The requirements for drilling bentonites are tightening due to ever-increasing demands for petroleum resources, coupled with cost and reaction technology constraints. In addition to raising the risk of drilling, bentonite's poor performance also raises the possibility of safety incidents and significant financial losses. Organically modified bentonites effectively reduce the consumption of drilling fluids, conserve resources, and lessen environmental effects. This paper aims to provide an overview of the several organic modification methods of bentonite for drilling fluids. It also evaluates the characteristics and application impacts of bentonite. We primarily describe the three popular modification methods represented by intercalation, coupling, and grafting. Also, this review provides the effect of molecular simulation on the investigation of structure in microconfined conditions. The infinite-layer nickelates, isostructural to the high-Tc cuprate superconductors, have emerged as a promising platform to host unconventional superconductivity and stimulated growing interest in the condensed matter community. Despite considerable attention, the superconducting pairing symmetry of the nickelate superconductors, the fundamental characteristic of a superconducting state, is still under debate. Moreover, the strong electronic correlation in the nickelates may give rise to a rich phase diagram, where the underlying interplay between the superconductivity and other emerging quantum states with broken symmetry is awaiting exploration. Here, we study the angular dependence of the transport properties of the infinite-layer nickelate Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 superconducting films with Corbino-disk configuration. The azimuthal angular dependence of the magnetoresistance (R(φ)) manifests the rotational symmetry breaking from isotropy to four-fold (C4) anisotropy with increasing magnetic field, revealing a symmetry-breaking phase transition. Approaching the low-temperature and large-magnetic-field regime, an additional two-fold (C2) symmetric component in the R(φ) curves and an anomalous upturn of the temperature-dependent critical field are observed simultaneously, suggesting the emergence of an exotic electronic phase. Our work uncovers the evolution of the quantum states with different rotational symmetries in nickelate superconductors and provides deep insight into their global phase diagram. What Is Known and Objective. CYP2C19 is an important influencing factor for voriconazole trough plasma concentration (Cmin); however, it is not verified in Child–Pugh C (CP-C) cirrhosis patients, and no voriconazole dosage regimen is recommended for these patients in the package insert. This retrospective study identified CYP2C19 and other factors influencing voriconazole Cmin for CP-C cirrhosis, and obtained an appropriate method of application of voriconazole for them. Methods. A total of 66 patients with CP-C cirrhosis who accepted voriconazole therapy were involved. The voriconazole Cmin, clinical characteristics, CYP2C19 genotype, and adverse effects (AEs) were recorded and analyzed. Results. Unlike other research studies, voriconazole Cmin was not different among normal metabolizers (NMs), intermediate metabolizers (IMs), and poor metabolizers (PMs) of the CYP2C19 enzyme in CP-C cirrhosis (P > 0.05). The maintenance dose regimen for voriconazole was the only independent influencing factor for Cmin (P = 0.045; OR = 3.753; 95% CI, 1.029–13.694). At about 1/3 of the recommended maintenance dose, only 16.7% (8/48) had Cmin >5.5 μg/mL, 4.5% (3/48) had Cmin <1 μg/mL, and only one AE happened. There were four voriconazole-related AEs that happened in this study, and three AEs occurred (3/4, 75%) when the maintenance dose was not adjusted with therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). What Is New and Conclusion. Voriconazole Cmin did not significantly vary according to CYP2C19 enzyme metabolization status (being an NM, IM, or PM) in CP-C cirrhosis. Reducing the maintenance dose of voriconazole to approximately 1/3 the standard maintenance dose and administering in combination with TDM in patients with CP-C cirrhosis are recommended. The carpal bones are eight small bones with irregularities and high curvature on their surfaces. The 3D model of the carpal bone serves as the foundation of further clinical applications, e.g., wrist kinematic behavior. However, due to the limitation of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technique, reconstructed carpal bone models are discretely undersampled, which has dramatic stair-step effects and leads to abnormal meshes on edges or