Urban environments are the primary contributors to global anthropogenic carbon emissions. Because much of the growth in CO2 emissions will originate from cities, there is a need to develop, assess, and improve measurement and modeling strategies for quantifying and monitoring greenhouse gas emissions from large urban centers. In this study the uncertainties in an aircraft-based mass balance approach for quantifying carbon dioxide and methane emissions from an urban environment, focusing on Indianapolis, IN, USA, are described. The relatively level terrain of Indianapolis facilitated the application of mean wind fields in the mass balance approach. We investigate the uncertainties in our aircraft-based mass balance approach by (1) assessing the sensitivity of the measured flux to important measurement and analysis parameters including wind speed, background CO2 and CH4, boundary layer depth, and interpolation technique, and (2) determining the flux at two or more downwind distances from a point or area source (with relatively large source strengths such as solid waste facilities and a power generating station) in rapid succession, assuming that the emission flux is constant. When we quantify the precision in the approach by comparing the estimated emissions derived from measurements at two or more downwind distances from an area or point source, we find that the minimum and maximum repeatability were 12 and 52%, with an average of 31%. We suggest that improvements in the experimental design can be achieved by careful determination of the background concentration, monitoring the evolution of the boundary layer through the measurement period, and increasing the number of downwind horizontal transect measurements at multiple altitudes within the boundary layer.

Abstract We report the CH4 emission flux from the city of Indianapolis, IN, the site of the Indianapolis Flux Experiment (INFLUX) project for developing, assessing, and improving top-down and bottom-up approaches for quantifying urban greenhouse gas emissions. Using an aircraft-based mass balance approach, we find that the average CH4 emission rate from five flight experiments in 2011 is 135 ± 58 (1σ) moles s-1 (7800 ± 3300 kg hr-1). The effective per capita CH4 emission rate for Indianapolis is 77 kg CH4 person-1 yr-1, a figure that is less than the national anthropogenic CH4 emission (∼91 kg CH4 person-1 yr-1) but considerably larger than the global figure (∼48 kg CH4 person-1 yr-1). We consistently observed elevated CH4 concentrations at specific coordinates along our flight transects downwind of the city. Inflight investigations as well as back trajectories using measured wind directions showed that the elevated concentrations originated from the southwest side of the city where a landfill and a natural gas transmission regulating station (TRS) are located. Street level mobile measurements downwind of the landfill and the TRS supported the results of aircraft-based data, and were used to quantify the relative contributions from the two sources. We find that the CH4 emission from the TRS was negligible relative to the landfill, which was responsible for 33 ± 10% of the citywide emission flux. A regression of propane versus methane from aircraft flask samples suggests that the remaining citywide CH4 emissions (∼67%) derive from the natural gas distribution system. We discuss the combination of surface mobile observations and aircraft city-wide flux measurements to determine the total flux and apportionment to important sources.

As biometric technology relies on bodily, physical information, it is among the more intrusive technologies in the contemporary consumer market. Consumer products containing biometric technology are becoming more popular and normalized, yet little is known about public perceptions concerning its privacy implications, especially from the perspective of human agency. This study examines how people perceive biometric technologies in different societal contexts and via different agents in control. Our study revealed that, in large part, people’s perceptions of biometric technology are context-dependent, based on who retrieves and who benefits from the information and the situation where the data are collected. Participants were much more comfortable with more intrusive biometric technology in airport security than in a grocery store, and if it was employed to improve their health. We conclude by considering the implications of the survey for new threats to personal privacy that arise out of emerging technologies.

Many livestock and human vaccines are leaky because they block symptoms but do not prevent infection or onward transmission. This leakiness is concerning because it increases vaccination coverage required to prevent disease spread and can promote evolution of increased pathogen virulence. Despite leakiness, vaccination may reduce pathogen load, affecting disease transmission dynamics. However, the impacts on post-transmission disease development and infectiousness in contact individuals are unknown. Here, we use transmission experiments involving Marek disease virus (MDV) in chickens to show that vaccination with a leaky vaccine substantially reduces viral load in both vaccinated individuals and unvaccinated contact individuals they infect. Consequently, contact birds are less likely to develop disease symptoms or die, show less severe symptoms, and shed less infectious virus themselves, when infected by vaccinated birds. These results highlight that even partial vaccination with a leaky vaccine can have unforeseen positive consequences in controlling the spread and symptoms of disease.

