Abstract

The aim of this work is the optimization of ultrasonic methods in the non-destructive testing of sintered porcelain tiles containing defects. For this reason, a silicon nitride ball, carbon black and PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate) were imbedded in porcelain tile granules before pressing to make special defects in tiles. After sintering at 1220ºC, the time of flight of the ultrasonic waves and ultrasonic signal amplitudes through the sintered porcelain tiles were measured by a contact ultrasonic transducer operating on pulse-echo mode. This method can allow for defect detection using the A-scan. The results of the test showed that the amplitude of the received peak for a defective part is smaller than for a part which has no defects. Depending on the size, shape and position of the defect, its peak can be detected. Additionally, an immersion pulse-echo C-scan method was also used to differentiate between defects in porcelain tiles. By using this technique, it is possible to determine the place and shape of defects. To support the results of the ultrasonic investigation, a SEM characterization was also made.El fin principal de este trabajo es la optimización de métodos ultrasónicos en la prueba no destructiva de azulejos sinterizados de porcelana que contienen defectos. Por lo tanto, bolas del nitruro de silicio, negros de carbón y PMMA (polimetilmetacrilato) fueron encajados en gránulos del azulejo de porcelana antes de presionar para hacer defectos especiales en azulejos. Después de sinterizado en 1220ºC, el tiempo de vuelo de las ondas ultrasónicas fue medido a través del azulejo sinterizado de la porcelana. El tiempo del vuelo de ondas ultrasónicas fue medido por un transductor de contacto ultrasónico operando en modo eco-pulso. Este método puede permitir la detección de defectos usando escaneo-A. Los resultados de la prueba demostraron que la amplitud del pico recibido por partes defectuosas es más pequeño que la parte que no tiene defectos. Dependiendo del tamaño, de la forma y de la posición del defecto. Su pico puede ser detectado. Además, un eco-pulse de inmersión de del método pulse-echo escaneo-C también fue utilizado para distinguir defectos en azulejos de porcelana. Usando esta técnica es posible determinar el lugar y la forma de los defectos. Para apoyar resultados de la investigación ultrasónica, una caracterización SEM también fue realizada.

Abstract

In this work is demonstrated the possible application of paraffin wax suspensions for shaping complex ceramic parts by injection moulding or extrusion. These suspensions were prepared from ceramic or metal-ceramic powders. Thermal debinding as well as mechanical properties after sintering (bending strength σB and fracture toughness KIc) were also evaluated.En este trabajo se demuestra la posible aplicación de suspensiones parafínicas para la formación mediante inyección o extrusión de piezas cerámicas con forma compleja. Las suspensiones fueron preparadas a partir de polvos cerámicos y metal-cerámicos. La eliminación de los componentes orgánicos así como las propiedades mecánicas después del sinterizado (resistencia a la ruptura σB y tenacidad a la fractura KIc) también fueron evaluadas.

