ABSTRACT In 2000, Cleide Costa published a paper presenting the state of knowledge of the Neotropical Coleopte ra, with a focus on the Brazilian fauna. Twenty-four years later, thanks to the development of the Coleoptera section of the Taxonomic Catalog of the Brazilian Fauna (CTFB - Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil) through the collaboration of 100 coleopterists from all over the globe, we can build on Costa’s work and present an updated overview of the state of knowledge of the beetles from Brazil. There are currently 35,699 species in 4,958 genera and 116 families known to occur in the country, including representatives of all extant suborders and superfamilies. Our data show that the Brazilian beetle fauna is the richest on the planet, concentrating 9% of the world species diversity, with some estimates accounting to up to 15% of the global total. The most diverse family in numbers of genera is Cerambycidae (1,056 genera), while in number of species it is Chrysomelidae (6,079 species). Conotrachelus Dejean, 1835 (Curculionidae) is the most species-rich genus, with 570 species. The French entomologist Maurice Pic is the author who has contributed the most to the naming of species recorded from Brazil, with 1,794 valid names in 36 families, whereas the Brazilians Ubirajara R. Martins and Maria Helena M. Galileo are the only ones among the top-ten authors to have named species in the 21st century. Currently, approximately 144 new species of Brazilian beetles are described each year, and this average is projected to increase in the next decade to 180 species per year, or about one new Brazilian beetle every two days.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

The phoretic association of the pseudoscorpion Cordylochernes scorpioides (Linnaeus, 1758) (Chernetidae) on the long-horn beetle Oreodera rufofasciata Bates, 1861 (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is reported for the first time.

Host plants of Cerambycidae and Vesperidae (Coleoptera, Chrysomeloidea) from South America. This paper offers a contribution to the knowledge on host plants of Cerambycidae and Vesperidae (Coleoptera, Chrysomeloidea) from South America. A total of 211 species of longhorn beetles belonging to 111 genera, 49 tribes, five subfamilies and two families are presented with records of host plants. Data on 259 species of host plants distributed among 188 genera and 69 families are listed with the beetle species.Plantas-hospedeiras de Cerambycidae e Vesperidae (Coleoptera, Chrysomeloidea) da América do Sul. Uma contribuição ao conhecimento de plantas-hospedeiras das famílias Cerambycidae e Vesperidae (Coleoptera, Chrysomeloidea) da América do Sul é apresentada. Listam-se 211 espécies com registros de plantas hospedeiras, distribuídas em 111 gêneros, 49 tribos, cinco subfamílias e duas famílias. Os dados de plantas-hospedeiras associadas aos besouros totalizam 259 espécies distribuídas em 188 gêneros e 69 famílias.

Abstract Background Community members in Quibdó (Choco, Colombia) are highly vulnerable to psychosocial problems associated with the internal armed conflict, poverty, and insufficient public services, and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. A pilot study was conducted with conflict-affected adults in Quibdó to assess feasibility and outcomes of a community-based psychosocial support group intervention using three different intervention modalities: in-person, remote (conducted online), and hybrid (half of sessions in-person, half-remote). This group model integrated problem-solving and culturally based expressive activities and was facilitated by local community members with supervision by mental health professionals. Methods This study utilized a mixed-explanatory sequential design (a quantitative phase deriving in a qualitative phase) with 39 participants and 8 staff members. Participants completed quantitative interviews before and after an eight-week group intervention. A subset of 17 participants also completed in-depth qualitative interviews and a focus group discussion was conducted with staff at post-intervention. Results From pre- to post-intervention, participants in all modalities demonstrated improved wellbeing and reduced symptoms of generalized distress, anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress. Use of coping skills varied across modalities, with remote groups associated with a decrease in some forms of coping, including use of social support. In qualitative interviews and the focus group discussion, participants and staff described logistical challenges and successes, as well as facilitators of change such as problem resolution, emotional regulation and social support with variations across modalities, such that remote groups provided fewer opportunities for social support and cohesion. Conclusions Results offer preliminary evidence that this model can address psychosocial difficulties across the three modalities, while also identifying potential risks and challenges, therefore providing useful guidance for service delivery in conflict-affected settings during the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenging contexts. Implications of this study for subsequent implementation of a Randomized Control Trial (RCT) are discussed.

ObjectivesIn this preliminary and multidisciplinary exploratory study, we assessed whether a mindfulness practice could be enhanced through a multisensory experience design that mimics the “beginner’s mind,” relying on sensory awareness and biofeedback processes as participants interact with the experience.MethodsWe piloted and designed two conditions, being (a) a guided mindfulness practice based on the senses as an anchor to the present moment, using audio instruction only; and (b) an experience of mindfulness practice with successive sensory stimulation (olfactory, audio, and visual stimulation) followed by an interactive experience with biofeedback that provides a visual representation of the person’s heartbeat in real-time. For each of the conditions we assessed anxiety (state and trait), as well as other psychological variables pre- and post-experience. Additionally, we measured the heart rate variability (HRV) at baseline, during each stage of the experience as well as post intervention.ResultsWe collected valid data for a total of 68 individuals. Both groups were similar regarding mean age, sex, and occupation and had similar prior experience with mindfulness. There were no significant differences regarding prior state or trait anxiety between the groups. Analysis of the physiological variables showed that for both groups there was an increase in the parasympathetic activity after the multisensory experience, with small differences in the conditions of stimulation. We did not observe significant differences between the pre and post measures for state of test anxiety. The observed parasympathetic activity variations after both experiences compared with pre and post-surveys demonstrate the importance of physiological vs psychological inspection beyond the common human rational experience that is not always resonate with the body’s response and impacts the needed literacy to self-awareness of emotional well-being.ConclusionParticipants in both conditions could effectively connect with the experience, while achieving a physiological response different from their baseline state. The acceptance of the designed stimuli was very high, although more research is still needed to uncover its full potential. In sum, the design of multisensory experiences using technology to create an interactive connection with the sensory stimulus, is a promising field in mindfulness and especially in practices involving sensory awareness through the monitoring of parasympathetic activity as an inference indicator of the present-moment connection.

