This study’s goals are divided into two categories. The first is to design and build an excavator equipped with parallel electrical linear actuators. The second is to generate and test a PSO-based and a PFM-based path for this excavator in order to save energy by reducing energy consumption, improve the digging accuracy by minimizing the deviation between the desired and dug surfaces of the ground, and prevent colliding with subsurface objects. For this purpose, computer vision was employed to improve monitoring and verification. Five types of experiments were carried out in this investigation. The first two and the other three examined the impact of energy conservation in PSO- and PFM-based path generation, respectively. Finally, the results from these experiments were compared to identify and show the effect of optimal path generation.

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors can create high-quality scans of an environment. However, LiDAR point clouds are affected by harsh weather conditions since airborne particles are easily detected. In literature, conventional filtering and artificial intelligence (AI) filtering methods have been used to detect, and remove, airborne particles. In this paper, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model was used to classify airborne dust particles through a voxel-based approach. The CNN model was compared to several conventional filtering methods, where the results show that the CNN filter can achieve up to 5.39% F1 score improvement when compared to the best conventional filter. All the filtering methods were tested in dynamic environments where the sensor was attached to a mobile platform, the environment had several moving obstacles, and there were multiple dust cloud sources.

As unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) continue to be adapted to new applications, an emerging area lacks proper guidance for global route optimization methodology. This area is surveillance. In autonomous surveillance applications, a UGV is equipped with a sensor that receives data within a specific range from the vehicle while it traverses the environment. In this paper, the ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm was adapted to the UGV surveillance problem to solve for optimal paths within sub-areas. To do so, the problem was modeled as the covering salesman problem (CSP). This is one of the first applications using ACO to solve the CSP. Then, a genetic algorithm (GA) was used to schedule a fleet of UGVs to scan several sub-areas such that the total distance is minimized. Initially, these paths are infeasible because of the sharp turning angles. Thus, they are improved using two methods of path refinement (namely, the corner-cutting and Reeds–Shepp methods) such that the kinematic constraints of the vehicles are met. Several test case scenarios were developed for Goheung, South Korea, to validate the proposed methodology. The promising results presented in this article highlight the effectiveness of the proposed methodology for UGV surveillance applications.

The division of a city into several waste collection areas can have a large influence on the workload distribution put in place for the waste collection personnel. Additionally, areas with rapid urban development can benefit from a systematic way to automate the collection area division given that there is geographical information containing stop locations with an approximate number of dwelling units. This paper proposes a 2-stage collection area optimization process using the weighted K-means algorithm paired with differential evolution to minimize the standard deviation of dwelling units across each collection area. Results from a case study in The City of Oshawa, Canada prove that the proposed clustering techniques can yield a set of collection areas with 87.75% improvement compared to the current arrangement in terms of balancing the dwelling units. Additionally, the same clustering techniques can be used to assign collection routes for the vehicles in each area. A combination of Dijkstra’s and Hierholzer’s algorithms is applied to generate a route simulation with accompanying statistics regarding the total distance travelled, collection time, travel time, and fuel consumed. Specific to the case study in The City of Oshawa, each day of the week has 2 collection areas, and a genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal collection area pairs. Results from the collection area pairing show that there is a 38.04% and 37.54% improvement of simulated statistics for Week 1 and 2 collections, respectively.

In recent years, autonomous mobile platforms have seen an increase in usage in several applications. One of which is street-sweeping. Although street-sweeping is a necessary process due to health and cleanliness, fleet operations are difficult to plan optimally. Since each vehicle has several constraints (battery, debris, and water), path planning becomes increasingly difficult to perform manually. Additionally, in real-world applications vehicles may become inactive due to a breakdown, which requires real-time scheduling technology to update the paths for the remaining vehicles. In this paper, the fleet street-sweeping problem can be solved using the proposed lower-level and higher-level path generation methods. For the lower level, a Smart Selective Navigator algorithm is proposed, and a modified genetic algorithm is used for the higher-level path planning. A case study was presented for Uchi Park, South Korea, where the proposed methodology was validated. Specifically, results generated from the ideal scenario (all vehicles operating) were compared to the breakdown scenario, where little to no difference in the overall statistics was observed. Additionally, the lower-level path generation could yield solutions with over 94% area coverage.

This study presents a drone-based excavation platform prototype with the key objectives of balancing stability during excavation, sensing, and digging the soil pile autonomously without human intervention. The whole platform was first designed in CAD software, and then each part of the excavator assembly was 3D printed by using PLA filament. The physical system was then combined with numerous electronic components and linked to various software applications for a drone to perform autonomous excavations. Pixhawk Orange Cube served as the main controller for the drone, while Nvidia Jetson Nano was used for processing data and controlling the tip of the bucket at a specified location for the autonomous excavator. Two scenarios were considered to validate the functionality of the developed platform. In the first scenario, the drone flies independently to a construction site, lands, senses the soil, excavates it, and then travels to another location specified by the mission to deposit the soil.

