Adequate knowledge is essential for responsible inland fisheries. However, many inland fisheries lack monitoring, and therefore, decision‐making for fisheries management is not reliable. In this paper, we used data from surveys and literature to estimate the life‐history and growth parameters of 16 exploited fish stocks in the Ugandan part of Lake Edward and Lake George (East Africa). The estimated parameters are pivotal indicators of fish stock status, particularly in data‐poor fisheries. The estimated parameters included maximum length (Lmax) and mean length (Lmean) as indicators of size structure in experimental and commercial catches, coefficients of length–weight relationships, length at 50% maturity (Lm50), fecundity, von Bertalanffy parameters, total mortality (Z), and natural mortality (M). These parameters were estimated using empirical formulae, statistical methods, and analyses of length frequencies. Only two stocks of semutundu Bagrus docmak exhibited significant and increasing trends in Lmax (Lake Edward) and Lmean (Lake George). The estimates for the remaining parameters were consistent with those in FishBase and other literature resources, either for the same species or related species. This consistency indicates their reliability for application in decision‐making and further assessments. Some parameters showed evidence of unsustainable fishing. For example, estimates of Lm50 for four of the assessed stocks belonging to two species (Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus and marbled lungfish Protopterus aethiopicus) were lower than baseline estimates in the studied waterbodies. Furthermore, the Lmean in catches for all the stocks were less than the optimum lengths (Lopt), which maximize catches with a minimal impact on biomass and size structure. No significant changes in Lmean, length–frequency distributions, and size at maturity could be attributed to the management changes implemented in 2018, probably because it is too early to observe changes in these parameters. However, there are positive signs attributable to the changes in management as shown by a high proportion of mature individuals in commercial catches for most of the stocks for which the proportion was calculated, and an increase in Lmean and Lmax for some stocks, such as B. docmak, in commercial or experimental catches. For millennia humans have extracted biological and physical resources from the planet to sustain societies and enable the development of technology and infrastructure. Growth in the human population and changing consumption patterns have increased the human footprint on ecosystems and their biodiversity, including in fresh waters. Freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity face many threats and it is now widely accepted that we are in a biodiversity crisis. One means of protecting and restoring freshwater biodiversity is to better manage the exploitation of freshwater biota and aggregate resources (e.g., sand, gravel, and boulders). Here we outline the threats arising from such exploitation and identify response options to ensure that methods and levels of extraction are sustainable and allow recovery of over-exploited freshwater biodiversity and ecosystems. The guidance we provide will enable practitioners, policy-makers, and resource stewards to embrace effective, sustainable, and evidence-based approaches to resource extraction. Response options for managing species exploitation include strengthening assessment and reporting, using science-based approaches to reduce overexploitation and support recovery, embracing community engagement, and building or tightening legislation. Response options for managing exploitation of freshwater aggregate resources include reducing demand for harvest, strengthening governance, reporting, and monitoring of environmental impacts, and promoting the restoration of degraded ecosystems or compensating for losses. Diverse case studies highlight examples of where various management actions have been implemented in an effort to consider how they can be scaled up and adapted to other contexts. As an important contributor to Louisiana’s economy, the commercial freshwater fisheries have been the subject of growing attention in recent years by resource managers as the industry appears to be on the brink of collapse. Fewer participants are entering the field, fish buyers and processors are closing, and market prices remain stagnant. To better understand this industry, we conducted a study to characterize the commercial freshwater fisheries in Louisiana including the fishermen, the fishing operations, the effort across the state, local knowledge on management issue and barriers and opportunities for the future of the industry. We completed structured interviews at fish houses across Louisiana. The average full-time fisherman was 56 years old with about 34 years of commercial fishing experience, and catfish (Ictaluridae spp.) and buffalo (Ictobius spp.) appear to be the most sought-after finfish; however, this slightly differs by region. Overall, this study provides in-depth insight into the trends, problems, and successes of Louisiana’s freshwater commercial fisheries. This information will allow managers and other groups like cooperative extension to identify and design opportunities for the industry and utilize their information in management across the state. This study delves into the realm of competitive sport fishing in Greece's inland waters, where recent years have witnessed a notable surge in such activities. Despite the absence of official records, insights into the sport's trend and the motivations and socio-demographic characteristics of anglers participating in fishing competitions were gleaned from digital data sourced from online platforms and interviews with anglers. Our findings illuminate the growing popularity of sport fishing in Greece, evident in the increasing number of fishing competitions and the burgeoning angling community. Predominantly male, anglers exhibit a strong dedication to catch-and-release practices, citing relaxation and socialization as primary motivations, with competitive aspirations also shaping their involvement. Moreover, the study highlights legislative gaps in inland water fisheries regulations, underscoring the need for updates to ensure sustainable management and to mitigate illegal activities. Additionally, there exists an opportunity to bolster anglers' ecological awareness through targeted education initiatives. This study compiled and remodelled length selectivity studies carried out on fish caught with gill nets and trammel nets in the inland fishery in Türkiye and evaluated them based on both the initial reproduction length and minimum landing size of species. The required data for the study were obtained through a literature review. 