Background: The scarcity and preciousness of plateau characteristic medicinal plants pose a significant challenge in obtaining sufficient quantities of experimental samples for quality evaluation. Insufficient sample sizes often lead to ambiguous and questionable quality assessments and suboptimal performance in pattern recognition. Shilajit, a popular Tibetan medicine, is harvested from high altitudes above 2000 m, making it difficult to obtain. Additionally, the complex geographical environment results in low uniformity of Shilajit quality. Methods: To address these challenges, this study employed a deep learning model, time vector quantization variational auto- encoder (TimeVQVAE), to generate data matrices based on chromatographic and spectral for different grades of Shilajit, thereby increasing in the amount of data. Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to identify three grades of Shilajit samples based on original, generated, and combined data. Results: Compared with the originally generated high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) data, the data generated by TimeVQVAE effectively preserved the chemical profile. In the test set, the average matrices for HPLC, FTIR, and combined data increased by 32.2%, 15.9%, and 23.0%, respectively. On the real test data, the PLS-DA model's classification accuracy initially reached a maximum of 0.7905. However, after incorporating TimeVQVAE-generated data, the accuracy significantly improved, reaching 0.9442 in the test set. Additionally, the PLS-DA model trained with the fused data showed enhanced stability. Conclusion: This study offers a novel and effective approach for researching medicinal materials with small sample sizes, and addresses the limitations of improving model performance through data augmentation strategies. Objectives: Planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling, essential for uniform alignment and directional beating of motile cilia, has been investigated in multiciliated epithelia. As a complex structure connecting the middle ear to the nasopharynx, the eustachian tube (ET) is important in the onset of ear–nose–throat diseases. However, PCP signaling, including the orientation that is important for ciliary motility and clearance function in the ET, has not been studied. We evaluated PCP in the ET epithelium. Study Design: Morphometric examination of the mouse ET. Methods: We performed electron microscopy to assess ciliary polarity in the mouse ET, along with immunohistochemical analysis of PCP protein localization in the ET epithelium. Results: We discovered PCP in the ET epithelium. Motile cilia were aligned in the same direction in individual and neighboring cells; this alignment manifested as ciliary polarity in multiciliated cells. Additionally, PCP proteins were asymmetrically localized between adjacent cells in the plane of the ET. Conclusions: The multiciliated ET epithelium exhibits polarization, suggesting novel structural features that may be critical for ET function. Large-scale group decision-making (LSGDM) involves aggregating the opinions of participating decision-makers into collective opinions and selecting optimal solutions, addressing challenges such as a large number of participants, significant scale, and a low consensus. In real-world scenarios of LSGDM, various challenges are often encountered due to factors such as fuzzy uncertainties in decision information, the large size of decision groups, and the diverse backgrounds of participants. This paper introduces a dual fine-tuning-based LSGDM method using an online review. Initially, the sentiment analysis is conducted on online review data, and the identified sentiment words are graded and quantified into a fuzzy data set to understand the emotional tendencies of the text. Then, the Louvain algorithm is used to cluster the decision-makers. Meanwhile, a method combining Euclidean distances with Wasserstein distances is introduced to accurately measure data similarities and improve clustering performances. During the consensus-reaching process (CRP), a two-stage approach is employed to adjust the scores: to begin with, by refining the scores of the decision representatives via minor-scale group adjustments to generate a score matrix. Then, by identifying the scores corresponding to the minimum consensus level in the matrix for adjustment. Subsequently, the final adjusted score matrix is integrated with the prospect–regret theory to derive the comprehensive brand scores and rankings. Ultimately, the practicality and efficiency of the proposed model are demonstrated using a case study focused on the purchase of solar lamps. In summary, not only does the model effectively extract the online review data and enhance decision efficiency via clustering, but the dual fine-tuning mechanism in the model to improve consensus attainment also reduces the number of adjustment rounds and avoids