ABSTRACT Neoptychodes hondurae trivittatus (Taschenberg, 1870) is synonymized with N. hondurae (White, 1858). The holotype of the former is illustrated for the first time. The identity of the holotype of N. cosmeticus Martins & Galileo, 1996 is commented. All species of Neoptychodes Dillon & Dillon, 1941 are illustrated and a key to species of the genus is provided.

Introducción: la relación entre los factores de riesgo cardiovascular (FRCV) y los factores metabólicos con deterioro cognitivo (DC), definido como deterioro cognitivo leve (DCL) o demencia, es controversial. Objetivo: describir los FRCV y metabólicos relacionados con DC, en una muestra de adultos de Bogotá. Material y métodos: se diseñó un estudio de corte transversal y se evaluó el estado cognitivo en dos fases, en adultos mayores de 50 años, autónomos, no institucionalizados, aplicando pruebas neuropsicológicas y un protocolo de evaluación neuropsiquiátrica. Los FRCV y metabólicos fueron documentados por autoreporte, y se tomaron medidas antropométricas. Resultados: en 1.045 adultos estudiados, el promedio de edad fue de 68 años (DS 8.6), y de educación 8 años (DS 6.0), 76 % fueron mujeres, 56 % presentaba hipertensión arterial (HTA), 40 % dislipidemia, 37 % fueron fumadores, 37 % tenían sobrepeso, 28 % hipotiroidismo, 25 % obesidad, 17 % consumían alcohol y 16 % eran diabéticos. El DCL se asoció con escolaridad de primaria-incompleta OR:1.94 (95 % IC: 1.21- 3.14), primaria-completa OR:1.96 (95 % IC: 1.18- 3.25), bachillerato- incompleto OR:3.01 (95 % IC: 1.80-5.05), bachillerato-completo OR: 2.54 (95 % IC: 1.45- 4.45) y con edad entre 70 y 79 años OR:2.06 (95% IC: 1.32-3.23). La demencia se asoció con escolaridades de primaria-incompleta OR: 11.20 (95 % IC: 4.99- 25.12), primaria-completa OR: 7.91 (95 % IC: 3.44-18.16), bachillerato- incompleto OR: 2.87 (95 % IC: 1.17- 7.01) y con edades entre 70 -79 años OR: 2.82. (95 % IC: 1.37-5.80), o mayores de 80 años OR: 7.68 (95 % IC: 3.49- 16.90) y con sufrir HTA OR: 1.45 (95 % IC: 1.03-2.05). Conclusión: la baja escolaridad, una edad avanzada y sufrir HTA son en su orden los factores más importantes para el desarrollo de la demencia. Los adultos entre 70 y 79 años con bachillerato incompleto, tienen mayor riesgo de DCL.

Abstract The validity of two forgotten names, EryphusKlug, 1829 and E. rubricollisKlug, 1829, is discussed. The former is considered a nomen oblitum and synonymized with EriphusAudinet-Serville, 1834, a nomen protectum; the latter is revalidated and Eriphus purpuratus Chevrolat, 1862 is considered a junior synonym of Eriphus rubricollis (Klug, 1829). A lectotype is designated to Eryphus rubricollisKlug, 1829. The date of the work where EriphusAudinet-Serville, 1834 was described is corrected. A new genus is described in Dichophyiini Gistel, 1848 to include the species currently allocated in Eryphus sensuNapp & Martins (2002). The dates of publication of genera and species described by Fairmaire & Germain (Révision des Coléoptères du Chili (suite)) are corrected.

Objective We aimed to describe the prevalence and factors associated with the need for supplemental oxygen and persistent symptoms 1 year after severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods In this historical cohort and nested case–control study, we included adults with severe COVID-19 (requiring admission to the intensive care unit or invasive mechanical ventilation). We evaluated factors associated with a need for supplemental oxygen and persistent symptoms 1 year after severe infection. Results We included 135 patients (median age 62 years, 30% women). At 1-year follow-up, the main symptoms were dyspnea (32%), myalgia (9%), cough (7%), anxiety (4%), and depression (5%); 12.59% of patients had prolonged requirement for supplemental oxygen. Factors associated with a persistent requirement for supplemental oxygen were female sex (odds ratio 3.15, 95% confidence interval 1.11–8.90) and Charlson Comorbidity Index > 4 (odds ratio 1.60, 95% confidence interval 1.20–2.12). Conclusions We found that a high prevalence of supplemental oxygen requirement 1 year after severe COVID infection was associated with female sex and a baseline high rate of comorbidities. It is unknown whether this prevalence was related to other factors, such as the altitude at which patients lived. More than half of patients had prolonged post-COVID syndrome.

An annotated catalogue of the type specimens of the family Cerambycidae Latreille, 1802 (Coleoptera) housed at the Zoological Museum of Hamburg (ZMH), Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB) is provided: one holotype and nine secondary types were found deposited at the ZHM. A list of the primary types lost during the bombardment in the Second World War is also provided, including types of 103 names, 14 of Cerambycinae, 87 of Lamiinae, and two of Prioninae. In addition, we report secondary types that have been found, corresponding to names of subspecific rank and unavailable names with infrasubspecific rank.