Introduction Since December 2019, the coronavirus pandemic has led to the deaths of almost 4.37 million people worldwide and 21,905 people in Tunisia. Containment measures, stress due to fear of infection by the virus and death are likely to be traumatic events, particularly in adolescents, and may lead to the development of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Objectives To determine the prevalence of PTSD in a population of adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic and to identify the factors associated with it. Methods This study was a cross-sectional among a representative sample of students enrolled in secondary schools, in the region of Hamma- Gabes. We used a pre-established information sheet comprising 27 questions exploring sociodemographic and family data and specific data relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Arabic version of The Child PTSD Symptom Scale (CPSS) was used to screen for PTSD symptoms. Results 326 adolescents were collected which the mean age was 16.6 years (14 to 18 years). The family environment was conflictual in 11.9% of cases. Among the adolescents, 5.5% had a history of somatic pathology. A history of psychiatric pathology was noted in 0.6%, dominated by depression. Personal infection by Covid-19 was noted in 4% of adolescents. A family member was affected in 27.3% of cases. Adolescents were exposed to the death of a close relative in 22.4% of cases. PTSD was diagnosed (according to the CPSS) in 37.4% of cases, with mild severity in 6.5%, moderate in 0.6%, moderately severe in 8%, severe in 5.2% and extremely severe in 17.2%. Introduction Child depression is a public health problem. Its association with internet addiction (IA) could increase the frequency of complications and have a significant impact on the child’s psychological well-being, schooling, family and social life. Objectives To study the clinical profile and associated factors of IA in a population of primary school children with depressive disorders. Methods This was a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study of 182 children with depression attending four primary schools in the government of Sfax. The study took place from 1 March 2022 to 30 June 2022. In the present study, we administered the following psychometric scales: Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Revised Children’s Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS- 47), Birleson Depression Scale Questionnaire and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Results The mean age of the children studied was 9.9 ±1.17 years and the sex ratio was 0.8. Mean score of Internet Addiction Test was 40 ±4,46. In addition, Internet addiction was identified in 73.6% of students with depression (N=143). Following a univariate analysis, internet addiction among depressed Childrens was positively correlated to individual factors such as the absence of leisure activity, the number of hours per day spent on the internet (1.63 VS 3.25, P < 0.001) and interest in accessing Tiktok (p=0.002). Internet addiction in depressed children also depended on family factors. Internet addiction was more common among childrens with a medium to high family socio-economic level (P < 0.001) in cases where parent-child communication was deemed unsatisfactory (P = 0.002) and in cases of verbal violence (P < 0.001). Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has caused psychological distress in all the communities and through all ages. Some people seemed to be less affected and to be resilient because of a dynamic interaction between individual, relational and environmental factors. Objectives We aim on this present study to evaluate the resilience and factors associated with it among a representative sample of Tunisian adolescents during the COVID19 pandemic. Methods We conducted a cross sectional, descriptive and analytic study among Tunisian adolescents enrolled in secondary schools, in the Hamma region of the city of Gabes during the period extending from 5 March to 26 May 2021. Students were asked to complete a pre-established questionnaire, which contains questions about socio demographic features, medical history and knowledge about the pandemic of covid-19. The Child and Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM-28) was used to evaluate the global resilience and resources contributing to it. The CYRM-28 