In real-world traffic, there are various uncertainties and complexities in road and weather conditions. To solve the problem that the feature information of pole-like obstacles in complex environments is easily lost, resulting in low detection accuracy and low real-time performance, a multi-scale hybrid attention mechanism detection algorithm is proposed in this paper. First, the optimal transport function Monge-Kantorovich (MK) is incorporated not only to solve the problem of overlapping multiple prediction frames with optimal matching but also the MK function can be regularized to prevent model over-fitting; then, the features at different scales are up-sampled separately according to the optimized efficient multi-scale feature pyramid. Finally, the extraction of multi-scale feature space channel information is enhanced in complex environments based on the hybrid attention mechanism, which suppresses the irrelevant complex environment background information and focuses the feature information of pole-like obstacles. Meanwhile, this paper conducts real road test experiments in a variety of complex environments. The experimental results show that the detection precision, recall, and average precision of the method are 94.7%, 93.1%, and 97.4%, respectively, and the detection frame rate is 400 f/s. Single-photon cameras (SPCs) have emerged as a promising technology for high-resolution 3D imaging. A single-photon 3D camera determines the round-trip time of a laser pulse by capturing the arrival of individual photons at each camera pixel. Constructing photon-timestamp histograms is a fundamental operation for a single-photon 3D camera. However, in-pixel histogram processing is computationally expensive and requires large amount of memory per pixel. Digitizing and transferring photon timestamps to an off-sensor histogramming module is bandwidth and power hungry. Here we present an online approach for distance estimation without explicitly storing photon counts. The two key ingredients of our approach are (a) processing photon streams using race logic, which maintains photon data in the time-delay domain, and (b) constructing count-free equi-depth histograms. Equi-depth histograms are a succinct representation for ``peaky'' distributions, such as those obtained by an SPC pixel from a laser pulse reflected by a surface. Our approach uses a binner element that converges on the median (or, more generally, to another quantile) of a distribution. We cascade multiple binners to form an equi-depth histogrammer that produces multi-bin histograms. Our evaluation shows that this method can provide an order of magnitude reduction in bandwidth and power consumption while maintaining similar distance reconstruction accuracy as conventional processing methods., Accepted for presentation at the 2023 International Conference on Computational Photography

Image super-resolution research recently been dominated by transformer models which need higher computational resources than CNNs due to the quadratic complexity of self-attention. We propose a new neural network -- WaveMixSR -- for image super-resolution based on WaveMix architecture which uses a 2D-discrete wavelet transform for spatial token-mixing. Unlike transformer-based models, WaveMixSR does not unroll the image as a sequence of pixels/patches. It uses the inductive bias of convolutions along with the lossless token-mixing property of wavelet transform to achieve higher performance while requiring fewer resources and training data. We compare the performance of our network with other state-of-the-art methods for image super-resolution. Our experiments show that WaveMixSR achieves competitive performance in all datasets and reaches state-of-the-art performance in the BSD100 dataset on multiple super-resolution tasks. In this paper, we introduce FitMe, a facial reflectance model and a differentiable rendering optimization pipeline, that can be used to acquire high-fidelity renderable human avatars from single or multiple images. The model consists of a multi-modal style-based generator, that captures facial appearance in terms of diffuse and specular reflectance, and a PCA-based shape model. We employ a fast differentiable rendering process that can be used in an optimization pipeline, while also achieving photorealistic facial shading. Our optimization process accurately captures both the facial reflectance and shape in high-detail, by exploiting the expressivity of the style-based latent representation and of our shape model. FitMe achieves state-of-the-art reflectance acquisition and identity preservation on single "in-the-wild" facial images, while it produces impressive scan-like results, when given multiple unconstrained facial images pertaining to the same identity. The localization of objects is a crucial task in various applications such as robotics, virtual and augmented reality, and the transportation of goods in warehouses. Recent advances in deep learning have enabled the localization using monocular visual cameras. While structure from motion (SfM) predicts the absolute pose from a point cloud, absolute pose regression (APR) methods learn a semantic understanding of the environment through neural networks. However, both fields face challenges caused by the environment such as motion blur, lighting changes, repetitive patterns, and feature-less structures. This study aims to address these challenges by incorporating additional information and regularizing the absolute pose using relative pose regression (RPR) methods. RPR methods suffer under different challenges, i.e., motion blur. The optical flow between consecutive images is computed using the Lucas-Kanade algorithm, and the relative pose is predicted using an auxiliary small recurrent convolutional network. The fusion of absolute and relative poses is a complex task due to the mismatch between the global and local coordinate systems. State-of-the-art methods fusing absolute and relative poses use pose graph optimization (PGO) to regularize the absolute pose predictions using relative poses. In this work, we propose recurrent fusion networks to optimally align absolute and relative pose predictions to improve the absolute pose prediction. We evaluate eight different recurrent units and construct a simulation environment to pre-train the APR and RPR networks for better generalized training. Additionally, we record a large database of different scenarios in a challenging large-scale indoor environment that mimics a warehouse with transportation robots. We conduct hyperparameter searches and experiments to show the effectiveness of our recurrent fusion method compared to PGO.

