Titanium implants are widely used in dental, orthopedic, and reconstructive surgery. A series of studies has indicated that cells can respond not only to the chemical properties of the biomaterial, but also, in particular, to the changes in surface topography. Nanoporous materials remain in focus of scientific queries due to their exclusive properties and broad applications. One such material is nanostructured titanium oxide with highly ordered, mutually perpendicular nanopores. Nanoporous anodic titanium dioxide (TiO2) films were fabricated by a three-step anodization process in propan-1,2,3-triol-based electrolyte containing fluoride ions. Adipose-derived stem cells offer many interesting opportunities for regenerative medicine. The important goal of tissue engineering is to direct stem cell differentiation into a desired cell lineage. The influence of nanoporous TiO2 with pore diameters of 80 and 108 nm on cell response, growth, viability, and ability to differentiate into osteoblastic lineage of human adipose-derived progenitors was explored. Cells were harvested from the subcutaneous abdominal fat tissue by a simple, minimally invasive, and inexpensive method. Our results indicate that anodic nanostructured TiO2 is a safe and nontoxic biomaterial. In vitro studies demonstrated that the nanotopography induced and enhanced osteodifferentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells from the abdominal subcutaneous fat tissue. Abstract

Introduction. The problem of high levels of stress among medical students is a real problem and its prevalence and mechanisms have not yet been fully explored. It was found that there are only a few publications concerning the influence of urban and rural settings of the medical students in relation to stress, coping styles and personality tendencies. Aim. Analysis of the coping mechanisms and personality types of medical students of rural and urban origin based on the survey of the students of the Medical University in Lublin (MUL), south-east Poland. Material and methods. The study was conducted with a group of 570 medical students from MUL, aged 19–35. Average medical student age: 22. Two questionnaires were used: CISS and SCID II for the evaluation of the coping styles and the personality tendency structures. Results. The place of origin significantly influenced tendencies to the occurrence of specific personality types. The schizotypal, borderline and narcissistic personality tendencies mostly presented in big cities, less in small cities, and the least among students of rural origin. Dependent personality tendencies were significantly more common among females. The coping styles based on avoidance and on looking for the social contacts were significantly more common among females than males. Conclusions. Medical students of urban and rural origin were differentiated in terms of personality structure tendencies, concerning personalities: schizotypal, narcissistic and borderline. The tendencies to the dependent personality were also significantly more common among females than males. Two types of coping styles, based on avoidance and looking for social contacts, were significantly more common among females than males.

15. Transport properties of annealed CdSe colloidal nanocrystal solids.

Abstract

Transport properties of artificial solids composed of colloidal CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) are studied from 6 to 250 K, before and after annealing. After the solids are annealed, three changes are observed. First, transmission electron micrographs show that the separation between NCs decreases with annealing. Second, the optical absorption spectrum changes: the excitonic peaks of the NC solids shift to lower energies and broaden with annealing. These redshifts can result from the change of the dielectric environment around the NCs. Last, annealing results in greatly enhanced dark current and photocurrent. This increased current can be attributed to the enhancement of interdot tunneling caused by the decreased separation between NCs and by chemical changes in their organic cap. In addition, the dark current is an exponential function of the applied electric field and it is only weakly temperature dependent. Our measurements also suggest that Coulomb interactions between charges on neighboring NCs play an important role in the tunneling current. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

© 2016 Nature America, Inc. We analyzed 3,872 common genetic variants across the ESR1 locus (encoding estrogen receptor α) in 118,816 subjects from three international consortia. We found evidence for at least five independent causal variants, each associated with different phenotype sets, including estrogen receptor (ER + or ER -) and human ERBB2 (HER2 + or HER2 -) tumor subtypes, mammographic density and tumor grade. The best candidate causal variants for ER - tumors lie in four separate enhancer elements, and their risk alleles reduce expression of ESR1, RMND1 and CCDC170, whereas the risk alleles of the strongest candidates for the remaining independent causal variant disrupt a silencer element and putatively increase ESR1 and RMND1 expression.

