Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of the regulation of histamine synthesis in enterochromaffin-like cells, chemically and structurally, by treatment with omeprazole and pirenzepine.Methods: The ultrastructures of enterochromaffin-like cells and parietal cells were examined in rats treated with oral omeprazole (20 mg/kg) or intraperitoneal pirenzepine (1 mg/kg) administration. Serum gastrin concentrations, mRNA levels of H+-K+-ATPase and histidine decarboxylase, and the fundic concentrations of somatostatin and histamine were determined.Results: Pirenzepine treatment suppressed omeprazole-induced increases in serum gastrin levels and mRNA levels of H+-K+-ATPase and histidine decarboxylase. Pirenzepine also decreased omeprazole-induced increases of histamine concentration in fundic mucosa. Pirenzepine elevated somatostatin mRNA level, previously decreased by omeprazole treatment, in fundic mucosa. In the cytoplasm of enterochromaffin-like cells, omeprazole markedly reduced the numbers of vesicles and granules, but significantly increased their diameters, whereas pirenzepine treatment changed neither of these features. The densities and diameters of both vesicles and granules produced by treatment with omeprazole and pirenzepine were between those produced by treatment with omeprazole alone and pirenzepine alone.Conclusions: Omeprazole-induced hypergastrinemia and pirenzepine-induced somatostatin synthesis play important roles not only in histamine synthesis but also in ultrastructural changes in enterochromaffin-like cells. Biliary phospholipid secretion is mediated by a multidrug resistance gene product, and its molecular subselection occurs at the site of secretion to modulates bile metastability. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of modifying hepatic phospholipid synthesis on canalicular phospholipid transporter expression and membrane fluidity. Bile-duct cannulation was performed in male Sprague-Dawley rats pretreated with or without intravenous infusion of dimethylethanolamine, an intermediate phospholipid metabolite along the pathway of phosphatidylcholine synthesis of phosphatidylethanolamine N-methylation (0.01 mg/min/100 g body wt) for 15 hr, followed by sodium taurocholate infusion (50 nmol/min/100 g body wt) with or without sulfobromophthalein (50 nmol/min/100 g body wt). Dimethylethanolamine enhanced biliary phospholipid secretion in association with a decrease in biliary phospholipid hydrophobicity. Dimethylethanolamine also increased canalicular membrane fluidity defined by 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene fluorescence depolarization, whereas the expression of multidrug resistance gene product and multidrug resistance associated protein was unchanged. In contrast, a disproportionate reduction of biliary phospholipid secretion caused by sulfobromophthalein (uncoupling) was enhanced by under the treatment with dimethylethanolamine. In conclusion, the increase in biliary phospholipid secretion and canalicular membrane fluidity without a drastic change of its canalicular transporter by dimethylethanolamine suggests that such a canalicular membrane fluidity facilitates the transporter activity and/or phospholipid molecular movement from the canalicular outer membrane into the bile. A more drastic reduction in phospholipid secretion under sulfobromophthalein-caused uncoupling indicates the possibility of a preferential distribution of relatively hydrophilic phosphatidylcholine molecules to bile salt micelles since sulfobromophthalein is known to reduce the micellar capacity to extract membrane lipids for biliary secretion. Although several recent studies have reported that curing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) may result in the development of reflux esophagitis (RE), the mechanisms leading to this complication are unknown. One by product of H. pylori infection is ammonia, which serves as an acid neutralizer. The aim of this study was to clarify whether ammonia, which is produced during H. pylori infection, has a protective effect on the esophagus. Eight-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were fasted for 24 hrs. Under anesthesia, both the pylorus and limiting ridge were simultaneously ligated. One hour postligation, 0.3 ml of saline or ammonia at various concentrations was administered intragastrically by gastric intubation. Three hours after ligation, the animals were killed, the esophagus and stomach were removed, and the length of esophageal hemorrhagic erosions was measured. The incidence of RE was 100% (7/7) in the control group, 71% (5/7) in the low-ammonia group, 29% (2/7) in the middle-ammonia group, and 14% (1/7) in the high-ammonia group. The severity of lesions decreased in correspondence to increases in ammonia