Abstract Due to the sulfur’s atoms’ propensity to form molecules and/or polymeric chains of various sizes and configuration, elemental sulfur possesses more allotropes and polymorphs than any other element at ambient conditions. This variability of the starting building blocks is partially responsible for its rich and fascinating phase diagram, with pressure and temperature changing the states of sulfur from insulating molecular rings and chains to semiconducting low- and high-density amorphous configurations to incommensurate superconducting metallic atomic phase. Here, using a fast compression technique, we demonstrate that the rapid pressurisation of liquid sulfur can effectively break the molecular ring structure, forming a glassy polymeric state of pure-chain molecules (Am-S P ). This solid disordered chain state appears to be (meta)stable in the P-T region usually associated with phase I made up of S8. The elemental sulfur glass, made up from one of the simplest building blocks, offers a unique prospect to study the structure and property relationships of various other phases of sulfur and their interactions. More importantly, the fast compression technique performed at any temperature effectively like thermal quenching, opening up possibilities in high pressure synthesis by providing an effective and fast way of changing the fundamental thermodynamical parameter.

Objectives To simulate the complex nonlinear interactions between the free surface and instantaneous wetted hull surface during ship navigation, an automatic mesh generation method is proposed.MethodsThe method takes a whole-hull triangular mesh file as the input and automatically generates meshes for the instantaneously transforming free surface and wetted hull surface. It is able to handle arbitrary hullforms with complex bow and stern geometries while exhibiting strong robustness. Simulations of waves generated by a KCS hull at various speeds are then conducted using the proposed method. ResultsThe predicted ship-side wave profiles, wave patterns around the hull, and wave-making resistance show good agreement with the experimental results. Moreover, at higher speeds, the simulated wave surface at the KCS stern consistently stays below the transom, exhibiting a dry transom characteristic. ConclusionsThe results demonstrate that the proposed method can accurately model nonlinear ship waves and has the potential to simulate the flow fields around transom-stern ships.

Abstract Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) have permanent devastating motor and sensory disabilities. Secondary SCI is known for its complex progression and presents with sophisticated aberrant inflammation, vascular changes, and secondary cellular dysfunction, which aggravate the primary damage. Since their initial discovery, the potent neuroprotective effects and powerful delivery abilities of exosomes (Exos) have been reported in different research fields, including SCI. In this study, we summarize therapeutic advances related to the application of Exos in preclinical animal studies. Subsequently, we discuss the mechanisms of action of Exos derived from diverse cell types, including neurogenesis, angiogenesis, blood–spinal cord barrier preservation, anti-apoptosis, and anti-inflammatory potential. We also evaluate the relationship between the Exo delivery cargo and signaling pathways. Finally, we discuss the challenges and advantages of using Exos to offer innovative insights regarding the development of efficient clinical strategies for SCI.

The transition period is a crucial stage in the reproductive cycle for dams and is linked closely with postpartum recovery, reproduction performance, and health. The confronting problem in the yak industry is that transition yaks under a conventional grazing feeding regime endure nutritional deficiency since this period is in late winter and early spring of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with the lack of grass on natural pasture. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of perinatal nutritional supplementation and early weaning on serum biochemistry, reproductive performance, and metabolomics in transition yaks. Eighteen healthy yaks in late pregnancy (233.9 ± 18.3 kg, 2–4 parity) were randomly assigned to three groups: conventional grazing feeding (GF, n = 6), additional nutrition supplementation (SF, n = 6), and additional nutrition supplementation with early weaning (SW, n = 6). Yaks in the GF, SF, and SW groups were free grazing on the same pasture in the daytime from −30 to 90 d relative to parturition. Yaks in SF and SW groups received total mixed ration supplementation in the barn during the night throughout the trial. Calves in the SW group were early weaned and separated from the dam at 60 d postpartum. Maternal body weight was measured at −30 and 90 d, and serum samples were collected to analyze serum biochemistry, hormones, and metabolomics at −15, 30, and 90 d relative to calving. In the SF and SW groups, yaks showed significantly higher body weight gain, serum glucose, globulin, and total protein concentrations. Lipid transportation molecules apolipoprotein B100 and very low-density lipoprotein of SF and SW yaks were significantly increased along with the decreased lipid mobilization products non-esterified fatty acid and β-hydroxybutyric acid when compared to GF yaks at −15 and 30 d. At 90 d, serum non-esterified fatty acid and β-hydroxybutyric acid levels were significantly lower in SW yaks than in SF ones, while apolipoprotein B100 and very low-density lipoprotein levels were significantly higher in SW yaks than in GF yaks. The serum levels of metabolic regulatory hormones, including insulin, leptin, and insulin-like growth factor I were significantly increased, and glucagon was significantly reduced in the SF and SW groups than in the GF group at −15 and 30 d. Among serum reproductive hormones, SF and SW yaks had significantly higher estradiol and progesterone concentrations than GF ones at −15 and 30 d. Follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormone levels were increased in SW group than in SF and GF ones at 90 d. The calving rates in the following year were 0% (GF), 16.7% (SF), and 83.3% (SW), respectively. The serum metabolomics analysis revealed 848 metabolites in positive mode and 350 in negative mode. With the perinatal nutritional supplementation, the lipid and energy metabolism of transition yaks were improved, meanwhile, lipid mobilization and estrogen production-related pathways were down-regulated. These data suggest that perinatal nutrition supplementation reduces body weight loss, improves glucose and lipid metabolic adaptation to the transition period, and improves yaks’ reproductive performance. Additionally, the combination of early weaning and nutritional supplementation results in lower lipid mobilization and up-regulation of lipid transportation and reproductive hormone secretion, which may further contribute to postpartum recovery and acceleration of the reproductive cycle.

Raccoon dog was proposed as a potential host of SARS-CoV-2, but no evidence support such a notion. In our study, we investigated the binding affinities of raccoon dog ACE2 (rdACE2) to the spike (S) protein receptor binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2 prototype (PT) and its variants. It revealed that the binding affinities of RBD from SARS-CoV-2 variants were generally lower than that of the PT RBD. Through structural and functional analyses, we found amino acids H34 and M82 play pivotal roles in maintaining the binding affinity of ACE2 to different SARS-CoV-2 sub-variants. These results suggest that raccoon dogs exhibit lower susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 compared to those animal species with a high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

Abstract Protein therapeutics are essential in treating various diseases, but their inherent biological instability and short circulatory half-lives in vivo pose challenges. Herein, a quantitative one-pot iterative living polymerization technique is reported towards precision control over the molecular structure and monomer sequence of protein-polymer conjugates, aiming to maximize physicochemical properties and biological functions of proteins. Using this quantitative one-pot iterative living polymerization technique, we successfully develop a series of sequence-controlled protein-multiblock polymer conjugates, enhancing their biostability, pharmacokinetics, cellular uptake, and in vivo biodistribution. All-atom molecular dynamics simulations are performed to disclose the definite sequence-function relationship of the bioconjugates, further demonstrating their sequence-encoded cellular uptake behavior and in vivo biodistribution in mice. Overall, this work provides a robust approach for creating precision protein-polymer conjugates with defined sequences and advanced functions as a promising candidate in disease treatment.

