Vector mosquitoes are well‐adapted to habitats in urban areas, including belowground infrastructure such as stormwater systems. As a major source of larval habitat in population centers, control of larval populations in stormwater catch basins is an important tool for control of vector‐borne disease. Larval development and adult phenotypes driving vectorial capacity in mosquitoes are modulated by the larval gut microbiota, which is recruited from the aquatic environment in which larvae develop. Laboratory studies have quantified microbe‐mediated impacts on individual mosquito phenotypes, but more work is needed to characterise how microbiota variation shapes population‐level outcomes. Here, we evaluated the relationship between habitat microbiota variation and mosquito population dynamics by simultaneously characterising microbiota diversity, water quality, and mosquito productivity in a network of stormwater catch basins in the Chicago metropolitan area. High throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons from water samples collected from 60 basins over an entire mosquito breeding season detected highly diverse bacterial communities that varied with measures of water quality and over time. In situ measurements of mosquito abundance in the same basins further varied by microbiota composition and the relative abundance of specific bacterial taxa. Altogether, these results illustrate the importance of habitat microbiota in shaping ecological processes that affect mosquito populations. They also lay the foundation for future studies to characterise the mechanisms by which specific bacterial taxa impact individual and population‐level phenotypes related to mosquito vectorial capacity. During June through September 2018, the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District evaluated a quality control protocol for larvicide-treated catch basins that allowed for comparisons of larvicides with different modes of action. Results suggest that when applied at a rate of 2 tablespoons (approximately 20 g of product) per basin, these larvicides (VectoLex® FG Lysinibacillus sphaericus, Natular™ G30 Spinosad, and Altosid® Pellets Methoprene) could reduce the need for retreatment for up to 4 wk or longer. Using this same protocol, Spheratax® SPH (50G) L. sphaericus was applied to a subset of approximately 900 basins and met the threshold for retreatment 1.1 wk postapplication. ABSTRACT During June to September 2017, 7 mosquito control programs in the midwestern United States evaluated a total of 9 catch basin larvicide formulations using similar protocols. Treated basins were monitored among study sites to observe when larvicides failed to control mosquitoes in 25% or more basins within a site. Overall, when monitoring occurred within the maximum label duration of the larvicides, sites treated with a single larvicide tablet or briquet surpassed the 25% fail threshold more often than pellet and granular larvicide formulations. In 438 of the study basins, the depth from sump bottom to catch basin lid was measured. In basins that were deeper than 5 ft (1.5 m), larvicides failed to control mosquitoes significantly more often than those 5 ft or shallower. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effectiveness in controlling mosquito larvae in stormwater catch basins in the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (northeastern Cook County, IL) was determined for 2 extended-duration larvicides indicating up to 180 days of control on their labels (Natular™ XRT, FourStar® Briquet) and 3 larvicides indicating up to 30 days of control (Natular™ T30, Natular™ G30, and VectoLex® FG). Over the course of the 26-wk study, catch basins receiving the extended-release products were treated twice (an initial treatment in early April followed by a re-treatment after 16 wk), and catch basins receiving the shorter-duration products were treated every 28 days, with the 1st treatment occurring during the 1st week in April. Control in an individual catch basin was considered to have failed if late-stage larvae or pupae were found in 2-dip samples taken from the catch basin. Control for a treatment was considered to have failed if >25% of catch basins treated with the product failed at a given time period posttreatment. All of the products evaluated in the study demonstrated some degree of control; however, the Natular XRT-, FourStar Briquet-, and Natular T30-treated basins rarely achieved the effectiveness threshold of ≤25% of catch basins failing. By comparison, basins treated with Natular G30 were below that threshold for 3 of 4 wk every treatment round and VectoLex® FG was consistently below that threshold for all 4 wk posttreatment for every treatment round. Compared with untreated catch basins, the total season pupal production was reduced by approximately 48% in the Natular XRT-, FourStar Briquet-, and Natular T30-treated basins, and by 87% and 99% in the Natular G30- and VectoLex FG-treated basins, respectively. Operational quality control observations indicated that effective control (i.e., ≤25% of catch basins failing) ranged from 3 to 