contains three resources including individual, relationship with primary caregivers and contextual factors. Higher scores reflect higher levels of factors associated with resilience. Results A total of 326 adolescents aged between 14 and 18 years old participated on this study (mean age 16.65 years 1). There were 92 boys and 234 girls. In our sample, 4% of adolescents were infected by the Covid-19. The infection of a family member by this virus was noted in 27.3 % of cases. Adolescents were exposed to the death of a family member by Covid-19 in 22.4% of cases. The Global CYRM28 score was 105 ± 22.39. We found that adolescents who had loosen a family member because of the COVID infection, were less resilient than others (100 vs 107; p=0.023). Adolescents with a moderate to low socioeconomic level were less resilient especially with regard to contextual resilience (35, 57 vs 37, 83; p= 0.019). On the other hand, adolescents keeping means of leisure during this epidemic were significantly more resilient especially in the personal resources (p = 0.024). Conclusions Our findings conclude to some individual, relational and contextual factors that contribute or alters the process of resilience. Recognizing the strengths and capacities of adolescents would allow the development of programs and resources that can help these young people develop resilience skills. BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy has been linked to sudden stillbirth. The suddenness of the stillbirths in these cases have led clinicians to suspect that the pathogenesis of stillbirth in women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy is not related to asphyxia but rather to an undefined etiology. One leading hypothesis relates certain bile acid metabolites to myocardial injury. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether cord blood troponin I levels are increased in fetuses born to mothers with a diagnosis of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, case-control study was performed at a single institution between 2017 to 2019 in which 87 pregnant patients with a diagnosis of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (total bile acids ≥10 μmol/L) were enrolled as cases and 122 randomly selected pregnant patients (asymptomatic with intrapartum total bile acids 0.04 ng/mL were considered positive. The primary outcome was the presence of elevated troponin levels in both cases and controls as a surrogate marker for cardiac status. Our secondary outcomes included neonatal intensive care unit stay, low Apgar scores, neonatal acidosis, and hypoxia indicated by cord blood pH and base excess levels at the time of birth. Chi square and t tests were performed to compare social and obstetrical variables. A P value of 100 μmol/L was performed to assess the relationship between the different severities of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (by risk of fetal demise with those with total bile acids of >100 μmol/L considered at greatest risk) and the likelihood of a positive troponin I result. Finally, a logistic regression analysis was performed to determine if levels of ≥10 μmol/L were associated with elevated troponin levels. RESULTS: The mean gestational age at delivery was 38.96±1.47 and 37.71±1.59 weeks of gestation in the controls and cases respectively (P100 μmol/L, we found a positive correlation between higher total bile acids levels and a positive troponin I test (P=.002). When controlling for gestational age at delivery, maternal age, and body mass index, higher total bile acids levels were associated with a positive troponin I level (adjusted odds ratio, 1.015; 95% confidence interval, 1.004–1.026). CONCLUSION: Elevated troponin I was more likely to be found in patients with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy than in those without intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. When stratified by total bile acids levels, a positive troponin I level was more likely to be found with higher levels of total bile acids. In addition, as total bile acids levels increased, they were more likely to be associated with a positive troponin I level. Although there were no stillbirths in our cohort, our findings suggest a potential relationship between cardiac injury and high levels of total bile acids demonstrated by the presence of elevated troponin I levels in cord blood at the time of birth.

