Abstract Polymer nanowire (NW) organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) integrated on highly aligned large-area flexible substrates are candidate structures for the development of high-performance flexible electronics. This work presents a universal technique, coaxial focused electrohydrodynamic jet (CFEJ) printing technology, to fabricate highly aligned 90-nm-diameter polymer arrays. This method allows for the preparation of uniformly shaped and precisely positioned nanowires directly on flexible substrates without transfer, thus ensuring their electrical properties. Using indacenodithiophene-co-benzothiadiazole (IDT-BT) and poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8-BT) as example materials, 5 cm2 arrays were prepared with only minute size variations, which is extremely difficult to do using previously reported methods. According to 2D-GIXRD analysis, the molecules inside the nanowires mainly adopted face-on π-stacking crystallite arrangements. This is quite different from the mixed arrangement of thin films. Nanowire-based OFETs exhibited a high average hole mobility of 1.1 cm2 V−1 s−1 and good device uniformity, indicating the applicability of CFEJ printing as a potential batch manufacturing and integration process for high-performance, scalable polymer nanowire-based OFET circuits. This technique can be used to fabricate various polymer arrays, enabling the use of organic polymer semiconductors in large-area, high-performance electronic devices and providing a new path for the fabrication of flexible displays and wearable electronics in the future.

Here, the authors fabricate large area and highly aligned polymer semiconductor sub-microwires arrays via coaxial focused electrohydrodynamic jet printing technology, achieving high on/off ratio and average mobility that is 5x higher than that of thin film based organic field effect transistors.

To increase the printing stability of low-viscosity solutions, an auxiliary method was proposed using a coaxial electrohydrodynamic jet. A high-viscosity solution was employed as the outer layer in the printing process, and it could be removed (dissolved away) after printing the structures. A combination of mechanical and electrical forces was proposed to enhance the consistency, durability, and alignment of the printed versatile structures. The instability of the jet trajectory (which arose from the repulsion between the jet and the base with a residual charge, in addition to the winding effect of the solution) was also reduced using the drag force along the direction of movement. Moreover, the jet velocity, the surface charge, and the influence of various working voltages on the jet speed were simulated. An array of IDT-BT nanostructures measuring about 100 nm was prepared on silicon dioxide (using an inner needle with a diameter of 130 µm) by equating the moving speed (350 mm/s) of the substrate to the speed of the jet. Moreover, the moving speed (350 mm/s) of the substrate was compared exclusively to the speed of the jet. The method proposed throughout this study can provide a reference for enhancing the stability of low-viscosity solutions on substrates for high-efficiency fabrication devices (NEMS/MEMS).

Abstract Coaxial electrohydrodynamic jet (CE-Jet) printing is an encouraging method for fabrication of high-resolution micro and nanostructures in MEMS systems. This paper presents a novel simulation work based on phase field method which is considered as a precise technique in fluid dynamics. The study explores influence of various parameters such as applied voltage, needle-substrate distance, dynamic viscosity, relative permittivity, needle size and flow rate on stability and resolution of CE-Jet morphologies. The morphology of CE-Jet exhibits that width of cone-jet profile and printed structures on substrate were directly proportional to relative permittivity and flow rate. In addition, it was inversely proportional to dynamic viscosity and applied voltage. The study examine that CE-Jet length of inner liquid is inversely proportional to needle-substrate distance in same time. It was later verified in experimental study by producing stable CE-Jet morphology with 300 μm diameter using optimized parameters (i.e., DC voltage 7.0 kV and inner liquid flow rate 400 nl/min) as compared to other validation studies such as 400 μm and 500 μm. The CE-Jet printing technique investigates significant changes in consistency and stability of CE-Jet morphologies and makes Jet unique and comparable when adjustment accuracy reaches 0.01 mm. PZT sol line structures with a diameter of 1 µm were printed directly on substrate using inner needle (diameter of 120 µm). Therefore, it is considered as a powerful tool for nano constructs production in M/NEMS devices.