11. Variants in the L12 linker domain of KRT10 are causal to atypical epidermolytic ichthyosis.

Abstract

Epidermolytic ichthyosis (EI) is a type of congenital ichthyosis, characterized by erythema and blistering at birth followed by hyperkeratosis. EI is caused by pathogenic variants in the genes KRT1 and KRT10, encoding the proteins keratin 1 (KRT1) and keratin 10 (KRT10), respectively, and is primarily transmitted by autosomal‐dominant inheritance, although recessive inheritance caused by nonsense variants in KRT10 is also described. The keratins form a network of intermediate filaments and are a structural component of the cytoskeleton, giving strength and resilience to the skin. We present three cases of mild EI caused by pathogenic KRT10 variations in the L12 linker domain. To our knowledge, this is the first time L12 linker domain pathogenic variants are identified in KRT10 for EI. The aim of this study was to identify gene variants for patients with EI in KRT1 or KRT10. To establish the pathogenicity of the found variations in KRT10, we evaluated all patients and available family members clinically. Genetic analyses were performed using Sanger sequencing. Vectors containing wild‐type or mutated forms of KRT10 were transfected into HaCaT cells and analyzed by high‐resolution confocal microscopy. Genetic analysis of KRT10 identified a heterozygous de novo variant c.910G>A p.(Val304Met) in family 1, a familial heterozygous variant c.911T>C p.(Val304Ala) in family 2, and a familial heterozygous variant c.917T>C p.(Met306Thr) in family 3. All identified missense variants were located in the L12 linker domain of KRT10. In vitro study of aggregate formation of the missense variants in KRT10 only showed a very mild and not quantifiable aggregate formation in the KRT10 network, compared with the wild‐type sequence. We report three different novel missense variants in the L12 linker domain of KRT10 in patients with an atypical, milder form of EI resembling peeling skin syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: We evaluate nationwide perioperative outcomes of complex EVAR and assess the volume-outcome association of complex EVAR. Summary of Background Data: Endovascular treatment with fenestrated (FEVAR) or branched (BEVAR) endografts is progressively used for excluding complex aortic aneurysms (complex AAs). It is unclear if a volumeoutcome association exists in endovascular treatment of complex AAs (complex EVAR). Methods: All patients prospectively registered in the Dutch Surgical Aneurysm Audit who underwent complex EVAR (FEVAR or BEVAR) between January 2016 and January 2020 were included. The effect of annual hospital volume on perioperative mortality was examined using multivariable logistic regression analyses. Patients were stratified into quartiles based on annual hospital volume to determine hospital volume categories. Results: We included 694 patients (539 FEVAR patients, 155 BEVAR patients). Perioperative mortality following FEVAR was 4.5% and 5.2% following BEVAR. Postoperative complication rates were 30.1% and 48.7%, respectively. The first quartile hospitals performed

Abstract

1. Wind turbines and power lines can cause bird mortality due to collision or electrocution. The biodiversity impacts of energy infrastructure (EI) can be minimised through effective landscape-scale planning and mitigation. The identification of high-vulnerability areas is urgently needed to assess potential cumulative impacts of EI while supporting the transition to zero carbon energy. 2. We collected GPS location data from 1,454 birds from 27 species susceptible to collision within Europe and North Africa and identified areas where tracked birds are most at risk of colliding with existing EI. Sensitivity to EI development was estimated for wind turbines and power lines by calculating the proportion of GPS flight locations at heights where birds were at risk of collision and ac-counting for species' specific susceptibility to collision. We mapped the maxi-mum collision sensitivity value obtained across all species, in each 5 × 5 km grid cell, across Europe and North Africa. Vulnerability to collision was obtained by overlaying the sensitivity surfaces with density of wind turbines and transmission power lines. 3. Results: Exposure to risk varied across the 27 species, with some species flying consistently at heights where they risk collision. For areas with sufficient tracking data within Europe and North Africa, 13.6% of the area was classified as high sensitivity to wind turbines and 9.4% was classified as high sensitivity to trans-mission power lines. Sensitive areas were concentrated within important migratory corridors and along coastlines. Hotspots of vulnerability to collision with wind turbines and transmission power lines (2018 data) were scattered across the study region with highest concentrations occurring in central Europe, near the strait of Gibraltar and the Bosporus in Turkey. 4. Synthesis and applications. We identify the areas of Europe and North Africa that are most sensitive for the specific populations of birds for which sufficient GPS tracking data at high spatial resolution were available. We also map vulnerability hotspots where mitigation at existing EI should be prioritised to reduce collision risks. As tracking data availability improves our method could be applied to more species and areas to help reduce bird-EI conflicts.

Abstract

We report on the kinetic inductance detector (KID) array focal plane assembly design for the Terahertz Intensity Mapper (TIM). Each of the 2 arrays consists of 4 wafer-sized dies (quadrants), and the overall assembly must satisfy thermal and mechanical requirements, while maintaining high optical efficiency and a suitable electromagnetic environment for the KIDs. In particular, our design manages to strictly maintain a 50 $\mathrm{μm}$ air gap between the array and the horn block. We have prototyped and are now testing a sub-scale assembly which houses a single quadrant for characterization before integration into the full array. The initial test result shows a $>$95\% yield, indicating a good performance of our TIM detector packaging design., 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Journal of Low Temperature Physics

31. Psychometric Evaluation of a Dutch Version of the Mini PAS-ADD for Assessing Psychiatric Disorders in Adults with Different Levels of Intellectual Disability

