We report on a transportable and easy-to-operate optical clock utilizing the 2S1/2 - 2D3/2 transition of a single trapped 171Yb+ ion at 436 nm. Developed within a pilot project for quantum technology in Germany lead by industry, the clock is set up in two 19″ racks. In this way, transportation can easily be realized, and the large degree of automatization allows for operation outside highly specialized laboratories for applications beyond basic research. Comparisons to existing high-accuracy optical clock systems enable a verification of the clock's stability and uncertainty budget at the low 10−17 level. During these tests, operation with 99.8% availability over more than 14 days has been achieved.

A key challenge toward future quantum internet technology is connecting quantum processors at metropolitan scale. Here, we report on heralded entanglement between two independently operated quantum network nodes separated by 10 kilometers. The two nodes hosting diamond spin qubits are linked with a midpoint station via 25 kilometers of deployed optical fiber. We minimize the effects of fiber photon loss by quantum frequency conversion of the qubit-native photons to the telecom L-band and by embedding the link in an extensible phase-stabilized architecture enabling the use of the loss-resilient single-click entangling protocol. By capitalizing on the full heralding capabilities of the network link in combination with real-time feedback logic on the long-lived qubits, we demonstrate the delivery of a predefined entangled state on the nodes irrespective of the heralding detection pattern. Addressing key scaling challenges and being compatible with different qubit systems, our architecture establishes a generic platform for exploring metropolitan-scale quantum networks.

We report on the experimental realization of an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) indium sealing between a conflat knife edge and an optical window. The sealing requires a very low clamping force and thus allows for the use of very thin and fragile windows.

We have measured the relative strength epsilon dd of the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction compared with the contact interaction in a dipolar chromium Bose-Einstein condensate. We analyze the asymptotic velocities of expansion of the condensate with different orientations of the atomic magnetic moments. By comparing the experimental results with numerical solutions of the hydrodynamic equations for dipolar condensates, we obtain epsilon dd = 0.159+/-0.034. We use this result to determine the s-wave scattering length a = (5.08+/-1.06 x 10(-9)) m = (96+/-20) a0 of 52Cr. This is fully consistent with our previous measurements on the basis of Feshbach resonances and therefore confirms the validity of the theoretical approach used to describe the dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate.

The pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and excretion of ciclesonide, a novel and effective inhaled glucocorticoid for the treatment of asthma, were investigated after intravenous and oral administration of 14C-ciclesonide in the mouse, rat, rabbit, and dog. The pharmacokinetics of ciclesonide in all animal species were characterized by a low oral bioavailability (approximately 6% or less), a high clearance, and a large volume of distribution. The apparent terminal half-life of ciclesonide was short; the apparent terminal half-life of the active desisobutyryl-ciclesonide metabolite (des-CIC or M1) was longer and ranged from 2.4 to 6.9 hours in the 4 species. Metabolites derived from ciclesonide in serum (or plasma) and excreta samples from the 4 animal species were profiled and identified by LC/RAM/MS (liquid chromatography/radioactivity monitor/mass spectrometry). Ciclesonide was extensively metabolized to yield des-CIC, which was further metabolized to primarily yield hippuric acid and hydroxylated metabolites, namely, isomers of cyclohexane-monohydroxylated des-CIC and B-ring-monohydroxylated des-CIC. Greater than 90% of intravenous and oral 14C-ciclesonide doses were recovered in all species; the main elimination route was fecal/biliary. A comparison of in vitro and in vivo metabolite profiles between mice, rats, rabbits, and dogs with those from humans indicated that metabolic pathways for ciclesonide were qualitatively similar in humans and in the 4 animal species.

We have investigated the expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate of strongly magnetic chromium atoms. The long-range and anisotropic magnetic dipole-dipole interaction leads to an anisotropic deformation of the expanding chromium condensate which depends on the orientation of the atomic dipole moments. Our measurements are consistent with the theory of dipolar quantum gases and show that a chromium condensate is an excellent model system to study dipolar interactions in such gases.

