japanese quince fruits (Chaenomeles L.) are a valuable source of bioactive compounds, including polyphenolic compounds, vitamins, macro- and microelements. By using Japanese quince fruit, you can fortify wheat beers and influence the qualitative and sensory values as well as the content of bioactive compounds in the finished product. Sensory evaluation showed that wheat beers with the addition of nonozonated Japanese quince fruits were characterized by a balanced taste and aroma (overall impression), but all wheat beers obtained were characterized by high sensory values, and the ozonation process had a positive effect on the microbiological stability of both fruits and beers with the addition of these fruit. Physico-chemical analysis of wheat beers showed that beers enriched with Japanese quince fruit were characterized by high total acidity, respectively: average values of 4.95 (fruit-free) and 6.66 (0.1 M NaOH/100 mL), higher energy value, and, especially beers enriched with ozonated Japanese quince fruit and high total polyphenol content. It was shown that wheat beers enriched with quince fruit contained mainly chlorogenic acid at an average level of 4.35 and 5.42 mg/L (for ozonated and nonozonated fruit, respectively). Electrical properties (impedance and capacity) allowed the differentiation of the analyzed wheat beers. Based on the conducted research, it appears that wheat beers enriched with Japanese quince fruit may constitute a new trend in the brewing industry.

Kwestia kultywowania i eksponowania dziedzictwa niematerialnego w przestrzeni miejskiej, obecnie silnie stechnicyzowanej, jest rzadko poruszana w literaturze. Zastanawiający jest szczególnie sposób prezentowania tradycji umożliwiający ich poznanie turystom, którzy często są istotnym czynnikiem zachęcającym depozytariuszy do kultywowania zwyczajów. Autorki zakładają, że w tym celu w przestrzeni turystycznej miast powinny pojawić się stosowne obiekty, które byłyby elementem nie tylko przestrzennego, lecz także semiotycznego zagospodarowania miasta. W artykule zagadnienie to rozważano, analizując przykłady snycerstwa w Konjicu i fado w Lizbonie. Dostrzeżono tendencję przenoszenia się zwyczajów do przestrzeni medialnej i wirtualnej przy jednoczesnym zaniku ich obecności w przestrzeni fizycznej, rekompensowanym powstawaniem atrakcji turystycznych. Fado ponadto rozbrzmiewa w przestrzeniach turystycznych poza Lizboną, co pozbawia je oryginalności kontekstu terytorialnego. Płaskorzeźbione produkty drewniane z Konjica przechodzą za to transformację, dostosowując się do gustów potencjalnych nabywców: tracą ornamentykę typową dla regionu, w którym wciąż są wytwarzane, lecz przekształcenia te są immanentnym elementem zauważalnym od początku rozwoju tej tradycji. Nowe wzornictwo staje się jedynie signum temporis, który zapewnia trwanie przestrzeni semiotycznej konjickiej kultury.

AimThe main purpose of the present study was to validate the Slovenian version of the 41- item Capacity to Love Inventory (CTL-I). Based on psychoanalytic theory, limitations to capacity to love are expected to be associated with personality dysfunction and disintegration as well as fundamental mental capacities such as self-reflection and self-awareness.MethodTo examine these assumptions, a sample of 552 Slovenian non-clinical individuals were recruited through academic networks. The construct validity of the CTL-I was assessed using a confirmatory factor analysis and convergent validity of the CTL-I and its subscales was established against IPO-16, PID-5 BF, MAAS.ResultsOur findings show that the Slovenian version of the CTL-I replicated the six-factor structure, exhibiting good model fit as well as satisfactory internal consistency of all subscales. In line with expectations, capacity to love was found to be inversely associated with dysfunctional personality traits and structural personality disturbances. Accordingly, higher dispositional mindfulness was coherently associated with all domains of CTL-I.ConclusionThe results add to the growing evidence for the cross-cultural validity and sound psychometric properties of CTL-I, presented here in the Slovenian version. Our findings also point to the significance of dispositional mindfulness both in relation to capacity to love as well as mental health.