34 selectivity studies in total were identified, and 26 (76.5%) of them were carried out with gill net while the remaining 8 (23.5%) were conducted with trammel net. 24 of the studies were carried out according to SELECT (Share Each Length-class's Catch Total) and 10 of them according to Holt (1963). In conclusion, it was found that minimum conservation reference size (MCRS) values determined by the Ministry in the inland fishery in Türkiye were substantially greater than lengths at first maturity (LFMs) of species and that fishing gears used for fishing typically tended to fish mature individuals above MCRS. The major problem in terms of management is that different ideal mesh sizes are applied to different fish species that are in the same fishing place. Set nets with an ideal-mesh size for a species has a potential of catching individuals below LFM of other species in the same fishing grounds. Scientists increasingly draw on fishers' ecological knowledge (FEK) to gain a better understanding of fish biology and ecology, and inform options for fisheries management. We report on a study of FEK among fishers along the Lower Ucayali River in Peru, a region of exceptional productivity and diversity, which is also a major supplier of fish to the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon. Given a lack of available scientific information on stock status, we sought to identify temporal changes in the composition and size of exploited species by interviewing fishers from 18 communities who vary in years of fishing experience since the mid‐1950s. We develop four FEK‐based indicators to assess changes in the fish assemblage and compare findings with landings data. We find an intensification of fishing gear deployed over time and spatiotemporal shifts in the fish assemblage and reported declines in species weight, which point to a fishing‐down process with declines across multiple species. This finding is reflected in a shifting baseline among our participants, whereby younger generations of fishers have different expectations regarding the distribution and size of species. Our study points to the importance of spillover effects from the nearby Pacaya‐Samira National Reserve and community initiatives to support the regional fishery. Reference to fishers' knowledge also suggests that species decline is likely underreported in aggregated landings data. Despite the dynamism and diversity of Amazonian floodplain fisheries, simple FEK‐based indicators can provide useful information for understanding fishing‐induced changes in the fish assemblage. Abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) is a problem that is increasingly of concern to global fisheries resources and the aquatic environment. Nearly 2% of all fishing gear used in marine fisheries is lost to the ocean annually. This has negative impacts on the aquatic ecosystem, which includes but not limited to ghostfishing mortality to commercial, recreational and protected species, degradation of benthic habitat, and change to the ecosystem. Fishing gear left in the sea can drift ashore affecting recreational use of beaches and shorelines and poses hazards to navigation. Most of the research on ALDFG has been in the marine fisheries of the developed world with very few studies in the inland fisheries, mostly in the developing world of sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. This paper reviews and synthesizes literature about the status of ALDFG in inland fisheries globally. Only 16 studies, between 1970 to 2023, that referenced ALDFG causes, levels, impacts, and preventive measures were found. Thus, this review highlights that ALDFG in inland fisheries remains a highly understudied area of aquatic plastic pollution. Estimates of recreational fishing effort and catch are needed to inform fisheries management, but such estimates can be challenging to obtain. We combined a zig‐zag line transect survey of buoys, a fisheries enforcement survey and a drone survey to estimate recreational effort in the open‐access trap fishery for signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) in the sixth largest lake in Europe, Lake Vättern, Sweden. Using supporting variables such as size of nearby ports and bathymetry, our model‐assisted estimate of total effort was 6400 (±4300 CI) buoys during the three‐weekend season. Using the frequency of buoys to traps as a constant, the total number of crayfish traps was estimated to be 25,500 (±17,000 CI). The sampling design and methods presented are useful for ecologists and resource managers to design future multi‐source surveys of recreational trap fishing effort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Live-bait species are widely used in recreational fishing throughout the United States. However, the use of invasive fish species as live bait has been identified as a common pathway for their introduction into aquatic ecosystems. We assessed the role that the live-bait industry has in facilitating the introduction of nonnative and invasive species into Texas rivers. We focused on two invasive cyprinodontid species, the Sheepshead Minnow Cyprinodon variegatus and Gulf Killifish Fundulus grandis, which are believed to have been introduced into inland Texas rivers via bait-bucket releases by anglers. Methods: We conducted telephone and in-person surveys of live-bait shops in Texas on a seasonal basis (summer, fall, winter, spring) for 1 year. Locally owned bait shops and regional aquaculture facilities and hatcheries were included in the surveys. Result: Surveys did not reveal the presence of these invasive cyprinodontids in inland bait shops but did reveal the sale of nonnative Goldfish Carassius auratus and their black color morph, the black salty goldfish. Surveys conducted among inland and coastal live bait shops confirmed the sale of only one nonnative bait fish and six bait items native only to certain regions of Texas. Telephone surveys with aquaculture industry experts revealed that the aquaculture industry was also facilitating the movement of nonnative game and nongame fish species throughout the state. Conclusion: Given the potential for nonnative and invasive species to negatively affect recipient aquatic ecosystems, the continued distribution of such species within the aquaculture industry represents a potential threat in Texas. Our findings highlight the need for close monitoring of the live-bait industry in the state to prevent further introductions into inland waters and reduce potential ecological risks to native fish populations and overall ecosystem functions and services. Context: Owing to the use of fyke-nets with poor size selectivity in crayfish fishery, 40.7% of the landed undersized catch is discarded as bycatch. Aims: This study investigated the effects of using hexagonal mesh (Hex34) instead of diamond nets (Com34) in the traditional crayfish fyke-net and the application of a sorting-grid (SG20, SG25, SG30) and stiff-rigged net (SRN34, SRN42, SRN50) on size selectivity. Methods: A covered codend technique was used for determining the size selectivity of codends. Key results: The average length at 50% retention probability (L 50, in total length) for the trial groups of Com34, Hex34, SG20, SG25, SG30, SRN34, SRN42 and SRN50 was estimated as 9.1, 9.5, 10.1, 11.0, 12.3, 10.0, 10.3 and 11.1 cm respectively. Additionally, the discard rates were computed in the same order as 37.0, 27.3, 14.9, 5.8, 1.9, 19.1, 9.4 and 7.7%. Conclusions: In conclusion, commercial crayfish (Com34) fyke-nets have a significantly high discard rate. In the modifications tested, the discard rate has been reduced to as low as 1.9%. When taking into account both L 50 and fishing efficiency indicators, SRN42 was determined as the most successful trial group. Implications: The application of the study results will make a significant contribution to the sustainability of natural crayfish stocks of Türkiye. Crayfish are important freshwater invertebrates both ecologically and economically. In Turkey, there is no aquaculture of this species, and it is solely produced through fishing. Owing to poor size selectivity of the fyke-nets used in harvesting this species, the rate of undersized catch is quite high (40.7%). While women globally make up nearly half of the fisheries workforce, their contribution to the sector has long been overlooked with implications for fisheries management. To assess women's participation in small-scale fisheries (SSF) management and related socio-cultural, environmental, and economic impacts, we conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature (n = 124 case studies). Women had no or limited participation in more than 80% of the examined case studies reporting their participation level in SSF management. Women's exclusion from SSF management resulted in negative outcomes, whereas their active participation was associated with various positive impacts at multiple scales. Most of the documented impacts were socio-cultural, suggesting a gap in documenting environmental impacts stemmed from women's participation in SSF management. Importantly, most impacts reported affected the social-ecological system scale, suggesting that gender inclusion may contribute to improving the management of SSF social-ecological systems. We conclude by highlighting the need to foster gender perspectives in data collection methods used in fisheries research, in SSF management, and in ecological research on SSF social-ecological systems. The large-scale production and economy of French freshwater fisheries is not documented in the scientific literature. This article fills this knowledge gap by synthesizing the data collected since the post-war period, including a large part of the grey literature. France presents a wide variety of surface waters, benefiting from a reduction in pollution and a growing population with an emphasis on leisure activities and on locally sourced food products. Despite this favorable geographical, ecological and human situation, French freshwater fisheries have been in decline since the mid-1970s with a chronically negative trade balance for aquatic products. During this period, numbers of commercial fishers have decreased three-fold due to their affiliation to an agricultural status, and to their dependence on migratory species such as eel, shad and lamprey, which are all in decline. Simultaneously, numbers of anglers have also seen a slow but continuous decline, cushioned somewhat in the last 10 years thanks to the creation of sub-annual fishing cards and the expansion of the total to include the younger classes. Vestiges of a non-commercial fishery, similar to recreational subsistence fishing and employing gear such as dip nets, traps, long lines or even gillnets, have been maintained in a much reduced state around large rivers as well as in the marshes and estuaries of the Atlantic coast. In this detailed study of these different categories of fishing practices in the mid-2010s, we estimate numbers of fishers at 2 million active anglers, 4000 subsistence fishers, and 400 commercial fishers. Their catches are roughly 7600, 200 and 1200 tonnes/year, respectively, for a total of 9000 tonnes/year. Migratory freshwater fish species are particularly susceptible to population decline because they rely on multiple habitats and open passages to complete their life cycle. Understanding the migratory patterns of cyprinids is thus essential for their management and conservation. Gnathopogon caerelescens, a small cyprinid species endemic to Lake Biwa (Japan), is one of the most important targets of inland fisheries. However, their abundance has dramatically decreased. By using an extensive alizarin complexone-mark-and-recapture program for of G. caerelescens juveniles, together with the collaboration of commercial fishermen, this cyprinid fish was demonstrated as: (1) migrating from a nursery lagoon toward the main lake and moving along the near-shore from spring to autumn; (2) migrating from the near-shore shallow habitats to off-shore deep habitats from autumn to winter; and (3) migrating to a nursery lagoon from off-shore deep habitats from winter to spring. These results highlighted the importance of protecting individual spawning/nursery habitats, and maintaining connectivity between each spawning/nursery habitat and the lake system. Introductions of non-native fish are intended to have positive social outcomes, although they can also result in negative environmental consequences. Recently, incidental introduction of tilapia (Oreochromis cf. niloticus) was recorded in the Kikori River, Papua New Guinea. This study investigated the abundance of Oreochromis cf. niloticus relative to native fish species in the Kikori Town market, and interviewed market vendors to gauge the local perception of Oreochromis cf. niloticus. Market data were collected over eight days with 1474 individual fish observed. Oreochromis cf. niloticus comprised 11.4% (n = 168) of fish and was the largest contributor of biomass (40.2%). Market vendors reported that Oreochromis cf. niloticus was easy to catch and sell, and ranked it highly in sale preference compared to native species. There is potential to explore export markets for Kikori River Oreochromis cf. niloticus in PNG's highland provinces to expand economic opportunities for local communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recreational fisheries represent a socially, ecologically, and economically significant component of global fisheries. The U.S. Inland Creel and Angler Survey Catalog (CreelCat) database includes inland recreational fisheries survey data across the United States to facilitate large‐scale analyses. However, because survey methods differ, a statistical method capable of integrating these surveys is necessary to assess patterns and relationships across regions. Here, we developed a hierarchical generalized linear mixed modeling approach to estimate the relationship between daily recreational fisheries catch and effort based on waterbody, socio‐economic, and ecological covariates. We applied this approach to CreelCat data on lentic waterbodies and found that recreational fisheries catch and effort were non‐linearly related (i.e., catch per unit of effort declined as effort increased), where effort varied regionally and by waterbody area, median county age, and distance to nearest primary road. This modeling approach could be used to inform data‐poor regions or waterbodies, make comparisons across spatial scales, and, with the inclusion of socio‐economic and ecological factors, inform management techniques in an era of shifting demographics and landscapes. Improved knowledge is required to draw the attention of policymakers and stimulate effective management measures to accelerate the sustainability of the freshwater fisheries. In line with this requirement, this paper provides the state of knowledge of the aquatic ecosystem and fisheries of the Lake Edward system, East Africa, focusing on lakes Edward, George and the Kazinga channel. The state of knowledge was accomplished by reviewing existing data and information on aspects of primary productivity and water quality, invertebrates, fish fauna, fish life history and ecology, and fisheries. The waterbodies have been monitored since the 1930s, albeit sporadically, providing data on all the above aspects but with substantial temporal gaps. Adequate and updated data and information exist on the water quality status of the water bodies, extant aquatic taxa (including fishes) and fish catches but with uncertainties in the latter. Data and information gaps exist on the abundance of biotic communities, fish life history, quantitative trophic ecology and fisheries management reference points. The aggregated data and information can directly support decisions for fisheries management. We use the sustainable livelihood approach (SLA) to assess the strengths and weaknesses of small-scale fisheries (SSF) in the Paraná River delta (Argentina), their vulnerability to different external stressors, and their role in the rural economy. Methods included semi-structured interviews and participant observation to assess 33 criteria corresponding to human, social, natural, physical, and financial