Considering possible impediments to authentic interactions with machines, this study explores contributors to robophobia from the potential dual influence of technological features and individual traits. Through a 2 x 2 x 3 online experiment, a robot’s physical human-likeness, gender, and status were manipulated and individual differences in robot beliefs and personality traits were measured. The effects of robot traits on phobia were non-significant. Overall, subjective beliefs about what robots are, cultivated by media portrayals, whether they threaten human identity, are moral, and have agency were the strongest predictors of robophobia. Those with higher internal locus of control and neuroticism, and lower perceived technology competence, showed more robophobia. Implications for the socio-technical aspects of robots’ integration in work and society are discussed.

There is a growing body of public health research documenting how characteristics of neighborhoods are associated with differences in the health status of residents. However, little is known about how the spatial resolution of neighborhood observational data or community audits affects the identification of neighborhood differences in health. We developed a systematic neighborhood observation instrument for collecting data at very high spatial resolution (we observe each parcel independently) and used it to collect data in a low-income minority neighborhood in Dallas, TX. In addition, we collected data on the health status of individuals residing in this neighborhood. We then assessed the inter-rater reliability of the instrument and compared the costs and benefits of using data at this high spatial resolution. Our instrument provides a reliable and cost-effect method for collecting neighborhood observational data at high spatial resolution, which then allows researchers to explore the impact of varying geographic aggregations. Furthermore, these data facilitate a demonstration of the predictive accuracy of self-reported health status. We find that ordered logit models of health status using observational data at different spatial resolution produce different results. This implies a need to analyze the variation in correlative relationships at different geographic resolutions when there is no solid theoretical rational for choosing a particular resolution. We argue that neighborhood data at high spatial resolution greatly facilitates the evaluation of alternative geographic specifications in studies of neighborhood and health.

A phase I trial (NCT03447314; 204686) evaluated the safety and efficacy of GSK1795091, a Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) agonist, in combination with immunotherapy (GSK3174998 [anti-OX40 monoclonal antibody], GSK3359609 [anti-ICOS monoclonal antibody], or pembrolizumab) in patients with solid tumors. The primary endpoint was safety; other endpoints included efficacy, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics (PD). Manufacturing of GSK1795091 formulation was modified during the trial to streamline production and administration, resulting in reduced PD (cytokine) activity. Fifty-four patients received GSK1795091 with a combination partner; 32 received only the modified GSK1795091 formulation, 15 received only the original formulation, and seven switched mid-study from the original to the modified formulation. Despite the modified formulation demonstrating higher systemic GSK1795091 exposure compared with the original formulation, the transient, dose-dependent elevations in cytokine and chemokine concentrations were no longer observed (e.g., IP-10, IL10, IL1-RA). Most patients (51/54; 94%) experienced ≥1 treatment-emergent adverse event (TEAE) during the study. Safety profiles were similar between formulations, but a higher incidence of TEAEs associated with immune responses (chills, fatigue, pyrexia, nausea, and vomiting) were observed with the original formulation. No conclusions can be made regarding GSK1795091 anti-tumor activity due to the limited data collected. Manufacturing changes were hypothesized to have caused the change in biological activity in this study. Structural characterization revealed GSK1795091 aggregate size in the modified formulation to be twice that in the original formulation, suggesting a negative correlation between GSK1795091 aggregate size and PD activity. Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate and compare three commonly used proportions that include the golden proportion, golden percentage, and Recurring Esthetic Dental (RED) proportion to identify which of the mathematical formulas, if any, can be used to provide predictable and repeatable esthetic clinical outcomes., Methods: A comprehensive search of electronic databases that included EBSCO, ProQuest, SCOPUS, Science Direct, Wiley, Google Scholar and PubMed was conducted using the terms: "golden proportion," "golden percentage," and "Recurring Esthetic Dental (RED) proportions" alone or in concurrence with one or both ensuing terms: "tooth proportions" and "esthetic tooth proportions." In addition, the following journals were hand searched for relevant articles: Journal of Prosthodontics, Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry. Related citations were also considered., Results: Tooth proportions varied substantially in the natural dentition. No studies revealed findings that supported the use of one mathematical formula to predict esthetic success. The golden proportion is present between the central to lateral incisor in some cases, but rarely between the lateral incisor and the canine. When compared to the other proportions, the golden percentage provided better starting points for tooth shape and size, but only when values were adjusted to consider other factors such as ethnicity and/or facial proportions., Conclusion: Mathematical formulas did not provide consistent results that would allow for their use as a standardized guide for esthetically pleasing smiles. Although the golden percentage may be a good starting point if the percentages are adjusted on a case-by-case basis, generalized esthetic ideals cannot be determined by a mathematical formula and are open to interpretation by both the clinician and the patient., (© 2021 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)