12 wk posttreatment for catch basins treated with Natular XRT and from 5 to 9 wk with VectoLex FG, and that there was considerable geographic variation in the duration of effectiveness. The results indicate that 30-day re-treatments with granular formulations in difficult-to-control areas may provide a more cost-effective outcome than using 1 or 2 applications of extended-duration larvicides. From June to September, 2016, 100 catch basins in eight parking areas were monitored weekly for the presence of mosquito pupae in the operational area of the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) located just north of Chicago, IL, U.S.A. Weekly results from these basins were compared to weekly samples taken from residential street catch basins, the most common type of catch basin treated seasonally by the NSMAD with larvicides. Over the 17 study weeks, residential street basins had a mean rate of productivity (pupae per basin-visit) 12 times that of parking area catch basins. The two parking area sites with the highest mean rate of productivity were associated with county forest preserves. Productivity in both street and parking area basins was positively associated with the presence of three or more deciduous trees within 20 m of basins and if they were located directly adjacent to curbs. Alternatively, productivity was negatively associated with the proportion of impervious surface within 10 m of basins and weekly rainfall. Stormwater catch basins are commonly treated with larvicides by mosquito control agencies to reduce local populations of mosquito species capable of transmitting West Nile virus. Recent evidence suggests that extended-release larvicides formulated to last up to 180 days in catch basins may not be effective in some basins due to chronic flushing, rapid dissolution, or burying of treatment in sump debris. To investigate if increasing the number of applications could improve effectiveness, a small study was performed over 13 weeks in 2015 to evaluate two extended-release larvicides (Natular™ XRT 180-day tablets and Natular™ T30 30-day tablets) and a larvicide oil (CocoBear™). Over the course of 13 weeks, three groups of eight basins were monitored for mosquitoes, each group receiving Natular™ XRT, Natular™ T30, or CocoBear™ larvicides. All basins received a single application at the beginning of the study period. Once mosquitoes in a basin surpassed the treatment threshold during weekly monitoring, an additional application of the associated larvicide was given to that basin. The number of applications during the study period ranged from 1 to 10 for CocoBear™ basins, 1 to 7 forT30 basins, and 2 to 8 for XRT basins. Overall, the average number of applications and the cost of larvicide per basin were 4.4 applications at $0.66 per CocoBear™ basin, 4.4 applications at $6.26 per T30 basin, and 4 applications at $16.56 per XRT basin. Basins treated with XRT and T30 needed reapplications more often than expected, yet were no more effective than CocoBear™, suggesting that increasing the frequency of application of these larvicide formulations may not provide increased mosquito reduction in some basins. The doubly labeled water (DLW) method is used to measure free-living energy expenditure in humans. Inherent to this technique is the assumption that natural abundances of stable isotopes ²H and 18O in body water remain constant over the course of the measurement period and after elimination of the loading dose of DLW will return to the same predose level. To determine variability in the natural abundances of ²H and 18O in humans living in a region with seasonal shifts in rain patterns and sources of drinking water, over the course of 12 mo we collected weekly urine samples from four individuals living in southwest Nigeria as well as samples of their drinking water. From ongoing regional studies of hypertension, obesity, and energy expenditure, we estimated average water turnover rate, urine volumes, and sodium and potassium excretion. Results suggest that ²H and 18O in urine, mean concentrations of urinary sodium and potassium, urine volume, and total body turnover differed significantly from dry to rainy season. Additionally, seasonal weather variables (mean monthly maximum temperatures, total monthly rainfall, and minimum relative humidity) were all significantly associated with natural abundances in urine. No seasonal difference was observed in drinking water samples. Findings suggest that natural abundances in urine may not remain constant as assumed, and studies incorporating DLW measurements across the transition of seasons should interpret results with caution unless appropriate doses of the tracers are used. Gravid traps are commonly used by mosquito control agencies to collect local populations of Culex pipiens, which are then tested for the presence of West Nile virus. Culex pipiens adults disperse a relatively short distance (~2.5 km) from their breeding site, so it can be challenging to position a sufficient number of gravid traps to accurately monitor these mosquitoes in large urban areas. As placement of these traps is often