Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a devastating human malignancy with a poor survival outcome (5-year survival less than 10 %). In recent years, the regulatory roles of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in various types of cancers have been widely reported. Based on bioinformatics analysis, LINC01857 is shown to be highly expressed in PC tissue. Nevertheless, the role of LINC01857 in PC is limitedly reported. Hence, this study aimed to explore the effects of lncRNA LINC01857 on PC cell process and the related mechanism. Methods: RT-qPCR and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay were conducted to measure LINC01857 expression and distribution in PANC-1 and MIA PaCa-2 cells. Colony formation and wound healing assays as well as flow cytometry analyses were employed to estimate the proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of PC cells transfected with pcDNA3.1-LINC01857 or si-LINC01857 compared with the behavior of PC cells transfected with empty pcDNA3.1 vector (control) or si-negative control (NC). Furthermore, RNA pulldown and luciferase reporter assays were utilized to demonstrate the interaction of LINC01857 and miR-450b-5p or to validate the binding of miR-450b-5p and cell division cycle 42 effector protein 3 (CDC42EP3). Testicular choriocarcinoma is a relatively rare malignancy with a highly aggressive nature. Timely diagnosis and treatment can help prolong the survival of patients and even cure them. This case reports a 29-year-old male who presented to the clinic for a month with epigastric pain. On examination, a massive mass of approximately 9*10 cm could be palpated in the upper abdomen. When asked about his previous history, the patient only described a history of a right inguinal hernia that had been repaired 12 years earlier. The admission diagnosis was considered the retroperitoneal tumor, which was found to have metastasized to the liver and lungs after the completion of relevant tests. We then performed a CT-guided lune puncture biopsy on day 8 of admission. The biopsy pathology suggested metastatic cancer was considered. As the symptoms of tumor compression gradually worsened, we performed surgical treatment (retroperitoneal tumor resection + partial duodenal resection + enteroanastomosis) on day 13 of admission. The postoperative pathology was choriocarcinoma. We subsequently conducted a detailed inquiry with the patient’s family about his medical history and found a history of inguinal testicle. Through testicular ultrasound examination, it was preliminarily determined to be testicular choriocarcinoma (not yet pathologically confirmed). We wanted to start salvage chemotherapy as soon as possible after surgery. However, the patient’s postoperative condition was poor, with rapid progression of hepatopulmonary metastases and gradually increased thyrotoxicosis, and we started salvage chemotherapy (EP regimen: etoposide and cisplatin) on postoperative day 12. However, the patient was forced to stop due to a severe chemotherapy reaction and died of respiratory and cardiac arrest in the hospital. For male patients with retroperitoneal mass, the possibility of germ-cell neoplasm should first be excluded. By inquiring in detail about a history of cryptorchidism and in the initial days of hospitalization, testicular exploration, ultrasounds, and serum tumor markers (AFP, β-HCG) tests can be conducted to rule out the possibility of germ-cell neoplasm, thereby preventing misdiagnosis and treatment delays. If the clinical diagnosis is metastatic germ-cell tumor with severe symptoms of metastatic disease, surgery should never be used as the initial treatment.