Abstract

Background: People with intellectual disabilities (ID) have an increased vulnerability to develop psychiatric problems. Moreover, the early recognition and the accurate diagnosis of psychiatric disorders in the population of persons with ID are challenging. Method: A Dutch version of the Mini PAS-ADD, which is a screening instrument for identification of mental health problems in people with ID, was evaluated in terms of internal consistency, interinformant reliability, item grouping and criterion validity based on a large-scale random sample ("n" = 377) and a clinical sample ("n" = 99) of adults with ID. Results: The Dutch version of the Mini PAS-ADD showed moderate internal consistency, and moderate concordance among informants. Both aspects of the reliability were comparable for different levels of ID. A factor analysis largely confirmed the scale structure. Concurrent validity with the Reiss Screen for Maladaptive Behavior was high for the Depression, Psychosis and Autism scale. The outcome of the criterion-validity analysis indicated high specificity. The sensitivity for specific psychiatric disorders by the corresponding scales was moderate, but the general sensitivity for the presence of psychopathology on the basis of any of the scales was satisfying. Conclusions: The present research reconfirmed the use of the Mini PAS-ADD as a primary screening device for the identification of mental health problems among people with ID. Abstract

Over the past decade, many health care systems across the Global North have implemented elements of market mechanisms while also dealing with the consequences of the financial crisis. Although effects of these two developments have been researched separately, their combined impact on the governance of health care organizations has received less attention. The aim of this study is to understand how health care reforms and the financial crisis together shaped new roles and interactions within health care. The Netherlands – where dynamics between health care organizations and their financial stakeholders (i.e., banks and health insurers) were particularly impacted – provides an illustrative case. Through semi-structured interviews, additional document analysis and insights from institutional change theory, we show how banks intensified relationship management, increased demands on loan applications and shifted financial risks onto health care organizations, while health insurers tightened up their monitoring and accountability practices towards health care organizations. In return, health care organizations were urged to rearrange their operations and become more risk-minded. They became increasingly dependent on banks and health insurers for their existence. Moreover, with this study, we show how institutional arenas come about through both the long-term efforts of institutional agents and unpredictable implications of economic and societal crises. Abstract

The Terahertz Intensity Mapper (TIM) is a NASA far-infrared balloon mission designed to perform [CII] intensity mapping of the peak of cosmic star formation. To achieve this goal, TIM will fly two grating spectrometers that together cover the 240–420 μ m wavelength range at a spectral resolution, R ∼ 250 . Each spectrometer will require a large format ( ∼ 3600 detectors) array of dual-polarization sensitive detectors, which are photon noise limited at the 100 fW of loading expected during operation. We present the design of a fully-aluminum low-volume lumped-element kinetic inductance detector that incorporates a novel "chain-link" absorber design. Operating at 215 mK, we demonstrate this detector achieves a photon noise limited performance at 100 fW of optical loading with a white noise spectrum down to 1 Hz. Based upon noise measurements of a dark detector, which shows a quasi-particle lifetime of 300 μ s , these KIDs are expected to achieve a detector-limited noise equivalent power of ∼ 1.3 × 10 - 18 W / Hz . Abstract

This work focuses on the gas chemical composition of CGCG007-025. This compact dwarf is undergoing a galaxy wide star-forming burst, whose spatial behaviour has been observed by VLT/MUSE. We present a new line measurement library to treat almost 7800 voxels. The direct method chemical analysis is limited to 484 voxels with good detection of the |$[\mathrm{S}\, {\small III}]6312\, \mathring{\rm A}$| temperature diagnostic line. The recombination fluxes are corrected for stellar absorption via a population synthesis. Additionally, we discuss a new algorithm to fit photoionization models via neural networks. The eight ionic abundances analysed show a spatial normal distribution with a |$\sigma \sim 0.1\, {\rm dex}$|⁠ , where only half this value can be explained by the uncertainty in the measurements. The oxygen abundance distribution is 12 + log(O/H) = 7.88 ± 0.11. The |${\it T}_{e}[\mathrm{S}\, {\small III}]$| and ne[S  ii ] are also normally distributed. However, in the central and brightest region, the ne[S  ii ] is almost thrice the mean galaxy value. This is also reflected in the extinction measurements. The ionization parameter has a distribution of |${\rm log}(U) = -2.52^{0.17}_{0.19}$|⁠. The parameter spatial behaviour agrees with the S2+/S+ map. Finally, the discrepancies between the direct method and the photoionization model fitting are discussed. In the latter technique, we find that mixing lines with uneven uncertainty magnitudes can impact the accuracy of the results. In these fittings, we recommend overestimating the minimum flux uncertainty one order below the maximum line flux uncertainty. This provides a better match with the direct method. Abstract