The recycling of graphite from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is overlooked due to its relatively low added value and the lack of efficient recovering methods. To reuse the spent graphite anodes, we need to eliminate their useless components (mainly the degraded solid electrolyte interphase, SEI) and reconstruct their damaged structure. Herein, a facile and efficient strategy is proposed to recycle the spent graphite on the basis of the careful investigation of the composition of the cycled graphite anodes and the rational design of the regeneration processes. The regenerated graphite, which is revitalized by calcination treatment and acid leaching, delivers superb rate performance and a high specific capacity of 370 mAh g−1 (∼99% of its theoretical capacity) after 100 cycles at 0.1 C, superior to the commercial graphite anodes. The improved electrochemical performance could be attributed to unchoked Li+ transport channels and enhanced charge transfer reaction due to the effective destruction of the degraded SEI and the full recovery of the damaged structure of the spent graphite. This work clarifies that the electrochemical performance of the regenerated graphite could be deteriorated by even a trace amount of the residual “impurity” and provides a facile method for the efficient regeneration of graphite anodes.

It is well known that atoms of the same element in different valence states show very different chemical behaviors. Calcium is a typical divalent metal, sharing or losing both of its valence electrons when forming compounds. Attempts have been made to synthesize compounds of monovalent calcium ions for decades, but with very little success (e.g., in clusters). Pressure can result in substantial changes in the properties of atoms and chemical bonding, creating an extensive variety of unique materials with special valence states. In this study, using the ab initio evolutionary algorithm USPEX, we search for stable calcium–chlorine (Ca–Cl) system compounds at pressures up to 100 GPa. Besides the expected compound CaCl2, we predict three new compounds with monovalent Ca to be stable at high pressures, namely, CaCl, Ca5Cl6, and Ca3Cl4. According to our calculations, CaCl is stable at pressures above 18 GPa and is predicted to undergo a transition from nonmagnetic Fm-3m-CaCl to ferromagnetic Pm-3m-CaCl at 40 GPa. Ca5Cl6 and Ca3Cl4 are stable at pressures above 37 and 73 GPa, with space groups P-1 and R-3, respectively. Following these predictions, we successfully synthesized Pm-3m-CaCl in laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments. The emergence of the unusual valence state at high pressures reveals exciting opportunities for creating entirely new materials in sufficiently large quantities for a variety of potential applications.

To study combustion and extinction characteristics of flames perturbed by acoustic waves, the evolution of the shape of the pool fire, mass loss rate (ma′) of fuel, and mechanisms of extinction of the flames under acoustic perturbations were studied. Moreover, based on parameters of combustion characteristics of flames, parametric models of ma′ and flame extinction were developed. The research results demonstrate that the shapes of unperturbed flames change during combustion, however, when perturbed by acoustic waves, the flame shapes become irregular and the flame fronts become disorderly. Compared with the combustion of unperturbed flames, ma′ is increased under acoustic perturbation. There are upper and lower limits for the change of ma′, so the models of upper and lower limits of ma′ in the concentrated area were established. Low–frequency acoustic waves tend to extinguish the pool fire, and the increased distance of acoustic response and acoustic source power can promote flame extinction. A linear relationship between flame extinction and acoustic frequency was semi-quantitatively characterized by a modified Damköhler (Da*) number. Based on the critical oscillation–induced displacement for extinguishing a pool fire, local acoustic parameters were characterized, and a critical model for local displacement during the extinction of the pool fire was established.

Abstract Background The 2022–2023 mpox (monkeypox) outbreak has spread rapidly across multiple countries in the non-endemic region, mainly among men who have sex with men (MSM). In this study, we aimed to evaluate mpox’s importation risk, border screening effectiveness and the risk of local outbreak in Chinese mainland. Methods We estimated the risk of mpox importation in Chinese mainland from April 14 to September 11, 2022 using the number of reported mpox cases during this multi-country outbreak from Global.health and the international air-travel data from Official Aviation Guide. We constructed a probabilistic model to simulate the effectiveness of a border screening scenario during the mpox outbreak and a hypothetical scenario with less stringent quarantine requirement. And we further evaluated the mpox outbreak potential given that undetected mpox infections were introduced into men who have sex with men, considering different transmissibility, population immunity and population activity. Results We found that the reduced international air-travel volume and stringent border entry policy decreased about 94% and 69% mpox importations respectively. Under the quarantine policy, 15–19% of imported infections would remain undetected. Once a case of mpox is introduced into active MSM population with almost no population immunity, the risk of triggering local transmission is estimated at 42%, and would rise to > 95% with over six cases. Conclusions Our study demonstrates that the reduced international air-travel volume and stringent border entry policy during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced mpox importations prominently. However, the risk could be substantially higher with the recovery of air-travel volume to pre-pandemic level. Mpox could emerge as a public health threat for Chinese mainland given its large MSM community. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Geothermal power generation employing Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology is a widely acknowledged and conventional approach for harnessing geothermal energy. In an innovative advancement, we propose a novel design integrating downhole thermoelectric power generation with a coaxial borehole heat exchanger. This design aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of geothermal energy utilization. In this innovative design, the geothermal well is divided into two distinct sections: a power generation section and a heat exchanging section, achieved through the implementation of a packer positioned from the uppermost part of the targeted zone. The process involves the injection of cold fluid downhole via an insulated pipe. Subsequently, a portion of the injected fluid is directed to flow in reverse within the casing-tubing annulus above the packer, while another portion circulates into the casing-tubing annulus below the packer before ascending through the tubing. This dual flow mechanism establishes distinct cold and hot sources for the thermoelectric generator, a key feature facilitated by this innovative design. Analytical models detailing of downhole temperature distribution for thermoelectric power have been meticulously developed. A comprehensive case study, focusing on a geothermal well with 3000 m length of power generation section and 500 m heat exchanging section, has been conducted. The results indicate that a significant generating capacity could be achieved with a higher wellhead temperature, and the payback period under different carbon tax scenarios is about 6–8 year. Furthermore, the effects of injection rate, fluid diversion ratio, and casing-tubing configuration on power performance and thermal-electricity efficiency are also discussed. This method not only enables the concurrent harvesting of geothermal energy and power generation but also operates consistently throughout the year. The results thus emphasize the viability and economic feasibility of the proposed approach.