concentration. The development of RE was significantly inhibited by ammonia in a dose-dependent manner. This study indicates that ammonia protects against development of RE. A decreased amount of ammonia in the stomach might be related to the development of RE after H. pylori eradication therapy. B-cell monoclonality has been reported not only in gastric lymphoma, but also in 1.3–21% of Helicobacter pylori-associated chronic gastritis ( Hp-CG) cases. The aim of this study was to determine the significance of B-cell monoclonality in Hp-CG. We examined 134 gastric biopsy specimens from 99 patients with Hp-CG. The density of Hp, polymorphonuclear neutrophil activity, chronic inflammation, glandular atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia (IM) were scored according to the updated Sydney System. B-cell monoclonality was analyzed for immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement using polymerase chain reaction amplification. B-cell monoclonality was detected in 6% of informative samples. B-cell monoclonality was found in 18% of the samples from Hp-CG patients with marked glandular atrophy but in none of the samples from Hp-CG patients with none to moderate glandular atrophy. Monoclonality was also detected in 20% of the samples from Hp-CG patients with marked IM, in 11% of the samples from Hp-CG patients with moderate IM, and in none of the samples from Hp-CG patients without IM. Therefore, B-cell monoclonality was significantly more frequent in Hp-CG patients with marked glandular atrophy than in Hp-CG patients with none to moderate atrophy. It was also more significantly frequent in Hp-CG patients with moderate or marked IM than in Hp-CG patients without IM ( P<0.05). Of 35 Hp-CG patients, 26 (74%) had identical B-cell populations in the antrum and the corpus, and all were polyclonal. The remaining nine (26%) Hp-CG patients had B-cell populations that differed in the antrum and the corpus. Four of the nine (44%) showed monoclonal B-cell populations in at least one gastric biopsy specimen. There were no patients with monoclonal B-cell populations in both the antrum and the corpus. These data suggest that glandular atrophy and IM in gastric biopsy specimens may be markers for gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomagenesis and that multiple gastric biopsy specimens from both the antrum and the corpus may be needed to assess the risk of gastric MALT lymphoma. The gallbladder role in cholesterol gallstone pathogenesis occurs through modulation of bile cholesterol metastability. The present study characterized the effects of concentrating bile on cholesterol crystallization through vesicle transformation, crystal habits, and potentiation of effector substances. Supersaturated model biles with total lipid concentrations of 12, 9, 6, and 3 g/dl were prepared with identical molar ratios (taurocholate-egg yolk phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol: 71:18:11). Bile metastability was assessed spectrophotometrically, and morphology of vesicle and crystal was sequentially scanned by video-enhanced differential contrast microscopy. The effects of replacing 30% of egg yolk phosphatidylcholine with soy bean phosphatidylcholine, 30% of taurocholate with taurodeoxycholate or tauroursodeoxycholate, and addition of concanavalin A-binding glycoprotein on each model bile were examined. By lowering total lipid concentration, cholesterol crystallization was retarded with less fusion and aggregation of vesicles. The effects of substances promoting cholesterol crystallization were enhanced with lesser bile. By replacing 30% of taurocholate with tauroursodeoxycholate, cholesterol crystallization was markedly inhibited in all concentrations, forming stable liquid-crystals. Impaired water absorption by the gallbladder may stabilize vesicles and inhibit rapid cholesterol crystallization, but the potential of cholesterol crystallization effector substances must be modified to alter bile cholesterol metastability. Study Objectives: Previous studies have reported that magnesium (Mg) deficiency is associated with coronary spasm. However, little is known about the preventive effect of Mg on coronary spasm. The present study investigated whether Mg prevents coronary spasm in patients with vasospastic angina (VSA).Design: Effectiveness trial.Setting: University medical center.Patients: Twenty-two patients with VSA.Intervention: Coronary spasm was induced with an intracoronary infusion of acetylcholine (Ach). After spontaneous relief of the coronary spasm, Mg sulfate (0.27 mmol/kg body weight) was infused IV over 20 min in 14 patients and isotonic glucose was infused in 8 patients as control subjects. Intracoronary infusion of Ach was then repeated, and the diameter of the coronary arteries was measured quantitatively.Measurements and Results: Mg infusion caused coronary artery dilatation at baseline in both the spastic (5. 