22. NK cells in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma after cessation of intensive chemotherapy

Abstract

Intensive, combination chemotherapy for malignant diseases causes a profound immunosuppression, which persists for the whole treatment period and after its completion. Impairment of the NK cells status may increase the risk of severe, disseminated infections and cancer. The aim of the study was the investigation of recovery of NK cells after cessation of intensive chemotherapy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The number of CD3 - CD16+CD56+ cells in peripheral blood and NK cell cytotoxic activity were assessed in 23 children with ALL and 7 children with NHL at 2 weeks and 12 months after the cessation of intensive chemotherapy and in 15 healthy subjects. Absolute leukocyte, lymphocyte and NK cell counts and the percentage of NK cells in children with ALL were significantly lower than in control subjects both at 2 weeks and 12 months after intensive treatment. Additionally, the absolute numbers of leukocytes and lymphocytes decreased significantly after 12 months of observations in comparison to the initial time-point. In children with non-Hodgkin lymphoma at 2 weeks and 12 months after intensive treatment only absolute lymphocyte counts were significantly lower than values in healthy children. The absolute number, the percentage and cytotoxic activity of NK cells were comparable with values in the control group both at the initial and at the last time-point. The occurrence of infections during the 12 months of observations in patients with ALL were higher than in children with NHL and as many as eight of them were hospitalized because of severe infections. The differences between the ALL and NHL patients may be connected with the milder immunosuppressive effect of chemotherapy in the non-Hodgkin lymphoma since the children recovered from acute lymphoblastic leukemia remain with persistent defect of NK cells. It is then recommended that ALL children should be supervised with respect to an increased susceptibility to infections.

Abstract

Countercurrent chromatography (CCC) is a generic term covering all forms of liquid-liquid chromatography that use a support-free liquid stationary phase held in place by a simple centrifugal or complex centrifugal force field. Biphasic liquid systems are used with one liquid phase being the stationary phase and the other being the mobile phase. Although initiated almost 30 years ago, CCC lacked reliable columns. This is changing now, and the newly designed centrifuges appearing on the market make excellent CCC columns. This review focuses on the advantages of a liquid stationary phase and addresses the chromatographic theory of CCC. The main difference with classical liquid chromatography (LC) is the variable volume of the stationary phase. There are mainly two different ways to obtain a liquid stationary phase using centrifugal forces, the hydrostatic way and the hydrodynamic way. These two kinds of CCC columns are described and compared. The reported applications of CCC in analytical chemistry and comparison with other separation and enrichment methods show that the technique can be successfully used in the analysis of plants and other natural products, for the separation of biochemicals and pharmaceuticals, for the separation of alkaloids from medical herbs, in food analysis, etc. On the basis of the studies of the last two decades, recommendations are also given for the application of CCC in trace inorganic analysis and in radioanalytical chemistry.

Abstract

Introduction: Overweight and obesity are causes for numerous non-communicable chronic diseases. In recent years their incidence have become a major epidemiological problem both in Poland and many other countries. Purpose: Evaluation of the current situation of the overweight and obesity prevalence among adults in Poland and changes in this regard in the years 1983-2005. Material and Methods: Review of the countrywide research and research in selected towns and regions on overweight and obesity occurrence conducted in Poland over the last 20 years. Results: On the basis of national data for Poland, the incidence of overweight is estimated to be 39-40% among men and 28-29% among women, while the percentage of obese men and women is 16-21% and 19-22% respectively. The incidence of overweight and obesity differs with respect to gender, age, environment, the region of the country and social status. Excessive body weight is often observed in patients treated in hospitals. Abdominal obesity is very common and according to the ATP lII guidelines, affects 16-28% of men and 35-40% of women, whereas under more strict IDF criteria it involves almost 40% of adult males and almost a half of adult females. Conclusions: Results from numerous surveys conducted in the last few years indicate growth of the incidence of overweight and obesity, especially among men. Abstract

