28. Following Leaders in Byzantine Multirobot Systems by Using Blockchain Technology.

Abstract

Interest in multirobot systems is rising rapidly both in academia and in industry. The use of multiple robots working in a coordinated way, rather than a single robot, has several advantages in a diverse range of applications. However, few studies have focused on operations in which robots can behave maliciously and alter the outcome of the collective mission. In this article, we present a set of Byzantine Follow The Leader (BFTL) problems, in which a subset of robots in the system shows unintended or inconsistent behavior (i.e., Byzantine robots). In the BFTL problems, leaders discover routes from their starting positions to specific destinations and guide the followers, while Byzantine robots try to hinder the leaders and mislead the followers. In this research, blockchain technology is used as a communication tool within multirobot systems, for leaders to broadcast directions to the whole group. We propose algorithms to tackle the BFTL problems, prove their correctness, and validate them in simulated experiments of realistic scenarios. Results show that the proposed algorithms mitigate the impact of Byzantine robots in multirobot systems conducting a BFTL mission. Our analysis provides minimum and maximum boundary calculations for important metrics including number of robots reaching their destination, number of steps taken, and weight requirements of the chain used during the mission. 31. Single-Dose del Nido Cardioplegia Compared With Standard Cardioplegia During Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting at a Veterans Affairs Hospital.

Abstract

Del Nido cardioplegic solution (DNC), used chiefly in pediatric patients, rapidly induces prolonged cardiac arrest during cardiac surgery. To determine whether surgical outcomes after coronary artery bypass grafting in a United States military veteran population differed when DNC was used instead of our standard Plegisol cardioplegia, we retrospectively reviewed 155 consecutive operations performed from July 2016 through June 2017. Del Nido cardioplegia was used to induce cardiac arrest in 70 patients, and Plegisol in 85. Compared with the Plegisol group, the DNC group had a shorter mean cardiopulmonary bypass time (96.8 vs 117 min; P <0.01) and aortic cross-clamp time (63.9 vs 71.7 min; P=0.02). On multiple linear regression, DNC use and number of bypasses performed were predictors of cardiopulmonary bypass time. The groups were similar in median number of bypasses performed, median time to extubation, intensive care unit stay, and total postoperative stay; however, the DNC group had a shorter mean operating room time (285.8 vs 364.5 min; P <0.01). Del Nido cardioplegia, number of bypasses, cardiopulmonary bypass time, and red blood cell transfusion were predictors of operating room time. Outcomes in the groups were similar for 30- and 180-day death, stroke, renal failure, ventilation time >48 hours, atrial fibrillation, tracheostomy, reintubation, and mechanical circulatory support. We conclude that single-dose DNC is safe, effective, and cost-effective for achieving cardiac arrest in U.S. veteran populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SOVA) is an unusual cardiac anomaly that is potentially fatal with rupture. It is often asymptomatic but has various presentations. We describe a case of a 67-year-old male who presented with atypical chest pain. Transthoracic echocardiogram and cardiac computed tomography scan confirmed a large SOVA complicated by thrombus formation and compression of the left atrium and left ventricular outflow tract. The patient successfully underwent a Bentall procedure--surgical aortic aneurysm repair with mechanical aortic valve conduit. We discuss several clinical decision-making branch points to highlight the complexity of managing this condition. Even in asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic patients with SOVA, surgery may be indicated if the aneurysm meets the criteria for size or has thrombus formation or compressive effects. Abstract

International audience; We show a detailed magneto-optical Kerr study at room temperature of well characterized epitaxial La0:7Sr0:3MnO3 (LSMO) thin lms grown onto (110) and (1 18) SrTiO3 substrates. The lms present a well-de ned uniaxial (two-fold) magnetic anisotropy ascribed to substrate-induced anisotropy. In particular, the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy in the(110)-oriented LSMO lms originates from the existence of elongated in-plane [001]-oriented structures. Similar elongated structures, parallel to the [110] crystallographic direction, are found for LSMO lms grown on (1 18) STO surfaces. In all lms, such a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is characterized by an easy axis lying along the elongated structures. Furthermore, the vectorial-resolved hysteresis loops as a function of the in-plane applied eld direction are interpreted in terms of rotation and propagation and nucleation of magnetic domains processes. Our results demonstrate the tailoring of magnetic anisotropy by exploiting the substrate-induced anisotropy in epitaxial thin films.

Abstract

Peer to peer (P2P) systems have moved from application specific architectures to a generic service oriented design philosophy. This raised interesting problems in connection with providing useful P2P middleware services capable of dealing with resource assignment and management in a large-scale, heterogeneous and unreliable environment. The slicing problem consists of partitioning a P2P network into $k$ groups (slices) of a given portion of the network nodes that share similar resource values. As the network is large and dynamic this partitioning is continuously updated without any node knowing the network size. In this paper, we propose the first algorithm to solve the slicing problem. We introduce the metric of slice disorder and show that the existing ordering algorithm cannot nullify this disorder. We propose a new algorithm that speeds up the existing ordering algorithm but that suffers from the same inaccuracy. Then, we propose another algorithm based on ranking that is provably convergent under reasonable assumptions. In particular, we notice experimentally that ordering algorithms suffer from resource-correlated churn while the ranking algorithm can cope with it. 44. Failure Detectors in Homonymous Distributed Systems (with an Application to Consensus).

Abstract

This paper is on homonymous distributed systems where processes are prone to crash failures and have no initial knowledge of the system membership (``homonymous'' means that several processes may have the same identifier). New classes of failure detectors suited to these systems are first defined. Among them, the classes $\HO$ and $\HS$ are introduced that are the homonymous counterparts of the classes $\Omega$ and $\Sigma$, respectively. (Recall that the pair $\langle \Omega, \Sigma\rangle$ defines the weakest failure detector to solve consensus.) Then, the paper shows how $\HO$ and $\HS$ can be implemented in homonymous systems without membership knowledge (under different synchrony requirements). Finally, two algorithms are presented that use these failure detectors to solve consensus in homonymous asynchronous systems where there is no initial knowledge of the membership. One algorithm solves consensus with $\langle \HO, \HS\rangle$, while the other uses only $\HO$, but needs a majority of correct processes. Observe that the systems with unique identifiers and anonymous systems are extreme cases of homonymous systems from which follows that all these results also apply to these systems. Interestingly, the new failure detector class $\HO$ can be implemented with partial synchrony, while the analogous class $\AO$ defined for anonymous systems can not be implemented (even in synchronous systems). Hence, the paper provides us with the first proof showing that consensus can be solved in anonymous systems with only partial synchrony (and a majority of correct processes).
