Abstract Controlling the coherence of chaotic soliton bunch holds the promise to explore novel light-matter interactions and manipulate dynamic events such as rogue waves. However, the coherence control of chaotic soliton bunch remains challenging, as there is a lack of dynamic equilibrium mechanism for stochastic soliton interactions. Here, we develop a strategy to effectively control the coherence of chaotic soliton bunch in a laser. We show that by introducing a lumped fourth-order-dispersion (FOD), the soliton oscillating tails can be formed and generate the potential barriers among the chaotic solitons. The repulsive force between neighboring solitons enabled by the potential barriers gives rise to an alleviation of the soliton fusion/annihilation from stochastic interactions, endowing the capability to control the coherence in chaotic soliton bunch. We envision that this result provides a promising test-bed for a variety of dynamical complexity science and brings new insights into the nonlinear behavior of chaotic laser sources.

ABSTRACT Locusta migratoria is an important phytophagous pest, and its gut microbial communities play an important role in cellulose degradation. In this study, the gut microbial and cellulose digestibility dynamics of Locusta migratoria were jointly analyzed using high-throughput sequencing and anthrone colorimetry. The results showed that the gut microbial diversity and cellulose digestibility across life stages were dynamically changing. The species richness of gut bacteria was significantly higher in eggs than in larvae and imago, the species richness and cellulose digestibility of gut bacteria were significantly higher in early larvae (first and second instars) than in late larvae (third to fifth instars), and the diversity of gut bacteria and cellulose digestibility were significantly higher in imago than in late larvae. There is a correlation between the dynamics of gut bacterial communities and cellulose digestibility. Enterobacter, Lactococcus, and Pseudomonas are the most abundant genera throughout all life stages. Six strains of highly efficient cellulolytic bacteria were screened, which were dominant gut bacteria. Carboxymethyl cellulase activity (CMCA) and filter paper activity (FPA) experiments revealed that Pseudomonas had the highest cellulase enzyme activity. This study provides a new way for the screening of cellulolytic bacteria and lays the foundation for developing insects with significant biomass into cellulose-degrading bioreactors.IMPORTANCECellulose is the most abundant and cheapest renewable resource in nature, but its degradation is difficult, so finding efficient cellulose degradation methods is an urgent challenge. Locusta migratoria is a large group of agricultural pests, and the large number of microorganisms that inhabit their intestinal tracts play an important role in cellulose degradation. Abstract This work presents a series of novel quinoidal organic semiconductors based on diselenophene‐dithioalkylthiophene (DSpDST) conjugated cores with various side‐chain lengths (‐thiohexyl, ‐thiodecyl, and ‐thiotetradecyl, designated DSpDSTQ‐6, DSpDSTQ‐10, and DSpDSTQ‐14, respectively). The purpose of this research is to develop solution‐processable organic semiconductors using dicyanomethylene end‐capped organic small molecules for organic field effect transistors (OFETs) application. The physical, electrochemical, and electrical properties of these new DSpDSTQs are systematically studied, along with their performance in OFETs and thin film morphologies. Additionally, the molecular structures of DSpDSTQ are determined through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis. The results reveal the presence of intramolecular S (alkyl)···Se (selenophene) interactions, which result in a planar SR‐containing DSpDSTQ core, thereby promoting extended π‐orbital interactions and efficient charge transport in the OFETs. Moreover, the influence of thioalkyl side chain length on surface morphologies and microstructures is investigated. Remarkably, the compound with the shortest thioalkyl chain, DSpDSTQ‐6, demonstrates ambipolar carrier transport with the highest electron and hole mobilities of 0.334 and 0.463 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. These findings highlight the excellence of ambipolar characteristics of solution‐processable OFETs based on DSpDSTQs even under ambient conditions.