surfaces, etc. Our study focuses on determining the viability of various smoothing techniques for a carpal model reconstructed by in vivo gathered MR images. Five algorithms, namely the Laplacian smoothing algorithm, the Laplacian smoothing algorithm with pre-dilation, the scale-dependent Laplacian algorithm, the curvature flow algorithm, and the inverse distance algorithm, were chosen for evaluation. The assessment took into account the Relative Volume Difference and the Hausdorff Distance as well as the surface quality and the preservation of morphological and morphometric properties. For the five algorithms, we analyzed the Relative Volume Difference and the Hausdorff Distance for all eight carpal bones. Among all the algorithms, the scale-dependent Laplacian method processed the best result regarding surface quality and the preservation of morphological and morphometric properties. Based on our extensive examinations, the scale-dependent Laplacian algorithm is suitable for the undersampled carpal bone model with small volume and large curvature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A strategy to improve its photocatalytic performance is still a challenge for the novel Sillen–Aurivillius perovskite type Bi4NbO8Br. Herein, novel Pt modified Bi4NbO8Br composites (Pt/BNB) with sufficient oxygen vacancies were successfully fabricated via a facile in situ chemical reduction method. For one thing, the deposition of Pt nanoparticles brings about a Mott–Schottky effect at the interface to accept photo-induced electrons, leading to an efficient charge separation. For another thing, the electronic metal–support interaction of Pt and Bi4NbO8Br decreases the formation energy of oxygen defects, which could serve as active sites for O2 activation. On account of the synergetic effect of Pt and oxygen vacancies, the dominant active species-photogenerated holes are accumulated on the surface of the photocatalysts, while the additional superoxide radicals are also involved. Hence, Pt/BNB performed with excellent photocatalytic activities in the degradation of wastewater contaminants, and the kinetic rate was 4.64, 10.21, 5.53, 9.80, 1.71 and 4.05 times, respectively, those of pristine Bi4NbO8Br towards methyl orange, rhodamine B, 2,4-dichlorophenol, p-nitrophenol, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline hydrochloride. The role of long non‐coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in thyroid carcinoma (TC), the most frequent endocrine malignancy, has been extensively examined. This study investigated effect of interaction among lncRNA TNRC6C‐AS1, serine/threonine‐protein kinase 4 (STK4) and Hippo signalling pathway on TC. Initially, lncRNA TNRC6C‐AS1 expression in TC tissues was detected. To explore roles of lncRNA TNRC6C‐AS1, STK4 and Hippo signalling pathway in TC progression, their expressions were altered. Interaction between lncRNA TNRC6C‐AS1 and STK4, STK4 promoter methylation, or Hippo signalling pathway was verified. After that, a series of experiments were employed to evaluate in vitro ability of apoptosis, proliferation and autophagy of TC cells and in vivo tumorigenicity, and tumour growth of TC cells. lncRNA TNRC6C‐AS1 was highly expressed while STK4 was poorly expressed in TC tissues. LncRNA TNRC6C‐AS1 promoted the STK4 methylation and down‐regulated STK4 expression, which further activated the Hippo signalling pathway. STK4 silencing was observed to promote the proliferation ability of TC cells, inhibit the apoptosis and autophagy abilities, as well as enhance the tumorigenicity and tumour growth. Moreover, the in vitro proliferation ability as well as the in vivo tumorigenicity and tumour growth of TC cells were inhibited after the blockade of Hippo signalling pathway, while the apoptosis and autophagy abilities were promoted. The results demonstrate that the lncRNA TNRC6C‐AS1 increases STK4 promoter methylation to down‐regulate STK4 expression, thereby promoting the development of TC through activation of Hippo signalling pathway. Bioregenerative life support system (BLSS) plays a key role in the long‐duration manned space mission. Microalgae‐based BLSS was proposed decades ago but it had a variety of technical problems hindering its application in space mission. However, in recent years, a lot of effort has been devoted to this field and great progresses have been achieved in the research of microalgae‐based BLSS. Therefore, the main aim of this work is to summarize the previous progress and find the challenges faced by microalgae‐based BLSS technology. In this regard, this works introduces the concept of microalgae‐based BLSS and presents its development paths in the past decades. Additionally, technology updates in the aspects of microalgae‐based oxygen generation, value‐added biomass production as food alternative, and wastes treatment by microalgae are summarized. Challenges faced by microalgae‐based BLSS and potential solutions are discussed. BACKGROUND: Low oxygen content and high density of airborne fine particulates in closed environments are serious problems threatening people's health. Herein a novel concept of using microalgae for air purification is proposed, and approaches, including the construction of a condensed microalgae film and the use of hydrogel, to realize this concept in a real‐world application are discussed. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that moisture loss, which limited O2 production and fine particulates removal, is a serious technical barrier to the durable use of this air purifier. With the addition of hydrogel, moisture loss of microalgae film in 8 h was reduced to 24.76%. Comparison of the contributions of hydrogel and microalgae indicated that in this air purifier, microalgae mainly contributed to fine particulates removal while hydrogel enhanced the performance of microalgae film by alleviating the moisture loss. Studies on the mechanisms proved that fine particulates removal by microalgae film is mainly driven by negative surface charge on microalgae cells. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that qa microalgae‐film based air purifier performed well in oxygen production and fine particulates removal. Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRs) have been recently shown to be heavily involved in the development of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and suggested as a potential therapeutic target in ALD. The miR‐34a was consistently reported to be significantly elevated in several ALD rodent models, but it remains unclear how miR‐34a modulates the cellular behaviours of hepatocytes in ALD development and progression. This study aims to characterize alcohol‐induced miR‐34a impact on hepatocytes growth and apoptosis. The miRNA array was performed to assess changes in miRNA after chronic alcohol feeding. Liver and blood samples were used to examine ALD progression. The miR‐34a was overexpressed in human hepatocytes to evaluate its impact on cell growth and apoptosis. Real‐time quantitative PCR and Western blot were used to determine the growth and apoptosis molecular signalling pathways associated with miR‐34a. Alcohol feeding significantly promoted fatty liver progression, serum ALT levels, apoptosis and miR‐34a expression in rat liver. Overexpression of miR‐34a in human hepatocytes suppressed cell growth signallings, including c‐Met, cyclin D1 and cyclin‐dependent kinase 6 (CDK6). The miR‐34a might also inhibit the expression of sirtuin 1 (Sirt1) and its target, B‐cell lymphoma 2. Interestingly, the expression of miR‐34a reverses the suppressive effects of ethanol on cell growth. But, miR‐34a promotes hepatocyte senescence and apoptosis. Although the miR‐34a‐mediated down‐regulation of cell growth‐associated genes may contribute to cell growth retardation, other miR‐34a targets, such as Sirt1, may reverse this phenotype. Background: Although great progress has been made in the pathogenesis and treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI), it still has high incidence and poor prognosis. The present study was performed in order to further understand the metabolomic changes of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced AKI and the protective effect of L-carnitine on AKI. Methods: Kidney tissues and serum samples were collected at different time points from three groups of rats including control group, I/R group and L-carnitine-pretreated group. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry-based metabolomics approach was applied to investigate the characteristic of I/R-induced AKI and the protective effects of L-carnitine in rat kidney I/R model. Antioxidant enzymatic activity and phospholipase A2 activity were determined to validate the metabolic outcomes. Results: Changes in the pattern of endogenous metabolites as a result of kidney I/R injury were readily detected as early as 2 h after reperfusion, and earlier than the increase in blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine. Twenty-eight differential endogenous metabolites were discovered and structurally identified by MSn analysis. After I/R injury, lysophospholipids, free fatty acids and nitrotyrosine significantly increased, while carnitine and acetyl-carnitine significantly decreased compared to control. Phospholipase A2 activity and malondialdehyde level also increased, while superoxide dismutase activity decreased in kidney I/R injury rats. Treatment of L-carnitine 30 min prior to reperfusion significantly relieved I/R-induced metabolomic changes. Conclusion: I/R-induced AKI could be characterized by oxidative stress and changes in lipid metabolism through metabolomic investigation, and L-carnitine treatment 30 min before reperfusion had protective effects against I/R-induced AKI. Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a highly lethal and aggressive disease. Recently, IDH1/2 mutations have been identified in approximately 20% of CCAs which suggests an involvement of 2-oxoglutarate (2-OG) -dependent dioxygenases in oncogenesis. We investigated if the 2-OG dependent dioxygenase, aspartate beta-hydroxylase (ASPH) was important in tumor development and growth. Immunoassays were used to clarify how ASPH modulates CCA progression by promoting phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma protein (RB1). A xenograft model was employed to determine the role of ASPH on CCA growth. Knockdown of ASPH expression inhibited CCA development and growth by reducing RB1 phosphorylation. Expression of ASPH promoted direct protein interaction between RB1, cyclin-dependent kinases, and cyclins. Treatment with 2-OG-dependent dioxygenase and ASPH inhibitors suppressed the interaction between RB1 and CDK4 as well as RB1 phosphorylation. Knockdown of ASPH expression inhibited CCA progression and RB1 phosphorylation in vivo and they were found to be highly expressed in human CCAs. Summary Background Sepsis encompasses two phases, the ‘hyper’-reactive phase and the ‘hypo’-reactive phase. The initial inflammatory stage is quickly counterbalanced by an anti-inflammatory response, which compromises the immune system, leading to immune suppression. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of sepsis by inducing immunosuppression; however, the role of CD39 + Tregs in the process of sepsis is uncertain. This study investigated the dynamic levels of CD39 + Tregs and their phenotypic change in sepsis. Methods Fourteen patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), 42 patients with sepsis, and 14 healthy controls were enrolled. Sequential blood samples were used to analyze the numbers of CD39 + Tregs and their phenotypic changes. Survival at 28 days was used to evaluate the capacity of CD39 + Treg levels to predict mortality in sepsis patients. Results Sepsis patients displayed a high percentage (3.13%, 1.46%, and 0.35%, respectively) and mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) (59.65, 29.7, and 24.3, respectively) of CD39 + Tregs compared with SIRS patients and healthy subjects. High-level expression of CD39 + Tregs was correlated with the severity of sepsis, which was reflected by the sepsis-related organ failure assessment score ( r = 0.322 and r = 0.31, respectively). In addition, the expression of CD39 + Tregs was associated with survival of sepsis patients ( p < 0.01). By receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the percentage and MFI of CD39 + Tregs showed similar sensitivities and specificities to predict mortality (74.2% and 85.1%, and 73.9% and 84.1%, respectively). Using Kaplan–Meier curves to assess the impact of CD39 + Tregs percentage and MFI on overall survival, we found that a high CD39 + Tregs percentage ( p < 0.001; >4.1%) and MFI ( p < 0.001; >49.2) were significantly associated with mortality. Phenotypically, CD39 + Tregs from sepsis patients showed high expression of CD38 and PD-1 ( p < 0.01 and p < 0.01 respectively). Conclusions Increased expression of CD39 + Tregs was associated with a poor prognosis for sepsis patients, which suggests that CD39 + Treg levels could be used as a biomarker to predict the outcome of sepsis patients. As an indispensable component of various living organisms, the antioxidant proteins have been studied for anti-aging and prevention of various diseases, such as altitude sickness, coronary heart disease, and even cancer. However, the traditional experimental methods for identifying the antioxidant proteins are very expensive and time-consuming. Thus, to address the challenge, a new predictor, named ANOX, was developed in this study. Multiple features, such as frequency matrix features (FRE), amino acid and dipeptide composition (AADP), evolutionary difference formula features (EEDP), k-separated bigrams (KSB), and PSI-PRED secondary structure (PRED), were extracted to generate the original feature space. To find the optimized feature subset, the Max-Relevance-Max-Distance (MRMD) algorithm was implemented for feature ranking and our model received the best performance with the top 1170 