Objective: Data on the frequency of cardiovascular disease in people living with human immunodeficiency virus from low- and middle-income countries is scarce. Methods: We performed an observational study based on data from a historical cohort of people living with human immunodeficiency virus in Colombia during a 10-year follow-up to describe the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and their behavior according to CD4 count. Results: One thousand patients were initially included, out of which 390 had a 10-year follow-up. The mean age was 34 (standard deviation 10) years, and 90% were male. Anomaly detection is a well-known topic in cybersecurity. Its application to the Internet of Things can lead to suitable protection techniques against problems such as denial of service attacks. However, Intrusion Detection Systems based on Artificial Intelligence, as a defense mechanism, need robust data sources to achieve strong generalization levels from the knowledge domain of interest. Therefore, in this research we present the LATAM-DDoS-IoT dataset, which results from a collaboration among Aligo, Universidad de Antioquia, and Tecnologico de Monterrey. The LATAM-DDoS-IoT dataset includes attack traffic to physical Internet of Things devices and normal traffic from real external users consuming actual services from Aligo’s production network. We also compare this new dataset with the Bot-IoT dataset, as the latter is a collection of data used in recent approaches to create detection systems in the Internet of Things domain. Furthermore, we build a smart anomaly-based Intrusion Detection System from our new dataset, training Decision Tree and Multi-layer Perceptron models, for later deployment and evaluation on a Software Defined Networking architecture with physical and virtual components. Before deployment, we obtained an average accuracy of 99.967% and 98.872% with our new dataset’s balanced denial of service and distributed denial of service versions. After deployment, we show that our Intrusion Detection System does not misclassify legitimate traffic and detects more than 90% of the attacks.

Abstract Eburodacrys pilicornis Fisher, 1944 is redescribed based on a female from Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul), and new state record for Venezuela and new department record for Colombia are provided. Notes and new state records in Brazil for Tilloglomus spectabile Martins, 1975 are provided. The pronotal shape of Piezocera flavipennis (Zajciw, 1970) is commented on. Piezocera serraticollis Linell, 1897 is synonymized with P. monochroa Bates, 1885 and an updated key to species of Piezocera Audinet-Serville, 1834 is provided. Lepturges (Lepturges) luanae sp. nov. is described from Brazil (Goiás). New geographical records are provided for an additional 17 species belonging to three subfamilies (Cerambycinae, Lamiinae and Lepturinae): Gnomidolon cruciferum (Gounelle, 1909); Microibidion bimaculatum Mehl, Galileo, Martins & Santos-Silva, 2015; Lepturges (Lepturges) centralis Monné, 1978; Lepturges (Lepturges) mattogrossis Gilmour, 1962; Leptostylus perniciosus Monné & Hoffmann, 1981; Urgleptes villiersi Gilmour, 1962; Oreodera bituberculata Bates, 1861; Rosalba smaragdina (Breuning, 1940); Colobothea rubroornata Zajciw, 1962; Aerenea subimpetiginosa Breuning, 1948; Cicuiara nitidula (Bates, 1866); Desmiphora (Desmiphora) crocata Melzer, 1935; Estola acricula Bates, 1866; Gisostola bahiensis Martins & Galileo, 1988; Hypsioma chapadensis Dillon & Dillon, 1945; Lypsimena fuscata Haldeman, 1847; and Strangalia flavocincta (Thomson, 1861).

Individuals with disabilities living in developing countries often face numerous challenges which make particularly difficult for them to fulfill basic life needs. We present the case study of twelve people unable to walk in a low-income neighborhood of Bogota, Colombia. As health professionals and human rights advocates, we have provided care to these individuals over the past 15 years. Following a subjectivist epistemological approach to qualitative research, we found that these individuals experience four main types of limitations: socio-economic, structural/environmental, emotional, and functional, which restrict their autonomy and life satisfaction. Their limitations make life strenuous and usually produce feelings of sadness, uselessness, and hopelessness. Social support, primarily from family members, alleviates these limitations. By following this group over time, we witnessed a rapid impairment of their health and emotional status, as well as their family members’ growing exhaustion. Several policy changes and practical measures to address this situation are proposed.

In recent years, communication networks on modern power substations have grown both in size and complexity, demanding the highest levels of reliability. However, there is no unique criterion to define the structure of the topology in such networks, since in every substation the end user implements their own topology or the topology suggested by a vendor, according to IEC 61850 standard guidelines. This paper proposes a methodology, using integer linear programming, to solve the problem of generating a reliable network topology in a software-defined power substations context. The trustworthiness of the reached solution is evaluated using terminal reliability techniques, graph metrics, and end-to-end time delay performance. The obtained results confirm that the proposed network topology is highly reliable to be implemented in power substations, according to the network redundancy considerations proposed by the IEC 62439 standard, and the operation time requirements suggested by the on IEC 61850 standard. In addition, we present software defined networking-based solutions for loop-based topologies in the proposed network topology, which would be technically unfeasible using traditional network protocols. These solutions include algorithms to solve problems related to the broadcast traffic containment and the diffusion and reliability of the multicast traffic.