In aquatic ecosystems, light penetrating the sediment surface in shallow lakes may regulate the internal phosphorus (P) release through benthic primary production, which subsequently affects oxidation, pH levels, and alkaline phosphatase activity in the upper sediment. To study the effects of light exposure on the P dynamics at the sediment-water interface under eutrophic conditions, a two-month mesocosm experiment was conducted in twelve cement tanks (1000 L each). The tanks were equipped with Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lights, and surface sediments collected from eutrophic Lake Nanhu (China) were exposed to four different light intensities (0, 50, 100, 200 μmol m−2 s−1). The results revealed that: 1) Both the total phosphorus concentration and the phosphorus release flux from the sediment were lower in the light treatments (mean value, 0.59–0.71 mg L−1 and 0.00–0.01 mg m−2 d−1, respectively) than in the control treatment (0.77 mg L−1 and 0.01 mg m−2 d−1, respectively), indicating that light supplement could decrease the internal P release. 2) Benthic primary production promoted by light directly absorbed soluble reactive phosphorus and decreased the internal P release. The resulting improved production could also increase dissolved oxygen concentrations at the sediment-water interface, thus indirectly inhibiting internal P release. 3) The relative contributions of direct absorption and indirect inhibition on the internal P release ranged between 23% to 69% and 31% to 77% depending on the light intensity.

Abstract Finely tuned mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling is important for cancer cell survival. Perturbations that push cells out of the MAPK fitness zone result in cell death. Previously, in a screen of the North China Pharmaceutical Group Corporation’s pure compound library of microbial origin, we identified elaiophylin as an autophagy inhibitor. Here, we demonstrated a new role for elaiophylin in inducing excessive endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, ER-derived cytoplasmic vacuolization, and consequent paraptosis by hyperactivating the MAPK pathway in multiple cancer cells. Genome-wide CRISPR/Cas9 knockout library screening identified SHP2, an upstream intermediary of the MAPK pathway, as a critical target in elaiophylin-induced paraptosis. The cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assay further confirmed the direct binding between the SHP2 and elaiophylin. Inhibition of the SHP2/SOS1/MAPK pathway through SHP2 knockdown or pharmacological inhibitors distinctly attenuated elaiophylin-induced paraptosis and autophagy inhibition. Interestingly, elaiophylin markedly increased the already-elevated MAPK levels and preferentially killed drug-resistant cells with enhanced basal MAPK levels. Elaiophylin overcame drug resistance by triggering paraptosis in multiple tumor-bearing mouse models resistant to platinum, taxane, or PARPi, suggesting that elaiophylin might offer a reasonable therapeutic strategy for refractory ovarian cancer.

Aquaporins(AQPs)is a family of transmembrane channins with low activation energy, high selectivity and rapid transport of water molecules, widely expressed in eye tissues. It was found that AQPs has physiological functions in eye tissue including maintaining the internal lens circulation homeostasis, participating in atrial aqueous circulation, mediating retinal signaling and promoting damage repair. Mutations or abnormal function of AQPs can lead to the occurrence of various ophthalmic diseases. If the expression and function of AQPs can be changed by using certain drugs or technical means, it is expected to become a new target for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases in the future.

Abstract Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are characterized by upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines and immune dysregulation, which provide a reasonable basis for immunotherapy in patients. Megakaryocytes are crucial in the pathogenesis of primary myelofibrosis (PMF), the most clinically aggressive subtype of MPN. In this study, we aimed to explore PD‐L1 (programmed death‐ligand 1) expression in megakaryocytes and its clinical implications in PMF. We analyzed PD‐L1 expression on megakaryocytes in PMF patients by immunohistochemistry and correlated the results with clinicopathological features and molecular aberrations. We employed a two‐tier grading system considering both the proportion of cells positively stained and the intensity of staining. Among the 85 PMF patients, 41 (48%) showed positive PD‐L1 expression on megakaryocytes with the immune‐reactive score ranging from 1 to 12. PD‐L1 expression correlated closely with higher white blood cell count (p = 0.045), overt myelofibrosis (p = 0.010), JAK2V617F mutation (p = 0.011), and high‐molecular risk mutations (p = 0.045), leading to less favorable overall survival in these patients (hazard ratio 0.341, 95% CI 0.135–0.863, p = 0.023). Our study provides unique insights into the interaction between immunologic and molecular phenotypes in PMF patients. Future work to explore the translational potential of PD‐L1 in the clinical setting is needed.

Here, using machine learning methods, the authors present a mortality risk prediction model for COVID-19 that uses patients’ clinical data on admission to stratify patients by mortality risk.