Battery health assessments are essential for roadside energy storage systems that facilitate electric transportation. This paper uses the samples from the charging and discharging data of the base station and the power station under different working conditions at different working hours and at different temperatures to demonstrate the decay of the battery health of a roadside energy storage system under different cycles. In this paper, for the first time, the predicted state-of-health values are obtained by extracting the characteristic quantities affecting the battery health based on three indicators: the internal resistance, the rate of change of voltage, and the change of temperature. Data on state of health are clustered by K-Means, GMM, K-Means++ and divided into high, medium, and low levels. Using a comparison of the three methods, GMM clustering appears to be the best at reflecting the charging and discharging capacity of the battery.

Abstract Introduction Variability in household secondary attack rates and transmission risks factors of SARS-CoV-2 remain poorly understood. Methods We conducted a household transmission study of SARS-CoV-2 in Costa Rica, with SARS-CoV-2 index cases selected from a larger prospective cohort study and their household contacts were enrolled. A total of 719 household contacts of 304 household index cases were enrolled from November 21, 2020, through July 31, 2021. Blood specimens were collected from contacts within 30–60 days of index case diagnosis; and serum was tested for presence of spike and nucleocapsid SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies. Evidence of SARS-CoV-2 prior infections among household contacts was defined based on the presence of both spike and nucleocapsid antibodies. We fitted a chain binomial model to the serologic data, to account for exogenous community infection risk and potential multi-generational transmissions within the household. Results Overall seroprevalence was 53% (95% confidence interval (CI) 48–58%) among household contacts. The estimated household secondary attack rate is 34% (95% CI 5–75%). Mask wearing by the index case is associated with the household transmission risk reduction by 67% (adjusted odds ratio = 0.33 with 95% CI: 0.09–0.75) and not sharing bedroom with the index case is associated with the risk reduction of household transmission by 78% (adjusted odds ratio = 0.22 with 95% CI 0.10–0.41). The estimated distribution of household secondary attack rates is highly heterogeneous across index cases, with 30% of index cases being the source for 80% of secondary cases. Conclusions Modeling analysis suggests that behavioral factors are important drivers of the observed SARS-CoV-2 transmission heterogeneity within the household.

In the fixed time-step electromagnetic transient (EMT)-type program, an interpolation process is applied to deal with switching events. The interpolation method frequently reduces the algorithm’s accuracy when dealing with power electronics. In this study, we use the Butcher tableau to analyze the defects of linear interpolation. Then, based on the theories of Runge–Kutta integration, we propose two three-stage diagonally implicit Runge–Kutta (3S-DIRK) algorithms combined with the trapezoidal rule (TR) and backward Euler (BE), respectively, with TR-3S-DIRK and BE2-3S-DIRK for the interpolation and synchronization processes. The proposed numerical integral interpolation scheme has second-order accuracy and does not produce spurious oscillations due to the size change in the time step. The proposed method is compared with the critical damping adjustment method (CDA) and the trapezoidal method, showing that it does not produce spurious numerical oscillations or first-order errors.

The combustion process is complex and harsh, and the supersonic combustion flow field is also characterized by short duration and supersonic speed, which makes the real-time diagnostic technology for the transient environment extremely demanding. It is of great significance to realize high time-resolved accurate measurement of temperature, component concentration, and other parametric information of the combustion field to study the transient chemical reaction dynamics of the combustion field. Femtosecond CARS spectroscopy can effectively avoid the collision effect between particles in the measurement process and reduce the influence of the non-resonant background to improve the measurement accuracy and realize the time-resolved measurement on a millisecond scale. This paper introduces the development history of femtosecond CARS spectroscopy, points out its advantages and disadvantages, and looks forward to the future development trend to carry out high time-resolved measurements, establish a database of temperature changes in various complex combustion fields, and provide support for the study of engine mechanisms.

ABSTRACT The potential host range of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been expanding alongside its evolution during the pandemic, with rabbits and hares being considered important potential hosts, supported by a report of rabbit sero-prevalence in nature. We measured the binding affinities of rabbit and hare angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) with receptor-binding domains (RBDs) from SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and its variants and found that rabbit and hare ACE2s had broad variant tropism, with significantly enhanced affinities to Omicron BA.4/5 and its subsequent-emerged sub-variants (>10 fold). The structures of rabbit ACE2 complexed with either SARS-CoV-2 prototype (PT) or Omicron BA.4/5 spike (S) proteins were determined, thereby unveiling the importance of rabbit ACE2 Q34 in RBD-interaction and elucidating the molecular basis of the enhanced binding with Omicron BA.4/5 RBD. These results address the highly enhanced risk of rabbits infecting SARS-CoV-2 Omicron sub-variants and the importance of constant surveillance.IMPORTANCEThe severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has swept the globe and caused immense health and economic damage. SARS-CoV-2 has demonstrated a broad host range, indicating a high risk of interspecies transmission and adaptive mutation. Therefore, constant monitoring for potential hosts is of immense importance. In this study, we found that Omicron BA.4/5 and subsequent-emerged sub-variants exhibited enhanced binding to both rabbit and hare angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), and we elucidated the structural mechanism of their recognition. From the structure, we found that Q34, a unique residue of rabbit ACE2 compared to other ACE2 orthologs, plays an important role in ACE2 recognition. These results address the probability of rabbits/hares being potential hosts of SARS-CoV-2 and broaden our knowledge regarding the molecular mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 interspecies transmission.

Purpose The RESPIRA cohort aims to describe the nature, magnitude, time course and efficacy of the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination, population prevalence, and household transmission of COVID-19.Participants From November 2020, we selected age-stratified random samples of COVID-19 cases from Costa Rica confirmed by PCR. For each case, two population-based controls, matched on age, sex and census tract were recruited, supplemented with hospitalised cases and household contacts. Participants were interviewed and blood and saliva collected for antibodies and PCR tests. Participants will be followed for 2 years to assess antibody response and infection incidence.Findings to date Recruitment included 3860 individuals: 1150 COVID-19 cases, 1999 population controls and 719 household contacts from 304 index cases. The age and regional distribution of cases was as planned, including four age strata, 30% rural and 70% urban. The control cohort had similar sex, age and regional distribution as the cases according to the study design. Among the 1999 controls recruited, 6.8% reported at enrolment having had COVID-19 and an additional 12.5% had antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Compliance with visits and specimens has been close to 70% during the first 18 months of follow-up. During the study, national vaccination was implemented and nearly 90% of our cohort participants were vaccinated during follow-up.Future plans RESPIRA will enable multiple analyses, including population prevalence of infection, clinical, behavioural, immunological and genetic risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 acquisition and severity, and determinants of household transmission. We are conducting retrospective and prospective assessment of antibody levels, their determinants and their protective efficacy after infection and vaccination, the impact of long-COVID and a series of ancillary studies. Follow-up continues with bimonthly saliva collection for PCR testing and biannual blood collection for immune response analyses. Follow-up will be completed in early 2024.Trial registration number NCT04537338.