Background: It is hypothesised that community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients with more severe disease or inflammation might benefit more from adjunctive corticosteroid treatment. Neutrophil count, lymphocyte count and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) have been associated with inflammation and disease severity in CAP. We investigated the interaction between these parameters and adjunctive dexamethasone effects on clinical outcomes in CAP. Methods: We conducted a post hoc analysis of the randomised placebo-controlled Santeon-CAP trial (n = 401), which showed a positive effect of adjunctive oral dexamethasone on length of stay (LOS) in CAP patients. White blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil count, NLR (highest tertile vs. lowest two tertiles) and lymphocyte count (lowest tertile vs. highest two tertiles) were examined as potential effect modifiers of treatment with dexamethasone on LOS (primary outcome) and ICU-admission, 30-day mortality and hospital readmission. Results: WBC differential counts were available for 354 patients. The effect of dexamethasone on LOS was more pronounced in high WBC count, high neutrophil count or high NLR subgroups (difference in median LOS of 2 days versus zero days in the reference subgroups, p for interaction < 0.05). There was no effect modification for the other outcomes. Patients with low WBC and low neutrophil counts did not benefit from dexamethasone, while hospital readmission rate was higher in those treated with dexamethasone (6% vs. 11%). Conclusions: WBC count and/or neutrophil might be easily available biomarkers to guide selection of CAP patients who are more likely to benefit from adjunctive dexamethasone treatment. Future prospective trials are needed to confirm this predictive potential.

Contains fulltext : 251573.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) OBJECTIVE: The Dutch Surgical Aneurysm Audit (DSAA) initiative was established in 2013 to monitor and improve nationwide outcomes of aortic aneurysm surgery. The objective of this study was to examine whether outcomes of surgery for intact abdominal aortic aneurysms (iAAA) have improved over time. METHODS: Patients who underwent primary repair of an iAAA by standard endovascular (EVAR) or open surgical repair (OSR) between 2014 and 2019 were selected from the DSAA for inclusion. The primary outcome was peri-operative mortality trend per year, stratified by OSR and EVAR. Secondary outcomes were trends per year in major complications, textbook outcome (TbO), and characteristics of treated patients. The trends per year were evaluated and reported in odds ratios per year. RESULTS: In this study, 11 624 patients (74.8%) underwent EVAR and 3 908 patients (25.2%) underwent OSR. For EVAR, after adjustment for confounding factors, there was no improvement in peri-operative mortality (aOR [adjusted odds ratio] 1.06, 95% CI 0.94 - 1.20), while major complications decreased (2014: 10.1%, 2019: 7.0%; aOR 0.91, 95% CI 0.88 - 0.95) and the TbO rate increased (2014: 68.1%, 2019: 80.9%; aOR 1.13, 95% CI 1.10 - 1.16). For OSR, the peri-operative mortality decreased (2014: 6.1%, 2019: 4.6%; aOR 0.89, 95% CI 0.82 - 0.98), as well as major complications (2014: 28.6%, 2019: 23.3%; aOR 0.95, 95% CI 0.91 - 0.99). Furthermore, the proportion of TbO increased (2014: 49.1%, 2019: 58.3%; aOR 1.05, 95% CI 1.01 - 1.10). In both the EVAR and OSR group, the proportion of patients with cardiac comorbidity increased. CONCLUSION: Since the establishment of this nationwide quality improvement initiative (DSAA), all outcomes of iAAA repair following EVAR and OSR have improved, except for peri-operative mortality following EVAR which remained unchanged.

