Evechinus chloroticus (commonly known as kina) is a sea urchin species endemic to New Zealand. Its roe is a culinary delicacy to the indigenous Māori and a globally exported food product. Echinochrome A (Ech A) is a bioactive compound isolated from the waste product of kina shells and spines; however, the molecular mechanisms of Ech A bioactivity are not well understood, partly due to Ech A never being studied using unbiased genome‐wide analysis. To explore the high‐value pharmaceutical potential of kina food waste, we obtained unbiased functional genomic and proteomic profiles of yeast cells treated with Echinochrome A. Abundance was measured for 4100 proteins every 30 min for four hours using fluorescent microscopy, resulting in the identification of 92 proteins with significant alterations in protein abundance caused by Ech A treatment that were over‐represented with specific changes in DNA replication, repair and RNA binding after 30 min, followed by specific changes in the metabolism of metal ions (specifically iron and copper) from 60–240 min. Further analysis indicated that Ech A chelated iron, and that iron supplementation negated the growth inhibition caused by Ech A. Via a growth‐based genome‐wide analysis of 4800 gene deletion strains, 20 gene deletion strains were sensitive to Ech A in an iron‐dependent manner. These genes were over‐represented in the cellular response to oxidative stress, suggesting that Ech A suppressed growth inhibition caused by oxidative stress. Unexpectedly, genes integral to cardiolipin and inositol phosphate biosynthesis were required for Ech A bioactivity. Overall, these results identify genes, proteins, and cellular processes mediating the bioactivity of Ech A. Moreover, we demonstrate unbiased genomic and proteomic methodology that will be useful for characterizing bioactive compounds in food and food waste. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the study of early silver owned by Monmouth County families, one piece stands out. It is a silver bowl with two handles and six panels that is monogrammed "VD / I M" for Jacob and Maritje Van Dorn and dated 1699. Of a form made in New York City between 1690 and 1720, a legend, first recorded in the early 20th century, accompanies the bowl. Descendants believed that it was a racing trophy awarded for winning a horse race held on King's Highway in Middletown Village. This article discusses the bowl, its form and function, descent in the Van Dorn and Conover families, early horse racing in America, an antiques dealer named Edna M. This article examines the development of a new role for Personified-Death that emerged in early Renaissance illustrations of the 'Triumph of Death' in Petrarch's Triumphi. Originally the figure of Death was the Reaper who gathered sinners for an apocalyptic harvest, but through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries Death took on a new role presiding over peaceful deathbeds and the passage to a justified heavenly reward. The new imagery emerged from a syncretic tradition, marrying secular and devotional poetry, theology, Latin literature and devotional texts such as the ars moriendi to produce a mortality that reassured viewers of their salvation. These different Deaths were available to different audiences and featured different participants: one contemporary, collective and frightening; the other, classical, individual and comforting. Death came for all, but not all deaths were the same. The article presents examples of reflective looking that were encouraged by theological teaching and poetic traditions, and assisted viewers in rich contemplative readings. This allowed for interpretations of the images that embraced a wide semantic field with connotations well beyond the literal iconographie representations. An important aspect of the shift in the role of death at this time is the development of beliefs about the beatific vision in the early Renaissance, images of Personified-Death ushering donor-figures into the presence of the Virgin Mary suggests that, at least in some circumstances, images of donors-saints-and-Virgin-Mary, may be interpreted not as pleas for mercy (as they are often understood) but instead as representations of the successful completion of the good Christian's journey accessing the beatific vision via this new Death-figure. Shortly after a lengthy article on the art partnership of Marshall S. Simpson (1900-1958) and Roslynn E. Middleman (1929-2003) appeared in the Summer 2022 issue of New Jersey Studies, one individual who owns three of their works contacted the author. Outlined below is the story of those paintings, which now brings to six the total number of original Simpson-Middleman abstract collaborations in their fully developed style that can be located today. By 1956, the Newark, New Jersey--based, art team of Marshall S. Simpson (1900--1958) and Roslynn E. Middleman (1929--2003) had produced a large and important series of abstract paintings that depicted various interpretations of space and the night sky. Eleven of these works were featured in employment advertisements placed over the next two years by the Boeing Airplane Company (now the Boeing Company) in Scientific American and elsewhere. Signed "Simpson-Middleman," the paintings combined science, mathematics, and art into a single medium. Only one of the original works used by Boeing can now be located. This article tells for the first time the story of the unusual Simpson-Middleman art collaboration and the Boeing ad campaign, then documents in an illustrated checklist their paintings with related captions used in each of the seventeen Scientific American advertisements that incorporated them. In every generation there are individuals who succeed in a wide variety of activities that are seemingly unrelated to each other. Today we might describe them as overachievers, or perhaps some sort of so-called Renaissance personality endowed with a Midas touch. Daniel Hendrickson, an eighteenth-century entrepreneur from Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, was just such a person. He engaged in farming, coastwise shipping, milling, distilling, and many other business endeavors. He also became an author in print, a musician, a deacon in the Reformed Dutch Church, and a very versatile artist in the limner tradition, which by definition means an early painter with little or no formal training. This narrative describes the lives and artistic careers of William Savery Bucklin (1851-1928) and George Parker Bartle (1853-1918), both of Phalanx, a hamlet in Colts Neck, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Three of the works illustrated come from the art collection of the Monmouth County Park System. They acquired them because the paintings depict woodland scenes on the opposite side of the Swimming River Reservoir from their Thompson Park campus, the back areas of which still retain this wooded character.
