Abstract

The aim of the study was assessment of the influence of stainless steel 316 LVM surface modification on its functional properties. The analyzed steel undergone a surface treatment consisting of the following processes: mechanical polishing, chemical passivation and deposition of Al2O3 layers by Atomic Layer Deposition method. The proposed variant of surface treatment will undoubtedly contribute to improving the functional properties of stainless steel intended for implants. In order to assess functional properties of the steel, electrochemical studies, adhesion (scratch test), wetting angle tests and topography of surface (AFM method) were performed. The obtained results of the study showed clearly that the proposed by the authors way of surface treatment including: mechanical polishing, chemical passivation and deposition of Al2O3 layer by means of the ALD method effectively improves the corrosion resistance of stainless steel.

Abstract

Brachinites are igneous, ultramafic and unbrecciated primitive achondrites mainly composed of olivine and pyroxene, with a partial melt residue or cumulate origin that is still debated. This study presents a petrological and microstructural study of 10 brachinite meteorites to identify igneous and deformation processes responsible for their formation. Detailed microstructural analyses were performed using secondary electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, and electron backscatter diffraction. The olivine‐spinel and two‐pyroxene closure temperatures of these brachinites ranged from 814 ± 27 to 909 ± 20°C. Olivine [001] axes coincide with the elongation of olivine grains and the crystallographic preferred orientations (CPO) of clinopyroxene [001] axes, which led us to infer lineation as olivine [001] axes parallel to X for all samples. Olivine CPO displays a strong or medium concentration of [001] axes parallel to X and [010] axes parallel to Z pointing to a B‐type fabric. Limited internal deformation of olivine grains and slip systems identified from low‐angle boundary misorientation analyses are inconsistent with the CPO and grain misorientation distributions are close to those found in untextured rocks. Olivine B‐type fabrics may therefore result not from plastic deformation but rather from rigid crystal rotation or preferential crystal growth during compaction. Olivine subgrain boundary misorientation axes imply limited activation of [001](100) and [100](001) slip systems, which could be due to primary plastic deformation during or after crystal settling. These new results reveal that brachinites developed a cumulate texture and accommodated only weak plastic deformation during early differentiation processes in the parent body. However, the precise way in which they formed is still a subject of debate. This study conducted a thorough petrological and microstructural examination of 10 brachinites using scanning electron microscopy, microprobe, and electron backscatter diffraction. The findings reveal that the closure temperatures of the brachinites are between 814 ± 27 and 909 ± 20°C. Olivine crystal preferred orientations (CPO) indicate a B‐type fabric [001](010), characterized by a strong to moderate concentration of [001] axes (slip direction) parallel to the lineation and [010] axes (slip plane) perpendicular to the foliation. Grain misorientation distributions resemble those found in untextured rocks (e.g., undeformed granular peridotite), implying that the B‐type fabrics in olivine were a result of rigid crystal rotation or preferential crystal growth during cumulate formation or melt flow alignment and weak compaction. Olivine subgrain boundary misorientation axes suggest limited activation of [001](100) C‐type and [100](001) E‐type slip systems, which could be the result of compaction and primary plastic deformation during or after crystal settling. Abstract

Objectives To investigate the effect of ACE inhibitors (ACEi) on the incidence of scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) when given prior to SRC in the prospectively collected cohort from the European Scleroderma Trial and Research Group (EUSTAR). Methods SSc patients without prior SRC and at least one follow-up visit were included and analyzed regarding SRC, arterial hypertension, and medication focusing on antihypertensive medication and glucocorticoids (GC). Results Out of 14,524 patients in the database, we identified 7648 patients with at least one follow-up. In 27,450 person-years (py), 102 patients developed SRC representing an incidence of 3.72 (3.06–4.51) per 1000 py. In a multivariable time-to-event analysis adjusted for age, sex, disease severity, and onset, 88 of 6521 patients developed SRC. The use of ACEi displayed an increased risk for the development of SRC with a hazard ratio (HR) of 2.55 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.65–3.95). Adjusting for arterial hypertension resulted in a HR of 2.04 (95%CI 1.29–3.24). There was no evidence for an interaction of ACEi and arterial hypertension (HR 0.83, 95%CI 0.32–2.13, p = 0.69). Calcium channel blockers (CCB), angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), endothelin receptor antagonists, and GC—mostly in daily dosages below 15 mg of prednisolone—did not influence the hazard for SRC. Conclusions ACEi in SSc patients with concomitant arterial hypertension display an independent risk factor for the development of SRC but are still first choice in SRC treatment. ARBs might be a safe alternative, yet the overall safety of alternative antihypertensive drugs in SSc patients needs to be further studied.

