Patients receiving radiotherapy to the hand are sometimes treated standing, with their heads beside and potentially facing an electron applicator. This raises the possibility of consequential lens dose from scattered electrons, which this study investigates. This study measures the dose beside an applicator at a depth of 3 mm in a phantom as an estimate of lens dose for such patients. The lens dose is investigated as a function of height, distance, beam energy, applicator size, and cutout fill on a Varian Trilogy linear accelerator. The effect of the potential mitigation strategies of turning the head or shielding with lead sheets is also investigated. Measurement found that a typical hand setup may result in the lens receiving 0.15% of the treatment dose, which would deliver a cumulative dose above the demonstrated threshold dose for cataract risk for some courses. Large applicators and close facial proximity to the applicator separately enhance dose by factors of 3 and 5 respectively, raising the possibility of multiple gray to the lens for patients in unfavorable setups. Simple and effective mitigation strategies are available: Turning the patient's head to the side or placing 1-2 mm of lead on glasses reduced lens dose by a factor of 3-4, and covering the side of the applicator with 1 mm of lead or turning the head completely away effectively eliminated lens dose. For the proper organization of the six-layered mammalian neocortex it is required that neurons migrate radially from their place of birth towards their designated destination. The molecular machinery underlying this neuronal migration is still poorly understood. The dynein-adaptor protein BICD2 is associated with a spectrum of human neurological diseases, including malformations of cortical development. Previous studies have shown that knockdown of BICD2 interferes with interkinetic nuclear migration in radial glial progenitor cells, and that Bicd2-deficient mice display an altered laminar organization of the cerebellum and the neocortex. However, the precise in vivo role of BICD2 in neocortical development remains unclear. By comparing cell-type specific conditional Bicd2 knock-out mice, we found that radial migration in the cortex predominantly depends on BICD2 function in post-mitotic neurons. Neuron-specific Bicd2 cKO mice showed severely impaired radial migration of late-born upper-layer neurons. BICD2 depletion in cortical neurons interfered with proper Golgi organization, and neuronal maturation and survival of cortical plate neurons. Single-neuron labeling revealed a specific role of BICD2 in bipolar locomotion. Rescue experiments with wildtype and disease-related mutant BICD2 constructs revealed that a point-mutation in the RAB6/RANBP2-binding-domain, associated with cortical malformation in patients, fails to restore proper cortical neuron migration. Together, these findings demonstrate a novel, cell-intrinsic role of BICD2 in cortical neuron migration in vivo and provide new insights into BICD2-dependent dynein-mediated functions during cortical development.

This study aimed to gain insight into the microbial quality, safety and bacterial community composition of black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) reared at different facilities on a variety of organic waste streams. For seven rearing cycles, both on laboratory-scale and in large-scale facilities at several locations, the microbiota of the larvae was studied. Also samples of the substrate used and the residue (= leftover substrate after rearing, existing of non-consumed substrate, exuviae and faeces) were investigated. Depending on the sample, it was subjected to plate counting, Illumina Miseq sequencing and/or detection of specific food pathogens. The results revealed that the substrates applied at the various locations differed substantially in microbial numbers as well as in the bacterial community composition. Furthermore, little similarity was observed between the microbiota of the substrate and that of the larvae reared on that substrate. Despite substantial differences between the microbiota of larvae reared at several locations, 48 species-level operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were shared by all larvae, among which most belonged to the phyla Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. Although the substrate is assumed to be an important source of bacteria, our results suggest that a variety of supposedly interacting factors-both abiotic and biotic-are likely to affect the microbiota in the larvae. In some larvae and/or residue samples, potential foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella and Bacillus cereus were detected, emphasising that decontamination technologies are required when the larvae are used in feed, just as for other feed ingredients, or eventually in food.