Abstract Family with sequence similarity three member (FAM3) plays a crucial role in the malignant development of various cancers of human. However, there remains doubtful what specific role of FAM3 family genes in pan-cancer. Our study aimed to investigate the role of FAM3 family genes in prognosis, immune subtype, tumor immune microenvironment, stemness score, and anticancer drug sensitivity of pan-cancer. We obtained data from UCSC Xena GDC and CellMiner databases, and used them to study the correlation of the expression, survival, immune subtype, tumor microenvironment, stemness score, and anticancer drug sensitivity between FAM3 family genes with pan-cancer. Furthermore, we investigated the tumor cellular functions and clinical prognostic value FAMC3 in pancreatic cancer (PAAD) using cellular experiments and tissue microarray. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), transwell invasion, wound-healing and apoptosis assays were performed to study the effect of FAM3C on SW1990 cells’ proliferation, migration, invasion and apoptosis. Immunohistochemical staining was used to study the relationship between FAM3C expression and clinical characteristics of pancreatic cancer patients. The results revealed that FAM3 family genes are significantly differential expression in tumor and adjacent normal tissues in 7 cancers (CHOL, HNSC, KICH, LUAD, LUSC, READ, and STAD). The expression of FAM3 family genes were negatively related with the RNAss, and robust correlated with immune type, tumor immune microenvironment and drug sensitivity. The expression of FAM3 family genes in pan-cancers were significantly different in immune type C1 (wound healing), C2 (IFN-gamma dominant), C3 (inflammatory), C4 (lymphocyte depleted), C5 (immunologically quiet), and C6 (TGF-beta dominant). Meanwhile, overexpression FAM3C promoted SW1990 cells proliferation, migration, invasion and suppressed SW1990 cells apoptosis. While knockdown of FAM3C triggered opposite results. High FAM3C expression was associated with duodenal invasion, differentiation and liver metastasis. In summary, this study provided a new perspective on the potential therapeutic role of FAM3 family genes in pan-cancer. In particular, FAM3C may play an important role in the occurrence and progression of PAAD.

Abstract α-Tertiary aliphatic amides are key elements in organic molecules, which are abundantly present in natural products, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional organic materials. Enantioconvergent alkyl-alkyl bond-forming process is one of the most straightforward and efficient, yet highly challenging ways to build such stereogenic carbon centers. Herein, we report an enantioselective alkyl-alkyl cross-coupling between two different alkyl electrophiles to access α-tertiary aliphatic amides. With a newly-developed chiral tridentate ligand, two distinct alkyl halides were successfully cross-coupled together to forge an alkyl-alkyl bond enantioselectively under reductive conditions. Mechanistic investigations reveal that one alkyl halides exclusively undergo oxidative addition with nickel versus in-situ formation of alkyl zinc reagents from the other alkyl halides, rendering formal reductive alkyl-alkyl cross-coupling from easily available alkyl electrophiles without preformation of organometallic reagents.

Development of the rural low-carbon logistics industry has become the main factor affecting the rapid development of China’s rural economy. From the perspective of a low-carbon economy, based on the analysis of the development level of rural low-carbon logistics, this study uses the theory and method of spatial measurement to analyze the interactive effect of rural low-carbon logistics development and rural economic construction in 31 provinces of China from 2002 to 2019 and then analyzes the mechanism of different factors on rural economic development. The results show that China’s low-carbon rural logistics development provinces have an obvious geographical agglomeration trend. The main distribution characteristics of rural low-carbon logistics development in China’s provinces and regions are “high-high” clustering and “low-low” clustering. Second, there is a long-term and sustainable interaction between the development of China’s low-carbon rural logistics industry and rural economic growth. Third, the income of rural residents in the eastern, central, and western regions has an important positive impact on rural economic growth. In the eastern region, financial industry growth has the largest effect on rural economic growth. In the central region, per capita income and education level of farmers have the greatest impact on rural economic growth. In the western region, the increase in income is the most important factor influencing low-carbon logistics in rural economic growth.

Abstract Background & Aims Lymphocyte-C-reactive Protein Ratio (LCR) has been demonstrated as a promising new marker for predicting surgical and oncological outcomes in colorectal carcinoma (CRC). However, anastomotic leakage (AL) is also likely related to this inflammatory marker. Herein, we aimed to identify preoperative predictors of AL and build and develop a novel model able to identify patients at risk of developing AL. Methods We collected 858 patients with CRC undergoing elective radical operation between 2007 and 2018 at a single center were retrospectively reviewed. We performed univariable and multivariable analyses and built a multivariable model that predicts AL based on preoperative factors. Propensity adjustment was used to correct the bias introduced by non-random matching of the LCR. The model's performance was evaluated by using the area under the receiver operator characteristic curves (AUROCs), decision curve analysis (DCA), Brier scores, D statistics, and R2 values. Chiral aliphatic amine and alcohol derivatives are difficult to access due to the challenge to differentiate between spatially and electronically similar alkyl groups. Here the authors show a nickel-catalyzed enantioselective hydroalkylation of acyl enamines and enol esters with alkyl halides to afford enantioenriched α-branched aliphatic acyl amines and esters in good yields with excellent enantioselectivity.