Abstract Drosera intermedia grows in acidic bogs in parts of valleys that are flooded in winter, and that often dry out in summer. It is also described as the sundew of the most heavily hydrated habitats in peatlands, and it is often found in water and even underwater. This sundew is the only one that can tolerate long periods of submersion, and more importantly produces a typical submerged form that can live in such conditions for many years. Submerged habitats are occupied by D. intermedia relatively frequently. The aim of the study was to determine the environmental conditions and architecture of individuals in the submerged form of D. intermedia. The features of the morphological and anatomical structure and chlorophyll a fluorescence of this form that were measured were compared with analogous ones in individuals that occurred in emerged and peatland habitats. The submerged form occurred to a depth of 20 cm. Compared to the other forms, its habitat had the highest pH (4.71–4.92; Me = 4.71), the highest temperature and substrate hydration, and above all, the lowest photosynthetically active radiation (PAR; 20.4–59.4%). This form differed from the other forms in almost all of the features of the plant’s architecture. It is particularly noteworthy that it had the largest main axis height among all of the forms, which exceeded 18 cm. The number of living leaves in a rosette was notable (18.1 ± 8.1), while the number of dead leaves was very low (6.9 ± 3.8). Leukotrienes are proinflammatory mediators that participate in the process of atherogenesis and contribute to the development of symptomatic peripheral arterial disease. The aim was to evaluate the relationship between leukotriene E4 (LTE4) and B4 (LTB4) with parameters reflecting endothelial vascular function in patients with chronic lower limb ischemia. This prospective observational study enrolled 50 consecutive patients undergoing endovascular treatment due to chronic lower limb ischemia (Rutherford 3). 21. Impurity-enhanced core valence luminescence via Zn-doping in cesium magnesium chlorides

Scintillators with faster timing capabilities are currently in high demand for use in radiation detection systems in the fields of nuclear and medical physics. The limited number of suitable materials that meet the performance criteria of next generation detection systems presents an opportunity for discovery of new fast scintillator materials. In this work, the effects of doping several ultrafast core-valence luminescent (CVL) scintillators with divalent Zn is explored. Three compounds are investigated – CsMgCl3, Cs2MgCl4, and Cs3MgCl5 – and single crystals of each doped with 5 mol% Zn are grown via the Bridgman method. Additionally, mixing across the full range of concentrations (from 0 % to 100 % Zn) is explored in the Cs2Mg1-xZnxCl4 and Cs3Mg1-xZnxCl5 systems. For low concentrations of Zn, light yields of all three compounds are enhanced (by up to ∼60 %) compared to the pure crystals, achieving what we believe to be the brightest known CVL, CsMgCl3:Zn 5 % (3400 ± 170 ph/MeV light yield). More importantly, Zn doping does not affect the ultrafast timing properties, with each composition maintaining a single-component decay time around 1–3 ns. A sub-100 ps coincidence time resolution (CTR) is also achieved with CsMgCl3:Zn 5 %. The results of this work reveal a new avenue towards obtaining brighter CVL materials, which could open up possibilities for more advanced ultrafast scintillators to be discovered moving forward.

Background Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as diclofenac (DCF), form a significant group of environmental contaminants. When the toxic effects of DCF on plants are analyzed, authors often focus on photosynthesis, while mitochondrial respiration is usually overlooked. Therefore, an in vivo investigation of plant mitochondria functioning under DCF treatment is needed. In the present work, we decided to use the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a model organism. Methods Synchronous cultures of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain CC-1690 were treated with DCF at a concentration of 135.5 mg × L−1, corresponding to the toxicological value EC50/24. To assess the effects of short-term exposure to DCF on mitochondrial activity, oxygen consumption rate, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) production were analyzed. To inhibit cytochrome c oxidase or alternative oxidase activity, potassium cyanide (KCN) or salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) were used, respectively. Moreover, the cell’s structure organization was analyzed using confocal microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Results The results indicate that short-term exposure to DCF leads to an increase in oxygen consumption rate, accompanied by low MMP and reduced mtROS production by the cells in the treated populations as compared to control ones. These observations suggest an uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation due to the disruption of mitochondrial membranes, which is consistent with the malformations in mitochondrial structures observed in electron micrographs, such as elongation, irregular forms, and degraded cristae, potentially indicating mitochondrial swelling or hyper-fission. The assumption about non-specific DCF action is further supported by comparing mitochondrial parameters in DCF-treated cells to the same parameters in cells treated with selective respiratory inhibitors: no similarities were found between the experimental variants. Conclusions The results obtained in this work suggest that DCF strongly affects cells that experience mild metabolic or developmental disorders, not revealed under control conditions, while more vital cells are affected only slightly, as it was already indicated in literature. In the cells suffering from DCF treatment, the drug influence on mitochondria functioning in a non-specific way, destroying the structure of mitochondrial membranes. This primary effect probably led to the mitochondrial inner membrane permeability transition and the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation. It can be assumed that mitochondrial dysfunction is an important factor in DCF phytotoxicity. Because studies of the effects of NSAIDs on the functioning of plant mitochondria are relatively scarce, the present work is an important contribution to the elucidation of the mechanism of NSAID toxicity toward non-target plant organisms.