This paper presents the concrete design of nanowires under the precise size and morphology that play a crucial role in the practical operation of the micro/nano devices. A straightforward and operative method termed as nib-assistance coaxial electrohydrodynamic (CEHD) printing technology was proposed. It extracts the essence of a nib-assistance electric field intensity to enhance and lessen the internal fluid reflux of the CEHD jet. The experiments were performed to add microparticles into the inner liquid to indicate the liquid flow consistency within the coaxial jet. The reflux in the coaxial jet was observed for the first time in experiments. The nanowires with a minimum size of 70 nm were printed under optimum experimental conditions. The nanopatterns contained aligned nanowires structures with diameters much smaller than the inner diameter of nozzle, relying on the coaxial nib-assisted technique. The printed results revealed that the nib-assisted CEHD printing technique offers a certain level high quality for application of NEMS system.

Electrohydrodynamic jet (e-jet) printing is a modern and decent fabrication method widely used to print high-resolution versatile microstructures with features down to 10 μm. It is currently difficult to break nanoscale resolution (f = 8.6 × 10−10 m3s−1, Vn = 9.0 kV, and Vs = 4.5 kV. Subsequently, printing experiments were performed using optimized processing parameters and all similar simulation conditions. Microdroplets smaller than 13 μm were directly printed on PET substrate. The model is considered unique and powerful for printing versatile microstructures on polymeric substrates. The presented method is useful for MEMS technology to fabricate various devices, such as accelerometers, smartphones, gyroscopes, sensors, and actuators.

The fabrication of various micro-patterns on polymer insulating substrates is a current requirement in micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) and packaging sectors. In this paper, we use electrohydrodynamic jet (E-Jet) printing to create multifaceted and stable micro-patterns on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. Initially, simulation was performed to investigate optimized printing settings in phase field physics for the usage of two distinct functional inks. A series of simulation experiments was conducted, and it was determined that the following parameters are optimised: applied pressure of 40 kPa, high pulse voltage of 1.95 kV, low dc voltage of 1.60 kV, duty cycle of 80%, pulse frequency of 60 Hz, printing height of 0.25 mm, and printing speed of 1 mm/s. Then, experiments showed that adjusting a pressure value of 40 kPa and regulating the SEMICOSIL988/1 K ink to print micro-drops on a polymer substrate with a thickness of 1 mm prevents coffee staining. The smallest measured droplet size was 200 μm. Furthermore, underfill (UF 3808) ink was driven with applied pressure to 50 kPa while other parameters were left constant, and the minimum size of linear patterns was printed to 105 μm on 0.5-mm-thick PET substrate. During the micro-drip and cone-jet regimes, the consistency and diameter of printed micro-structures were accurately regulated at a pulse frequency of 60 Hz and a duty cycle of 80%.

Tinospora sagittata is a perennial vine of the family Menispermaceae and distributed in Hunan, Hubei, Guangxi, and Sichuan province of P. R. China. It has been used in Chinese traditional medicine for centuries. The chloroplast (cp) genome of T. sagittata, characterized using Illumina technology, is 163,662 bp in size. There are a total of 130 genes, coding for 85 proteins, 37 tRNAs, and 8 rRNAs. Phylogenetic relationship analysis based on 16 complete cp genome sequences exhibited that T. sagittata was phylogenetically closer to Menispermum dauricum and Stephania japonica.

This paper proposes a novel way of preparing a PZT thick film micro vibrator using the electrohydrodynamic jet (E-Jet) printing technique. Initially, a micro piezoelectric vibrator was simulated and designed for obtaining optimized structure, which has a total thickness of less than 600 µm. Subsequently, the PZT thick film element was directly printed on the elastic body using the E-Jet printing. This method avoids the glue fabrication process involved in the bulk piezoelectric fabrication, thus avoiding the limits of voltage drops, isolating and absorbing amplitude usually occurred in the vibrator having glue interface. It was observed that B02 and B03 modes were generated at frequencies of 29.74 and 79.14 kHz, respectively, and the amplitudes of B02 and B03 modes were 406 and 176 nm, respectively. The error between the simulation and test result in the B03 modal is only 0.35%, which indicates the accuracy of the simulation analysis and the fabrication process. The PZT thick film traveling-wave micro vibrator successfully realized bidirectional rotation of a rotor, with a maximum speed of 681 rpm, which also shows a linear relationship between excitation voltage and rotary speed. This paper provides an effective method for preparing a micro piezoelectric vibrator for MEMS ultrasonic devices, which simplifies the manufacturing process and enhances the performance of the piezoelectric vibrator.

