This study examines the conceptualization of risk behavior held by 26 Franco-Ontarian young adolescents (12-14 years of age) who participated in Lions Quest, a program specially designed to promote physical and mental health and to prevent drug and alcohol use. More specifically, it seeks to better understand the participating adolescents' conception of risk and protective factors in a linguistic minority context, with the eventual purpose to prevent or delay alcohol and drug use. A qualitative methodology mainly based on semi-structured interviews generated discussion around a variety of dimensions related to risky behaviors, extreme and dangerous risks, positive and negative risks, social and physical risks. The adolescents hardly mentioned drug, alcohol, and cigarette use. However, they were aware of the risks of consumption and dependence.

This article profiles Robert B. Forest, who edited the periodical "Datamation," during its spectacular heyday in the 1960s. When the author first met Bob Forest not long after he became editor in April 1963, the circumstances were less than congenial. The author had just left the information technology firm IBM Corp., to become vice president in charge of systems planning at Security First National Bank in Los Angeles, California and was astonished to open a copy of the periodical and discover material from the upcoming book in a feature article attributed to Norman Ream, then assistant controller of Lockheed Corp. Forest and the author reconstructed the circumstances leading to the plagiarism of the author's book material. During his last year at IBM, the author was on the faculty of the IBM Systems Research Institute and taught a course in system development. Almost everyone in the computer field during the 1960s and 1970s--especially those in the vendor community--viewed the periodical "Datamation," as "must" reading.

The spring phytoplankton composition has been investigated at a 50 m deep station off Plymouth in the English Channel for 6 years (1993–1999). The percentage of diatoms during the spring bloom was significantly correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation index. A similar relationship between phytoplankton and North Atlantic Oscillation has also been found in a Swedish lake, suggesting a possible link between atmospheric forcing and phytoplankton composition.
