Research on temporary agency work emphasizes that temporary agency workers (TAWs), particularly those in low-skilled jobs associated with precariousness and low social prestige, are likely to be exposed to poor treatment, as well as stigmatization. On the contrary, stigmatization of TAWs in high-skilled jobs has not been treated in much detail in previous studies. Literature provides an incomplete picture of stigmatization within the broader field of temporary employment regarding the focus on low-skilled jobs. Hence, the present qualitative study is based on data from interviews of a heterogeneous sample of TAWs employed in low- and high-skilled jobs in Germany. By using and modifying Boyce and colleagues’ (2007) model of stigmatization, the study shows that stigmatizing treatment towards TAWs occurs across all skill levels, although the intensity and form of those experiences, as well as coping strategies, differ. Thereby, this study contributes to a more differentiated and skill level-specific understanding of how TAWs perceive and cope with stigmatization linked to their employment status. It also provides an important opportunity to advance Boyce and colleagues’ (2007) complex model of TAW stigmatization with empirical underpinnings.

Objetivo Investigar de manera retrospectiva a 5 anos el porcentaje de mortalidad en los pacientes operados de amputacion mayor por pie diabetico e identificar los factores de riesgo asociados que aumentan la mortalidad en la poblacion mexicana. Metodo Estudio retrospectivo de pacientes sometidos a amputacion mayor por pie diabetico del 1 de enero al 31 de diciembre de 2009 en un hospital de segundo nivel. Resultados Se incluyeron en el protocolo de estudio 37 pacientes que cumplian los criterios de inclusion, y se encontro que 10 (27.03%) continuaban con vida y 27 (72.97%) habian fallecido. Los pacientes a quienes se realizo una amputacion y tenian tres o mas enfermedades concomitantes mostraron un riesgo 1.6 veces mas alto de morir (p = 0.018). Cuanto mayor era la glucemia previa al momento de la amputacion, mayor fue la probabilidad de muerte a 5 anos (p = 0.015). Conclusiones En Mexico hacen falta estudios con seguimiento prospectivo, de caracter multicentrico, con una muestra heterogenea, que permitan tener un panorama nacional. Objective To investigate retrospectively at 5 years the mortality rate in postoperative patients of major amputation secondary to diabetic foot and to identify the associated risk factors that increase mortality in the Mexican population. Method Retrospective study that included patients who underwent major amputation secondary to diabetic foot from January 1 to December 31, 2009 in a second-level hospital. Results 37 patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study protocol, finding that 10 patients (27.03%) were still alive and 27 patients (72.97%) had died. Observing In patients who undergo an amputation and have three or more comorbidities, they have a 1.6 times higher risk of dying (p = 0.018) and that the higher the glycemia prior to the amputation, the greater the probability of dying at 5 years (p = 0.015). Conclusions Studies are needed in Mexico with prospective follow-up, multicenter in nature, with a heterogeneous sample, which allows us to have a National panorama.

Background Examine whether the use of different ages has an impact on the valuation of EQ-5D-Y health states for a hypothetical child or adolescent. Methods A survey was administered during regular classes among a convenience sample of university students in the Netherlands. Respondents first valued 6 EQ-5D-Y health states (2 mild, 2 moderate, 2 severe) describing a hypothetical child/adolescent of a certain age on a visual analogue scale (VAS). After 1 h respondents valued the same six health states again but this time the age of the child was different. Age differed between 4, 10 and 16 year old. Results Number of respondents was 311. No significant differences in valuation of the six health states were found between the age of 10 and 16. One moderate health state was valued significantly better for a 4-year old compared to a 10 and a 16 year old. The same applied for one severe health state that was valued higher for a 4-year old compared to a 16-year old. Conclusion Our study shows that, except for one moderate and one severe health state, other EQ-5D-Y health states were not valued significantly different when description of age differed. It is possible that problems in specific health domains are considered more severe for older children/adolescents compared to younger children who might still be dependent on their caregivers. Future research should examine whether our findings are also present in a broader set of EQ-5D-Y health states, with a choice-based method like TTO or DCE, and a more heterogeneous sample.

Socioemotional competence and peers’ social experiences have a mutually affecting relationship. Exploring students’ reasons for disliking a classmate within the classroom context has theoretical importance for peer interaction literature and practical importance for assisting teachers in building positive social environments. The goal of the study was to evaluate a system of categorization of reasons for disliking a classmate. For that, and in line with grounded theory, an enlarged heterogeneous sample of fourth and sixth grade Spanish and Portuguese students was used. Data collection was done through a sociometric task followed by a semi-structured interview (Spanish students) or by completing a questionnaire (Portuguese students). 1596 reasons provided by the Spanish students and 638 provide by the Portuguese students were analysed following the grounded theory procedure. Results showed that students tended to mention the same type of reasons; differences within groups relate to reasons’ salience. Implications are drawn for teaching practice and for exploring the effect of culture and school organization on students’ appreciation of each other.