Liparis nervosa is a plant of the family Orchidaceae and mainly distributed in subtropical and tropical regions of the world. In Chinese traditional medicine, it has been used for the treatment of hemostasis, carbuncle, and furuncle for centuries. The chloroplast (cp) genome of L. nervosa, sequenced based on next-generation platform (NEOSAT), is 157,274 bp in size. The cp genome encodes 130 genes, including eight rRNA genes, 85 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and 37 tRNA genes. Phylogenetic relationship analysis based on complete cp genome sequences exhibited that both of L. nervosa and L. loeselii were phylogenetically closer to Dendrobium officinale.

Paris polyphylla var. chinensis is a species of flowering herb of the family Liliaceae and widely distributed in 12 provinces in China. It has been used in Chinese traditional medicine for centuries. The chloroplast (cp) genome of P. polyphylla var. chinensis, sequenced based on next-generation platform (NEOSAT), is 164,429 bp in size. The cp genome encodes 133 genes, including eight rRNA genes, 87 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and 38 tRNA genes. Phylogenetic relationship analysis based on complete cp genome sequences exhibited that P. polyphylla var. chinensis was most related to Daiswa forrestii.

Phosphorus (P) is a necessary nutrient for plant growth and plays an important role in plant metabolisms; however, the majority of P in soil is in insoluble forms. Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can convert the insoluble phosphates into plant-available forms and may have the potential for use in sustainable agricultural practices. This study examined the effects of two native PSB, namely Bacillus aryabhattai (JX285) and Pseudomonas auricularis (HN038), and a mixture of both strains (1:1) on the growth of Camellia oleifera Abel. seedlings. The results showed a significant promotion of the growth of C. oleifera plants by three inoculation treatments. All the PSB inoculation treatments could improve the leaf nitrogen (N) and P content and had positive effects on the available N, P, and potassium (K) content of rhizosphere soil. A co-inoculation of the two native PSB strains caused a synergistic effect and achieved the best benefit. In conclusion, B. aryabhattai and P. auricularis could be used as biological agents instead of chemical fertilizers for agricultural production to reduce environmental pollution and increase the yield of tea oil.

Endophytes are important components of forest ecosystems, and have potential use in the development of medical drugs and the conservation of wild medicinal plants. This study aimed to examine the diversity and antimicrobial activities of endophytic fungi from a medicinal plant, Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers. The results showed that a total of 970 isolates were obtained from root, stem, leaf, and fruit segments of L. cubeba. All the fungal endophytes belonged to the phylum Ascomycota and could be classified into three taxonomic classes, nine orders, twelve families, and seventeen genera. SF15 (Colletotrichum boninense) was the dominant species in L. cubeba. Leaves harbored a greater number of fungal endophytes but lower diversity, while roots harbored the maximum species diversity of endophytic fungi. For the antimicrobial activities, seventeen isolates could inhibit the growth of plant pathogenic fungi, while the extracts of six endophytes showed antimicrobial activity to all the tested pathogenic fungi. Among these endophytes, SF22 (Chaetomium globosum) and SF14 (Penicillium minioluteum) were particularly effective in inhibiting seven plant pathogenic fungi growths and could be further explored for their potential use in biotechnology, medicine, and agriculture.

A longitudinal force loading instrument for rails was developed to simulate the longitudinal temperature force of the rail of a ballastless track under different rail temperatures. The instrument comprised the rail, an end-fixing device, a temperature force application device, and concrete foundation. This instrument could simulate the longitudinal stress distribution of the rail under different rail temperature changes and analyze the correlation between the natural frequencies of the rail and the longitudinal stress generated by temperature variation. The result of the longitudinal stress distribution exhibits good agreement with the simulation results. In addition, the result of the dynamic characteristics of the rail demonstrates good agreement with the former conclusions. This experimental instrument can be potentially developed into a powerful tool for researching the rail features of a ballastless track under different temperature forces.

Clogging of anode flow channels by CO2 bubbles is a vital problem for further performance improvements of the micro direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC). In this paper, a new type anode structure usingthe concept of the non-equipotent serpentine flow field (NESFF) to solve this problem was designed, fabricated and tested. Experiments comparing the μDMFC with and without this type of anode flow field were implemented using a home-made test loop. Results show that the mean-value, amplitude and frequency of the inlet-to-outlet pressure drops in the NESFF is far lower than that in the traditional flow fields at high μDMFC output current. Furthermore, the sequential images of the CO2 bubbles as well as the μDMFC performance with different anode flow field pattern were also investigated, and the conclusions are in accordance with those derived from the pressure drop experiments. Results of this study indicate that the non-equipotent design of the µDMFC anode flow field can effectively mitigate the CO2 clogging in the flow channels, and hence lead to a significant promotion of the μDMFC performance.