Emergence of the Omicron BA.1/2 SARS-CoV-2 subvariants led to a wave of infection South Africa. Here, the authors use serological data from a prospective household study to characterise infection rates in the context of diverse immune histories following vaccination and exposure to different variants.

An outbreak of COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2 sublineage occurred in Shanghai, China from February 26 to June 30, 2022. We use official reported data retrieved from Shanghai municipal Health Commissions to estimate the incidence of infections, severe/critical infections, and deaths to assess the disease burden. By adjusting for right censoring and RT-PCR sensitivity, we provide estimates of clinical severity, including the infection fatality ratio, symptomatic case fatality ratio, and risk of developing severe/critical disease upon infection. The overall infection rate, severe/critical infection rate, and mortality rate were 2.74 (95% CI: 2.73-2.74) per 100 individuals, 6.34 (95% CI: 6.02-6.66) per 100,000 individuals and 2.42 (95% CI: 2.23-2.62) per 100,000 individuals, respectively. The severe/critical infection rate and mortality rate increased with age, noted in individuals aged 80 years or older. The overall fatality ratio and risk of developing severe/critical disease upon infection were 0.09% (95% CI: 0.09-0.10%) and 0.27% (95% CI: 0.24-0.29%), respectively. Having received at least one vaccine dose led to a 10-fold reduction in the risk of death for infected individuals aged 80 years or older. Under the repeated population-based screenings and strict intervention policies implemented in Shanghai, our results found a lower disease burden and mortality of the outbreak compared to other settings and countries, showing the impact of the successful outbreak containment in Shanghai. The estimated low clinical severity of this Omicron BA.2 epidemic in Shanghai highlight the key contribution of vaccination and availability of hospital beds to reduce the risk of death.

Summary: Background: The true incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Costa Rica was likely much higher than officially reported, because infection is often associated with mild symptoms and testing was limited by official guidelines and socio-economic factors. Methods: Using serology to define natural infection, we developed a statistical model to estimate the true cumulative incidence of SARS-CoV-2 in Costa Rica early in the pandemic. We estimated seroprevalence from 2223 blood samples collected from November 2020 to October 2021 from 1976 population-based controls from the RESPIRA study. Samples were tested for antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid and the receptor-binding-domain of the spike proteins. Using a generalized linear model, we estimated the ratio of true infections to officially reported cases. Applying these ratios to officially reported totals by age, sex, and geographic area, we estimated the true number of infections in the study area, where 70% of Costa Ricans reside. We adjusted the seroprevalence estimates for antibody decay over time, estimated from 1562 blood samples from 996 PCR-confirmed COVID-19 cases. Findings: The estimated total proportion infected (ETPI) was 4.0 times higher than the officially reported total proportion infected (OTPI). By December 16th, 2021, the ETPI was 47% [42–52] while the OTPI was 12%. In children and adolescents, the ETPI was 11.0 times higher than the OTPI. Interpretation: Our findings suggest that nearly half the population had been infected by the end of 2021. By the end of 2022, it is likely that a large majority of the population had been infected. Abstract Background The SARS-CoV-2 containment strategy has been successful in mainland China prior to the emergence of Omicron. However, in the era of highly transmissible variants, whether it is possible for China to sustain a local containment policy and under what conditions China could transition away from it are of paramount importance at the current stage of the pandemic. Methods We developed a spatially structured, fully stochastic, individual-based SARS-CoV-2 transmission model to evaluate the feasibility of sustaining SARS-CoV-2 local containment in mainland China considering the Omicron variants, China’s current immunization level, and nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). We also built a statistical model to estimate the overall disease burden under various hypothetical mitigation scenarios. Results We found that due to high transmissibility, neither Omicron BA.1 nor BA.2 could be contained by China’s pre-Omicron NPI strategies which were successful prior to the emergence of the Omicron variants. However, increased intervention intensity, such as enhanced population mobility restrictions and multi-round mass testing, could lead to containment success. We estimated that an acute Omicron epidemic wave in mainland China would result in significant number of deaths if China were to reopen under current vaccine coverage with no antiviral uptake, while increasing vaccination coverage and antiviral uptake could substantially reduce the disease burden. Conclusions As China’s current vaccination has yet to reach high coverage in older populations, NPIs remain essential tools to maintain low levels of infection while building up protective population immunity, ensuring a smooth transition out of the pandemic phase while minimizing the overall disease burden.

Lead (Pb) contamination of planting soils is increasingly serious, leading to harmful effects on soil microflora and food safety. Exopolysaccharides (EPSs) are carbohydrate polymers produced and secreted by microorganisms, which are efficient biosorbent materials and has been widely used in wastewater treatment to remove heavy metals. However, the effects and underlying mechanism of EPS-producing marine bacteria on soil metal immobilization, plant growth and health remain unclear. The potential of Pseudoalteromonas agarivorans Hao 2018, a high EPS-producing marine bacterium, to produce EPS in soil filtrate, immobilize Pb, and inhibit its uptake by pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) was studied in this work. The effects of strain Hao 2018 on the biomass, quality, and rhizospheric soil bacterial community of pakchoi in Pb-contaminated soil were further investigated. The results showed that Hao 2018 reduced the Pb concentration in soil filtrate (16%–75%), and its EPS production increased in the presence of Pb2+. When compared to the control, Hao 2018 remarkably enhanced pakchoi biomass (10.3%–14.3%), decreased Pb content in edible tissues (14.5%–39.2%) and roots (41.3%–41.9%), and reduced the available Pb content (34.8%–38.1%) in the Pb-contaminated soil. Inoculation with Hao 2018 raised the pH of the soil, the activity of several enzymes (alkaline phosphatase, urease, and dehydrogenase), the nitrogen content (NH4+-N and NO3−-N), and the pakchoi quality (Vc and soluble protein content), while also raising the relative abundance of bacteria that promote plant growth and immobilize metals, such as Streptomyces and Sphingomonas. In conclusion, Hao 2018 reduced the available Pb in soil and pakchoi Pb absorption by increasing the pH and activity of multiple enzymes and regulating microbiome composition in rhizospheric soil.

