Abstract

An efficient current drive scheme in central or off-axis region is required for the steady state operation of tokamak fusion reactors. The current drive by using the fast wave in frequency range higher than two times lower hybrid resonance (w>2wlh) could be such a scheme in high density, high temperature reactor-grade tokamak plasmas. First, it has relatively higher parallel electric field to the magnetic field favorable to the current generation, compared to fast waves in other frequency range. Second, it can deeply penetrate into high density plasmas compared to the slow wave in the same frequency range. Abstract

Revision repair of retorn partial articular supraspinatus tendon avulsion (PASTA) lesion is difficult for poor tendon quality without tear completion and repair. Trans-tendon suture bridge repair with biceps tendon augmentation can preserve the intact bursal side cuff attachment and has shown satisfactory clinical outcomes. Moreover, trans-tendon suture bridge rotator cuff repair technique, along with biceps tendon augmentation, reinforces high-grade PASTA lesions by moving the tenotomized biceps tendon into the torn articular side cuff defect with added advantage of blood supply through the tenotomized biceps tendon graft. Retear after trans-tendon repair of high-grade PASTA lesions was rare, and its poor tendon quality cause the revision repair to be too difficult. Without tear completion and rotator cuff repair, this arthroscopic trans-tendon suture bridge rotator cuff repair with biceps tendon augmentation is a reliable procedure that could be expected to produce improved short-term functional and radiologic outcomes, along with improved tendon quality of repaired tendon.

25. Whey Peptide Alleviates Muscle Atrophy by Strongly Regulating Myocyte Differentiation in Mice

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Muscle atrophy occurs when protein degradation exceeds protein synthesis, resulting in imbalanced protein homeostasis, compromised muscle contraction, and a reduction in muscle mass. The incidence of muscle atrophy is increasingly recognized as a significant worldwide public health problem. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of whey peptide (WP) on muscle atrophy induced by dexamethasone (DEX) in mice. Materials and Methods: C57BL/6 mice were divided into six groups, each consisting of nine individuals. WPs were orally administered to C57BL/6 mice for 6 weeks. DEX was administered for 5–6 weeks to induce muscle atrophy (intraperitoneal injection, i.p.). Results: Microcomputer tomography (CT) analysis confirmed that WP significantly increased calf muscle volume and surface area in mice with DEX-induced muscle atrophy, as evidenced by tissue staining. Furthermore, it increased the area of muscle fibers and facilitated greater collagen deposition. Moreover, WP significantly decreased the levels of serum biomarkers associated with muscle damage, kidney function, and inflammatory cytokines. WP increased p-mTOR and p-p70S6K levels through the IGF-1/PI3K/Akt pathway, while concurrently decreasing protein catabolism via the FOXO pathway. Furthermore, the expression of proteins associated with myocyte differentiation increased noticeably. Conclusions: These results confirm that WP reduces muscle atrophy by regulating muscle protein homeostasis. Additionally, it is believed that it helps to relieve muscle atrophy by regulating the expression of myocyte differentiation factors. Therefore, we propose that WP plays a significant role in preventing and treating muscle wasting by functioning as a supplement to counteract muscle atrophy.

34. The Interaction Effects of Board Independence and Digital Transformation on Environmental, Social, and Governance Performance: Complementary or Substitutive?

Abstract

Both board independence (BI) and digital transformation (DT) play important roles in promoting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance. However, few studies have focused on their interaction effects on ESG performance (ESGP). The study selected Chinese A-share listed companies from 2013 to 2023 as the research sample and used a moderating effect model to test the complementary or substitutive relationship between the two. The empirical results show that there is a substitutive effect, rather than a complementary one. Further analysis of the individual ESG pillars revealed that the substitutive effect of BI and DT is primarily reflected in corporate governance. Moreover, this substitutive effect is more pronounced in state-owned enterprises and non-manufacturing enterprises, and digital supervision mechanisms may have a stronger substitutive role than traditional independent director oversight mechanisms. These findings uncover the complex relationship between the two governance mechanisms and corporate ESGP, offering important insights for managers; companies need to strike a balance between "human governance" and "digital governance" to maximize ESGP. 35. Design principles of energy absorbing structures subjected to combined shear-compression loading.

Abstract

To maintain the robustness of crashworthiness performance in energy absorbing structures, high specific energy absorption (SEA) and crush force efficiency (CFE) need to be maintained across a wide range of load angles. In this paper, concave design was proposed to address this issue. Finite element analysis was utilised to identify the main load-bearing elements for axial and shear loading. Furthermore, the design concepts were classified into surface variation and cross-section variation. Pattern design, which is a representative design of surface variation, can enhance crashworthiness performance by reducing the initial crushing load and maximising the development of a travelling hinge. However, there is a drawback that designing the cross-section to maximise the development of the travelling hinge leads to an increase in the dihedral angle, resulting in a decrease in the CFE. This paper proposed the concave design, that ensures excellent robustness of crashworthiness performance and minimised the trade-off between SEA and CFE performance under combined shear-compression loading. The design induces local crushing due to geometric imperfections, which reduces the peak load while maintaining the high load-bearing capacity, thereby increasing SEA. Furthermore, the surface of the energy absorbing structure is an important load-bearing component that supports shear loads, and the concave design induces progressive crushing modes for any load angle, thereby maximising the deformation of the surface and improving SEA. Abstract