features. Rigorous tests were performed to evaluate the performance of ANOX, and the results showed that ANOX achieved a major improvement in the prediction accuracy of the antioxidant proteins (AUC:0.930 and 0.935 using 5-fold cross-validation or the jackknife test) compared to the state-of-the-art predictor AOPs-SVM (AUC:0.869 and 0.885). The nature of the anomalous metal state has been a major puzzle in condensed matter physics for more than three decades. Here, we report systematic investigation and modulation of the anomalous metal states in high-temperature interface superconductor FeSe films on SrTiO&#95;{3} substrate. Remarkably, under zero magnetic field, the anomalous metal state persists up to 20 K in pristine FeSe films, an exceptionally high temperature standing out from previous observations. In stark contrast, for the FeSe films with nanohole arrays, the characteristic temperature of the anomalous metal state is considerably reduced. We demonstrate that the observed anomalous metal states originate from the quantum tunneling of vortices adjusted by the Ohmic dissipation. Our work offers a perspective for understanding the origin and modulation of the anomalous metal states in two-dimensional bosonic systems.

Main Conclusion: Physiological and molecular tests show that NUP96 plays an important role in the plant response to salt stress, resulting from the reprogramming of transcriptomic profiles, which are likely to be mediated by the influence on the nuclear/cytosol shuttling of the key regulators of salt tolerance. As a key component of the nuclear pore complex (NPC), nucleoporin 96 (NUP96) is critical for modulating plant development and interactions with environmental factors, but whether NUP96 is involved in the salt response is still unknown. Here, we analyzed the role of Arabidopsis NUP96 under salt stress. The loss-of-function mutant nup96 exhibited salt sensitivity in terms of rosette growth and root elongation, and showed attenuated capacity in maintaining ion and ROS homeostasis, which could be compensated for by the overexpression of NUP96. RNA sequencing revealed that many salt-responsive genes were misregulated after NUP96 mutation, and especially NUP96 is required for the expression of a large portion of salt-induced genes. This is likely correlated with the activity in facilitating nuclear/cytosol transport of the underlying regulators in salt tolerance such as the transcription factor ATAP2, targeted by eight downregulated genes in nup96 under salt stress. Superconductor-insulator/metal transition (SMT) as a paradigm of quantum phase transition has been a research highlight over the last three decades. Benefit from recent developments in the fabrication and measurements of two-dimensional (2D) superconducting films and nanodevices, unprecedented quantum phenomena have been revealed in the quantum phase transitions of 2D superconductors. In this review, we introduce the recent progress on quantum phase transitions in 2D superconductors, focusing on the quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) and anomalous metal state. Characterized by a divergent critical exponent when approaching zero temperature, QGS of SMT is discovered in ultrathin crystalline Ga films and subsequently detected in various 2D superconductors. The universality of QGS indicates the profound influence of quenched disorder on quantum phase transitions. Besides, in a 2D superconducting system, whether a metallic ground state can exist is a long-sought mystery. Early experimental studies indicate an intermediate metallic state in the quantum phase transition of 2D superconductors. Recently, in high-temperature superconducting films with patterned nanopores, a robust anomalous metal state (i.e. quantum metal or Bose metal) has been detected, featured as the saturated resistance in the low temperature regime. Moreover, the charge-2 e quantum oscillations are observed in nanopatterned films, indicating the bosonic nature of the anomalous metal state and ending the debate on whether bosons can exist as a metal. The evidences of the anomalous metal states have also been reported in crystalline epitaxial thin films and exfoliated nanoflakes, as well as granular composite films. High quality filters are used in these works to exclude the influence of external high frequency noises in ultralow temperature measurements. The observations of QGS and metallic ground states in 2D superconductors not only reveal the prominent role of quantum fluctuations and dissipations but also provide new perspective to explore quantum phase transitions in superconducting systems., (© 2023 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Context: Abnormally high expression of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) has been implied to accompany thyroid carcinoma (TC) development., Objective: This study aimed to explore the protumorigenic role and downstream signaling axis of METTL3 in TC., Methods: This study was conducted at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital Sun Yat-Sen University. METTL3 and miR-222-3p were overexpressed or downregulated in TC cells. Tumor and adjacent normal tissues were collected from 80 patients (19 men and 60 women, aged 30-70 years) with a pathological diagnosis of TC from January 2012 to January 2015. Cells were classified and subjected to different treatments. The expression of METTL3 was validated in TC tissues and cell lines. In functional studies, METTL3 and miR-222-3p were overexpressed or downregulated in TC cells to evaluate their effects on malignant behaviors, which were subsequently verified by xenografts in nude mice., Results: The expression of METTL3 was elevated in TC, correlating with poor prognosis of TC patients. Heightened METTL3 expression accelerated malignant behaviors of TC cells. Mechanistically, METTL3 stimulated miR-222-3p expression by mediating the m6A modification of pri-miR-222-3p. miR-222-3p targeted and inversely regulated serine/threonine stress kinase 4 (STK4). Knockdown of METTL3 augmented STK4 expression by downregulating miR-222-3p, thereby suppressing the malignant behaviors of TC cells as well as tumor growth and lung metastasis in nude mice., Conclusion: Silencing METTL3 suppresses miR-222-3p expression and thus stimulates STK4 expression, thereby repressing the malignancy and metastasis of TC., (© The Author(s) 2021. The 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmc) is a newly identified epigenetic modification thought to be regulated by the TET family of proteins. Little information is available about how ethanol consumption may modulate 5hmC formation and alcoholic liver disease (ALD) progression. A rat ALD model was used to study 5hmC in relationship to hepatocyte apoptosis. Human ALD liver samples were also used to validate these findings. It was found that chronic ethanol feeding significantly reduced 5hmC formation in a rat ALD model. There were no significant changes in TET2 and TET3 between the control- and ethanol-fed animals. In contrast, methylcytosine dioxygenase TET1 (TET1) expression was substantially reduced in the ethanol-fed rats and was accompanied by increased hepatocyte apoptosis. Similarly, knockdown of TET1 in human hepatocyte-like cells also significantly promoted apoptosis. Down-regulation of TET1 resulted in elevated expression of the DNA damage marker, suggesting a role for 5hmc in hepatocyte DNA damage as well. Mechanistic studies revealed that inhibition of TET1 promoted apoptotic gene expression. Similarly, targeting TET1 activity by removing cosubstrate promoted apoptosis and DNA damage. Furthermore, treatment with 5-azacitidine significantly mimics these effects, suggesting that chronic ethanol consumption promotes hepatocyte apoptosis and DNA damage by diminishing TET1-mediated 5hmC formation and DNA methylation. Echinoderms take many forms of symmetry. Pentameral symmetry is the major form and the other forms are derived from it. However, the ancestors of echinoderms, which originated from Cambrian period, were believed to be bilaterians. Echinoderm larvae are bilateral during their early development. During embryonic development of starfish and sea urchins, the position and the developmental sequence of each arm are fixed, implying an auxological anterior/posterior axis. Starfish also possess the Hox gene cluster, which controls symmetrical development. Overall, echinoderms are thought to have a bilateral developmental mechanism and process. In this article, we focused on adult starfish behaviors to corroborate its bilateral tendency. We weighed their central disk and each arm to measure the position of the center of gravity. We then studied their turning-over behavior, crawling behavior and fleeing behavior statistically to obtain the center of frequency of each behavior. By joining the center of gravity and each center of frequency, we obtained three behavioral symmetric planes. These behavioral bilateral tendencies might be related to the A/P axis during the embryonic development of the starfish. It is very likely that the adult starfish is, to some extent, bilaterian because it displays some bilateral propensity and has a definite behavioral symmetric plane. The remainder of bilateral symmetry may have benefited echinoderms during their evolution from the Cambrian period to the present.