The electrochemical additive manufacturing technique based on the meniscus-confined approach has been proved to be a powerful tool for fabricating nanoscale and microscale metal components. The stability of the meniscus is the key in this meniscus-confined approach to achieve high resolution and reliable product quality. In the present study, a double-nozzles design, which consists of a feed nozzle and a suction nozzle, is proposed for the meniscus confined electrochemical additive manufacturing technique. It was demonstrated that the proposed design possessed robust control of the stability of the meniscus by manipulating the feed and suction rates of the two nozzles in a quite large range. Various sizes of menisci can be easily obtained by utilising nozzles with different sizes. Compared with the pressure-controlled single-nozzle approach, the results showed that dense structures without dendrites can be fabricated by the double-nozzles design with larger current density due to the feed-and-suction process at the tip of the nozzles. The proposed flow-rate-controlled double-nozzles design was finally employed to fabricate some copper circuits and a Cu/CuNi thin film thermocouple to demonstrate its potential in fabricating electronic devices.

The Sr1-xLaxTi1-xCrxO3 (x = 0–0.05) nanofibers were synthesized by electrospinning based on Pechini sol-gel method. The prepared Sr1-xLaxTi1-xCrxO3 nanofibers were analyzed by XRD, Raman, UV–vis spectra, XPS, SEM, TEM, transient photocurrent, electrochemical impedance and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution tests. The results showed that CrLa co-doped can expand the light absorption region of SrTiO3 from the ultraviolet region to the visible light, and significantly narrowed its band gap. Under visible light irradiation, Sr1-xLaxTi1-xCrxO3 nanofibers exhibited the best hydrogen evolution activity at x = 0.03, and the hydrogen evolution rate reached 106.2 μmol∙g−1∙h−1. This may be the result of the combined effect of the intermediate band gap and the band gap variation due to Cr doping.

Abstract Composite gel polymer electrolyte (CGPE), derived from ceramic fillers has emerged as one of the most promising candidates to improve the safety and cycling stability of lithium metal batteries. However, the poor interface compatibility between the ceramic phase and polymer phase in CGPE severely deteriorates lithium‐ion pathways and cell performances. In this work, a fluorescent ceramic nanowire network that can palliate the energy barrier of photoinitiators and contribute to preferential nucleation and growth of polymer monomers is developed, thus inducing polymer segment orderly arrangement and tightly combination. A proof‐of‐concept study lies on fabrications of poly(ethylene oxide) closely coating on the ceramic nanowires, thus dividing the matrix into mesh units that contribute to directional lithium‐ion flux and dendrite‐free deposition on the metallic anode. The CGPE, based on the state‐of‐the‐art self‐luminous framework, facilitates high‐performance quasi‐solid‐state Li||LiFePO4 cell, registering a high capacity of 143.3 mAh g−1 after 120 cycles at a mass loading of 12 mg cm−2. X‐ray computed tomography provides an insight into the relationship between directional lithium‐ion diffusion and lithium deposition behavior over the electrochemical processes. The results open a door to improve the electrochemical performances of composite electrolytes in various applications.

Summary: Background: In early March 2022, a major outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant spread rapidly throughout Shanghai, China. Here we aimed to provide a description of the epidemiological characteristics and spatiotemporal transmission dynamics of the Omicron outbreak under the population-based screening and lockdown policies implemented in Shanghai. Methods: We extracted individual information on SARS-CoV-2 infections reported between January 1 and May 31, 2022, and on the timeline of the adopted non-pharmaceutical interventions. The epidemic was divided into three phases: i) sporadic infections (January 1–February 28), ii) local transmission (March 1–March 31), and iii) city-wide lockdown (April 1 to May 31). We described the epidemic spread during these three phases and the subdistrict-level spatiotemporal distribution of the infections. To evaluate the impact on the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 of the adopted targeted interventions in Phase 2 and city-wide lockdown in Phase 3, we estimated the dynamics of the net reproduction number (Rt). Findings: A surge in imported infections in Phase 1 triggered cryptic local transmission of the Omicron variant in early March, resulting in the largest outbreak in mainland China since the original wave. A total of 626,000 SARS-CoV-2 infections were reported in 99.5% (215/216) of the subdistricts of Shanghai until the end of May. The spatial distribution of the infections was highly heterogeneous, with 37% of the subdistricts accounting for 80% of all infections. A clear trend from the city center towards adjacent suburban and rural areas was observed, with a progressive slowdown of the epidemic spread (from 463 to 244 meters/day) prior to the citywide lockdown. During Phase 2, Rt remained well above 1 despite the implementation of multiple targeted interventions. The citywide lockdown imposed on April 1 led to a marked decrease in transmission, bringing Rt below the epidemic threshold in the entire city on April 14 and ultimately leading to containment of the outbreak. Interpretation: Our results highlight the risk of widespread outbreaks in mainland China, particularly under the heightened pressure of imported infections. The targeted interventions adopted in March 2022 were not capable of halting transmission, and the implementation of a strict, prolonged city-wide lockdown was needed to successfully contain the outbreak, highlighting the challenges for containing Omicron outbreaks. In this paper, the effects of different modification orders of microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) and contents of pectin (0.1–0.5%, w/v) on the gelling and structural properties of fish gelatin (FG) and the modification mechanism were studied. The results showed that the addition of pectin could overcome the phenomenon of high-MTGase-induced lower gelling strength of gelatin gels. At a low pectin content, the modification sequences had non-significant influence on the gelling properties of modified FG, but at a higher pectin content (0.5%, w/v), P0.5%-FG-TG had higher gel strength (751.99 ± 10.9 g) and hardness (14.91 ± 0.33 N) values than those of TG-FG-P0.5% (687.67 ± 20.98 g, 12.18 ± 0.45 N). Rheology analysis showed that the addition of pectin normally improved the gelation points and melting points of FG. The structural results showed that the fluorescence intensity of FG was decreased with the increase in pectin concentration. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated that the MTGase and pectin complex modifications could influence the secondary structure of FG, but the influenced mechanisms were different. FG was firstly modified by MTGase, and then pectin (P-FG-TG) had the higher gelling and stability properties.

At present, the positioning control of the hydraulic support pushing systems in fully mechanized mining faces uses an electrohydraulic directional valve as the control component, while the current research mainly focuses on servo valves, proportional valves, high−speed on−off valves, and electromagnetic directional valves. At present, the positioning control for electrohydraulic directional valves is only a simple logical control. Therefore, in order to improve the positioning control accuracy of the hydraulic support pushing system, a predictive positioning control strategy based on iterative learning was designed. Firstly, mathematical modeling of the hydraulic support pulling process was carried out, and its state−space equation was established. Secondly, an iterative learning controller with a state observer was designed, in which the iterative learning method was used to predict the control advance in the positioning process, and the state observer was used to estimate the parameters that could not be measured by the system, so as to improve the control accuracy in the broaching process. Then, a SimulationX–Simulink joint simulation model of the position control system of a multi−cylinder pulling hydraulic support was built, and the designed iterative learning controller was compared with the BP neural network controller. Finally, a test platform for the hydraulic support pushing system was built, and the proposed control strategy was experimentally verified. The research results show that the iterative learning control strategy proposed for the electrohydraulic directional valve not only simplifies the design process of the controller but also has higher positioning control accuracy. The single−cylinder positioning control accuracy can be controlled within 10 mm, and the multi−cylinder coordinated positioning control accuracy can be controlled within 15 mm, which meets the accuracy requirements of the site.