Background: ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is on the rise in sub-Saharan Africa. South Africa consistently fails to deliver timely reperfusion to these patients, possibly due to under-developed coronary care networks (CCN). Objectives: To determine the current perceived state of CCNs, to determine the barriers to optimising CCNs and to suggest facilitators to optimising CCNs within the South African context. Methods: A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, by performing two structured in-depth and two focus group inter- views (n=4 and 5, respectively), inviting a purposely heterogeneous sample of 11 paramedics (n=4), doctors (n=5), and nurses (n=2) working within different settings in South African CCNs. Recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and subjected to content analysis. Results: Participants described an under-resourced, unprioritised and fragmented CCN with significant variation in perfor- mance. Barriers to CCN optimisation resided in recognition and diagnosis of STEMI, transport and treatment decisions, and delays. Participants suggested that thrombolysing all STEMI patients could facilitate earlier reperfusion and that pre-hospital thrombolysis should be considered. Participants highlighted the need for regionalised STEMI guidelines, and the need for fur- ther research. Conclusion: Numerous barriers were highlighted. Healthcare policy-makers should prioritise the development of CCNs that is underpinned by evidence and that is contextualised to each specific region within the South African health care system. This paper aims to explore the local innovation system's network structure in mature industries and in an emerging economy, by taking empirical evidence from the transport and logistics innovation system in the Campania region (South of Italy). The social network analysis conducted on R&D alliances among a heterogeneous sample of organisations revealed that the Campania LIS in transport and logistics is characterised by a closed network, where brokering positions are mostly undertaken by academic institutions, which is in line with the studies arguing that a closure structure better sustains the conduct of innovation activities.

Purpose To evaluate the correspondence of directly reported and recalled health-related quality of life (HRQL) in a heterogeneous sample of trauma patients. Methods Adult trauma patients who attended the Emergency Department and were admitted between 03/2016 and 11/2016 were invited to participate. Postal surveys were sent 1 week (T1), 3 months (T2), and 12 months (T3) post-trauma. The EQ-5D-3L and Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS) were used to assess directly reported and recalled HRQL. El instrumento Orthognathic Quality Of Life Questionnaire ( OQLQ) permite realizar una evaluacion subjetiva amplia y del nivel de calidad de vida pre y postquirurgica, por lo que es necesario realizar el proceso de traduccion al espanol y la adaptacion cultural al contexto colombiano. Metodos. Posterior a la autorizacion del autor original se realizaron traducciones directas, obtencion de una version preliminar, traducciones inversas y una prueba piloto con 15 pacientes colombianos, mayores de 16 anos, con anomalia dentofacial que asistieron al hospital de San Jose. Se aplico la metodologia del grupo de calidad de la European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) para garantizar que la version en espanol de la escala sea equivalente conceptualmente a la original. Resultados. Las traducciones directas fueron consistentes, sin embargo, se hicieron ajustes para obtener la version preliminar; las traducciones inversas fueron similares a la version original de la escala. La prueba piloto, realizada en una muestra heterogenea de 15 pacientes, llevo al ajuste de la sintaxis de un item. EnglishIntroduction: Orthognathic surgery is a therapeutic option that seeks parameters of symmetry, masticatory function, breathing, and improves the emotional state of patients with dentofacial anomalies. The questionnaire Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) allows to make a subjective evaluation and the leve! of quality of life before and after surgery, so it is necessary to perform the translation into Spanish and the cultural adaptation to the Co!ombian context. Methods: After the authorization of the original author, direct translations were made obtaining a preliminary version, reverse translations and a pilot test was accomplished with 15 Colombian patients over 16 years of age with a dentofacial anomaly who attended the San Jose hospital in Bogota. The methodology of the quality group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) was applied to ensure that the Spanish version of the scale is conceptually equivalent to the original. Results: The direct translations were consistent, however, adjustments were made to obtain the preliminary version; the inverse translations were similar to the original version of the scale. The pilot test, carried out on a heterogeneous sample of 15 patients led to the adjustment of the syntax of one item. In this way, the Spanish version of the questionnaire was obtained. Conclusion: The realization of this study allowed the adaptation of an understandable questionnaire in the Colombian context, guaranteeing a linguistic and conceptual equivalence between this version and the original version.