In this paper, the energy absorption performance of braided composite tubes under combined shear-compression loading is investigated. ABAQUS/Explicit is employed to analyze the energy absorption of braided composite tubes, and quasi-static compression tests are carried out. Braided composite materials absorb energy through the damage accumulation in laminate. Thus, to maximize energy absorption performance, a progressive crushing mode should be induced. While extensive research has been conducted on cases of axial loading, understanding of the energy absorption performance of braided composite tubes under combined shear-compression loading remains limited. Experimental results reveal that under both axial and combined shear-compression loading at 30 degrees, the braided composite tube exhibits a progressive crushing mode. The test results are utilized to validate the finite element model. Through finite element analysis, it is confirmed that the damage accumulation in laminate is maximized due to the induction of a progressive crushing mode. It means that the energy absorption principles of braided composites apply similarly to combined shear-compression loading, allowing for the maintenance of superior energy absorption performance of braided composites under various load angles. Abstract

A diagnostic system for measuring the effective charge in the versatile experiment spherical torus (VEST) has been developed. The system utilizes a toroidal array to observe the plasma radius on the low magnetic field side, providing a spatially resolved Zeff. The target wavelength of visible bremsstrahlung (VB) was carefully selected to avoid contamination by line emissions. The detector signal was calibrated using a halogen light source and an integrating sphere to obtain an absolute value of the radiative power from each chord. The local emissivity profile was reconstructed from the line-integrated VB emission using the Abel inversion method. Reconstruction tests were performed on various shapes of phantom profiles to effectively reconstruct the local emissivity from the measurements. We found that the initial measurements of the multi-channel VB system were consistent with the results of other independent measurements, supporting the validity of the new measurements. Abstract

Global attention to climate change has surged since the advent of the Paris Agreement, intensifying the importance of measuring and managing carbon productivity indicators on a national level. Nevertheless, concerns persist regarding the reliability of such measurements because of inherent discrepancies in implementing and operating national-level carbon productivity indicators, coupled with their inherent uncertainty. This study proposes a multiple regression model to address these issues aimed at refining national-level carbon productivity indicator metrics, accounting for factors such as the gross domestic product and total greenhouse gas emissions by sectors. The objective was to offer insights into enhancing and effectively utilizing current indicators, enabling a more nuanced interpretation of the variation in the carbon productivity indicators across diverse industrial landscapes. This study showed that adjustments of the carbon productivity metrics reflect disparities in emissions across industrial structures, with countries characterized by high emissions from non-service industries showing improving trends. In addition, this paper proposes an auxiliary indicator estimating method for carbon productivity that, when utilized with current methodologies, is more usable to interpret productivity indicators within the context of varying industrial compositions across OECD countries. Moreover, by elucidating the nuances of industrial structures, this study advocates for more sophisticated approaches to interpreting and managing the productivity indicators tailored to the unique economic landscape of each country. Abstract

Acute bronchitis is the most common respiratory disease. Mixture of Ivy Leaf Extract and Coptidis rhizome syrup has shown good treatment efficacy against chronic bronchitis and acute respiratory infections. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Mixture of Ivy Leaf Extract and Coptidis rhizome compared with those of Pelargonium sidoides extract, for the treatment of acute bronchitis. We performed a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, active-controlled, parallel phase III study in 220 patients with acute bronchitis. The participants were offered either Mixture of Ivy Leaf Extract and Coptidis rhizome syrup (AGS) and placebo of P. sidoides tablet or placebo syrup and active tablet of P. sidoides (AGU) for 7 days. The primary endpoint was the change in the Bronchitis Severity Score (BSS) from the baseline visit (visit 2) to day 7 (visit 3). For the primary outcome, there was no significant difference in the change of total BSS between visits 2 and 3 (−4.10 ± 1.93 vs. −4.24 ± 1.85, p = 0.5125), and since the upper limit of the confidence interval (1.00) was smaller than the predetermined non-inferiority margin (1.17), it was confirmed that the AGS group was non-inferior to the AGU group. The changes in each symptom in the BSS between visits 2 and 3 also showed no significant differences. The overall improvement rate measured by the investigator (91.7 vs. 89.7%; p = 0.3506) and the satisfaction rate of the participants at visit 3 also showed no significant differences (97.2 vs. 94.4%; p = 0.4388). Regarding safety issues, adverse reactions were noted in both groups similarly, with no serious adverse events (4.55 vs. 3.64%, p > 0.999). Abstract

Introduction: The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Assessment Test (CAT) score is widely used for evaluating the health status of patients diagnosed with COPD. The aim of this study was to identify which components of the CAT are associated with exacerbations in severe COPD patients. Methods: Using data from the Korean COPD Subgroup Study (KOCOSS), we identified 3,440 COPD patients, among which 1,027 patients are classified as having severe COPD based on spirometry results. The CAT scores on 8 items were evaluated and classified into respiratory and non-respiratory categories. We analyzed the association between CAT item scores and moderate-to-severe exacerbations during study enrollment and the following years. Results: Patients with a history of moderate-to-severe exacerbations had higher scores on non-respiratory CAT components. Longitudinal CAT scores on all items after enrollment were higher in the moderate-to-severe exacerbation group. Additionally, the frequency of severe exacerbations was associated with specific CAT components related to limited activities, confidence leaving home, sleeplessness, and energy. Conclusions: This study revealed that the non-respiratory CAT component scores were statistically significant factors for predicting the moderate-to-severe exacerbation of severe COPD patients. Non-respiratory symptoms and functional limitations should be considered in patients with severe COPD. Interventions, such as pulmonary rehabilitation, may be needed to improve patients' overall well-being and prevent exacerbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
