The applicability extent of hadron therapy for tumor treatment is currently limited by the lack of reliable online monitoring techniques. An active topic of investigation is the research of monitoring systems based on the detection of secondary radiation produced during treatment. MACACO, a multi-layer Compton camera based on LaBr3 scintillator crystals and SiPMs, is being developed at IFIC-Valencia for this purpose. This work reports the results obtained from measurements of a 150 MeV proton beam impinging on a PMMA target. A neural network trained on Monte Carlo simulations is used for event selection, increasing the signal to background ratio before image reconstruction. Images of the measured prompt gamma distributions are reconstructed by means of a spectral reconstruction code, through which the 4.439 MeV spectral line is resolved. Images of the emission distribution at this energy are reconstructed, allowing calculation of the distal fall-off and identification of target displacements of 3 mm.

A high-resolution PET system, which incorporates a silicon detector probe into a conventional PET scanner, has been proposed to obtain increased image quality in a limited region of interest. Detailed simulation studies have previously shown that the additional probe information improves the spatial resolution of the reconstructed image and increases lesion detectability, with no cost to other image quality measures. The current study expands on the previous work by using a laboratory prototype of the silicon PET-probe system to examine the resolution improvement in an experimental setting. Two different versions of the probe prototype were assessed, both consisting of a back-to-back pair of 1-mm thick silicon pad detectors, one arranged in 32 × 16 arrays of 1.4 mm × 1.4 mm pixels and the other in 40 × 26 arrays of 1.0 mm × 1.0 mm pixels. Each detector was read out by a set of VATAGP7 ASICs and a custom-designed data acquisition board which allowed trigger and data interfacing with the PET scanner, itself consisting of BGO block detectors segmented into 8 × 6 arrays of 6 mm × 12 mm × 30 mm crystals. Limited-angle probe data was acquired from a group of Na-22 point-like sources in order to observe the maximum resolution achievable using the probe system. Data from a Derenzo-like resolution phantom was acquired, then scaled to obtain similar statistical quality as that of previous simulation studies. In this case, images were reconstructed using measurements of the PET ring alone and with the inclusion of the probe data. Images of the Na-22 source demonstrated a resolution of 1.5 mm FWHM in the probe data, the PET ring resolution being approximately 6 mm. Profiles taken through the image of the Derenzo-like phantom showed a clear increase in spatial resolution. Improvements in peak-to-valley ratios of 50% and 38%, in the 4.8 mm and 4.0 mm phantom features respectively, were observed, while previously unresolvable 3.2 mm features were brought to light by the addition of the probe. These results support the possibility of improving the image resolution of a clinical PET scanner using the silicon PET-probe.

A Compton telescope for dose monitoring in hadron therapy is under development at IFIC. The system consists of three layers of LaBr3 crystals coupled to silicon photomultiplier arrays. 22Na sources have been successfully imaged reconstructing the data with an ML-EM code. Calibration and temperature stabilization are necessary for the prototype operation at low coincidence rates. Random coincidences degrade the image in Positron Emission Tomography, PET. To compensate for their degradation effects, the rate of random coincidences should be estimated. Under certain circumstances, current estimation methods fail to provide accurate results. We propose a novel method, "Singles-Prompts" (SP), that includes the information conveyed by prompt coincidences and models the pile-up. The SP method has the same structure than the well-known "Singles Rate" (SR) approach. Hence, SP can straightforwardly replace SR. In this work, the SP method has been extensively assessed and compared to two conventional methods, SR and the delayed window (DW) method, in a preclinical PET scenario using Monte-Carlo simulations. SP offers accurate estimates for the randoms rates, while SR and DW tend to overestimate the rates (∼10%, and 5%, respectively). With pile-up, the SP method is more robust than SR (but less than DW). At the image level, the contrast is overestimated in SR-corrected images, +16%, while SP produces the correct value. Spill-over is slightly reduced using SP instead of SR. The DW images values are similar to those of SP except for low-statistic scenarios, where DW behaves as if randoms were not compensated for. In particular, the contrast is reduced, -16%. In general, the better estimations of SP translate into better image quality.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is based on the detection in coincidence of the two photons created in a positron annihilation. In conventional PET, this coincidence identification is usually carried out through a coincidence electronic unit. An accidental coincidence occurs when two photons arising from different annihilations are classified as a coincidence. Accidental coincidences are one of the main sources of image degradation in PET. Some novel systems allow coincidences to be selected post-acquisition in software, or in real time through a digital coincidence engine in an FPGA. These approaches provide the user with extra flexibility in the sorting process and allow the application of alternative coincidence sorting procedures. In this work a novel sorting procedure based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) techniques has been developed. It has been compared to a conventional coincidence sorting algorithm based on a time coincidence window. The data have been obtained from Monte-Carlo simulations. A small animal PET scanner has been implemented to this end. The efficiency (the ratio of correct identifications) can be selected for both methods. In one case by changing the actual value of the coincidence window used, and in the other by changing a threshold at the output of the neural network. At matched efficiencies, the ANN-based method always produces a sorted output with a smaller random fraction. In addition, two differential trends are found: the conventional method presents a maximum achievable efficiency, while the ANN-based method is able to increase the efficiency up to unity, the ideal value, at the cost of increasing the random fraction. Images reconstructed using ANN sorted data (no compensation for randoms) present better contrast, and those image features which are more affected by randoms are enhanced. International audience; A high resolution PET detector head for small animal PET applications has been developed. The detector is composed of a 12 mm x 12 mm source continuous LYSO crystal coupled to a 64-channel monolithic SiPM matrix from FBK-irst. Crystal thicknesses of 5 mm and 10 mm have been tested, both yielding an intrinsic spatial resolution around 0.7 mm FWHM with a position determination algorithm that can also provide depth-of-interaction information. The detectors have been tested in a rotating system that makes it possible to acquire tomographic data and reconstruct images of 22Na sources. An image reconstruction method specifically adapted for continuous crystals has been employed. The Full Width at Half Maximum measured from a point source reconstructed with ML-EM was 0.7 mm with the 5 mm crystal and 0.8 mm with the 10 mm crystal.

