This article discusses the effect of cotton gin compost and poultry manure on enzymes in soils contaminated with lead. The results showed that lead contaminated soils amended by organic wastes exhibited more enzyme activity than untreated soils. The enzyme activities that were measured at four different incubation times and variable lead concentrations included urease, protease-BBA, beta-glucosidase, alkaline phosphatase, and arylsulfatase. The level of enzyme activity was higher in cotton gin compost than in poultry manure. The adsorption of lead was also higher with cotton gin compost. This suggests that for soils polluted with lead, organic wastes with higher humic acid concentrations are more beneficial.

The article discusses the impact of soil amendments to biological properties of remediated soils. Poultry manure and crushed cotton gin compost were applied to a degraded soil to observe the effect of organic waste to characteristics and biological properties of soil. Results shows that both organic soil amendments exhibit positive impact to the properties of the soil including soil enzyme activity and soil microbial biomass. Poultry-amended soils has greater enzyme activity and soil microbial biomass than crushed cotton gin compost treated soils.

Composts and vermicomposts from a municipal composting plant in northwestern Patagonia, both having undergone a thermophilic phase, (with the vermicompost being inoculated with earthworms after the thermophilic stage) and a nonthermophilic backyard vermicompost were studied. Their effects on soil biological and biochemical properties and plant growth were evaluated in laboratory incubations and a greenhouse trial, using a degraded volcanic soil amended at rates of 20 and 40 g kg-1 of vermicompost or compost. Between the two municipal products, the vermicompost had significantly larger nutrient concentrations than the compost; when mixed with the soil, the vermicompost also had higher microbial populations size and activity, and produced increased ryegrass yields. Compared to the municipal compost, the backyard vermicompost had similar or higher nutrient concentrations but its effects on soil microbial biomass, soil microbial activity and ryegrass yields were lower. Our results suggest that no generalization can be made regarding the higher quality of vermicomposts vs. composts, because the product quality depends both on the original materials and the technology employed. The present work studies the urinary excretion of PGE and PGI (6-keto PGF 1α) in 11 insulin-dependent diabetic patients with chronic renal failure with a glomerular filtration rate of 33.9 ±9.03 ml/min who had hyporeninaemic hypoaldosteronism to evaluate the influence of these prostaglandins on the appearance of this latter process. The results obtained in this group of patients were compared with those of a control group of healthy individuals, another group of nine non-diabetic patients with CRF, and a last group of eight insulin-dependent diabetic patients with normal renal functión to evaluate to what extent the possible variations in prostaglandin excretion could be related to the diabetes, CRF, or a conjunction of both processes. The results of the groups of diabetic patients with CRF were C 33.9 ±9.03 ml/min, decreased (< 0.0001) with respect to the control group and with no difference with the CRF group without diabetes; plasma potassium (4.7 ±0.4 mEq/l), increased <0.005) with respect to the values found in the control group; plasma bicarbonate (17.8 ± 1.8 mEq/l), decreased (P< 0.005) with respect to the control group and also, though not significantly, with respect to the group of non-diabetic patients with CRF. Plasma aldosterone (pg/ml): resting 44.3±14.9; standing 65.7 ±63.5 and post-frusemide 65.5 ±58.6, decreased (P<0.01) with respect to the other three groups. Plasma renin activity (PRA) (ng/ml/h): resting 0.34±0.3; standing 0.6 ± 0.4, post-fmsemide 0.9 ±0.5, decreased significantly with respect to the other three groups. PGE (pg/mg Cr): basal 1720±397; post-frusemide 2636±462, increased (P<0.05) with respect to the control group and that of the diabetic patients without CRF, but with no differences compared with the non-diabetic patients with CRF. PGI (pg/mg cr): basal 369 ±45 and post-frusemide 699 ± 103, increased (P<0.01) with respect to the controls and diabetic patients with normal renal function and with no differences compared with the non-diabetic patients with CRF. Our findings indicate that patients with diabetes mellitus and CRF showing hyporeninaemic hypoaldosteronism have high urinary excretion of PGE and PGI. The increase in the urinary prostaglandins is related to CRF. The data rule out the hypothesis that the hyporeninaemic hypoaldosteronism of these patients is due to a deficit of prostaglandins. The continuous miniaturization process in the microelectronic industry, along with the introduction of Interlayer Dielectrics (ILDs) with poorer mechanical properties, makes necessary the development of characterization techniques to evaluate the mechanical performance of very thin films. This work presents a mechanical characterization technique for thin films based on membrane testing. Membranes, micromachined with anisotropic wet etching of Si, are tested to fracture using a nanoindenter to apply the load and register the provoked deflection. The technique is applied to the fracture characterization of two different ILDs with four thicknesses ranging from 100nm to 500nm. Combination of experiments and finite element simulations allows for the calculation of the strength of the materials from the fracture load. The technique permits to discriminate both ILDs and to establish clear thickness dependence: for both materials, 100nm films show a significant lower strength while no effect of film thickness on strength is observed in the range between 200 and 500nm. A sensitivity analysis of the outcome of the technique, the fracture stress, to the variability of the input parameters is presented, showing the robustness of the proposed approach: the experimental error in the fracture stress is smaller than the variation in the input parameters. Persistence of minimal residual disease (MRD) after treatment for myeloma predicts inferior outcomes, but within MRD-positive patients there is great heterogeneity with both early and very late relapses. Among different MRD techniques, flow cytometry provides additional information about antigen expression on tumor cells, which could potentially contribute to stratify MRD-positive patients. We investigated the prognostic value of those antigens required to monitor MRD in 1265 newly diagnosed patients enrolled in the GEM2000, GEM2005MENOS65, GEM2005MAS65 and GEM2010MAS65 protocols. Overall, CD19 pos , CD27 neg , CD38 lo , CD45 pos , CD81 pos , CD117 neg and CD138 lo expression predicted inferior outcomes. Through principal component analysis, we found that simultaneous CD38 low CD81 pos CD117 neg expression emerged as the most powerful combination with independent prognostic value for progression-free survival (HR:1.69; P=0.002). This unique phenotypic profile retained prognostic value among MRD-positive patients. We then used next-generation flow to determine antigen stability throughout the course of the disease, and found that the expression of antigens required to monitor MRD is mostly stable from diagnosis to MRD stages, except for CD81 whose expression progressively increased from baseline to chemoresistant tumor cells (14 vs 28%). Altogether, we showed that the phenotypic profile of tumor cells provides additional prognostic information, and could be used to further predict risk of relapse among MRD-positive patients.