Dense and crack-free barium titanate (BaTiO3, BTO) thin films with a thickness of less than 4 μm were prepared by using sub-micrometric scale, layer-by-layer electrohydrodynamic jet (E-jet) deposition of the suspension ink which is composed of BTO nanopowder and BTO sol. Impacts of the jet height and line-to-line pitch of the deposition on the micro-structure of BTO thin films were investigated. Results show that crack-free BTO thin films can be prepared with 4 mm jet height and 300 μm line-to-line pitch in this work. Dielectric constant of the prepared BTO thin film was recorded as high as 2940 at 1 kHz at room temperature. Meanwhile, low dissipation factor of the BTO thin film of about 8.6% at 1 kHz was also obtained. The layer-by-layer E-jet deposition technique developed in this work has been proved to be a cost-effective, flexible and easy to control approach for the preparation of high-quality solid thin film.

An effective approach is required to pattern graphene with high spatial resolution and accuracy for advanced graphene-based sensors. In this work, we describe a simple and effective strategy for direct writing micro-scale graphene patterns by drop-ondemand (DoD) electrohydrodynamic jet (E-Jet) printing, using a highly concentrated graphene dispersion. The uniform micro-scale graphene patterns were formed by droplets produced under the electric field "pulling" force, these droplets are far smaller than the inner diameter of nozzle, which can effectively avoid nozzle clogging. With the control of pulse voltage width and frequency, different micro-scale graphene patterns were directly printed using DoD E-Jet printing technique. Graphene lines with a thickness of 5 nm were produced for 1 time printing, which provided a resistivity of 4.2 mO·cm. In addition, the graphene layer was directly written on the Pt microelectrodes to form Graphene/Pt (G/Pt) composite microelectrodes. The electrochemical test shows that the peak current of G/Pt composite microelectrodes was more than twice larger than that of bare Pt microelectrodes. The dynamic strain and vibration acceleration are two key parameters in the monitoring of vibrations that can damage track and affect the safety of railway traffic. This paper presents a remote measurement system for the online monitoring of train-induced vibration responses in rail tracks. A precision data acquisition node is designed for the conditioning and monitoring of the vibration signals generated by trains traveling at full speed. The monitored data is remotely acquired using a wireless sensor network. Furthermore, the use of solar power significantly increases the long-term service life of the system. The system is validated using both laboratory tests and a field deployment over a period of several months on an in-service high-speed railway. The obtained results indicate that the remote measurement system can accurately collect dynamic strain and vibration acceleration signals in a rail; these signals can be processed and analyzed to allow timely maintenance actions. A three-dimensional ballastless track model was established using a finite element method to simulate the rail condition before and after rail break. The distribution of the rail longitudinal stress was analyzed under certain thermal stress. In addition, experiments were also conducted in order to validate the simulation results using rail longitudinal stress test equipment. It was found that the simulation results agreed reasonably well with the experimental results. The tests show that the simulation results could correctly predict the longitudinal stress distribution in the rail. Finally, rail longitudinal stress distributions under different thermal stress were calculated using this model; this is helpful for future application to determine when and where there may be a rail break. In this reported work, a graphene suspension was atomised and deposited using the electrohydrodynamic atomisation technique, enabling the formation of a wide range of graphene thin films. The influences of the atomisation-substrate distance on the characteristics of the graphene films and their sheet resistances were analysed. A distance of 3 mm was found to be the optimum deposition distance for this graphene suspension to produce an even film and a low sheet resistance. At a lower and a higher working distance the graphene films exhibited a sharp-angled heave surface behaviour and a high sheet resistance. In addition, electrohydrodynamic atomisation combined with a photolithography polymeric micromoulding technique was used to form graphene structures. After removing the photoresist micromould, the graphene structures remained under well-arranged characteristics. After two layers of electrohydrodynamic atomisation deposition at a working distance of 3 mm, the thickness of the film was ~400 nm and exhibited a sheet resistance of 127.5 Q s q-1 (ohms per square). Sintered type silver ink has been widely applied in photovoltaics and piezoceramics due to its unique electrical and mechanical properties. This study presents a high temperature-assisted electrohydrodynamic jet (HTAEJ) printing technique for direct printing high aspect ratio