To assess the role of honeysuckle in teleost, this study evaluated the effects of dietary honeysuckle extract on grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). The results indicated that dietary HE supplementation: (1) increased the microvillus length and muscular thickness of the intestinal epithelium; (2) enhanced the mRNA expression of claudin-c and occludin; (3) downregulated expression of ACC1, FAS, SREBP-1 and upregulated expression of CPT1, ATGL, HSL, LPL, PPAR-α, FXR in the intestinal tissue; (4) downregulated the mRNA level of NF-κB p65, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-8 and upregulated the mRNA level of IκB-α, IL-10; (5) increased the activities of AKP, ACP, T-AOC and trypsin and lipase in the intestine but decreased the MDA content; (6) significantly increased the abundances of Firmicutes at the phylum level and Lactobacillus and Fructobacillus at the genus level, but decreased the abundances of Bacteroidetes at the phylum level and Cetobacterium and Aeromonas at genus level; (7) increased the levels of SCFAs. In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that dietary supplementation with HE at an appropriate dose could strengthen the intestinal mucosal barrier, improve lipid metabolism and immunity, and reshape the intestinal microbiota of grass carp.

In sheep industry, hypothermia caused by insufficient brown adipose tissue (BAT) deposits is one of the major causes of lamb deaths. Enhancing the formation and function of BAT in neonatal lamb increases thermogenesis and hence reduces economic losses. The aim of the present study was to explore the effect and mechanism of melatonin on sheep brown adipocyte formation and function. Sheep brown adipocyte precursor cells (SBACs) isolated from perirenal BAT were treated with melatonin (1 and 10 nM). The SBACs subjected to melatonin exhibited a decreased proliferation ability, accompanied by down-regulated proliferating cell nuclear antigen, cyclin D1, and CDK4 protein contents in a melatonin dose-dependent manner. Melatonin promoted brown adipocyte formation and induced the expression of brown adipogenic markers, including uncoupling protein 1 and PR domain-containing 16 during differentiation of SBAC. Moreover, the AMP-activated protein kinase α1 (AMPKα1) activity was positively correlated with brown adipocyte formation potential. Importantly, melatonin effectively activated AMPKα1. Furthermore, promotional effects of melatonin were abolished by AMPKα1 knockout, suggesting the involvement of AMPKα1 in this process. Collectively, these results suggested that melatonin enhanced brown adipocyte formation in SBACs in vitro through activation of AMPKα1.

The effects of the oral administration of Rehmannia glutinosa polysaccharide (RGP-1) on the immunoregulatory properties, antioxidant activity, and resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila in Cyprinus carpio L. were investigated. The purified RGP-1 (250, 500, and 1,000 μg/mL) was co-cultured with the head kidney cells of the common carp. The proliferation and phagocytosis activities of the head kidney cells, and the concentration of nitric oxide (NO) and cytokines in the culture medium were determined. Next, 300 common carps (47.66 ± 0.43 g) were randomly divided into five groups; the two control groups (negative and positive) were administered sterile PBS and the three treatment groups were administered different concentrations of RGP-1 (250, 500, and 1,000 μg/mL) for seven days. Subsequently, the positive and treatment groups were infected with A. hydrophila, and the negative group was administered sterile PBS for 24 h. The concentration of NO, cytokines, lysozyme (LZM), and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) in serum, the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), the levels of malonaldehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH), and the total activities of superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the hepatopancreas of the common carp were tested. We observed that RGP-1 could significantly enhance the proliferation and phagocytosis activities (P < 0.05), besides inducing the production of NO, pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β) (P < 0.05) in vitro. The in vivo experimental results revealed that RGP-1 significantly enhanced NO production, protein levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12), LZM and AKP activities, and the antioxidant content (T-AOC, SOD, CAT, GSH, GSH-Px, and MDA) compared to that observed in the negative group prior to A. hydrophila infection (P < 0.05). NO, pro-inflammatory cytokines, LZM and AKP activities were significantly lower than that in the positive group after infection (P < 0.05). However, whether infected or not, the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β) increased significantly in the RGP-1-treated groups (P < 0.05). Therefore, the results suggested that RGP-1 could enhance the non-specific immunity, antioxidant activity and anti-A. hydrophila activity of the common carp, and could be used as a safe and effective feed additive in aquaculture.