Video stabilization plays a central role to improve videos quality. However, despite the substantial progress made by these methods, they were, mainly, tested under standard weather and lighting conditions, and may perform poorly under adverse conditions. In this paper, we propose a synthetic-aware adverse weather robust algorithm for video stabilization that does not require real data and can be trained only on synthetic data. We also present Silver, a novel rendering engine to generate the required training data with an automatic ground-truth extraction procedure. Our approach uses our specially generated synthetic data for training an affine transformation matrix estimator avoiding the feature extraction issues faced by current methods. Additionally, since no video stabilization datasets under adverse conditions are available, we propose the novel VSAC105Real dataset for evaluation. We compare our method to five state-of-the-art video stabilization algorithms using two benchmarks. Our results show that current approaches perform poorly in at least one weather condition, and that, even training in a small dataset with synthetic data only, we achieve the best performance in terms of stability average score, distortion score, success rate, and average cropping ratio when considering all weather conditions. Hence, our video stabilization model generalizes well on real-world videos and does not require large-scale synthetic training data to converge.

In this paper, we describe a method to capture nearly entirely spherical (360 degree) depth information using two adjacent frames from a single spherical video with motion parallax. After illustrating a spherical depth information retrieval using two spherical cameras, we demonstrate monocular spherical stereo by using stabilized first-person video footage. Experiments demonstrated that the depth information was retrieved on up to 97% of the entire sphere in solid angle. At a speed of 30 km/h, we were able to estimate the depth of an object located over 30 m from the camera. We also reconstructed the 3D structures (point cloud) using the obtained depth data and confirmed the structures can be clearly observed. We can apply this method to 3D structure retrieval of surrounding environments such as 1) previsualization, location hunting/planning of a film, 2) real scene/computer graphics synthesis and 3) motion capture. Thanks to its simplicity, this method can be applied to various videos. As there is no pre-condition other than to be a 360 video with motion parallax, we can use any 360 videos including those on the Internet to reconstruct the surrounding environments. While low-rank matrix prior has been exploited in dynamic MR image reconstruction and has obtained satisfying performance, tensor low-rank models have recently emerged as powerful alternative representations for three-dimensional dynamic MR datasets. In this paper, we introduce a novel deep unrolling network for dynamic MRI, namely the learned transform-based tensor low-rank network (LT$^2$LR-Net). First, we generalize the tensor singular value decomposition (t-SVD) into an arbitrary unitary transform-based version and subsequently propose the novel transformed tensor nuclear norm (TTNN). Then, we design a novel TTNN-based iterative optimization algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to exploit the tensor low-rank prior in the transformed domain. The corresponding iterative steps are unrolled into the proposed LT$^2$LR-Net, where the convolutional neural network (CNN) is incorporated to adaptively learn the transformation from the dynamic MR dataset for more robust and accurate tensor low-rank representations. Although certain vision transformer (ViT) and CNN architectures generalize well on vision tasks, it is often impractical to use them on green, edge, or desktop computing due to their computational requirements for training and even testing. We present WaveMix as an alternative neural architecture that uses a multi-scale 2D discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for spatial token mixing. Unlike ViTs, WaveMix neither unrolls the image nor requires self-attention of quadratic complexity. Additionally, DWT introduces another inductive bias -- besides convolutional filtering -- to utilize the 2D structure of an image to improve generalization. The multi-scale nature of the DWT also reduces the requirement for a deeper architecture compared to the CNNs, as the latter relies on pooling for partial spatial mixing. WaveMix models show generalization that is competitive with ViTs, CNNs, and token mixers on several datasets while requiring lower GPU RAM (training and testing), number of computations, and storage. Lichens, organisms resulting from a symbiosis between a fungus and an algae, are frequently used as age estimators, especially in recent geological deposits and archaeological structures, using the correlation between lichen size and age. Current non-automated manual lichen and measurement (with ruler, calipers or using digital image processing tools) is a time-consuming and laborious process, especially when the number of samples is high. This work presents a workflow and set of image acquisition and processing tools developed to efficiently identify lichen thalli in flat rocky surfaces, and to produce relevant lichen size statistics (percentage cover, number of thalli, their area and perimeter). The developed workflow uses a regular digital camera for image capture along with specially designed targets to allow for automatic image correction and scale assignment. After this step, lichen identification is done in a flow comprising assisted image segmentation and classification based on interactive foreground extraction tool (GrabCut) and automatic classification of images using Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC) for image segmentation and Support Vector Machines (SV) and Random Forest classifiers. Initial evaluation shows promising results. The manual classification of images (for training) using GrabCut show an average speedup of 4 if compared with currently used techniques and presents an average precision of 95\%. The automatic classification using SLIC and SVM with default parameters produces results with average precision higher than 70\%. The developed system is flexible and allows a considerable reduction of processing time, the workflow allows it applicability to data sets of new lichen populations.