Detailed knowledge of COVID-19 epidemiology is needed to inform public health responses. Here, the authors use large-scale contact tracing data to provide empirical estimates of key parameters, and show that susceptibility increases with age but transmissibility does not vary significantly.

In South Korea, the coronavirus disease outbreak peaked at the end of February and subsided in mid-March. We analyzed the likely roles of social distancing in reducing transmission. Our analysis indicated that although transmission might persist in some regions, epidemics can be suppressed with less extreme measures than those taken by China.

A novel bidirectional remotely controlled device for static and dynamic compression/decompression using diamond anvil cells (DACs) has been developed that can control pressure in an accurate and consistent manner. Electromechanical piezoelectric actuators are applied to a conventional DAC, allowing applications under a variety of pressure conditions. Using this static and dynamic DAC (s-dDAC), it is possible to addresses the poorly studied experimental regime lying between purely static and purely dynamic studies. The s-dDAC, driven by three piezoelectric actuators, can be combined with a time-resolved spectral measurement system and high-speed imaging device to study the structural changes, chemical reactions, and properties of materials under extreme conditions. The maximum compression/decompression rate or pressure range highly depends on the culet size of the anvil, and a higher compression rate and wider pressure range can be realized in a DAC with smaller anvil culet. With our s-dDAC, we have been able to achieve the highest compression rate to date with a 300 μm culet anvil: 48 TPa/s. An overview of a variety of experimental measurements possible with our device is presented.

The effects of ultrasound-assisted glycosylation (UG) with glucose (GLU) on the emulsifying properties, foaming properties, gelling properties, and structural properties of fish gelatin (FG) were investigated. It was shown that UG with high power and a long duration facilitated the Maillard reaction through the reduction of the free amino acid contents. UG significantly improved the emulsifying ability index and foaming capacity of FG whilst decreasing the gel strength. Rheological analysis showed that UG modification prolonged the gelling time by hindering the triple-helix formation and decreasing the apparent viscosity of the gelatin solution. Structural analysis showed that UG treatment changed the secondary structure of the gelatin molecule by the formation of Millard reaction products (MRPs). Moreover, the UG treatment generally decreased the bound water contents of the gelatin gels with an increase in free water.

The prevalence of diabetes is consistently rising worldwide. Diabetic nephropathy is a leading cause of chronic renal failure. The present study aimed to explore the crosstalk among the different cell types inside diabetic glomeruli, including glomerular endothelial cells, mesangial cells, podocytes, and immune cells, by analyzing an online single-cell RNA profile (GSE131882) of patients with diabetic nephropathy. Differentially expressed genes in the glomeruli were processed by gene enrichment and protein-protein interactions analysis. Glomerular endothelial cells, as well as podocytes, play a critical role in diabetic nephropathy. A subgroup of glomerular endothelial cells possesses characteristic angiogenesis genes, indicating that angiogenesis takes place in the progress of diabetic nephropathy. Immune cells such as macrophages, T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and plasma cells also contribute to the disease progression. By using iTALK, the present study reports complicated cellular crosstalk inside glomeruli. Dysfunction of glomerular endothelial cells and immature angiogenesis result from the activation of both paracrine and autocrine signals. The present study reinforces the importance of glomerular endothelial cells in the development of diabetic nephropathy. The exploration of the signaling pathways involved in aberrant angiogenesis reported in the present study shed light on potential therapeutic target(s) for diabetic nephropathy.

Summary: In this work, a spinel single-crystalline Li1.1Mn1.9O4 has been successfully synthesized using β-MnO2 nanotubes as the self-sacrifice template. The tubular morphology was retained through solid-state reactions, attributed to a minimal structural reorganization from tetragonal β-MnO2 to spinel Li1.1Mn1.9O4. The materials were investigated as sorbents for lithium recovery from LiCl solutions, recycled using H2SO4 and (NH4)2S2O8. Li1.1Mn1.9O4 nanotubes exhibited favorable lithium extraction behavior due to tubular nanostructure, single-crystalline nature, and high crystallinity. (NH4)2S2O8 eluent ensures the structural stability of Li1.1Mn1.9O4 nanotube, registering a Li+ adsorption capacity of 39.21 mg g−1 (∼89.73% of the theoretical capacity) with only 0.08% manganese dissolution after eight adsorption/desorption cycles, compared to that of 1.21% for H2SO4. It reveals the degradation of sorbent involves with the volume change, Mn reduction, and Li/Mn ratio depletion. New strategies, based on nanotube adsorbent and (NH4)2S2O8 eluent, can extract lithium ions at satisfactorily high degrees while effectively minimizing manganese dissolution.

The prospect of universal influenza vaccines is generating much interest and research at the intersection of immunology, epidemiology, and viral evolution. While the current focus is on developing a vaccine that elicits a broadly cross-reactive immune response in clinical trials, there are important downstream questions about global deployment of a universal influenza vaccine that should be explored to minimize unintended consequences and maximize benefits. Here, we review and synthesize the questions most relevant to predicting the population benefits of universal influenza vaccines and discuss how existing information could be mined to begin to address these questions. We review three research topics where computational modeling could bring valuable evidence: immune imprinting, viral evolution, and transmission. We address the positive and negative consequences of imprinting, in which early childhood exposure to influenza shapes and limits immune responses to future infections via memory of conserved influenza antigens. However, the mechanisms at play, their effectiveness, breadth of protection, and the ability to "reprogram" already imprinted individuals, remains heavily debated. We describe instances of rapid influenza evolution that illustrate the plasticity of the influenza virus in the face of drug pressure and discuss how novel vaccines could introduce new selective pressures on the evolution of the virus. We examine the possible unintended consequences of broadly protective (but infection-permissive) vaccines on the dynamics of epidemic and pandemic influenza, compared to conventional vaccines that have been shown to provide herd immunity benefits. In conclusion, computational modeling offers a valuable tool to anticipate the benefits of ambitious universal influenza vaccine programs, while balancing the risks from endemic influenza strains and unpredictable pandemic viruses. Moving forward, it will be important to mine the vast amount of data generated in clinical studies of universal influenza vaccines to ensure that the benefits and consequences of these vaccine programs have been carefully modeled and explored.