limited to locations out of public?view, the potential for placing these traps belowground in commonly found storm-water catch basins was investigated. We compared the numbers of mosquitoes isolated in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gravid traps placed aboveground with various types of CDC gravid traps placed in nearby catch basins. We found that the gravid traps placed in catch basins collected significantly fewer Culex pipiens females as compared to the aboveground traps. However, the 2 types of catch basin traps continued to function and collect mosquitoes despite heavy rainfall and runoff, demonstrating their utility for sample collection in an urban setting. In the northeastern part of the greater Chicago metropolitan area, the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) treats approximately 50,000 catch basins each season with larvicide tablets as part of its effort to reduce local populations of the West Nile virus (WNV) vector Culex pipiens. During the 2014 season, an NSMAD technician monitored a subset of 60-195 basins weekly for 18 weeks among the communities of the District for the presence of mosquitoes. Monitoring found no clear evidence in the reduction of mosquitoes with the use of larvicides, and visual inspections of 211 larvicide-treated basins found that the majority (162, 76.8%) were missing tablets 1-17 weeks after applications. his loss of treatment may be due to the rapid dissolution or lushing of larvicides and would help explain why the larvicide appeared to be ineffective. In the northern suburbs of Chicago, stormwater catch basins are the primary source of vector mosquitoes targeted by the local mosquito abatement district, and therefore effective catch basin larvicides are needed. From June to September 2011, NatularTM XRT was applied at label rate to a cluster of 20 catch basins and compared to a cluster of 20 untreated basins all within a small 0.21 km2 area of catch basins known historically to have high levels of mosquitoes. All monitored basins held immature stages of mosquitoes at least once; however, significantly fewer immatures overall were observed from Natular-treated basins than in untreated basins during 14 wk of monitoring. During the study a portion of Natular-treated catch basins was cleaned as part of scheduled maintenance, and this appeared to remove both the larvicide and any control effects. Better timing of catch basin maintenance events is suggested, particularly if, as the results of this study suggest, a single larvicide treatment may be effective for an entire season. Water samples from 11 belowground stormwater treatment Best Management Practices (BMPs) were evaluated for their capacity to support rapid development of the West Nile virus (WNV) mosquito vector, Culex quinquefasciatus. The observed minimum development time from egg to pupa ranged from six to over 30 days. Concentrations of potential food resources (total suspended solids and the particulate organic matter in water samples) were significantly correlated to development times. In addition, the rate of immature mosquito development was both site-dependent and variable in time, suggesting that factors favorable to rapid development were strongly influenced by watershed characteristics and seasonal changes in temperature. Measured temperatures in belowground BMPs suggest that these structures may remain amenable to WNV virus activity longer each year than sites aboveground. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because it is often logistically impossible to monitor all catch basins within an operational area, local mosquito control programs will preemptively treat catch basins with larvicides each season. However, these larvicides can, ostensibly, be considered water quality pollutants. To experimentally reduce the use of larvicides toward improving water quality, 30 basins within a small 0.7-km2 residential area were monitored weekly for the presence of larvae and pupae for 14 wk in the summer of 2013. Once a basin was found to reach a threshold of 12 mosquitoes per dip sample, it received a FourStar® Briquet (a 180-day briquet formulation of 6% Bacillus sphaericus and 1% B. thuringiensis israelensis). Each week a FourStar-treated basin surpassed this threshold, it was treated with an application of CocoBear™ oil (10% mineral oil). By the end of trials, all but one basin received a briquet and 13 required at least 4 treatments of CocoBear, suggesting that preemptive treatment is appropriate for the study area. The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District applies extended release larvicides including methoprene-based Altosid® XR Extended Residual Briquets to approximately 40,000 catch basins in the southern half of the District's operational area at the beginning of each season. Treatments begin in May and typically again 9 to 10 wk later when larvicide efficacy appears to wane. In 2013 spinosad-based Natular™ XRT tablets were applied to basins, and a subset were monitored for larvae and pupae weekly with a standard dipper. When setting the threshold for retreatment as 12 