The deployment of infrastructures related to the Smart Grid concept introduces data communication networks in the grid operation systems (control, communication, and monitoring). The implementation of data communication networks facilitates and improves the efficiency of the tasks related to the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical energy. In turn, network management is being permeated by new technologies such as Software Defined Networking (SDN) and network virtualization, that promote automation and innovation of communication networks aiming to overcome the lack of flexibility and the difficulties to evolve that are present in current communication networks. In this context, this paper proposes a reconceptualization of the power substations communications network architecture based on the IEC 61850 standard. Here, we present a complete view of the Smart Solution for Substation Networks (S3N) architecture, which allows modeling the future power substations communication networks taking advantage of the benefits introduced by SDN and virtualization technologies. In addition, in order to provide a better understanding of the challenges arising in this area, and to generate new research interest in this field, a review of several studies oriented to determine the feasibility of incorporating SDN as a key element to improve the management and operation of the power substations communication networks is presented.

Ysachron pilosus gen. et sp. nov. is described from the Caribbean region of Colombia, and an updated key to genera of South American Achrysonini is provided. Moreover, the geographical distribution of 45 species of Cerambycidae, belonging to the subfamilies Cerambycinae, Lamiinae and Prioninae, is expanded, including nine new country records for Colombia and a further locality in Colombia for nine species.

INTRODUCCIÓN: La neurofibromatosis (enfermedad de von Recklinghausen) es una enfermedad autosómica dominante que presenta principalmente manifestaciones cutáneas y neurológicas. El objetivo es describir actualmente si existe o no relación entre las mutaciones encontradas en los pacientes con neurofibromatosis tipo 1 y las características clínicas que presentan. MÉTODOS: Se realizó un artículo de revisión narrativa para evaluar la relación con el genotipo y fenotipo de los pacientes con neurofibromatosis tipo 1. Se revisaron las bases de datos PubMed, Embase y Lilacs. Se utilizaron los siguientes términos Mesh: Neurofibromatosis, neurofibromatosis tipo 1, genes, genotipo, fenotipo, mutaciones, secuenciación de exoma. Los estudios identificados fueron revisados y analizados. Se presentan los datos de manera cualitativa. RESULTADOS: De 425 artículos, 62 contenían la información necesaria para hacer el análisis. A pesar de que algunos estudios han presentado evidencia de asociación en relación a las mutaciones encontradas y la clínica, realmente no existe una correlación genotipo-fenotipo comprobada en neurofibromatosis tipo 1. Esto sugiere que para los fenotipos discordantes con genotipo similar existen otros factores que deben considerarse tales como la epigenética, alteraciones genéticas o incluso factores ambientales. CONCLUSIONES: Es necesario realizar estudios con cohortes más grande de pacientes para seguir estudiando si existe una relación directa o no.

Se presenta un sensor de fibra óptica para mediciones de temperatura en ambientes propensos a cambios de índices de refracción. La punta sensora está compuesta por una fibra óptica monomodo/monomodo, dispuesta en una configuración interferométrica. Este interferómetro se recubrió mediante la técnica de pulverización catódica utilizando oro. La medición de la temperatura se llevó a cabo mediante el control del cambio del patrón de interferencia a medida que aumentaba la temperatura ambiente. Se encontró que el patrón de interferencia era sensible a la temperatura, pero no era afectado por cambios en el índice de refracción del medio externo. Este comportamiento amplía la gama de entornos en los que puede funcionar el sensor.

Protracted conflict is one of the largest human challenges that have persistently undermined economic and social progress. In recent years, there has been increased emphasis on using statistical and physical science models to better understand both the universal patterns and the underlying mechanics of conflict. Whilst macroscopic power-law fractal patterns have been shown for death-toll in wars and self-excitation models have been shown for roadside ambush attacks, very few works deal with the challenge of complex dynamics between gangs at the intra-city scale. Here, based on contributions to the historical memory of the conflict in Colombia, Medellin's gang-confrontation-network is presented. It is shown that socio-economic and violence indexes are moderate to highly correlated to the structure of the network. Specifically, the death-toll of conflict is strongly influenced by the leading eigenvalues of the gangs' conflict adjacency matrix, which serves a proxy for unstable self-excitation from revenge attacks. The distribution of links based on the geographic distance between gangs in confrontation leads to the confirmation that territorial control is a main catalyst of violence and retaliation among gangs. As a first attempt to explore the time evolution of the confrontation network, the Boltzmann-Lotka-Volterra (BLV) dynamic interaction network analysis is applied to quantify the spatial embeddedness of the dynamic relationship between conflicting gangs in Medellin. However, the non-stationary character of the violence in Medellin during the observation period restricts the application of the BLV model and results suggest that more involved and comprehensive models are needed to described the dynamics of Medellin's armed conflict.

El diseño de capa cruzada se considera una poderosa alternativa para dar solución a las complejidades introducidas por las comunicaciones inalámbricas en redes de área corporal (WBAN), donde el modelo clásico de comunicaciones no ha exhibido un desempeño adecuado. Respecto al problema puntual de consumo de energía, hemos preparado la presente revisión de las publicaciones más relevantes que tratan la eficiencia energética para WBAN usando diseño de capa cruzada. En este artículo se proporciona una revisión exhaustiva de los avances en aproximaciones, protocolos y optimizaciones de capa cruzada cuyo objetivo es incrementar el tiempo de vida de las redes WBAN mediante el ahorro de energía. Luego, se discute los aspectos relevantes y deficiencias de las técnicas de capa cruzada energéticamente eficientes. Además, se introducen aspectos de investigación abiertos y retos en el diseño de capa cruzada para WBAN. En esta revisión proponemos una taxonomía de las aproximaciones de capa cruzada, de modo que las técnicas revisadas se ajustan en categorías de acuerdo a los protocolos involucrados en el diseño. Una clasificación novedosa se incluye para hacer claridad en los conceptos teóricos involucrados en cada esquema de capa cruzada y para luego agrupar aproximaciones similares evidenciando las diferencias con otras técnicas entre sí. Nuestras conclusiones consideran los aspectos de movilidad y modelamiento del canal en escenarios de WBAN como las direcciones para futura investigación en WBAN y en aplicaciones de telemedicina.

