Abstract

Featured Application: The following topics are assessed in this study: (1) microbial disturbance due to dissolved organic carbon secreted from T. striata; (2) risk of large-scale microalgae cultivation to marine environment; (3) relationship between bacteria and phytoplankton by dissolved organic carbon; (4) ecosystem impact assessment through mesocosm study. The green alga Tetraselmisstriata is regarded as a suitable candidate microalga for bio-diesel production. Recently, T. striata was cultured near Yeonghueung Island, Korea, in a "marine culturing field"; however, its environmental impacts are not yet studied. We estimated the amount of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) released from T. striata cultivation in the marine culturing field, and we investigated the changes in bacterial composition. Then, we designed and installed a mesocosm for further understanding. From the mesocosm results, the DOC released from the cultivation of T. striata led to changes in bacterial communities, disturbance of the microbial food web structure, rapid depletion of nutrients, and a decrease in dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH. Our novel work demonstrates that large amounts of DOC secreted by large-scale microalgal cultures such as that of T. striata can potentially have a significant impact on the structure and function of the surrounding microbial ecosystem. Abstract

We report the optical properties of ZnO/ZnMgO multiple quantum well (MQW) structures with different well widths grown on ZnO substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra show MQW emissions at 3.387 and 3.369 eV for the ZnO/ZnMgO MQW samples with well widths of 2 and 5 nm, respectively, due to the quantum confinement effect. Time-resolved PL results show an efficient photogenerated carrier transfer from the barrier to the MQWs, which leads to an increased intensity ratio of the well to barrier emissions for the ZnO/ZnMgO MQW sample with the wider well width. Abstract

The structural and optical properties of coupled, multiquantum-well structures, consisting of GaN(10 Å)/Al0.5Ga0.5N(12 or 22 Å)/GaN(20 Å) bounded by Al0.5Ga0.5N (100 Å) barriers, were investigated by high resolution x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence measurements. We studied the carrier dynamics in asymmetric double quantum wells by analyzing the temperature-dependent and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra. Carrier tunneling between the coupled quantum wells affected the optical properties. In our analysis of the effect of the carrier tunneling in terms of free-carrier screening, the effect was much weaker for the sample with Tib=12 Å than for that with Tib=22 Å. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To understand the dietary contribution of phytoplankton on the growth of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus feeding on four algal preys; Micyocystis aerufinosa, two strains of Chlorella vulgaris and Stephanodsicus hantzschii, the growth rates, egg holdings and mortalities were measured. Two strains, M. aeruginosa and C. vulgaris induced a high growth of B. calyciflorus, while S. hantzachii and C. vulgaris UTEX26 induces a low growth. Rotifers strongly decreased the densities of C. vulgaris UTEX26 and S. hantzschii within 2-3 days, compared to those of M. aerufinosa and C. vulgaris in the same time period. Cyanobacterium M. aerufinosa induced the longest lasting egg holdings and the lowes mortarlity of B. calyciflorus within 7 days, while S. hantzschii produced the egg holdings for only a short period in the beginning of the culture with ahigh mortality. This study shows that a toxic cyanobacterium, M. aerufinosa, can beapplied as a fruitful diet for the development of zooplankton population, like rotifer., Article, 信州大学山地水環境教育研究センター研究報告 2: 11-15(2004)
