This Geostandards and Geoanalytical Research Bibliographic Review 2022 presents an overview of a wide range of publications in 2022 focusing on the characterisation of new geoanalytical reference materials (RMs) as well as studies which published measurement results for established RMs. The development of highly accurate new methods and techniques leads to large new analytical data sets for RMs with improved accuracy and precision, which we present in this review. Ba/Cashell, Mo/Cashell, and Li/Cashell chronologies of Pecten maximus can provide information on past phytoplankton dynamics. Distinct Ba, Mo, and Li peaks in the shells are associated with algal blooms. This study evaluated the underlying hypothesis that respective element profiles reliably record variations in phytoplankton dynamics occurring within the water column. Therefore, the chemical content of scallops from the Bay of Brest, France, that lived on the sediment surface was compared to conspecific specimens living in a cage above the seafloor and compared with the phytoplankton abundance and the physicochemical properties of the water column. As demonstrated, Ba/Cashell and Mo/Cashell peaks occurred contemporaneously in specimens within the cage and on the sediment, but were higher in the latter. Furthermore, element/Ca peaks agreed with the timing of particulate Ba and Mo enrichments in the seawater. These data support the assumption of a dietary uptake of both elements. Differences in peak heights between shells living in a cage and on the seafloor were controlled by rates of filtration and biomineralization. While the timing and magnitude of Ba/Cashell peaks were linked to Ba‐containing diatoms, Mo/Cashell peaks were related to blooms of Mo‐enriched dinoflagellate and diatom aggregation events. Two episodes of slight Li enrichment occurred synchronously in cage and sediment shells. Although the exact mechanism causing such Li increases remains unresolved, the findings suggest a link to large diatom blooms or the presence of a specific diatom taxon. Precise and accurate determination of major components in alkali silicate glasses provides critical information concerning element distribution, petrogenesis and magmatic evolution. However, as one of the most important in situ microanalytical technologies, the application of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) was limited by the time-dependent loss of X-ray intensity of alkali ions (especially Na) during electron beam bombardment on alkali silicate glasses. In this study, an optimized analytical method was developed using a JEOL JXA 8100 EPMA, aiming to get a long enough incubation duration suitable for accurate analysis of major element mass fractions. The optimal analytical conditions were determined as follows: 15 kV accelerating voltage, 2 nA beam current, 20 μm beam diameter, 40 s peak counting time, Na and K analyzed with top priority, time-saving mode with no additional detector movement and no peak search functioned. The availability of this low beam current density condition (6.37 × 10−3 nA μm−2) to 24 anhydrous reference glasses, with their compositions covering the entire spectrum from the ultramafic to highly siliceous range, was verified by the good agreement of the EPMA measured data with their GeoReM preferred values. Similarly, the methodology presented here is also suitable for analysis of hydrous glasses with H2O contents up to approximately 9 wt%, accompanied by no obvious Na loss found and no complicated mathematical corrections needed, and therefore can be used for the estimation of H2O contents in H2O-rich (>1 wt%) geological glasses by the difference method. Despite its analytical accuracy and precision (>0.5 wt%) not better than those of SIMS and FTIR, EPMA can be used as a substitute technique for H2O determination with its main advantages of excellent spatial resolution (down to 5–10 μm) and analytical convenience, especially for small melt inclusions or tiny experimental quench products, and the case with no appropriate calibration standards or no reported extinction coefficients available for those compositions of interest. In daily application, our optimized method is low cost and easy to implement and can achieve comparable precision and detection limits with acceptable efficiency (∼4–5 min/point for ten major elements) relative to routine analysis conditions. As part of the HIPPO (HIgh-resolution Primary Production multi-prOxy archives) project, environmental monitoring was carried out between March and October 2021 in the Bay of Brest. The aim of this survey was to better understand the processes which drive the incorporation of chemical elements into scallop shells and their links with phytoplankton dynamics. For this purpose, biological samples (scallops and phytoplankton) as well as water samples were collected in order to analyze various environmental parameters (element chemical properties, nutrients, chlorophyll a , etc.). Given the large number of parameters that were measured, only the major results are presented and discussed here. However, the whole dataset, which has been made available, is much larger and can potentially be very useful for other scientists performing sclerochronological investigations, studying biogeochemical cycles or conducting various ecological research projects. Two stalagmites from B7-Cave