Graphene is one of the most extensively studied 2D materials, exhibiting extraordinary mechanical and electronic properties. Although many years have passed since its discovery, manipulating single graphene layers is still challenging using standard resist-based lithography techniques. Recently, it has been shown that it is possible to etch graphene directly in water-assisted processes using the so-called focused electron-beam-induced etching (FEBIE), with a spatial resolution of ten nanometers. Nanopatterning graphene with such a method in one single step and without using a physical mask or resist is a very appealing approach. Currently, we are once again experiencing a frenzy related to artificial intelligence. Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPT) models are highly effective at various natural language processing tasks. Different varieties of GPT models are widely used these days to improve productivity. Graphic departments generate art designs, developers engineer intricate software solutions, leveraging services predicated on the GPT framework, and many other industries are also following the lead and implementing these new sets of tools in their workflow. However, there are areas in natural language processing where a simple solution is often more suitable and effective than current Large Language Models. In this article, we decided to analyze and compare the practical use of one of the more popular GPT solutions, J-Large, and the simple rule-based model we implemented. We integrated these two models into the internal information system of a private company focused on communication with customers in the gaming industry. Both models were trained on the same dataset provided as a log of conversational interactions for the last two years in the given system. We observed that GPT models exhibited superior performance in terms of comprehensibility and adequacy. The rule-based models showed noticeable proficiency in handling domain-specific tasks, mainly when fed with datasets extracted from the historical communication between users and a specialized domain system, such as a customer care department. As a result, with a sufficiently tailored and specific dataset at their disposal, rule-based models can effectively outpace GPT models in performing domain-specific tasks.

Contemporary language models heavily rely on large corpora for their training. The larger the corpus, the better a model can capture various semantic relationships. The issue at hand appears to be the limited scope of the corpora used. One potential solution to this problem is the application of data augmentation techniques to expand the existing corpus. Data augmentation encompasses several techniques for corpus augmentation. In this article, we delve deeper into the analysis of three techniques: Synonym Replacement, Back Translation, and Reduction of Function Words. Utilizing these three techniques, we prepared diverse versions of the corpus employed for training Word2Vec Skip-gram models. These techniques were validated through extrinsic evaluation, wherein Word2Vec Skip-gram models were used to generate word vectors for classifying fake news articles. Performance measures of the generated classifiers were analyzed. The study highlights significant statistical differences in classifier outcomes between augmented and original corpora. Specifically, Back Translation significantly enhances accuracy, notably with Support Vector and Bernoulli Naive Bayes models. Conversely, the Reduction of Function Words (FWD) improves Logistic Regression, while the original corpus excels in Random Forest classification. The article also includes an intrinsic evaluation involving lexical semantic relations between word pairs. The intrinsic evaluation highlights nuanced differences in semantic relations across augmented corpora. Notably, the Back Translation (BT) corpus better aligns with established lexical resources, showcasing promising improvements in understanding specific semantic relationships.

27. Comparative Evaluation of the Phytochemical Composition of Fruits of Ten Haskap Berry (Lonicera caerulea var. kamtschatica Sevast.) Cultivars Grown in Poland

The aim of this study was to investigate the qualitative and quantitative fruit profiles of ten cultivars (cvs.) of haskap berry (Lonicera caerulea var. kamtschatica Sevast.) to determine their antioxidant activity (ABTS test, CUPRAC test, ability to capture superoxide (O2˙−) and hydroxyl radicals (OH˙)), cytotoxic activity (against cancer cell lines breast, MCF-7; colon, HT-29; and melanoma, SK-Mel-28) and physicochemical properties. Most of the selected cultivars had not previously been analyzed for these properties. A total of 19 polyphenolic compounds were identified in the fruits of the tested genotypes, with a quantitative range of 2166.3–3597.0 µg/g. The polyphenol profile was dominated by anthocyanins (90.0–92.4%), and the remaining classes occurred in the following order: phenolic acids > flavonols > flavan-3-ols. The highest concentrations of these polyphenol groups were found in the cultivars ‘Honeybee’, ‘Sinij Uties’ and ‘Usłada’. The fruits of these cultivars were also characterized by the highest antioxidant activity (546.6–683.5 µg/mL for O2˙− and 541.2–652.1 µg/mL for OH˙) and cytotoxic activity (103.6–649.2 µg/mL). The data obtained indicate that the fruits of the new haskap cultivars are a good source of bioactive compounds with possible health-promoting properties.