Using a two-wave survey design, we examine the relationship between job characteristics, untapped potential, and work meaningfulness in a heterogeneous sample of 542 employees. We found that employees’ perceived amount of untapped potential mediates the effects of skill variety, autonomy, and job feedback on work meaningfulness. This mediated relationship was moderated by the valence employees attributed to their untapped potential. Moreover, decreases in the perceived amount of untapped potential over time were related to increases in perceived work meaningfulness. Our research shows that work that allows employees to move beyond the here-and-now by providing opportunities to realize future work selves is experienced as particularly meaningful. ObjectiveAccording to the precaution adoption process model, cervical screening nonparticipants represent a heterogeneous group including those who are unaware of, unengaged with, or undecided about screening, as well as intenders and decliners. We aimed to explore beliefs about cervical screening among these different types of nonparticipant.MethodsSemistructured interviews were carried out with women aged 26 to 65 years living in Britain (n = 29). Women were purposively sampled to represent different nonparticipant types. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, and data were analysed thematically using framework analysis.ResultsThe salience of some barriers to screening varied between different types of nonparticipant. Bad experiences were prominent in the discussions of women who had decided not to attend, while practical barriers were more prominent among intenders. There was also some overlap between nonparticipant types. For example, many of the undecided women described not wanting to go for screening, but with less certainty than decliners. Some intenders (particularly those who had not been screened before) described not really wanting to attend but feeling they ought to. Women's views on the invitation/reminder process also varied; intenders and maintainers appreciated written reminders and general practitioner (GP) prompts but decliners sometimes perceived these as “badgering.” Throughout the interviews, women described changing views on screening in the wider context of ageing and motherhood.ConclusionsThe salience of screening barriers varies by nonparticipant type, offering possibilities for tailored interventions. However, the fluidity of women's stage of screening adoption might have implications for this approach to intervention design.

Background The need for unobtrusive HR (heart rate) monitoring has led to the development of a new generation of strapless HR monitors. The aim of this study was to determine whether such an unobtrusive, wrist-worn optical HR monitor (OHRM) could be equivalent and therefore a valid alternative to a traditional chest strap during a broad range of activities in a heterogeneous healthy population and coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Methods One hundred ninety-nine healthy volunteers, 84 males and 115 females, including 35 overweight-obese subjects, 53 pregnant women, and 20 CAD patients were tested in the present study. Second-by-second HR measured by the OHRM was concurrently evaluated against an ECG-based chest strap monitor during a broad range of activities (i.e., walking, running, cycling, gym, household, and sedentary activities). Results Data coverage, percentage of time the OHRM provides a HR not larger than 10 bpm from the reference, went from a minimum of 92% of the time in the least periodic activity (i.e., gym), to 95% during the most intense activity (i.e., running), and to a maximum of 98% for sedentary activities. The limits of agreement of the difference between the OHRM and the chest strap HR were within the range of ±15 bpm. The OHRM showed a concordance correlation coefficient of 0.98. Overall, the mean absolute error was not larger than 3 bpm, which can be considered clinically acceptable for a number of applications. A similar performance was found for CAD (94.2% coverage, 2.4 bpm error), but the small sample size does not allow any quantitative comparison. Conclusion Heart rate measured by OHRM at the wrist and ECG-based HR measured via a traditional chest strap are acceptably close in a broad range of activities in a heterogeneous, healthy population, and showed initial promising results also in CAD patients. Impulsivity and subjective response to alcohol are predictors of alcohol use disorder. The purpose of this study was to replicate and extend prior research examining relationships between impulsivity and subjective response patterns. In addition, impulsivity and initial subjective response patterns were examined in relation to current heavy episodic drinking and alcohol-related problems.Data were cross-sectional, retrospective self-reports, obtained from baseline assessments from five studies affiliated with the Yale Center for the Translational Neuroscience of Alcoholism. Analyses were conducted in a sample restricted to nondependent, young adults (n = 186) and in a larger, more heterogeneous sample (n = 363). Data were analyzed using hierarchical regression in three separate types of models.In the young adult, nondependent sample, impulsivity was a statistically significant predictor of lower recent sedative subjective response. Impulsivity and initial sedative subjective response patterns were statistically significant predictors of past-year heavy drinking. Impulsivity, but not initial subjective response patterns, was a statistically significant predictor of past-year alcohol-related problems. Findings in the larger sample were similar.More-impulsive individuals may perceive less sedation from alcohol, which is associated with increased heavy drinking. However, higher levels of impulsivity may be more responsible than diminished subjective response for poor decision making that results in negative drinking consequences. These results suggest that high impulsivity and certain subjective response patterns are worthy intervention targets.