9 +/- 2.3%) and nonspastic segments (5.5 +/- 1.5%). Mg infusion reduced the severity of chest pain and ST-segment deviations during coronary spasm. After the Mg infusion, the percent change in the diameter of the spastic segments improved from - 62.8 +/- 2.6% to - 43.7 +/- 4.7% during coronary spasm. Overall, 10 of 14 patients (71%) responded favorably to Mg infusion. Isotonic glucose infusion did not elicit changes in chest pain severity, ST-segment deviations, or the diameter of the coronary arteries during spasm.Conclusions: Mg infusion produces nonsite-specific basal coronary dilatation and suppresses Ach-induced coronary spasm in patients with VSA. We recently demonstrated that several organic anions cause dissociation of biliary lipid secretion from that of bile acids; namely, the "uncoupling phenomenon," in association with changes in the phospholipid molecular species in the canalicular membrane lipid bilayer. Because of the uncoupling phenomenon, transcytotic vesicles are retained inside cells, resulting in the accumulation of substances normally excreted in the bile. In the present study, bilirubin ditaurate (BDT; synthetic bilirubin) was used to investigate the effect of bilirubin overload on biliary lipid secretion and the lipid composition of hepatic subcellular fractions, as well as canalicular membrane packing density and fluidity. Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent cannulation of the bile duct and femoral vein. Sodium taurocholate was infused intravenously at 100 nmol/min per 100 g body weight. Then BDT (50 nmol/min per 100 g body weight) was infused concomitantly, followed by periodic bile collection for analysis of lipids. Bile acid secretion was not significantly affected by the infusion of BDT. In contrast, the secretion of cholesterol and phospholipids was decreased by 56.7% and 49.2%, respectively, compared with control. The phosphatidylcholine hydrophobicity of canalicular membrane vesicles, estimated by the molar ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids (S/U ratio) was decreased, but not significantly by BDT infusion. With BDT infusions, the biliary cholesterol/phospholipid (C/P) ratio was increased by 19%; canalicular membrane vesicle fluidity was decreased by 5.8%, whereas P-glycoprotein expression was unchanged. As P-glycoprotein expression was not altered, our findings suggested that the reduced canalicular membrane vesicle fluidity was a crucial regulator of canalicular membrane transporter function. We examined the role of capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons in pH-dependent gastrin secretion in the rat stomach. The change in serum gastrin levels relative to changes in luminal pH (using omeprazole for luminal alkalization or 0.1 N HCl for luminal acidification) was studied after oral administration of 4% lidocaine or capsaicin-induced ablation of afferent neurons. The increase of serum gastrin levels by luminal alkalization was significantly inhibited (50%) after administration of 4% lidocaine. Capsaicin pretreatment (125 mg/kg subcutaneously over two days) inhibited the change in serum gastrin levels both the luminal alkalization (38%) and acidification (66%). Antral gastrin contents, somatostatin contents, gastrin mRNA expression, and somatostatin mRNA expression were not significantly affected by capsaicin pretreatment. Our results indicate that capsaicin-sensitive afferent neurons participate in the secretion of gastrin by luminal alkalization and inhibition of gastrin by luminal acidification. The normal loading of joints during daily activities causes the articular cartilage to be exposed to high levels of intermittent hydrostatic pressure. This study quantified effects of intermittent hydrostatic pressure on expression of mRNA for important extracellular matrix constituents. Normal adult bovine articular chondrocytes were isolated and tested in primary culture, either as high-density monolayers or formed aggregates. Loaded cells were exposed to 10 MPa of intermittent hydrostatic pressure at a frequency of 1 Hz for periods of 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 hrs. Other cells were intermittently loaded for a period of 4 hrs per day for 4 days. Semiquantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays were used to assess mRNA signal levels for collagen types II and I and aggrecan. The results showed that type II collagen mRNA signal levels exhibited a biphasic pattern, with an initial increase of approximately five-fold at 4 and 8 hrs that subsequently decreased by 24 hrs. In contrast, aggrecan mRNA signal increased progressively up to three-fold throughout the loading period. Changing