multiple cycles without achieving the consensus. C. nudiflora is notably rich in flavonoids and phenylethanoid glycosides, making it a significant natural source of antioxidants. We examined the effects of C. nudiflora aqueous extract (CNE) on growth performance, antioxidant function, immunity, intestinal barrier function, nutrient transporters, and microbiota of broilers. A total of 360 one-day-old broilers were randomly assigned to four treatment groups: a basal diet with 0 (control, CON), 300 mg/kg (CNEL), 500 mg/kg (CNEM), and 700 mg/kg (CNEH) CNE for 42 days. CNEL and CNEM groups quadratically increased body weight and average daily gain but decreased feed-to-gain ratios during the starter and whole phases. Regarding the immune response of broilers, CNE treatment linearly down-regulated jejunal myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) expression and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interferon-γ expression in the liver (d 21), while decreasing jejunal IL-1β expression and the concentration of serum tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 (d 42). The CNEM and CNEH groups had lower MyD88 and nuclear factor kappa B expression in the liver (d 21) compared to the CON group. Broilers in the CNEL and CNEM groups had higher spleen index and thymus index (d 21) and interleukin-10 expression from the liver and jejunal mucosa (d 42) than that in the CON group. For the antioxidant capacity of broilers, CNE treatment linearly decreased the content of malonaldehyde and increased the activity of total antioxidant capacity in serum (d 42). CNEM and CNEH groups linearly increased the activity of superoxide dismutase in serum and heme oxygenase-1 expression in the liver, while increasing the activity of glutathione peroxidase in serum, jejunal nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 expression, and NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1 expression in the liver (d 42). As for the growth hormone of broilers, CNEM group increased the level of serum insulin-like growth factor 1 and up-regulated jejunal glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) expression (d 21). Broilers in the CNEM and CNEH groups had higher jejunal GLP-2 expression and growth hormone (GH) expression in the liver and the level of serum GH (d 42) than that in the CON group. Additionally, the villus height and jejunal Occludin and Claudin-1 expression in the CNEM group increased. CNE-containing diets resulted in a linear increase in the expression of jejunal zonula occluden-1 (d 21), villus height to crypt depth ratio, jejunal Occludin, excitatory amino acid transporters-3, and peptide-transporter 1 (d 42). The regulation of Oscillospira, Ruminococcaceae_Ruminococcus, and Butyricicoccus genera indicated that CNEH altered the composition of the cecal microbiota. In general, supplementing broilers with C. nudiflora aqueous extract could boost hormones, immune and antioxidant function, and gut health, improving their growth performance. In vitro, drug assessment holds tremendous potential to success in novel drug development and precision medicine. Traditional techniques for drug assessment, however, face remarkable challenges to achieve high speed, as limited by incubation‐based drug delivery (>several hours) and cell viability measurements (>1 d), which significantly compromise the efficacy in clinical trials. In this work, a nano‐electroporation‐DNA tensioner platform is reported that shortens the time of drug delivery to less than 3 s, and that of cellular mechanical force analysis to 30 min. The platform adopts a nanochannel structure to localize a safe electric field for cell perforation, while enhancing delivery speed by 103 times for intracellular delivery, as compared to molecular diffusion in coculture methods. The platform is further equipped with a DNA tensioner to detect cellular mechanical force for quantifying cell viability after drug treatment. Systematic head‐to‐head comparison, by analyzing FDA (food and drug administration)‐approved drugs (paclitaxel, doxorubicin), demonstrated the platform with high speed, efficiency, and safety, showing a simple yet powerful tool for clinical drug screening and development. Simple Summary: Under modern intensive farming conditions, high-intensity production increases liver stress in laying hens. Liver damage also leads to decreased productivity and increased mortality in laying hens. As a byproduct of perilla seed oil, perilla seed meal has a certain anti-stress effect. In this experiment, a small amount of perilla seed meal was added to the diet. The results showed that perilla seed meal had a positive impact on antioxidant capacity, liver lipid metabolism and egg quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of adding perilla seed meal (PSM) to the diet on reproductive performance, egg quality, yolk fatty acids, antioxidant capacity and liver lipid