This paper presents an adaptive and weighted model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for autonomous driving with disturbance estimation and prediction. Unexpected and unpredictable disturbances in the real world limit the performance of MPC. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes adaptive and weighted prediction methods with a sliding mode observer and a weighting function with the grey prediction model. The sliding mode observer is designed for disturbance estimation with finite stability conditions, and the estimated disturbance is predicted using the grey prediction model. Based on the adaptive and weighted prediction method, the length of prediction horizon and cost value of each predicted state are adjusted in real time to eliminate any negative impact on future predicted states. Meanwhile, a variation in the cost value, which is caused by prediction horizon adaptation and weighted prediction, may harm the control performance as it can excessively increase or decrease the model uncertainty. Therefore, an input weighting factor is adapted in the MPC cost function based on an exponential weighting function. The performance of the proposed adaptive control algorithm is evaluated using CarMaker software under longitudinal and lateral autonomous driving scenarios.

In this study, a semi-active suspension based on a hydro-pneumatic mechanism was designed to minimize the ride vibration using a suspension control algorithm. The performance of the algorithm was critical for controlling the characteristics of the target tractor. A linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) optimal control algorithm was designed as a semi-active suspension control algorithm. The plant model for developing this algorithm was based on the parameters of an actual tractor. The rear suspension deflection was represented by a Kalman-filter-based state observer feedback to estimate the state variables that were difficult to measure. The designed state observer of the LQG controller was validated in terms of an accuracy index. The estimated vertical velocity and acceleration accuracies of the cabin were 83% and 79%, respectively. The performance of the designed controller was validated in terms of a performance index by comparing the performance of a tractor equipped with a rear rubber mount with that of one equipped with a semi-active suspension. The peak and root-mean-square values of the vertical acceleration of the cabin were reduced by up to 48.97% and 47.06%, respectively. This study could serve as a basis for the application of the control algorithm to systems with similar characteristics, thereby reducing system costs.

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) holds promise as a way to intensify current agricultural production systems while limiting pressures on land, water, and energy resources. However, its use has not yet been widely adopted, in part because the engineering design considerations and associated challenges are not well known. This is even more apparent for aeroponics, where the additional cost and complexities in controlling atomization have yet to establish an advantage in scale over simpler hydroponic systems To shed light on these considerations and challenges, an instrumented aeroponic system was prototyped with the goal of creating a quantitative model of growth for various species of leafy greens. As the first consideration, pressure swirl atomizers were paired with a diaphragm-type pressure tank to supply the necessary pressures needed for effective atomization. Secondly, nutrient solution was mixed on-demand from Reverse Osmosis (RO) water and concentrated nutrient stock then pumped into the pressure tank using a positive displacement pump. A bamboo-based substrate that allowed both germination and extended vegetative growth was supported on a stainless steel mesh and PVC frame acting as a grow tray. Finally, a camera microservice platform was developed to quantify plant growth using a computer vision pixel-based segmentation method.

As autonomous tractors become more common crop harvesting applications, the need to optimize the global servicing path becomes crucial for maximizing efficiency and crop yield. In recent years, several methods of path generation have been researched, but very few have studied their applications on complex field shapes. In this study, a method of creating the optimal servicing path for simple and complex field shapes is proposed. The proposed algorithm creates subfields for a target land, optimizes the track direction for several subfields individually, merges subfields that result in overall increased efficiency, and finds the minimum non-operating paths to travel from subfield to subfield while selecting the respective optimal subfield starting locations. Additionally, it is required that this process must be done within 3 seconds to meet performance requirements. Results from 3 separate field shapes show that the field traversal efficiency can range from 68.0% to 94.4%, and the coverage ratio can range from 98.8% to 99.9% for several different conditions. In comparison with previous studies using the same field shape, the proposed methods demonstrate an increase of 5.5% in field traversal efficiency.

This paper presents a sliding mode control (SMC)-based path-tracking algorithm for autonomous vehicles by considering model-free adaptive feedback actions. In autonomous vehicles, safe path tracking requires adaptive and robust control algorithms because driving environment and vehicle conditions vary in real time. In this study, the SMC was adopted as a robust control method to adjust the switching gain, taking into account the sliding surface and unknown uncertainty to make the control error zero. The sliding surface can be designed mathematically, but it is difficult to express the unknown uncertainty mathematically. Information of priori bounded uncertainties is needed to obtain closed-loop stability of the control system, and the unknown uncertainty can vary with changes in internal and external factors. In the literature, ongoing efforts have been made to overcome the limitation of losing control stability due to unknown uncertainty. This study proposes an integrated method of adaptive feedback control (AFC) and SMC that can adjust a bounded uncertainty. Some illustrative and representative examples, such as autonomous driving scenarios, are also provided to show the main properties of the designed integrated controller. The examples show superior control performance, and it is expected that the integrated controller could be widely used for the path-tracking algorithms of autonomous vehicles.