Nutrient loading reduction is an essential approach for controlling eutrophication. In addition to external nutrient loading, internal phosphorus (P) loading is usually considered one of the most important factors determining nutrient levels in water. The underwater light climate plays a pivotal role. However, few studies have been reported on the effect of light intensity on P release, and the existing studies have not drawn a definitive conclusion on whether underwater light has a positive or negative effect on P release. To confirm the effect of underwater light on internal P release, a 1-month microcosm experiment was carried out (18 November–15 December 2020) under three light intensities. The P release flux (FP) was significantly higher in the control (no light) group than in the low light group during the first 2 weeks (p = 0.03). No difference among treatments occurred for accumulative FP in the past 4 weeks, although it tended to be higher in the control than in both the low and high light groups (p > 0.05). Spearman rank correlations showed that photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) was positively correlated with DO, pH, phytoplankton chlorophyll a (Chl aPhyt) and benthic algae chlorophyll a (Chl aBent). DO was positively correlated with Chl aPhyt and Chl aBent. The results indicate that light may promote the growth of phytoplankton and benthic algae, both of which may increase DO and pH. DO inhibits P release from sediment and pH promotes P release from sediment. Lake-scale studies are needed to fully evaluate its effect under natural conditions, as many other factors (e.g., wind or fish disturbance) in natural lakes could regulate P release from sediment.

In this study, we design a compact sensor with high sensitivity for refractive index change. A pulley-type metallic microring to produce surface plasmon polariton is proposed. The light is coupled onto the metallic microring using a dielectric waveguide. The 2-D finite-difference time-domain method is used to determine the optimal radius of the metallic microring. We also investigate the relation between the radius of the metallic microring and the sensitivity of the refractive index change. The highest sensitivity of 602.69 nm/RIU can be obtained at the resonance wavelength of 1536.7 nm. Keywords: Sensor, Ring resonator, Surface plasmon polariton

The recognition of impassable terrain plays a vital role in the motion planning of a mobile robot, which generally relies on expensive sensors such as stereo vision cameras. This paper proposes a rapid impassable terrain recognition algorithm based on hypotheses testing theory using low-cost range finders with different diffusion angles. In this algorithm, a slope estimation model using two range finders mounted on different heights is first established, where the influence of the diffusion angle of the range sensor is considered. To deal with inaccurate measuring from low cost range finders, the hypothesis testing theory is then applied to judge whether there is an impassible terrain approaching, where the historical slope estimation results are treated as a sample set of the same slope, and the judgement of impassible terrain is then made based on the sampling set rather than the concurrent slope estimation. So the robot is only required to count the number of slope estimation that support the determination of a terrain as being impassible, and the judgement is confirmed only when that number is larger than a precisely designed threshold value. Then the stable recognition for impassable terrain would be acquired while the risk of wrong judgement is limited. The experiments' results indicate that this algorithm can provide a reliable recognition of impassable terrain using lower cost range finders with different diffusion angles with minimal computation. Self-assembly behaviors of a series of hydrophobic side-chain liquid crystalline (LC) polyacetylenes, namely, poly(5-(4‘-alkoxy-4-biphenylyl)carbonyloxy-1-pentyne)s P-3,m(m5, 7, 9), were studied in dilute solutions. The assembly was induced by tuning the solvent property to be selective for the alkyl tails on the side chains, with the processes characterized by turbidity, dynamic light scattering, 1H NMR, and excitation fluorescence anisotropy measurements. The morphology and structure of the P-3,maggregates formed in the solutions were investigated using atomic force microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The experimental results indicate that the P-3,mpolymers can form monolayer lamellae in selective solvents. In the lamella, the P-3,mmolecules are sheetlike and pack parallel to each other with their backbones located in the lamellar center and their alkyl tails covering the top and bottom lamellar surfaces. The lamellar thickness is largely determined by the width of the molecular sheet. When the solvent becomes selective for the tails, the P-3,mchains may undergo shape stiffening to become more sheetlike. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dipole coupled nanomagnets controlled by the static Zeeman field can form various magnetic logic interconnects. However, the corner wire interconnect is often unreliable and error-prone at room temperature. In this study, we address this problem by making it into a reliable type with trapezoid-shaped nanomagnets, the shape anisotropy of which helps to offer the robustness. The building method of the proposed corner wire interconnect is discussed, and both its static and dynamic magnetization properties are investigated. Static micromagnetic simulation demonstrates that it can work correctly and reliably. Dynamic response results are reached by imposing an ac microwave field on the proposed corner wire. It is found that strong ferromagnetic resonance absorption appears at a low frequency. With the help of a very small ac field with the peak resonance frequency, the required static Zeeman field to switch the corner wire is significantly decreased by ∼21 mT. This novel interconnect would pave the way for the realization of reliable and low power nanomagnetic logic circuits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
