Abstract

Lakes are essential ecosystems that provide a large number of ecosystem services whose quality is strongly impacted by human pressures. Optimal uses of lakes require adapted management practices which in turn rely on physico-chemical and biological monitoring. Long-term ecological monitoring provides large sets of environmental data. When such data are available, they have to be associated to metadata and to be stored properly to be accessible and useable by the scientific community. We present a data informatics system accessible to anyone who requests it. Maintained online since 2014 (https://si-ola.inrae.fr), it is originated from the Observatory on LAkes (OLA). It contains long-term data from 4 peri-alpine lakes (Lakes Aiguebelette, Annecy, Bourget, Geneva/Léman) and 24 high-altitude lakes of the northern French Alps. We describe the generated long-term data series, the data type, the methodologies and quality control procedures, and the information system where data are made accessible. Data use is allowed under the condition of providing reference to the original source. We show here how such a platform clearly enhances data sharing and scientific collaboration. Various studies referring to these data are regularly published in peer-reviewed journals; providing in fine a better understanding of lakes’ ecosystems functioning under local and global pressures.

Abstract

International audience; Mountain lakes are integrated sentinels of changes in the terrestrial environment, where these changes threaten the quality of the ecosystem services these lakes provide, including high biodiversity, economic and leisure activities. Few evidentiary records exist of the long-term relationships between human pressure and observed impacts. Multiproxy analyses of the Lake Bénit sediment sequence, including dating, grain-size, geochemistry, pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs and chironomid assemblage reconstructions, allowed reconstruction of past environmental evolution and lake trophic changes. Combined with soil analyses of the catchment, these data provide a record of the relationships between human activities and the lake-catchment ecosystem, and show the effect of inundation of the shore previously used as pasture. From 2100 to 1100 yrs cal. BP, the catchment was forested. During the Middle Ages, grazing deforested the catchment, triggering an increase in erosion and a change in sediment sources. The lake remained oligotrophic over most of the last millennia. The trophic state changed abruptly in the 20th century with intensification and multiplication of tourist activities in the catchment, i.e., fishing, hiking, while pastoral activities decreased. The sudden eutrophication coincides with an artificial increase of the lake water level in AD 1964 to improve fishing activities. A release of phosphorus (P) from the flooded soils was observed, which may be responsible for the current eutrophication. One thousand years of grazing practices would have led to the observed P concentrations in the soils of the lake shore, transferred by the cattle to this area. Our study highlights the combined effects of past and recent activities on the current eutrophication process, and the legacy of both soils and early anthropogenic activities.

Abstract

International audience; An essential aspect of eutrophication studies is to trace the ultimate origin of phosphate ions (P-PO4) associated with the solid phase of river sediments, as certain processes can make these ions available for algae. However, this is not a straightforward task because of the diversity of allochthonous and autochthonous sources that can supply P-PO4 to river sediments as well as the existence of in-stream processes that can change the speciation of these inputs and obscure the original sources. Here, we present the results of a study designed to explore the potentials, limitations and conditions for the use of the oxygen isotope composition of phosphate (δ18Op) extracted from river sediments for this type of tracing. We first tested if the method commonly applied to soils to purify P-PO4 and to measure their δ18Op concentrations could be adapted to sediments. We then applied this method to a set of sediments collected in a river along a gradient of anthropogenic pressure and compared their isotopic signatures with those from samples that are representative of the potential P-PO4 inputs to the river system (soils and riverbank material).The results showed that following some adaptations, the purification method could be successfully transposed to river sediments with a high level of P-PO4 purification (>97%) and high δ18Op measurement repeatability and accuracy (3‰) in the sediment δ18Op value immediately downstream from the discharge point revealed the strong impact of municipal wastewater. The calculation of the theoretical equilibrium δ18Op values using the river water temperature and δ18Ow showed that the downstream sediments were in equilibrium, which was not the case for the upstream sediments. This difference could be related to the contrast between the short residence time of the transfer system in the catchment head, which can preserve the isotopic variability of the source materials, and the longer residence times and higher P bioavailability in the lower catchment, possibly fostering the recycling of P-PO4 by the biota and the equilibration of the oxygen isotope signature in P-PO4. These results demonstrate the potential of the isotopic approach to assess the sources and in-stream turnover of sedimentary P in river systems.