Oilseed plants are a valuable group of foods in human nutrition. Uncommon oilseed plants, such as safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), camelina (Camelina sativa L.), and black cumin (Nigella sativa L.), have been gaining increasing attention. The unique chemical compositions of these plants, which contribute to potential health benefits, underscore the importance of further exploration and study. The continuation of development of research in this field, resulting in the well-documented positive impact of these plants on human health, may lead to the possibility of them becoming new functional foods in the future. This review aims to present the potential health-promoting properties of the aforementioned uncommon oilseed plants based on recent literature reports and intends to inspire further exploration of their unique features. Among others, recent reports on the anticancer, antioxidant, and antibacterial potential, as well as the preventive potential in the case of metabolic diseases of these plants, were discussed. The importance of further development of these problems was also emphasized.

In food authentication, it is important to compare different analytical procedures and select the best method. The aim of this study was to determine the fingerprints of Zweigelt and Rondo wines through headspace analysis using ultra-fast gas chromatography (ultra-fast GC) and to compare the effectiveness of this approach at classifying wines based on grape variety and type of malolactic fermentation (MLF) as well as its greenness and practicality with three other chromatographic methods such as headspace solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with carboxen-polydimethylosiloxane fiber (SPME/GC-MS with CAR/PDMS fiber), headspace solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with polyacrylate fiber (SPME/GC-MS with PA fiber), and ultra performance liquid chromatography–photodiode array detector-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-PDA-MS/MS). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that fingerprints obtained using all four chromatographic methods were suitable for classification using machine learning (ML). Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) yielded accuracies of at least 99% in the varietal classification of Zweigelt and Rondo wines and therefore proved suitable for robust fingerprinting-based Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures. In the case of wine classification by the type of MLF, the classifiers performed slightly worse, with the poorest accuracy of 91% for SVM and SPME/GC-MS with CAR/PDMS fiber, and no less than 93% for the other methods. Ultra-fast GC is the greenest and UPLC-PDA-MS/MS is the most practical of the four chromatographic methods.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the functional properties of muffins fortified with white clover flowers (Trifolium repens L.), which were added to the dough in the following amounts: (i) 0% (control); (ii) 2.5%; (iii) 5.5%; (iv) 7.5%; and (v) 10%. The organoleptic properties were assessed by a panel of consumers. Additionally, the following parameters were also tested: basic chemical composition, total polyphenols, the antioxidant activity together with antiproliferative effects on the A375 melanoma cell line, starch nutritional fractions and the in vitro glycemic index. As a result, replacing wheat flour with white clover flour significantly affected the color, aroma and taste of the muffins. The content of proteins, fats, total ash, dietary fiber, resistant starch (RS), slowly digestible starch (SDS),total polyphenols and antioxidant activity increased statistically significantly with the elevated amount of white clover flour added to the dough. At the same time, the content of free glucose (FG), rapidly available glucose (RAG) and rapidly digestible starch (RDS), the value of the in vitro glycemic index and the viability of melanoma cancer cells decreased significantly. The muffins enriched with white clover flowers might constitute an interesting proposition and extension of the existing assortment of confectionery products.

The aim of the study was to design microcapsules with a core of blueberry fruit extracts (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) using the ionotropic gelation method and then assess the effect of the type of extracts used and the combination of polymers on the profile of phenolic compounds, their in vitro bioavailability, stability during storage, as well as their antioxidant characteristics and cytotoxic activity against colon cancer cells while assessing biocompatibility against normal colon epithelial cells. Encapsulation efficiency (EE), ranging from 8.79 to 74.55%, significantly depended on the extract used and the type of carrier. It was shown that the addition of pectin (Pect) and whey protein isolate (WPI) to alginate (Alg) improved the efficiency of the encapsulation process. For this version of microcapsules, the highest antioxidant activity, phenolic compound content and their stability during storage were also demonstrated. The estimated content of phenolic compounds ranged from 0.48 to 40.07 mg/g, and the dominant compound was cyanidin 3-O-glucoside. In turn, the highest bioavailability of these compounds and the highest cytotoxic activity against cancer cells were characterized by microcapsules with Alg and WPI. Nevertheless, good biocompatibility with normal colon epithelial cells was demonstrated for all versions of microcapsules. The obtained data indicate that the tested variants of microcapsules protect the bioactive compounds of blueberry fruit extracts, which translates into maintaining their health-promoting properties.