capitals and to analyze the main governmental structures in fisheries management and policies. Natural, physical, and human capital showed the highest scores, while social and financial assets presented the lowest. Identified government institutions showed little capacity to address capital-strengthening measures. The SLA assessment allowed us to understand the critical factors and institutions that affect the performance of inland SSF and suggest that the fisheries of the lower Paraná River are highly vulnerable in the face of climate change and other external stressors. Hatchery programmes are frequently used to supplement inland fisheries, yet achieving successful management outcomes often requires information on stocked versus naturally reproduced fish abundance. Parentage‐based tagging – genetically assigning offspring to their parents – has potential to be an effective approach for distinguishing stocked and naturally reproduced fish. However, several challenges may limit its application to inland fisheries, including genetic relatedness among populations that can affect identification accuracy and high costs of genotyping large broodstocks. Here, we demonstrate the efficacy of parentage‐based tagging based on broodmothers in the Lake Ontario Chinook Salmon fishery, which uses thousands of broodparents and has potential for substantial relatedness between stocked and naturally reproduced fish. Restricting parent sampling to broodmothers reduced costs by two‐thirds, was logistically pragmatic, and achieved >95% accuracy in distinguishing stocked from naturally reproduced salmon. Privatization, often proposed as a means to regulate natural resource use, sometimes paradoxically leads to overexploitation and social exclusion. Within the unique context of Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) Regency, Indonesia, the privatization of swamp floodplains and rivers via the "Lelang Lebak, Lebung, Sungai" (L3S) system is a testament to this dilemma. L3S grants auction winners exclusive rights to fish, thereby privatizing common-pool resources. This study delves into the intricacies of the L3S mechanism, highlighting its significance in guiding inland fisheries' management. Through stakeholder analysis, we pinpoint the crucial actors, as well as their interests, influence, and interrelationships. Our investigation revealed 20 distinct stakeholders, each playing different roles within the L3S framework. Based on their influence and vested interests, these stakeholders are categorized as key players, subjects, context setters, and crowds. This classification aids in discerning potential conflicts, cooperation, and synergies. Effective L3S execution hinges on collaboration, especially with pivotal entities such as fishery services, village and district heads, and village-owned enterprises. Insights gathered during the study indicate that while privatization has streamlined resource distribution, it intensifies overfishing and deepens socioeconomic divisions. Inland fisheries are considered to have the potential to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition globally. However, its contribution has been unrecognized. The study aimed to analyze the determinants of food security status among households involved and uninvolved in inland fisheries in Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), Limpopo Province. Methods: A total of 115 households were interviewed following snowball, purposive, and simple random sampling techniques. Descriptive statistics, Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), and Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR) were used as data analysis tools. These tools were used to obtain the socio-economic characteristics of households and the determinants of food security status. Results: A total of 72 households were identified as fishers, while 43 households were not fishers. Moreover, the results confirm that there was no significant difference in the food security status of households involved in inland fisheries and those who were not involved; however, most of them were mildly food insecure. Small-scale fisheries (SSF) account for much of the global fish catch, but data to assess them often do not exist, impeding assessments of their historical dynamics and status. Here, we propose an approach to assess 'data-less' SSF using local knowledge to produce data, life history theory to describe their historical multispecies dynamics, and length-based reference points to evaluate stock status. We demonstrate use of this approach in three data-less SSFs of the Congo Basin. Fishers' recalls of past fishing events indicated fish catch declined by 65–80% over the last half-century. Declines in and depletion of many historically important species reduced the diversity of exploited species, making the species composition of the catch more homogenous in recent years. Length-at-catch of 11 of the 12 most important species were below their respective lengths-at-maturity and optimal lengths (obtained from Fishbase) in recent years, indicating overfishing. The most overfished species were large-bodied and found in the Congo mainstem. These results show the approach can suitably assess data-less SSF. Fishers' knowledge produced data at a fraction of the cost and effort of collecting fisheries landings data. Historical and current data on fish catch, length-at-catch, and species diversity can inform management and restoration efforts to curb shifting baselines of these fisheries. Context. As social-ecological systems, recreational fisheries often vary temporally in response to environmental changes affecting ecological processes and human behaviour. Monitoring such variability in this ecosystem service can guide adaptive management measures for sustainability. Aims. This novel research for Australian, sought to quantify interannual changes in the freshwater recreational fisheries of five key (i.e. commonly caught) finfish species (Murray cod, Maccullochella peelii; golden perch, Macquaria ambigua; Australian bass, Percalates novemaculeata; brown trout, Salmo trutta; and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss) in relation to a series of extreme climate-related events and the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. Annual estimates during 2013-14, 2017-18 and 2019-20 of freshwater fishing effort and catch across New South Wales, Australia, were derived from off-site surveys and compared in relation to a severe drought period, the 'Black Summer' bushfires, widespread flooding and the COVID-19 pandemic, all of which affected fish productivity or human mobility. Key results. There were significant declines in fishing effort between 2013-14, the year preceding the extreme environmental events and the pandemic, and 2017-18 and 2019-20. Catch across the five species was also significantly lower in 2019-20. Catch of species such as golden perch and rainbow trout declined from 2013-14 to 2019-20. Conclusions and implications. Objective: To identify occupational hazards and hazard control strategies adopted by inland fishers of Odisha state in India. Methods: Information on occupational hazards faced by fishers was collected by personal interviews with 90 riverine and reservoir fishers of Odisha. Through qualitative discussions with key informants and review of literature, a list of occupational hazards were prepared and classified into physical, ergonomics, psychosocial, and natural. Responses were quantified, and descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. Results: Occupational hazards faced by fishers were physical (94%), ergonomic (75%), psychosocial (50%), and natural (34%) in nature. Physical