Abstract

Dry fabrics comprised of high performance polymeric fibers have been widely used as protection layers in structures submitted to high velocity impacts (HVI). Their outstanding impact energy dissipation ability combined with an high strength-to-weight ratio make them a preferable choice in different applications such as bullet vests or blade containment systems over standard materials. Among the different approaches adopted to study these structures numerical methods assume a central role. Thanks to their reduced costs and the related possibility of evaluating the effects of single phenomena, they are often used to predict the structure ballistic limits or to study the physical events which occur during the penetration. Among the different strategies adopted to model a fabric, mesoscopic models have been largely adopted by different authors. These models assume the yarns as a continuum body while the fabric geometry is explicitly described. Nowadays yarn material models are universally assumed to be linear elastic and orthotropic. This modelling approach mostly focuses on the longitudinal behaviour of the yarn, however fiber-scale analyses and experimental results shows the importance of three-dimensional stress state on the ballistic limit. In order to obtain a three-dimensional description of the yarn strain state during the impact, a novel hyperelastic model for yarn structures here is developed. In a first step, fiber-level preliminary analyses have been performed to obtain the effective behaviour of these structure under the projectile collision. In the second step, the hyperelastic model has been implemented and identified thanks to microscopic elementary tests. Finally, a continuum model of the yarn have been performed. First results show the relevance of the hyperelastic model compared to the fiber-level observation and enhance the limit of the classical linear elastic material model.

10. Simulation of wear through mass balance in a dry contact

Abstract

Numerical investigations are carried out to simulate wear and the analysis of these simulations leads to proposing all original new wear law that takes into account interfacial particles in the contact. A 3D Discrete Element Model is presented that simulates the detachment of particles, their flow in the contact and their ejection. It shows that a layer of detached particles can be formed at the interface, separating the solids in contact. The simulations show how influential the contact geometry and the properties of the interfacial particles are in studying wear. The processes of material degradation and particle ejection are then studied separately. Their physical behavior is analyzed and simple analytical expressions are proposed. Consideration of the mass balance of the contact provides an analytical law for wear; involving the fate of the detached particles. Classical wear laws (such as Archard's law), assuming that no particle stays in the contact, appear to be a limit case of this model. 11. Modeling of muscular activation of the muscle-tendon complex using discrete element method.

Abstract

The tearing of a muscle-tendon complex (MTC) is caused by an eccentric contraction; however, the structures involved and the mechanisms of rupture are not clearly identified. The passive mechanical behavior the MTC has already been modeled and validated with the discrete element method. The muscular activation is the next needed step. The aim of this study is to model the muscle fiber activation and the muscular activation of the MTC to validate their active mechanical behaviors. Each point of the force/length relationship of the MTC (using a parabolic law for the force/length relationship of muscle fibers) is obtained with two steps: 1) a passive tensile (or contractile) test until the desired elongation is reached and 2) fiber activation during a position holding that can be managed thanks to the Discrete Element model. The muscular activation is controlled by the activation of muscle fiber. The global force/length relationship of a single fiber and of the complete MTC during muscular activation is in agreement with literature. The influence of the external shape of the structure and the pennation angle are also investigated. Results show that the different constituents of the MTC (extracellular matrix, tendon), and the geometry, play an important role during the muscular activation and enable to decrease the maximal isometric force of the MTC. Moreover, the maximal isometric force decreases when the pennation angle increases. Further studies will combine muscular activation with a stretching of the MTC, until rupture, in order to numerically reproduce the tearing of the MTC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Mechanical behaviour of polymeric fibres and their fabrics under ballistic impacts has been largely studied and determined using different methods. Classical solutions include analytical [1], semi-empirical [2] and numerical approaches [3]. Within this group, numerical approaches are one of the most promising since they are usually more accurate then analytical ones but do not require large investments in materials and time as experimental campaigns. Different numerical models have been proposed for fabrics under high velocity impact [3, 4, 5] while few attention has been dedicated to their basic constituents, i.e. fibres and yarns. In classical approaches, yarns are modelled as an homogeneous media with a linear elastic anisotropic behaviour. Their mechanical properties are usually obtained using physical assumptions and validated through analytical models which does not consider fibre-fibre interactions, inter-yarn friction, yarn section rearrangements or fibres three dimensional mechanical behaviour [3, 6, 7]. It has been proved by different studies that the previously mentioned elements have an influence on the global response of the fabric under ballistic impact [8, 9]. In order to determine a proper equivalent continuum model for yarns in highly dynamical applications, a mechanical study which goes further the analytical or experimental limitation is required. Hereafter, a numerical study of a Kevlar KM2 600 yarn transversally impacted is presented, Fig.1. The single yarn is represented at its components level, i.e. fibres, allowing to take into account fibre-fibre interaction. Abstract

International audience; This paper proposes an original method to simulate the electrical conduction in continuums with the Discrete Element Method (DEM). The proposed method is based on the graphs theory applied to electrical resistance network, where the resistance between two discrete elements is estimated through the notion of ‘transmission surface’ to assume the discrete domain as a continuous medium. In addition to the electrical conduction, the Joule heating of a DEM domain has also been developed to take full advantage of the electrical conduction.The proposed method has been implemented in the free DEM software named ‘GranOO’. The numerical results were compared against analytical approaches when applicable, or against Finite Element Method if the geometries become more complex or in case of dynamic loadings. The results are found satisfactory with errors around 3% for the electrical conduction and Joule heating of reasonably complex domains and loading cases. When it comes to more complex domains, such as electrical constriction,whilst the results remain close to those obtained with reference solutions (around 6%), they highlight the importance of taking care about the domains discretization.Finally, the proposed method is applied to detect cracks onset on a cylindrical rod torsion test to show how to take advantage of the proposed work.