The effects of silicone oil viscosity (SOV), carbonyl iron particles (CIPs) weight fraction and size on the yield dimensionless magnetic effect (DME) and shear-thinning behavior for magnetorheological (MR) grease were experimentally investigated in this study. Nine MR greases were prepared using Taguchi L9 orthogonal array based on an unconventional synthesis technique. The yield DME, namely the controllability of magnetic effect relative to viscous effect under the on-state magnetic fields and zero shear rate, was observed to be closely related to CIPs fraction based upon significance assessment and percent contribution (PC) comparison, whereas the shear-thinning behavior of suspension was dependent on the CIPs fraction and SOV. According to the analysis of discrepancy direction at the presence of magnetic fields, there was a negative linear correlation between yield DME and CIPs fraction, but the shear thinning had positive linear correlation with the CIPs fraction and SOV. Furthermore, the PC and the corresponding actual contribution values (ACV) of SOV and CIPs fraction towards the shear thinning showed distinct characteristics which were relevant to the critical magnetic fields. This study presented a hypothesis in which the difference of relative evolution rate between fiber structures and magnetic constructions under shearing and different magnetic fields caused the differences of PC and ACV of SOV and CIPs fraction to suspensions-viscosity attenuation.

Summary: Background: As the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) progresses, epidemiological data are needed to guide situational awareness and intervention strategies. Here we describe efforts to compile and disseminate epidemiological information on COVID-19 from news media and social networks. Methods: In this population-level observational study, we searched DXY.cn, a health-care-oriented social network that is currently streaming news reports on COVID-19 from local and national Chinese health agencies. We compiled a list of individual patients with COVID-19 and daily province-level case counts between Jan 13 and Jan 31, 2020, in China. We also compiled a list of internationally exported cases of COVID-19 from global news media sources (Kyodo News, The Straits Times, and CNN), national governments, and health authorities. We assessed trends in the epidemiology of COVID-19 and studied the outbreak progression across China, assessing delays between symptom onset, seeking care at a hospital or clinic, and reporting, before and after Jan 18, 2020, as awareness of the outbreak increased. All data were made publicly available in real time. Findings: We collected data for 507 patients with COVID-19 reported between Jan 13 and Jan 31, 2020, including 364 from mainland China and 143 from outside of China. 281 (55%) patients were male and the median age was 46 years (IQR 35–60). Few patients (13 [3%]) were younger than 15 years and the age profile of Chinese patients adjusted for baseline demographics confirmed a deficit of infections among children. Across the analysed period, delays between symptom onset and seeking care at a hospital or clinic were longer in Hubei province than in other provinces in mainland China and internationally. In mainland China, these delays decreased from 5 days before Jan 18, 2020, to 2 days thereafter until Jan 31, 2020 (p=0·0009). Although our sample captures only 507 (5·2%) of 9826 patients with COVID-19 reported by official sources during the analysed period, our data align with an official report published by Chinese authorities on Jan 28, 2020. Interpretation: News reports and social media can help reconstruct the progression of an outbreak and provide detailed patient-level data in the context of a health emergency. The availability of a central physician-oriented social network facilitated the compilation of publicly available COVID-19 data in China. As the outbreak progresses, social media and news reports will probably capture a diminishing fraction of COVID-19 cases globally due to reporting fatigue and overwhelmed health-care systems. In the early stages of an outbreak, availability of public datasets is important to encourage analytical efforts by independent teams and provide robust evidence to guide interventions. Abstract Background Local mosquito-borne Zika virus (ZIKV) transmission has been reported in two counties in the contiguous United States (US), prompting the issuance of travel, prevention, and testing guidance across the contiguous US. Large uncertainty, however, surrounds the quantification of the actual risk of ZIKV introduction and autochthonous transmission across different areas of the US. Methods We present a framework for the projection of ZIKV autochthonous transmission in the contiguous US during the 2015–2016 epidemic using a data-driven stochastic and spatial epidemic model accounting for seasonal, environmental, and detailed population data. The model generates an ensemble of travel-related case counts and simulates their potential to have triggered local transmission at the individual level in the 2015–2016 ZIKV epidemic. Results We estimate the risk of ZIKV introduction and local transmission at the county level and at the 0.025° × 0.025° cell level across the contiguous US. We provide a risk measure based on the probability of observing local transmission in a specific location during a ZIKV epidemic modeled after the epidemic observed during the years 2015–2016. The high spatial and temporal resolution of the model allows us to generate statistical estimates of the number of ZIKV introductions leading to local transmission in each location. We find that the risk was spatially heterogeneously distributed and concentrated in a few specific areas that account for less than 1% of the contiguous US population. Locations in Texas and Florida that have actually experienced local ZIKV transmission were among the places at highest risk according to our results. We also provide an analysis of the key determinants for local transmission and identify the key introduction routes and their contributions to ZIKV transmission in the contiguous US. Conclusions This framework provides quantitative risk estimates, fully captures the stochasticity of ZIKV introduction events, and is not biased by the under-ascertainment of cases due to asymptomatic cases. It provides general information on key risk determinants and data with potential uses in defining public health recommendations and guidance about ZIKV risk in the US.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of nimotuzumab combined with radiotherapy (RT) in elderly patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical data of 75 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients, who were initially treated with nimotuzumab combined with RT, were collected and retrospectively reviewed from December 2008 to April 2014. They were aged 60 to 81 years (median 64 years). The distribution of disease was stage II in 10 (13.3%), stage III in 33 (44.0%), and stage IV in 32 (42.7%). Among these patients, 59 cases received cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Survival outcomes and treatment toxicity were analyzed using IBM SPSS 19.0 software. RESULTS: With a median follow-up of 45 months (range, 13-78 months), the estimated 3-year local recurrence-free survival (LRFS), regional recurrence-free survival (RRFS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), progression failure-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) rates were 95.6%, 95.5%, 98.6%, 89.7%, and 89.2%, respectively. In the subgroup, 3-year OS rate in the patients with concurrent chemotherapy was 90.5% and 77.4% in patients without concurrent chemotherapy (Log-Rank = 1.795, P = .180). Univariate analysis showed that T stage and clinical stage were correlated with OS. Multivariate analysis indicated that age, T stage and tumor response at the end of treatment were independent prognosticators. Nine patients experienced grade 3 to 4 acute mucositis and 26 patients experienced grade 3-4 leukocytopenia, with no cases of skin rash and infusion reaction. Twelve patients developed mild liver function damage. No serious gastrointestinal or renal toxicities were observed. CONCLUSION: The efficacy of combined nimotuzumab with RT in elderly NPC patients was encouraging and the toxicities were accepted. In addition, nimotuzumab provides a better option for elderly patients who cannot be tolerate chemotherapy.