The distribution, metabolism, and elimination of intravenous [14C]clofarabine was studied in Fischer 344 male rats under a once daily for 5 days dosing schedule of 25 or 50 mg/kg/day. Also, the in vitro metabolism in rat, dog, and human hepatocytes was studied. Plasma radioactivity (of which clofarabine accounted for 63% to 93%) exhibited three phases of exponential elimination, with half-lives of 0.3, 1.3, and 12.8 h after administration of the 25 mg/kg/day regimen. Unscheduled deaths occurred after one to three doses with the 50 mg/kg regimen, possibly due to nonlinear pharmacokinetics; therefore, mass balance and radiokinetic profiles could not be obtained. A total of 77.1% (of which 87.2% was clofarabine) and 10.8% (of which 6.9% was clofarabine) of the dose was recovered in urine and feces, respectively. 6-ketoclofarabine, believed to be formed via adenosine deaminase, was the metabolite of greatest concentration found in urine and feces, but in each matrix, it accounted for only 7% of the daily recovery of radioactivity. 6-ketoclofarabine was also found in myocardium and liver but accounted for less than 2% of the total radioactivity in those tissues. Clofarabine was the major analyte found in myocardium (>97% region of integration) and liver (>94% region of integration). Whole body autoradiography demonstrated that the highest postdistributive concentrations of radioactivity were in the excretory organs, kidney, bladder, and gastrointestinal tract, with no remarkable suborgan distribution. In rat, dog, and human hepatocytes, 95, 96, and 99.8% [14C]clofarabine remained, respectively, after 6 h of incubation. Eleven metabolites were observed, with the largest constituting 2.5% of the radioactivity.

We have observed Feshbach resonances in collisions between ultracold 52Cr atoms. This is the first observation of collisional Feshbach resonances in an atomic species with more than one valence electron. The zero nuclear spin of 52Cr and thus the absence of a Fermi-contact interaction leads to regularly spaced resonance sequences. By comparing resonance positions with multichannel scattering calculations we determine the s-wave scattering length of the lowest (2S+1)Sigma(+)(g) potentials to be 112(14) a(0), 58(6) a(0), and -7(20) a(0) for S=6, 4, and 2, respectively, where a(0)=0.0529 nm.

We report on the generation of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a gas of chromium atoms, which have an exceptionally large magnetic dipole moment and therefore underlie anisotropic long-range interactions. The preparation of the chromium condensate requires novel cooling strategies that are adapted to its special electronic and magnetic properties. The final step to reach quantum degeneracy is forced evaporative cooling of 52Cr atoms within a crossed optical dipole trap. At a critical temperature of T(c) approximately 700 nK, we observe Bose-Einstein condensation by the appearance of a two-component velocity distribution. We are able to produce almost pure condensates with more than 50,000 condensed 52Cr atoms.

Objective: To determine whether short-term amitriptyline administration would be efficacious in the treatment of acute, nonobstructive, idiopathic lower urinary tract disease in cats., Design: Randomized controlled trial., Animals: 31 untreated male and female cats with acute, nonobstructive, idiopathic lower urinary tract disease., Procedures: Cats were treated with amitriptyline (5 mg/d; n = 16) or a placebo (15) for 7 days and monitored for pollakiuria, hematuria, and adverse events. Cats were reexamined 1 month after treatment, and owners were interviewed by telephone 6, 12, and 24 months after treatment., Results: 2 amitriptyline-treated cats were excluded from analyses because of acquired urinary tract infection. Clinical signs resolved by day 8 in 8 amitriptyline-treated and 10 control cats. There were no apparent differences in likelihood or rate of recovery from pollakiuria or hematuria between groups. Overall, clinical signs recurred significantly faster and more frequently in amitriptyline-treated than control cats. However, after excluding recurrences within 21 days of treatment, risk of recurrence was similar in both groups. Increasing age was significantly associated with increased likelihood and rate of recovery from hematuria and with decreased risk of recurrence of signs., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Results suggest that short-term amitriptyline treatment has no benefit in terms of resolution of pollakiuria and hematuria in cats with idiopathic lower urinary tract disease and may be associated with an increased risk of recurrence.