Abstract Background Appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinoma is an extremely rare disease in clinical practice. Here, we report a case of unprecedented size that occupied the entire abdomen of a man. Case presentation A 49-year-old Chinese Han man presented with symptoms of abdominal distension. During a computed tomography imaging examination, a cystic-solid mass that occupied his entire abdominal cavity was detected. During exploratory laparotomy, an appendiceal tumor in his abdominal-pelvic cavity measuring 27.6 × 14.2 cm was found, and he underwent tumor resection. The pathology of the tumor identified a well-differentiated appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinoma with mucin infiltrating into the soft tissue of the lump edge and omentum tissue. After surgery, our patient accepted intraperitoneal infusion chemotherapy. At present, he has had no recurrence for 15 months. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, the present case is the largest appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinoma reported. Surgical tumor resection is the preferred treatment for appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinoma. This is supplemented by chemotherapy which can further prolong survival.

In heart failure (HF) patients, diuretics remain the cornerstone of therapy to relieve fluid retention. However, the resulting volume loss activates the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS), which blunts the decline in volume depletion and blood pressure. RAAS activation, in turn, compromises the diuretic decongesting effect. Although corticosteroids can induce potent diuresis in HF patients, the effects of corticosteroids on RAAS activation remain unclear. Therefore, we assessed the effects of dexamethasone (Dex) on urine output and plasma angiotensin II and aldosterone levels in rats following water deprivation-induced dehydration, following induction of chronic HF (CHF), and following induction of CHF and volume expansion therapy. In the dehydration model, Dex significantly increased urine output and inhibited dehydration-induced RAAS activation. This favorable effect was abolished by the glucocorticoid receptor antagonist RU486, suggesting involvement of the glucocorticoid receptor. In the CHF model, Dex treatments doubled urine output without activating RAAS. Moreover, in acute volume expansion experiments, Dex pretreatments led to potent diuresis during the pretreatment period and restored renal adaptation to acute volume expansion without activating RAAS in rats with CHF. Collectively, these data show that corticosteroids induce potent diuresis without activating RAAS in rats.

In canine ventricular myocardium, endothelin-1 (ET-1) alone induced only a weak transient negative inotropic effect (NIE). However, ET-1 induced a marked sustained positive inotropic effect (PIE) subsequent to a transient NIE in the presence of norepinephrine (NE) at low concentrations (0.1 – 1 nM) and elicited a pronounced sustained NIE in the presence of NE at high concentrations (around 100 nM). Thus, the extent of β-adrenoceptor stimulation induced by NE played a crucial role in determining the characteristics of the inotropic effects of ET-1. The characteristics of ET receptor subtypes involved in contractile regulation and Ca2+ signaling induced by ET-1 were determined. The ET-1-induced transient NIE and decrease in Ca2+ transients were abolished by the selective ETA-receptor antagonist FR319317, but not by the selective ETB-receptor antagonist BQ-788. The sustained PIE and the increase in Ca2+ transients induced by ET-1 were abolished by FR319317, but not inhibited by BQ-788. In contrast, the sustained NIE of ET-1 was abolished by the non-selective ET antagonist TAK-044, markedly attenuated by FR319317, and partially inhibited by BQ-788. ET-1 alone elicited a PIE in the presence of BQ-788, which indicates that the activation of ETB-receptors counteracts the development of the PIE of ET-1. The current findings indicate that both ETA and ETB receptors are involved in the regulation of Ca2+ signaling and contractility in canine ventricular myocardium. The effect of synthesis time on phase compositions, lattice constant, average grain size, preferred orientation, and surface morphology of 12CaO·7Al2O3 synthesized at 1500°C was analyzed by XRD and SEM. The results indicate that the main phase of samples synthesized is 12CaO·7Al2O3 when holding time is over 30 min. The lattice constant increases and the preferred orientation decreases as synthesis time prolongs. The average grain size of samples is about 59 nm calculated by Scherrer formula, and it does not change with synthesis time. The synthesis time affects the micromorphology of samples greatly. There are more and bigger holes in samples synthesized for long time. The aspects mentioned above cause the alumina leaching ratio of 12CaO·7Al2O3 to increase with the prolonging of synthesis time, but the rate of increase drops.