Considering the prevalence of diet-related diseases, new ways of preventing them are being sought. One of them is the addition of polyphenols to high-starch products to inhibit their digestibility and reduce their glycemic index. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the differences between polyphenols popular in food ((+)catechin, epigallocatechin gallate, quercetin, kaempferol, naringenin, hesperidin, trans-ferulic acid, and p-coumaric acid), in terms of their impact on wheat, rice, potato, and maize starch digestibility. Polyphenols were added to starch separately, before and after its pasting, in one of the following doses: 5, 10, and 20 mg. Starch was digested in the presence of single polyphenols to measure RDS (rapidly digestible starch), SDS (slowly digestible starch), RS (resistant starch), and TS (total starch) content. On that basis, the SDI (starch digestion index) was calculated, and the GI (glycemic index) was estimated. The results show that polyphenols inhibit starch digestion at different levels depending on the type of tested starch and the time of polyphenol addition. However, in terms of RDS, TS, and eGI (estimated glycemic index), the greatest impact was observed for epigallocatechin gallate in a dose of 20 mg most frequently, independently of the kind of tested starch and the time of polyphenol addition.

This study focuses on the endangered neo-endemic Baltic dunes species Linaria loeselii Schweigg. (Plantaginaceae), also known as Linaria odora (M. Bieb.). By utilizing in vitro cultures, we successfully germinated seeds collected in situ. Our method, which involved using media supplemented with 5 µmol/L 6-benzylaminopurine, led to the indirect regeneration of shoots after 60 days of culture in the dark, significantly increasing the number of progeny plants. Additionally, the medium supplemented with 2.85 μmol/L indole-3-acetic acid and 10.2 μmol/L paclobutrazol allowed rooting after 30 days of shoot fragments. This research provides a potential basis for developing Linaria loeselii introduction programs into the environment, thereby contributing to the conservation of this endangered species.

The main aim of this paper is to present results of an experimental test focused on the validity and effectiveness of composed methodology aimed at increasing the student's attention in Virtual Learning Environment. Areas of presented methodology which were subject of our research is students behavior during learning. The behavioral part of methodology is focused on calculating estimated time for reading/learning specific learning material based on mathematical model. The model has been created as linear regression model trained and validated with student's access logs from Moodle instance used at the university. The methodology created by us, which is the subject of the experiment, uses the mentioned mathematical model in order to more optimally calculate the time-on-task and thus assume the time required for the correct understanding of the presented curriculum in the form of e-learning. In this paper, we will focus on confirming the didactic effectiveness of our proposed methodology for monitoring student attention. We describe an experiment with which we verified the proposed methodology. Methodology itself is focused on improving students learning experiences while using e-learning platforms like Moodle.

IntroductionX-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is caused by an inactivating mutation in the phosphate-regulating endopeptidase X-linked (PHEX) gene whose defective product fails to control phosphatonin fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) serum levels. Although elevated FGF23 levels have been linked with detrimental cardiac effects, the cardiologic outcomes in XLH patients have been subject to debate. Our study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and severity of cardiovascular morbidity in pediatric XLH patients before, during, and after a 2-year treatment period with burosumab, a recombinant anti-FGF23 antibodyMethodsThis prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary medical center, and included 13 individuals with XLH (age range 0.6–16.2 years) who received burosumab every 2 weeks. Clinical assessment at treatment initiation and after .5, 1, and 2 years of uninterrupted treatment included anthropometric measurements and cardiologic evaluations (blood pressure [BP], electrocardiogram, conventional echocardiography, and myocardial strain imaging).ResultsThe linear growth of all patients improved significantly (mean height z-score: from -1.70 ± 0.80 to -0.96 ± 1.08, P=0.03). Other favorable effects were decline in overweight/obesity rates (from 46.2% to 23.1%) and decreased rates of elevated BP (systolic BP from 38.5% to 15.4%; diastolic BP from 38.5% to 23.1%). Electrocardiograms revealed no significant abnormality throughout the study period. Cardiac dimensions and myocardial strain parameters were within the normative range for age at baseline and remained unchanged during the study period.ConclusionCardiologic evaluations provided reassurance that 2 years of burosumab therapy did not cause cardiac morbidity. The beneficial effect of this treatment was a reduction in cardiovascular risk factors, as evidenced by the lower prevalence of both overweight/obesity and elevated BP.