juveniles per dip sample it was observed that basins required a second application 9 wk after the initial application, a time period similar to Altosid despite utilizing a different active ingredient. Average counts of weekly larval samples appeared to be positively associated with average numbers of Culex pipiens collected the following week in a gravid trap located among catch basins, highlighting the importance of basins as sources of these mosquitoes. Stormwater catch basins are the primary source of mosquitoes targeted by the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District, in the northern suburbs of Chicago. During the 2nd week of monitoring, Natular™ XRT tablets (6.25% spinosad) were applied to northernmost cluster and FourStar™ Briquets (6% Bacillus sphaericus, 1% Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) were applied to the southernmost cluster; the remaining middle cluster was kept untreated. Following 15 wk of monitoring in 20 basins in each cluster, both Natular and FourStar reduced immature numbers in treated catch basins for 8 consecutive weeks. The suspected endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) is associated with the manufacture, distribution, and use of epoxy resins and polycar-bonate plastics; thus, studies of this compound have focused primarily on urban areas in developed countries. This small study investigating urinary BPA of 109 people was conducted in the urban United States, urban Jamaica, and rural Ghana. Additionally, local drinking and surface water samples were col-lected and analyzed from areas near study participants. Levels of BPA in both urine and water were comparable among all three sites. Thus, future studies of BPA should consider expanding investigations to rural areas not typically associated with the compound. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the seasonal breeding of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes in belowground stormwater treatment facilities in southern California. The egg rafts of these mosquitoes where gathered through bucket ovitraps floated in permanent water sumps, wherein each of them was removed and kept in a small cup to prove that the larvae are Culex quinquefasciatus. Results of the study show that 90 percent of the egg rafts were gathered despite the stagnant water being present in the treatment facilities.

Effectiveness in controlling mosquitoes in storm water catch basins in the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (northeastern Cook County, Illinois) was determined for 3 formulations of methoprene-based larvicides (Altosid XR 150-day Briquets, Altosid 30-day Pellets, Altosid 30-day Granules) in 2017 using a pass/fail evaluation criterion, in which emergence of a single adult from pupae collected from the basin constituted a control failure. Over the course of the 16-week study, basins receiving the 150-day briquets were treated once and basins receiving the pellet and granular formulations were treated every 4 weeks, with the first treatment occurring during the last week of May. Untreated basins were also observed for comparison with the treated basins. Over the course of the study, adult mosquitoes emerged from pupae collected in 94.2% of the untreated basins that contained pupae. All of the formulations evaluated in the study demonstrated some degree of control compared with the untreated basins, with pupae successfully emerging as adults in 64.6%, 55.5%, and 21.8% of samples from 150-day briquet, 30-day tablet, and 30-day pellet–treated basins that contained pupae, respectively. Pellets reapplied every 28 days provided significantly more effective control than the other formulations. The simple pass/fail criterion for evaluating control effectiveness proved to be a useful procedure for comparing effectiveness to untreated basins and among treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From 2021 to 2024, the number of pupae found in storm sewer catch basins in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago were assessed as part of routine quality control and improvement efforts. Over the course of these 4 yr, pupae were collected at least once during all calendar months, allowing for some insight into monthly mosquito production in catch basins. Thus, the intent of this study was to use those data to describe the number of pupae found in these structures across calendar months. In total, 1,993 unique catch basins were sampled. Pupae were found during the months of April through December, with the highest levels seen during June through November. Results suggest that basins may remain productive a month or more after local abatement districts end their routine Culex adult surveillance with gravid traps in late September and early October each year. Over the course of three years, 200 ft to 0.75 mi (60 m to 1.2 km) sections of 3 larger (>6 ft [1.8 m] diam) belowground storm sewer conveyance pipes in the northwestern Chicago suburbs were inspected for the presence of adult mosquitoes. Culex mosquitoes were by far the most common (555 of 556 [99.8%] total mosquitoes) collected within pipes during all four meteorological seasons (i.e. during months of October, January, May, August). West Nile virus remains the leading cause of arboviral neuroinvasive disease in the United States, despite extensive efforts to control the mosquito vectors involved in transmission. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of Altosid SR-20 (active ingredient, S-methoprene 20%) larvicide applications using truck-mounted ultra-low volume (ULV) dispersal equipment to target Culex pipiens Linnaeus (Diptera: Culicidae) and Cx. restuans (Theobald)larvae. A combination of emergence bioassays, open-field measurements of deposited S-methoprene and spray distribution using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and assessments of adult Culex spp. populations in response to applications were conducted over the summer of 2020 within the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (IL, USA). Open-field applications revealed that dispersed Altosid SR-20 using ULV equipment was effective (75% emergence inhibition in susceptible lab strain Cx. pipiens larvae) up to 53 m. In suburban neighborhood applications, we found that S-methoprene deposition and larval emergence inhibition (EI) in front yards did not differ significantly from backyards. An overall EI of 46% and 28% were observed for laboratory strain Cx. pipiens and wild Cx. restuans larvae respectively, and both had an EI significantly higher than the untreated control group. The EI of exposed wild Cx. pipiens larvae did not differ from the untreated controls, suggesting an increased tolerance to S-methoprene. No difference in abundance of gravid or host-seeking adult Culex spp. post-application was detected between treated and untreated sites. These results document the ability of area-wide application to distribute S-methoprene, but this strategy will need further modifications and evaluation for Culex spp. management., (© The Author(s) 2022. To increase the effectiveness of adult mosquito control, more frequent ultra-low volume (ULV) applications have been suggested. In the Chicago area, weather may be a limiting factor to more frequent applications. To investigate this, ULV adulticidal application dates from the Northwest Mosquito Abatement District during June 2011 to September 2020 were compared to historical weather data-wind and rain patterns to determine optimum conditions for conducting ULV treatments. During the 85 applications performed during 2011-20, there would have been an opportunity, based on weather conditions, for an additional consecutive night for about half (48.2%) of the time. These opportunities diminished with each additional application. Over the course of 2019 and 2020, 7 larvicide formulations for use in catch basins were evaluated using a standardized pass/fail protocol. A comparison between 1- and 2-pouch doses of VectoLex® water-soluble pouches (WSP; 10 g per pouch) and 20 g of VectoLex FG (loose granules) suggests that the WSP formulation may have a shorter duration than the FG formulation. Results also suggest that 20 g doses of each of 2 larvicides, Duplex™-G and Sumilarv® 0.5G, may have a minimum effective duration in basins for approximately 40 days. A 20 g dose of Altosid® XR-G and a single briquet Altosid XR each had an observed minimum effective duration of 20 days. Sustain MBG had an observed duration of only 7 wk posttreatment. These observations provide evidence that, in some locations, 20 g granular applications may have a longer effective duration than a single briquet. Since the mid-1990s, the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) has applied extended-release formulations of mosquito larvicides to approximately 50,000 catch basins in the suburbs north of Chicago, IL, USA. This is performed as part of NSMAD's efforts to reduce local populations of the West Nile virus vector, Culex pipiens. Analyses from NSMAD's monitoring of larvicide-treated basins throughout the District over the 2014 and 2015 seasons suggest that larvicides intended to provide extended durations of control (30-180 days) failed to provide control for the maximum duration specified on the product label in approximately 25% of the District's basins. For larvicides designed to last up to 180 days (or about 26 weeks), failures were found at 1-15 weeks after treatment with most found at five weeks posttreatment. For larvicides formulated to last up to 30 days, failures were found at one to four weeks after applications with most found at three weeks posttreatment. The highest percentages of failing basins (ie, containing late-stage mosquito larvae or pupae during the specified product effectiveness period) were found in communities on the eastern side of the District, bordering Lake Michigan. As the larvicides appeared to function properly in the majority of monitored basins, it appears that the failures likely resulted from basin-specific physical factors (ie, basin volume, sediment content, and hydrology) that cause either product removal or a reduction in the concentration of the larvicide's active ingredient below the effective levels in these basins.