Mucho se ha dicho sobre el famoso pintor Vincent Van Gogh. La mayoría de los escritores buscan explicar cómo este hombre de vasto talento pudo comunicar su enorme dolor a través de la pintura y producir obras de belleza abrumadora. Otros se ocuparon por entender si las varias enfermedades y aflicciones que tuvo se convirtieron en una influencia para la forma como representó la vida. Objetivo: es nuestro propósito encontrar una relación entre las dos apreciaciones, para dar una mirada a su existencia de adentro hacia afuera y poder dar luz sobre la obra sin paralelo de Van Gogh; podrían su manejo del color y el uso magistral de la forma tener una razón biológica o quizá una profundamente sentimental.

“Betsabé en su baño” de Rembrand es un ejemplo por excelencia de la forma en que el arte se convierte en un medio único para contar historias y, al mismo tiempo, el objeto de escrutinio para el ojo de innumerables personas, incluidos los médicos, que buscan desesperadamente pistas en las pinturas. St. Valentine of Terni a third-century Roman saint was known as the patron saint of lovers. He had the reputation of healing the sick and is said to have restored the sight of Julia the daughter of Asterius his jailer. Valentine had been imprisoned for secretly marrying couples disobeying the edict of roman Emperor Claudius II. The edict forbade roman soldiers to marry for it was thought marriage would diminish their efficiency in the battlefield. Asterius converted to Christianity after his daughter was healed. Valentine and Asterius were beheaded by order of Emperor Claudius II. Before his execution on February 14, 271 AD. Valentine wrote a love letter to Julia signed “from your Valentine” giving rise to the cele- bration of St. Valentine’s Day. But St. Valentine’s role as the patron saint of epilepsy is less widely known, for epilepsy was defined as an incurable disease thought of as a supernatural event such as a curse or a possession by an evil spirit. Since there was no cure for epilepsy healing was only possible by divine intervention and saints were called upon to intercede for these patients. While Valentine is widely known as the patron of lovers, very few people know he also was helpful and beneficent to people with epilepsy in ancient times.

Generalmente, son secundarias a traumatismos o a un procedimiento quirúrgico; con menos frecuencia, pueden ser espontáneas posteriores a accesos de tos. El diagnóstico se hace por el cuadro clínico y debe confirmarse con radiografía o tomografía, con las cuales se puede ver la protrusión del tejido pulmonar a través de los espacios intercostales. Pueden tratarse de manera conservadora si son asintomáticas, pero el tratamiento más común es el quirúrgico, con técnica abierta o asistida por video. Se presenta una revisión bibliográfica y el reporte de un caso manejado con técnica asistida por video.

Este artículo es parte de los resultados de una investigación para conocer el proceso de gestión de la integración social de la investigación de nueve instituciones de educación superior co lombianas. En la investigación se analizaron 21 proyectos de investigación de diferentes áreas de conocimiento y tipo de investigaciones (básica, aplicada e I+D+I). Las técnicas e instrumentos utilizados fueron la entrevista semiestrucrurada o enfocada, el grupo focal y análisis documental. Los resultados muestran que la integración es un proceso complejo que implica transferencia y apropiación y que para que exista una gestión de la integración del conocimiento se necesita no solamente una capacidad de gestión sobre los diferentes temas involucrados en la integración (intencionalidad, actores, estructuras organizacionales), sino que adicionalmente existan requerimientos y exigencias muy concretas en las políticas de Estado para el fomento a la investigación.

Elytrimitatrix (Grossifemora) pubescens Santos-Silva & Hovore, 2008 (Disteniidae) is redescribed based on three males, morphological and chromatic variation in the species is reported. The unknown female of Neocompsa flavoquadripunctata Botero & Santos-Silva, 2022 is shortly described and a new Mexican state record is provided. The absence of the paratype of Nealcidion bruchi (Melzer, 1934) in the MZSP collection (see acronym below) is reported, and the date of description of the species is commented. Alphinellus Bates, 1881 is transferred from Acanthocinini to Desmiphorini. Alphinellus minimus Bates, 1881 is recorded for the first time from the Mexican state of Campeche and from Guatemala. Three new species are described: Psyrassa peninsularis sp. nov. (Cerambycidae, Cerambycinae, Elaphidiini) from Mexico (Quintana Roo); Pseudastylopsis skillmani sp. nov. (Cerambycidae, Lamiinae, Acanthocinini), from Guatemala; and Eranina amaura sp. nov. (Cerambycidae, Lamiinae, Hemilophini), from Guatemala.