Background: Mexican migrants are at higher risk for HIV than Mexicans who do not migrate to the United States. Migration to the United States was the driving factor of the early Mexican HIV epidemic, and it is likely that it continues to strongly influence incidence. An overview of migration of Mexicans to the United States identifies many pervasive environmental and structural factors as well as risk behaviors that render migrants vulnerable to HIV infection. However, published studies sampling Mexicans while in the United States suggest a relatively low prevalence of HIV among the general migrant population. To better understand this apparent paradox, we sought to identify any demographic variables among Mexicans while in Mexico that may indicate that migrants have or acquire resources that have a protective effect from their vulnerability due to migration., Methods: A California-Mexico binational collaboration project, with a respondent-driven sample with population-based quotas, was conducted in five Mexican states from December 2004 to January 2005, in areas with a high index of migration to the United States. We compared demographic and behavior variables of Mexicans with a history of migration to the United States in the past 12 months to nonmigrant Mexicans living in the same community., Results: A total of 1539 migrants and 1236 nonmigrants were recruited from five Mexican states. Migrants (men and women) reported more HIV risk behavior than nonmigrants in the past 12 months. Migrants reported more sexual partners and noninjected drug use. Migrants reported higher condom use during vaginal sex and were more likely to have taken an HIV test., Conclusion: Though migrants reported higher HIV-related risk behaviors, they also reported higher condom use. Migrants were more likely to have accessed an HIV test indicating an opportunity for a prevention intervention. More binational collaborations are needed to research the different levels of vulnerability among Mexican migrants and actual acquisition of HIV infection. In addition, more research is needed to identify protective factors for HIV prevention interventions among Mexican migrant communities in Mexico and in the United States.

The objective of this paper was to investigate the possible agricultural use of the vermicomposting process leachates. Two leachates coming, respectively, from the vermicomposting of cow dung (SCD) and the vermicomposting of green forages (SGF), as well as solution of Hewitt (C) were used at a dose of 1 ml 500 ml(-1) in the foliar fertilization of tomato plants. Treatments were applied 30, 60 and 90 days after planting (DAP). The obtained results showed that foliar fertilization with SCD and SGF increased the morphological and chemical parameters on tomato crop with respect to the plants receiving foliar treatment with SH and C, possibly due to the humic substances content in SCD and SGF. The higher content of humic substances in SGF with respect to the SCD are possibly the responsible of the higher chlorophyll contents observed in the plants receiving the former treatment. This aspect possibly promoted an increase in plant photosynthesis and therefore an increase in fruit quality.