To explain how individuals' self-perceived long-term mate value influences their mate preference and mate choice, two hypotheses have been presented, which are "potentials-attract" and "likes-attract", respectively. The potentials-attract means that people choose mates matched with their sex-specific traits indicating reproductive potentials; and the likes-attract means that people choose mates matched with their own conditions. However, the debate about these two hypotheses still remains unsolved. In this paper, we tested these two hypotheses using a human's actual mate choice data from a Chinese online dating system (called the Baihe website), where 27,183 users of Baihe website are included, in which there are 590 paired couples (1180 individuals) who met each other via the website. Our main results show that not only the relationship between individuals' own attributes and their self-stated mate preference but also that between individuals' own attributes and their actual mate choice are more consistent with the likes-attract hypothesis, i.e., people tend to choose mates who are similar to themselves in a variety of attributes.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the net micromineral (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) requirements for maintenance and growth of Dorper×Jinzhong crossbred ewe lambs at their latter fattening period. Methods: Thirty 1/2 Dorper × 1/2 Jinzhong crossed F1 ewe lambs (35±0.5 kg of body weight [BW]) were used and divided into five groups in a randomized design for a comparative slaughter trial. At the beginning of the experiment, six lambs were randomly selected and slaughtered at 35 kg BW to determine their initial body composition. When their BWs reached 43 kg, another six lambs fed ad libitum were slaughtered to serve as an intermediate slaughter group. The retained eighteen lambs were randomly distributed into three groups and offered one type of feed at 100%, 65%, and 40% of the ad libitum intake. When the lambs fed ad libitum reached a BW of 50 kg, the three groups were slaughtered. The body composition (muscle, fat, bone, blood with viscera, skin, and wool) were weighted, ground, mixed, and subsampled for mineral content analysis. Results: The net maintenance requirements of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn were 0.017, 0.160, 0.004, and 0.067 mg/kg BW/d, respectively, and the net growth requirements per 100 grams of average daily gain ranged from 0.48 to 0.51 mg of Cu, 2.63 to 2.17 mg of Fe, 0.12 to 0.15 mg of Mn, and 2.07 to 2.00 mg of Zn, respectively, for Dorper × Jinzhong crossed ewes from 35 to 50 kg BW. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the micromineral requirements for both maintenance and growth of Dorper × Jinzhong crossbred ewe lambs were quite different from the recommendations of NRC (2007), except for Zn. Purpose: To investigate whether paeonol affords neuroprotection against isoflurane-induced neurotoxicity. Methods: Separate groups of neonatal rat pups were administered paeonol (20, 40 or 80 mg/kg) from post-natal day 3 (P3) to post-natal day 15. On post-natal day 7, the pups were exposed to 6 h of isoflurane (0.75%) anesthesia. TUNEL assay was performed to assess neuroapoptosis. Cleaved caspase-3 expressions were evaluated by immunohistochemistry and western blotting analysis. The expressions of apoptotic pathway proteins and mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) were assessed by western blotting. The general behaviour of the rats was determined by open field test and elevated maze test. Y-maze test and Morris water maze tests were performed to evaluate working memory and cognition. Results: Isoflurane exposure caused (p < 0.05) severe neuronal apoptosis in the hippocampal region and enhanced caspase-3 expressions. Paeonol supplementation remarkably (p < 0.05) reduced neuronal apoptosis and modulated expressions of apoptotic proteins. The raised expressions of NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β and significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced JNK/p38 signalling cascades were inhibited by paeonol. The expression levels of ERK were not significantly (p < 0.05) changed, but there was significant improvement in the general behaviour and working memory of the rats. Conclusion: Paeonol significantly improves cognitive impairments and offers neuroprotection against isoflurane-induced apoptosis via modulating JNK/ERK/p38 MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is believed to be involved in numerous physiological and pathophysiological