In today’s dynamic and uncertain career context, values play an important role for career choice and lifelong career self-management. Values are desirable goals that are sought by individuals to satisfy their needs and are important for understanding career orientations in terms of protean and boundaryless career orientations and career anchors. However, how career orientations or career anchors fit into a well-established and supported model and into the structure of basic human values remains an important and under-investigated question. The aim of this study was to use Schwartz’s model of structural values to empirically explore the relationships and structural correspondences among basic values, career orientations, and career anchors. A heterogeneous sample of 238 employees from French-speaking Switzerland (Mage = 35.60, SD = 13.03) completed the Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ5X), the Protean and Boundaryless Career Attitudes Scales (PCAS, BCAS), and the Career Orientation Inventory (COI) via an anonymous and confidential survey questionnaire. The results showed that it was possible to meaningfully position both career orientations and career anchors in Schwartz’s values structure. The protean and boundaryless career orientations were positively related to Schwartz’s basic values that emphasized openness to change and career anchors and meaningfully followed the motivational continuum of these basic values. Overall, the overlap among the basic values, career orientations, and career anchors appeared relatively important, suggesting that these basic values, orientations and anchors should be considered simultaneously to understand and address the factors and processes underlying individuals’ career choices and paths.

The goals of this study were to explore gender differences in the components of financial literacy (financial knowledge, financial attitude and financial behavior) and financial satisfaction, and to explore gender differences in the relationship between financial satisfaction and the financial literacy components. Analyses conducted on a data collected on a large and heterogeneous sample of Croatian citizens (N = 900) showed that men scored higher on some financial literacy variables and were more financially satisfied. Moreover, in the male subsample there were significantly stronger correlations between financial satisfaction and some financial literacy variables (rational financial attitude, self-assessment of financial management and monitoring expenses) when compared to the female subsample. In addition to demographic variables, significant predictors of financial satisfaction in both gender groups were primarily financial behaviors. Financial attitude component explained additional financial satisfaction variance for men but not for women. Financial knowledge as the third component was not a significant predictor of financial satisfaction for either gender.

Students entering tertiary studies possess a diverse range of prior experiences in their academic preparation for tertiary chemistry so academics need tools to enable them to respond to issues in diversity in conceptual models possessed by entering students. Concept inventories can be used to provide formative feedback to help students identify concepts that they need to address to improve construction of subsequent understanding enabling their learning.Modular, formative learning activities that can be administered inside or outside of class in first year chemistry courses have been developed. These activities address key missing and mis-conceptions possessed by incoming student. Engagement in these learning activities by students and academics will help shift the culture of diagnostic and formative assessment within the tertiary context and address issues around the secondary/tertiary transition. This diagnostic/intervention framework is currently being trialed across five Australian tertiary institutions encompassing a large heterogeneous sample of students.

Inferring patterns of synchronous brain activity from a heterogeneous sample of electroencephalograms (EEG) is scientifically and methodologically challenging. While it is intuitively and statistically appealing to rely on readings from more than one individual in order to highlight recurrent patterns of brain activation, pooling information across subjects presents non-trivial methodological problems. We discuss some of the scientific issues associated with the understanding of synchronized neuronal activity and propose a methodological framework for statistical inference from a sample of EEG readings. Our work builds on classical contributions in time-series, clustering and functional data analysis, in an effort to reframe a challenging inferential problem in the context of familiar analytical techniques. Some attention is paid to computational issues, with a proposal based on the combination of machine learning and Bayesian techniques.