The effects of four organic wastes, including cotton gin crushed compost (CC), poultry manure (PM), sewage sludge (SS) and organic municipal solid waste (MSW) on some biological properties of a Xerollic Calciorthid soil polluted with gasoline at two loading rates (5% and 10%) were studied in an incubation experiment. Three hundred grams of sieved soil (<2mm) were polluted with gasoline and mixed with PM at a rate of 10%, CC at a rate of 17.2%, SS at a rate of 23.1%, or MSW at a rate of 13.1%, applying to the soil the same amount of organic matter with each organic amendment. An unamended soil, non polluted (C) and polluted with gasoline at 5% (G1) and 10% (G2) rate were used as reference. Soil samples were collected after 1, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 and 270 d of incubation and analyzed for microbial biomass carbon, respiration and dehydrogenase, urease, beta-glucosidase, phosphatase and arylsulfatase activities. At the end of the incubation period, soil biological properties were higher in organic amended soils than in C, G1 and G2 treatments. In particular, soil microbial biomass carbon and dehydrogenase, urease, beta-glucosidase, phosphatase and arylsulfatase activities increased 87.1%, 92.9%, 88.7%, 93.2%, 78.2% and 85.3%, respectively for CC-amended soils respect to G2, 85.7%, 82.3%, 87.3%, 92.2%, 76.7% and 83.6%, respectively for PM-amended soils; 82%, 90%, 84.8%, 89.9%, 74.1% and 80%, respectively for SS-amended soils; and 71.3%, 78.3% 26.2%, 38.2%, 79.7% and 88.6%, respectively for MSW-amended soils. Since the adsorption capacity of gasoline was higher in CC than the PM, SS and MSW-amended soils, it can be concluded that the addition of organic wastes with higher humic acid concentration is more beneficial for remediation of soils polluted with gasoline.

Tetrazolium reduction assays, phospholipid analysis, and 16S rRNA (rDNA) sequence analysis were applied to assess the distribution, composition and activity of microbial communities developing in biofilters treating non-ozonated and ozonated drinking water. The response of media-attached biomass to both operating temperature (3 degrees C vs. > 12 degrees C) and ozone application point was assessed. As judged by 2-(p-iodo-phenyl)-3-(p-nitrophenyl)-s-phenyl tetrazolium chloride (INT) reduction, the dehydrogenase activity in biofilter systems that were operated with non-ozonated water was 55% lower than in identical filters operating with ozonated water. There was no significant difference between the microbiological activity measured in a biofilter series treating ozonated water and an identical series where ozonated water was introduced at an intermediate point. The biomass levels in biofilter systems that were operated with ozonated water were 47% higher on average than identical systems operated with non-ozonated water. Operating temperature had no significant impact on total biomass levels; however, specific dehydrogenase activity was 70% higher in systems operated at ambient temperatures (> 12 degrees C) than in systems held at 3 degrees C. Phospholipid and rDNA analysis suggests that there was a community structure response to ozone application and operating temperature, but no response to different ozone application points.

To estimate the prevalence of urogenital chlamydial infection among young, low-income women in northern California and to describe correlates of infection, a population-based door-to-door household cluster survey was conducted from 1996 through 1998. The participants included 1439 women 18-29 years of age, with a mean age of 24 years, most of whom were African American (43%) or Latina (23%) and had a median income of $500-$999 per month. Most (94%) had received health care in the past year, and approximately 50% was covered by state insurance programs. Although more than half (62%) had had a recent pelvic examination, only 42% had recently used a condom with a new partner. The prevalence of urogenital chlamydial infection was 3.2% (95% confidence interval, 2.2%-4.2%). Women with chlamydia were more likely to be younger (18-21 years of age) and nonwhite and to have lower socioeconomic status. These data demonstrated an approximately 2-3-fold greater burden of infection than routine surveillance data have suggested.

