This can lead to serious consequences, even a life-threatening situation. Early diagnosis, treatment and follow-up are essential to minimize critical impacts in patients. Bedside determination of blood potassium is not accessible in all health care centers or in all emergency departments and far less common in this kind of centers in emerging countries. We have therefore proposed a portable, economic and long-lifetime potentiometric point-of-care (POC) analytical microsystem to deal with this question. It is a continuous flow microfluidic platform, made of cyclic olefin copolymer (COC), which combines microfluidics and a detection system based on the potentiometric technique containing a potassium selective electrode with a novel composition of polymeric membrane, which improves lifetime. Its size is smaller than a credit card and shows a linear range of Nernst calibration equation from 1 to 26 mM K+, a detection limit of 0.16 mM K+, a satisfactory repeatability and reproducibility, and an analysis frequency of 20 samples h−1, requiring only 25 μL as sample volume. Moreover, lifetime is as long as 9 months by intensive use. All these features comply with medical requirements. Human serum samples were analyzed with the developed device and the obtained results were compared with those provided by two methods: ICP-OES and another using ion selective electrodes. No significant differences were observed, demonstrating the suitability of the developed POC microanalyzer for bedside health applications.

[EN] Spontaneous resolution of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may stand behind the observed benefit of rapid maxillary expansion (RME), mainly supported by uncontrolled case series. We aimed to review the controlled, ideally randomized, evidence on the effectiveness of RME as compared to watchful waiting or alternative treatment of pediatric OSA. We only found one randomized clinical trial comparing RME with watchful waiting. The other four studies compared RME with the gold-standard treatment adenotonsillectomy, three of them in a non-randomized fashion. The results of the RCT showed no statistically significant differences in the enhancement of main (apnea hypopnea index, AHI) and secondary outcomes between RME and watchful waiting. Furthermore, reproducibility of the published studies was limited by insufficient description of their patients' inclusion criteria. We could not find convincing evidence of the benefit of RME over watchful waiting in patients with pediatric OSA. RCTs with reproducible inclusion criteria comparing RME with watchful waiting are still critically needed to support this intervention for the treatment of pediatric OSA. In the absence of solid evidence with RCT, RME should not be recommended for the treatment of pediatric OSA. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42021249261. Los resultados obtenidos, demuestran que los criterios de diseno utilizados en los anos 50, en algunos casos no cubren el margen de incertidumbre esperado, respaldando asi la necesidad de revisar las grandes presas espanolas actualizando los analisis tal como rezan las Normas Tecnicas de Seguridad de Presas que recientemente ha aprobado el Gobierno. EnglishA simplified method has been developed and applied to reevaluate accurately sliding safety in six gravity and buttresses dams based on the results of numerical linear models. The method has been validated by nonlinear analysis and experimental measurements. Rotary boreholes have been drilled, with core recovery, close to the upstream face, to study the current state of the concrete-rock interface and a possible presence of cracks. Extensometers have been installed and cracks opening data has been analyzed. The results obtained show that the design criteria used in the 1950s, in some cases do not cover the expected margin of uncertainty. The need of reassessmenting of Spanish large dams is supported, updating data as Technical Standards for Dam Safety recently approved by the Government of Spain require.

A microanalyzer prototype for copper(II) ion monitoring in mining industrial processes is presented. The microanalyzer is designed as an assembly of different modules, each module being responsible for a unit operation. In order to optimize the industrial processes, the microanalyzer can automate all sample management, signal processing, and mathematical calculations and wirelessly transfer data to a control room. The determination of copper(II) ion is done using a colorimetric reaction and the microanalyser performs autocalibration by in situ dilution of a stock solution, matching the higher analyte concentration of the working range defined for the sample to be determined, using a multicommutation approach. The performance of the microanalyzer for monitoring copper(II) ion in water effluents of mining facilities was optimized in the working range from 1 to 10 mg/L to match Mexican environmental law regulations, which allow a maximum concentration of 4 mg/L of copper(II) ion in these circumstances.