Abstract

This article describes the measurement techniques used for the study of mechanisms of electrical discharge development in ester fluids under lightning impulse voltage. These techniques were applied in a laboratory experimental system which enabled the acquisition of a wide range of experimental data. An analysis of the data gives the possibility of assessing the processes responsible for electrical discharge propagation in different types of dielectric liquids. The photographic registration system provides photographs of developing discharges. This uses the shadowgraph method with an impulse laser as a flash lamp. The system of light emission registration enables collection of the time courses of light emitted by the developing discharge. Both systems operating together are synchronized using light guide communication. They are also unaffected by external disturbances such as network overvoltages and high electrical field stress. Preliminary results obtained on the basis of the described techniques, in the field of electrical discharge development in synthetic and natural esters, are presented in the article. These results confirm suitability of the methods used and give the possibility to formulate first conclusions.

Abstract

Emotions are the effect but also the cause of eating behaviors, including the purchase and consumption of snacks. As snacks become an increasingly prevalent segment of the food industry, their consumption has been linked to rising rates of overweight, obesity, and diet-related diseases. Understanding how emotional valence influences consumer attitudes and behaviors toward snacks is therefore crucial. This study explores the relationship between emotional eating and the propensity to consume unhealthy snacks, both sweet and salty. A survey of 707 representative participants revealed distinct emotional patterns in snack consumption, with choices significantly influenced by consumers' emotional states and personal preferences. Furthermore, individuals who frequently opted for unhealthy snacks typically exhibited poorer health and financial profiles.

Abstract

In this study, the structural, luminescence and photoconversion properties of novel composite color converters based on Tb1.5Gd1.5Al5O12:Ce (TGAG:Ce) single crystalline films, grown by the liquid phase epitaxy method onto Y3Al5O12:Ce (YAG:Ce) single crystal substrates, are investigated. The luminescence and chromaticity properties for the set of TGAG:Ce SCF/YAG:Ce composite color converters, including color coordinates, color rendering index (CRI), and luminous efficacy, were studied by varying the thickness of the TGAG:Ce film in the 12–48 μm range and the Ce3+ concentration in the 0.1–0.5% range in YAG:Ce substrates. Such combination of different YAG:Ce substrates with various TGAG:Ce films enables tuning the white light tones from cold white (correlated color temperature (CCT) > 6000 K) to neutral white (6000 K > CCT > 3300 K). The theoretical white light color coordinates on the chromaticity diagram were almost achieved for TGAG:Ce film/YAG:Ce (0.5 mm) crystal converters with a film thickness between 19 and 25 μm under 465 nm LED excitation, with the corresponding CRI values in the 79–74 range. The developed composite color converters allow the problem of a high color temperature and low color rendering index of conventional WLEDs based on conventional YAG:Ce phosphor converters to be solved. Abstract

Objectives Racial factors play a significant role in SSc. We evaluated differences in SSc presentations between white patients (WP), Asian patients (AP) and black patients (BP) and analysed the effects of geographical locations. Methods SSc characteristics of patients from the EUSTAR cohort were cross-sectionally compared across racial groups using survival and multiple logistic regression analyses. Results The study included 9162 WP, 341 AP and 181 BP. AP developed the first non-RP feature faster than WP but slower than BP. AP were less frequently anti-centromere (ACA; odds ratio (OR) = 0.4, P < 0.001) and more frequently anti-topoisomerase-I autoantibodies (ATA) positive (OR = 1.2, P = 0.068), while BP were less likely to be ACA and ATA positive than were WP [OR(ACA) = 0.3, P < 0.001; OR(ATA) = 0.5, P = 0.020]. AP had less often (OR = 0.7, P = 0.06) and BP more often (OR = 2.7, P < 0.001) diffuse skin involvement than had WP. AP and BP were more likely to have pulmonary hypertension [OR(AP) = 2.6, P < 0.001; OR(BP) = 2.7, P = 0.03 vs WP] and a reduced forced vital capacity [OR(AP) = 2.5, P < 0.001; OR(BP) = 2.4, P < 0.004] than were WP. AP more often had an impaired diffusing capacity of the lung than had BP and WP [OR(AP vs BP) = 1.9, P = 0.038; OR(AP vs WP) = 2.4, P < 0.001]. After RP onset, AP and BP had a higher hazard to die than had WP [hazard ratio (HR) (AP) = 1.6, P = 0.011; HR(BP) = 2.1, P < 0.001]. Conclusion Compared with WP, and mostly independent of geographical location, AP have a faster and earlier disease onset with high prevalences of ATA, pulmonary hypertension and forced vital capacity impairment and higher mortality. BP had the fastest disease onset, a high prevalence of diffuse skin involvement and nominally the highest mortality.