Although the LiDAR sensor provides high-resolution point cloud data, its performance degrades when exposed to dust environments, which may cause a failure in perception for robotics applications. To address this issue, our study designed an intensity-based filter that can remove dust particles from LiDAR data in two steps. In the first step, it identifies potential points that are likely to be dust by using intensity information. The second step involves analyzing the point density around selected points and removing them if they do not meet the threshold criterion. To test the proposed filter, we collected experimental data sets under the existence of dust and manually labeled them. Using these data, the de-dusting performance of the designed filter was evaluated and compared to several types of conventional filters. The proposed filter outperforms the conventional ones in achieving the best performance with the highest F1 score and removing dust without sacrificing the original surrounding data.

This article presents the sensing and safety algorithms for autonomous excavators operating on construction sites. Safety is a key concern for autonomous construction to reduce collisions and machinery damage. Taking this point into consideration, our study deals with LiDAR data processing that allows for object detection, motion tracking/prediction, and track management, as well as safety evaluation in terms of potential collision risk. In the safety algorithm developed in this study, potential collision risks can be evaluated based on information from excavator working areas, predicted states of detected objects, and calculated safety indices. Experiments were performed using a modified mini hydraulic excavator with Velodyne VLP-16 LiDAR. Experimental validations prove that the developed algorithms are capable of tracking objects, predicting their future states, and assessing the degree of collision risks with respect to distance and time. Hence, the proposed algorithms can be applied to diverse autonomous machines for safety enhancement.

Excavation is one of the primary projects in the construction industry. Introducing various technologies for full automation of the excavation can be a solution to improve sensing and productivity that are the ongoing issues in this area. This paper covers three aspects of effective excavation progress monitoring that include excavation volume estimation, occlusion area detection, and 5D mapping. The excavation volume estimation component enables estimating the bucket volume and ground excavation volume. To achieve mapping of the hidden or occluded ground areas, integration of proprioceptive and exteroceptive sensing data was adopted. Finally, we proposed the idea of 5D mapping that provides the info of the excavated ground in terms of geometric space and material type/properties using a 3D ground map with LiDAR intensity and a ground resistive index. Through experimental validations with a mini excavator, the accuracy of the two different volume estimation methods was compared. Finally, a reconstructed map for occlusion areas and a 5D map were created using the bucket tip’s trajectory and multiple sensory data with convolutional neural network techniques, respectively. The created 5D map would allow for the provision of extended ground information beyond a normal 3D ground map, which is indispensable to progress monitoring and control of autonomous excavation.

This study aims to establish a test method to obtain the dynamic characteristics of hydraulic-pneumatic semi-active suspensions used in tractor cabins. Because dynamic characteristics are utilized in simulation models for developing suspension control logic and must be secured to improve control performance, an accurate test method must be established. The dynamic characteristics of the suspension, i.e., the spring constant and damping coefficient, were obtained by changing the current and velocity conditions. An exciter was used as a test device to control the displacement and velocity of the hydraulic cylinder. In order to derive the spring constant of the suspension, a low-speed reciprocating motion test was performed to obtain the force-displacement diagram and to derive the damping coefficient; 48 tests were performed under 6 velocity conditions and 8 current conditions to obtain a force-velocity diagram for each result. The spring constant of the suspension was confirmed using the slope of the trend line in the force-displacement diagram obtained through the low-speed reciprocating motion test of the suspension. In addition, the damping coefficient was calculated using the force-velocity diagram obtained through the reciprocating motion test of the suspension under various current and velocity conditions.

This study proposes an effective thermal control for plastic injection molding (polymer: Santoprene 8211-45 with density of790kg/m3, injection pressure: 1400psi (9,652,660 Pa)) in a laminated die. For this purpose, a comprehensive control strategy is provided to cover various themes. First, a new method for determining the optimal sensor locations as a prerequisite step for modeling and controller design is introduced. Second, system identification through offline and online training with finite element analysis and neural network techniques are used to develop an accurate model by incorporating uncertain dynamics of the laminated die. Third, an additive feedforward control by adding direct adaptive inverse control to self-adaptive PID is developed for temperature control of cavity wall (cavity size: 52.9 x 32.07 x 16.03 mm). A verification of designed controller's performance demonstrates that the proposed strategy provides accurate online temperature tracking and faster response under thermal dynamics with various cycle-times in the injection mold process.