The purposes were to determine if explanatory style (i.e. tendency toward optimism versus pessimism) (a) is a collective team belief that (b) differentiates between more and less successful sport teams. Team success was operationalised by winning percentage. For explanatory style, athletes (n = 442) from a heterogeneous sample of sport teams (k = 39) estimated the controllability, universality, stability, and globality of a number of hypothetical negative events. Campylobacter enteritis in humans is primarily associated with C. jejuni/coli infection. The impact of other Campylobacter spp. is likely to be underestimated due to the bias of culture methods towards Campylobacter jejuni/coli diagnosis. Stool antigen tests are becoming increasingly popular and appear generally less species-specific. A review of independent studies of the ProSpecT® Campylobacter Microplate enzyme immunoassay (EIA) developed for C. jejuni/coli showed comparable diagnostic results to culture methods but the examination of non-jejuni/coli Campylobacter spp. was limited and the limit-of-detection (LOD), where reported, varied between studies. This study investigated LOD of EIA for Campylobacter upsaliensis, Campylobacter hyointestinalis and Campylobacter helveticus spiked in human stools. Multiple stools and Campylobacter isolates were used in three different concentrations (10(4)-10(9)CFU/ml) to reflect sample heterogeneity. All Campylobacter species evaluated were detectable by EIA. Multivariate analysis showed LOD varied between Campylobacter spp. and faecal consistency as fixed effects and individual faecal samples as random effects. EIA showed excellent performance in replicate testing for both within and between batches of reagents, in agreement between visual and spectrophotometric reading of results, and returned no discordance between the bacterial concentrations within independent dilution test runs (positive results with lower but not higher concentrations). This study shows how limitations in experimental procedures lead to an overestimation of consistency and uniformity of LOD for EIA that may not hold under routine use in diagnostic laboratories. Benefits and limitations for clinical practice and the influence on estimates of performance characteristics from detection of multiple Campylobacter spp. by EIA are discussed.

The present study examined work-family conflict and enrichment and perceived health (stress symptoms, life satisfaction) according to the following family types: 1 = two-parent families with 1–2 children, 2 = two-parent families with 3 or more children, 3 = single-parent families with 1 or more children, 4 = childless co-habiting/married couples. We also studied whether work-family conflict and enrichment show direct and interaction (buffering) effects on perceived health, and whether these effects vary by family type. Empirically, the study was based on a heterogeneous sample of Finnish employees (N = 5097). The results showed that parents reported more family-to-work conflict, family-to-work enrichment and work-to-family enrichment compared to childless couples. Moreover, single parents scored lower in life satisfaction than the other groups and childless couples reported stress symptoms more often than parents. In the development of digital photogrammetric system, automatic image matching process play an important role. The automatic image matching is used in finding the conjugate points of an aerial photograph stereopair automatically. This matching technique gives quite significant contribution especially in the development of 3D photogrammetry in an attempt to get the exact and precise topographic information during the stereo restitution. There are two image matching methods that have been so far developed, i.e. the area based system for gray level environment and the feature based system for natural feature environment. This research is trying to implement the area based matching with normalized cross correlation technique to get the correlation coefficient between the spectral value of the left image and its pair on the right. Based on the previous researches, the use of color image could increase the quality of matching. One of the color image matching technique is known as Separate Channel Mean Value. In order to be able to see the performance of the technique, a number of sampling areas with various different characteristics have been chosen, i.e. the heterogeneous, homogeneous, texture, shadow, and contrast. The result shows the highest similarity measure is obtained on heterogeneous sample area at size of all reference and search image, i.e. (11 pixels x 11 pixels) and (23 pixels x 23 pixels). In these area the correlation coefficient reached more than 0.7 and the highest percentage of similarity measure is obtained. The average of total similarity measure of conjugate images in the sampling image area only reach about 41.43 % of success. Therefore, this technique has a weakness and some treatment to overcome the problems is still needed.

Melanoma cell lines are an essential tool for melanoma research. Melanoma cells are routinely identified using antigens encoded by genes that are commonly expressed in melanocytes and melanoma cell lines. Common markers include: S100; HMB-45; and Melan-A. Our study explores the expression of these three markers in four different human melanoma cell lines: WM35; WM793; SK-MEL-28; and MM127. All melanoma cell lines we use are validated using short tandem repeat (STR) profiling. The alleles obtained from STR profiling are analysed using the DMSZ database to give the closest match to each cell line we consider. Results for the metastatic melanoma cell line, MM127, are not as expected since there is no match identified using the MM127 alleles. We also examine the expression of S100; HMB-45 and Melan-A at both the mRNA and the protein level by performing immunofluorescence, Western blotting and quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assays. Again, our results for the metastatic melanoma cell line, MM127, are not as expected. This cell line is not identifiable using any of the three markers. Since the MM127 cell line does not express any of the standard melanoma-associated markers, we suggest that it would be difficult to perform further melanoma-related experiments using this cell line, and that this cell line should be used with care.

Metagenomic studies suggest that only a small fraction of the viruses that exist in nature have been identified and studied. Characterization of unknown viral genomes is hindered by the many genomes populating any virus sample. A new method is reported that integrates drop-based microfluidics and computational analysis to enable the purification of any single viral species from a complex mixed virus sample and the retrieval of complete genome sequences. By using this platform, the genome sequence of a 5243 bp dsDNA virus that was spiked into wastewater was retrieved with greater than 96% sequence coverage and more than 99.8% sequence identity. This method holds great potential for virus discovery since it allows enrichment and sequencing of previously undescribed viruses as well as known viruses.