Low-molecular-weight gelators are interesting small molecules with potential applications as advanced materials. Carbohydrate-based small molecular gelators are especially useful because they are derived from renewable resources and are more likely to be biocompatible and biodegradable. Various 4,6-benzylidene acetal protected α-methyl 2-d-glucosamine derivatives have been found to be effective low-molecular-weight gelators. To understand the influence of the 4,6-benzylidene acetal functional group toward molecular self-assembly and to obtain effective molecular gelators, we synthesized and analyzed a new series of d-glucosamine derivatives in which the phenyl group of the acetal is replaced by a benzyl group. The homologation of the acetal protection from aromatic to aliphatic functional groups allows us to probe the effect of increasing structural flexibility on molecular self-assembly and gelation. In this study, nine representative amides and nine urea analogs were synthesized, and their gelation properties were analyzed in a series of organic solvents and aqueous solutions. The resulting amide and urea derivatives are versatile organogelators forming gels in toluene, ethanol, isopropanol, ethylene glycol, and aqueous mixtures of organic solvents. More interestingly, the amide analogs are also effective gelators for pump oil and engine oil. NMR spectroscopy at variable temperatures was used to analyze the molecular assemblies and intermolecular forces. The selected gelators with several drug and dye molecules in DMSO and water were studied for their effectiveness of encapsulation and release of these agents.

Background: Patients with symptoms that impersonate a stroke but are later found to have an alternate diagnosis are termed stroke mimics. Stroke mimics treated with intravenous (IV) tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) are exposed to hemorrhagic complications without benefit. The objective of this study is to describe the characteristics, safety, and outcomes of stroke mimic patients treated with t-PA within 4.5 hours., Methods: All patients hospitalized after IV t-PA treatment at a tertiary care hospital and primary stroke center from January 2008 through December 2011 were reviewed. Stroke mimics were determined by review of clinical and imaging findings. Stroke mimics are described and compared with acute ischemic stroke patients for demographics, clinical characteristics, and bleeding complications., Results: We identified 38 stroke mimic (12%) and 285 ischemic stroke (88%) t-PA-treated patients. Compared with ischemic stroke patients, mimic patients were younger, more often female, and reported a history of stroke more often. There were no differences in race, baseline stroke scale, or onset to treatment time. There were no intracerebral hemorrhages or deaths in the mimic patients but there were 2 systemic hemorrhages (5.2%)., Conclusions: Treatment of mimic patients with IV t-PA appears to be safe in this cohort. Concern for intracerebral hemorrhage in mimic patients need not dissuade clinicians from administering t-PA when significant concern for ischemic etiology exists., (Copyright © 2015 National Stroke Association. Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the amount of medication adsorbed into extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) circuits with a polymethylpentane membrane oxygenator and heparin-coated polyvinyl chloride tubing., Methods: An ECMO circuit with the aforementioned components was set up ex vivo and primed with expired blood. Midazolam, lorazepam, morphine, and fentanyl were administered to the circuit. Fifteen minutes after medication administration, 60 mL of blood were removed and stored in a 60-mL syringe to serve as a control. Medication levels were drawn from the ECMO circuit (test) and control syringe (control) 15 minutes, 24 hours, and 48 hours after the medications were administered. ECMO circuit medication levels were compared to their corresponding syringe control medication levels. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the percentage of medication remaining in the blood and compare it to the control value., Results: Except for morphine, there was a large decline in medication levels over the 48-hour period. Compared to control values, 17.2% of midazolam, 41.3% of lorazepam, 32.6% of fentanyl, and 102% of morphine remained in the ECMO circuit., Conclusion: Despite the use of newer components in ECMO circuits, a large quantity of medication is adsorbed into the ECMO circuit. Midazolam, lorazepam, and fentanyl all showed reductions in medication levels greater than 50%. Morphine may have advantages for patients on ECMO, as its concentration does not appear to be affected.