hazards include sharp fishing instruments, uneven surfaces, high temperatures, and wet/slippery areas on the vessel along with the presence of snake/leech/crocodile/fish fin rays. About 97% of reservoir and 90% of the riverine fishers reported physical hazards leading to cuts, fractures, dehydration, headache, sunburn, snakebite, leech bite, crocodile bite, and injuries due to fish fin rays. Heavy nature of work and force exerting activities caused pain in the upper back (50%), shoulders (45%), and lower back (41%). Regarding psychosocial hazard, stress (31%), and anxiety (23%) was reported. Common reasons for this were uncertainty in fish catch and extended working hours, causing tiredness, headache, dizziness, and fatigue. Natural hazards like cyclones, floods, and excessive rain caused financial loss and damage to fishing nets and boats. Regarding personal protective equipment (PPE), floating buoys were used by 26% of riverine and 43% of reservoir fishers to avoid drowning. Conclusion: Occupational hazards in the inland fishing sector were identified as physical, ergonomic, psychosocial, and natural. No particular hazard control strategy was reported to be used. Background: Inland fisheries are considered to have the potential to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition globally. However, its contribution has been unrecognized. The study aimed to analyze the determinants of food security status among households involved and uninvolved in inland fisheries in Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), Limpopo Province. Methods: A total of 115 households were interviewed following snowball, purposive, and simple random sampling techniques. Descriptive statistics, Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), and Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR) were used as data analysis tools. These tools were used to obtain the socio-economic characteristics of households and the determinants of food security status. Results: A total of 72 households were identified as fishers, while 43 households were not fishers. Moreover, the results confirm that there was no significant difference in the food security status of households involved in inland fisheries and those who were not involved; however, most of them were mildly food insecure. We quantified bycatch rates and determined selection criteria of landed narrow‐clawed crayfish (Pontastacus leptodactylus) in Turkey's most crucial crayfish production centres in 2020 and 2021. Subsamples (6078 individuals) of catches from 225 commercial fishermen were compared to 4836 crayfish landed without selection criteria during research fishing. Selection criteria used by traders for crayfish in commercial fishing purchasing centres included: (i) undersized; (ii) dead; (iii) soft shells; (iv) missing extremities; (v) lesions; and (vi) covered with moss. Based on the selection criteria, 77.2% ± 4.1 (95% confidence interval: 68.4–86.0) of the commercial catch were removed from the production chain as landed bycatch. The bycatch rate was higher than the global marine bycatch rate (40.4%). New studies are needed to improve fyke net selectivity, reduce the bycatch rate (40.7%) of undersized individuals, and determine the fate of bycatch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inland waters support the livelihoods of up to 820 million people and provide fisheries that make an essential contribution towards food security, particularly in the developing world where 90% of inland fisheries catch is consumed. Despite their importance, inland fisheries are overlooked in favour of other water use sectors deemed more economically important. Inland fisheries are also driven by external factors such as climate change and habitat loss, which impedes our ability to manage them sustainably. Using a river basin approach to allocate fish catch, we have provided an integrated picture of how different inland water bodies contribute to global inland fisheries catches. There is a substantial amount of information available on inland fisheries, but it has never been synthesised to build this global picture. Fishery statistics from river basins, lakes, floodplains, hydrobasins, and countries covering a time span from 1960–2018 were analysed. Collation of basin‐scale fisheries statistics suggests a global inland catch of ≈17.4 million tonnes (PSE = ±3.93 million tonnes) in 2010, considerably more than the 10.8 million tonnes published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), but in line with estimates based on household consumption. The figure is considered a likely maximum due to recent reductions in catches because of closures, threats, and fisheries declines in the most productive fisheries. It is recommended that sentinel fisheries, which are important for food provision, employment, or where threats facing a fishery could cause a deterioration in catch, are identified to provide the baseline for a global monitoring programme. Recreational anglers have been key players in aquatic conservation, but this role is increasingly obscured. Other environmental sectors are now more visible stakeholders engaged with biodiversity. Recreational fishing has relevant environmental and moral implications, but these can be resolved via improved governance and management. More difficult is replacing the stewardship capacity provided by anglers. When analysed against a novel environmental stewardship framework based on place and identity, care, knowledge and agency, we find that marginalizing anglers could diminish aquatic biodiversity conservation. This outcome is likely because excellence in recreational fishing involves habituation of skills and ethical imperatives associated with sustainable and responsible use of fish populations. These dimensions are probably not so pertinent and correspondingly less developed in other nature stakeholders. Importantly, catching and killing wild animals catapults anglers into a food web and associated ecological conscience that most other outdoor activities cannot generate. As a result, recreational fishing often engenders feelings of care and responsibility for aquatic systems that support personal well‐being, bridging the stewardship value‐action gap through development of local assessment, management and evaluative competencies and associated agency. Transdisciplinary cooperation with scientists, managers and policymakers can unleash the stewardship potential of recreational anglers and engage their capacity for the common good. Inland fisheries in the Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA-TFCA) offer food security to the riverine communities across the region. They also contribute towards the attainment of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 15, which aim to alleviate poverty and maintain biodiversity conservation. Despite this significant role, the fisheries have suffered severe declines in the previous decades due to multiple factors, such as overfishing and poor legislation. Furthermore, climate change is exerting pressure by altering the ecology and productivity of the river systems. The unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have further constrained management efforts. Attempts to address these challenges have pointed towards transboundary fisheries management as a silver bullet in moving towards sustainable fisheries management. However, the implementation of this strategy in the region has encountered numerous roadblocks, thereby subjecting the river ecosystem to a wider environmental threat, with dire consequences on livelihoods. This paper reviews existing management and governance structures together with key informant interviews