Federated learning (FL) is a technique that allows multiple participants to collaboratively train a Deep Neural Network (DNN) without the need to centralize their data. Among other advantages, it comes with privacy-preserving properties, making it attractive for application in sensitive contexts, such as health care or the military. Although the data are not explicitly exchanged, the training procedure requires sharing information about participants’ models. This makes the individual models vulnerable to theft or unauthorized distribution by malicious actors. To address the issue of ownership rights protection in the context of machine learning (ML), DNN watermarking methods have been developed during the last five years. Most existing works have focused on watermarking in a centralized manner, but only a few methods have been designed for FL and its unique constraints. In this paper, we provide an overview of recent advancements in federated learning watermarking, shedding light on the new challenges and opportunities that arise in this field.

Abstract Background The interest expressed by the agriculture in the category of innovative biostimulants is due to the intensive search for novel preparations based on natural substances i.a. allelochemicals. Scientific research into the design and testing of next-generation biostimulants marks advances for sustainable agricultural production. Results Our research represents an innovative and comprehensive approach to the use of Linum usitatissimum L. seed extracts in soybean cultivation using foliar treatments. A multi-tiered approach was adopted, involving both the assessment of soybean responses at the agronomic, morphological and biochemical levels. It was hypothesized that the extract would improve the growth and yield of soybean through mechanisms based on improved physiological and biochemical processes. The study showed that the extract was rich in micro- and macro-nutrients (in particular potassium and zinc), amino acids (with the largest proportion of glutamic acid), fatty acids (predominant oleic + elaidic acids) and carbohydrates (sucrose and glucose). Soybean responded positively by increased in plant height, number of pods and seed yield. The results confirmed that the tested biostimulant is not only an environmentally friendly product, but also is capable of increasing the growth and productivity of soybeans, thus increasing farmers' profit. The obtained yield was characterized by a lower total proteins pool (average decrease approx. 2%). The extract caused changes in the amino acid profile (especially in the case of proline and lysine) and fatty acid composition (significantly higher content of acids: heptadecanoic, octadecanoic, eicosanoic, eicosapentaenoic, docosanoic, erucic, tricosanoic). Conclusions All the observations made confirm that the extract positively affected the soybean crop. Based on the study, it was concluded that solid–liquid extraction could be considered as a green alternative for prototyping a novel and ecological biostimulant. Graphical Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different package types (with addition of films made of biopolymers enriched with natural extracts of ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric) on antioxidative properties of conventional, organic, and wild-grown raspberry fruit during frozen storage for 1-, 4-, 8-, and 12-month periods. The content of total polyphenol and anthocyanins, as well as antioxidant activity, were studied. Additionally, structural (FT-IR and UV-Vis), mechanical (tensile strength and elongation), and surface wetting angle tests of used films were studied. In all crop types, polyphenol content increased at 8 and 12 months of frozen storage in packages with an addition of biopolymer films. There was a statistically significant increase in the amount of total polyphenols in the last month of storage in the package with films with added cinnamon extract. In contrast, packages with ginger-enriched films contributed to an increase in polyphenols only in organically grown and wild raspberry fruit at the 4th, 8th, and 12th month and 8th and 12th month, respectively. The addition of films with turmeric extract increased the polyphenol content in the 8th month of frozen storage of organically grown raspberry fruit and in the 12th month of wild-grown raspberry. During frozen storage of wild raspberry fruit, an increase in anthocyanin content was observed in all cases in the 12th month. This result was almost twice as high as in the control sample. The greatest rise in the content of anthocyanins occurred when packages with films with turmeric extract were applied. Tendencies presented by this paper are not clear-cut in cases of antioxidant activity of analysed raspberries. A common feature was that, in general, after 12 months of storage, raspberries from all crops had higher and statistically significant antioxidant values compared to the first month of storage. Studies on the biocomposite films have shown that the structure of chitosan and alginate polymers was partly decomposed after 12 months, and the natural extracts and raspberry crops used had different effects on the mechanical properties of the biocomposites films. Based on the results of research that has been carried out, it can be concluded that it has not been clearly proven whether the addition of polysaccharide films to packages contributes to the increase in bioactive compounds during frozen storage.