International audience; We focus on the problem of analyzing corpora composed of irregularly sampled (multi-rate) heterogeneous temporal data. We propose a novel convolutive multi-rate factorization model for extracting multi-modal patterns from such multi-rate data. Our model builds up on previously proposed multi-view (coupled) nonnegative matrix factor-ization techniques, and extends them by accounting for heterogeneous sample rates and enabling the patterns to have a duration. We illustrate the proposed methodology on the joint study of audiovisual data for speech analysis.

The dataset contains the data of a large heterogeneous sample of participants who completed the Hebrew version of the Disgust Scale Revised (DS_R), and provided various demographic variables. Participants were chosen from the general population, using a convenience sampling method. They were approached at various locations (e.g., shopping centres, transport hubs, and government buildings) during the period of 2011- 2012. The legends for Figure 1 and Figure 2 should read "High Daily Resilience".] This study among a heterogeneous sample of employees expands the Job-Demands (JD-R) theory by examining how interpersonal conflicts at work-task and relationship conflict-spillover into the nonwork domain on a daily basis. We hypothesized that daily personal resources can buffer the daily negative spillover of interpersonal conflicts from work into the nonwork domain. A total of 113 employees (n = 565 occasions) filled in a daily diary questionnaire in the evening before bedtime over 5 consecutive working days. Results of multilevel analysis showed that the presence of daily personal resources is essential to buffer the spillover of interpersonal conflict at work to the nonwork domain. Specifically, on days that employees were not very optimistic or resilient, interpersonal conflicts resulted in higher strain-based work-life conflict experiences. These findings contribute to the JD-R theory and show how the unfavorable effects of daily interpersonal conflicts in the work domain may be avoided in the nonwork domain through enhancing personal resources. Objectives Mental fatigability refers to the failure to sustain participation in tasks requiring mental effort. Older adults with vascular risk are at particular risk for experiencing mental fatigability. The present study (1) tested a new way of measuring objective mental fatigability by examining its association with perceived mental fatigability; and (2) identified associated psychological, physiological, and situational predictors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 49 community-dwelling participants aged 75 + years with vascular risk. A 20-minute fatigability-manipulation task was used to induce mental fatigability and develop objective and perceived mental fatigability measures. Objective fatigability was calculated by the change of reaction time over the course of the task. Perceived fatigability was calculated by the change of fatigue self-reported before and after the task. A set of potential psychological, physiological, and situational predictors were measured. Results There was a significant increase in reaction time and self-reported fatigue to the fatigability manipulation task, indicating occurrence of objective and perceived mental fatigability. Reaction time and self-reported fatigue were moderately, but significantly correlated. Higher levels of executive control and having a history of more frequently engaging in mental activities were associated with lower objective mental fatigability. None of the examined factors were associated with perceived mental fatigability. Conclusion Objective and perceived mental fatigability were sensitive to our fatigability-manipulation task. While these two measures were correlated, they were not associated with the same factors. These findings need to be validated in studies with a more heterogeneous sample and a greater variety of fatigability-manipulation tasks.

During walking on an instrumented treadmill with an embedded force platform or grid of pressure sensors, center-of-pressure (COP) trajectories exhibit a characteristic butterfly-like shape, reflecting the medio-lateral and anterior-posterior weight shifts associated with alternating steps. We define "gaitography" as the analysis of such COP trajectories during walking (the "gaitograms"). It is currently unknown, however, if gaitography can be employed to characterize pathological gait, such as lateralized gait impairments. We therefore registered gaitograms for a heterogeneous sample of persons with a trans-femoral and trans-tibial amputation during treadmill walking at a self-selected comfortable speed. We found that gaitograms directly visualize between-person differences in prosthetic gait in terms of step width and the relative duration of prosthetic and non-prosthetic single-support stance phases. We further demonstrated that one should not only focus on the gaitogram's shape but also on the time evolution along that shape, given that the COP evolves much slower in the single-support phase than in the double-support phase. Finally, commonly used temporal and spatial prosthetic gait characteristics were derived, revealing both individual and systematic differences in prosthetic and non-prosthetic step lengths, step times, swing times, and double-support durations. Because gaitograms can be rapidly collected in an unobtrusive and markerless manner over multiple gait cycles without constraining foot placement, clinical application of gaitography seems both expedient and appealing. Studies examining the repeatability of gaitograms and evaluating gaitography-based gait characteristics against a gold standard with known validity and reliability are required before gaitography can be clinically applied.