Wildfires are uncontrolled fires in the environment that can be caused by humans or nature. In 2020 alone, wildfires in California have burned 4.2 million acres, damaged 10,500 buildings or structures, and killed more than 31 people, exacerbated by climate change and a rise in average global temperatures. This also means there has been an increase in the costs of extinguishing these treacherous wildfires. The objective of the research is to detect forest fires in their earlier stages to prevent them from spreading, prevent them from causing damage to a variety of things, and most importantly, reduce or eliminate the chances of someone dying from a wildfire. A fire detection system should be efficient and accurate with respect to extinguishing wildfires in their earlier stages to prevent the spread of them along with their consequences. Computer Vision is potentially a more reliable, fast, and widespread method we need. The current research in the field of preliminary fire detection has several problems related to unrepresentative data being used to train models and their existing varied amounts of label imbalance in the classes of their dataset. We propose a more representative and evenly distributed data through better settings, lighting, atmospheres, etc., and class distribution in the entire dataset. After thoroughly examining the results of this research, it can be inferred that they supported the datasets strengths by being a viable resource when tested in the real world on unfamiliar data. This is evident since as the model trains on the dataset, it is able to generalize on it, hence confirming this is a viable Machine Learning setting that has practical impact., 12 pages, 7 figures

We present three parallel-beam tomographic datasets of 94 apples with internal defects along with defect label files. The datasets are prepared for development and testing of data-driven, learning-based image reconstruction, segmentation and post-processing methods. The three versions are a noiseless simulation; simulation with added Gaussian noise, and with scattering noise. The datasets are based on real 3D X-ray CT data and their subsequent volume reconstructions. The ground truth images, based on the volume reconstructions, are also available through this project. Apples contain various defects, which naturally introduce a label bias. We tackle this by formulating the bias as an optimization problem. In addition, we demonstrate solving this problem with two methods: a simple heuristic algorithm and through mixed integer quadratic programming. This ensures the datasets can be split into test, training or validation subsets with the label bias eliminated. Therefore the datasets can be used for image reconstruction, segmentation, automatic defect detection, and testing the effects of (as well as applying new methodologies for removing) label bias in machine learning., Data Descriptor, to be submitted, 21 pages, 12 figures

