Abstract

Optics of Charged Particles, 2nd edition, describes how charged particles move in the fields of magnetic and electrostatic dipoles, quadrupoles, higher order multipoles, and field-free regions. Since the first edition, published over 30 years ago, new technologies have emerged and have been used for new ion optical instruments like, for instance, time-of-flight mass analyzers, which are described now. Fully updated and revised, this new edition provides ways to design mass separators, spectrographs, and spectrometers, which are the key tools in organic chemistry and for drug developments, in environmental trace analyses and for investigations in nuclear physics like the search for super heavy elements as well as molecules in space science. Abstract

The masses of the exotic isotopes $^{210\ensuremath{-}214}\mathrm{Ac}$ and $^{210\ensuremath{-}214}\mathrm{Ra}$ have been measured with a multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph. These isotopes were obtained in flight as fusion-evaporation products behind the gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS-II at RIKEN. The new direct mass measurements serve as an independent and direct benchmark for existing $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ spectroscopy data in this mass region. Further, new mass anchor points are set for U and Np nuclei close to the $N=126$ shell closure for a future benchmark of the $Z=92$ subshell for neutron-deficient heavy isotopes. Our mass results are in general in good agreement with the previously indirectly determined mass values. Together with the measurement data, reasons for possible mass ambiguities from decay-data links between ground states are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Precision mass measurements of ^63Cu, ^64–66Zn, ^65–67Ga, ^65–67Ge, ^67As, ^79,81Br, ^79Kr, ^80,81Rb, and ^79,80Sr were performed with a multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph. The masses of these nuclides were determined by the single reference method using isobaric references. In order to obtain precise results, time-of-flight drift compensations were performed and a phenomenological fit function was employed. Consequently, in the case of ^65Ga, a mass uncertainty of 2.1 keV, corresponding to a relative precision of \(\delta m/m = 3.5 \times 10^{ - 8}\), was obtained and the mass value is in excellent agreement with the 2016 Atomic Mass Evaluation.

Abstract

The GSI projectile fragment separator FRS has demonstrated with many pioneering experiments the research potential of in-flight separators at relativistic energies. Although the present facility has contributed much to the progress in the field of nuclear structure physics, major improvements are desirable in the future. The characteristics of the proposed next-generation facility at GSI, the Super-FRS, will be presented and compared to other projects. The Super-FRS is a large-acceptance superconducting fragment separator followed by different experimental branches including a combination with a new storage-cooler ring system. This system consists of a collector ring (CR) and a new experimental storage ring (NESR) which allow precision mass and lifetime measurements as well as in-ring reaction studies. The NESR can be operated in combination with an electron ring to measure electron scattering with exotic nuclei. This electron heavy-ion collider will open up new fields for nuclear structure research.

Abstract

The fragment separator FRS at GSI was used as an energy-loss spectrometer to measure the longitudinal momentum distributions of {16,18}C fragments after one-neutron removal reactions in {17,19}C impinging on a carbon target at about 910 MeV/u. The distributions in the projectile frames are characterized by a FWHM of 141+-6 MeV/c for {16}C and 69+-3 MeV/c for {18}C. To accomplish the very demanding objectives, ROSINA will have unprecedented capabilities, including: very wide mass range from 1 amu to >300 amu; very high mass resolution (ability to resolve CO from N2 and 13C from 12CH); very wide dynamic range and high sensitivity; the ability to determine cometary gas and ion flow velocities and temperatures.

Abstract

A high-speed gas chromatographic system that produces peak widths of about 0.1 s has been coupled to a time-of-flight mass analyzer that can record up to several thousand single-shot mass spectra per second. The effect of the improved scan rate on the chromatographic resolution is demonstrated. The detection limits are in the low picogram range. The mass spectra are in good agreement with library spectra.

Abstract

We present direct mass measurements of the short-lived 44V, 48Mn, 41Ti and 45Cr nuclei. A novel experimental method has been used that is based on projectile fragmentation, in-flight separation of relativistic heavy ions with the fragment separator (FRS), and on isochronous operation of the experimental storage ring (ESR). A mass resolving power of 110 000 (FWHM) and an accuracy of about (100–500) keV has been achieved. The impact of the present results on the rp-process in X-ray burst models is discussed.

The masses of 204–210, 212Fr and 224–228Fr have been determined with direct on-line mass spectrometry. From previously known Qa values, the masses of 28 isotopes of Pa, Ac, At, Bi and Tl are deduced. All these experimental masses are compared with the current mass predictions.

Precise energy and angular distributions of 85.38 MeV/u Ar ions in solids are measured with the high-resolution spectrometer SPEG at GANIL. The nonuniformities of the target thickness were investigated with a laser-interferometric method. Stopping power, energy loss straggling, and angular scattering data are presented and compared with experimental data and theories.