micro-scale silver structures using sintered type silver ink. It makes use of an external electrical field force to form a focused jet to produce fine features using a large sized nozzle. During the printing process, a certain temperature is necessary to accelerate evaporation of the solvent in the just printed structure, to hold its original printed feature. It was found that a high temperature of 200 °C generated by a heating substrate can help to produce fine silver structures using the electrohydrodynamic jet printing technique. A sintered type nano silver ink was prepared for HTAEJ printing. Unique equipment with a heating platform and a cooling fixture was designed and produced for HTAEJ printing of sintered type silver ink. Besides, the printing parameters of temperature, electric field strength and motion speed have been investigated to achieve a stable jet and desired printed silver structures. It was demonstrated that the HTAEJ printed silver structure has a width of 50 μm, an aspect ratio of 0.4 and a resistivity of 6.5 μΩ cm. Furthermore, 3D silver micro-pillars with a diameter of 20 μm and height of 80–120 μm were produced using the HTAEJ printing technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports the use of electrohydrodynamic jet (E-jet) printing technique for producing a wide range of graphene micro-scale structures. Ethyl cellulose-dispersed graphene ink and Nafion-dispersed graphene ink were prepared and used for E-Jet printing. A glass slide and PDMS substrate were used for E-Jet printing of graphene ink. The E-jet printed graphene micro-scale structures using ethyl cellulose-dispersed graphene ink presented a feature of center arrayed graphene surrounded by the track of evaporated solution. However, the E-Jet printed graphene structures using Nafion-dispersed graphene ink exhibited uniform arranged features. It was observed that the resistivity of the graphene structures printed from the ethyl cellulose-dispersed graphene ink was much lower than that from the Nafion-dispersed graphene ink. In addition, the graphene micro-scale electrodes were E-Jet printed for preliminary electrochemical applications. The results showed that the graphene micro-scale electrodes had a distinct response for the lead ion. Furthermore, a Pt/graphene composite electrode was formed and an electrochemistry test was conducted. It was found that the Pt /graphene composite electrode had a more sensitive response compared with the pure Pt electrode for electrochemical sensing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dual-tree quaternion wavelet transform (QWT) was used in conjunction with quaternion-based three-channel joint transmissibility (QTJT) for state inspection. Multiple QTJTs from the same structural state were used to construct a state matrix, which was considered as a feature image. Then QWT coefficients of the feature image were calculated. It supported one magnitude and three phases, in particular, the low-frequency magnitude-phase was set as state feature index. Ultimately, the difference of the state feature indexes were utilized as the state indicator. This method reduced the influence on state inspection caused by measurement uncertainty of single testing sample, because it took overall consideration of multiple testing samples and described the similarity from multiple directions. The availability of suggested method was demonstrated by a real experiment, in which the state changing was realized by loosening fasteners and altering the longitudinal force of rail. This method was also compared with method based on Karhunen-Loeve Transform (K-LT) and artificial neural network (ANN). Experimental result indicated that the suggested method was integrated optimal, moreover, the resolution of the longitudinal force of rail was less than 10 MPa which was equivalent to temperature change of 1.75 °C for full-lock rail. This paper presented the use of quaternion-based three-channel joint transmissibility (QTJT) in structural state detection. During the detection process, the time-domain pure quaternion sequences were obtained based on the three dimensional spatial vibration signals from two different testing points. Then QTJTs of the object structure under different states were calculated by discrete quaternion Fourier transform (DQFT). Subsequently, modular vectors of the QTJTs were utilized to construct the state matrix of the object structure and the Karhunen-Loeve Transform (K-LT) was employed to calculate the state feature index vectors. Finally, Euclidean distance between state feature index vectors was obtained, which was considered as the state indicator. An actual experiment was performed on the test platform of ballastless track and the result with 100 percent correct identification was achieved. Combined with the experimental results, the advantages of QTJT comparing to transmissibility based on scalar signals were discussed. The QTJT can be used when the vibration composes from multiple dimensional synchronous vibrations. And more importantly, the QTJT is consistent with its theoretical value in spite of the installation orientation of the sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