We show that automated person detection under occlusion conditions can be significantly improved by combining multi-perspective images before classification. Here, we employed image integration by Airborne Optical Sectioning (AOS)---a synthetic aperture imaging technique that uses camera drones to capture unstructured thermal light fields---to achieve this with a precision/recall of 96/93%. Finding lost or injured people in dense forests is not generally feasible with thermal recordings, but becomes practical with use of AOS integral images. Our findings lay the foundation for effective future search and rescue technologies that can be applied in combination with autonomous or manned aircraft. Imaging depth and spectrum have been extensively studied in isolation from each other for decades. Recently, hyperspectral-depth (HS-D) imaging emerges to capture both information simultaneously by combining two different imaging systems; one for depth, the other for spectrum. While being accurate, this combinational approach induces increased form factor, cost, capture time, and alignment/registration problems. In this work, departing from the combinational principle, we propose a compact single-shot monocular HS-D imaging method. Our method uses a diffractive optical element (DOE), the point spread function of which changes with respect to both depth and spectrum. This enables us to reconstruct spectrum and depth from a single captured image. To this end, we develop a differentiable simulator and a neural-network-based reconstruction that are jointly optimized via automatic differentiation. To facilitate learning the DOE, we present a first HS-D dataset by building a benchtop HS-D imager that acquires high-quality ground truth. We evaluate our method with synthetic and real experiments by building an experimental prototype and achieve state-of-the-art HS-D imaging results.

International audience; This paper proposes to use the statistical analysis of the correlation between DCT coefficients to design a new synchronization strategy that can be used for cost-based steganographic schemes in the JPEG domain. First, an analysis is performed on the covariance matrix of DCT coefficients of neighboring blocks after a development pipeline similar to the one used to generate BossBase, and applied on a photonic noise. This analysis exhibits (i) a decomposition into 8 disjoint sets of uncorrelated coefficients (4 sets per block used by 2 disjoint lattices) and (ii) the fact that each DCT coefficient is correlated with 38 other coefficients belonging either to the same block or to connected blocks. Using the uncorrelated groups, an embedding scheme can be designed using only 8 disjoint lattices. The proposed embedding scheme relies on ingredients. Firstly, we convert the empirical costs associated to one each coefficient into a Gaussian distribution whose variance is directly computed from the embedding costs. Secondly we derive conditional Gaussian distributions from a multivariate distribution considering only the correlated coefficients which have been already modified by the embedding scheme. This covariance matrix takes into account both the correlations exhibited by the analysis of the covariance matrix and the variance derived from the costs. This synchronization scheme enables to obtain a gain of $P_E$ of at least $7\%$ at $QF95$ for an embedding rate close to 0.3 bnzac coefficient using DCTR feature sets for both UERD and JUniward.

In order to achieve high practical security, Natural Steganography (NS) uses cover images captured at ISO sensitivity $ISO_{1}$ and generates stego images mimicking ISO sensitivity $ISO_{2}>ISO_{1}$. This is achieved by adding a stego signal to the cover that mimics the sensor photonic noise. This paper proposes an embedding mechanism to perform NS in the JPEG domain after linear developments by explicitly computing the correlations between DCT coefficients before quantization. In order to compute the covariance matrix of the photonic noise in the DCT domain, we first develop the matrix representation of demosaicking, luminance averaging, pixel section, and 2D-DCT. A detailed analysis of the resulting covariance matrix is done in order to explain the origins of the correlations between the coefficients of $3\times3$ DCT blocks. An embedding scheme is then presented that takes in order to take into account all the correlations. It employs 4 sub-lattices and 64 lattices per sub-lattices. The modification probabilities of each DCT coefficient are then derived by computing conditional probabilities from the multivariate Gaussian distribution using the Cholesky decomposition of the covariance matrix. This derivation is also used to compute the embedding capacity of each image. Using a specific database called E1 Base, we show that in the JPEG domain NS (J-Cov-NS) enables to achieve high capacity (more than 2 bits per non-zero AC DCT) and with high practical security ($P_{\mathrm{E}}\simeq40\%$ using DCTR from QF 75 to QF 100)., 13 pages, 14 figures