The design, construction and evaluation of a low-cost cyclic olefin copolymer (COC)-based continuous flow microanalyzer with optical detection to determine the titratable acidity content of wine is here presented. The analysis method is based on the monitoring of the blue coloration decrease of a buffered bromothymol blue (BTB) solution in the presence of the acidic compounds of wine. The microanalyzer monolithically integrates the required microfluidic motifs as well as an optical flow cell where the measurements are performed by using a miniaturized and versatile photometric detection system. Fluid management is totally automated by the use of computer-controlled microvalves, permitting the automatic calibration of the system as well as the automatic sampling, including in-line dilution and analysis. The reduced size of the whole system along with its high simplicity and automation make it suitable for its application to the on-line monitoring of titratable acidity during wine-making processes. With the optimal conditions, a linear range up to 0.50 g L−1 tartaric acid, a quantification limit (LOQ) of 0.01 g L−1 and a detection limit (LOD) of 0.004 g L−1 were obtained, covering the most common acidity content of musts and wines. A sampling rate up to 26 h−1 could be achieved, consuming less than 3 mL of inexpensive reagents per analysis and requiring no pretreatment of the sample. The microsystem has been successfully applied to the quantification of the titratable acidity content of several wine samples, being the results in excellent agreement with the ones obtained by the reference method.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of sperm and seminal plasma (SP) on the freezability of porcine semen. Semen of eight commercial males from two farms in the central-western region of Colombia (four boars in each farm) was frozen and tested to select two males with high freezability (MHF) and two with low freezability (MLF), according to the percentage of functionally competent sperm (FCS). Immediately after the collection was completed, the SP and sperm from the males selected were separated by centrifugation to combine the two types of plasma with the two types of sperm, incubate them for three hours and then freeze them. The variables evaluated were: sperm morphology, structural and functional integrity of plasmatic membrane, progressive and total motility, DNA fragmentation, acrosome integrity, capacitated sperm and FCS. An automated flow analyzer based on low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC), a solid-phase reactor (SPR) and a low-cost photometer was designed for ascorbic acid (AA) determination in pharmaceutical formulations. It consists of a peristaltic pump, three-way solenoid valves, SPR to chemically convert Cu(II) into Cu(I), and a LTCC device for mixing the liberated copper with bathocuproine and detection. The flow cell in the LTCC employed an ultrabright LED — photodiode photometer. The analyzer successfully determined AA in pharmaceutical formulations. The analytical curve from 8.5×10−6 to 7.0×10−4 M gave a detection limit of 7.0×10−7 M and a RSD of 2.1% for a 2.0×10−4 M AA solution (n = 10). A high sampling frequency of 102 h−1 and low reagent and sample consumption (150 µL) resulted.