The obesity epidemic is one of the most serious public health problems across many countries. In Poland more than half of the adult population has excessive body weight, while approx. 20% are obese. 15-20% of children and adolescents suffer from excessive body weight, while 4% of them are obese. Moreover, the number of overweight or obese children is growing alarmingly. Obesity can lead to many serious health consequences. Though the most serious disorders are cardiovascular diseases, diabetes type 2 and some cancers. In the nearest future diseases related to obesity will probably become the main cause of death in many countries. This may lead to shorter average life expectancy. The treatment costs of obesity and related diseases are constantly increasing. The most important preventive measure aiming at curbing the effects of obesity involves lifestyle change, including a change in diet and physical activity. The best results should be obtained by multifaceted programmes, which cover activities aiming at the improvement of both diet and physical activity. Due to the spread of the obesity epidemic, the countries of WHO European Region signed the European Charter on Counteracting Obesity, in which they declared their commitment to combat obesity. Activities aiming at combating obesity in Poland should be closely connected with the implementation of the National Programme for the Prevention of Overweight, Obesity and Non-Communicable Diseases through Diet and Improved Physical Activity, which will be implemented in 2007-2016. Abstract

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.) is one of the most important medicinal plants. The fungi infesting its seeds may negatively influence their germination and health-promoting properties. However, there is no standard method for S. marianum seed health testing. The aim of this study was to find a suitable method for the detection and identification of fungi in/on milk thistle seeds. The following tests were used: deep-freeze blotter test, blotter test with an addition of mannitol, blotter test with an addition of polyethylene glycol, agar test on potato-dextrose agar (PDA), agar test on PDA after seed disinfection, agar test on reduced PDA and an agar test on reduced PDA after seed disinfection. Seeds were incubated for 10 and 14 days. The most prevalent fungi were: Alternaria alternata, Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium spp., Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., Rhizopus nigricans and Verticillium spp. A deep-freeze blotter test followed by a blotter test with an addition of mannitol and a blotter test with an addition of polyethylene glycol performed for 14 days could be recommended for the further study of milk thistle seed health testing, as they favoured the growth of the most important fungi.

Autorka artykułu zwraca uwagę czytelnika na problemy wynikające z prywatyzacji i restrukturyzacji przedsiębiorstw państwowych, które przekładają się na trudności z tworzeniem w Polsce sektora prywatnego. M. Jarosz punktuje powstałe w wyniku procesu problemy systemowe, m. in rozwój tzw. „szarej strefy” aktywności ekonomicznej czy nierówności materialne pomiędzy mieszkańcami wsi, a mieszkańcami dużych aglomeracji. Artykuł wymienia także patologie związane z działalnością instytucji i władzy takie jak: skorumpowanie urzędników państwowych (zwłaszcza członków rad nadzorczych spółek Skarbu Państwa, których działania były przedmiotem pogłębionych badań autorki) a tym samym korumpowanie systemu sprawowania władzy, kapitalizm polityczny czy nepotyzm. W tekście ukazany został również problem przejawów dyskryminacji i uprzywilejowania wybranych grup społecznych. Narzędziem skutecznie umożliwiającym takie działania jest według autorki lustracja, która służy do eliminacji przeciwników politycznych i destabilizacji społecznej. Na zakończenie M. Jarosz pozostawia otwartą dyskusję na temat możliwości poprawy wizerunku polskich elit rządzących.

This article presents an abstract of the research paper "Occurrence of Different Histological Types of Meningiomas and Their Relationship Between Topography, Sex and Age of Patients-10-Years Observation," which was discussed in the 13th Conference of the Polish Association of Neuropathologist. Meningiomas are a group of neoplasms growing from meningothelium cells. There are 15 histological subtypes of those tumors. This study analysed the occurrence of different histological types of meningiomas and their relationship between topography, sex and age of patients.