Quaternion singular value decomposition (QSVD) is a robust technique of digital watermarking which can extract high quality watermarks from watermarked images with low distortion. In this paper, QSVD technique is further investigated and an efficient robust watermarking scheme is proposed. The improved algebraic structure-preserving method is proposed to handle the problem of "explosion of complexity" occurred in the conventional QSVD design. Secret information is transmitted blindly by incorporating in QSVD two new strategies, namely, coefficient pair selection and adaptive embedding. Unlike conventional QSVD which embeds watermarks in a single imaginary unit, we propose to adaptively embed the watermark into the optimal hiding position using the Normalized Cross-Correlation (NC) method. This avoids the selection of coefficient pair with less correlation, and thus, it reduces embedding impact by decreasing the maximum modification of coefficient values. In this way, compared with conventional QSVD, the proposed watermarking strategy avoids more modifications to a single color image layer and a better visual quality of the watermarked image is observed. Meanwhile, adaptive QSVD resists some common geometric attacks, and it improves the robustness of conventional QSVD. With these improvements, our method outperforms conventional QSVD. Thin fiber networks are widely represented in nature and can be found in man-made materials such as paper and packaging. The strength of such materials is an intricate subject due to inherited randomness and size-dependencies. Direct fiber-level numerical simulations can provide insights into the role of the constitutive components of such networks, their morphology, and arrangements on the strength of the products made of them. However, direct mechanical simulation of randomly generated large and thin fiber networks is characterized by overwhelming computational costs. Herein, a stochastic constitutive model for predicting the random mechanical response of isotropic thin fiber networks of arbitrary size is presented. The model is based on stochastic volume elements (SVEs) with SVE size-specific deterministic and stochastic constitutive law parameters. The randomness in the network is described by the spatial fields of the uniaxial strain and strength to failure, formulated using multivariate kernel functions and approximate univariate probability density functions. The proposed stochastic continuum approach shows good agreement when compared to direct numerical simulation with respect to mechanical response. Furthermore, strain localization patterns matched the one observed in direct simulations, which suggests an accurate prediction of the failure location. Sensor setups consisting of a combination of 3D range scanner lasers and stereo vision systems are becoming a popular choice for on-board perception systems in vehicles; however, the combined use of both sources of information implies a tedious calibration process. We present a method for extrinsic calibration of lidar-stereo camera pairs without user intervention. Our calibration approach is aimed to cope with the constraints commonly found in automotive setups, such as low-resolution and specific sensor poses. To demonstrate the performance of our method, we also introduce a novel approach for the quantitative assessment of the calibration results, based on a simulation environment. Tests using real devices have been conducted as well, proving the usability of the system and the improvement over the existing approaches. An inverse problem in spectroscopy is considered. The objective is to restore the discrete spectrum from observed spectrum data, taking into account the spectrometer's line spread function. The problem is reduced to solution of a system of linear-nonlinear equations (SLNE) with respect to intensities and frequencies of the discrete spectral lines. The SLNE is linear with respect to lines' intensities and nonlinear with respect to the lines' frequencies. The integral approximation algorithm is proposed for the solution of this SLNE. The algorithm combines solution of linear integral equations with solution of a system of linear algebraic equations and avoids nonlinear equations. Numerical examples of the application of the technique, both to synthetic and experimental spectra, demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach in enabling an effective enhancement of the spectrometer's resolution., submitted to Applied Spectroscopy Journal

We consider the problem of digitalizing Euclidean line segments from $\mathbb{R}^d$ to $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Christ {\em et al.} (DCG, 2012) showed how to construct a set of {\em consistent digital segment} (CDS) for $d=2$: a collection of segments connecting any two points in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ that satisfies the natural extension of the Euclidean axioms to $\mathbb{Z}^d$. In this paper we study the construction of CDSs in higher dimensions. We show that any total order can be used to create a set of {\em consistent digital rays} CDR in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ (a set of rays emanating from a fixed point $p$ that satisfies the extension of the Euclidean axioms). We fully characterize for which total orders the construction holds and study their Hausdorff distance, which in particular positively answers the question posed by Christ {\em et al.}.

It is not obvious how to extend Shannon's original information entropy to higher dimensions, and many different approaches have been tried. We replace the English text symbol sequence originally used to illustrate the theory by a discrete, bandlimited signal. Using Shannon's later theory of sampling we derive a new and symmetric version of the second order entropy in 1D. The new theory then naturally extends to 2D and higher dimensions, where by naturally we mean simple, symmetric, isotropic and parsimonious. Simplicity arises from the direct application of Shannon's joint entropy equalities and inequalities to the gradient (del) vector field image embodying the second order relations of the scalar image. Parsimony is guaranteed by halving of the vector data rate using Papoulis' generalized sampling expansion. The new 2D entropy measure, which we dub delentropy, is underpinned by a computable probability density function we call deldensity. The deldensity captures the underlying spatial image structure and pixel co-occurrence. It achieves this because each scalar image pixel value is nonlocally related to the entire gradient vector field. Both deldensity and delentropy are highly tractable and yield many interesting connections and useful inequalities. The new measure explicitly defines a realizable encoding algorithm and a corresponding reconstruction. Initial tests show that delentropy compares favourably with the conventional intensity-based histogram entropy and the compressed data rates of lossless image encoders (GIF, PNG, WEBP, JP2K-LS and JPG-LS) for a selection of images. The topic of this paper is a novel Bayesian continuous-basis field representation and inference framework. Within this paper several problems are solved: The maximally informative inference of continuous-basis fields, that is where the basis for the field is itself a continuous object and not representable in a finite manner, the tradeoff between accuracy of representation in terms of information learned, and memory or storage capacity in bits, the approximation of probability distributions so that a maximal amount of information about the object being inferred is preserved, an information theoretic justification for multigrid methodology. The maximally informative field inference framework is described in full generality and denoted the Generalized Kalman Filter. The Generalized Kalman Filter allows the update of field knowledge from previous knowledge at any scale, and new data, to new knowledge at any other scale. An application example instance, the inference of continuous surfaces from measurements (for example, camera image data), is presented.