Abstract Background Cerebral blood flow dynamics can be explored through analysis of endothelial frequencies. Our hypothesis posits a disparity in endothelial activity among neonates with perinatal asphyxia, stratified by the presence or absence of neuronal lesions. Methods We conducted a retrospective longitudinal study involving newborns treated with hypothermia for moderate to severe asphyxia. Participants were grouped based on the presence or absence of neuronal damage to investigate temporal endothelial involvement in cerebral blood flow regulation. Regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rScO2) was measured using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and temporal series were analyzed in the frequency domain, utilizing the original frequency of the INVOS™ device. Results The study included 88 patients, with 53% (47/88) being male and 33% (29/88) demonstrating brain lesions on magnetic resonance imaging. Among them, 86% (76/88) had a gestational age exceeding 37 weeks according to the Ballard scale, and 81% (71/88) had a birth weight exceeding 2500 g. Cohen’s d effect size was calculated to assess differences in endothelial frequency between groups, indicating a small effect size based on cerebral MRI findings (Cohen’s d values for Day 2 = 0.2351 and Day 3 = 0.2325). Conclusion NIRS represents a valuable tool for monitoring cerebral autoregulation in neonates affected by perinatal asphyxia, underscoring the utility of assessing endothelial frequency or energy on rScO2 measured by NIRS using the original INVOS™ device frequency.

Introducción. En los países de medianos y bajos ingresos, los datos sobre la mortalidad y los factores de riesgo en pacientes con enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica son limitados. Objetivo. Identificar la incidencia de muerte y sus variables relacionadas en una población colombiana durante 12 meses de seguimiento. Materiales y métodos. Se llevó a cabo un estudio retrospectivo de sujetos con diagnóstico de enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica en una clínica de tercer nivel en Colombia. Los cocientes de probabilidades se calcularon mediante un análisis de regresión logística multivariable con la variable de resultado “mortalidad a los 12 meses”. Resultados. Ingresaron 524 pacientes, de los cuales el 18,1 % (95 / 524) murió. La edad promedio fue de 69,7 (DE = 8,92) y el 59,2 % (310 / 524) eran mujeres. Las variables asociadas con la mortalidad fueron la edad (OR = 6,54; IC95%: 3,65-11,36; p < 0,001), años de exposición al humo de leña (OR = 4,59; IC95%: 1,64-12,82; p = 0,002), insuficiencia cardiaca crónica (OR = 1,81; IC95%: 1,13-2,91; p = 0,014), enfermedad cerebrovascular (OR = 3,35; IC95%: 1,04-10,75; p = 0,032) y enfermedad renal crónica (OR=6,96; IC 95%:1,15-41,67; p = 0,015). Al ajustar las variables en el análisis multivariado únicamente se mostró asociación entre el sexo (OR = 1,55; IC95%: 0,95-2,54; p = 0,008) y la edad (OR = 5,94; IC95%: 3,3-10,69; p < 0,001). Conclusión. La edad, los años de exposición al humo de leña, la insuficiencia cardiaca crónica, la enfermedad cerebrovascular y la renal crónica fueron variables clínicas asociadas a un desenlace fatal. Sin embargo, la edad y el sexo fueron las únicas relacionadas con la mortalidad al ajustarlas por factores de confusión.

Introduction: Lung cancer (LC) is a disease with a great impact worldwide in the number of deaths and health costs. The high incidence and mortality of this disease associated with late diagnosis and the improved prognosis with early detection determine that it is a pathology that can benefit from early detection. Low radiation dose tomography (LDCT) demonstrated a method that can be performed periodically to a group of people at high risk of developing CP and thus reduce mortality from this disease. However, this benefit is such when it is developed under an organized program with multidisciplinary participation specialized in lung cancer. Methods: It is proposed to determine basic guidelines for the development of early detection of lung cancer in Latin America so that it can be carried out uniformly, with the lowest risk and the maximum expected benefit. The main publications referring to this topic were analyzed, considering the diversity of care and access in Latin America. Result: Minimum requirements are developed for the implementation of a program. Discussion: The number of programs in the region is small and depends more on individual efforts than on general health policies. We consider that these guidelines can serve as support for the development of more programs in the region and in a more homogeneous way.

Traffic Classification (TC) systems are designed to identify the applications generating network traffic. Recent advancements in TC leverage Deep Learning (DL) techniques, surpassing traditional methods in complex scenarios, including those with encrypted traffic. Notably, state-of-the-art DL-based TC systems have been developed for wireless networks using Physical Layer (L1) packets. This approach overcomes the common limitation in TC research that assumes traffic flows within a wired network under a single network management domain. Despite their benefits, DL-based TC systems often demand significant computational resources, typically available only in cloud environments. Consequently, deploying models at the edge is often infeasible due to their resource-intensive nature, given their original training and optimization for high-resource environments. The inherent challenge lies in adapting these systems for edge computing scenarios, including deployment at access points. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology that exploits expert knowledge in combination with recent advances in Multi-Task Learning (MTL) and Deep Neural Network (DNN) optimization to allow spectrum-based TC systems to run on constrained devices. This paper propose a well-defined and innovative methodology for resource-efficient, spectrum-based TC to address this issue, combining MTL with DNN optimization techniques. Performance evaluations on an NVIDIA Jetson TX2 demonstrate that our most optimized MTL model, handling four TC tasks, can reduce memory requirements by a factor of 2.65x and improve execution time by 3.6x compared to sequential execution of four Single-Task Learning (STL) models in a server-grade configuration, with minimal accuracy impact (less than a 0.5% drop) and energy efficiency of 0.97 millijoules per sample at inference. Compared to other edge platforms such as the Raspberry Pi model 3B+ (RPI3B+) with a low-power Artificial Intelligence (AI)-accelerator such as the Coral Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), the NVIDIA Jetson achieves a 12-fold improvement in energy efficiency with no impact on accuracy.These are the first available results to provide a benchmark for different performance metrics (memory, computing, energy) over heterogeneous constrained devices for this type of TC system.