metabolism in breeding hens. A total of 192 31-week-old yellow-feathered hens were randomly divided into 4 treatments with 6 replicates of 8 birds for 8 weeks. The chickens were fed a typical corn–soybean meal diet containing 0% (control), 0.3%, 0.6%, and 1% PSM. The results showed that PSM can change the productivity of laying hens. Adding 0.6% PSM to the feed reduced the mortality rate of chickens. Adding 1% PSM improved the fertilization rate and hatching rate of chickens. Regarding egg quality, the albumen height and Haugh unit were improved in the 0.6% PSM group. The content of MUFAs and PUFAs in the egg yolk was increased in all the PSM groups, while SFAs were only increased in the 0.6% PSM group. Among the indicators related to lipid metabolism, serum GLU decreased in all the PSM groups. The 0.6% PSM group had a reduction in serum and liver TG, as well as reductions in serum LDL-C and ALT. The same results were observed for the abdominal fat percentage in the 0.6% PSM group. Liver lipid metabolism-associated gene expression of FAS and LXRα was decreased in all the PSM groups, and the mRNA expression of ACC and SREBP-1c was significantly reduced in the 0.6% PSM group. HE staining showed that the vacuoles in the liver tissue gradually decreased with increasing PSM doses, especially the 1% PSM dose. Lipid droplets with a similar trend were observed using Oil Red O staining. In the results of the antioxidant capacity test, the serum T-AOC was increased in the 0.6% and 1% PSM groups, and the SOD in both the serum and liver was significantly increased in all the PSM groups. The expression of antioxidant-related genes such as Nrf2, NQO-1, HO-1, CAT and GSH-Px was significantly upregulated in the 1% PSM group. In conclusion, the PSM diet improved the lipid metabolism and antioxidant capacity of breeding hens. PSM reduces mortality and improves fertilization and hatchability in the late laying period of chickens, resulting in greater benefits. Corrosion behaviour of carbon steel (CS) exposed in the tidal zone of Beibu Gulf was investigated by experimental method. Q235 CS specimens were designed and exposed for 12 months. The corrosion mechanism of CS was characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD). Results show that the corrosion performance of CS can be verified by the formula D = atn. The corrosion products are mainly composed of α-FeOOH, γ-FeOOH, β-FeOOH, Fe3O4 and γ-Fe2O3. Significantly, Cl– is an intermediate in the corrosion process and promotes the formation of the characteristic product β-FeOOH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The security issue of human health is faced with dispiriting threats from multidrug-resistant bacteria infections induced by the abuse and misuse of antibiotics. Over decades, the antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) hold great promise as a viable alternative to treatment with antibiotics due to their peculiar antimicrobial mechanisms of action, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, lower drug residue, and ease of synthesis and modification. However, they universally express a series of disadvantages that hinder their potential application in the biomedical field (e.g., low bioavailability, poor protease resistance, and high cytotoxicity) and extremely waste the abundant resources of AMP database discovered over the decades. For all these reasons, the nanostructured antimicrobial peptides (Ns-AMPs), based on a variety of nanosystem modification, have made up for the deficiencies and pushed the development of novel AMP-based antimicrobial therapies. In this review, we provide an overview of the advantages of Ns-AMPs in improving therapeutic efficacy and biological stability, reducing side effects, and gaining the effect of organic targeting and drug controlled release. Then the different material categories of Ns-AMPs are described, including inorganic material nanosystems containing AMPs, organic material nanosystems containing AMPs, and self-assembled AMPs. Additionally, this review focuses on the Ns-AMPs for the effect of biological activities, with emphasis on antimicrobial activity, biosecurity, and biological stability. The "state-of-the-art" antimicrobial modes of Ns-AMPs, including controlled release of AMPs under a specific environment or intrinsic antimicrobial properties of Ns-AMPs, are also explicated. Amphipathicity has traditionally been considered to be essential for the de novo design or systematic optimization of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). However, the current research methods to study the relationship between amphiphilicity and antimicrobial activity are inappropriate, because the key parameters (hydrophobicity, positive charge, etc.) and secondary structure of AMPs are changed. To systematically and accurately study the effects of amphiphilicity on antimicrobial properties of AMPs, we designed parallel series of AMPs