More than 40 species of lampreys (Petromyzontiformes) are known worldwide. Some of them are parasitic and feed on the blood of fish or other aquatic animals. Lampreys spawn once in their lifetime, after which they die. One of the representatives of the ichthyofauna of European rivers is the river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis. The river lamprey is now an endangered species due to loss and degradation of their habitats. The present study investigated gonadal development without hormonal stimulation in female river lampreys during puberty under controlled conditions for a period of seven months. Female river lampreys were kept in conditions that mimicked the natural environment. During the November–May period, samples were taken monthly to determine the extent of gonadal development and gastrointestinal and liver changes using histological examination. From the results obtained, the dynamical changes were determined for the following: gonadosomatic index (GSI; %), hepatosomatic index (his; %), and digestivesomatic index (DSI; %). With the gonadal development of female lampreys, an increase in GSI (7–23%; November–May) and a decrease in DSI (0.4–0.1%; November–May) histological changes were observed in the gonads (oocyte development), intestines (over time, decreased lipid vacuoles and enterocyte apoptosis), and in the liver (decreased lipid vacuoles and hepatocyte apoptosis over time) and in the digestive system resulting from its degradation. Also, it was observed that there was a change in the color of the liver to green in April. This study demonstrated the key role of the liver in the oocyte maturation process in this species.

This research studied the phenolic content compared with the antioxidant properties of various O. vulgare (Lamiaceae) cultivars grown in Poland. The research results in this paper indicate that the dominant ingredient in all oregano cultivars was rosmarinic acid, known for its strong antioxidant properties. The highest amounts of rosmarinic acid (87.16 ± 4.03 mg/g dm) were identified in the O. vulgare spp. hirtum (Link) Ietsw. Other metabolites identified in the studied extracts include luteolin O-di-glucuronide-O-di-pentoside (30.79 ± 0.38 mg/g dm in the ‘Aureum’ cultivar), 4′-O-glucopyranosyl-3′, 4′-dihydroxy benzyl-protocatechuate (19.84 ± 0.60 mg/g dm in the ‘Margerita’ cultivar), and p-coumaroyl-triacetyl-hexoside (25.44 ± 0.18 mg/g dm in the ‘Margerita’ cultivar). ‘Hot & spicy’ and ‘Margerita’ cultivars were characterized by the highest activity in eliminating OH• and O2•− radicals. Extracts from Greek oregano had the highest ability to scavenge DPPH radicals and chelate iron ions. This research has also provided new evidence that oregano has anti-migratory, cytotoxic properties and influences the viability of gastric cancer cells (the highest cytotoxicity was attributed to the ‘Hot & spicy’ cultivar, which performed the worst in antioxidant properties tests). Extracts from the tested cultivars at a concentration of 0.625% effectively inhibited the growth of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa bacteria. It seems that the oregano grown in Poland is of good quality and can be successfully grown on a large scale if the appropriate use is found.

45. Preparation of Supercapacitor Carbon Electrode Materials by Low-Temperature Carbonization of High-Nitrogen-Doped Raw Materials from Food Waste

To address the problem of the low nitrogen (N) content of carbon materials prepared through the direct carbonization of food waste, soybean meal and egg whites with high N contents were selected to carry out carbonization experiments on food waste. At 220 °C, the effects of hydrothermal carbonization and microwave carbonization on the properties of supercapacitor electrode materials were investigated. The results show that food waste doped with soybean meal and egg whites could achieve good N doping. At a current density of 1 A·g−1, the specific capacitance of the doped carbon prepared by hydrothermal doping is as high as 220.00 F·g−1, which is much greater than that of the raw material prepared through the hydrothermal carbonization of food waste alone, indicating that the hydrothermal carbonization reactions of soybean meal, egg white, and food waste promote the electrochemical properties of the prepared carbon materials well. However, when a variety of raw materials are mixed for pyrolysis carbonization, different raw materials cannot be fully mixed in the pyrolysis process, and under the etching action of potassium hydroxide, severe local etching and local nonetching occur, resulting in a severe increase in the pore size distribution and deterioration of the electrochemical performance of the prepared carbon materials. At a current density of 1 A·g−1, the specific capacitance of these prepared carbon materials is 157.70 F·g−1, whereas it is only 62.00 F·g−1 at a high current density of 20 A·g−1. Therefore, this study suggests that the hydrothermal carbonization process is superior to the microwave pyrolysis carbonization process for preparing supercapacitor electrode materials with multiple samples doped with each other.