in northwest Germany, which is part of the same cave system as the intensively studied Bunker Cave, were re-dated by multi collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) 230Th/U-dating. Furthermore, the concentration of Mg, Sr, Ba, P, Y, Zn, and Al were determined at high-resolution by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Stalagmite B7-1 grew from 10.8 to 5.8 ka BP. Stalagmite B7-7 grew during three growth phases from 11.0 to 6.2, 3.13 to 2.86 (late Bronze Age), and 1.27 to 1.15 ka BP (early Medieval Period). Aluminium is a proxy for detrital material and corresponds very well with the visible detrital layers in stalagmite B7-1 and the oldest growth phase of stalagmite B7-7. The two younger growth phases of stalagmite B7-7 are very clean and show very low Al concentrations. Phosphorus, Y, and Zn show positive correlations in both stalagmites and all growth phases, but do not show a relationship to temperature or precipitation. This may be related to the elevated detrital content in both stalagmites. Barium and Sr also show a positive correlation in both stalagmites and all growth phases, which is related to their dependency on growth rate. Magnesium is most probably influenced by prior calcite precipitation and therefore a proxy for past precipitation/infiltration. The Mg records of stalagmite B7-1 and of the oldest growth phase of stalagmite B7-7 show decreasing Mg concentration with time reflecting decreasing prior calcite precipitation and therefore increasing precipitation during the Early to Mid-Holocene. Three natural geological glasses (andesitic glass OJY‐1, and rhyolitic obsidians OH‐1 and OA‐1) of specimen sizes 50–150 g were characterised as reference materials for in situ microanalysis of major and trace elements, and Pb isotope ratios. Utilised techniques include isotope‐dilution analyses by TIMS and MC‐ICP‐MS, bulk analyses by XRF, ICP‐OES, ICP‐MS, and microanalysis (10–120 μm spot size) by electron probe microanalyser, LA‐ICP‐MS and LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS. Microanalyses (10–120 μm) indicate that all three glasses are homogeneous with respect to fifty‐four out of fifty‐eight determined elements and Pb isotope ratios, except for Ni in OJY‐1, and Cu, Zr and Ce in OH‐1. The determination of reference values as well as their uncertainties at the 95% confidence level closely followed International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guidelines and the certification protocol of the International Association of Geoanalysts (IAG). These three glasses are fully natural without any subsequent heat treatment, and they represent useful additions to the widely distributed MPI‐DING, USGS and CGSG reference glasses for microanalytical techniques such as electron probe microanalysis, μ‐XRF, LA‐ICP‐MS and SIMS. Recycling of oceanic crust through subduction, mantle upwelling, and remelting in mantle plumes is a widely accepted mechanism to explain ocean island volcanism (1). The timescale of this recycling is important to our understanding of mantle circulation rates. Correlations of uranogenic lead isotopes in lavas from ocean islands such as Hawaii or Iceland, when interpreted as model isochrons, have yielded source differentiation ages between 1 and 2.5 billion years (Gyr) (2-5). However, if such correlations are produced by mixing of unrelated mantle components (6) they will have no direct age significance. Re-Os decay model ages take into account the mixing of sources with different histories (7,8), but they depend on the assumed initial Re/Os ratio of the subducted crust, which is poorly constrained because of the high mobility of rhenium during subduction (9). Here we report the first data on [sup.87]Sr/[sup.86]Sr ratios for 138 melt inclusions in olivine phenocrysts from lavas of Mauna Loa shield volcano, Hawaii, indicating enormous mantle source heterogeneity. We show that highly radiogenic strontium in severely rubidium-depleted melt inclusions matches the isotopic composition of 200-650-Myr-old sea water. We infer that such sea water must have contaminated the Mauna Loa source rock, before subduction, imparting a unique 'time stamp' on this source. Small amounts of seawater-derived strontium in plume sources may be common but can be identified clearly only in ultra-depleted melts originating from generally highly (incompatible-element) depleted source components. The presence of 200-650-Myr-old oceanic crust in the source of Hawaiian lavas implies a timescale of general mantle circulation with an average rate of about 2 ([+ or -]1) cm [yr.sup.