Abstract

International audience; Enhanced phosphorus (P) export from land into streams and lakes is a primary factor driving the expansion of deep-water hypoxia in lakes during the Anthropocene. However, the interplay of regional scale environmental stressors and the lack of long-term instrumental data often impede analyses attempting to associate changes in land cover with downstream aquatic responses. Herein, we performed a synthesis of data that link paleolimnological reconstructions of lake bottom-water oxygenation to changes in land cover/use and climate over the past 300 years to evaluate whether the spread of hypoxia in European lakes was primarily associated with enhanced P exports from growing urbanization, intensified agriculture, or climatic change. We showed that hypoxia started spreading in European lakes around CE 1850 and was greatly accelerated after CE 1900. Socioeconomic changes in Europe beginning in CE 1850 resulted in widespread urbanization, as well as a larger and more intensively cultivated surface area. However, our analysis of temporal trends demonstrated that the onset and intensification of lacustrine hypoxia were more strongly related to the growth of urban areas than to changes in agricultural areas and the application of fertilizers. These results suggest that anthropogenically triggered hypoxia in European lakes was primarily caused by enhanced P discharges from urban point sources. To date, there have been no signs of sustained recovery of bottom-water oxygenation in lakes following the enactment of European water legislation in the 1970s to 1980s, and the subsequent decrease in domestic P consumption.

Abstract

Garnier, Josette ... et. al.-- 21 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, Phosphorus (P) plays a strategic role in agricultural production as well as in the occurrence of freshwater and marine eutrophication episodes throughout the world. Moreover, the scarcity and uneven distribution of minable P resources is raising concerns about the sustainability of long-term exploitation. In this paper we analyze the P cycle in anthropic systems with an original multiscale approach (world region, country, and large basin scales) in two contrasting world regions representative of different trajectories in socioeconomic development for the 1961–2009 period: Europe (EU-27)/France and the Seine River Basin, and Asia (ASEAN-8)/Vietnam and the Red River Basin. Our approach highlights different trends in the agricultural and food production systems of the two regions. Whereas crop production increased until the 1980s in Europe and France and has stabilized thereafter, in ASEAN-8 and Vietnam it began to increase in the 1980s and it is still rising today. These trends are related to the increasing use of fertilizers, although in European countries the amount of fertilizers sharply decreased after the 1980s. On average, the total P delivered from rivers to the sea is 3 times higher for ASEAN-8 (300 kg P km−2 yr−1) than for EU-27 countries (100 kg P km−2 yr−1) and is twice as high in the Red River (200 kg P km−2 yr−1) than in the Seine River (110 kg P km−2 yr−1), with agricultural losses to water in ASEAN-8 3 times higher than in EU-27. Based on the P flux budgets, this study discusses early warnings and management options according to the particularities of the two world regions, newly integrating the perspective of surface water quality with agricultural issues (fertilizers, crop production, and surplus), food/feed exchanges, and diet, defining the so-called water-agro-food system, The FIRE-FR3020 research federation is gratefully acknowledged for the organization of an interdisciplinary workshop during which the paper emerged. Abstract

International audience; Recent improvements in the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model take account of hydrological processes controlling a variable source area (VSA). This model, SWAT-VSA, accounts for changes in the nature and extent of the VSA over the course of a hydrological cycle by considering global catchment storage capacity, which varies with soil moisture between threshold values whose spatial distribution is determined by topography. The objective of this work is to evaluate the contribution of several aquifers with specific storage capacities to global catchment storage, its dynamics; and subsequent effects on VSA and non-point-source pollution. For this purpose, a method called SWAT-mVSA (SWAT-multi VSA) was used in a catchment representative of the agricultural conditions of large perialpine lakes to calculate soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) fluxes because SRP has a major influence on receiving waters. SWAT-mVSA predicted components of the hydrological balance and SRP fluxes more accurately than SWAT-VSA. This underlines the importance of VSAs in mobilizing and transporting non-point-source pollutants such as nutrients, pesticides, or bacteria.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this study is to investigate phosphorus (P) species modifications triggered by soil genesis and mountain ecosystem development after glacial retreat using a lake sediment archive (Lake Anterne, North French Alps). Five lake sediment samples, representative of different stages of soil and ecosystem development, were selected for P speciation analyses. Furthermore, a sequence of current soils from the catchment was analyzed to better constrain our interpretations of the lacustrine archive. Synchrotron techniques (X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) mapping and P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy) were applied to lake sediments, soils, and standards (mineral and organic) to distinguish between different P species. The results show that soil development during the first millennia of the Holocene triggered increased P species diversity. At the onset of the Holocene, P was present as apatite when rocks and leptosols dominated the catchment. Pedogenic processes then led to apatite dissolution and the formation of large amounts of P on metal/clay-organic complexes. P geochemistry during the main step of soil genesis (early leptosols dominated by apatite, low weathered cambisols with P mainly adsorbed on iron oxides, highly weathered podzols with large amounts of P on Al/Fe/clay organic complexes) is thus clearly recorded in lake sediments. P K-edge XANES spectroscopy is particularly relevant as qualitative method to study P species in soils and lake sediments at high spatial resolution. Such resolution is needed to reveal the diversity of small P particles and like this better characterize the P cycle and improve our understanding of ecosystem evolution.