International audience; Mobile phone camera-based document video scan- ning is an interesting research problem which has entered into a new era with the emergence of widely used, processing capable and motion sensors equipped smartphones. We present our ongoing research on mobile phone camera-based document image mosaic reconstruction method for video scanning of paper documents. In this work, we have optimized the classic keypoint feature descriptor based image registration method, by employing the accelerometer and gyroscope sensor data. Experimental results are evaluated using optical character recognition (OCR) on the reconstructed mosaic from mobile phone camera-based video scanning of paper documents.

A line of a bilingual document page may contain text words in regional language and numerals in English. For Optical Character Recognition (OCR) of such a document page, it is necessary to identify different script forms before running an individual OCR system. In this paper, we have identified a tool of morphological opening by reconstruction of an image in different directions and regional descriptors for script identification at word level, based on the observation that every text has a distinct visual appearance. The proposed system is developed for three Indian major bilingual documents, Kannada, Telugu and Devnagari containing English numerals. The nearest neighbour and k-nearest neighbour algorithms are applied to classify new word images. The proposed algorithm is tested on 2625 words with various font styles and sizes. Completing Aronov et al.'s study on zero-discrepancy matrices for digital halftoning, we determine all (m, n, k, l) for which it is possible to put mn consecutive integers on an m-by-n board (with wrap-around) so that each k-by-l region holds the same sum. This paper proposes a parallel approach for the Vector Quantization (VQ) problem in image processing. VQ deals with codebook generation from the input training data set and replacement of any arbitrary data with the nearest codevector. Most of the efforts in VQ have been directed towards designing parallel search algorithms for the codebook, and little has hitherto been done in evolving a parallelized procedure to obtain an optimum codebook. This parallel algorithm addresses the problem of designing an optimum codebook using the traditional LBG type of vector quantization algorithm for shared memory systems and for the efficient usage of parallel processors. Using the codebook formed from a training set, any arbitrary input data is replaced with the nearest codevector from the codebook. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is indicated., 14 pages

The commonly used radial distortion model for camera calibration is in fact an assumption or a restriction. In practice, camera distortion could happen in a general geometrical manner that is not limited to the radial sense. This paper proposes a simplified geometrical distortion modeling method by using two different radial distortion functions in the two image axes. A family of simplified geometric distortion models is proposed, which are either simple polynomials or the rational functions of polynomials. Analytical geometric undistortion is possible using two of the distortion functions discussed in this paper and their performance can be improved by applying a piecewise fitting idea. Our experimental results show that the geometrical distortion models always perform better than their radial distortion counterparts. The common approach to radial distortion is by the means of polynomial approximation, which introduces distortion-specific parameters into the camera model and requires estimation of these distortion parameters. The task of estimating radial distortion is to find a radial distortion model that allows easy undistortion as well as satisfactory accuracy. This paper presents a new piecewise radial distortion model with easy analytical undistortion formula. The motivation for seeking a piecewise radial distortion model is that, when a camera is resulted in a low quality during manufacturing, the nonlinear radial distortion can be complex. Using low order polynomials to approximate the radial distortion might not be precise enough. On the other hand, higher order polynomials suffer from the inverse problem. With the new piecewise radial distortion function, more flexibility is obtained and the radial undistortion can be performed analytically. Experimental results are presented to show that with this new piecewise radial distortion model, better performance is achieved than that using the single function.
