In this work, the efficiency of two horizontal-axis hydrokinetic turbines, whose blades were designed with and without multi-element hydrofoil cross-sections, has been numerical and experimentally investigated for tip speed ratio (λ) values ranging between 2.5 and 9.0 to compare the experimental rotor performance with numerical results. The Eppler 420 hydrofoil was used for the design of the blades applying the blade element momentum (BEM) theory. The variation of the power coefficient curve of the turbines was analyzed by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental tests through ANSYs Fluent software with six-degrees of freedom (6-DoF) user-defined function (UDF) method and an open hydraulic channel, respectively. Numerically, for the turbine with a multi-element hydrofoil and without a multi-element (traditional) hydrofoil, maximum power coefficients (CPmax) of 0.5050 and 0.419 (at a λ value equal to 7.129 and 6.739, respectively) were obtained. It is worth noting that a reasonable agreement between the numerical and the experimental results was achieved. In this regard, the blade with a multi-element hydrofoil has a positive influence on the hydrokinetic turbine performance; therefore, it can be used for power generation in river or marine systems.

Introduction: Agriculture is the largest user of water globally (i.e., 70% of freshwater use) and within the United States (i.e., 42% of freshwater use); irrigation ensures crops receive adequate water, thereby increasing crop yields. Surfactants have been used in various agricultural spray products to increase spray stability and alter droplet sizes.Methods: The effects of the addition of surfactant (0.1 wt% Surfactin; surface tension of 29.2 mN/m) to distilled water (72.79 mN/m) on spray dynamics and droplet formation were investigated in four flat fan (206.8–413.7 kPa), one full cone (137.9–413.7 kPa), and three LEPA bubbler (41.4–103.4 kPa) nozzles via imaging.Results and discussion: The flat fan and cone nozzles experienced second wind-induced breakup (i.e., unstable wavelengths drive breakup) of the liquid sheets exiting the nozzle; the addition of surfactant resulted in an increased breakup length and a decreased droplet size. The fan nozzles volumetric median droplet diameter decreased with the addition of surfactant (e.g., decreased by 26.3–65.6 μm in one nozzle). The full cone nozzle volumetric median droplet diameter decreased initially with the addition of surfactant (27.8, 14.3, and 13.4 μm at 137.9, 206.8, and 310.3 kPa respectively), but increased at 413.7 kPa (24.3 μm). Sprays from the bubbler nozzles were measured and observed to experience Rayleigh (i.e., the droplets form via capillary pinching at the end of the jet) and first wind-induced breakup (i.e., air impacts breakup along with capillary pinching). The effect of Surfactin on droplet size was minimal for the 41.4 kPa bubbler nozzle. The addition of surfactant increased the diameter of the jet or ligament formed from the bubbler plate, thereby increasing the breakup length and the droplet size at 68.9 and 103.4 kPa (droplet size increased by 750.6 and 4,462.7 μm, respectively).

The current status of water resources in the U.S. Central High Plains necessitates adopting water conservation practices to move toward a sustainable agricultural economy. Identifying proper irrigation scheduling techniques is a conservative practice to maintain the sustainability of the agricultural systems. However, conducting field experiments is time and money consuming. Thus, the utilization of crop models, such as AquaCrop, could be a convenient alternative to field experiments. The FAO AquaCrop model was calibrated and validated for simulating forage sorghum yield response to various deficit irrigation conditions in a semi-arid region. Afterwards, the model was used to investigate the efficiency of the pre-season and in-season irrigation scheduling scenarios. In this study, the soil water status at the planting time was considered as the indicator of the pre-season irrigation level. Therefore, the pre-season irrigation scenarios were arranged as the replenishment of soil water deficiency at the time of planting at up to 30, 50, and 100% of the soil’s total available water for the first 60 cm of soil depth and the same replenishment levels for the entire crop root zone (150 cm soil depth). Then, AquaCrop long-term (37 years) simulations of forage sorghum biomass and irrigation water use efficiency reactions to three levels of maximum allowable depletion (MAD) (40, 55, and 70%) were compared to three fixed irrigation interval (4, 6, and 10 days) scenarios by considering six pre-season irrigation conditions (36 scenarios). The scenarios analysis found the 10-day irrigation interval and the MAD levels of 55% and 70% to be the most efficient irrigation scheduling strategies if combined with pre-season irrigation that brought the crop root zone (0–150 cm soil depth) to field capacity. Moreover, the 40% MAD application was the least efficient strategy. This study’s outputs can be a baseline for establishing forage sorghum irrigation scheduling in the U.S. Central High Plains. However, exploring the interactions of irrigation scheduling strategies with other irrigation and agronomic practices, such as salinity management and fertilizer application, is highly recommended.