Abstract

International audience; The spatiotemporal distribution of biochemical varves spanning the last 150 yr was investigated using 40 cores collected over a depth gradient in a large subalpine lake--Lake Bourget--in the French Alps. Four-dimensional sedimentological, biological, and geochemical analyses show that varve preservation can be used as a reliable proxy to reconstruct annual-to-decadal oscillations of hypoxia in large lakes. The volume of hypoxic waters was calculated by integrating the volume between the lake bottom and the depth of the shallowest varve-bearing core for each year. Although Lake Bourget bottom waters have been oxic over the last 9000 yr, severe hypoxia has occurred only since 1933 ± 1. The volume of hypoxic waters showed, thereafter, a succession of pronounced fluctuations, leading to an increase of 8% of the total lake volume in the 1960s, a decline in the 1980s, and a second, ongoing increase since 1990. Whereas the initial onset of persistent hypoxic conditions could be attributed to eutrophication due to nutrient-rich inputs from sewage water and/or diffuse contamination, the later fluctuations were also driven by climatic factors, i.e., flooding, rising air temperatures, and phosphorus-independent changes in primary production. Hence, cumulative effects related to global warming seem to have driven hypolimnetic hypoxic conditions since equilibrium was initially disrupted due to a drastic shift in the trophic state.

Abstract

Microbial contamination of surface waters frequently occurs on permanent natural grasslands subject to extensive grazing. Management of these problems requires developing methods to identify critical source areas that are responsible of significant losses of fecal microorganisms. In this study, GIS analysis of watersheds was used to calculate the flow of fecal bacteria (Escherichia coli) to the outflow of a watershed by summing bacterial flows in runoff from pixels containing cowpats. Calculations were performed in two steps: (i) identification of pixels with bacteria and runoff by modeling the distribution of cowpats and variable sources of surface runoff, and (ii) parameterization by inverse analysis of deterministic and stochastic functions for bacterial emission from cowpats and for retention during their transmission to the watershed outflow. During bacterial transport in water flow, bacterial retention on the soil surface has a large influence. Despite this effect, bacterial concentration in runoff remains high. In general, cowpat age, runoff volumes and the location and proportions of bacteria-emitting and non-emitting surfaces determine critical source areas and bacterial flows at the watershed outflow. These data are discussed in terms of feasibility of solutions for management of watercourses and grazing practices.

Abstract

International audience; Our knowledge of Escherichia coli (E. coli) ecology in the field is very limited in the case of dairy alpine grassland soils. Here, our objective was to monitor field survival of E. coli in cow pats and underlying soils in four different alpine pasture units, and to determine whether the soil could constitute an environmental reservoir. E. coli was enumerated by MPN using a selective medium. E. coli survived well in cow pats (10(7) to 10(8) cells g(-1) dry pat), but cow pats disappeared within about 2 mo. In each pasture unit, constant levels of E. coli (10(3) to 10(4) cells g(-1) dry soil) were recovered from all topsoil (0-5 cm) samples regardless of the sampling date, that is, under the snow cover, immediately after snow melting, or during the pasture season (during and after the decomposition of pats). In deeper soil layers below the root zone (5-25 cm), E. coli persistence varied according to soil type, with higher numbers recovered in poorly-drained soils (10(3) to 10(4) cells g(-1) dry soil) than in well-drained soils (< 10(2) cells g(-1) dry soil). A preliminary analysis of 38 partial uidA sequences of E. coli from pat and soils highlighted a cluster containing sequences only found in this work. Overall, this study raises the possibility that fecal E. coli could have formed a naturalized (sub)population, which is now part of the indigenous soil community of alpine pasture grasslands, the soil thus representing an environmental reservoir of E. coli.