Benzotriazole and its derivatives comprise an important class of corrosion inhibitors, typically used as trace additives in industrial chemical mixtures such as coolants, deicers, surface coatings, cutting fluids, and hydraulic fluids. Recent studies have shown that benzotriazole derivatives are a major component of aircraft deicing fluids (ADFs) responsible for toxicity to bacteria (Microtox). Our current research compared the toxicity of benzotriazole (BT), two methylbenzotriazole (MeBT) isomers, and butylbenzotriazole (BBT). Acute toxicity assays were used to model the response of three common test organisms: Microtox bacteria (Vibrio fischeri), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) and water flea (Ceriodaphnia dubia). The response of all the three organisms varied over two orders of magnitude among all compounds. Vibrio fischeri was more sensitive than either C. dubia or P. promelas to all the test materials, while C. dubia was less sensitive than P. promelas. The response of test organisms to unmethylated benzotriazole and 4-methylbenzotriazole was similar, whereas 5-methylbenzotriazole was more toxic than either of these two compounds. BBT was the most toxic benzotriazole derivative tested, inducing acute toxicity at a concentration of < or = 3.3 mg/l to all organisms.

Benzotriazole derivatives are widely used corrosion inhibitors and their fate during wastewater treatment processes is unknown. The purpose of this research was to study the toxic effects and fate of the two commercially significant benzotriazole isomers used in aircraft deicing fluids (4-, and 5-, methylbenzotriazole [MeBT]) during anaerobic digestion. Experiments were executed in microcosms using mesophilic anaerobic biomass co-digesting wastewater sludge and propylene glycol. Sorption of MeBT to digesting solids could be approximated with a Freundlich model, and no anaerobic breakdown of either MeBT isomer was detected. Digesters fed more than 300 mg/L MeBT responded with a significant decrease in methanogenic microbial activity and volatile solids production and a concomitant increase in accumulation of volatile fatty acids. Direct microscopic measurements using fluorescent phylogenetic probes applied to digesting biomass revealed that members of both Archaea and Bacteria domains were sensitive to MeBT. Granular activated carbon (GAC) (volatile solids: GAC = 10%) reduced the apparent toxic effects of MeBT; GAC addition nearly restored the baseline activity of digesters fed MeBT (500 to 1000 mg/L).

Introduction: Renal function is one of the most important prognostic factors in multiple myeloma (MM). Patients with renal failure are generally excluded from high dose therapy even though they display a poor prognosis with conventional chemotherapy schemes. The aim of this study was to analyze the outcome of MM patients with renal insufficiency undergoing autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), including the evaluation of the quality of PB stem cell collections, kinetics of engraftment, transplant-related mortality, response to high dose chemotherapy and survival., Materials and Methods: From a total of 566 valuable patients included in the MM Spanish ASCT registry, three groups of patients were defined: group BA, patients with abnormal renal function at diagnosis but normal at transplant (73 cases); group BB, patients with abnormal function both at diagnosis and at transplant (14 cases); and group AA (control group, 479 cases), patients who constantly had normal renal function., Results and Conclusion: Patients from groups BA and BB presented with a significantly higher number of adverse prognostic factors, reflecting that we were dealing with high tumor MM cases, as compared with patients from group AA. The number of mononuclear cells, CD34+ cells and CFU-GM cells collected in patients with non-reversible renal insufficiency was similar to those harvested in MM patients with normal renal function. Moreover, neutrophil and platelet engraftments were identical in patients with and without renal failure (days +11 and +12, respectively). By contrast, transplant-related mortality (TRM) was significantly higher in group BB patients (29%) than in groups BA (4.1%) and AA (3.3%). In multivariate analysis only three variables showed independent influence on TRM: poor performance status (ECOG 3), hemoglobin <9.5 g/dl and serum creatinine > or =5 mg/dl. The response to high dose therapy was independent of renal function. Interestingly, 43% of patients from group BB showed an improvement in renal function (creatinine < 2 mg/dl) after transplant. The three-year overall survival from transplantation was 56, 49 and 61% for the BB, BA and AA groups, respectively, with a statistically significant difference favoring group AA (P<0.01). PFS did not differ significantly between the three groups of patients. In multivariate analysis the only unfavorable independent prognostic factors for overall survival were poor performance status either at diagnosis or at transplant, high beta(2)-microglobulin levels, and no response to transplant. According to these results, ASCT is an attractive alternative for MM patients with renal insufficiency, and it should not constitute a criterion for exclusion from transplant unless patients display poor performance status and very high creatinine levels (>5 mg/dl).