Variable rate irrigation (VRI) requires accurate knowledge of crop water demands at the sub-field level. Existing VRI practices commonly use one or more variables like soil electrical conductivity, historical yields, and topographic maps to delineate variable rate zones. However, these data sets do not quantify within season variability in crop water demands. Crop coefficients are widely used to help estimate evapotranspiration (ET) at different stages of a crop’s growth cycle, and past research has shown how remotely sensed data can identify differences in crop coefficients at regional and field levels. However, the amount of spatial and temporal variation in crop coefficients at the sub-field level (i.e. within a single center pivot system) has not been widely researched. This study aims to compare sub-field ET estimates from two remote sensing platforms and quantify spatial and temporal variations in aggregated sub-field level ET. Vegetation indices and reference ET data were collected at Kansas State University’s Southwest Research Extension Center (SWREC) and two Water Technology Farms during the 2020 corn growing season. Weekly maps of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) from aerial imagery are combined with empirical equations from existing literature to estimate both basal and combined crop coefficients at a 1-meter resolution. These ET estimates are aggregated to a 30 m resolution and compared to the Landsat Provisional Actual ET dataset. Finally, actual ET estimates from aerial images were aggregated using k-means clustering and stationary variable speed zones to determine if there is enough variation in actual ET at the sub-field level to build variable rate irrigation schedules. An equivalence test demonstrated that the aerial imagery and Landsat data sources produce significantly different crop coefficient estimates. However, the two datasets were moderately correlated with Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficients ranging from -0.95 to 0.86. Both the aerial imaging and Landsat datasets showed high variability in crop coefficients during the first 5-6 weeks after emergence, with these coefficients becoming more spatially uniform later in the growing season. These crop coefficients may help irrigators make more informed irrigation management decisions during the growing season. However, more research is needed to validate these remotely sensed ET estimates and integrate them into an irrigation decision support system.

Soil salinization is one of the significant concerns regarding irrigation with saline waters as an alternative resource for limited freshwater resources in arid and semi-arid regions. Thus, the investigation of proper management methods to control soil salinity for irrigation with saline waters is inevitable. The HYDRUS-1D model is a well-known numerical model that can facilitate the exploration of management scenarios to mitigate the consequences of irrigation with saline waters, especially soil salinization. However, before using the model as a decision support system, it is crucial to calibrate the model and analyze the model’s parameters and outputs’ uncertainty. Therefore, the generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE) algorithm was implemented for the HYDRUS-1D model in the R environment to calibrate the model and assess the uncertainty aspects for simulating soil salinity of corn root zone under saline irrigation with linear move sprinkle irrigation system. The results of the study have detected a lower level of uncertainty in the α, n, and θs (saturated soil water content) parameters of water flow simulations, dispersivity (λ), and adsorption isotherm coefficient (Kd) parameters of solute transport simulations comparing to the other parameters. A higher level of uncertainty was found for the diffusion coefficient as its corresponding posterior distribution was not considerably changed from its prior distribution. The reason for this phenomenon could be the minor contribution of diffusion to the solute transport process in the soil compared with advection and hydrodynamic dispersion under saline water irrigation conditions. Predictive uncertainty results revealed a lower level of uncertainty in the model outputs for the initial growth stages of corn. The analysis of the predictive uncertainty band also declared that the uncertainty in the model parameters was the predominant source of uncertainty in the model outputs. In addition, the excellent performance of the calibrated model based on 50% quantiles of the posterior distributions of the model parameters was observed in terms of simulating soil water content (SWC) and electrical conductivity of soil water (ECsw) at the corn root zone. The ranges of NRMSE for SWC and ECsw simulations at different soil depths were 0.003 to 0.01 and 0.09 to 0.11, respectively. The results of this study have demonstrated the authenticity of the GLUE algorithm to seek uncertainty aspects and calibration of the HYDRUS-1D model to simulate the soil salinity at the corn root zone at field scale under a linear move irrigation system.

Utilizing degraded quality waters such as saline water as irrigation water with proper management methods such as leaching application is a potential answer to water scarcity in agricultural systems. Leaching application requires understanding the relationship between the amount of irrigation water and its quality with the dynamic of salts in the soil. The HYDRUS-1D model can simulate the dynamic of soil salinity under saline water irrigation conditions. However, these simulations are subject to uncertainty. A study was conducted to assess the uncertainty of the HYDRUS-1D model parameters and outputs to simulate the dynamic of salts under saline water irrigation conditions using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) based Metropolis-Hastings algorithm in the R-Studio environment. Results indicated a low level of uncertainty in parameters related to the advection term (water movement simulation) and water stress reduction function for root water uptake in the solute transport process. However, a higher level of uncertainty was detected for dispersivity and diffusivity parameters, possibly because of the study’s scale or some error in initial or boundary conditions. The model output (predictive) uncertainty showed a high uncertainty in dry periods compared to wet periods (under irrigation or rainfall). The uncertainty in model parameters was the primary source of total uncertainty in model predictions. The implementation of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm for the HYDRUS-1D was able to conveniently estimate the residual water content (θr) value for the water simulation processes. The model’s performance in simulating soil water content and soil water electrical conductivity (ECsw) was good when tested with the 50% quantile of the posterior distribution of the parameters. Uncertainty assessment in this study revealed the effectiveness of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm in exploring uncertainty aspects of the HYDRUS-1D model for reproducing soil salinity dynamics under saline water irrigation at a field scale.