with a different order of amino acids in a sequence composed only of Arg and either Trp (WR series) or Leu (LR series), under conditions in which other vital parameters were fixed. Furthermore, based on the WR and LR peptides that can form stable amphiphilic β-sheet structures in the anionic membrane-mimetic environment, we found that high β-sheet amphipathic was accompanied by strong antimicrobial activity. Of such peptides, W5 ([RW]4W) and L5 ([RL]4L) with a nicely amphipathic β-sheet structure possessed the optimal therapeutic index. W5 and L5 also exhibited high stability in vitro and a potent membrane-disruptive mechanism. These results suggest that the alternate arrangement of hydrophobic and hydrophilic residues to form a stable amphipathic β-sheet structure is an essential factor that significantly affects the antimicrobial properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium (PQQ·Na2) supplementation on the reproductive performance and intestinal barrier functions of gestating and lactating female Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats and their offspring. Dietary supplementation with PQQ·Na2 increased the number of implanted embryos per litter during gestation and lactation at GD 20 and increased the number of viable fetuses per litter, and the weight of uterine horns with fetuses increased at 1 d of newborn. The mRNA expression levels of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx2), superoxide dismutase (SOD1), solute carrier family 2 member 1 (Slc2a1) and solute carrier family 2 member 3 (Slc2a3) in the placenta were increased with dietary PQQ·Na2 supplementation. Dietary supplementation with PQQ·Na2 in gestating and lactating rats increased the CAT, SOD and GPx activities of the jejunal mucosa of weaned rats on PD 21. Dietary supplementation with PQQ·Na2 in female rats affected the expression of tight junction proteins (claudin, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and occludin) in the jejunal mucosa of their offspring by increasing the expression of ZO-1 mRNA in the expression of ZO-1 and claudin mRNA in the jejunal mucosa of weaned rats on PD 21. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with PQQ·Na2 in gestating and lactating female rats had positive effects on their reproductive performance and on the intestinal barrier of weaned rats. Significance: Plantar warts, benign lesions on the soles of the feet, are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) infecting keratinocytes. Complete eradication of these warts is challenging, often leading to recurrences. This study evaluates the combined clinical efficacy of topical 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) photodynamic therapy (PDT) and fractional carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) laser treatment for recalcitrant plantar warts., Approach: Data from 10 patients with recalcitrant plantar warts were analyzed. Initially, thickened hyperkeratotic tissue was removed using a super-pulsed CO 2 laser. This was followed by fractional laser application, after which a 20% 5-ALA cream was applied occlusively for 4 hours. Patients then received He-Ne laser irradiation for 30 minutes at an energy density of 100 mW/cm², with treatments spaced 4 weeks apart., Results: The study included 10 participants aged 24 to 53 years (mean age: 33.4 ± 8.09 years). In total, 40 lesions were treated across 1 to 9 PDT sessions, with an average of 5.2 ± 2.86 sessions per patient. Complete clearance was achieved in 3 patients (30%), 4 patients (40%) showed an excellent response (≥80% improvement), while 2 patients had a partial response. One patient (10%) showed <50% improvement. The overall clearance rate was 70% (28 out of 40 lesions). Aside from temporary pain during the procedure and mild erythema post-treatment, one patient developed localized proliferative scarring. Background: Myopia is a significant public health problem across the globe. This study aimed to examine the regional disparity in prevalence and correlated factors of myopia in children and adolescents in two typical regions, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (Gannan Prefecture for short, a Tibetan residential area) and Wuwei City (a Han residential area) in Gansu Province, China, and to provide a reference for the prevention and control of regional myopia., Methods: The study was a cross-sectional study of children and adolescents in Gansu Province, China. A total of 6,187 (Wuwei City: 3,266, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture: 2,921) students were selected by stratified cluster sampling. Eye examinations and questionnaires were administered to the participants. Myopia is defined as a condition in which the spherical equivalent refractive error of an eye is less than or equal to -0.50 D when ocular accommodation is relaxed. The χ 2 test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the correlated factors