Abstract

Recommending the use of ‘‘grass buffer strips’’ to control diffuse P transfer has become well accepted among extension advisors, agricultural consultants, planners, and other practitioners that influence the structure of the agricultural landscape. These grassed areas are put in place to capture the P contained in runoff from source fields. They are designed to function as a filter and a sediment trap although it is often unclear what the long-term disposition of the accumulated P may be. The objective of this work was to determine if the available scientific literature justifies the continued recommendation of this approach in the prevention of phosphorus movement from agricultural soils to surface waters. We employed a theoretical analysis of the mechanisms of the buffering effect and the specific behaviour of phosphorus in typical grass buffer strips to establish the critical set of literature applicable to this question. An adequate body of literature exists describing many aspects of P dynamics and the short-term functioning of grass buffer strips over their seasonal cycles. Despite variable results in a diversity of landscape contexts, overall, the use of grass buffer strips appears to provide useful short-term functions in the reduction of P transport to surface waters. Long-term benefits remain questionable given the relatively short-term use of this approach in P reduction and the lack of long-term experimental results, but this current lack of data is not sufficient to deter the continued incorporation of grass buffer strips in the landscape of French agricultural. Additionally, a more comprehensive conceptual model integrating the shortterm functioning of grass buffer strips with seasonal cycles and the long-term consequences of cumulative storage emerged from our synthesis.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to achieve a better understanding of the behavior of fecal coliform populations on the vegetation and in the soil after slurry spreading in environmental conditions, typical of vegetative growth period in mountain hay meadows. Changes in fecal coliform populations on the vegetation and in the soil were monitored in situ for 3 months after slurry spreading on 9 plots. The variations found in populations are related to the agricultural, soil. and climatic characteristics of plots and to the moisture regime of soils. These observations are compared with laboratory experiments on undisturbed soil microcosms. In absence of water flux, survival durations recorded in the laboratory and in the field are of the same order of magnitude. The data enable us to pinpoint the influence of various factors affecting the decline and transfer of fecal bacteria in the plant-soil system and consequently to discuss the risk management of water contamination by agriculture.

Abstract

Enzymatic liberation of molybdate reactive phosphorus (MRP) (equivalent to orthophosphate) from sediment extracts, obtained from sediments sampled from different parts of a subwatershed of Lake Leman, was investigated. Several hydrolytic enzymes; alkaline phosphatase, phosphodiesterase, RNase, DNase and phytase were used alone or in combination. As expected the release of MRP by combination of alkaline phosphatase with the other enzymes was more efficient than by alkaline phosphatase alone. In all cases, MRP enzymatically released accounted for less than 4% of the total phosphorus in the sediment but represented between 5 and 23% of the organic phosphorus. The highest percentage was obtained with the sediments polluted by domestic sewage. Traces of MRP were liberated by phytase only with the sediment of forest and agricultural origin. Phosphomonoesters were detected in each sediment as well as nucleic acids (except in the natural sediment). This study has shown that it seems possible to characterize organic phosphorus of sediments using this procedure.

18. Analytical Electron-Microscopy Fractionation of Fine and Colloidal Particulate-Phosphorus in Riverbed and Suspended Sediments.

Abstract

Abstract  The impact particulate-phosphorus (particulate-P) has on eutrophication of aquatic systems that greatly depends on its composition. As a result, analysis methods for evaluating particulate-P speciation must be capable of identifying and/or quantifying the wide range of forms particulate-P can take. In the present study, we compare the particulate P speciation of the fine and colloidal fractions of riverbed sediment and suspended matter from two rivers in the Lake Geneva basin (French Alps) as determined with chemical extractions to results of a combined Transmission Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Detection (TEM–EDS) analysis of the same samples. TEM–EDS provides semi-quantitative information about the distribution of P throughout the solid fraction of a sample and on the diversity of carrier phases, which are identified by their morphology and stochiometry. EDS-detectable quantities of phosphorus were found in 15–35% of the particles in the samples analyzed. As expected, particulate-P existed in a wide variety of forms, mostly associated with Al, Fe, Ca and Si. Some types of particles, often well-crystallized phosphate minerals, had high P contents (10–30%), but the dominant carrier phases of P were diffuse matrices of particles with low P contents ( [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