to elicit primary and secondary data essential for management at the regional level. The study identifies conflicting regulations, and inadequate policies and institutions across the region as major bottlenecks affecting the successful implementation of transboundary fisheries management. Tropical inland capture fisheries are susceptible to a series of vulnerabilities such as habitat destruction, biodiversity loss, pollution, overfishing, invasive species and anthropogenic climate change. A comprehensive review of the impact of climatic uncertainties on Indian inland fisheries has not been adequately attempted yet. Recent approaches emphasizing ecosystem-based management in a regional context, specific to inland fisheries for combating climatic changes, have not been reported to date. The paper presents a critical bibliometric review of the climatic vulnerabilities faced by Indian inland fishery resources and various adaptive and mitigation strategies put forward by the country for the sustainability of the resources. In this communication, a systematic review of the impact of climate change and other stressors on various inland ecosystems of the subcontinent and the ecosystem-based management strategies adopted in India is presented and discussed. Riverine fisheries will have a knock-on effect due to the changes in water flow and increased irrigation in the agriculture sector to cope with the climate change impact. The present study showed a very high perception existing in the fishing community about climate change observed in the last 10 years. About 95% of fishermen understand temperature and sea levels are changing, whereas 91% responded that rainfall is changing and salinity also is increasing and 86% think extreme rainfall is affecting productivity. Moreover, though the monsoon period is shorter than the non-monsoon period, about 62.3% of the total fish catch in River Cauvery takes place during the monsoon. The variations in climate can enormously impact the inland fisheries, especially the riverine resources, their productivity and sustainability. With this view, it was attempted to: (i) investigate the changing climate trends in the major river basins of the Peninsular region of India over the decades, (ii) key drivers and its implication on the fish catch, biodiversity, inland fisheries, (iii) analyse the perception of the fishermen and (iv) suggest appropriate strategies like the development of climate-smart villages and waterbodies for livelihood and sustainable utilization of the invaluable biological resources. Invasive species are a global concern. After an invasive species establishes, they often disrupt ecosystems leading to new dynamics and species interactions, making management efforts difficult. Panarchy theory is a conceptual framework to account for the dual and seemingly contradictory characteristics (stability and change) of all complex systems across distinct spatial and temporal scales. Panarchy theory has the potential to be applied to gain better insight into invaded system dynamics by creating a framework to characterize complex natural systems. This framework allows for management actions (e.g., whole-lake biomanipulations, invasive species control, native species restoration) to be leveraged against natural and induced ecosystem processes, providing a greater probability of desired outcomes. In this review, panarchy theory is applied to invasive species management using rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax as a case study. First, panarchy theory and the invasion history and subsequent ecological effects of rainbow smelt in inland lakes were reviewed. Second, rainbow smelt eradication and control efforts were reviewed to better understand mechanisms that led to long-term success or failure. Last, panarchy theory was applied to discuss future control and(or) native species restoration efforts in invaded lakes. This review found that invasive rainbow smelt cause negative effects on some native ecosystems. The success of invasive rainbow smelt control and(or) eradication efforts depended on whether: 1) enough rainbow smelt were removed to devoid their niche space; and 2) devoid niche space was filled with desired native species from remnant populations or through stocking. This review suggested that the probability of successful invasive species control and(or) native species restoration may be dependent on the four phases of the nested adaptive cycle (i.e., growth, conservation, release, and reorganization) through management intervention during the release phase. The application of panarchy theory should be viewed as a conceptual extension of efforts to restore ecosystems and(or) manage fisheries using a food web and ecosystem context (i.e., "food web thinking", ecosystem-based fisheries management). In the Ngao River basin of Northern Thailand, over 50 ethnic Karen communities practice successful riverine community-based conservation (CBC) programs. While institutional approaches provide insights for conservation successes, critical approaches are needed to understand the context that partially determines communities' actions. Thus, drawing on political ecology and using a rooted networks framework to investigate the introduction and management of these programs, the first author, a North America-based researcher, remotely collaborated with the second, a local community researcher, to conduct qualitative fieldwork to understand the conditions and connections that shape and constrain communities. We found that networked relations with outsiders threatened food security and self-determination, and enabled opportunities to respond to these threats through river conservation. "Rooted" relations with the environment allowed communities to recognize the positive impacts of conservation. Context: Overfishing has been historically considered as the main cause of fish stock depletion in the Magdalena River basin, Colombia, whereas the environmental context in which fisheries take place has not been considered. Aims: The purpose of this research was to answer the following question: have anthropic activities, other than fishing, influenced the decrease in fishery production in the Magdalena River basin between 1980 and 2015? Methods: We analysed diverse variables that were used as proxies for different environmental degradation processes, including sediment load, forest cover, flow rates, reservoir volume <1200 m above sea level, gold production and human population growth. We compared these variables with fishery production between 1980 and 2015 by using cluster analysis, principal-component analysis (PCA) and principal-component regression (PCR). Key results: Our findings confirmed that environmental degradation accounts for 61% of the reduction of fishery production. Conclusions: The traditional approach of holding fishers accountable for the decline of fishery production is misleading, and, therefore, a better understanding of the overall system is necessary before implementing restrictions on fishing activities. Implications: Hence, fishery management should also integrate economic and social variables that affect ecosystem services within the basin into the analysis and decision processes. A 35-year survey showed that yield depends on environmental variables. Overfishing is not always the main factor reducing fishery yields, but it is a flaw in traditional policies. Pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) is a European fresh and brackish water piscivorous fish, important as a key predator and a valuable fisheries species. Despite concerns that some stocks are depleting due to overfishing and environmental changes, stock