Purpose: Clevidipine is a novel, ultra-short acting dihydropyridine. We hypothesized that clevidipine would rapidly control elevated blood pressure (BP) in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)., Materials and Methods: This prospective open-label pilot study evaluated the efficacy and safety of clevidipine in reducing blood pressure (BP) to a pre-specified range and within 30 min before or after clipping or coiling of the aneurysm., Results: We enrolled five patients who received eight clevidipine infusions, including 1587 systolic or diastolic BP data points. The mean SBP upper and lower goals were set at 154 and 122 mmHg. The primary end point of achieving SBP control within <30 min was reached in all patients within 14.2 ± 6.4 min at an infusion rate of 10.8 ± 9.1 mg/h. The mean pre-infusion, during infusion and post-infusion SBP measurements were 165.5 ± 2.55, 146.4 ± 2.48 and 159.3 ± 11.5 mmHg ( p < 0.05 for pre- vs infusion comparison), respectively. After reaching the primary end point and during the clevidipine infusion, 17.5% and 11.8% of SBP readings were above the upper and below the lower goals, respectively. No patients re-bled. In one patient, the infusion had to be stopped temporarily three times due to SBP decrease below the lower goal., Conclusion: Clevidipine controlled SBP in all patients with aneurysmal SAH in <22 min and kept it within the elective range 70% of the time without major complications.

Sclerosing cholangitis is usually diagnosed by clinical findings coupled with radiographic imaging of the bile ducts by ERCP. Direct imaging of both the intra- and extrahepatic biliary tree provides an opportunity to further study this disorder and its potential complications such as biliary malignancy. However, endoscopic visualization of the intrahepatic bile ducts in sclerosing cholangitis is potentially limited by the size of available cholangioscopes and the presence of strictures. Below, we report our initial results using a 0.8-mm fiberoptic endoscope placed through a partially steerable 1.8-mm guide catheter. The system allows visualization of the intrahepatic biliary tree beyond areas of stricture in the more distal ducts.

A developmental alternative splicing switch, involving exon 16 of protein 4.1 pre-mRNA, occurs during mammalian erythropoiesis. By controlling expression of a 21-amino acid peptide required for high-affinity interaction of protein 4.1 with spectrin and actin, this switch helps to regulate erythrocyte membrane mechanical stability. Here we show that key aspects of protein 4.1 structure and function are conserved in nucleated erythroid cells of the amphibian Xenopus laevis. Analysis of protein 4.1 cDNA sequences cloned from Xenopus erythrocytes and oocytes showed that tissue-specific alternative splicing of exon 16 also occurs in frogs. Importantly, functional studies with recombinant Xenopus erythroid 4.1 demonstrated specific binding to and mechanical stabilization of 4.1-deficient human erythrocyte membranes. Phylogenetic sequence comparison showed two evolutionarily conserved peptides that represent candidate spectrin-actin binding sites. Finally, in situ hybridization of early embryos showed high expression of 4.1 mRNA in ventral blood islands and in developing brain structures. These results demonstrate that regulated expression of structurally and functionally distinct protein 4.1 isoforms, mediated by tissue-specific alternative splicing, has been highly evolutionarily conserved. Moreover, both nucleated amphibian erythrocytes and their enucleated mammalian counterparts express 4.1 isoforms functionally competent for spectrin-actin binding.

By applying a utility (usefulness) scale termed the "Feeling Thermometer" to 111 edentulous patients, a measure of effectiveness (quality-adjusted prosthesis years) that can be compared across several treatment strategies was developed. The results suggest that the utility scale was a valid (known group, P < .05), reliable (intraclass correlation coefficient = .713) measure of patients' preferences for the three treatment strategies: (1) conventional complete dentures (controls, n = 77), (2) transosteal implant-supported prostheses (n = 19), and (3) endosseous implant-supported prostheses (n = 15). The implant-treated patients rated their prostheses as high or higher (Feeling Thermometer score of 86.3 [endosseous] and 82.3 [transosteal]) than a functional fitting, esthetic conventional denture (score of 85.0 [endosseous] and 82.0 [transosteal]). They were also younger, more educated, and had received more sets of dentures (P < .05) than conventional denture patients.