processes, and now it is recognized as the third endogenous signaling gasotransmitter, following nitric oxide and carbon monoxide; however, the effects of H2S on inflammatory factors in acute myocardial ischemia injury in rats have not been clarified. In the present study, sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) was used as the H2S donor. Thirty-six male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups: Sham, ischemia, ischemia + low-dose (0.78 mg/kg) NaHS, ischemia + medium-dose (1.56 mg/kg) NaHS, ischemia + high-dose (3.12 mg/kg) NaHS and ischemia + propargylglycine (PPG) (30 mg/kg). The rats in each group were sacrificed 6 h after the surgery for sample collection. Compared with the ischemia group, the cardiac damage in the rats in the ischemia + NaHS groups was significantly reduced, particularly in the high-dose group; in the ischemia + PPG group, the myocardial injury was aggravated compared with that in the ischemia group. Compared with the ischemia group, the levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the serum of rats in the ischemia + medium- and high-dose NaHS groups were significantly reduced, and the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) mRNA and nuclear factor κ-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) protein in the myocardial tissues of rats was significantly reduced. In the ischemia + PPG group, the TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 levels in the serum were significantly increased, the expression of ICAM-1 mRNA was increased, although without a significant difference, and the expression of NF-κB was increased. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a signaling gasotransmitter, involved in various physiological and pathological processes. H2S-donating drugs have been tested to conjugate the beneficial effects of H2S with other pharmaceutical properties. It has been shown that the endogenous cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE)/H2S pathway participates in myocardial ischemia injury in isolated hearts in rats. The present study aimed to investigate the cytoprotective action of H2S against acute myocardial ischemia injury in rats. Isolated rat hearts were perfused and subjected to ischemic conditions for 4 h. The hearts were assigned to five groups: Sham, model, infarct plus low-dose (5 μmol/l) NaHS, infarct plus middle-dose (10 μmol/l) NaHS and infarct plus high-dose (20 μmol/l) NaHS. The administration of NaHS enhanced the activity of CSE, increased the content of H2S and reduced infarct volumes following myocardial ischemia injury. Furthermore, the administration of NaHS attenuated the injury to organelles (including the mitochondria, nucleus and myofilaments) by reducing lactate dehydrogenase activity, decreasing the level of mitochondrial malondialdehyde and increasing the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in the ischemic myocardial mitochondria. Four new triterpenoids, named Toosendansins A-D (1-4), along with nine known ones (5-13) were isolated from the fruits of Melia toosendan Sieb. et Zucc. Their structures were established on the basis of spectroscopic data. The isolation of compounds 1-12 were reported for the first time from this plant. All compounds were analyzed for the anti-Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) activity and protective effect on H2O2-induced damage of SH-SY5Y cells. Compound 7 showed evident anti-TMV activity. Fifteen new seco-pregnane steroidal glycosides cynanosides A-O (1-15) together with twenty-seven known ones were isolated from the roots of Cynanchum atratum. The structures of 1-15 were determined by extensive analysis of spectroscopic data. The anti-tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) activity of these steroidal glycosides was screened by the conventional half-leaf method, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Western blot methods, most of them showed potent anti-TMV activity. Among them, compounds 1, 7, 13, 28 and 31 showed significantly anti-TMV activity with an IC50 value of 20.5, 18.6, 22.0, 19.2 and 22.2 μg/mL, respectively, and were much more effective than the positive control, ningnanmycin (IC50 = 49.6 μg/mL). The effect of synthesis time on phase compositions, lattice constant, average grain size, preferred orientation, and surface morphology of 12CaO·7Al2O3 synthesized at 1500°C was analyzed by XRD and SEM. The results indicate that the main phase of samples synthesized is 12CaO·7Al2O3 when holding time is over 30 min. The lattice constant increases and the preferred orientation