8th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion; 1645-1648, The AgroFossilFree project promotes fossil-energy-free technologies and strategies (FEFTS) in the agricultural sector by integrating various stakeholder initiatives and disseminating knowledge on FEFTS in agriculture. Applications boosting RES integration in important agricultural sectors, notably solar technology, are given considerable attention. The project's main goal is to create a platform where farmers, advisors, academics, business partners, and other stakeholders may discover pertinent information about FEFTS in agriculture. The AgroFossilFree initiative works to reduce the use of fossil fuels in all aspects of farming, which supports the EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategies. By encouraging the productive sharing of novel technologies, it helps to bridge the gap between the available FEFTS and common agricultural practices throughout the EU. By facilitating the effective flow of innovative information and ideas amongst stakeholders, it contributes to close the gap between the available FEFTS and common EU agricultural practices, thus European agriculture could become more environmentally, socioeconomically, and energetically sustainable. The European agricultural sector can support and abide by policies to reduce the use of fossil energy, the relevant legal and regulatory frameworks, and sustainable food production practices with the help of the knowledge that is gathered, classified, and presented to actors in the agricultural field. This article provides an update on the European Commission founded AgroFossilFree project.

The EU H2020 project REPLACE (Contract No. 847087) aims to boost the phase-out of inefficient and old heating and cooling systems by targeting consumers, investors/owners as well as intermediaries (installers, plumbers, and chimney sweepers) and helps them to make independently informed decisions. All activities proposed by REPLACE aim to inform and motivate consumers to replace their old and inefficient HC appliances with better, greener alternatives with the benefit of monetary savings and improvements in air-quality, comfort, safety, and security of supply. Abstract

In spite of the advent of extremely large telescopes in the UV/optical/NIR range, the current generation of 8-10m facilities is likely to remain competitive at ground-UV wavelengths for the foreseeable future. The Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) has been designed to provide high-efficiency (>40%) observations in the near UV (305-400 nm requirement, 300-420 nm goal) at a spectral resolving power of R>20,000, although a lower-resolution, sky-limited mode of R ~ 7,000 is also planned. CUBES will offer new possibilities in many fields of astrophysics, providing access to key lines of stellar spectra: a tremendous diversity of iron-peak and heavy elements, lighter elements (in particular Beryllium) and light-element molecules (CO, CN, OH), as well as Balmer lines and the Balmer jump (particularly important for young stellar objects). The UV range is also critical in extragalactic studies: the circumgalactic medium of distant galaxies, the contribution of different types of sources to the cosmic UV background, the measurement of H2 and primordial Deuterium in a regime of relatively transparent intergalactic medium, and follow-up of explosive transients. The CUBES project completed a Phase A conceptual design in June 2021 and has now entered the Phase B dedicated to detailed design and construction. First science operations are planned for 2028. Abstract

The AgroFossilFree project supports Fossil-Energy-Free Technologies and Strategies (FEFTS) in agriculture by coordinating several stakeholder actions and providing information on FEFTS in agriculture. Thereby, special emphasis is placed on applications promoting RES integration in major agricultural sectors, particularly biomass. The core objective of the project is to set-up an online platform where farmers, advisors, researchers, industrial partners and other actors can find useful information on FEFTS in agriculture. The AgroFossilFree project contributes to the High Level EU Strategies (i.e. EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategy) by aiming to decrease the use of fossil energy in any farming process. It also contributes to closing the gap between the available FEFTS and the everyday EU agricultural practices by promoting the effective exchange of novel ideas and exchanging information between stakeholders. If this gap closes, European agriculture could become more sustainable with minimum energy, environmental and socioeconomic impacts. With the knowledge that is collected, classified, and presented to actors in the agricultural field, the European agricultural sector can promote and comply with fossil energy use reduction policies, the related legal and regulatory frameworks and sustainable food production practices. Abstract

The DiBiCoo project (dibicoo.org) supports the European biogas/biomethane industry and the biogas development in developing and emerging countries by preparing markets for the export of sustainable biogas/biomethane technologies from Europe to developing and emerging countries. This is achieved by the development and application of innovative digital and non-digital support and matchmaking tools and actions, by knowledge transfer and capacity building as well as by the preparation of demo cases up to the prefeasibility stage. This will increase the share of renewable energies, both in Europe and in importing countries. This paper addresses biogas-relevant framework conditions in the importing and exporting countries, the status of research and development needs of biogas technologies in the importing countries as well as export opportunities for European countries., Proceedings of the 30th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 9-12 May 2022, Online, pp. 19-23