assessments are implemented sporadically. We provide an overview of data collection and population assessments currently used for nine pikeperch stocks across six European countries and apply a unified assessment framework (Bayesian surplus production models) to evaluate population status and trends. Our results show that three stocks, including two in the Baltic Sea, are strongly depleted, with estimated biomasses considerably lower than the biomass at maximum sustainable yield (B MSY). Other stocks are close to their estimated B MSY. Further, recent population trends suggest that only one stock (Kvädöfjärden) is increasing, whereas three (Curonian Lagoon, Lipno, Galtfjärden) are rapidly declining. In most cases the stocks with a favorable status or signs of recovery were also those for which strong management strategies have been implemented. Importantly, although most stocks are strongly targeted by recreational fishing, estimates of recreational catch are highly uncertain. We highlight an urgent need to improve pikeperch scientific monitoring and assessment of recreational catches. • One third of pikeperch stocks assessed were depleted below MSY. • Stocks with favorable status reflected their strong management strategies. • Cessation of commercial fishing did not necessarily promote recovery. • Bayesian surplus production modeling (JABBA) effectively revealed stock trends. • Recreational fishing is important for most stocks but catches usually remain unknown. A seminal report by Peter H. Pearse (1988; Rising to the Challenge: A New Policy for Canada’s Freshwater Fisheries, Canadian Wildlife Federation, Ottawa) outlined 62 policy recommendations focused on the management of Canada’s inland fisheries. Over three decades later, freshwater ecosystems and inland fisheries in Canada are still facing similar challenges with many emerging ones that could not have been foreseen. Here, we reflect on the contemporary relevance of the Pearse Report and propose recommendations that policy makers should consider. Broadly, our recommendations are: (1) manage fishes, fisheries, and habitat using a holistic co-management framework, with clearly defined fishery jurisdictions and partnerships with Indigenous governments; (2) engage in transparent, inclusive, and agile research to support decision-making; (3) facilitate knowledge co-production, involving interdisciplinary projects with diverse groups of actors and sectors including Indigenous Peoples, anglers, policy makers, scientists/researchers, governments, and the public; (4) embrace technological advances to support freshwater fisheries stock assessment and management; and (5) align policy and management activities in Canada with global initiatives related to increasing the sustainability of inland fisheries. We advocate for an updated comprehensive report such as the Pearse Report to ensure that we embrace robust, inclusive, and sustainable management strategies and policies for Canada’s inland fisheries for the next 30 years. It is time to again rise to the challenge.

AbstractThis paper investigated the roles and functions performed by rural households along the inland fishery value chain in the Vhembe District Municipality in Limpopo Province. Primary data was collected from 151 fishing and non-fishing households. Descriptive statistics was employed to profile the socio-economic characteristics of households. Pearson Chi-square and Pearson Product Moment Correlation were used to examine the relationship between socio-economic characteristics (gender and age) of households and their function along the inland fisheries value chain. The study found a positive relationship between gender and function of consumer at 1% probability level. In addition, the correlation between age and function of input supplier and consumer were 0.293 and 0.080 respectively. Consequently, the results show that households play the role of input supplier, fishers, processor, trader and consumer. Therefore, the study calls on the government to create an enabling environment that will encourage households to partake in the value chain of inland fisheries to promote rural livelihoods and to encourage women to participate in inland fisheries.

The study investigated factors that influence the participation of rural households in inland fisheries in the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality of the Limpopo Province. Data was collected from sixty rural households using purposive and simple random sampling techniques. The objectives were to identify and profile the socio-economic characteristics of rural households and, to determine factors that influence the participation of rural households in inland fisheries. Descriptive statistics and Binary logistic model were employed to achieve these objectives. The findings show that only 42% of rural households participate in inland fisheries. Additionally, about 5% of females are reported as participants of inland fisheries in the Mopani District Municipality. Moreover, gender of the household head has a positive influence on participation while, access to credits, type of agricultural activity and source of income had a negative influence. Decision‐makers in inland fisheries management must balance ecologically and socially palatable objectives for ecosystem services within financial or physical constraints. Climate change has transformed the potential range of ecosystem services available. The Resist‐Accept‐Direct (RAD) framework offers a foundation for responding to climate‐induced ecosystem modification; however, ecosystem trajectories and current practices must be understood to improve future decisions. Using Wisconsin's diverse inland fisheries as a case study, management strategies for recreational and subsistence fisheries in response to climate change were reviewed within the RAD framework. Current strategies largely focus on resist actions, while future strategies may need to shift toward accept or direct actions. A participatory adaptive management framework and co‐production of policies between state and tribal agencies could prioritise lakes for appropriate management action, with the goal of providing a landscape of diverse fishing opportunities. Unselective fishing involves activities that target the entire assemblage rather than specific fish species, size classes, or trophic levels. This common fishing approach has been in practice for decades in inland waters in China but its implications for biodiversity remain unclear. We addressed this issue by studying fish assemblages in freshwater lakes (five fishing lakes, one reference lake, and a total of 51 sampling sites) between pre- and post-fishing time-periods in Eastern China during 2017–2019. The effects of lake, fishing period, and their interactions on fish abundance, biomass, and diversity indices were assessed. Multivariate analysis was conducted to test for differences in fish assemblages among lakes and between fishing periods. After the implementation of fishing activities, significant reductions in fish species richness, abundance, biomass, and all three life-history strategies (opportunistic, equilibrium, and periodic) were observed in fishing lakes, whereas opposite trends were observed in the reference lake. Compositional similarity of fish assemblages among fishing lakes increased over the three-year monitoring period. Our results suggest that unselective fishing reduces fish diversity and homogenizes fish assemblage structure in lakes. These findings have important implications for protecting both biodiversity and fisheries in inland waters in China and are applicable to other countries or regions that rely on fish as a major food source.