The field of cybersecurity has witnessed a significant shift towards Programmable Data Planes with the emergence of the P4 programming P4. The existing literature lacks a comprehensive taxonomy that provides collaborative classifications and characterization of P4-based cybersecurity solutions. In this paper, we propose a novel taxonomy to better characterize published works in the field of cybersecurity solutions developed leveraging P4 and Programmable Data Planes. Our taxonomy introduces three main categories: detection techniques, mitigation actions, and deployment platforms. Unlike existing classification approaches present in literature, our taxonomy allows categorizing a given work according to different criteria, thus enabling collaborative classifications and the identification of shared features by highlighting intra-category and inter-category relationships that can be established among different works. Through our comprehensive characterization of the works identified in the literature, we present key findings that contribute to extend the current understanding of the field. By identifying the diverse range of techniques employed and the platforms utilized, we aim at addressing the needs to understand the area, which is fundamental for future advancements. Notably, we emphasize the significance of security provisioning through the adoption of cybersecurity functional abstractions. These abstractions enable the emulation of the behavior of conventional security devices, leveraging the capabilities of P4. Furthermore, we discuss several research challenges and possible future directions that have emerged from our analysis. This paper focuses on providing valuable insights and knowledge for researchers and practitioners in the field of cybersecurity solutions based on Programmable Data Planes leveraging P4, with the final goal of opening avenues for new research.

In the contemporary cybersecurity landscape, robust attack detection mechanisms are important for organizations. However, the current state of research in Software-Defined Networking (SDN) suffers from a notable lack of recent SDN-OpenFlow-based datasets. This study seeks to bridge this gap by introducing a novel dataset for intrusion detection in Software-Defined Networking named SDNFlow. The dataset, derived from OpenFlow statistics gathered from real traffic, integrates a comprehensive range of network activities. An empirical evaluation leveraging diverse Machine and deep Learning algorithms was performed. Namely, Logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, K-nearest neighbors, Support Vector Machines, and Multilayer Perceptron were tested getting pretty good results with a precision average of 98% to 99% in binary classification and from 97% to 99% in multiclass classification depending of the attack, we highlight the efficacy of K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) for traffic classification, particularly in detecting DDoS attacks and port scanning. The dataset is valuable for evaluating intrusion detection systems within SDN environments and deepening the understanding of traffic patterns in Software Defined Networks.

Summary: The auxin-inducible degron (AID) system is a broadly used tool for spatiotemporal and reversible control of protein depletion in multiple experimental model systems. AID2 technology relies on a synthetic ligand, 5-phenyl-indole-3-acetic acid (5-Ph-IAA), for improved specificity and efficiency of protein degradation. Here, we provide a protocol for cost-effective 5-Ph-IAA synthesis utilizing the Suzuki coupling of 5-chloroindole and phenylboronic acid. We describe steps for evaluating the quality of lab-synthesized 5-Ph-IAA using a C. elegans AID2 tester strain. : Publisher’s note: Undertaking any experimental protocol requires adherence to local institutional guidelines for laboratory safety and ethics.

The prionid genus Calocomus Audinet-Serville, 1832 is a South American group that is currently composed of five species. Of the known species, only C. kreuchelyi Buquet, 1840 is known by females. Herein, the unknown male of Calocomus kreuchelyi Buquet, 1840 is described, including its terminalia, and the species is newly recorded for the Casanare department. Additionally, a map of the geographical distribution of C. kreuchelyi and an updated key to the species of Calocomus are provided. The validity of the spelling “kreuchelyi” is discussed.

Abstract Background Community-based psychosocial support (CB-PSS) interventions utilizing task sharing and varied (in-person, remote) modalities are essential strategies to meet mental health needs, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, knowledge gaps remain regarding feasibility and effectiveness. Methods This study assesses feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of a CB-PSS intervention for conflict-affected adults in Colombia through parallel randomized controlled trials, one delivered in-person (n = 165) and the other remotely (n = 103), implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic and national protests. Interventions were facilitated by nonspecialist community members and consisted of eight problem-solving and expressive group sessions. Findings Attendance was moderate and fidelity was high in both modalities. Participants in both modalities reported high levels of satisfaction, with in-person participants reporting increased comfort expressing emotions and more positive experiences with research protocols. Symptoms of depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder improved among in-person participants, but there were no significant changes for remote participants in comparison to waitlist controls. Implications This CB-PSS intervention appears feasible and acceptable in both in-person and remote modalities and associated with reduction in some forms of distress when conducted in-person but not when conducted remotely. Methodological limitations and potential explanations and areas for future research are discussed, drawing from related studies.

Introducción. Las duplicaciones gástricas son entidades congénitas poco frecuentes que se diagnostican principalmente en las etapas tempranas de la vida, y rara vez en pacientes adultos. El objetivo de este artículo fue presentar el caso de un adulto con esta patología, tratado exitosamente mediante cirugía. Caso clínico. Mujer de 26 años de edad con epigastralgia crónica refractaria a manejo médico, a quien durante endoscopia digestiva superior se le identificó una lesión quística sugestiva de tumor estromal gastrointestinal, confirmada por ultrasonido endoscópico. Resultados. Se realizó una resección quirúrgica laparoscópica asistida por endoscopia, con buena evolución postoperatoria. El estudio anatomo-patológico informó la presencia de un quiste de duplicación gástrica. Conclusiones. A pesar de las ayudas diagnósticas disponibles en la actualidad, esta patología representa un reto diagnóstico importante que, en muchas ocasiones solo puede ser confirmado mediante el estudio anatomopatológico. En paciente asintomático, continúa la controversia entre observarlo o llevarlo a cirugía, por el riesgo de malignidad. Actualmente, el manejo de las duplicaciones gástricas en adultos se considera eminentemente quirúrgico. Las resecciones laparoscópicas y el uso de endoscopia intraoperatoria permiten garantizar la resección completa de la lesión, preservando la mayor cantidad de tejido sano adyacente y previniendo estenosis o deformidades gástricas que afecten su adecuado funcionamiento.