decreases as synthesis time prolongs. The average grain size of samples is about 59 nm calculated by Scherrer formula, and it does not change with synthesis time. The synthesis time affects the micromorphology of samples greatly. There are more and bigger holes in samples synthesized for long time. The aspects mentioned above cause the alumina leaching ratio of 12CaO·7Al2O3 to increase with the prolonging of synthesis time, but the rate of increase drops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Well-defined cleavable poly(styrene-block-ethylene oxide) polymers were prepared by living anioinc polymerization, using cumyl potassium as the initiator. These polymers contained an acid cleavable moiety, such as diphenyl methyl or anthracenyl methyl ether linkage, between polystyrene and poly ethylene oxide block. Abstract  The structures and optical properties of host–guest complexes produced from cucurbit[n = 6–8]urils and some benzimidazole derivatives have been investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopy, electronic absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The experimental results reveal that calculations of A∼NQ[n]/Nguest and If∼NQ[n]/Nguest for the same association complex both support a good fit to an identical binding model. In particular, the A∼NQ[n]/Nguest, If∼NQ[n]/Nguest calculations and the 1H NMR determinations for three Q[6]–ge(1∼3) complexes and three Q[8]–ge(1∼3) complexes all support a binding model of 1:1 and 1:2 respectively. Abstract Hostguest complexes of cucurbit[n=58]uril and some examples of ortho substituted pyridines or aminopyridines were examined by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Portal binding of two ortho aminopyridine free bases, by cucurbit[5]uril, was observed in 1H NMR spectra. Combined cavity and portal binding in cucurbit[6]uril were observed for both the free base 2-aminomethylpyridine, ampy, the HCl salt, ampy1HCl, and the salt of 2,2'-bispyridine, bpy1HCl. Two novel complexes were formed with cucurbit[6]uril. The free base ampyas a dual occupant, formed a 2:1 complex, and bpy1HCl formed a stable asymmetric 1:1 complex. Only portal binding of 2,6-bisaminomethylpyridine and its salts was observed for cucurbit[6]uril. Fast exchange of the free base and pyridineammonium salts was observed for cucurbit[7-8]uril. Experiments were carried out in isolated canine ventricular trabeculae and acetoxymethylester of indo-1-loaded single myocytes to elucidate the role of protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) in the inotropic effect of endothelin-1 (ET-1) induced by crosstalk with norepinephrine (NE). The PTK inhibitor genistein was used as a pharmacological tool.Genistein but not daidzein inhibited the positive inotropic effect and the increase in Ca2+ transients induced by ET-1 by crosstalk with NE at low concentrations.Genistein and daidzein antagonized the negative inotropic effect and the decrease in Ca2+ transients induced by ET-1 by crosstalk with NE at high concentrations, but genistein did not affect the antiadrenergic effect of carbachol.Genistein but not daidzein enhanced the positive inotropic effect and the increase in Ca2+ transients induced by NE viaß-adrenoceptors, while the enhancing effect of genistein was abolished by the protein tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor vanadate.These findings indicate that genistein (1) induces a positive inotropic effect in association with an increase in Ca2+ transients, (2) inhibits the positive inotropic effect of ET-1 induced by crosstalk with NE, and (3) enhances the positive inotropic effect of NE induced viaß-adrenoceptors by inhibition of PTK. In addition, genistein inhibits the negative inotropic effect of ET-1 induced by crosstalk with NE through a PTK-unrelated mechanism. We propose a coupling model to describe the interaction between the bright and dark modes of the plasmons of a dimer composed of two orthogonal gold nano-rods (GNRs), referred to as the BDMC model. This model shows that the eigen-frequencies of the coupled plasmons are governed by Coulomb potential and electrostatic potential. With the BDMC model, the behaviors of the coupling coefficient and the frequency offset, which is a new parameter introduced here, are revealed. Meanwhile, the asymmetric behavior of two eigen-frequencies related to gap of two GNRs is explained. Using the harmonic oscillator model and the coupled parameters obtained by the BDMC model, the bright mode absorption spectra of the dimer are calculated and the results agree with the numerical simulation.