Abstract

Abstract: A novel amperometric sensor based on silver nanowire (Ag NW) array was fabricated and used for a rapid and sensitive detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The 50-nm in diameter nanowires were synthesized by electrodeposition of silver in the nanopores of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. At an applied potential of −0.2V vs. SCE, the developed Ag NW array electrode exhibited electrocatalytic response toward the reduction of H2O2 at a very wide range of H2O2 concentrations and three significantly linear sections in a calibration plot were observed. The determination of H2O2 with the highest sensitivity of about 0.0266μAcm−2 μM−1 is possible in the concentration range from 0.1mM to 3.1mM with a detection limit of 29.2μM. Moreover, the proposed sensor exhibited relatively high sensibility, good reproducibility, and satisfying long-term stability. The developed Ag NW array sensor excluded the interference from substances typically present in the biological samples such as ascorbic acid (AA), uric acid (UA), ethanol (EtOH), glucose (G) and oxalate ions. Abstract

Background: \ud Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists differ in chemical structure, duration of action, and in their effects on clinical outcomes. The cardiovascular effects of once-weekly albiglutide in type 2 diabetes are unknown. We aimed to determine the safety and efficacy of albiglutide in preventing cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke.\ud \ud Methods: \ud We did a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial in 610 sites across 28 countries. We randomly assigned patients aged 40 years and older with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (at a 1:1 ratio) to groups that either received a subcutaneous injection of albiglutide (30–50 mg, based on glycaemic response and tolerability) or of a matched volume of placebo once a week, in addition to their standard care. Investigators used an interactive voice or web response system to obtain treatment assignment, and patients and all study investigators were masked to their treatment allocation. We hypothesised that albiglutide would be non-inferior to placebo for the primary outcome of the first occurrence of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke, which was assessed in the intention-to-treat population. If non-inferiority was confirmed by an upper limit of the 95% CI for a hazard ratio of less than 1·30, closed testing for superiority was prespecified. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02465515.\ud \ud Findings: \ud Patients were screened between July 1, 2015, and Nov 24, 2016. 10 793 patients were screened and 9463 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to groups: 4731 patients were assigned to receive albiglutide and 4732 patients to receive placebo. On Nov 8, 2017, it was determined that 611 primary endpoints and a median follow-up of at least 1·5 years had accrued, and participants returned for a final visit and discontinuation from study treatment; the last patient visit was on March 12, 2018. These 9463 patients, the intention-to-treat population, were evaluated for a median duration of 1·6 years and were assessed for the primary outcome. Abstract

This study examines the influence of different grain size fractions of coal fly ash on the properties of clay-cement mortars used in flood levee construction. Dry aerodynamic separation and mesh sieving were used to obtain ultrafine, fine, and medium fractions of high-calcium and silica fly ash. The experimental results reveal that the rheological properties of fresh mortars are significantly influenced by these fractions. High-calcium fly ash mortars exhibit high reactivity and rapid increase in viscosity, with finer fractions showing the highest reactivity. Silica ashes show increased reactivity in the later stages of suspension hardening. Their spherical shape contributes to reducing internal friction during flow in initial technological operations. Furthermore, the compressive strength of hardened mortars improves as the particle size decreases for both ashes, resulting in a dense and uniform microstructure. The separation and fractionation of fly ashes contribute to the obtaining of fractions that influence the parameters of clay-cement suspension application on different scales. Abstract

Delirium is a disorder of consciousness and it is caused by acute brain disfunction in the course of, e.g., severe somatic condition, intoxication or withdrawal syndrome. Delirium management is based on the treatment of the state that caused disturbance in central nervous system. Severe delirium syndromes such as agitation, disorganized behavior or hallucinations require additional pharmacological treatment with antypsychotics. Aripiprazole is used in treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and Tourette syndrome, but also off-label in delirium. A systematic review of databases was carried out and results were limited to case reports, clinical trials and randomized controlled trials. There is evidence that there is no difference in effectiveness of aripiprazole compared to haloperidol and other atypical neuroleptics. Aripirazole could be a better option in particular groups of patients due to its safer cardiological and metabolic profile as well as better tolerance of treatment. However, data from clinical findings are still insufficient to recommend a routine use of aripiprazole in the treatment of delirium. Therefore, further investigations are necessary to work out new strategy of managing delirium syndrome.