The aim of the study was to examine how perceived spouse's affectionate and antagonistic behaviours contribute to one's marital satisfaction. Firstly, we explored whether perception of partner's affectionate and antagonistic behaviours vary with gender, age, length of marriage and family structure. Secondly, we examined the relation between perceived partner's behaviour and marital satisfaction, while controlling for contextual variables. Questionnaire assessing love, marital satisfaction, perceived partners' affectionate and antagonistic behaviours and demographic data was administered to a heterogeneous sample of 302 married couples from Croatia with the average marriage length of 18 years and age span of 20–82 years. Results indicate that perceived spouse's affectionate and antagonistic behaviours both contribute to marital satisfaction with the impact of antagonistic behaviours being buffered when it appears in affectionate relationship. These effects are not moderated by age, gender, marriage duration or family structure. Finally, the perception of partner's affectionate and antagonistic behaviours had significant incremental power over feelings of love and other contextual variables when predicting marital satisfaction.

In a study concerning a group of cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy three research questions were addressed. (1) Is fatigue a valid criterion for depression in these somatically ill patients? (2) What is the 'cause-and-effect' relation between fatigue and depression? (3) To what extent are fatigue and depression related to patients' quality of life. A heterogeneous sample of cancer patients (n = 250) were interviewed before treatment, 2 weeks after treatment and 9 months later. Fatigue was measured using the MFI, a self-report instrument covering five dimensions of fatigue. Depression was assessed with the non-somatic items of the CES-D. Quality of life had to be indicated on a Cantrill ladder. Fatigue and depression do not follow the same course over time. Just after radiotherapy, fatigue had either increased or remained stable, depending on the dimension under consideration. Depression, in contrast, decreased. Nine months later fatigue had decreased, whereas levels of depression remained stable. Concurrent relations between fatigue and depression were mostly moderate. There was no strong evidence for a cause-and-effect relationship between depression and fatigue. Depression showed highest concurrent relationships with quality of life, especially before treatment. Prospectively, depression and the dimension of physical fatigue were the main predictors for quality of life. Fatigue is not a valid criterion for depression in these patients. Nor is there a strong cause-and-effect relationship. Both depression and physical fatigue are relevant to patients' quality of life.

The isolation and sorting of cells has become an increasingly important step in chemical and biological analyses. As a unit operation in more complex analyses, isolating a phenotypically pure cell population from a heterogeneous sample presents unique challenges. Microfluidic systems are ideal platforms for performing cell separations, enabling integration with other techniques and enhancing traditional separation modalities. In recent years there have been several techniques that use surface antigen affinity, physical interactions, or a combination of the two to achieve high separation purity and efficiency. This review discusses methods including magnetophoretic, acoustophoretic, sedimentation, electric, and hydrodynamic methods for physical separations. We also discuss affinity methods, including magnetic sorting, flow sorting, and affinity capture.

Background: General Practitioners (GPs) sometimes base their clinical decisions on ‘ gut feelings. ’ Research into the signifi cance of this phenomenon with focus groups and a Delphi consensus procedure in the Netherlands provided a concept of ‘ gut feelings: ’ a sense of alarm, a sense of reassurance and several determinants. The transculturality of ‘ gut feelings ’ has been examined briefl y until now as the issue is complex. Objective: To determine whether a consensus on ‘ gut feelings ’ in general practice in France could be obtained. Using a similar Delphi consensus procedure and the same six initial statements as in the Netherlands, and compare the French results with the seven fi nal Dutch consensual statements. Method: Qualitative research, including a Delphi consensus procedure after a forward-backward translation (FBT) of the initial Dutch statements of ‘ gut feelings. ’ A heterogeneous sample of 34 French expert GPs participated. FBT of the fi nal French statements was undertaken for a content comparison with the Dutch. Results : After three Delphi rounds, French GPs reached agreement on nine statements. Many similarities have been found between the Dutch and the French defi ning statements, with reservations concerning the ‘ sense of reassurance, ’ which French GPs seemed to feel more cautious about. Conclusion: ‘ Gut feelings ’ are a well-defi ned concept in France too. The Dutch and the French consensual statements seem very close. The transculturality of the concept is confi rmed, which is a new indicator that ‘ gut feelings ’ are a self-contained concept.