The Axial PET (AX-PET) concept proposes a novel detection geometry for PET, based on layers of long scintillating crystals axially aligned with the bore axis. Arrays of wavelength shifting (WLS) strips are placed orthogonally and underneath the crystal layers; both crystals and strips are individually readout by G-APDs. The axial coordinate is obtained from the WLS signals by means of a Center-of-Gravity method combined with a cluster algorithm. This design allows spatial resolution and sensitivity to be decoupled and thus simultaneously optimized. In this work we present the latest results obtained with the 2-module AX-PET scanner prototype, which consists of 6 radial layers of 8 LYSO crystals each (crystal size: 3 × 3 × 100 mm3). The WLS arrays comprise 26 strips (3-mm wide) per layer. The estimated energy resolution from point-like measurements is 11.8% (FWHM at 511 keV). The intrinsic spatial resolution was measured for the two modules in coincidence at two different configurations using point-like sources, showing very little degradation when the modules were placed oblique to each other. The axial spatial resolution was 1.5 mm (FWHM) in all the studied cases. Tomographic data of extended phantoms filled with fluorine-18 have been acquired. Imaging a larger transaxial Field-of-View (when compared to the previous measurement campaign) was possible thanks to implementing secondary motion of one of the modules. We have also developed various reconstruction approaches which take into account the particular nature of AX-PET data, as well as a count rate model which allowed us to develop an acquisition protocol able to compensate for count losses. The reconstructed phantom images confirm the imaging capabilities of AX-PET, and the recent advancements in the DAQ let us expect significant improvements for future campaigns.

OMEGA - Electronique; International audience; A small animal PET prototype with continuous LYSO crystals coupled to silicon photomultipliers has been developed and the first images have been reconstructed. The system consists of two detector heads attached to a rotating stage. Each detector head is composed of a 12mm x 12mm x 5mm crystal coupled to a monolithic silicon photomultiplier matrix. The matrix has 8x8 pixel elements of 1.4mm x 1.5mm size in a 1.5mm x 1.5mm pitch. Measurements have been carried out with two black crystals and two white crystals. Different position determination algorithms in continuous crystals are being tested to determine the interaction position in the detector heads. In addition, tests with pixellated crystal arrays of 64 pixels of 1.5mm x 1.5mm x 10mm size have been carried out in order to compare the imaging performance. Data have been taken with one and two Na-22 sources in different positions. Images have been reconstructed with filtered backprojection (FBP) and statistical iterative maximum likelihood methods.

Standard Positron Emission Tomography (PET) cameras need to reach a compromise between spatial resolution and sensitivity. To overcome this limitation we developed a novel concept of PET. Our AX-PET demonstrator is made of LYSO crystals aligned along the z coordinate (patient's axis) and WLS strips orthogonally placed with respect to the crystals. This concept offers full 3D localization of the photon interaction inside the camera. Thus the spatial resolution and the sensitivity can be simultaneously improved and the reconstruction of Compton interactions inside the detector is also possible. Moreover, by means of G-APDs for reading out the photons, both from LYSO and WLS, the detector is insensitive to magnetic fields and it is then suitable to be used in a combined PET/MRI apparatus. A complete Monte Carlo simulation and dedicated reconstruction software have been developed. The two final modules, each composed of 48 crystals and 156 WLS strips, have been built and fully characterized in a dedicated test set-up. The results, obtained with a 22 Na point source (0.25 mm diameter), of the single module performances and a first estimation of the performances with the two module system are reported.