While 5G has become a reality in several places around the world, some countries are still in the process of assigning frequency bands and deploying networks. In this context, there is a significant opportunity to explore new market models for the management and utilization of the radio spectrum. Access to the radio spectrum results in diverse competition schemes, where market behavior varies based on the regulator-defined access scheme and the competitive strategies of different actors. To thoroughly analyze potential competition scenarios, this work introduces a model that enhances the comprehension of market variables, emphasizing behaviors influenced by relationships. The model’s development leverages the potential of artificial intelligence and historical data from Colombia’s mobile telecommunications market. Intelligent spectrum sensing, based on Software Defined Radio, augments the model’s construction, utilizing lightweight AI algorithms to acquire real data on spectrum occupancy. In this way, the model provides novel insights into market dynamics, enabling the formulation of informed decision-making policies for regulatory bodies. Additionally, the application of causal machine learning (CausalML) helps understand the underlying causes of market behaviors, facilitating the design of guiding policies to maximize spectrum usage and foster competition. This approach demonstrates how AI-driven approaches and a deeper understanding of market dynamics can lead to effective 5G spectrum management, fostering a more competitive and efficient wireless communication landscape.

Drying–wetting cycles play a crucial role in the investigation of the origin of life as processes that both concentrate and induce the supramolecular assembly and polymerization of biomolecular building blocks, such as nucleotides and amino acids. Here, we test different microfluidic devices to study the dehydration–hydration cycles of the aqueous solutions of small molecules, and to observe, by optical microscopy, the insurgence of phase transitions driven by self-assembly, exploiting water pervaporation through polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). As a testbed, we investigate solutions of the chromonic dye Sunset Yellow (SSY), which self-assembles into face-to-face columnar aggregates and produces nematic and columnar liquid crystal (LC) phases as a function of concentration. We show that the LC temperature–concentration phase diagram of SSY can be obtained with a fair agreement with previous reports, that droplet hydration–dehydration can be reversibly controlled and automated, and that the simultaneous incubation of samples with different final water contents, corresponding to different phases, can be implemented. These methods can be further extended to study the assembly of diverse prebiotically relevant small molecules and to characterize their phase transitions.

Introducción. Los pacientes con antecedente de baipás gástrico que presentan coledocolitiasis no pueden ser tratados con la técnica convencional de colangiopancreatografía retrógrada endoscópica. En estos casos, la vía transgástrica abierta o asistida por laparoscopia, se convierte en una excelente alternativa a la exploración abierta de la vía biliar. Métodos. Estudio retrospectivo que incluyó pacientes adultos con coledocolitiasis y antecedente de gastrectomía subtotal o baipás gástrico con Y de Roux, llevados a colangiopancreatografía endoscópica transgástrica laparoasistida, entre enero de 2019 y diciembre de 2021, en la Clínica CES de Medellín, Colombia. Resultados. Se encontraron siete pacientes, todos con antecedente de baipás gástrico para el manejo de la obesidad. La tasa de identificación y canulación de la vía biliar y extracción de cálculos fue del 100 % mediante el abordaje transgástrico laparo-asistido. Conclusión. De acuerdo con varias revisiones sistemáticas, esta técnica es relativamente fácil de implementar y segura, presentando una tasa de complicaciones inferior a 5 %. Se propone una variante de esta técnica.

The Internet of Things (IoT), projected to exceed 30 billion active device connections globally by 2025, presents an expansive attack surface. The frequent collection and dissemination of confidential data on these devices exposes them to significant security risks, including user information theft and denial-of-service attacks. This paper introduces a smart, network-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) designed to protect IoT networks from distributed denial-of-service attacks. Our methodology involves generating synthetic images from flow-level traffic data of the Bot-IoT and the LATAM-DDoS-IoT datasets and conducting experiments within both supervised and self-supervised learning paradigms. Self-supervised learning is identified in the state of the art as a promising solution to replace the need for massive amounts of manually labeled data, as well as providing robust generalization. Our results showcase that self-supervised learning surpassed supervised learning in terms of classification performance for certain tests. Specifically, it exceeded the F1 score of supervised learning for attack detection by 4.83% and by 14.61% in accuracy for the multiclass task of protocol classification. Drawing from extensive ablation studies presented in our research, we recommend an optimal training framework for upcoming contrastive learning experiments that emphasize visual representations in the cybersecurity realm. This training approach has enabled us to highlight the broader applicability of self-supervised learning, which, in some instances, outperformed supervised learning transferability by over 5% in precision and nearly 1% in F1 score.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, have had an exponential evolution in recent times due in large part to the development of technologies that enhance the development of these devices. This has resulted in increasingly affordable and better-equipped artifacts, which implies their application in new fields such as agriculture, transport, monitoring, and aerial photography. However, drones have also been used in terrorist acts, privacy violations, and espionage, in addition to involuntary accidents in high-risk zones such as airports. In response to these events, multiple technologies have been introduced to control and monitor the airspace in order to ensure protection in risk areas. This paper is a review of the state of the art of the techniques, methods, and algorithms used in video, radiofrequency, and audio-based applications to detect UAVs and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). This study can serve as a starting point to develop future drone detection systems with the most convenient technologies that meet certain requirements of optimal scalability, portability, reliability, and availability.