-1], much faster than previously thought., Melt inclusions in highly magnesian olivine are commonly used as proxies for parental melts (10). Phytoplankton dynamics in coastal ecosystems is increasingly altered by land‐based human activities. Yet, this global vision conceals major disparities, among sites and through time. As conventional monitoring time series are quite sparse and relatively short, biological records of environmental variability appear as relevant tools to gain insights into phytoplankton dynamics over larger temporal and spatial scales. Here, we present results of an interdisciplinary project dealing with chemical information archived in shells of Pecten maximus (Bivalvia; Pectinidae), known to form daily growth striae on its shell surface. Several individuals were collected in the Bay of Brest (France) in 2011 and 2012, and analyzed for the molybdenum and lithium concentrations in their soft tissues and the element‐to‐calcium ratios (Mo : Ca and Li : Ca) in their calcitic striae. All shells revealed high synchrony and reproducibility in their Mo : Ca and Li : Ca profiles, characterized with a major peak at the end of May and in mid‐June 2011, respectively. Detailed analysis of physical, chemical, and biological variables measured in seawater during an extensive 9‐month environmental survey enabled a meticulous description of phytoplankton dynamics in 2011 and its impact on shell geochemistry. Main findings strongly suggest that (1) the timing of Mo : Ca peaks reflects the occurrence of silicon limitation and diatom aggregation periods, (2) the height of these peaks relates to the amplitude of the first spring diatom bloom, and (3) Li : Ca serves as a proxy for the temporal dynamics of diatom biovolume and of biogenic silica recycling at the sediment–water interface. To expand the newly developed ARM glasses as reference materials for in situ microanalysis of isotope ratios and iron oxidation state by a variety of techniques such as SIMS, LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS and EPMA, we report Li‐B‐Si‐O‐Mg‐Sr‐Nd‐Hf‐Pb isotope data and Fe2+/ΣFe ratios for these glasses. The data were mainly obtained by TIMS, MC‐ICP‐MS, IR‐MS and wet‐chemistry colorimetric techniques. The quality of these data was cross‐checked by comparing different techniques or by comparing the results from different laboratories using the same technique. All three glasses appear to be homogeneous with respect to the investigated isotope ratios (except for B in ARM‐3) and Fe2+/ΣFe ratios at the scale of sampling volume and level of the analytical precision of each technique. The homogeneity of Li‐B‐O‐Nd‐Pb isotope ratios at the microscale (30–120 μm) was estimated using LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS and SIMS techniques. We also present new EPMA major element data obtained using three different instruments for the glasses. The determination of reference values for the major elements and their uncertainties at the 95% confidence level closely followed ISO guidelines and the Certification Protocol of the International Association of Geoanalysts. Amphistegina are common larger benthic foraminifer in coral reefs, with a nearly circumtropical distribution, and are major contributors to the CaCO3 budget of shallow marine environments. The family Amphisteginidae is dominant in Cenozoic carbonates. However, its potential as a proxy for paleoclimate reconstruction has not been completely explored. The intratest variability in trace elements of Amphistegina lessonii has been investigated using femtosecond‐laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (fs‐LA‐ICP‐MS). We collected and analyzed adult specimens of A. lessonii in September 2003, November 2003, January 2004, and March 2004, from ∼2 m water depth in the coral reefs of Akajima, Okinawa, Japan. Tests of A. lessonii from these four collections were analyzed for Mg/Ca of the septa to observe Test Size‐Lifespan relationships. The lifespan of a specimen of A. lessonii of 1,200 µm in diameter is estimated at ∼3 and ∼2 months for specimens 900 µm in size. Over the estimated lifespans, Mg/Ca of individual specimens of A. lessonii is highly variable and displays co‐variation with temperature and tidal heights. Future projects may apply and further test this approach for the reconstruction of the tropical shallow marine paleoenvironments. Plain Language Summary: Larger Benthic Foraminifera (LBF) have slow growth rates and can be used as a proxy to reconstruct seasonal variations in temperature. Amphistegina, a common genus of LBF found within the Cenozoic era including the past 55 million years, was sampled across four seasons from a modern coral reef of Okinawa, Japan. The trace element concentrations in nine specimens of A. lessonii were measured using femtosecond LA‐ICP‐MS. The intratest variation in Mg/Ca covaried with tidal heights and seawater temperature, assuming the ages of the specimens to be 2–3 months. We provide a temperature calibration equation for A. lessonii for reconstructing paleotemperatures of shallow marine environments of the Cenozoic. We conducted rock varnish measurements at four rock art sites in north‐western Saudi Arabia, including Kilwa and the Camel Site near Sakaka. We determined the areal densities of Mn and Fe in rock varnish that had accumulated on petroglyph surfaces since their creation, complemented by a detailed analysis of varnish samples. We inferred varnish accumulation rates by relating the Mn areal density on inscriptions to their ages estimated based on the type of script used. Applying these rates to the varnish densities on the rock art indicated that the art was produced during two distinct periods, corresponding to the Pre‐Pottery/Late Neolithic and the Bronze/Iron Age, respectively, with different artistic traditions, reflecting distinct socioeconomic and ecological conditions. Our dating approach, while admittedly burdened with substantial uncertainties, yields ages consistent with archaeological and historical evidence and it provides a unique quantitative tool to obtain at least rough ages for otherwise undatable rock art.