Abstract

International audience; The use of cohesive zone models is an efficient way to treat the damage, especially when the crack path is known a priori. This is the case in the modeling of delamination in composite laminates. However, the simulations using cohesive zone models are expensive in a computational point of view. When using implicit time integration scheme or when solving static problems, the non-linearity related to the cohesive model requires many iterations before reaching convergence. In explicit approaches, the time step stability condition also requires an important number of iterations. In this article, a new approach based on a separated representation of the solution is proposed. The Proper Generalized Decomposition is used to build the solution. This technique, coupled with a cohesive zone model, allows a significant reduction of the computational cost. The results approximated with the PGD are very close to the ones obtained using the classical finite element approach.

Abstract

International audience; Discrete Model is based on the description of the physical state (velocity, position, temperature, magnetic moment, electric potential ..) of a large number of discrete elements that form the media to be studied. It is not based on a continuous description of the media. Thus, it is particularly well adapted to describe media evolution driven by discontinuous phenomena like the description of multi fracturation followed by debris flow like wear study. Recently, the use of discrete model has been widened to face problem encountered with complex rheological behavior and/or multi-physical behavior. Multi-physical problems face complex mathematical formulation because of the mixing of different families of differential equations when continuous approach is chosen. With the discrete model, each particle has a physical state and state evolution is due to local physical particle interaction: it is often much simple to write. To help and promote research in this area, a free platform GranOO has been developed under a C++ environment and is distributed under the GPL license. The main aspect of this platform is presented in this extended abstract and one application is given as example. Details can be found on url www.granoo.org.

Abstract

The response of glasses subjected to high pressures can be classified into three classes : normal, anomalous and intermediate depending on the deformation mechanism and the cracking pattern. The silica glass which is the scope of this work is a typical anomalous glass. The numerical study of this behavior with continuum methods (e.g. FEM, CNEM) presents several difficulties and drawbacks. Because, this requires a very small scale analysis. The discrete methods (e.g. MD, DEM) represent a good choice to simulate this behavior. However, these methods are very time consuming (CPU-wise). In this work, a discrete-continuum coupling method is proposed to study the behavior of this brittle material subjected to high pressures. The coupling results, obtained in this work, compare favorably with past experimental results.

Des exemples liés à l’usinage des composites et au surfaçage du verre sont présentés. Une extension de la méthode pour étudier le comportement des mousses est ensuite proposée et imagée par des premiers résultats.

Abstract

The discrete element method (DEM) presents an alternative way to model complex mechanical problems of silica glass, such as brittle fracture. Since discontinuities are naturally considered by DEM, no complex transition procedure from continuum phase to discontinuum one is required. However, to ensure that DEM can properly reproduce the silica glass cracking mechanisms, it is necessary to correctly model the different features characterizing its mechanical behavior before fracture. Particularly, it is necessary to correctly model the densification process of this material, which is known to strongly influence the fracture mechanisms. The present paper proposes a new and very promising way to model such process, which is assumed to occur only under hydrostatic pressure. An accurate predictive-corrective densification model is developed. This model shows a great flexibility to reproduce extremely complex densification features. Furthermore, it involves only one calibration parameter, which makes it very easy to apply. This new model represents a major step towards accurate modeling of materials permanent deformation with the discrete element method, which has long been a huge challenge in applying this method for continuum problems. Abstract

Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are fluids whose properties vary in response to an applied magnetic field. Such fluids are typically composed of microscopic iron particles (r 1 -- 20 fim diameter, 20 -- 40% by volume) suspended in a carrier fluid such as min-eral oil or water. MR fluids are increasingly proposed for use in various mechanical sys-tem applications, many of which fall in the domain of tribology, such as smart dampers and clutches, prosthetic articulations, and controllable polishing fluids. The goal of this study is to present an overview of the topic to the tribology audience, and to develop an MR fluid model from the microscopic point of view using the discrete element method (DEM), with a long range objective to better optimize and understand MR fluid behavior in such tribological applications. As in most DEM studies, inter-particle forces are deter-mined by a force-displacement law and trajectories are calculated using Newton's sec-ond law. In this study, particle magnetization and magnetic interactions between particles have been added to the discrete element code. The global behavior of the MR fluid can be analyzed by examining the time evolution of the ensemble of particles. Micro-scopically, the known behavior is observed: particles align themselves with the external magnetic field. Macroscopically, averaging over a number of particles and a significant time interval, effective viscosity increases significantly when an external magnetic field is applied. These preliminary results would appear to establish that the DEM is a promising method to study MR fluids at the microscopic and macroscopic scales as an aid to tribo-logical design.