La resistencia a la cavitación es un requerimiento importante en el diseño de turbinas hidrocinéticas para aplicaciones marinas o fluviales dado que se ha demostrado que la cavitación puede contribuir al desgaste, corrosión, vibración y fatiga de los álabes de la turbina. La presencia de cavitación en los álabes puede conducir a la disminución del rendimiento de la turbina y la reducción de su vida útil. Por lo tanto, es fundamental incluir un estudio de cavitación en el análisis y desarrollo de los sistemas hidrocinéticos. En este trabajo, se presentan los elementos a tener en cuenta en un estudio de cavitación de los álabes de las turbinas hidrocinéticas. Como criterio para determinar la ocurrencia de cavitación, se presentó la comparación entre la distribución del coeficiente de presión ( ) sobre el perfil hidrodinámico Eppler 420 y el número de cavitación ( ). El fue calculado mediante simulación numérica usando el software Ansys Fluent. Los resultados mostraron que el perfil hidrodinámico Eppler 420 podría ser empleado para el diseño de los álabes de turbinas hidrocinéticas.

En este trabajo se presenta el dimensionamiento de los álabes de una turbina hidrocinética de 1 kW con 3 álabes con perfiles hidrodinámicos multielemento. Para ello, se implementó la teoría de Elemento de Álabe (BEM, por sus siglas en inglés). Se utilizó el perfil hidrodinámico Eppler 420 y se diseñó la turbina a partir de una velocidad de la corriente de agua de 1,5 m/s, con una relación de velocidad de punta de álabe ( ) de 6,325, un ángulo de paso de la sección del álabe ( ) de 0°, un coeficiente de potencia de 0,4382 y una eficiencia mecánica del 70%. Para el diseño del álabe, se eligió el perfil Eppler 420 multielemento, por presentar una elevada relación entre el coeficiente de elevación y arrastre. Se llevó a cabo un estudio de computación 2D en el código JavaFoil del perfil Eppler 420, con el fin de determinar la longitud de las cuerdas del elemento principal y de la solapa posterior (flap) óptima para un ángulo de deflexión del flap de 30° en condiciones de un bajo número de Reynolds.

Anecdotal accounts regarding reduced US cropping system diversity have raised concerns about negative impacts of increasingly homogeneous cropping systems. However, formal analyses to document such changes are lacking. Using US Agriculture Census data, which are collected every five years, we quantified crop species diversity from 1978 to 2012, for the contiguous US on a county level basis. We used Shannon diversity indices expressed as effective number of crop species (ENCS) to quantify crop diversity. We then evaluated changes in county-level crop diversity both nationally and for each of the eight Farm Resource Regions developed by the National Agriculture Statistics Service. During the 34 years we considered in our analyses, both national and regional ENCS changed. Nationally, crop diversity was lower in 2012 than in 1978. However, our analyses also revealed interesting trends between and within different Resource Regions. Overall, the Heartland Resource Region had the lowest crop diversity whereas the Fruitful Rim and Northern Crescent had the highest. In contrast to the other Resource Regions, the Mississippi Portal had significantly higher crop diversity in 2012 than in 1978. Also, within regions there were differences between counties in crop diversity. Spatial autocorrelation revealed clustering of low and high ENCS and this trend became stronger over time. These results show that, nationally counties have been clustering into areas of either low diversity or high diversity. Moreover, a significant trend of more counties shifting to lower rather than to higher crop diversity was detected. The clustering and shifting demonstrates a trend toward crop diversity loss and attendant homogenization of agricultural production systems, which could have far-reaching consequences for provision of ecosystem system services associated with agricultural systems as well as food system sustainability.

Purpose: Stroke is the leading cause of disability in adults worldwide, with hemiparesis being the most prevalent consequence. The use of video games and movement sensors could contribute to improving patients’ chances of recovery. We performed a supervised pilot study to validate the safety, feasibility, and acceptability of a new virtual rehabilitation platform in patients with chronic post-stroke upper limb hemiparesis. Methods: The participants (n = 9) participated in 40 rehabilitation sessions, twice a week, for a period of 20 weeks. Their experiences with the platform were documented using a Likert-scale survey. Changes in motor function were evaluated using the Chedoke Arm and Hand Activity Inventory (CAHAI) and the Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT). Results and conclusions: All participants expressed that they enjoyed the experience and felt comfortable using the platform. Preliminary results showed significant motor recovery ( P = .0039) according to the WMFT scores. Patients with significant impairment showed no improvement in upper limb task-oriented motor function after therapy. The new platform is safe and well-accepted by patients. The improvement in motor function observed in some of the participants should be attributed to the therapy since spontaneous functional recovery is not expected in chronic stroke patients.