the loading profile to 4 hrs per day for 4 days increased the mRNA signal levels for type II collagen nine-fold and for aggrecan twenty-fold when compared to unloaded cultures. Background: Helicobacter pylori has been established as a risk factor for gastric carcinoma (GCa). Since before the discovery of H. pylori, atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia have been linked to GCa, especially the intestinal-type tumor. The prevalence of H. pylori infection and atrophic gastritis increase with age. Thus, analysis of H. pylori infection in young patients with GCa could help clarify the role of this bacterium in the development of GCa. Accordingly, we investigated the relationship between H. pylori infection, GCa, and histologic gastritis in patients less than 30 years old. Methods: Fifty GCa patients less than 30 years (mean, 26.4 years) and 100 sex- and age-matched controls (mean, 26.8 years) were examined for the presence of H. pylori infection and histologic gastritis. Results: The prevalence of H. pylori infection was significantly higher in GCa patients than in controls (94% versus 40%, P < 0.01). Its prevalence was not associated with tumor location, tumor stage, or histologic type. Gastritis, atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia significantly increased the risk of GCa. By means of multiple logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio for the risk of GCa in H. pylori-positive subjects was found to be 23.5 (95% confidence interval, 6.84-80.7). Conclusions: We confirmed a strong association between H. pylori infection and GCa in young patients. Telomerase, the ribonucleoprotein enzyme that elongates telomeres, is repressed in normal human somatic cells but is reactivated during tumour progression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the localization of human telomerase RNA (hTR) expression in human oesophageal dysplasia and cancer by using in situ mRNA hybridization (ISH) with avidin-biotin staining. Ki-67 immunoreactivity was also examined. We analysed 51 squamous cell carcinomas, 9 dysplasias and 60 normal mucosae. The integrity of the mRNA in each sample was verified by using a poly d(T)20 probe. Seventy-six samples (63%) showed no mRNA degradation; these included 30 carcinomas, 7 dysplasias and 39 normal mucosae. At the single-cell level, high levels of hTR expression were found in the cytoplasm and especially in the nucleus. Most (>90%) cancer cells demonstrated high levels of hTR expression in 29 (97%) of the 30 tumours. Most dysplastic cells also showed high levels of hTR in all 7 dysplastic cases. In all 39 normal mucosae, most basal cells indicated high levels of hTR expression, which were also seen in infiltrating lymphocytes. The distribution of hTR-expressing cells was similar to that of Ki-67-positive cells. These data suggest that overexpression of hTR may be correlated with the proliferative activity that defined by Ki-67 immunoreactivity and is an early event in carcinogenesis of the oesophagus. Background: Adenosine triphosphate stress thallium-201 single-photon emission computed tomography (ATP SPECT) is useful for diagnosis of coronary artery disease, but its usefulness for evaluating the severity of coronary artery stenosis has not been established.Methods and Results: We performed region-of-interest analysis of short-axis images obtained by ATP SPECT in 31 patients with single-vessel disease (>50% stenosis of the luminal diameter). We selected the lowest and highest washout rates (WR) among the anterior, lateral, and inferior WRs and calculated the ratio of the lowest WR to the highest WR (WR ratio = 0.925+/-0.027 in 14 control subjects). ATP SPECT showed positive results in 29 (94%) of 31 patients. The severity of coronary artery stenosis was inversely correlated with the WR ratio (r = -0.703, P < .0001). The sensitivity and specificity of a WR ratio < or = 0.660 for the diagnosis of severe coronary stenosis (> or =80% stenosis) were 83% and 80%, respectively.Conclusions: Results suggest that ATP SPECT may be useful for assessment of the severity of coronary artery stenosis in patients with single-vessel disease. Cholestasis, which affects phospholipid trafficking, therefore would be expected to alter canalicular membrane phospholipid composition and fluidity, as well as fatty acid composition of membrane phospholipid. These alterations may affect transcytotic vesicle fusion and would be expected to cause variety of cholestatic phenomena. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cholestasis on transcytotic vesicle fusion. Sprague-Dawley rats with extrahepatic and intrahepatic cholestasis were prepared by bile duct ligation (6 hr or three days) and phalloidin infusion (0.4 mg/kg body weight), respectively. Liposomes of phosphatidylserine/phosphatidylcholine were labeled with octadecyl rhodamine B chloride. Fusion of liposomes to canalicular membrane vesicle preparations from cholestatic and control rats was induced by the addition of calcium. The degree of fusion was evaluated by measuring the increase in rhodamine fluorescence. Membrane phospholipid content also was analyzed. Rates of liposomal fusion to membranes from cholestatic rats were decreased compared to controls. The saturated/unsaturated and saturated/polyunsaturated fatty acid ratios were increased in membrane phosphatidylcholine and decreased in membrane sphingomyelin from cholestatic rats. Cholesterol/phospholipid ratios were increased. Thus, in the presence of cholestasis, a redistribution of phospholipid species within canalicular membranes is associated with decreased transcytotic vesicle fusion. Cholestasis likely decreases membrane fluidity. The regulation of phospholipid species within hepatocellular membranes may play an important role in intrahepatic lipid transport. Bile salts regulate the subselection of phosphatidylcholine species secreted into bile and thereby modulate bile metastability. The aim of this study was to determine whether bile salts alter phosphatidylcholine species of the canalicular membrane, and if they do, to clarify whether the cytoprotective action of hydrophilic bile salts is associated with modulation of phosphatidylcholine composition in cell membrane bilayers. Bile salt-pool-depleted rats were infused intravenously with sodium taurocholate at a constant rate (200 nmol/min/100 g body wt) for 2 hr, followed by infusion of either sodium tauroursodeoxycholate, sodium tauroalphamuricholate, or sodium taurobetamuricholate (200 nmol/min/100 g) for 2 hr. Biliary outputs of cholesterol and phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylcholine hydrophobicity in bile and subcellular fractions were determined. The cytoprotective action of hydrophilic bile salts was determined by the release of canalicular membrane-localizing enzymes (alkaline phosphatase, leucine aminopeptidase) into bile. Tauroursodeoxycholate, taurobetamuricholate, and tauroalphamuricholate decreased the release of these enzymes when compared to values under taurocholate infusion. Bile phosphatidylcholine hydrophobicity was also decreased by the bile salts, whereas the cholesterol/phosphatidylcholine ratio was increased. In contrast, phosphatidylcholine hydrophobicity in the canalicular membrane was increased by these three bile salts. In conclusion, hydrophilic bile salts promote biliary secretion of relatively hydrophilic phosphatidylcholine secretion into bile, and consequently phosphatidylcholine hydrophobicity in canalicular membranes increased. Such an alteration in phosphatidylcholine species within canalicular membrane enhances its lateral packing density with less fluidity, and this may account, in part, for the cytoprotective action of hydrophilic bile salts against hydrophobic bile salts. Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has been identified as a physiologic abnormality, but no test has been established as a diagnostic standard for gastrointestinal dyskinesia in IBS patients. The aim of this study was to investigate gastrointestinal motility in patients with IBS by using radiopaque markers. Methods: Gastrointestinal motility was studied in IBS patients (n = 72), constipation patients (n = 19), diarrhoea patients (n = 9), and healthy controls (n = 23). Using three types of radiopaque markers, analysis was performed to establish the transit time and a new indicator, the `scattering index'. Results: Transit times were not characteristic in IBS. The patients with IBS had significantly higher scattering indexes in the colon and total gut than the healthy controls and the patients with constipation and diarrhoea. The transit time and scattering index of the colon were linearly correlated in the healthy controls and the constipation and diarrhoea patients but were not correlated in the IBS patients. Using transit time and scattering index was a reliable means of evaluating gastrointestinal motility in IBS patients, with a sensitivity of 65% and a specificity of 96%. The growth and spread of tumour cells depends on adequate vasculature. We have previously reported that the expression of interleukin-8 (IL-8) directly correlates with the vascularity of human gastric carcinomas. To provide evidence for a causal role of IL-8 in angiogenesis and tumorigenicity of human gastric cancer, we used the lipofectin method to stably transfect the human TMK-1 gastric carcinoma cells (low endogenous IL-8) with an IL-8 expression vector or control vector. Transfection with IL-8 did not affect the proliferation of cultured cells, yet the culture supernatants of the transfected (but not control) cells stimulated proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells. The IL-8-transfected and control cells were injected into the gastric wall of nude mice. IL-8-transfected cells produced rapidly growing, highly vascular neoplasms as compared to control cells. These results provide direct evidence for the role of IL-8 in the angiogenesis and tumorigenicity of human gastric carcinomas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A clinicopathological analysis of the risk factors for lymph node metastasis was performed in 177 patients with submucosal invasive colorectal carcinoma (CRC). The submucosal deepest invasive portion was histologically subclassified as well (W), moderately (M), or poorly (Por) differentiated. M type was further subdivided into moderately-well (Mw) and moderately-poorly (Mp) differentiated. The pattern of tumor growth was classified as polypoid growth (PG) and non-polypoid growth (NPG). Lymph node metastasis was detected in 21 (12%) of the 177 patients. Macroscopically, type IIc and IIa + IIc lesions showed a significantly higher incidence of lymph node metastasis (44% and 30%) than type IIa and I (4% and 8%). Regarding the histologic subclassification, Por and Mp lesions showed a significantly higher incidence of lymph node metastasis (67% and 37%) than W and Mw lesions (4% and 14%). NPG tumors showed a significantly higher incidence of lymph node metastasis (29%) than PG tumors (7%). The depth of submucosal invasion and lymphatic invasion (ly) were also significantly correlated with the incidence of lymph node metastasis (submucosal scanty (sm-s) invasion 4%, massive invasion 20%; ly(+) 23%, ly(-) 5%). None of the lesions with both sm-s invasion and of W or Mw type showed lymph node metastasis. These results indicate that submucosal invasive CRC with both sm-s invasion and of W or Mw type, which shows no ly, is the appropriate indication for endoscopic curative treatment. To establish a sensitive and efficient screening method for gastric cancer using serum pepsinogen, we investigated the characteristics of serum pepsinogen I and II levels and the I/II ratio and their cut-off points. We found that the pepsinogen I level and the I/II ratio were significantly lower in patients with gastric cancer than in control subjects, especially in patients with cancers of the differentiated type, the elevated type, and the depressed type without ulceration. However, sex, depth of invasion, and location of tumor did not correlate with the pepsinogen levels. A suitable cut-off point in screening for gastric cancer was a pepsinogen I level of less than 50 ng/ml and a I/II ratio of less than 3.0, as determined by receiver operator characteristics curves. The sensitivity, the specificity, and the accuracy of detection for all types of gastric cancer were approximately 55%, 75%, and 72%, respectively. If restricted to cancers of the elevated and the depressed type without ulceration, the sensitivity was approximately 85%, and the specificity and accuracy were approximately 76% and 77%, respectively. These results suggest that, in screening for gastric cancer when using pepsinogen levels and morphological examinations, the suitable cut-off point in regard to specificity is as stated above. The concanavalin A-bound glycoproteins in human gallbladder bile have recently been demonstrated to be strong promoters of cholesterol crystal nucleation. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism(s) whereby such promoters affect cholesterol crystal nucleation and/or growth, and compared these mechanisms with those of another promoter, calcium ion. Concanavalin A-bound glycoproteins were isolated from the Helix pomatia-unbound fraction of gallbladder bile from stone-free patients, and determined by electrohoresis to consist of six subclasses (MW 143, 98, 80, 58, 50, and 40 kDa). A cholesterol crystal growth assay showed that concanavalin A-bound glycoproteins both accelerated nucleation time and increased growth rate, whereas calcium ion affected nucleation time only. In the presence of both concanavalin A-bound glycoproteins and calcium ion, both cholesterol nucleation and growth were markedly enhanced. A gel permeation chromatographic study revealed that concanavalin A-bound glycoproteins shifted a considerable amount of cholesterol from micelles to vesicles, whereas calcium ion did not. These results suggest that concanavalin A-bound glycoproteins promote cholesterol crystal nucleation and growth, partly by shifting cholesterol from stable micelles to metastable nonmicellar fractions in bile. In contrast, calcium ion promotes these processes by other mechanisms and, therefore, enhances the effect of concanavalin A-bound glycoproteins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