The Ebola forecasting challenge organized by the Research and Policy for Infectious Disease Dynamics (RAPIDD) program of the Fogarty International Center relies on synthetic disease datasets generated by numerical simulations of a highly detailed spatially-structured agent-based model. We discuss here the architecture and technical steps of the challenge, leading to datasets that mimic as much as possible the data collection, reporting, and communication process experienced in the 2014–2015 West African Ebola outbreak. We provide a detailed discussion of the model's definition, the epidemiological scenarios’ construction, synthetic patient database generation and the data communication platform used during the challenge. Finally we offer a number of considerations and takeaways concerning the extension and scalability of synthetic challenges to other infectious diseases. Infectious disease forecasting is gaining traction in the public health community; however, limited systematic comparisons of model performance exist. Here we present the results of a synthetic forecasting challenge inspired by the West African Ebola crisis in 2014–2015 and involving 16 international academic teams and US government agencies, and compare the predictive performance of 8 independent modeling approaches. Challenge participants were invited to predict 140 epidemiological targets across 5 different time points of 4 synthetic Ebola outbreaks, each involving different levels of interventions and “fog of war” in outbreak data made available for predictions. Prediction targets included 1–4 week-ahead case incidences, outbreak size, peak timing, and several natural history parameters. With respect to weekly case incidence targets, ensemble predictions based on a Bayesian average of the 8 participating models outperformed any individual model and did substantially better than a null auto-regressive model. There was no relationship between model complexity and prediction accuracy; however, the top performing models for short-term weekly incidence were reactive models with few parameters, fitted to a short and recent part of the outbreak. Individual model outputs and ensemble predictions improved with data accuracy and availability; by the second time point, just before the peak of the epidemic, estimates of final size were within 20% of the target. The 4th challenge scenario − mirroring an uncontrolled Ebola outbreak with substantial data reporting noise − was poorly predicted by all modeling teams. Overall, this synthetic forecasting challenge provided a deep understanding of model performance under controlled data and epidemiological conditions. We recommend such “peace time” forecasting challenges as key elements to improve coordination and inspire collaboration between modeling groups ahead of the next pandemic threat, and to assess model forecasting accuracy for a variety of known and hypothetical pathogens. Abstract We investigate the effects of modular and temporal connectivity patterns on epidemic spreading. To this end, we introduce and analytically characterise a model of time-varying networks with tunable modularity. Within this framework, we study the epidemic size of Susceptible-Infected-Recovered, SIR, models and the epidemic threshold of Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible, SIS, models. Interestingly, we find that while the presence of tightly connected clusters inhibits SIR processes, it speeds up SIS phenomena. In this case, we observe that modular structures induce a reduction of the threshold with respect to time-varying networks without communities. We confirm the theoretical results by means of extensive numerical simulations both on synthetic graphs as well as on a real modular and temporal network.

For comprehensive understanding of practical application and evaluation on the power of 30 commonly used InDels (Qiagen Investigator DIPplex® kit), we captured population data from 25 Chinese populations and employed F-statistics for population genetics analysis. The results indicated that the distributions of allelic frequencies among populations were in different levels. Furthermore, the phylogeny conforming pairwise FSTdistances showed that the differentiation of majority populations were consistent with their geographic locations and historic dispersals. We conduct the comprehensive correlation analysis between FSTand heterozygosity of 30 InDel loci and provided strong evidence for ongoing InDel loci selection. The FSTvalues of 30 InDels were calculated within 25 Chinese populations, and then, these loci were characterized definitely based on their roles in population genetics or individual identification. The interaction mechanism between vitrinite and inertinite of Xinjiang Wucaiwan coal during coal pyrolysis was investigated via ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicated that the interaction reactions between vitrinite and inertinite of Wucaiwan coal could be divided into three categories: (1) two active hydrogen atoms respectively heated out of the two macromolecular structures and interacted with each other, producing H2; (2) the aliphatic hydrocarbon free radicals, oxygen-containing radicals and other small free radical fragments consisting of cyclic structure that are generated by the cracking of vitrinite macromolecule and interacted with radicals belonging to the inertinite macromolecule and formed new interaction products; (3) residual fragments of the vitrinite and inertinite macromolecules combined with each other and formed a large molecular structure interaction product with more than 40 carbon atoms.

Although induction chemotherapy (IC) combined with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) plus concurrent chemotherapy (CC) is the new standard treatment option in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), many patients fail to receive CC. The aim of this study was to investigate long-term survival outcomes and toxicities in these patients who are treated with IC before IMRT without CC.We retrospectively reviewed 332 untreated, newly diagnosed locoregionally advanced NPC patients who received IC before IMRT alone at our institution from May 2008 through April 2014. The IC was administered every 3 weeks for 1 to 4 cycles. Acute and late radiation-related toxicities were graded according to the acute and late radiation morbidity scoring criteria of the radiation therapy oncology group. The accumulated survival was calculated according to the Kaplan-Meier method. The log-rank test was used to compare the difference in survival.With a median follow-up duration of 65 months (range: 8-110 months), the 5-year estimated locoregional relapse-free survival, distant metastasis-free survival, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival rates were 93.4%, 91.7%, 85.8%, and 82.5%, respectively. Older age and advanced T stage were adverse prognostic factors for overall survival, and the absence of comorbidity was a favorable prognostic factor for PFS. However, acceptable acute complications were observed in these patients.IC combined with IMRT alone provides promising long-term survival outcomes with manageable toxicities. Therefore, the omission of CC from the standard treatment did not affect survival outcomes.

In this study, we examined whether combining neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and/or concurrent chemotherapy (CC) with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) improved survival in patients with stage II nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Two hundred forty-two stage II NPC patients were enrolled between May 2008 and April 2014 and received radical IMRT with simultaneous integrated boost technique using 6 MV photons; some patient groups also received chemotherapy every 3 weeks for 2-3 cycles. The median follow-up duration was 69 months for all patients. At the last follow-up, 18 patients had experienced treatment failure; locoregional relapse among the IMRT alone, NAC+IMRT, NAC+CCRT, and CCRT occurred in 3, 3, 4 and 5, respectively; distant metastases in 0, 0, 2 and 1, respectively, and there was a statistically significant difference among four groups (P=0.019). The 5-year locoregional relapse-free survival (LRRFS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) rates for all patients were 94.7%, 98.7%, 92.9%, and 93.4%, respectively. Five-year LRRFS, DMFS, PFS, and OS were similar among the IMRT alone, NAC+IMRT, NAC+CCRT, and CCRT treatment groups. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that a combined regimen was not an independent prognostic factor for any survival outcome. However, patients who received IMRT plus chemotherapy experienced more acute adverse events than those who received IMRT alone. Thus, the addition of NAC and/or CC to IMRT did not improve survival outcomes, but was associated with higher incidences of acute treatment-associated toxicities than IMRT alone in patients with stage II NPC., Competing Interests: Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interest exists.