Bioacoustic of the advertisement call of Ceratophrys cranwelli (Anura: Ceratophryidae). The advertisement call plays an important role in the life history of anuran amphibians, mainly during the breeding season. Call features represent an important character to discriminate species, and sound emissions are very effective to assure or reinforce genetic incompatibility, especially in the case of sibling species. Since frogs are ectotherms, acoustic properties of their calls will vary with temperature. In this study, we described the advertisement call of C. cranwelli, quantifying the temperature effect on its components. The acoustic emissions were recorded during 2007 using a DAT record Sony™ TCD-100 with stereo microphone ECM-MS907 Sony™ and tape TDK™ DAT-RGX 60. As males emit their calls floating in temporary ponds, water temperatures were registered after recording the advertisement calls with a digital thermometer TES 1 300±0.1°C. Altogether, 54 calls from 18 males were analyzed. The temporal variables of each advertisement call were measured using oscillograms and sonograms and the analyses of dominant frequency were performed using a spectrogram. Multiple correlation analysis was used to identify the temperature-dependent acoustic variables and the temperature effect on these variables was quantified using linear regression models. The advertisement call of C. cranwelli consists of a single pulse group. Call duration, Pulse duration and Pulse interval decreased with the temperature, whereas the Pulse rate increased with temperature. The temperature-dependent variables were standardized at 25°C according to the linear regression model obtained. The acoustic variables that were correlated with the temperature are the variables which emissions depend on laryngeal muscles and the temperature constraints the contractile properties of muscles. Our results indicated that temperature explains an important fraction of the variability in some acoustic variables (79% in the Pulse rate), and demonstrated the importance of considering the effect of temperature in acoustic components. The results suggest that acoustic variables show geographic variation to compare data with previous works. El canto de advertencia en anuros es especie-específico, pero como los anfibios son organismos ectotermos, las variables acústicas pueden estar afectadas por la temperatura. Se describe el canto de advertencia de Ceratophrys cranwelli cuantificando el efecto de la temperatura sobre sus componentes. Los cantos se grabaron in situ y se registró la temperatura del sitio de canto. Un total de 54 cantos de 18 individuos fueron digitalizados y analizados. Las variables temporales de cada canto de advertencia fueron medidas a partir de los oscilogramas y sonogramas, mientras que el análisis de frecuencia se realizó a través del espectrograma. Mediante análisis de correlación múltiple se identificaron las variables acústicas temperatura-dependientes y el efecto de la temperatura fue cuantificado mediante los modelos de regresión lineal obtenidos. C. cranwelli posee un canto de advertencia simple pulsado. Las variables Duración del canto, Duración del pulso e Intervalo entre pulso decrecen con la temperatura, en tanto que la Tasa de pulsos está directamente correlacionada con la temperatura. Las variables temperaturadependientes fueron estandarizadas a 25ºC según el modelo de regresión lineal obtenido para ser comparadas con datos publicados. Se demuestra la importante variabilidad que produce la temperatura en algunas propiedades del canto de C. cranwelli.

Proceeding of: 2013 Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference Proceedings (APMC), Seoul, Korea (South), 5-8 Nov. 2013 A novel design combining standard microstrip technology with single ring resonator and high dielectric constant resonator for design of low and band pass filtering electromagnetic band gap(EBG) structures, operating in the range from 1 to 20 GHz is presented in this paper. The design is based on a high dielectric constant resonator embedded in a microstrip structure substrate. The dielectric resonator is fabricated by using commercial high dielectric constant EPOXY paste in a process compatible with serigraphy and screen printing technology. In this work, an analytical microsystem based on LTCC (low-temperature co-fired ceramic) technology with monolithic incorporation of an optical flow cell for determination of dipyrone in pharmaceuticals is described. The detection system is based on the formation of a blue chromophore between dipyrone and Fe(III) photometrically monitored at 630 nm using a lab-made LED mini-photometer constructed with a light emitting diode as a radiation source and a Si photodiode as a detector. The lab-made mini-photometer elaborated presented a good performance in regard to high signal/noise ratio, low drift and good sensitivity. The analytical curve was linear in the dipyrone concentration range from 1.0 × 10-4 to 3.5 × 10-3 mol L-1, limit of detection of 4.5 × 10-5 mol L-1 and total time of analyses of 20 s yielding an analytical frequency of 195 h-1 with a low waste generation per analysis (480 µL). Neste trabalho, a aplicação de um microssistema analítico construído com tecnologia LTCC (cerâmica cossinterizada a baixa temperatura) com incorporação monolítica de uma cela óptica de fluxo para determinação de dipirona em formulações farmacêuticas é descrita. O sistema de detecção baseou-se na formação de um cromóforo azul entre a dipirona e Fe(III) monitorado fotometricamente em 630 nm usando um minifotômetro de LED lab-made construído com um diodo emissor de luz como fonte de radiação e um fotodiodo de Si como detector. O minifotômetro elaborado apresentou um bom desempenho com respeito à elevada relação sinal ruído, baixo ruído e sensibilidade satisfatória. A curva analítica foi linear na região de concentração de dipirona de 1,0 × 10-4 a 3,5 × 10-3 mol L-1 tendo sido obtido um limite de detecção de 4,5 × 10-5 mol L-1 e um tempo total de análise de 20 s equivalente à uma frequência analítica de 195 h-1 com pouca geração de resíduos por análise (480 µL).