46. Modification of Fungicide Treatment Needs and Antioxidant Content as a Result of Real-Time Ozonation of Raspberry Plants

Raspberry plants need intensive anti-fungal protection. A solution to this problem could be the application of an ozonation process. For this purpose, a technical solution was proposed and implemented in raspberry plant production. The proposal suggests replacing 25% of standard fungicide treatments with ozonation. It was demonstrated that the use of ozone under the proposed conditions made it possible to maintain stable parameters of chlorophyll content and fluorescence (no significant differences), but the intensity of gas exchange was increased. The greatest differences were observed in the second measurement period (T2), when the plants were in the stage of most active development. Additionally, the content and profile of low-molecular-weight antioxidants and the microbial load were determined in the collected fruits. In periods T2 and T3, the proposed method caused a reduction reaching ~2 log cfu g−1 in the microbial content of raspberry fruits. It was shown that ozone treatment intensified the biosynthesis of low-molecular-weight antioxidants in fruit (increasing the total polyphenol content by more than 20%). The proposed scheme allows a 25% reduction in standard fungicide treatments while maintaining the health of cultivated raspberry plants. The reduction in fungicide use aligns with the EU regulations and produces fruit with better quality.

47. Diclofenac Interacts with Photosynthetic Apparatus: Isolated Spinach Chloroplasts and Thylakoids as a Model System

Diclofenac, often detected in environmental samples, poses a potential hazard to the aquatic environment. The present study aimed to understand the effect of this drug on photosynthetic apparatus, which is a little-known aspect of its phytotoxicity. Chloroplasts and thylakoids isolated from spinach (Spinacia oleracea) were used for this study and treated with various concentrations of diclofenac (from 125 to 4000 μM). The parameters of chlorophyll a fluorescence (the OJIP test) as measurements for both the intact chloroplasts and the thylakoid membranes revealed that isolated thylakoids showed greater sensitivity to the drug than chloroplasts. The relatively high concentration of diclofenac that is required to inhibit chloroplast and thylakoid functions suggests a narcotic effect of that drug on photosynthetic membranes, rather than a specific interaction with a particular element of the electron transport chain. Using confocal microscopy, we confirmed the degradation of the chloroplast structure after DCF treatment, which has not been previously reported in the literature. In conclusion, it can be assumed that diclofenac’s action originated from a non-specific interaction with photosynthetic membranes, leading to the disruption in the function of the electron transport chain. This, in turn, decreases the efficiency of photosynthesis, transforming part of the PSII reaction centers into heat sinks and enhancing non-photochemical energy dissipation.

48. Fish of Low Commercial Value in Lakes of Different Trophic Status (Poland)

In a commercial fishery, some fish are classified as low-value, but their classification varies in different countries. The aim of this study was to determine the abundance, contribution, and dominance of low-value fish species, such as Abramis brama < 1000 g, Alburnus alburnus, Blicca bjoerkna, Gymnocephalus cernua, Perca fluviatilis < 100 g, Rutilus rutilus < 200 g, and Scardinius erythrophthalmus < 200 g, in 145 Polish lakes of different areas, depths, and trophic statuses situated in the northern and central parts of Poland in 2021. Perca fluviatilis and R. rutilus were the most frequent low-value species (100% and 99%, respectively). The contribution of all low-value fish to the total biomass of caught fish was relatively high, ranging from 37% in the mesotrophic lake to 100% in the eutrophic lake (mean of 77 ± 14%). Lakes in which the contribution of low-value species exceeded 90% were relatively numerous (24 lakes, 17% of the studied lakes). Among a total of about 437.5 thousand low-value fish, 261 thousand specimens (60%) had a body weight of below 10 g. All low-value fish species, except for P. fluviatilis and S. erythrophthalmus, were related to the studied environmental variables. The relative biomass of these species increased with increasing lake productivity, while it decreased with the increasing maximum and mean depth of the studied lakes. The high contribution of low-value fish to the total biomass in many lakes indicates the need for the constant monitoring of the abundance and structure of fish communities and the use of appropriate actions (biomanipulation and stocking with piscivorous fish species) to improve the ecological condition of lakes.

Species in the genus Utricularia are carnivorous plants that prey on invertebrates using traps of leaf origin. The traps are equipped with numerous different glandular trichomes. Trichomes (quadrifids) produce digestive enzymes and absorb the products of prey digestion. The main aim of this study was to determine whether arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) occur in the cell wall ingrowths in the quadrifid cells. Antibodies (JIM8, JIM13, JIM14, MAC207, and JIM4) that act against various groups of AGPs were used. AGP localization was determined using immunohistochemistry techniques and immunogold labeling. AGPs localized with the JIM13, JIM8, and JIM14 epitopes occurred in wall ingrowths of the pedestal cell, which may be related to the fact that AGPs regulate the formation of wall ingrowths but also, due to the patterning of the cell wall structure, affect symplastic transport. The presence of AGPs in the cell wall of terminal cells may be related to the presence of wall ingrowths, but processes also involve vesicle trafficking and membrane recycling, in which these proteins participate.