Despite continued acceleration of computer access in elementary and secondary schools, computer integration is not necessarily given as an everyday learning tool. A heterogeneous sample of 185 elementary and 204 secondary teachers was asked to respond to open-ended survey questions in order to understand why integration of computer-based technologies does or does not fit with their teaching philosophy, what factors impact planning to use computer technologies in the classroom, and what characteristics define excellent teachers who integrate technology. Qualitative analysis of open-ended questions indicated that, overall, educators are supportive of computer integration describing the potential of technology using constructivist language, such as “authentic tasks” and “self-regulated learning.” Responses from “high” and “low” integrating teachers were compared across themes. The diversity of the themes and the emerging patterns of those themes from “high and low integrators” indicate that the integration of computer technology is a complex concern that requires sensitivity to individual and contextual variables.

Campylobacter spp. represent a common cause of gastroenteritis in humans, with C. jejuni and C. coli considered responsible for the majority of clinical cases. Many human diagnostic laboratories use the ProSpecT® Campylobacter Microplate Assay (EIA) as a sole or screening test for detection of C. jejuni and C. coli, as this technique is easier, faster and cheaper than Campylobacter spp. culture. Campylobacter upsaliensis can cause a diarrhoeal illness similar to that caused by C. jejuni in humans, but methods routinely used for C. jejuni and C. coli detection, including the EIA, are not optimised or have not been evaluated for the detection of other Campylobacter species. Campylobacter upsaliensis and C. helveticus have been more commonly isolated from dogs and cats than C. jejuni and C. coli in most studies. Campylobacter spp. from pets are potentially zoonotic, while the pathogenicity in pets remains uncertain. The significance of C. upsaliensis and C. helveticus infections may be underestimated in human medicine due to detection methods applied. The aim of this pilot study was to assess if the EIA detects C. upsaliensis and C. helveticus isolated from different pets in spiked human clinical samples. In addition, the ability of EIA to detect Campylobacter spp. in dog and cat faeces was assessed. Ten clinical human faecal samples and two healthy dog and cat faeces confirmed negative by EIA were tested by a range of culture methods to exclude presence of Campylobacter spp. Dilutions of eight C. upsaliensis, five C. helveticus cultures, and one C. jejuni and C. coli culture, all PCR confirmed, were added to aliquots of faecal samples to obtain a range of viable bacteria from 103 to 108 CFU/ml. EIA was performed in duplicates following the manufacturer's instructions. Fifty out of 82 samples tested positive by EIA at various dilutions: 33/52 C. upsaliensis, 15/26 C. helveticus, 1/2 of each C. jejuni and C. coli. Detection limit varied between the isolates and was lower in watery than semi-solid faeces. In conclusion, EIA detected C. upsaliensis and C. helveticus in spiked faeces from human clinical cases and all Campylobacter spp. tested in healthy pets. EIA should not be used as a sole detection method and culture methods selected following a positive EIA result should enable detection of a wide range of Campylobacter spp. In addition, EIA may be a useful test in pets to rule out Campylobacter spp. infection and in epidemiological investigations.

Since the 1970s there has been an reemerging interest in Galton's (1883) senses-intelligence hypothesis. The essence of this hypothesis is the conceptual link between fine-tuned sensory functioning and superior intellectual ability. Several studies have investigated the sensory-cognitive link within auditory and visual modalities. In this study, the intersystemic relationship between sensory and cognitive functioning was extended to the tactile modality by examining the associations between three measures of tactile information processing and intelligence in a heterogeneous sample of middle-aged adults (N = 179; age range = 30–51). Two of the three tactile tasks measured discrimination ability (i.e., roughness discrimination and part-whole matching), whereas the third task measured tactile pressure sensitivity. Results from a series of analyses indicate that sensory measures from the tactile modality are at least as highly correlated with intellectual ability (r = .18 to .33) as measures of auditory (r = .15) or visual (r = .20) acuity. All together, the three tactile measures accounted for 20.8% of the total variance in intelligence. The two tactile discrimination measures were found to be better predictors of intelligence than measures of simple sensory acuity.

Background The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of the SC-StepRx pedometer to assess moderate and vigorous physical activity during treadmill walking and running in a heterogeneous sample of children and youth aged 10-17 years. Methods Physical activity intensity assessed via indirect calorimetry served as the criterion standard. A convenience sample of 40 participants (20 boys, 20 girls) wore 6 SC-StepRx pedometers, 2 ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers, 2 Actical accelerometers, 1 Walk4Life MVP pedometer and 1 NL-1000 pedometer while walking/running at speeds approximating 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 METs. Associations between indirect calorimetry and each activity monitor were assessed using linear regression analyses in SAS 9.2. Results Estimates of moderate and vigorous physical activity from all monitors were significantly associated with the criterion standard of indirect calorimetry.