Nowadays, the attainment of microsystems that integrate most of the stages involved in an analytical process has raised an enormous interest in several research fields. This approach provides experimental set-ups of increased robustness and reliability, which simplify their application to in-line and continuous biomedical and environmental monitoring. In this work, a novel, compact and autonomous 10 microanalyzer aimed at multiwavelength colorimetric determinations is presented. It integrates the microfluidics (a three-dimensional mixer and a 25 mm length "Z-shape" optical flow-cell), a highly versatile multiwavelength optical detection system and the associated electronics for signal processing and drive, all in the same device. The flexibility provided by its design allows the microanalyzer to be operated 15 either in single fixed mode to provide a dedicated photometer or in multiple wavelength mode to obtain discrete pseudospectra. To increase its reliability, automate its operation and allow it to work under unattended conditions, a multicommutation sub-system was developed and integrated to the experimentalset-up. The device was initially evaluated in the absence of chemical reactions using four acidochromic dyes and later applied to determine some key environmental parameters such as phenol index, chromium 20 (VI) and nitrite ions. Results were comparable with those obtained with commercial instrumentation and allowed to demonstrate the versatility of the proposed microanalyzer as an autonomous and portable device able to be applied to other analytical methodologies based on colorimetric determinations. Background To study the changes of children lead exposure in the city of Torreon during the last five years, after environmental and public health interventions, using the timeline of lead in blood concentration as the biomarker of exposure and its relation to lead in soil concentrations. Methods This follow-up study started in 2001 and consisted of 232 children living in nine neighborhoods in Torreon. Children were tested at 0, 6, 12 and 60 months. Lead in blood concentrations, Hemoglobin, Zinc-Protoporphyrin, anthropometric measures and socioeconomic status questionnaire was supplied to the parents. Results Median and range of lead in blood concentrations obtained at 0, 6, 12, 60 months were: 10.12 μg/dl (1.9 - 43.8), 8.75 μg/dl (1.85 - 41.45), 8.4 μg/dl (1.7 - 35.8) and 4.4 μg/dl (1.3 - 30.3), respectively. The decrease of lead in blood levels was significantly related to ages 0, 6, 12 and 60 months of the follow-up study. The timeline of B-Pb was associated with the timeline of lead in soil concentrations. Conclusions B-Pb levels have significantly decreased in the group of children studied. This could be explained by a) environmental interventions by authorities and the smelter companies, b) normal changes in hygienic habits as children age and c) lead redistribution from blood to hard tissues.

Recently, the low temperature co-fired ceramics technology has shown to be an excellent alternative to silicon-based microfabrication techniques for the production of three-dimensional structures using a multi-layer approach. This enables the integration of several unitary operations of a classical analytical process and also the integration of sensors, actuators and electronics in the same substrate. In this work, we show the integration of the actuators and the sensors needed for the control of temperature inside a miniaturized fluidic device. The proposed device presents enough thermal accuracy to be used in chemical systems where temperature control is a crucial factor, such as enzyme reactions or polymerase chain reaction systems. In this work, we have studied the immobilisation of the haemoglobin/glucose oxidase coupled enzymatic system in poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes. These are to be used as a reagent phase either in the development of an optical sensor or as an efficient bilirubin (BR) removal reactor. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was chosen as the support for this purpose, due to its good biocompatibility, hydrophilicity and non-thrombogenic effects. A hydrogel containing the enzymatic system, consisting of PVA crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, was prepared and characterised by DSC, enzyme activity measurements and release tests. Investigating protein conformational changes as a function of temperature and the enzymatic system activity we have found that, in spite of the destabilizing effect of the glutaraldehyde in the acidic medium, the PVA insolubilisation conditions seem do not perturb either the conformation of the [`]native state' nor the enzymatic system activity. Moreover, it was found that PVA/glutaraldehyde membranes offer a simple way to hold enzymatic system, with the possibility of controlling the conditions to obtain either the effective prevention of leaching of the entrapped proteins or the in situ delivery of the haemoglobin. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6TWB-3WN7BVW-6/1/e0eaa7d95e2a3cd559b85f445644c387