48. Thermal Studies of Fractionated Lignite and Brown Coal Fly Ashes.

Abstract

Coal fly ash (CFA), a by-product of coal combustion, is a valuable raw material for various applications. However, the heterogeneous nature of the composition and properties of CFA provides challenges to its effective usage and utilisation. This study investigates the thermal behaviour of the fly ashes of lignite (FA1) and brown coal (FA2) and their fractions obtained by dry aerodynamic separation. Thermal analysis techniques, including thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and evolved gas analysis (EGA), were used to characterise the behaviour of the fly ash fractions while heating up to 1250 °C. The results reveal distinct differences in the thermal behaviour between ash types and among their different size fractions. For the FA1 ashes, the concentration of calcium-rich compounds and the level of recrystallisation at 950 °C increased with the decrease in particle size. The most abundant detected newly formed minerals were anhydrite, gehlenite, and anorthite, while coarser fractions were rich in quartz and mullite. For the FA2 ashes, the temperature of the onset of melting and agglomeration decreased with decreasing particle size and was already observed at 995 °C. Coarser fractions mostly remain unchanged, with a slight increase in quartz, mullite, and hematite content. Recrystallisation takes place in less extension compared to the FA1 ashes. The findings demonstrate that the aerodynamic separation of fly ashes into different size fractions can produce materials with varied thermal properties and reactivity, which can be used for specific applications. This study highlights the importance of thermal analysis in characterising fly ash properties and understanding their potential for utilisation in various applications involving thermal treatment or exposure to high-temperature conditions. Further research on advanced separation techniques and the in-depth characterisation of fly ash fractions is necessary to obtain materials with desired thermal properties and identify their most beneficial applications.

49. Investigation of the Influence of Machining Parameters and Surface Roughness on the Wettability of the Al6082 Surfaces Produced with WEDM.

Abstract

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a non-conventional machining technique, capable of processing any kind of conductive material. Recently, it has been successfully utilized for producing hydrophobic characteristics in inherently hydrophilic metallic materials. In this work, Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) was utilized for producing hydrophobic characteristics on the surface of the aluminum alloy 6082, and various parameters that can affect wettability were investigated. Adopting an orthogonal Taguchi approach, the effects of the process parameter values of peak current, pulse-on time, and gap voltage on the contact angles of the machined surfaces were investigated. After machining, all samples were observed to have obtained hydrophobic properties, reaching contact angles up to 132°. The peak current was identified as the most influential parameter regarding the contact angle, while the gap voltage was the less influential parameter. A contact angle variation of 30° was observed throughout different combinations of machining parameters. Each combination of the machining parameters resulted in a distinct surface morphology. The samples with moderate roughness values (3.4 μm > Sa > 5.7 μm) were found to be more hydrophobic than the samples with high or low values, where the contact angle was measured under 115°. In addition, the finite element modeling of the experimental setup, with parametric surfaces of uniform random and Perlin noise types of roughness, was implemented. Time dependent simulations coupling phase field and laminar flow for the modelingof the wetting of surfaces with different surface roughness characteristics showed that an increase in the Sa roughness and total wetted area can lead to an increase in the contact angle. The combination of experimental and computational results suggests that the complexity of the wettability outcomes of aluminum alloy surfaces processed with WEDM lies in the interplay between variations of the surface chemical composition, roughness, micro/nano morphology, and the surface capability of forming a composite air/water interface.

Abstract

As the second leading cause of death worldwide, neoplastic diseases are one of the biggest challenges for public health care. Contemporary medicine seeks potential tools for fighting cancer within nanomedicine, as various nanomaterials can be used for both diagnostics and therapies. Among those of particular interest are superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), due to their unique magnetic properties,. However, while the number of new SPIONs, suitably modified and functionalized, designed for medical purposes, has been gradually increasing, it has not yet been translated into the number of approved clinical solutions. The presented review covers various issues related to SPIONs of potential theranostic applications. It refers to structural considerations (the nanoparticle core, most often used modifications and functionalizations) and the ways of characterizing newly designed nanoparticles. The discussion about the phenomenon of protein corona formation leads to the conclusion that the scarcity of proper tools to investigate the interactions between SPIONs and human serum proteins is the reason for difficulties in introducing them into clinical applications. The review emphasizes the importance of understanding the mechanism behind the protein corona formation, as it has a crucial impact on the effectiveness of designed SPIONs in the physiological environment., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)