Purpose: We propose a novel compensator-based IMRT system designed to provide a simple, reliable, and cost-effective adjunct technology, with the goal of expanding global access to advanced radiotherapy techniques. The system would employ easily reusable tungsten bead compensators that operate independent of a gantry (e.g., mounted in a ring around the patient). Thereby the system can be retrofitted to existing linac and cobalt teletherapy units. This study explores the quality of treatment plans from the proposed system and the dependence on associated design parameters., Methods: We considered 60 Co-based plans as the most challenging scenario for dosimetry and benchmarked them against clinical MLC-based plans delivered on a linac. Treatment planning was performed in the Pinnacle treatment planning system with commissioning based on Monte Carlo simulations of compensated beams. 60 Co-compensator IMRT plans were generated for five patients with head-and-neck cancer and five with gynecological cancer and compared to respective IMRT plans using a 6 MV linac beam with an MLC. The dependence of dosimetric endpoints on compensator resolution, thickness, position, and number of beams was assessed. Dosimetric accuracy was validated by Monte Carlo simulations of dose distribution in a water phantom from beams with the IMRT plan compensators., Results: The 60 Co-compensator plans had on average equivalent PTV coverage and somewhat inferior OAR sparing compared to the 6 MV-MLC plans, but the differences in dosimetric endpoints were clinically acceptable. Calculated treatment times for head-and-neck plans were 7.6 ± 2.0 min vs 3.9 ± 0.8 min (6 MV-MLC vs 60 Co-compensator) and for gynecological plans were 8.7 ± 3.1 min vs 4.3 ± 0.4 min. Plan quality was insensitive to most design parameters over much of the ranges studied, with no degradation found when the compensator resolution was finer than 6 mm, maximum thickness at least 2 tenth-value-layers, and more than five beams were used. Source-to-compensator distances of 53 and 63 cm resulted in very similar plan quality. Monte Carlo simulations suggest no increase in surface dose for the geometries considered here. Simulated dosimetric validation tests had median gamma pass rates of 97.6% for criteria of 3% (global)/3 mm with a 10% threshold., Conclusions: The novel ring-compensator IMRT system can produce plans of comparable quality to standard 6 MV-MLC systems. Even when 60 Co beams are used the plan quality is acceptable and treatment times are substantially reduced. 60 Co-compensator IMRT plans are adequately modeled in an existing commercial treatment planning system. This study aimed to investigate the potential accumulation of mycotoxins in the lesser mealworm ( Alphitobius diaperinus, LMW) and black soldier fly ( Hermetia illucens, BSF) larvae. Feed was spiked with aflatoxin B₁, deoxynivalenol (DON), ochratoxin A or zearalenone, and as a mixture of mycotoxins, to concentrations of 1, 10, and 25 times the maximum limits set by the European Commission for complete feed. This maximum limit is 0.02 mg/kg for aflatoxin B₁, 5 mg/kg for DON, 0.5 mg/kg for zearalenone and 0.1 mg/kg for ochratoxin A. The mycotoxins and some of their metabolites were analysed in the larvae and residual material using a validated and accredited LC-MS/MS-based method. Metabolites considered were aflatoxicol, aflatoxin P₁, aflatoxin Q₁, and aflatoxin M₁, 3-acetyl-DON, 15-acetyl-DON and DON-3-glycoside, and α- and β-zearalenol. No differences were observed between larvae reared on mycotoxins individually or as a mixture with regards to both larvae development and mycotoxin accumulation/excretion. None of the mycotoxins accumulated in the larvae and were only detected in BSF larvae several orders of magnitude lower than the concentration in feed. Mass balance calculations showed that BSF and LMW larvae metabolized the four mycotoxins to different extents. Metabolites accounted for minimal amounts of the mass balance, except for zearalenone metabolites in the BSF treatments, which accounted for an average maximum of 86% of the overall mass balance. Both insect species showed to excrete or metabolize the four mycotoxins present in their feed. Hence, safe limits for these mycotoxins in substrates to be used for these two insect species possibly could be higher than for production animals. However, additional analytical and toxicological research to fully understand the safe limits of mycotoxins in insect feed, and thus the safety of the insects, is required., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

In the standard model, the weak interaction is formulated with a purely vector-axial-vector (V-A) structure. Without restriction on the chirality of the neutrino, the most general limits on tensor currents from nuclear β decay are dominated by a single measurement of the β-ν[over ¯] correlation in ^{6}He β decay dating back over a half century. In the present work, the β-ν[over ¯]-α correlation in the β decay of ^{8}Li and subsequent α-particle breakup of the ^{8}Be^{*} daughter was measured. The results are consistent with a purely V-A interaction and in the case of couplings to right-handed neutrinos (C&#95;{T}=-C&#95;{T}^{'}) limits the tensor fraction to |C&#95;{T}/C&#95;{A}|^{2}<0.011 (95.5% C.L.). The measurement confirms the ^{6}He result using a different nuclear system and employing modern ion-trapping techniques subject to different systematic uncertainties.

The Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer has made mass measurements of 33 neutron-rich nuclides provided by the new Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The studied region includes the 132Sn double shell closure and ranges in Z from In to Cs, with Sn isotopes measured out to A=135, and the typical measurement precision is at the 100 ppb level or better. The region encompasses a possible major waiting point of the astrophysical r process, and the impact of the masses on the r process is shown through a series of simulations. These first-ever simulations with direct mass information on this waiting point show significant increases in waiting time at Sn and Sb in comparison with commonly used mass models, demonstrating the inadequacy of existing models for accurate r-process calculations.

A measurement of the α-β-ν[over ¯] angular correlation in the Gamow-Teller decay (8)Li→(8)Be(*)+ν[over ¯]+β, (8)Be(*)→α+α has been performed using ions confined in a linear Paul trap surrounded by silicon detectors. The energy difference spectrum of the α particles emitted along and opposite the direction of the β particle is consistent with the standard model prediction and places a limit of 3.1% (95.5% confidence level) on any tensor contribution to the decay. From this result, the amplitude of any tensor component C(T) relative to that of the dominant axial-vector component C(A) of the electroweak interaction is limited to |C(T)/C(A)|<0.18 (95.5% confidence level). This experimental approach is facilitated by several favorable features of the (8)Li β decay and has different systematic effects than the previous β-ν[over ¯] correlation results for a pure Gamow-Teller transition obtained from studying (6)He β decay.

A novel technique for β-delayed neutron spectroscopy has been demonstrated using trapped ions. The neutron-energy spectrum is reconstructed by measuring the time of flight of the nuclear recoil following neutron emission, thereby avoiding all the challenges associated with neutron detection, such as backgrounds from scattered neutrons and γ rays and complicated detector-response functions. (137)I(+) ions delivered from a (252)Cf source were confined in a linear Paul trap surrounded by radiation detectors, and the β-delayed neutron-energy spectrum and branching ratio were determined by detecting the β(-) and recoil ions in coincidence. Systematic effects were explored by determining the branching ratio three ways. Improvements to achieve higher detection efficiency, better energy resolution, and a lower neutron-energy threshold are proposed.