of myopia., Results: The myopia rate of 6,187 students was 71.4%, and students had a higher rate of myopia (77.5%) in Wuwei City compared to Gannan Prefecture (64.6%) ( p  < 0.001). The results of multivariate analysis in Wuwei City showed that girls (odds ratio ( OR ) = 1.325), junior students ( OR  = 2.542), senior students( OR  = 4.605), distance between eyes and book less than one foot ( OR  = 1.291), and parents with myopia (one, OR  = 2.437; two, OR  = 4.453) had higher risks of myopia (all, p  < 0.05). For Gannan Prefecture, girls ( OR  = 1.477), senior students ( OR  = 1.537), daily time spent doing homework ≥2 h (OR = 1.420), the distance between eyes and book less than one foot ( OR  = 1.205), mean time continuous eye use (0.25-<0.5 h, OR  = 1.345, 0.5-<1 h, OR  = 1.317, ≥1 h, OR  = 1.313), average daily sleep duration <8 h ( OR  = 1.399), and parents with myopia (one, OR  = 1.852; two, OR  = 2.913) had higher risks of myopia (all, p  < 0.05)., Conclusion: The prevalence of myopia is at a relatively high level in Gansu Province. With the increasing demand for communication capacity, all-optical regeneration of multimode signals is a helpful technology of network nodes and optical signal processors. However, the difficulty of regenerating signal in higher-order modes hinders the practical application of multimode all-optical regenerators. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate the 40 Gb/s all-optical regeneration of NRZ-OOK signal in TE0 and TE1 modes via four-wave mixing (FWM) in the low-loss silicon-based nanowaveguide. By optimizing the parameters of waveguide section to enhance FWM conversion efficiency of two modes, and introducing Euler bending to reduce crosstalk between modes, the transmission loss of the silicon waveguide is 0.3 dB/cm, and the FWM conversion efficiency of the multimode regenerator is as high as -9.6 dB (TE0) and -13.0 dB (TE1). Both modes achieve extinction ratio enhancement of about 6 dB after regeneration. This silicon-based all-optical regenerator has great application potential in all-optical signal processing systems.

Photon pairs generated by employing spontaneous nonlinear effects in microresonators are critically essential for integrated optical quantum information technologies, such as quantum computation and quantum cryptography. Microresonators featuring high-quality (Q) factors can offer simple yet power-efficient means to generate photon pairs, thanks to the intracavity field enhancement. In microresonators, it is known that the photon-pair generation rate (PGR) is roughly proportional to the cubic power of the Q factor. However, the upper limit on PGR is also set by the Q factor: a higher Q factor brings a longer photon lifetime, which in turn leads to a lower repetition rate allowing for photon flow emitted from the microresonator, constrained by the Fourier-transform limit. Exceeding this limit will result in the overlap of photon wave packets in the time domain, thus degrading the quantum character of single-photon light beams. To push the limit of PGR in a single resonator, we propose a method by harnessing the resonance linewidth-manipulated microresonators to improve the maximum achievable photon repetition rate while keeping the power efficiency. The maximum achievable PGR and power efficiency are thus balanced by leveraging the combination of low and high-Q resonances.

The current study focused on the effects of Shenling Baizhu San (SLBZS) fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum ( L . plantarum ) on gut microbiota, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal barrier function of yellow-plumed broilers. Our results showed that the content of ginsenoside Rb1 was the highest when SLBZS were inoculated with 3% L . plantarum and fermented at 28°C for 24 h. One-day-old male broilers were divided into five treatment groups. Treatment consisted of a basal diet as a control (Con), 0.1% unfermented SLBZS (U-SLBZS), 0.05% fermented SLBZS (F-SLBZS-L), 0.1% fermented SLBZS (F-SLBZS-M), and 0.2% fermented SLBZS (F-SLBZS-H). On days 14, 28, and 42, six chickens from each group were randomly selected for blood collection and tissue sampling. The results showed that the addition of 0.1% fermented SLBZS could significantly increase average daily feed intake (ADFI) and average daily gain (ADG), and decrease feed conversion ratio (FCR) of broilers. The addition of 0.1 and 0.2% fermented SLBZS significantly increased the lymphoid organ index of broilers on day 28 and 42. The addition of 0.1 and 0.2% fermented SLBZS could improve the antioxidant capacity of broilers. Moreover, the addition of 0.1 and 0.2% fermented SLBZS could significantly increase the villus height/crypt depth of the ileum, and significantly increase the expression of tight junction. In addition, fermentation of SLBZS increase the abundance of Coprococcus, Bifidobacterium and Bilophila in the gut of broilers.