The fishery for the African tigerfish Hydrocynus vittatus in northern Namibia makes a substantial contribution to surrounding food security and stimulates the local economy through subsistence and recreational fishing. However, local fishers suggest that catch rates of H. vittatus have declined and the fish are now smaller. The Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources conducted annual gill net surveys in the Kavango River from 1994 to 2018. These standardised surveys were used to compare catch per unit effort data and length frequencies of H. vittatus between intensively fished areas and a freshwater protected area (FPA). The catch per unit effort (by numbers and mass) and proportion (56% vs 10–20%) of mature fish (males >180 mm fork length and females >280 mm fork length) were higher inside the FPA, compared with those outside. The H. vittatus populations, both outside and inside the FPA, are subject to overfishing and management actions should be taken to secure this important fishery resource for subsistence and recreational fishers. Small-scale fishing, characterised by small groups of people working with basic technology and little investment, is an important economic activity in regional and global contexts. In Latin America, inland fisheries play a very important socio-economic role, providing food and income to local families, alleviating poverty, and contributing to social well-being. They are often structured as a social cooperative, as a way to ensure productivity. Cooperatives tend to be sustainable, and their performance can be judged from the impact they have on the social, economic, and environmental spheres. The aim of this study was to measure the sustainability of inland fishing cooperatives in Mexico from these three viewpoints. Though cooperatives generally show a medium-high level of sustainability, on account of their historical background and their contribution to social and economic indicators, our results revealed some weaknesses in terms of environmental indicators, which are locked in a negative relationship with economic ones. Social indicators, however, were positively related with the other two. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a unifying call for change - guiding global actions at multiple levels of governance for a better planet and better lives. Consequently, achieving the “future we want” may be hindered by overlooking valuable natural resources and services that are not explicitly included in the SDGs. Not recognizing the direct, intrinsic value of some natural resources may threaten the sustainability of the services they provide and their contributions to the SDGs. Here, we use inland aquatic ecosystems, and the fish and fisheries therein, as an example to explore opportunities for recognition and inclusion of other natural resources that are missing from the SDGs. Key resources absent from the SDGs are less likely to be incorporated in global, national, and regional objectives, dialogues, and policies. We outline multiple potential pathways for better inclusion and capitalization of contributions from these overlooked natural resources during the operationalization of the SDGs and other global instruments.

In 1993, Colombia launched a decentralization process granting Black communities collective property rights over territories they had inhabited for centuries. Decentralization was intended to promote inclusive governance, enhance environmental governance in Black communities’ territories, and reduce poverty. This paper presents a qualitative case study of decentralized inland fisheries governance in the country’s largest Community Council. Our results suggest that decentralization policies need to account for particularities of resource systems and community dynamics. Inland fisheries governance poses specific challenges for decentralization because a) ecological dynamics supporting the resource system take place beyond the administrative boundaries of fisheries; b) rivers are public goods in Colombia, and therefore it is impossible to exclude users from accessing them; and c) regulations are not well-enforced in places where fish are sold. This calls for a combined effort from stakeholders with different rights, duties, and capacities within the governance system to coordinate actions for enforcing regulations.

Vulnerability research is an active option for fisheries to adapt to climate change. Based on the vulnerability analysis framework of the vulnerability scoping diagram, a vulnerability evaluation index system for inland fisheries in China was constructed in three dimensions, including exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity. The entropy method was used to evaluate the flood disaster vulnerability of China’s inland fisheries from 2010 to 2019 and its decomposition. The temporal and spatial differences between vulnerability and its decomposition were analyzed. Kernel density estimation and factor contribution model were used to analyze the changing trend of vulnerability and main influencing factors. The results show that: during the study period, the vulnerability of inland fisheries in China to flood disasters showed a fluctuating downward trend, and the high vulnerability areas were mainly distributed in South China and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River; the exposure index first decreased and then increased, and the high-exposure regions were mainly concentrated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River; the sensitivity index first decreased and then increased, and the high-sensitivity areas were concentrated in North-east China, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and South China; the adaptive capacity index showed a downward trend, and the areas with lower adaptive capacity were concentrated in the South-west and North-west. From the factor contribution model, the economic losses of fishery floods and the affected area had the greatest impact on the exposure index; fingerling production and freshwater fishery production had the greatest impact on the sensitivity index; the index with a lower contribution to the adaptive capacity index was the total power of fishery machinery and fishery technology promotion. Therefore, building reservoirs, optimizing aquaculture layout and promoting fishery modernization are the keys to reducing the vulnerability of inland fisheries to flood disasters.

Fishers' perceptions on the state of fisheries and the applicable fisheries management system in Lake Victoria (LV), Uganda, were assessed. Fisheries management in the lake is currently at a crossroads. The government abolished a co‐management system in November 2015 and installed the military to temporary enforce management. The objective of this study was to explore how fishers envisage future management options by assessing past management regimes and analysing perceptions of alternative regimes. A total of 273 semi‐structured interviews at six selected landing sites on LV in Uganda were conducted. Fishers targeted two dominant species, Nile perch, Lates niloticus (L.), mainly on motorised vessels representing the commercial fishers and dagaa, Rastrineobola argentea (Pellegrin), using both motorised and paddled vessels. The dominance of motorised fishing vessels depicted a consequence of the army operations and represents government priority to protect rather than regulate commercial fishing operations. Fishers mainly perceived regulations they knew about as effective, strongly opposed local governments as a management entity and assigned management to fisher groups as expected. The results support a management regime of key resource users organised by common interest groups to participate in decision‐making and combined government structures to regulate and enforce sustainable fisheries measures.
