Abstract

Data science’s rapid development in a dynamically growing data environment endows it with unique characteristics among scientific disciplines, juxtaposing challenges typically encountered in theoretical as well as empirical sciences. This raises questions as to the identification of the most pressing problems for data science, as well as to what constitutes its theoretical foundations. In this contribution, we first describe data science from the perspective of philosophy of science. We argue that the current mode of development of data science is adequately described by what we term the differentiational-expansionist mode. This leads us to conclude that data science concerns the acquisition of scientific theories relating to the application of methods, workflows and algorithms that generate value for users – which we term the integrative view. This definition emphasizes the interdependent nature of human and algorithmic elements in complex data workflows. We then offer four challenges for the future of the field. We conclude that since full control of entire data workflows is unfeasible, attention should be redirected towards the creation of an infrastructure by which data workflows will self-organize in a useful manner.

Abstract

Purpose: Discordance between pre-operative biopsy and final pathology for Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma (UTUC) is high and optimal management remains controversial. The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of pre-operative biopsy, to identify prognostic factors and to evaluate the effect of adjuvant chemotherapy on survival and oncologic outcome in UTUC. Methods: We analyzed records of patients receiving surgical treatment for UTUC. Pathology of pre-operative biopsy was compared to surgical specimen. We used Kaplan-Meier method to estimate survival probabilities and Cox's proportional hazards models to estimate the association between covariates and event times. Primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). A matched-pair analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of adjuvant chemotherapy. Results: 151 patients underwent surgical treatment (28% open, 36% laparoscopic, 17% robotic radical nephroureterectomy; 14% segmental ureteral resections and 5% palliative nephrectomy) for UTUC and were included in the analysis. 42. Positive Predictive Factors for Urogenital Injuries in Severely Injured Patients with Pelvic and Spinal Fractures: Introducing the UPPS Scoring System.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Although urogenital injuries are common in severely injured patients, their diagnosis is often delayed. Predicting genitourinary injuries (GUI), especially in the immediate stages post injury, remains a challenge. This study aims to evaluate and determine positive predictive factors for the presence of GUI in polytrauma patients. Subsequently, these factors shall be used to develop an easy-to-use scoring system, deployable directly in the emergency setting. Materials and Methods: This study evaluates all severely injured patients with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) ≥ 16 admitted to the emergency departments of two German university hospitals between 2016 and 2020. These patients were retrospectively scanned for injuries of the thoracic and/or lumbar spine and/or the pelvic girdle. Demographic data was analyzed alongside trauma mechanism, type of injuries, mortality, length of hospital stays, surgeries, laboratory results, and urological treatment. Subgroup analysis was performed to compare patients with and without GUIs using t-tests. Conducting a binary logistic regression model, the significant factors were combined to create a scoring system, which was further analyzed for accuracy. Results: In total, 413 patients with an average ISS of 33.8 ± 15.0 were identified, and 47 patients (11.4%) sustained urogenital injuries with an average Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) score of 2.3 ± 1.1 (range: 1–5). The severity of the pelvic girdle injury correlated with the presence of urogenital injuries (p = 0.002), while there was no correlation with spinal injuries. Moreover, most GUIs resulted from motorcycle accidents (p < 0.001) and 87.2% of these patients were male. Patients with GUI were significantly more likely to show macrohematuria (p < 0.001) on admission and were more severely injured overall (ISS > 34). There was no significant difference in the length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, the days until discharge, or death rates. Conclusions: Factors or circumstances which reliably predict the presence of GUI were found to include the male sex, a motorcycle accident, high severity of pelvic girdle fractures, macrohematuria on admission to the emergency department, and an ISS > 34. With these findings, we introduce the 'Urotrauma in Polytrauma patients with Pelvic and/or Spinal injuries' (UPPS) score for easier prediction of GUI in the emergency setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Sweet, grain, and dual-purpose sorghums differ in a number of important traits, including biomass production, total solutes in the stem juice, and sugar accumulation across the stem. Ten dual-purpose hybrids, two sweet genotypes, and two grain landraces of sorghums were characterized under temperate environmental conditions to determine their potential for bioethanol production. Five sorghum hybrids (Ganymed, Hannibal, Tarzan, Merlin, and Zerberus) performed better with respect to cane yield, juice yield, potential sugar, and ethanol yields compared to sweet and grain genotypes. While the sweet genotype KIT1 produced the highest sugar concentration in the stem, the lowest concentration was produced by the grain landrace Razinieh. The study showed that plant height, leaf number, leaf weight, cane yield, and juice yield were positively correlated with the sugar yield in fresh stalk. Sugar accumulation was higher in the central internodes of all genotypes. Clustering analysis showed that sweet genotypes are located more closely to dual-purpose hybrids than grain landraces. We discuss the results with respect to the potential of dual-purpose sorghum hybrids for bio-economy in Germany.
