Abstract

This book presents the proceedings of the international conference “The Middle Ages in the Modern World,” held in Rome November 21-24, 2018. Attended by more than a hundred participants of different ages, educational backgrounds, and places of origin, the conference constituted a landmark in the study of medievalism: the historical discipline, now in full bloom, that investigates the ways in which the thousand-year period between 500 and 1500 was, and continues to be, presented, reconstructed, and imagined in successive eras. The book opens with a substantial bibliography drawn from all of its components, followed by the seven keynote lectures and ninety-three shorter texts - abstracts of the individual conference papers - organized along eight thematic pathways, which together provide a vivid image of the current state of the field.

Abstract

Off-the shelf wireless communication technologies reduce infrastructure deployment costs and are thus attractive for distribution system control. Wireless communication however may lead to variable network performance. Hence the impact of this variability on overall distribution system control behavior needs to be analyzed within the full system context. This paper considers two prominent families of wireless communication technologies: cellular 2G to 4G systems and IEEE 802.11 WiFi. Selected results on network performance and its impact on two distribution system control use-cases are presented. The main focus is on the impact of varying cross-traffic levels, different deployment and propagation scenarios, as well as malicious attacks. A full communication protocols stack, ranging from bare socket interfaces to full-scale IEC61850 implementations with security features, is used within physical testbeds as well as model-based analysis.

6. Smart Grid Architectures:From Use Cases to ICT Requirements

Abstract

The scope of this paper is to address the evolution of distribution grid architectures following the widespread introduction of renewable energy sources. The increasing connection of distributed resources has a strong impact on the topology and the control functionality of the current distribution grids requiring the development of new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions with various degrees of adaptation of the monitoring, communication and control technologies. The costs of ICT based solutions need however to be taken into account, hence it is desirable to work with existing communication networks. The objective of the European FP7 project SmartC2Net in this regard is to enable robust smart grid control utilizing heterogeneous third party communication infrastructures.

9. Notes on Implementing a IEEE 802.11s Mesh Point.

Abstract

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are gaining wide popularity as a flexible and cost-effective access technology. Many vendors and network operators have already deployed their own proprietary solutions, and, in the meantime, the IEEE has set off Task Group 802.11s (TGs) to develop a common standard for WMNs. So far, however, TGs has not yet produced a final document and is still working on the draft. In this context, we have built a prototype mesh node as much compliant as possible with the (still unofficial) 802.11s draft. A software framework was developed using common off-the-shelf technology and deployed on top of the legacy 802.11 interface card. We believe that the availability of such a prototype will permit to readily test the features and the amendments to the draft as soon as they are proposed, thus returning immediate and significant feedbacks on their effectiveness. This is an important milestone, as simulation trials, though very useful, often do not give answers on the actual feasibility of the tested feature. And, in fact, the prototype already allowed us to experimentally evaluate the basic 802.11s characteristics, pointing out some shortcomings and suggesting possible improvements. 10. Interference-Aware Channel Assignment in Wireless Mesh Networks.

Abstract

The emerging IEEE 802.11-based Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) suffer of poor performance in terms of throughput. The use of multi-hop paths to relay the traffic raises the problems of intra-flow and inter-flow interference in the wireless backbone. A possible solution to this problem is exploiting a multi-channel framework. In this context, we develop an innovative interfere-ence model that permits to take into account the actual signal power received from each interference source, the interference produced by sources external to the WMN, the link utilization factor and directive antennas. Starting from this new model, we propose a channel assignment algorithm for multi-radio WMNs which is based on graph theory. Its performance is evaluated through simulations, which show a great improvement over existing channel assignment algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

SUMMARY This paper presents RA-WF2Q+, a radio-aware version of the well-known WF2Q+ scheduler, tailored for the downlink traffic of a WiMAX system. With respect to WF2Q+, the proposed scheduler introduces the number of slots in the downlink frame as a parameter of the sharing decision process. This solution permits taking into account the information on the radio channel quality experimented by each user and, at the same time, exploiting the well-known features of WF2Q+. The simulation study comparing the performance of the proposed scheduler with those of other well-known scheduling algorithms highlights some interesting characteristics of RA-WF2Q+. In particular, it permits achieving the highest overall system throughput while guaranteeing the requested quality of service for voice applications. Only when the radio resources become scarce with respect to the total offered traffic, RA-WF2Q+ displays its opportunistic nature, favouring the users nearest to the base station.