The goal of the AX-PET project is to build and test a demonstrator for a high resolution, high sensitivity PET scanner, based on a novel geometrical concept of long axially oriented crystals. The demonstrator comprises two PET modules used in coincidence. The two modules have been constructed and characterized (both individually and in coincidence) in dedicated test setups, with point-like sources. Good performance in terms of energy, spatial and timing resolution have been demonstrated. First measurements with extended phantoms filled with FDG-radiotracers have been recently performed.

The AX-PET is a new geometrical concept for a high resolution 3D PET scanner, based on matrices of axially oriented LYSO crystals interleaved by stacks of WLS, both individually read out by G-APDs. A PET demonstrator, based on two detector modules used in coincidence, is currently under construction.

We describe the concept and first experimental tests of a novel 3D axial Positron Emission Tomography (PET) geometry. It allows for a new way of measuring the interaction point in the detector with very high precision. It is based on a matrix of long Lutetium-Yttrium OxyorthoSilicate (LYSO) crystals oriented in the axial direction, each coupled to one Geiger Mode Avalanche Photodiode (G-APD) array. To derive the axial coordinate, Wave Length Shifter (WLS) strips are mounted orthogonally and interleaved between the crystals. The light from the WLS strips is read by custom-made G-APDs. The weighted mean of the signals in the WLS strips has proven to give very precise axial resolution. The achievable resolution along the three axes is mainly driven by the dimensions of the LYSO crystals and WLS strips. This concept is inherently free of parallax errors. Furthermore, it will allow identification of Compton interactions in the detector and for reconstruction of a fraction of them, which is expected to enhance image quality and sensitivity. We present the results of proof-of-principle tests and qualification measurements of the various components prepared to build a larger scale demonstrator consisting of two matrices of 8×6 LYSO crystals and 312 WLS strips., We would like to thank T. We analyze the viability of the Zee-Babu model as an explanation of observed neutrino masses and mixings and the possibility that the model is confirmed or discarded in experiments planned for the very close future. The allowed parameter space is studied analytically by using some approximations and partial data. Then, a complete scanning of all parameters and constraints is performed numerically by using Monte Carlo methods. The cleanest signal of the model will be the detection of the doubly charged scalar at the LHC and its correlation with measurements of the branching ratio of $\mu\to e\gamma$ at the MEG experiment. In addition, the model offers interesting predictions for $\tau^{-}\to\mu^{+}\mu^{-}\mu^{-}$ experiments, lepton-hadron universality tests, the $\theta_{13}$ mixing in neutrino oscillations and the $_{ee}$ parameter of neutrinoless double beta decay., Comment: 50 pages, 18 figures. We critically revisit the issue of power-law running in models with extra dimensions. We critically revisit the issue of power-law running in models with extra dimensions. The analysis is carried out in the context of a higher-dimensional extension of QED, with the extra dimensions compactified on a torus. It is shown that a naive $\beta$ function, which simply counts the number of modes, depends crucially on the way the thresholds of the Kaluza-Klein modes are crossed. To solve these ambiguities we turn to the vacuum polarization, which, due to its special unitarity properties, guarantees the physical decoupling of the heavy modes. This latter quantity, calculated in the context of dimensional regularization, is used for connecting the low energy gauge coupling with the coupling of the $D$-dimensional effective field theory. We find that the resulting relation contains only logarithms of the relevant scales, and no power corrections. If, instead, hard cutoffs are used to regularize the theory, one finds power corrections, which could be interpreted as an additional matching between the effective higher-dimensional model and some unknown, more complete theory. The possibility of estimating this matching is examined in the context of a toy model. The general conclusion is that, in the absence of any additional physical principle, the power corrections depend strongly on the details of the underlying theory. We study an extension of the standard model with one latticized extra dimension accessible to all fields. The model is characterized by the size of the extra dimension and the number of sites, and contains a tower of massive particles. At energies lower than the mass of the new particles there are no tree-level effects. Therefore, bounds on the scale of new physics can only be set from one-loop processes. We calculate several observables sensitive to loop-effects, such as the $\rho$ parameter, $b\to s \gamma$, $Z\to b\bar b$, and the $B^0\rightleftharpoons\bar{B}^0$ mixing, and use them to set limits on the lightest new particles for different number of sites. It turns out that the continuous result is rapidly reached when the extra dimension is discretized in about 10 to 20 sites only. For small number of sites the bounds placed on the usual continuous scenario can be reduced by roughly a factor of 10%--25%, which means that the new particles can be as light as $320 {GeV}$. Finally, we briefly discuss an alternative model in which fermions do not have additional modes., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures
